i just had one of those realizations moments where a piece of a frustrating puzzle clicks in. and suddenly i think i understand! but the new understanding is kinda bugging me....
#i don't really wanna get into the discourse#but uh as a raised atheists the Christmas Is Christain TM posts have been bothering me for years#bc uuuuh no it isn't. i celebrate christmas just fine without mixing it with christianity#and yeah i've seen the whole cultural christian argument and yeah kinda makes sense (tho i think it misses the point)#but suddenly it just clicked#that people who don't want to do christmas or even accept that christmas can be non-christian because of the culturally christian thing#aren't probably actually having a problem with christianity the religion (tho they can have that too!)#what they're saying is probably that they just don't want to have anything to do with a holiday from my - generic - culture#so that's why it doesn't matter to them that it's non-christian#the problem isn't actually about christianity (the religion) it's about the general western culture where christmas is prevalent#and that's like more understandable and less factually wrong as far as i understand things#but also some of the stricter takes on christmas then become a bit... uncomfortable#i can see the historic and personal anecdotal causes; don't really blame#but still - shifted the way i look at it
