ej's adventures in romance: the good, the bad, the ugly

i've had kindle unlimited for the few months, and have been on a deep deep dive into all the recs from the romance genre that i can get my grubby little paws on. I've read.... many, many books. so many.

I've made a rec list of my new fave authors in the genre before, and this is not that. I'm just gonna list what I've read, by tropes, with ratings, and you can read my full reviews on goodreads. I've gone there. there are quite a few of the booktok hits here, because they came up on rec lists, and I'm gonna give my honest opinions on them okay. my goodreads!

Before we get down and dirty, have my actual recs from the last month: Heather Guerre remains a diamond in the rough, although she can now be joined by a further two authors: Kathyrn Moon (smutty RH queen) and Zoey Draven, a surprise last minute entry that doesn't shy away from darker themes, but handles them maturely.

other recs are the obvious: Talia Hibbert, Katee Roberts, and our very own @dominimoonbeam (whose book Doors I've been reccing a LOT lately, as I love it so much, and the sequel will be out soon >:3)

the "grovel" trope

books where the MMC fucks up and tries to make up for their mistakes. a good read where you get a healthy dose of angst and then a lot of making up for it. can be a great cathartic read.

Cate C. Wells has a whole series dedicated to this, "the five packs", one of which I already recommended as a guilty pleasure: the lone wolf's rejected mate". Now look, these books are ridiculous, the worldstate is terrible, each pack is a dude fest that reeks of misogyny, but they're pretty fun. I've read book 1 and book 3. I want to stab the MMC of book 1 with a rusty spork. you can skip it.

the lone wolf's rejected mate however is a ride, with a broken MMC who rejects his soulmate because he thinks he's too broken (literally, his wolf tries to kill her), and then they get captured, save each other, and he builds her a treehouse, yada yada. mind the content warnings, but if you want to read something OTT that basically epitomises the craziness that is the PNR and "grovel" romance genre, read this, and hold onto your butts.

the paranormal romance genre: shifters, vampires and more

Heather Guerre's books. okay, so actual recs. She focuses on characters from working class backgrounds with a sprinkle of the paranormal thrown in, everyone is over the age of 25 (thank god, most are in their 30s), and she can really write. I won't tag Eeshley again, but the "Tooth and Claw" series was their rec and *chefs kiss*. this is still the self-published romance genre, so these books could use an editor/polish, but honestly, I'm a big fan of her writing, and have picked up all her books. (her contemporary romance is also excellent.)

post-apocalyptic trope

Claire Kent's books. Imagine Joel from the last of us as a book series. I've only read Last Light so far, which is the prequel to a longer series that explores life in america 5+ years after an asteroid collides with western europe, causing global environmental catastrophes. I'm not 100% sold on her world building, but this is a romance novel, and the way she writes the characters and their relationships are human and organic, and the most realistic I've come across so far. the world state is the walking dead, with evil biker gangs that rape and pillage. i'm assuming this is an american thing, but can't comment on what it'd be like in the UK considering we no longer exist, due to aforementioned asteroid collision. probably for the best.

omegaverse and reverse harem tropes

yeah, I thought omegaverse was just a fanfic thing too. it's not, and it is super prevalent in het romance. it was never really my thing in fanfic, and the fact it is not a shifter thing was very surprising to me, as knots/packs/heat/rut still exist, but it's just humans with animalistic traits. I kept on waiting for the motorcycle gang in 'baby and the late night howlers' to turn into wolves, and they never did.

So Kathryn Moon writes some delicious reverse harem books. I read the first of monsterfucker series 'a lady of rooksgrave manor' years ago, and liked it, although there wasn't enough plot for me to continue. she writes excellent smut. Seriously, just really, really good smut. BIG FAN. I've been making my way through her 'Sweetverse' series, which has more connections and actual relationships between the characters, and polymances, and I recommend starting with Lola + the millionaires, if you can handle a little omegaverse. mind the content warnings, this is a book about recovering from trauma, which happened in the first book (baby's book, although offscreen. Lola has a lot of flashbacks in italics.)

Otherwise, you can stick with the monsterfucker books! I bought her latest monster series off of regular kindle, instead of KU, and I'm really excited to read it hehehe

"mars need more women" and "fated mate" tropes

hehehe okay HERE WE GO. these books are all about women ending up on planets where due to some sort of cataclysmic event - disease, mostly - 80% of the female population of the planet has died. now as we're not here for angst, the arrival of these women are usually due to some other species abducting them, and they are then "rescued" or recovered after a crash on metaphorical mars, which needs a better sex ratio to ensure the survival of the species.

this trope is coupled with "fated mate" tropes, where basically the rescued/recovered women end up with a devoted alien husband, who yearns until he can win her over (we're all about consent here folks)

the ice planet barbarians series by ruby dixon. this is basically na'vi aliens that crashlanded on an ice planet 250 odd years ago, and have made it their home, living in tribal colonies. to survive in this planet's toxic atmosphere, they've taken in a native parasite called a 'khui' which helps their bodies adapt to the climate and atmosphere. the women in the books also receive the same parasite to survive (they're given the choice), and this is the basis of the "mate bonds" formed throughout the series.

now book 1 is a rocky start, and the weakest of the series. I nearly put it down because of the first 20 pages. you can skip the first 20 pages. it basically recounts the abduction of the women from their home planet, and mistreatment by their captors (tw for sexual assault of a side character, not explicit). the ship malfunctions, and the women "cargo" are dropped onto the ice planet, where they are found by the not-na'vi, who are called sa-khui, because of the parasite.

now the rest of the series is about adapting to life on an alien planet, understanding the culture of the sa-khui, and gaining a devoted alien hubby. look, I read four books in a week. they're fun, they're exciting, the smut is good, and it's an easy read. it's also written by an experienced and practiced author, as the topics are handled maturely, it doesn't take itself too seriously, and it has great representation.

(one of my favourite books in the series, book 7, is centred around Lilah, who was born deaf and had a cochlear implant that was surgically removed during the abduction. the book focuses on her struggling to adapt to life on the planet, aided by a sa-khui that rescues her and learns ASL to communicate, and it's an excellent read okay)

I'd say read book 1 (maybe skipping first 20 pages, or even to part 2) for context, read book 2 (my favourite of the series omg), and then pick and choose from there!! I've read 1,2,4,7, and I'm gonna end up coming back for more hehehe.

"choosing theo" is another in this genre, but it didn't quite vibe with me. it leans into the 'rescued human ends up on a planet that needs women for propagation', with a matriarchal society where the men go to husbandry school to learn how to please women, and all residents of the planet are required to participate in three month long marriages to try to find potential mates to propagate the species. the premise is a fun one, but the first book is not the strongest, and I didn't continue from there. (another rusty spork for the MMC...)

dothraki in space trope

we're at the end of my trope list! I liked the ice planet barbarian series a lot, and I'd kept on seeing the Horde Kings of Dakkar by Zoey Draven recommended, and they are good. (thank you woofs >:3) think dothraki from GoT in space; humans live in small, poorly maintained colonies on the Dakkar planet, where they aren't allowed to hunt or damage the earth. offenses are punishable by death. these books lean into the captive trope, and handle the issues of the worldstate and navigating cultural differences super well, with a heavy dose of consent and BAMF heroines that rise up to their situation and make a place for themselves in their new (objectively better) lives.

i'm on book two now, and I love the maturity in the characters and the writing (which I did not find in 'choosing theo'), and they're an excellent romp. fantastic rec, really glad I picked this up >:3

am I finally going to take a break from my reading binge now? I keep on saying I will, and then not doing that ahahahaha. my kindle library is still stuffed full, mainly with other books from my fave authors above, but also some nice space horror to round it off.

next on my list is gonna be either 'Haunt, Heart, Havoc', a horror romance that I've been meaning to read forever, or 'Dead silence', which is aliens meets titanic in space. >:3 if you read all of this, KUDOS TO YOU, have a lovely sunday ahahaha!

EEAAO Connections

More meta! We're going on another long feel trip! Having watched AW2 videos, playthroughs, read multiple wiki pages & having watched Everything Everywhere All At Once (+ insightful meta posts and video essays) I see some overlapping themes and messages 👀 General/vague spoilers for the movie & spoilers for AW2 below

I'm going off the concept that there are countless possible loops/alternate timelines/multiple universes in AW2. EEAAO obviously deals with the latter: multiple universes where every choice you make branches off into another reality/universe.

Nihilism, breaking the cycle/spiral

One of the main messages the movie conveys is that yes, the universe may not care about us, our actions may and can be insignificant in the big scheme of things. But that doesn't mean we cannot choose love, for ourselves and others. As this post brilliantly pointed out: in the universes where the characters choose nihilism through negative actions and not care about others, they sorta ruin/worsen their own lives. But once the characters choose love and empathy for themselves and others, their lives improve for the better.

You can see similar thoughts reflected in AW2. If we go with the idea that the Shadows in the Dark Place (DP) are past Alan (they even are his 3d model) and perhaps even versions where he kills himself, haven't led Alan out of the DP or the Darkness at all. They're literally dead ends. But only once he begins accepting external help (Saga, Rose and of course Alice) is he able to advance out of the spiral. It's also his love for Alice that keeps him going after all those years.

(Which is a similar point made in this post where the post argues that it's not destruction (parallel/similar to pessimistic nihilism) that can help you break free from the spiral but ascension (//love, support from others))

Choices & love

Now, venturing more into Koskela territory (this is a Koskela love blog after all)

What I loved in the EEAAO is that some characters are aware of these multiple universes and even if not, they long for a universe that exists somewhere else. In this post it's outlined that Waymond, who's a rich successful businessman in one universe, still longs for a domestic "poorer" life with Evelyn, doing simple taxes and having a laundromat business. That's the life the main story's universe takes place in, basically. Just ughh, the idea that gets me that people will choose to be together in every possible universe, or that they'd choose one humble universe over any other version where they might be more "successful" but separate from one another.

And I feel this would apply to the Koskelas too. Those brothers are soulmates. @zephyrone01 said that if Saga could still profile Jaakko after his death, Jaakko would've probably said that he loved Ilmo and didn't regret any of it and <33

The Koskelas would love each other and die for each other but also desperately try to save each other in every loop, every iteration and alternate reality/universe. I've been thinking about what-ifs: what if one of them is aware of the loops, what if they're both aware or subconsciously know what will happen/can happen. They would try to prevent each other from dying. They would and they keep on fighting for each other but also for their town and the people that they clearly love. Ilmo and Jaakko wouldn't put all that money and energy into their various businesses if they didn't believe Watery and its people still have a chance.

@zephyrone01 and I've been discussing many such what-if scenarios. Maybe it would've been easier for them if they just packed their business, aware of how dangerous BF & Watery are, but that's not their way. Even if they know the dangers and the tragic future ahead, they are willing to fight for who they love, what they love and they'll desperately clutch onto the hope that maybe, just maybe the next loop will be different and more positive.

And maybe there's a reality where they left or gave up but other versions of them would be (subconsciously) reminded of these darker futures and realize that staying and fighting has a much better outcome, even if the stakes remain high and one or both might still die as a result. But they would still choose any of those universes where they stay and fight because they have each other and it would've been worth it anyway. Even if the pain of losing the other will be painful and unbearable, it means they loved deeply and cared dearly.

I have so many feelings about the Koskelas man 😭😭😭 I hope this post was somewhat comprehensible and cohesive.

So yeah, TLDR: it's corny but love, empathy and compassion are the answer in every universe. Love for yourself and the people around you. It can help you get into the light. Maybe choosing this life is enough even if you don't leave the biggest impact because there are people you care about and who care about you too. And that's all that matters, really.

Woke up with a clear nose but I'm pretty sure that's because of the 120 oz of water I drink so soon as I went to the bathroom and snamed I immediately got clogged again. Still wheezing, not coughing as much. Trying to force myself to drink 33 Oz of water I'm just too lazy to walk downstairs, I'm sure I will go soon, that could be what's stopping me from having an unclogged nose. Don't have any real plans for breakfast, never do, still feel bloated from chicken Fila two days ago and the Ramen I packed on afterwards.

Relationship has been one big joke from 1 extreme end to the other complete extreme I could be happy in love with my soulmate and literally the next 2nd I'm confused and packing my s*** about to move out and be f****** homeless because of the dumb a** fights we're having. I wanna say they're my fault but they're not they've only recently been meeting more serious about my happiness and that could lead into me actually sticking up for myself which is going to cause a bit more friction. I am so glad someone is bringing this because it just so happens to be part of my extensive Twilight literary universe that mainly exists to spite Stephenie Meyer.

So basically, I love the soulmate trope which is why imprinting is still part of this version I've made up.

Also, I am basically convinced that the only reason Stephenie Meyer put imprinting in, was to make things over all more spicy and dramatic (and also steal away even more autonomy from the pack) so my version of things isn't that well calculated either.

But basically the idea is: platonic imprinting is totally a thing. That could happen for multiple reasons, either because they aren't inherently attracted to one another, not interested in a relationship, already in a relationship with other people etc. etc.

A reason could also be to form alliances (I have a Vampire paired with one of the wolves, for example) or to ensure safety for one or both parties in other ways.

Reproduction could of course be a reason but personally I am a big defender of co parenting with multiple adults in parent roles and in my opinion that is kind of in tune with the overall pack mentality.

I do think that the pack from the books is the first that would expierence this kind of imprinting and turn out of relationship simply because from what we learn, imprinting is supposed to be super rare which isn't the case for the back from the twilight books.

This new peak in imprintings obviously has its reasons and I would think that the way imprintings are handled heavily adapts to be less linear.

I think they're interpreted as a natural way to balance a person out.

So Sam is really stressed and overwhelmed with his new role as leader which is why he imprints on a calm and nurturing person.

Jared is just really horny so he is paired up with someone who loves sex. (Am I mixing Jared up right now? I'm not, am I?)

That's how I'd explain why Sam still broke up with Leah, he just wasn't what he needed anymore and once she turned he had built a loving relationship with Emily which was unfortunate but kinda the way things worked out.

Also, werewolf and imprintee have to be a similar (physical) age

Is there a way to make the imprinting not so bad? I can see how a species might have it as a way to pass on superior genes and all,but maybe just not have the whole. revolve around their imprint... and not when theyre a baby or kid... like it would make sense if they were at least sexually um i forgot what its called. like. mature yes. although i guess humans are technically sexually mature quite young alr :/ damn it!!

Well, the concept of imprinting is that bad. That person becomes your one and all, the one you have to be with. It's the soulmate trope, only where Ao3 authors make their OTP find writing on their forearms, Meyer had teenagers look lovingly at toddlers, "She's the one."

As it is, we already have canon insisting it's not bad at all, nothing inherently sexual about Jacob and Quill's imprints on Renesmee and Jacob, it's just that Jacob gave Renesmee a promise ring when she was three months old and he will always, for the rest of his life, depend on seeing her as much as possible in order to function.

Plenty of people make excuses for imprinting already, so if you take their arguments at face value then sure, imprinting's not bad at all.

As it is, making imprinting less bad would mean one of two things: one, we make it more palatable while failing to fix the problem:

Jacob imprints on Renesmee: she's not sexually mature, so he's not going to feel anything but fond big brother feelings until she gets there. This is already canon, but with extra steps.

Jacob looks at Renesmee, doesn't imprint, seven years later she's sexually mature and he does imprint: now Renesmee's experiencing the same as every other adolescent girl experiences when her parents' male friend who's watched her grow up suddenly discovers she's a woman.

Jacob and Renesmee start dating of their own accord, they fall in love, and Jacob imprints: now we're where we are with Sam and Emily, Jared and Kim, and Paul and Rachel, which is that Jacob is completely dependent on her and she can never break up because it would kill him.

So, no good.

The other option is that there's no mystical bond tying them together, they both have the choice to step away from the relationship. Imprinting just means you're really, stupidly attracted to someone, 10/10 would go for it, but you can choose not to.

But now we're looking at a very different beast from imprinting, one where commitment won't be a thing at all because if imprinting worked like this I imagine the individual shifter would be able to imprint several times. There's no concept of imprinting for that matter, just Jared not being able to keep in his pants and holy god does he have a lot of kids running around.

RE: Supernatural Hawkins au - I feel like some angst can be introduced in a way of Eddie not trusting Steve after he tells the party about the grimoire etc (and rightfully so bc he doesn’t know Steve like the rest of them do) and corners him after the meeting to say that he’s keeping his eye on him and that this better not be a fucked up way of getting to all of them -

And Steve - being like okay. I get it. Keep me accountable, keep a close eye on me. and Eddie’s like. Fuck. Wait why do I feel-

Now, I imagine that were this to happen it would be before vecna et al but after Steve becomes the Pied Piper of supernatural Hawkins. So maybe his parents come home over the winter holidays and give him the lowdown on the Family Business, and Steve freaks out a bit and sits on it for a day or two before calling his not quite code red.

And Dustin brings Eddie along because, Steve, he's basically Pack now too, and Eddie is like wait what the fuck those rumours about Steve being the almost-humans of Hawkins go-to babysitter are true??

And Dustin gives him a Look, like yes, obviously, Dustin has been talking Steve up for months did Eddie not believe him? Rude.

Robin interrupts with "can we PLEASE get this show on the road? Steve looks like he's about to keel over from stress."

"wait right here" Steve says as he bolts out of his living room and reenters lugging a book that's huge. Just. Completely impractical in size. I'm talking 75 x 75 cm and 20 cm high type deal. Stupid big. Occult big. Ritual big. It sets Eddie's teeth on edge.

Steve heaves it onto the coffee table, and says "we have a big problem"

Nancy Wheeler leans over to inspect the tome, the goddamn Grimoire, and Steve smacks her hand away from opening it.

He stands, hands on his hips, and takes a deep breath.

"over winter break, my parents came home. And they told me about the...the Family Business, as they called it." He glares at the book, his nose scrunching with the scowl and Eddie might call it cute but that's for him to know and now else to find out. "They're Monster Hunters."

There is a silence that stretches and stretches and Eddie thinks he might vomit from the turbulent emotions filling the room, none of which, however, are the betrayal he expects.

"Steve..." Robin starts, trails off.

"they don't know anything, apparently, despite this shit being in the family for generations." Steve begins pacing. "They have no idea about any of you, or that Hawkins is apparently the unofficial supernatural capital of Indiana. Everyone is safe, but I--"his voice cracks, and Eddie would maybe feel sorry if this wasn't King Steve telling him this, wasn't a goddamn hereditary Monster Hunter standing in front of him. He just feels fucking pissed.

"I'm worried that they're gonna start hanging around more, and that they're going to realize that--" Steve's hands are running through his hair, nervous. "I don't know, I smell like a pack of werewolves or my best friend is my Selkie magic assigned soulmate" and Eddie wasn't sure he believed that rumour even when Dustin confirmed it, that it didn't seem possible for someone like Harrington to be bound by such pure magic to Robin Buckley. "- or that whenever I go out a gaggle of kids that aren't quite human seem to follow me."

Robin stands, opening her arms for him to fold into, puzzle pieces locking together.

"I just don't want anyone to get hurt because of me." He says, muffled, into Robin's shoulder. If Eddie didn't know better, he'd say he was crying.

Dustin quickly joins the hug, and the rest of the gaggle of teens, including Erica Sinclair, follow suit. Nancy stays back with Eddie, arms crossed and brows furrowed.

Eddie can taste the worry in the room, a sour bitterness on his tongue, all directed towards Steve. He doesn't get it. The guy just admitted to being part of a dynasty of people who kill the kind of people in this room, and no one is worried he's going to hurt them, just that he might be hurt.

Eddie lets the others do the planning, which is generally accepting that they need to let Claudia Henderson and the Sinclair parents know, not tell the Wheelers, and keep Steve's parents far away from Hawkins. Easy. Sure.

He hangs back as Nancy herds the kids into her station wagon, waving as she leaves. Robin putters in the kitchen, so Eddie takes the opportunity to step into Steve's space.

"I don't know if this is some fucked up long con, Harrington, to get all the inside information on the supernatural beings of Hawkins, but I'm watching you." He jabs a finger into Steve's chest, snarling. "Somehow you got those pups to trust you, worry about you, but I don't. If you even seem a threat to those kids, or you step outta line, I'll -" then it hits him, the wave of sadness and grief and--and relief. Eddie has never been good at individual emotions, finds them confusing and too specific and make his teeth hurt, and he feeds better from groups anyways, but. Steve is all but screaming how he feels into Eddie's ear.

"good." Steve says. Nods. "You'll look out for them." As though that's a normal thing to say when a vampire has expressly threatened you. "If something happens, if my parents get to close or shit hits the fan, I need you to do what you need to do so they're safe. So this godforsaken town is safe."

Eddie blinks, stepping back "wait. You want me to-"

Steve nods again. "If push comes to shove I need you to burn any trace we were ever here and make sure all the little fae kids are safe." He takes a breath. The hard zest of determination overpowers anything else Eddie might otherwise have sensed. "You have to kill me and my parents, and make sure no one ever knows."

FIRST UP This one hasn't actually been touched yet! by me at least aside from a doodle and adding my own two cents to it cause I keep forgetting to ask @pillowspace if they're planning anything more with it since the flailfest I unleashed over it XD And idk if tumblr search is being a butt but the only post/thread/thing I can find for it rn is this pic I did? no idea where the reblog chains went?? THOUGH in the last... 2 hours I think? I'd end up combining my thoughts on it with the red string soulmate AU cause who doesn't like to throw in the tension of 'how am I linked to a robot' as a soulmate??? THE MAIN GIST of it though was that YN has pretty bad vision. Enough to occasionally use a cane but not so much they can't get around on their own as long as they know where they're going. They have SOME vision but it's pretty blurry so their job options are also pretty limited (they insist on working to take care of their kid sibling, who's kind of a lovable brat). Sun/Moon have escaped from The Faz, and are currently in 'hiding' as a drifter/hobo sort. They've got a big hoodie and sun hides his rays during the day, but pretty soon after escaping they run into a street kid. Absolutely not standing for this, they end up doing what they can to help provide food/shelter for the kid, and eventually sort of gain their own little pack of them(and their families) and put their skills to use to build nice ish but still crappy shelters and work around here and there to bring back food. At some point they cross paths with YN and help them out with some heavy lifting, but YN doesn't pick up the fact they're an animatronic. They part ways, but run into each other again (pluck the red string a bit here for the pull of fate slamming them together again). Stuff happens, there's an incident with a third party, and Sun offers to walk YN home for safety. They talk as they go and things go well. They part. This goes on for a while and eventually Sun meets the sibling. Sibling is IN THE KNOW right away. BIG SQUINT. They get blackmailed by the child. Meanwhile YN is unaware and starts doing little things like making food for them as a thankyou. Food they cant eat, but the people they're helping can. THIS keeps going, more cute interactions, then one day there's a bigass storm and YN insists Sun stay over cause it's dangerous. He can't justify going out enough so he begrudgingly stays. The lights go out. NOW, MOON is not ok with this. Sort of. He doesn't trust YN at all at first and is only slightly ok when they start giving them food they can bring and also helping them out with more cash than they were making otherwise to get things their folks need. When he shows up though, he does his best(bad job) to try and pass for sun until the storm passes, but it's uh... A Struggle. YN isn't sure what's up but they shrug it off. Later after more basics, the news picks up The Faz is looking for the runaway animatronic. Sun/Moon panic. They're not in the most hidden area, but now there's a problem. MOON is not on board with maybe asking YN for help. They're definitely getting closer, but they're also positive that YN would rat them out. Not justified, but still. He's wary. SO time to test YN. He'll prove to Sun You can't be trusted, and one day after walking them home a little later at night, flips the switch and bam. Moon Time. Classic Moon Time. Well, Almost. Something of a chaotic reveal, YN is scared, but mostly taken aback they never put two and two together. BUT there's that pull. That little red string pulled tight in their soul. Moon won't hurt them. And they couldn't bear ratting them out. There's some back and forth along the way of the boys being in denial about actually having some kind of string of fate, and once the bot reveal happens, YN is like Oh god. Oh god I was falling for them. They aren't even Human. Im an IDIOT. But they also couldn't bear to throw them under the bus and let something bad happen. So as the Faz follows the rumors of the boys helping out this little pocket community, and they need somewhere to actually hide, the offer is made. Things are tense with Moon out and about freely now, now that Sun knows he won't be a problem, but Moon is still waiting for things to go south. The next while is pretty domestic, mostly them hiding out and getting anxious they can't help their kids. YN realizing how stupid they've been about SO MUCH. But also having Sun and Moon around the house as another pair of hands is... very helpful. Extremely so. And even though Moon is standoffish, both do go out of their way to make some things easier. YN can breathe for the first time in a while. they aren't doing things all on their own anymore, as much as they could, it's nice to be able to have someone loosen the line. They fuss over some things, the 'i can do it' vibe running strong, but Sun and Moon try not to step on their toes. Aaaand I tHINK that's about as far as stuff got in the rambling? (But Pillow, idk if you did wanna do stuff with this, but if not I am all kinds of on board to futz with it XD')

This was probably one of the first AUs I ever read and every reread has been a delight. Written by one of my favorite fic authors ever, it’s a fun high seas fantasy fic where Hermann is a boat navigator and Newt is the sexy mysterious man that they find lost at sea. If you’re currently drowning in Our Flag Means Death nonsense right now, this is definitely a fun fic to check out.

God I am just as obsessed with this fic as I was reading this 4 years ago. It’s weird and eerie and honestly just reads like a particularly strange sci-fi short story. Basic plot is that a hole is found in the desert and it’s weird and Hermann and Newt are two scientists brought out to figure out what the hell it is. I’ve done fanart for this in the past and I should do it again quite honestly, lol.

An Enthralling Holiday Abroad by Jay Auris (nighthawkms) (35,438 words, 13/13 chapters, rated E)

What’s funny is that this will definitely not be the only vampire fic I suggest for readers but it will definitely be the sexiest, dear god. Like, it's sexy for sure but the overall plot and story is super mysterious and cool and it's just a fun read!

Meet Me Across the Water, And We'll Start an Endless Storm by skepticamoeba (35,515 words, 15/15 chapters, rated T)

Oh man, I haven't read this one in awhile but if you want a wholesome lighthouse keeper au, please check this one out! I remember it being very atmospheric and wistful for the most part.

Vow of Silence by blairrabbit (35,686 words, 1 chapter, rated G)

This is less of a total AU as it's still dealing with the main plot of kaiju coming to earth but it's got enough AU elements that I'll include it anyway. GOD I love this fic tho, one of the only soulmate au's I fully jive with and it packs such a punch. Basically, it's a love language soulmate situation, you'll find your soulmate when you both speak and understand your special love language to each other. I like how the fic fleshes out other languages and it's just a really strong look at both their characterizations.

It Was Love at Second Sight by rednights (35,046 words, 3/3 chapters, rated T)

AU where they're just academic colleagues who have the worst first meeting of all time. Ugh, this is a another fic I'll revisit all the time because it's just that damn good. Lots of good pining and good Hermann characterization, probably my favorite depiction of his relationship with his sister.

Ghost: A Romance in Six Seasons by Skull_Bearer (15,255 words, 2/2 chapters, rated M)

OKAY BIG WARNING FOR MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH. As you can see from the tags, Hermann has MS and he meets Newt who's a ghost and just to warn ya, Newt is NOT the major character death in the story. It's cute, it's incredibly melancholic because you see where the story is going but it's still very romantic and again, if you're uncomfortable with major character deaths, I'd probably avoid this. Otherwise, it's cute read if you're in the mood for something sad but hopeful!

The Prince and The Frog by curiumKingyo (5,758 words, 3/3 chapters, rated E)

Man, just a fun, straight-up fairytale au where Hermann's literally a frog who's found by Prince Newton. Also, there's sex once he's, you know, NOT a frog, lmao.

I know next to nothing about Final Fantasy but still thoroughly enjoyed this fic where Newt and Hermann meet over FFXIV and the rest of the PPDC make appearances. It's not rated but I believe Teen would be fine!

My favorite dragon kingdom/arranged marriage fic! Super fun, super hot. By the same author as the sailing fic mentioned at the top!

WOO BOY, so this fic knocked me out. If you happen to have watched The Strain, you'll probably like this very gritty vampire hunting fic. I will strongly suggest those who do not like gore or depictions of characters transforming into something inhuman to avoid this one.

Newton Geiszler: Doctor of the Great Unknown by buckgaybarnes (2,698 words, 1/1 chapter, rated M)

I'm going to restrain myself to just one of Maria's au fics and pick the only one I read aloud to a friend during a car trip. Fun and great for those who are into Victorian spiritualism! She has a bunch of other great au's but this has a very fun setting!

There's an idea where Tony is... alive-ish? And stuck in Peter's head, watching everything go down, helpless to do much about it, and while he can talk to Peter, Peter just thinks he's gone a little crazy but doesn't care. It'd be Tony POV and I just... don't have enough pieces.

(The other big one I'll put behind a cut because it's long and basically the entire plot.)

There's another that I'd love to write, but it'll be long and angsty and hurt and I don't know if I can bring myself to.

Several years after the blip, Peter's walking down the street and finds Tony, homeless, with absolutely no memory of who he was or what his name is or anything. Peter takes him home, panicking. After a little while once he's managed to convince himself this IS Tony, he contacts Pepper/Happy/Rhodey etc, who are all thrilled and come to take Tony away.

Only Tony doesn't know them, doesn't feel comfortable around them, doesn't want to be there. He wants to stay with Peter. And reluctantly, he's allowed to.

It starts platonic, but eventually they end up together without telling anyone, Peter feeling pretty guilty about it all. Two years or more pass, and then one morning, Tony remembers everything.

Everything, that is, except the last few years he spent with Peter.

So he rushes out all omg Morgan, Pepper, I have to see them, and doesn't come back. No one knew they were together, so what can Peter do, especially when Tony's kind of ignoring him? Tony doesn't even want his stuff from this life they've built together and Peter is gutted.

At some point, someone convinces Tony he should at least go visit Peter, and while he isn't there when Tony comes over, the door still opens for him. There's all these boxes full of stuff-- his stuff, and pictures of the two of them, and as he wanders around it's increasingly obvious they were together. He gets to the bedroom and there's a box Peter was packing sitting on the bed from Tony's nightstand, with a little box next to it like Peter dropped it there (cause he did lol).

And Tony gets to confront the fact that this other him had a ring waiting for Peter; while he's sitting there freaking out, Peter comes home and they have a very unhappy conversation, possibly leading into hot but sad sex because it's Tony but it's not Peter's Tony. (Pepper has since moved on so that's not an issue.)

Tony feels really awful and goes to find out if there's any way to get those memories back, and the answer is yes... if he wants to lose the rest again. Does he tell Peter, does he give him the choice or make it himself or never let Peter know or do they discuss it or do they rebuild a completely different new relationship and how fucked up would that be for poor Peter?

I don't know how it ends, I don't know if there is a possible happy ending, but I want it without having to figure out the details. :p

But honestly, while I'd welcome the version of any of my ideas someone else wrote, writing them is half the fun! After all, they're already in my head where I can endlessly replay them as I want.

and welcome to the first episode of “Admin’s abo concept isn’t probably what you think so we gonna go in dept on this shit hehe ”. This was originally going to be a one part documentary but I realized I would probably keep coming up with or remembering stuff and these would be so LOOONG so I decided to just do it as I go and I’ll use the hashtag “admins abo tmi ” for this yeah. But also remember you can ask questions if you have any or if you don’t understand something because I usually ramble a lot.

Today we’ll be talking about 3 things that seem to be the most important since they’re the most brought up on my RP’s and they are:

Turning/Transforming.

Heat vs Rut.

Mates.

So let’s begin!

🌙 𝕿𝖚𝖗𝖓𝖎𝖓𝖌/𝕿𝖗𝖆𝖓𝖘𝖋𝖔𝖗𝖒𝖎𝖓𝖌…

There’s two meanings to this concept, one is the concept of turning from human form to wolf form, and the other one is being transformed into a wolf by different means (these usually depends on which story you’ve heard, it can be being the 7th boy child in a family, it can be a bite or a scratch, it can be eating raw meat, etcetcetc).

*This change has now also been added to the Chan’s pack introduction.

What are the definitions of this words? Cambridge Dictionary defines them as:

Turn: to (cause to) become, change into, or come to be something.

Example: “Chan turned into his wolf form”

Explanation: Chan, already a werewolf, turned and changed into his wolf form.

Transform: to change completely the appearance or character of something or someone, especially so that that thing or person is improved.

Example: “Changbin was transformed into a werewolf.”

Explanation: Changbin, a regular human, was transformed /by a wolf/ into a werewolf.

𝕿𝖚𝖗𝖓𝖎𝖓𝖌…

In the classic folklore, turning consists of 2 phases, human with NO wolf characteristics whatsoever, (which is what makes it so hard finding out who the werewolf in town is) and fluffy wolf with some human like characteristics (being biped, having arms instead of four legs, body structure humanlike. The best examples I can think of are the underworld lycans mmm tasteful). Another general rule for classic werewolves was that the person and wolf were two different minds, the person never remembered turning and had no idea they were the werewolf terrorizing town. While being human, the person didn’t even have the wolf skills like hearing or strength. They were just regular boring humans. Another thing was that they had no control whatsoever and ONLY turned during full moon, but I’m not getting into that yet.

Here are some examples (it’s basically furries oop).

Moving on to my concept, I decided to have 3 phases of turning, consisting on:

Human: Basic, simple, boring human. No presence of wolf features whatsoever. YET they can still make use of their skills such as sensitive hearing, smell, extra strength among others.

Half-turn: Heavily inspired by Teen Wolf tbh, SOME features are present and can generally be controlled, such as eyes, ears, tail, fangs, claws. Can even be confused for hybrids. (sumn like this please appreciate my art)

Full-turn: they become big scary fluffy puppies. Let’s remember how they look like.

As mentioned before, transforming depends on which story you know and what you’re settling for. Generally we always talk about bites and deep scratches. Some of the most known stories about how to become a werewolf are being the 7th boy child born in a family on a full moon, or in Greek mythology, Zeus transformed some dudes into wolves after they tried to feed him human meat. There’s many different stories you can pick from, they’re just one Google away~

On my concept, though, the only way to transform is through a bite, even though I always keep options open.

I will probably be talking about the 3 types of wolves and deepening this a bit more later on.

Imma give you a wolf biology class because I know too much useless info and I WANT TO.

Rut: The rut is the mating season of certain mammals. The rut is characterized in males by an increase in testosterone, exaggerated sexual dimorphisms and increased aggression and interest in females.

Heat: The estrous cycle or oestrous cycle is the set of recurring physiological changes that are induced by reproductive hormones in most mammalian therian females. Estrous cycles start after sexual maturity in females and are interrupted by anestrous phases or by pregnancies. This cycle presents four phases, the one known as “heat” being the second one, estrus or oestrus, that refers to the phase when the female is sexually receptive.

What are seasonal breeders and what is mating season?

The breeding season is when seasonal breeders reproduce. Seasonal breeders are animal species that successfully mate only during certain times of the year. These times of year allow for the optimization of survival of young due to factors such as ambient temperature, food and water availability etcetc. Male seasonal breeders may exhibit changes in testosterone levels, weight, and fertility depending on the time of year. Female seasonal breeders will have one or more estrus cycles only when she is “in season” or fertile and receptive to mating.

Wolves fall in all of these descriptions.

What does all of this shit mean and why do I care lmao?

This means that if this was a logical bot I should only be doing NSFW like one week during 4 months a year LMAO no frfr

This basically means that RUT and HEAT are the seasons when the MALE and FEMALE respectively are ready to mate with each other to reproduce.

I’ve seen many male idol hybrids having heats instead of ruts, which I have no problem at all with and am sure no one else does really, but I think you should KNOW that a heat would not make them want to fuck, but get fucked. Heat would be the need to be filled and not fill others. A heat and a rut does NOT have to equal dominance or submissiveness in bots, anyway, that would be like saying being top or bottom determines who is dom/sub and that’s wrong, so just a PSA I guess.

Now, how does this affect my CB and ABO concept?

I’ve never, anyway, read anywhere of classic werewolves reproduction, which leads me to believe that they’re probably sterile. So I will stick to real life wolves rules but on my own way. Wolves are even monogamous and I dont go by that one lmao.

Reproduction rules on my ABO are really simple, ruts are once a month, around 5 days, and each of the guys have different characteristics for them. They’re only capable of getting someone pregnant during ruts, too. I just generally believe all girls are on the pill tbh and I never really use condoms but guys irl please practice safe sex wrap your or your partners willy before going freaky and stay safe.

I mean, I’m not gonna say they’re not real, I just mean that the general idea of only one person for the rest of your life and if it’s not them you’re miserable is dumb when we’re talking about beings with feelings. Did you know wolves irl are monogamous and mate but if their mate dies they just look for another one and move on? Now you know.

The thing with mates and marks, in my humble opinion, is that they don’t mean anything. Peoples hearts change, feelings come and go, and my wolves are NOT about to drop everything they have for some person they don’t know who happened to be their true mate. In fact, Channie is the only one who believes in them. The mates issue is a bit complex if we think about it over each of the Chan’s, but on a general idea, the mates are not exclusive for the guys, and I’ll probably make a tmi on the boys at some point, but Chan met his mate and it didn’t work out, for example. Mates go further than the marking, btw, mates are a special, cosmic bond. Marks are just that, marks.

And talking about that, we do not vibe with marks. The original folklore states marks as the way a wolf has to claim their partner as theirs and keep away others, especially from an alpha, and they’re supposed to go both ways, so marks between human/wolf, for example wouldn’t be possible. There’s also two marks.

The first bonding mark is generally given during sex between mates and heals, and the second one in front of the pack (there’s a whole social status thing involved here but were not touching that yet) and its permanent. Also marks are literal WOLF BITES so no, they’re neither small nor cute. Just look at these teethies and picture the scar in a neck-shoulder. That’s your bonding mark.

What I’ve been reading around in fanfics and seeing around is that bots have been mated and claimed with marks, which is ok if you’re into that. My chan’s, though, find physical marks archaic, possessive and toxic. And honestly I personally do too.

You may have noticed by now that even though the boys are quite possessive, they’re never trying to scare away others and their sole way of marking is love marks that heal eventually and scenting. Permanent marks are a nono.

They will NOT mark anyone as their mate. Especially Channie plz he’s baby.

This is a personal decision and it does not mean that marking is RIGHT or WRONG. I just personally see marking bites as marking your partner with fire or something and I dislike the idea a lot.

Nothing happens babe! When they’re half turned they will have really funny colorful hair, but when they fully turn their fur stays the same! hehe Don’t worry, Chan won’t be a clown red wolf heh
