On GW2's narratives

I maintain that the reason GW2's stories always fall flat (though some more than others cough SotO cough) is that we have almost no villains.

What parts of the story do people remember most fondly? LW1, PoF, and LW4 almost universally. Y'know, the parts that came to life because of Scarlet Briar, Balthazar, and Palawa Joko. I´d also add the tearjerker at the end of EoD and saying goodbye to Aurene, but that's not relevant to the point I'm going to make.

Remember in like 8th grade English class, when your teacher talked about conflicts in storytelling? It was probably something like this.

GW2 has opted almost universally for the bottom-right quadrant : Person vs. Nature. There's nothing wrong with that type of conflict. The dragons are a force of nature more than independent living things, and the Kryptis and Titans are about the same after all was said and done with them.

But those kinds of stories are almost antithetical to the power fantasy that most MMORPGs, including GW2, rely on. The only time in the history of this game where anything felt actively hostile was in HoT's open world. So we're just left there reacting to a quasi-mindless threat with no motivations, goals, or real personality, who we know for sure we're going to defeat because it's a video game designed to be beaten with minimal effort. If we wanted to call the antagonistic forces a "natural disaster", they would be the equivalent of a pretty mild rainshower. Not exactly a compelling story.

Before I move into villains, I want to address why Society and Self would also make uninteresting conflicts in this case. In both cases, it requires ANET to define our character's personality, goals, and convictions more than they already have. This leaves players feeling disconnected from any sort of potential narrative roleplay. Additionally, in the former's case, it would require ANET to make a profound political message, which I don´t think they are capable of.

That leaves us with Person vs. Person. Here's where villains come in.

Villain-centric stories are almost a cheat code for MMORPGs. Look at Lilith from FFXI, Shiro Tagachi and Khilbron from GW1, the Lich King from WoW, Emet Selch (everyone's favourite sexy grampa) and Zenos from FFXIV.

They allow you to tell a full and complete character-driven story without writing our characters for us or having to write them as cartoons so that they stand out (literally every one of our main party members in GW2). You're forced to define your character in comparison or contrast to the villain's aims, means, and/or convictions.

We found out later that Scarlet Briar was an agent of Modremoth, but at the time, we thought she was some batshit genius! We saw and reacted to the shit she was doing through the lens of trying to understand her. It made the world feel big and fragile and mysterious.

We met Balthazar as he deceived us, and we had to reckon with a god's view of life vs. our own.

Palawa Joko, I mean, nuff said, he's the best character writing we've ever had in this game and he was taken out of GW1. And he was played half for laughs!

When we don´t have strong antagonist writing, we're left with just a beige sea of allies who have no real philosophical underpinnings. Of course they're against the threat, it's killing them, what else? I don´t even know any of the SotO characters names because I can´t care about them. They're faceless randoms who simply act as agents of Isgarren. Okay. Who cares?

I am 1000000% certain that the writing team at ANET follows my inane tumblr blog closely, so please, take my advice and give us a mirror.

finished tears of the kingdom so i'm thinking about it now

good game. i'd call it a 9/10 alone, 8/10 as a sequel

so I don't need to get into details about the plot opportunities Nintendo didn't capitalize on in the presumably 4-ish years of development or the lack of playable Zelda or any of that. It's all been addressed before I got here. We're going to take that all as given and move on.

That said, I do think there are some easy things, and some not-so-easy things they could and should have done with this.

Remember Zelda's diary in Breath of the Wild that you could locate in her bedroom? I think they should have done that here. I'm not sure where specifically they'd place it, but I think it'd be reasonable to tuck it away somewhere in the sky, either in one location from earlier on in her time in the past, or in scattered pieces and imply they're travel logs from gathering up the Sages. Point is, I wanted more of Zelda's feelings written out here. It's straightforward and right to the gut in getting the player to make Zelda feel more Real even as she's not there.

If not a diary, there should have been little notes from Zelda carved into stonework throughout Hyrule, of her trying to leave help behind for him. It would've been a fun detail that they could have spread at least to the four major regions as per Zelda's implied traveling in order to request the Sage's aid for Link in the future.

Put a little scar line around Link's bicep if you're going to give him his original arm back! You could even make it a little Zonai green-ish if you wanted!

On that note actually, instead of giving Link his arm back, keep it gone. It's wrecked. Give an opportunity to show how Sheikah technology has been progressing in the post-credits by giving him a Sheikah prosthetic that still has full articulation. I'd believe it.

Give Zelda a lil' scar on her forehead. (bonus points it's a target for link kisses)

Anything textual about the Sheikah tech from BotW that got overtaken by Ganon being dismantled in the aftermath would have done a lot to explain why none of it is present in TotK. Even if it's all text and none of those lines are voice-acted. This is kind of what I assumed happened but I really appreciate the game actually giving me the info (or telling me outright) where stuff like that is concerned. Player assumption should only go so far!

Why is controlling Mineru so awkward and slow. I don't know what necessarily should be done to improve this but PLEASE do SOMETHING. Give her a run button or something.

I think there should have been at least one walk and talk cutscene for Zelda in the past, just like we had the game open with Link walking and talking with Zelda through the forgotten foundation down toward where Ganondorf was imprisoned for ten thousand years. I know we see glimpses of Hyrule's past when we see Zelda's memories in the geoglyphs but. I want more please.

Realistic or not, a walk and talk cutscene to close the game after the credits would've been fun too, at least to get up to the scene with Mineru and the others. I dunno. I like gameplay actions coming full circle. (Like Link reaching out for Zelda with the same hand he lost at the beginning. Very good, devs. A+)

why are there dogs at all the stables but no cats. why are there absolutely no cats in this Hyrule. Are there no mice in Hyrule? No vermin? We know squirrels exist. where the fuck are the cats.

Take the Amiibo button and the Map button off the Zonai menu. Put the Amiibo button somewhere in your key items. Why did you put the Map button on there if just to fill in the 8th slot. This was extremely unnecessary.

Good game though. If you liked BotW you'll like this one, I think. If you didn't then sorry it's more of the same.

The vibe is fantastic, the gameplay is engrossing, the difficulty spikes in a way that's a little hard to figure out until you really embrace either keeping stat buffs on via food or keeping your armor upgraded but is otherwise pretty reasonable, and the shrine puzzles are a ton of fun, even the battle ones. The Sage dungeons are overall MUCH better than the Divine Beasts (Mineru's is hit or miss; the Thunderhead Isles are great imo and the Depths portion is fucking dogshit) to the point I actually... had fun? Doing them? Holy shit.

Also the voice acting is fine. It's fine! Patricia Summersett is Good as Zelda. I thought this in BotW and I think this now. Don't bother to fight me because I don't care to engage.

I truly hope the dev team goes back to more structured storytelling after this because there's a LOT of opportunity narrative-wise to capitalize on in this game that they didn't follow up on, but just enough really nice details that makes me want more meat in the story even if the gameplay side suffers a bit.

But then, I like visual novels, so that says a lot about my priorities.

I'm glad you liked it love! Those were all the things I did which is why I was eager to make sure people who are manifesting an sp don't do what I used to do. It's so much easier now honestly because I don't obsess over them anymore and they're not on the pedestal. This might be a bit of a rant 🙃

Aries venus(m/f)1st house: they tend to be a mixture of straightforward-cat and mouse. Being the last fire sign they honestly are the most mature when it comes to expressing desire for someone and may be a bit more on the aloof side in the beginning! Similar to venus I’m aqua it’ll seem like you’re not even there but that’s apart of the dance you see! Since Aquarius is ruled by Saturn and Uranus this can cause them to be erratic and serious when romantic feelings come in to play-so this can lead to paradoxical behavior on their part! Pisces venus(m/f)12th house:tends to be very vibrational! You’ll feel it similarly to Scorpio but it’ll feel much more atmospheric if anything. They pull a lot of disappearing acts normally and without warning but this is because they get overwhelmed by their feelings and need to gather themselves. Agreement With Myself

2017 gave me a rollercoaster ride. I learned different things. I learned not to trust easily. I learned and realized that my parents are always there for me, they're my treasure. I fell in love with a 6'3 basketball player but he ended up leaving me because he wants a girl who can "satisfy" his "needs". That broke my heart but my life won't stop just because of him.

Now that a new chapter has come, I made a promise to myself that I won't let an old flame burn me twice.

One of my goals is to grow and progress as a person. I will list down the things that will help me fullfill my goals this 2018.

1. Always put God first. I believe that in everything that we do, we should always ask God for guidance. I have already experienced that whenever I put God first in my life, I always get the victory. (Not the victory that an ordinary person sees.) An example of this is when I competed in a speech contest when I was on my 8th grade. Throughout the training process until the contest, I prayed to God for victory. Before entering the contest room, I saw a bible verse painted in the wall of that room that says, "All things work together for good to those who love God and called according to His purpose." When I read that, I smiled and entered the contest room. Well, the contest didn't end up well, I forgot some of the words but you know what? Thanks be to God for reminding me that He's in control. I may not be the winner for other people's eyes but I still feel victorious because I know that all things work together for the good.

2. Explore more. Last 2017, I found my home; the place where I enjoy the most. I am now a member of the official theater guild of Wesleyan University- Philippines, Teatrong Laan Para sa Obra Ngayon (TELON). As I look back to the day we auditioned to that group, I was so nervous, I even thought of backing out. I was so worried, many questions entered my head, "what if I can't meet their expectations?", "I don't have any experience in acting and theater so why am I here?" But I am thankful that I didn't let the fear to overcome me. Being in that group feels almost like I'm in a diffrent dimension. I got to explore things and I am now able to do the things I can't do before. I wanted to explore more this year and I will never ever let fear be a hindrance to fulfill my dreams.

3. Save money. Last semester, I saved up almost 6,000 pesos from my allowance. And I want to continue it. It feels so good to have savings because it enables me to buy the things that I really need. By saving up money, my parents can see that I give value to the allowance that they are working hard for me.

4. Don't let emotions overcome you. I am a cry baby, I admit it. When I'm angry, I cry. When I'm happy, I cry. When I'm sad, of course, I cry. My "singkit" eyes will be more "singkit" whenever I cry too much. I'm a very emotional person. It's very hard for me to control my tears. That's why this 2018, I don't want to be that cry baby anymore. I will try to be stronger than before.

5. Don't settle for less. I made a thread on twitter, let me share this to you guys.

6. Put your heart into its proper place. Ask yourself, how can they break your heart if you didn't gave it to them? 'Wag ibigay ang puso sa kung sino-sino. Nasa atin ang pagdedesisyon kung kanino tayo magtitiwala, kaya we should choose wisely. Don't trust easily. Use your brain. Because if we don't think wisely, it can cause us long lasting sorrow.

7. Rely only to God. To end this agreement with myself, I have to remind myself that I cannot do all this things if I only rely to my own strength and knowledge. I will continue to be dependent on God and ask him for guidance and wisdom. I can only have victory through Him.

With God, nothing is impossible.
