i'm not the monster here, i'm simply a mother. / @veiledoath
he's frustrated with himself, mostly, for not seeing it coming. gotham rogues don't play fair, and a dick grayson who has spent the majority of his life reading between the lines of crime should have known that damian would be too late. dick was busy with the bomb, and damian with the victim but by the time he realized it was odd how the wrong wires intersected, the victim was dead. and above all else, above damage control, finding the assailant, above calling in for back-up, in that split second, dick should've known that damian, who never accepted failure, would not accept his comforts. so he's already annoyed, first with himself, second, with the situation and taking advantage of a young child's guilt complex, and now, third, by the delay in his manhunt. he hadn't meant his 'i don't know' to talia's initial ask to sound as thoughtless as it did, and knowing she likely wouldn't believe him anyway didn't harbor any love lost. and while her words don't stop his anger, it deflates it greatly. his mother. they may not see eye to eye on everything -- on much, even, but they had two, very VERY important people in common. the well-being of which surpassed any other instincts. nightwing sighs. one hand on his hip and the other dragging over his domino and up into his hair. he's frustrated at the situation, not at her, and he needs to remember that. " i wasn't lying. i don't know where he is. he disabled his comms and tracking. " and he wasn't in any of the spots he usually ran to when he was upset but ultimately wanted to be found. that alone settled in his stomach like a stone. the idea that it was dick, specifically, he might be running from. and from that, dick knows what he has to do. as his self-sufficient father's son, he has a hard time forming the words but as a desperate man, he swallows his pride. " i need your help. " and because he knows what he's asking, and who he's asking it from, he adds: " please. "
