I'd take it even a step further and look at how ed imagined himself as the kraken, this violent water monster that randomly showed up to kill his father so even when they're both translated into this underwater-mystical-creature-world, how ed sees the world, their difference in his head becomes even more prominent because he views himself as a monster so basically the bad kind of mystical sea creature. Like- seeing them on opposite sides of good and bad....

Thinking about how both Stede and Ed put eachother on a pedestal in their mind but in Stedes dream, Ed is himself and Stede's just stronger and more masculine. Then in Eds dream, Stede is a mythical magical ethereal creature and Ed is a helpless drowning man

Like, Stede views Ed as so much greater than him and wants to be his equal, and Ed views Stede as greater than him, in a way that is completely unattainable to Ed. Something he could only dream of being worthy of.
