Potentially a hot take but I think Dipper might be the most emotionally intelligent out of both sets of Pines twins, but in a very specific way.
Ford really isn't overly concerned about people's feelings; it's just not something he really tends to think about or prioritize. And when he does think about it, he tends to only view people's emotions based on how he would feel about the situation.
Stan is skilled in knowing how to handle people and quickly grasping their intentions. He's a con man that understands crowd mentality and how to play it. Overall, he just knows what people tend to want to hear and gives it to them, so quick with a lie. And because of this, he's wary of when people tell him what he wants to hear. He's a con man that recognizes a con, and knows a person's intentions and desires are important so he looks for them. But he doesn't really know how to interact and connect with people genuinely and openly. He wants to have genuine connections, specifically with his family, but for all of his life he's either delt with people that didn't care for him and made it obvious (his father), people who didn't seem as invested in having a relationship with one another as he did (Ford), or people he's had to constantly lie to and thrown on a persona to survive (his years being homeless and being Mr. Mystery). Because of this, genuine feelings and connections are difficult for him to navigate and articulate, or even really understand.
Mabel, out of all of them, definitely cares the most about other people's feelings. She spends time thinking about others feelings long after the fact, considers them carefully, with the end goal of everyone being happy. But she can get so caught up in what she thought would make everyone happy, that it can be difficult for her to take a step back and look at if what she's trying to do is really the right thing for people.
But Dipper is the one that tends to just, like, quickly grasp the heart of an emotional situation and just points it out. And, unlike Mabel, he doesn't really prioritizes everyone being happy, so when he points it out he tends to be very blunt about it. He also, surprisingly, is the first to take a step back and look at a situation, and what the right thing to do is, even if it's not what he wants, something Mabel and Ford have difficulties with. He also doesn't get upset if he's the one in the wrong, able to admit it easily once he realizes it and immediately has a desire to amend what he did wrong. However, he too has a blind spot, as does everyone. This blind spot being his paranoia; if he doesn't fully know about the situation, the conclusion he'll end up at will always be the worst one (stan portal situation). Dipper very rarely takes previous loyalties into consideration when trying to figure out what's going on; if it's someone he knows and loves he'll try to find out proof that go against his suspicions, but if he doesn't immediately find any he'll jump to an answer that speaks to his paranoia (opposite from Mabel, who is predisposed to firmly see the best in others even if there is evidence proving otherwise).

Vice Dorm Leaders getting along with PokƩmon:
It didnā€™t take long for the vice dorm leaders to get involved with the Pokemon too. The shenanigans that happened with them are... interesting to say the least.
Trey + Slurpuff
Tumblr media
ā€œThe Unbirthday Party was a success thanks to this little guyā€™s sense of smellā€¦ Though I should expect to make a large portion for it, the number of sweets it ate was shocking for everyone!ā€
Trey was a bit skeptical when Phoebe lent him Slurpuff and told him that chefs would use them to sniff out the freshest ingredients but if they say so then it must be worth a try.
Needless to say, he was pleasantly surprised to see the cake thing nudge him to the best ingredients to use for his sweets. He rewarded Slurpuff with a spoon covered in frosting or batter. The PokƩmon mostly stayed out of his way and only has to bring him some tools or supplies.
When he presented the sweets he made, everyone including Riddle were almost knocked into a food coma with how good it was. Even Trey was lost in the trance of the flavor, but he was snapped out of it when he spotted Slurpuff eating almost half of the buffet table, he rushed to it and told it to ask him for more sweets to prevent any problems.
Ruggie + Crobat
Tumblr media
ā€œThat Phoebe kid feeds you this? Aww man! Iā€™m so jealous, now I wish I was a PokĆ©mon!ā€
That one-time Ruggie came across Crobat was when he passed by Ramshackle to see a large bat creature with four wings eating from a large bowl filled with berries, Poke puffs and even poffins. The amount it ate distracted him from his usual task and he only snapped out of it when Crobat made eye-contact with him.
Crobat wasnā€™t sure why a stranger was here but it assumed it wanted food so Crobat nudged a Poke puff towards Ruggieā€™s direction before going back to chow down. Ruggie didnā€™t plan on asking it for any food, he was just curious but since it offered, who is he to decline? Picking up the Poke puff and taking a bite, he immediately devours it till thereā€™s nothing left. That was the tastiest pastry he has had; they were even better than the ones in the cafeteria.
He hears Phoebe call out to Crobat and he took this time to scram before he was found. That kid pampers their creatures like royalty, he admits that he once had the thought that wishes that he was a PokƩmon too. Ruggie now sneaks to go to Ramshackle and Crobat sneaks him a portion of its food, Ruggie repays it by offering some to it as well. They just formed this unspoken lunch trade. The one time Phoebe made malasadas for Crobat, Ruggie was in heaven lemme tell you.
Phoebe has no idea about this, this was just a secret thing between Crobat and Ruggie. One time Phoebe was with Crobat in the field and it spots Ruggie, Crobat immediately goes to him and flies around him. Phoebe assumed that Crobat took a liking to Ruggie because it probably sensed that heā€™s a foodie. Oh, if only she knew.
Jade + Lapras
Tumblr media
ā€œSuch kind yet protective eyes you have~ Iā€™m far from trustworthy yet you nuzzle against me like a seal, this is quite interestingā€
Phoebe asked Azul if she can be allowed to have her water PokƩmon swim about in Octavinelle. The lake is much too small for the larger ones. Azul gave her permission but in exchange she has to work part-time at the lounge, Azul is capitalizing as usual. The mention of PokƩmon being at Octavinelle brought more customers to the lounge, the one that got the most attention was Lapras.
It was very friendly and even paused to look inside the lounge from the windows. Phoebe was not surprised that Lapras was friendly, what she didnā€™t expect was that it got attached to Jade for some reason. She would have thought it was Sharpedo or even Eelektross who would get along with the cunning vice dorm leader. But instead, Lapras is swimming happily in circles wanting Jadeā€™s attention.
Jade, of course, finds the PokĆ©mon endearing and would always take his time to pet it whenever heā€™s on break. Even offering Lapras a small treat or two, Lapras is enjoying it. There was a rare occasion that Jade swam with Lapras in his eel form, at times he swims alongside Lapras or have it chase him through the water, other times he just sleeps on Laprasā€™ back as it swam.
Jamil + Serperior
Tumblr media
ā€œQuite the proud one you are, at least youā€™re more tolerable than Kalimā€¦ā€
Kalim promised a favor without consulting Jamil again, this time it was to look after some of her PokĆ©mon. Kalim got caught up in the excitement of having to get close with those strange creatures that he didnā€™t think that it could be troublesome.
Jamil stopped in his tracks at the sight of Kalim with a large green snake behind him. Boy did he get quite the scolding from Jamil, but what can he do now that Kalim as already offered? He just decides to ā€œhelpā€ him take care of Serperior. Thankfully, Phoebe provided a list of ingredients that Serperior likes, the list was as long as an A4 paper but at least Jamil has his options cut out for him. He doesnā€™t have to guess and waste any food.
Serperior mostly kept to itself and wanders around the dorm, inspecting its surroundings. Kalim tries to hug it but it just wraps its body around him and places him a few feet away before slithering off. Serperior will feel terrible if he smacks the sunshine boy away, so it places him at a good distance.
Jamil often sees it staring at him, its sharp eyes resemble his own. He never expected to have it get attached to him in a rather proud way. Everywhere Jamil goes, Serperior follows at a distance and there were rare moments it coils near his bedroom door, and Jamil walks out one morning only to fall into its coils. This strange behavior was suspicious at first but then Jamil learned to get used to it. Serperior is a curious one but then he thinks its more tolerable than Kalim.
Speaking of Kalim, Serperior sensed that most of Jamilā€™s stress comes from Kalim being a goofball that he is, so it catches Kalim and puts him in a coil hold when heā€™s about to do something reckless.
Rook + Oricorio
Tumblr media
ā€œOh my! Such grace and beauty you possess to dance with excellent skills! Wait, you mean to tell me it had four forms? I would like to see it, please show meā€
He spotted the dancing bird PokĆ©mon in the field when they were having a PE class. Oricorio was in its Pom-Pom form and doing a cheer dance to motivate Grimm to fly better. He couldnā€™t help but approach Phoebe and ask her about Oricorio.
Needless to say, he was very interested. A creature that has four different forms that represents a different environment? It was like a fox having more than just a winter coat. He asked to see its other forms, it would be tiring to have it change forms constantly so Phoebe just brings out Rotom to show him the pictures of the Oricorio forms. Rook admired the pictures and each one gave off a different kind of beauty.
Oricorio, being a simp for pretty boys, took a liking to Rook. He was just so charming, Oricorio does its happy dance and follows him whenever it sees him. Phoebe once asked him if he can keep Oricorio company for a few days, he accepts the offer and he brings it to Pomefiore. Oricorio also liked Vil and Epel due to how charming their looks are, Vil is fine with it as long as it isnā€™t a troublemaker while Epel is kind of bummed out when he thinks it likes him because of his fragile looks.
The moment Rook was shown its changed forms in person, he is taking out his camera and is taking burst shots from all sorts of angles and lighting. Out of all the four forms Oricorio has, he loves its Baile form the most, the way it dances with embers around it in a display of passion and power. He looks forward to Phoebe asking him to look after Oricorio again.
Ortho + Emolga & Pachirisu
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ā€œHey! That tickles, big brother you should try and pet them! Theyā€™re like those plushies you sometimes order in your room. Isnā€™t it like having your favorite plushy as a pet?ā€
Emolga and Pachirisu are both cheeky PokĆ©mon and a duo for trouble. Emolga and Pachirisu were seen making studentā€™s hair go static and stick out with small electric waves.
Ortho spotted the two behind some bushes and immediately approaches them, this is the first time Emolga and Pachirisu were caught off guard and startled. Their electric attacks donā€™t do much to Ortho due to his robotic circuits, if anything he considers it as some form of tickling.
Ortho thought how cute they looked and they resemble plush toys in his brotherā€™s room. Emolga and Pachirisu was weirded out by Ortho at first but his cheerfulness was infectious and it didnā€™t take long for them to treat him as part of their group. Whenever Ortho passes by, the two would pounce on him and swing from his arms and legs, Ortho likes this game, he finds it useful to use his scanner to see where they might pop out next.
One time, he took them to see his brother and they made his hair stick out. He was startled but Ortho found it amusing, he got to see what would his hair look like if it stuck out. Emolga and Pachirisu still do their pranks but its less due to them wanting to find Ortho first.
Lilia + Dragapult
Tumblr media
ā€œA prankster and yet you dote on the little ones on your horns? We might be cousins from a distant world, fufu~ Letā€™s go scare Sebek some more!ā€
Dragapult pranks Sebek a lot, poor boy gets it from almost a lot of PokƩmon. It once shot a Dreepy in his shirt causing him to squirm and try to get it out, he looked like he was doing a crazy monkey dance. Lilia appreciates this little prankster and he would join it in tormenting other students but mostly Sebek because his reactions were very amusing to watch. The two even went and started a pranking competition where they tally their number of pranked students for the whole month.
Lilia was allowed to play and hold the small Dreepy that reside in Dragapultā€™s horns. He melted at the sight of the little cuties playfully tussling his hair, which gave him an idea to mimic Dragapultā€™s horns(?) With an easy hair growth potion and a LOT of hairspray, he came to school with his hair in Dragapultā€™s style.
The sight alone in Diasomnia sent everyone, including Malleus into a stunned silence, Dragapult added fuel to the flame by letting the Dreepy reside in his hair for the rest of the day. Crowley saw Lilia and mumbled how the trends have gotten crazier every day. Cater took pictures and he laughed at the sight because it was so outlandish. Kalim was confused but precious boy still appreciated his hairstyle nonetheless. The perfect chaotic duo.

Diary of a Junebug

A magically spooky adventure in the woods
Pippa and Mariposa are back at the camp for a magical adventure! Angie and Willow are with us as well, making it the first of hopefully many fun camping trips for Team Magic. Hopefully next time Luna and Skully - and maybe even Cassie, in an unexpected turn of events.
After having a great time during her first gyroid adventure, Pippa wanted to design her own gyroid themed furniture so she and Daisy Jane have been working on that for the past few months. Then Mariposa got involved with planning the event and it went from a fun scavenger hunt in the campsite to an all out adventure in the Moonlit Woods! So along with collecting gyroids we're also collecting trinkets and herbs for Luna and Skully since the woods are full of them during this time of year.
It's also a good excuse to explore this area since we rarely go out this far. Tom Nook warned us that the Moonlit Woods can be tricky to navigate, which is why I've been kinda avoiding that spot. There's still a lot of places outside the camp we have yet to explore and now that I've gotten familiar with the camping grounds after three years of living here, it's time to venture into the unknown.
I'm glad that Pippa's enjoying the camp. Since she and Almie first made the trip here Almie had been saying that being out here has lifted up her spirits a lot. Visiting the camp, training with Luna, and becoming friends with Mariposa, Angie, and Willow has helped her come out of her shell a lot. Things have been looking bright for her - she's doing well in school, her latest blood work is promising, and she's learning more and more about her magic every day.
Mariposa's the one who brought Team Magic together. Pippa and Angie were sort of loners, Willow part of the popular crowd, and Mariposa's the new kid in town. In the short time she's been in Rosevine, Mariposa has shaken things up for Luna and the gang in ways they never expected. She and Pippa haven't known each other for long but it seems like they've been friends forever!
A lot has happened since I last saw them at Emmaline and Minnie's wedding. Luna and Cassie have reached a truce so now they're trying to reconcile. The gyroid event happened to be perfect timing as Mariposa and the others felt it was best to give the sisters some space and privacy. No one really knows how they feel about Cassie but they're willing to hear her out, especially since she willingly threw away everything she worked hard to help Luna, Skully, and Mariposa. Cassie always struck me as someone who wants to bring out the best in others but at the same time won't hesitate to walk all over them to get ahead.
Angie's been coming out of her shell too. Now she's been doing some training with Luna and her magic has tremendously improved. She and Pippa were the kind of friends who mainly stuck together because they didn't fit in anywhere else. It's not that they didn't get along but they were just kinda shoved to the side and ignored by everyone else. Then Mariposa came along and they became notorious for getting caught up in magical shenanigans. It's good to see her perform spells with confidence!
Willow was an unexpected surprise. She comes from a powerful family so she and her siblings carry the weight of their family name. Before Mariposa came along Willow wasn't exactly friendly towards Pippa and Angie. She didn't antagonize them like some of her friends did but more like gave them the cold shoulder and walked all over them for her own personal gain. Turns out that she and Mariposa started off on the wrong note because Willow felt threatened by her. But after a few more missteps Willow grew to like her, and in turn she made amends with Angie and Pippa.
If the timing of the gyroid event wasn't already good, the fact that Willow's parents are out of town is even better. If her parents were home, they probably wouldn't let her come out here. Good thing Emmy and Eddie aren't strict, plus they like Mariposa so they're more than happy to let their baby sister go out on a week long camping trip, even if she has to hobble around in crutches.
Although she can't go climbing and running around, Willow didn't miss out too much on the fun. Not too long after the wedding shenanigans happened and Willow managed to save the day but took a nasty fall in the process. Basically, she landed in a way that not only badly broke her leg but also messed up her back a bit as well. So for a couple weeks she had to use a wheelchair until her legs felt normal again and since last week she's only needed crutches to get around.
We arrived at the woods around 9 so we can make the most out of the day. The thing with these gyroids is that they're easy to miss, especially in a place like the Moonlit Woods. Rare gyroids are always in places that are either difficult to navigate or hard to get to, which is why they're rare. I've rarely come across gyroids that can glow and I've never seen gyroids that can turn transparent like a ghost. It seems fitting for something like that to only be found in a place like the Moonlit Woods.
What I've learned about the woods is that you can't let it outsmart you. Another reason why the stars have aligned for this event is because of Team Magic. Whatever challenges the woods throws at us, the girls always find a way.
Angie's the expert at herbal magic, no cluster of overgrown weeds and thorns is too difficult for her to untangle. Like I said, she's really improved with her magic, especially since discovering not too long ago that she has an innate connection with plants. I can also see that Mariposa has been taking Luna's training to heart, connecting with nature and conjuring spells with the elements. Pippa's magic is different from Willow and Angie's because she's not a witch like they are, but like Mariposa she's found ways to apply Luna's guidance with what works for her. The three of them make a great team!
While searching for treasures, we came across a bunch of signs scattered throughout the woods. We got curious so Mariposa and Pippa decided to try and translate the symbols. The codes turned out to be clues left behind by someone who embarked on a quest to find the ultra rare cocostar tree. Of course, we had to go out and find the tree too because none of us can resist a quest!
According to an old journal left in a log by the explorer, the cocostar tree is a valuable resource. The bark can be used for tea and potions, the tea is believed to relax those in Ā distress and extreme emotional turmoil as well as stomach troubles in general. The fruit of the tree is edible, the taste described as sweet with a browned caramel flavor, good to pair with sweet and savory foods. The leaves are also edible and is said to have a distinct, bittersweet flavor that's good for cooking and making tea.
What puts many off from exploring the woods is how unpredictable it is to navigate. Retracing your steps would drive you crazy because the paths always change. A lot of things about the woods don't make much sense so we just have to accept that. In this case, it makes the adventure a lot more fun!
So while collecting gyroids, we stocked up on berries. Mariposa carved light glyphs in the dirt so we can see where we're going. Angie was able to communicate with the plants and use them as a guide. Willow used her crutches to test out some areas that looked like they might be full of pitfall seeds, saving us a lot of trouble in the process. Pippa researched the codes and puzzles scattered throughout the woods.
By putting our heads together, we managed to find the elusive cocostar tree! Mariposa was the first to spot the tree, a happy accident as she misfired a light orb while we were fighting off vines that ambushed us in the dark. The explorer was right, the tree is massive! The fruit is unlike anything I've ever seen before - it looks more like a fancy dessert than something that grew from a tree. Because the tree's so big, there's more than enough fruit for us to experiment with and for the girls to take back to Rosevine. It took a lot of work, but we did it!
Getting out of the Moonlit Woods was an adventure itself. Since we didn't expect to go on a cocostar tree quest, I wasn't sure how we were gonna lug all this stuff out. Of course, Team Magic found a way to carry the extra stuff that can't fit into backpacks. We'll be back in a couple days to retrieve more gyroids and maybe go on another quest if we stumble across something.
As soon as we got back to the camp, we got to work crafting gyroid stuff and trying out the cocostars. Pippa and Daisy Jane really outdid themselves with the gyroid designs and now the others want to help plan future events. Looks like the camp's all set for gyroid events in the next few months. I can't wait to see what kind of designs the others will come up with!
After spending all day in the woods, it's nice to hang out at the campsite and relax. Since Angie and Willow didn't really get to explore the hangout spots today, that's what we're gonna do tomorrow.

Herald Commentary
Tumblr media
Iā€™m happy with the wide range of cards that people jumped into for this contest! There was a wide range, but a lot of modern ideas. I think because of Magicā€™s contemporary focus on legendary creatures, many people sought ideas that came from more recent sets. Looking at the entries, what do you think?
Letā€™s get to commentary!
Tumblr media
@ace-hoboā€‹ ā€” Caller of Devastation
Thatā€™s a pretty cool name, and itā€™s an interesting flavor that youā€™re going for. I would have rather seen a card that focused on a singular card and follower, one that fits an isolated flavor. For the sake of this contest, it makes sense that you would name the cards. I could see this printed in a regular set as a card that tutored for a God creature card or something.
Tumblr media
@aethernalstarsā€‹ ā€” Caller of the Harvest
Alright, it took me a second to understand this card. I donā€™t think that almost-irremovable devotion is a pain in extended formats, but in a vacuum itā€™s a pain in the butt, and Iā€™m not a huge fan. Still, a cool idea for mechanical execution. Still trying to figure out how a plant becomes a cleric. Additionally, those symbols: it should beĀ ā€œGW, T:ā€ with the comma and space.
Tumblr media
@cas-420 ā€” Crackling Boltkin
Now this is fun. Honestly, I would have liked this card better as either a graveyard summon or a library summon, not both. Iā€™m really proud of you for the wording on this, though. Itā€™s a complex idea that you pulled off well. The double triggers plus the double search makes this card feel like itā€™s trying to do a little too much, but I like the name and I like the concept. It feels like a contemporary elemental.
Tumblr media
@dabudderā€‹ ā€” Gerrard, Legacy Protector
Itā€™s interesting to see white using the graveyard as aĀ ā€œkeep this secret safeā€ kind of thing. I think. Man, that ability though... I can imagine this being pretty crazy broken in some capacity. Stacking a bunch of different legendary artifacts and big bombs or something... I donā€™t know, this card feels powerful and worrying but it probably isnā€™t broken. Small note: The card is justĀ ā€œWeatherlightā€ lol
Tumblr media
@dimestoretajicā€‹ ā€” Yar-Kul, the Maggot
I actually remember reading about Yargle way back in the Dominaria days. Man, wish I could have afforded more Magic back then... Anyway. I personally find theĀ ā€œcard within a cardā€ concept pretty fun. Thereā€™s nothing really objectively wrong with this card. If I had to find a criticism, it feels minorly clunky that one legend is a search while one is just a sacrifice. Comparing that to that Reef Worm thing from the Commander set, itā€™s just a little iffy. But it fulfills the contest and I like it.
Tumblr media
@ezuradā€‹ ā€” Mad Cultist
Looks like you forgot to change the name in that activated ability there? Always always proofread. Conceptually, I think I like this card. For a common, I would have added reminder text to the Madness instead of adding flavor text, as cool as the flavor is. Interesting take on anĀ ā€œany number of Xā€ ability. This card also needs a shuffle clause after the search, FYI. Not a bad entry!
Tumblr media
@fractured-infinityā€‹ ā€” Hunterā€™s Prey
I donā€™t know enough about the Ikoria storyline, and thatā€™s on me. Regardless, I get it, and itā€™s a fine enough tutor even if it is pretty easy to abuse. Itā€™s a unique take on the tutor, and itā€™s a cool flavor to set out prey to summon your Snapdax. Two wording criticisms: One, the name doesnā€™t need to be in quotes; and Two, the shuffle clause can be added to the previous sentence e.g.Ā ā€œWhen ~ dies, its owner may search their library for a card named Snapdax, Apex of the Hunt, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle their library.ā€ Minor things, no biggie.
Tumblr media
Genex-P ā€” Herald of the Night
Weā€™re going WAY back. I had to search this card because I was actually totally unfamiliar by name alone. I really like that! And holy crap, I didnā€™t know that Nightstalker was a real creature type. I do wish that the tokens contributed to the search, though. It feels weird that the first ability still requires you to have a different Nightstalker to activate it. Still, neat idea, pretty fun, and a great old callback with modern updates. Amazing flavor text, too.
Tumblr media
@gollumniā€‹ ā€” Incarnation of Aclazotz
And Iā€™m also not super familiar with Ixalan story, either, but that doesnā€™t mean this card isnā€™t cool. Itā€™s complex, and itā€™s a little confusing to take things and turn them about, but the card itself plays well. I would really have liked for that token to have indestructible, personally, but that would have been a little too powerful for five mana. Still, cool concept, and an interestingĀ ā€œland tutorā€ in black.
Tumblr media
@greensunzenithā€‹ ā€” Meroe Revane
Flavorfully, I think this card is really cool, even if Iā€™m not positive that it makes sense considering... Would Nissaā€™s mom be on Zendikar where all this takes place? IDK. Anyway, mechanically, the fact that you have to have to have both the cards to do anything is a big ask. Nissa Revane, the card, was pretty egregious for asking to have that card itself. But yeah, Iā€™m not the biggest fan of this cardā€™s mechanics. Still a fun card conceptually.
Tumblr media
@gus-goose ā€” Herald of the Hunt
Another Snapdax stan? Did Snapdax become the ultimate Ikoria stan when I wasnā€™t looking? Anyway. I think that the combination of cards is a flavorful way to express devotion to Snapdax and I like how you included the mutate clause. Iā€™m not a fan of how the ability works mechanically. Building around this card is pretty moot, because the setup feel like too much when you could just get Snapdax itself. Were there enough of those in Ikoria? There were a lot of creatures there... I donā€™t know, this card just feels like too much work.
Tumblr media
@haru-n-harkelā€‹ ā€” Moonrise Dragster
I like the concept of searching for a flavorful aura like Caught in the Brights. Itā€™s a fun and interesting way of tutoring for control cards. Thereā€™s a lot about this card that Iā€™m not sure I understand. Why such a high crew cost? The mana cost to P/T ratio feels all out of whack. Iā€™m also not sure why thereā€™s theĀ ā€œdoesnā€™t untapā€ clause. Is it flavorful? Is it a mechanical addition? I just donā€™tĀ ā€œgetā€ a lot of this cardā€™s decisions. Power-level wise, getting the aura from your graveyard is too much. Itā€™s not a weak enchantment.Ā
Tumblr media
@i-am-the-one-who-wololoesā€‹ ā€” Devoteeā€™s Squire
Itā€™s a cute idea, I think. A little bit underwhelming to search for a card to search for a card. Iā€™m not sure why this card mechanically exists. Flavorfully, this also takes place on Theros, Greek mythology, which as far as I know doesnā€™t have knights or squires.
Tumblr media
@ignorantturtlegamingā€‹ ā€” Whirling Waves
This card is...powerful. I think the first ability is crazy, but fine. Second ability is insanely overpowered in limited. Third ability is holy cow powerful, assuming you meanĀ ā€œX on eachā€ and notĀ ā€œX distributed.ā€ Conceptually, I like this card a lot and I think that itā€™s a cool summon. In practical terms, the power level needs significant tweaking.
Tumblr media
@karkatvantasticvantasā€‹ ā€” The Second Scourge
Interesting!Ā ā€œTapped and crewingā€ is a fantastic little tweak with a flavorful idea behind it that I fully support. Seven mana for that cost, though, is... It feels like a little much, but it probably isnā€™t? I would have made this card colorless, honestly. I donā€™t think the Grixis colors are really useful here.Ā ā€œMenaceā€ should be lowercase. This is a unique card, and I think I like it. Probably should be a rare.
Tumblr media
@koth-of-the-hammerpants ā€” Krajling Incubator
ā€œEgg Ooze.ā€ Love it. Great flavor text and a pretty fun card thatā€™s very Simic. Two small notes:Ā ā€œRemoveā€ should be capitalized, and the card needs a shuffle clause. Aside from that, I think that this card is a pretty fun uncommon. I wish there was a way that it could put counters on creatures.
Tumblr media
@misterstingyjackā€‹ ā€” End Times Proselytizer
Thirteen colorless nonland permanents is a LOT. Even if you get something crazy off that first trigger, getting up there is a lot. Thirteen creatures would be enough, honestly. If you would have an easier time casting Emrakul by herself than using this card, then things might be a little too crazy. Also, why doesnā€™t the first ability just sayĀ ā€œfor each non-Eldrazi creature that died this turnā€? I think this is a cool card, but itā€™s just not as good as the creature youā€™re searching for. I do love how you cast it from outside the game.
Tumblr media
@ozthearistocratā€‹ ā€” Oketraā€™s Blade
Itā€™s a concept that I appreciate for sure. Getting a creature at different points in the story feels like a Time Spiral-esque idea. Honestly, though, Iā€™m not a fan of the mechanics here. There are two different sets for a reason, and the spirit of the contest is a little different than that. Still, not a bad idea. FYI, I would really look into getting your MSE set up with fonts, because this card is REALLY hard to read.
Tumblr media
@real-aspen-hoursā€‹ ā€” Oracle of Oracle of Mul Daya
10/10. In all seriousness, keep this in a file for something that can let you play land and Shaman cards from the top of your library or something. Not a bad concept. I am laughing at the name, though.
Tumblr media
@reaperfromtheabyssā€‹ ā€” Terrible Flamespeaker
Once more, the name of the card doesnā€™t need to be in quotes. As for the cardā€™s mechanics, this one is interesting. I like how it encourages mono-red shenanigans. Itā€™s a powerful on-curve card by itself which is pretty cool. I like how it tells the story of a world more than it does of a legendary creature, even if it is a rare searching for a rare, which feels... IDK, a little off with the nature of this contest. Thereā€™s nothing objectively wrong with this card besides the quotes, though, so call it a success.
Tumblr media
@shakeszx ā€” Beast Blessed Sword
Was there something about the Eldraine story that I missed? When was there a sword involved? Why isnā€™t there a hyphen to make itĀ ā€œBeast-Blessedā€ - unless itā€™s a different meaning? Iā€™m a little confused. Regardless, the card itself I like. Itā€™s recursion for Kenrith, which is a pain in the ass, but itā€™s a fun card regardless, I think. Having played against Kenrith, Iā€™m not the biggest fan, but I know heā€™s fun to play, so I canā€™t complain.
Tumblr media
@shandylambā€‹ ā€” Scrap // Salvage
Okay. Straight-up, this card is doing too much. If this was on an actual Aftermath card, it would be packed to the gills and be practically unreadable. Scrap is probably the best side, even though it should sayĀ ā€œput it onto the battlefieldā€ and justĀ ā€œsacrifice an artifactā€ since you can only sacrifice permanents you control anyway. Salvage is just... I donā€™t know, I donā€™t get it. It requires both a legendary permanent and a target for it, and it doesnā€™t feel like a legendary event. The thing aboutĀ ā€œlegendaryā€ instants and sorceries was that they had a creature or planeswalker attached to them that made them feel epic. This card just doesnā€™t have that. I feel like you put too many ideas into too small a space.
Tumblr media
@sigiledpaladinā€‹ ā€” Alarm of the Tenth
Why does this card search your graveyard too? Thatā€™s one hair in an otherwise fine cupcake of a card. Itā€™s just a bit of a shame that it doesnā€™tĀ ā€œdoā€ anything when it first comes out. Also, the second sentence should beĀ ā€œThis ability costs (4) less to activate if [etc].ā€ Itā€™s a fine tutor, just a little underwhelming.
Tumblr media
@snugzā€‹ ā€” Sliver Hivecaller
Would you believe that I actually love this card? Would you also believe that, in my opinion, this card would have been a winner......... if it wasnā€™t a Sliver? With the exception of the old legendary Slivers, all Slivers should inform other Slivers. And, well, this card doesnā€™t feel like a sliver. I love it, I really do. But itā€™s just not Sliver-y. I know thatā€™s useless and boring commentary, but man, trust me, this card is great. Just make it, like, a Human Shaman or something? Ooh, or a mutant.
Tumblr media
@starch255ā€‹ ā€” Oracle of Ancestry
This card would break eternal formats. Tutoring for Ancestral Recall and Brainstorm is... Wow. I donā€™t know, I might just be paranoid, butĀ ā€œtutor for some of the most powerful draw and thinning in Magicā€™s historyā€ is something to be paranoid about, right? Iā€™m not going crazy? Considering the wide range of formats and places that these cards come from, itā€™s not out of the question to assume that that was the intention of the card. Not sure how I feel about that.
Tumblr media
@yesimnotrealanymore ā€” Rise of Emrakul
The good: Itā€™s certainly flavorful. The criticism:
3BBBB is way too costly, and color-heavy.
You donā€™t necessarily needĀ ā€œaā€ in that first ability. JustĀ ā€œCreate Cryptolithā€
Second ability should be two sentences.Ā ā€œIts,ā€ notĀ ā€œitā€™sā€
ā€œDestroy up to four target creatures. For each creature destroyed this way, its controller creates a colorless 3/2 Eldrazi creature token.ā€
The Roman numeral for four isĀ ā€œIV.ā€
In order for that last ability to work, Emrakul would need three time counters on it and then gain vanishing. Additionally, we need to suspend our disbelief that both sagas and vanishing exist in the same set as Eldritch Moon.
~
Thank you all for your entries! A new legendary contest starts tomorrow.

Note
You've (famously) done an entire fic where Mai riffs on various shippings, but I'd love to know what your *personal* thoughts on all the different ATLA ships are. Obviously, I know you like Maiko, Maikka, and Sokkla, but how about a bunch of other ships? Like Kataang, or Taang, or Sukka, or Tokka, or Jinko, or Yukka, or Toko, etc.? How about F/F or M/M ships?
ā€œMaiā€™s Ramblingsā€ is still famous? Huh. I still need to figure out how to get it on AO3.
Anyway, Iā€™m afraid my answers can all probably be summarized as ā€œItā€™s fine.ā€ I like the ships I like pretty much because the involved characters are my favorites. But Iā€™ll give it a go and see what I can sayā€¦
Kataang: These two fit well together, and I think the cartoon does a pretty good job of showing how they have complementary personalities and priorities. If anything, it does too good a job, because there isnā€™t really any reason to delay them getting together until the finale aside from genre convention. Kataraā€™s ā€œconfusedā€ feelings never get an explanation, just a range of possibilities, leaving the fans to try to fill in what seems to be a critical part of the subplot. But when theyā€™re together, they build each other up nicely.
Taang: I like that they have similar heights, and the way they look when theyā€™re Earthbending in unison. Very superficial, I know, but themā€™s the breaks. After their initial difficulties, I think the cartoon did a good job as showing them as friends, and that can be a good basis for a romance. But I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever encountered a single fanfic for this pairing that I liked, and that affects my feelings on the pairing.
Sukka: Hereā€™s another ship I like because I like the characters. Sokka is one of my favorites, Iā€™m fond of Suki for her cool ninja abilities and the depth she could have, and I think they have complementary personalities. I like their storyline in the cartoon (itā€™s the romantic plotline with the most meat on its bones in the entire cartoon, IMO), with how it combines with both Sokka getting over his sexism and moving on after Yueā€™s death. It also had the best shippers, back in the glory days of ASN.
Tokka: I prefer this pairing as friends, simply because the romantic fanfics are all just variations on the ā€œSempai, please notice me!ā€ theme, and Iā€™ve never been into that. The non-romantic stuff for this pairing is all about them being buddies and getting into shenanigans and trolling the other characters and getting in over their heads and- well, all kinds of fun stuff. That said, friendship is a good basis for romance, so I think they could be good as a couple.
Jinko: Iā€™m kind of cool on this one because I donā€™t think Zuko really had any attraction to Jin, and Jin herself is a fairly generic character. The fun of their date is mostly about seeing Zuko being a dork (making it a much more successful implementation of the same idea behind the Fire Teen antics in ā€œThe Beach,ā€ especially with Azulaā€™s subplot there), and I just donā€™t see Zuko getting that invested in a strange girl at that point in his life/story.
Yukka: I like it as a doomed romance, but Iā€™m a bit biased on this one because the first episodes I watched of Avatar were ā€œLake Laogaiā€ and ā€œThe Earth King,ā€ so I knew that the ā€˜Sukiā€™ who Sokka is excited to see would win out over Yue. Yueā€™s death and role are cool, and her conflict between her duty and her feelings are compelling, but Iā€™m more invested in her as a tragic figure than someone who really works for Sokka. Sheā€™s his fantasy of his perfect mate, and even if she lived, I think heā€™d have to eventually realize that he needs someone less reserved. Likewise, I think she appreciates Sokkaā€™s goofy charm and his kindness, but Iā€™m not sure she really likes him for the full range of his character, including his flaws.
Toko: I like the dynamic between Zuko and Toph, but this is another one where I like it without the romantic flavor. However, while itā€™s another ā€œNotice me, Sempai!ā€ attraction, I think it works a little better than with Sokka because Zuko is a much more oblivious personality. He can completely miss Tophā€™s attempts to throw herself at him, no matter how blatant, while Sokka would eventually figure things out. But, romantic or just friends, I think this dynamic has good thing going with the way Zuko and Toph have similar parent-issues, but enough contrasts in their issues and situations so that they donā€™t feel like repeats of each other. They can start with an understanding of each other, while still being able to learn from each other. And I think Toph would fare best if pulled into Zukoā€™s Fire Lord life, if just because she is good at walking away. Which leads me toā€¦
Zutara: You didnā€™t ask about it, but I think it merits an opinion. Itā€™s not my favorite Katara ship, but ā€œThe Southern Raidersā€ shows how they can egg each other on in the worst ways, and that can be very interesting. Zuko and Katara also play off each other in high-energy ways, so I can see why it fascinates. But my biggest problem with it is that it supposes that Katara gets subsumed into Royal Fire culture, becoming ā€˜Fire Ladyā€™ and living her life in service to Zukoā€™s. Maybe if Zuko doesnā€™t become Fire Lord, it would be more interesting to me, but no fanfic wants to go that route. I donā€™t see Katara resisting assimilation in the way Toph would, if just because Katara would take it all seriously, while I can see Toph maintaining a wry detachment even while married to Zuko.
Katoph: Putting Zuko aside, Iā€™m in love with the idea that Katara was nursing a little crush on Toph that helped fuel their rivalry, and her confusion about Aang was caused in part by also having an attraction to Toph that she didnā€™t realize. I donā€™t see the pairing working out, if just because Toph is canonically boy-crazy, but I think it would be amusing to see Toph try to let Katara down gently and Katara not having a clue whatā€™s going on.
Kazula: I think these two could have an interesting dynamic, either romantically or not, but Iā€™ve not seen enough to really get a feel for it, and I havenā€™t gotten around to any of my fic ideas for bouncing them off each other, so I canā€™t say much about it. But I think they have enough similarities that thereā€™s something that could be done with them.
Ty Zula: I recently did a post on this.
MaiLee: I did a post on this as well.
Zukka: I struggle with this one. Zuko and Sokka have a solid friendship, and as Iā€™ve said, friendship is a good basis for romance. Iā€™ve even written a fic where Sokka is in a three-person marriage with Maiko, But I really do think thereā€™s something more in their Bros friendship, as established byĀ ā€œThe Boiling Rock,ā€ than any romance could bring out. A little distance is necessary for the way they keep measuring themselves against the other, and Iā€™d hate to lose that aspect.
Jetko: This is another one where I think the fandom over-estimates Zukoā€™s interest in the other party (the first being Jinko), but thatā€™s what makes it hilariously fun. Jet as Zukoā€™s obsessed stalker who develops a kind of romantic fascination with him is practically canon, and Zuko dealing with that in a surly and exasperated way sounds delightful.
Zukaang: I mean, isnā€™t this one canon? Make Aang a girl, and I donā€™t think youā€™d have to alter a single line of dialogue in the cartoon to get the entire audience to see it. The pure hero bringing the angsty anti-villain over to side of the angels is the basis for countless romances, and ā€œThe Firebending Mastersā€ shows wonderfully how these two would work as partners. And as the Avatar, Aang wouldnā€™t get subsumed into Zukoā€™s life as royalty. Honestly, itā€™s the second-best Zuko ship after Maiko, and thatā€™s only because Maiko snuck in there with the Childhood Friends bit.

Hiya ā˜…
Can I get matchups for A3 and ikevamp ? ( And maybe ikerev ? Hehe~)
Iā€™m an only child whoā€™s a virgo and INTP-T who like to draw traditionally (but only with pencil & pen tho) and loves basically all kinds of music. I like seeing people playing games, and I play some games a bit myself too. I draw and read novels/story books / comics in my free time ā™„ ( Iā€™m not into Harry Potter but apparently Iā€™m a Slytherin according to a test I take ).
I have many kind people surrounding me, but I have a hard time expressing what I want or whatā€™s on my mind, so I kinda keep to myself from other people, except a few people that are very close to me, and I also keep a distance between myself and new people, thinking that all the people that I know now are enough. This also makes it easy for me to be treated badly ( thank God I only have good people around me ), but donā€™t worry, I know my limits and I will fight back to those who mistreated me if Iā€™m super pissed. HARD.
Although Iā€™m like that, Iā€™m always open to people who just want somebody to lend an ear to their problem. Iā€™m probably the mom friend because of that. Though I donā€™t always properly ā€œlistenā€ to their rants, as sometimes they go into one ear and go immediately out the other ^^
I treasure people who are close to me, so once you get to know me, and if youā€™re a decent person, Iā€™ll stay loyal to you. And maybe because of my nature in the paragraph before, I may not show it if I love/care for you even tho deep down I really feel that way, but I will express it in any way I can ( though I can be shy doing so sometimes >//////
With friends, thatā€™s my age or close to my age, Iā€™m VERY wild around them šŸ˜…. I talk endlessly, I joke around, I get mischievous and play pranks with or towards them. Because I can adapt to other peopleā€™s personalities ( except the ones that are being mean for no reason ), I have many types of friends, from the nerds to the bad kids and popular ones, and that means my personality being influenced by all of them.
I donā€™t know if itā€™s a good or a bad thing, but I kinda regret it a lil bit from being influenced by the bad kids, since I curse a lot and getting into fights as a grade-schooler. But aside from that, I donā€™t really have regrets, since I think a lot about my life but I donā€™t let it sink an impression on me, so I can easily move on from a bad experience and treasure the good ones.
I act pretty much the same around other people, but how I act still depends on which friend group is I hanging with, since my mom is outgoing, and therefore I have many friends/connections/acquaintances through her. It makes it easier to get what I want because of her ( but Iā€™ve been less spoiled than how I was before, tho )
I donā€™t really do any kind of physical activity, whether itā€™s martial arts or just plain sports. The only thing I enjoy is dancing, swimming, and badminton, as Iā€™m pretty good at the latter ( though I rarely swim and been playing less badminton since I came to america). I donā€™t have good stamina, and just by walking pretty far, or by plain running got me feeling like Iā€™m on the verge of dying TT.
Iā€™m quite open to experiencing new stuff, and Iā€™ll be able to adapt to the new environments pretty easily ( at least thatā€™s what I think judging by how Iā€™m doing in America for four months since I went away for school ).
Iā€™m more of a ā€œbehind the scenesā€ person rather than the one whoā€™s in the spotlight, just because I donā€™t like all the troubles that go with being the center of attention. So when there are a group project and all that kind of stuff, Iā€™ll be the one who tells everyone what to do (but not the leader), and people sometimes rely on me if there no one else available. Even though Iā€™m heavily involved in things, if something goes wrong, Iā€™ll never take the blame first and try to blame it on something else lol, even if all fingers point to me. ( Iā€™ll try to make excuses for myself )
I have a straight, shoulder-length black hair with dark brown eyes, and Iā€™m pretty annoyed that Iā€™m around 5'0 ( I wish I can get taller ). You can say that Iā€™m chubby, with a few acne here and there decorating my face, and when Iā€™m hot, my whole body turns red ( my friends even joke about it saying my skin is like tomato or boiled crab every summer ). Because of this, I donā€™t like extreme temperatures, whether itā€™s very hot or very cold.
Iā€™m bilingual, and also know a bit of vocabulary in some other languages. I know quite some stuff, anything from what we learn in school, to useless fun facts, and itā€™s because I like to learn about new stuff ( not studying, theyā€™re two completely different things ). Iā€™m not big on practicing the knowledge that I have thought, Iā€™m only big in the theory department.
So, I think thatā€™s all for the description of myself. Iā€™m sorry if itā€™s too long or too short, as this is my first time requesting longer matchups ^^ thank you again in advance ā˜…
Thanks for the request and I hope you enjoy the matchup! Also, the length is totally fine because the more info, the more I get to use for your matchup. (I just cut the post at the very beginning because it would be a long scroll for everyone else lol).
A3!
Iā€™d pair you withā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ Citron!
Now matchups for A3! can be difficult because I have 20 different options, so there are way too many possibilities in my head. There were a few contenders for this one, but I ended up choosing Kazunari as your runner-up. Kazunari is an energetic fireball, so the two of you would have so much fun together! He loves your mischevious side and appreciates how much you contribute to the company with yourĀ ā€œmom friendā€ attitude. He canā€™t help but shower you with affection.Ā
However, I ended up choosing Citron as your match! Heā€™d really appreciate the fact that youā€™re one of the few people who donā€™t roll your eyes or ignore him when he makes mistakes while speaking.Ā  In fact, the two of you would spend time together to improve his English. Youā€™d make some fun games to help him to understand the right words with the right definitions. He does fairly well at first, but he seems to forget all of it after a day or two.
In return, Citron helps you with your mischevious shenanigans. He usually distracts the victim with his bright smile or confusing words, giving you more than enough time to lay your traps before the victim can notice. The only issue is that Citron gets very close to blowing your cover, but he manages to compensate for it in other ways.
Citron loves that youā€™re open-minded. With that mentality, he can show you all his favorite foods, clothes, and customs from his culture. The two of you have a great time as youā€™re introduced to new flavors, try on beautiful cultural clothing, and experience a different way of life. Every time he shows you something about his culture, it makes him feel closer to home.
As for your listening habits, Citron doesnā€™t really mind! Although he has a lot to say, he understands that itā€™s very easy to get lost with his vocabulary. Every time you find yourself zoning out, he assumes you got confused by his wording and simply moves on. Thereā€™s no arguments or squabbles here.
Citron is also amazed that youā€™re really good at leading despite being a behind-the-scenes person. Since the director is always busy, he often comes to you to see if thereā€™s anything he can do to help improve the quality of the plays or improve his acting. After having a one-on-one session with you, he always walks out feeling like a new and improved man.
Another Possibility: Kazunari Miyoshi
Ikemen Vampire
Iā€™d pair you withā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ Napoleon Bonaparte!
I was really getting Napoleon vibes from your description, but I also thought about Comte! Heā€™d love how you care for everyone in the mansion, especially since he has worked quite a bit to keep them all together. Also, youā€™d be the mom friend while heā€™d be the dad friend, so thatā€™s automatically an amazing ship. However, I ended up going with Napolean instead.
Now Napoleon is the easiest to trust (besides Comte) because heā€™s more human than anyone else in the mansion (so heā€™s not out to suck all the blood out of your body). He constantly keeps an eye on you, making sure that none of the other vampires harm you. Itā€™s really hard to keep you from harm, however, since you easily make friends with almost all the residents. Luckily, heā€™s caught Arthot creeping almost three times now.
Napoleon is the perfect muse for your art! You have him sit down in various poses so you can draw the perfect portrait. Although the French leader doesnā€™t understand why you chose him out of everyone in the mansion. Every time he asks, you look up from your painting board and ask,Ā ā€œWould you like me to paint a nude Arthur instead?ā€ Napolean laughs and doesnā€™t ask any more questions during the rest of your painting.
Napoleon is the first person to tease you about your red skin during extreme climates. Whenever itā€™s freezing outside, heā€™ll look to you with a hearty laugh and ask whether his presence is causing your entire body to blush. All you can do is glare at him because your teeth are too busy chattering against each other to form a response. So Napoleon takes off his jacket and slides it onto your shoulder.
Heā€™s also amazed that you donā€™t have any major regrets in your life, so Napoleon always encourages you to live your best life. Even if he doesnā€™t see the point of some of the things you do, Napoleon is always by your side. Heā€™s always willing to participate in your shenanigans for that reason, no matter how crazy they might be.Ā
You also introduce Napoleon to some of your favorite novels and comic collection. As he picks up a book, you begin to explain the synopsis of the story. After flipping through a few pages, he decides that heā€™ll take a look into it. A few days later, heā€™s read the entire novel and unfortunately ships your least favorite pairing. The two of you squabble over it all the time.Ā
Another Possibility:Ā  Comte de Saint-Germain
Dangerous Fellows
Iā€™d pair you withā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦.. Eugene!
Originally, I was going to go with Harry. Similar to what would have gone down with Comte, the two of you would be in charge of keeping the morale high within the group. Also, Harry is drawn to the fact that youā€™re willing to listen to his problems, especially when he needs a shoulder to cry on. However, I ended up going with Eugene.
Now Eugene is quite some trouble because of his less-than-friendly attitude. However, your friendly nature would slowly bring him closer to you. Although he tries to hide it, itā€™s very clear the Eugene likes your motherly attitude towards him. No one else gives him that much attention or affection (besides Harry).
Also, Eugeneā€™s personality blends perfectly with yourā€™s. Heā€™d a loud child who needs lots of attention without a sense of direction, while you prefer to stay on the sidelines while assigning roles to others. You give him purpose and love, which allows him to let his guard down around you.
The two of you bond because of your shared interest in music. While Eugene was more involved in music than you were, heā€™s glad that thereā€™s someone else who understands his passion for the subject. Sometimes, the two of you sneak away to hear Eugene play the piano in the music room. When he does, you close your eyes and forget about all the bloodshed around you. When heā€™s finished, you quietly applaud him and praise his skills. It reminds him of how much he used to love this feeling.
He declares his love for you by giving you a bag of his favorite chips. Itā€™s not a lot, but he really likes his chips. The fact that he gave you his chips means that he likes you more than his chips, which means he likes you a lot.
Additionally, both of you try to flake out from missions as much as possible. Neither one of you are great at running or other physical activity, so you guys try to convince Lawrence not to let you guys out. Unfortunately, everyone has to do their part and the two of you are shipped out together (Lawrence was trying to kill two bird with one stone), but yā€™all managed to come back without too much damage.
Another Possibility: Harry

The Baggage of Love
CoA prompt for Dec 2019 - ā€œLoveā€ [Call for Submissions]. Under a cut due to length; thereā€™s a few sections: Family, Friends, So-CalledĀ ā€œPuppy Loveā€, Love is a Four-Letter Word, andĀ ā€œnot gay as in happy, but queer as in i love youā€. (Link to that quoted post is provided.)
Family
In terms of feeling (personal experience) and topic (impersonal), thereā€™s an iceberg when approaching familial love (and the lack thereof). I donā€™t have the spoons for poking at the effects of our parentsā€™ lives on us, divorce, growing up in an essentially single parent house, or the fragility of familial love, usually framed in terms of acceptance, around queer and trans identities. Other people have written about the popularity of the Found Family trope in queer fandom, intergenerational trauma, and all kinds of family stuff, and I am but a simple blogger. I do remember that it was first with my family that I was exposed to the concept of love and saying that I loved them, and when push comes to shove, itā€™s not uncommon for stories to default to parental love as an important element of a characterā€™s story (ā€˜at least their family will always be there for themā€™).
Familial love can be fraught with complications of our own parent-child or caretaker-child baggage (if grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. raised us), but I suspect there are some aros who would say that itā€™s a different flavor of love from whatā€™s talked about in relation to aromanticism. The whole offspring thing is a whole ā€˜nother can of worms that could be a separate CoA prompt, but I can see child rearing being separate from the alloromantic relationship elevator in a way that isnā€™t incompatible with being aro, even if co-parenting is usually presented romantically in most media. (At least, off the top of my head, I associate it with ā€˜becoming a step-parentā€™ narratives, but that doesnā€™t mean non-romantic co-parenting isnā€™t out there.)
Friends
I know Iā€™ve seen it cross my dash about not emphasizing platonic love over romantic love or over emphasizing friends as a means of ā€˜aros are still humanā€™, but I didnā€™t save links for an idea of how discussions about prioritizing friendship have been happening. On the one hand, I can understand how uncomfortable and alienating this can be for aplatonic aros, but on the other hand, I spend most of my time in the allo-allo world with people who clearly prioritize romantic love over friendships, so it feels like I donā€™t actually experience very much prioritization of friendship. I donā€™t mean that the aro community shouldnā€™t be cautious of prioritizing platonic love and relationships. Itā€™s more of a personal balancing act, but Iā€™m not quite finding the right words for what I want to say right now.
(Aside: When I think of love that hasnā€™t been otherwise specified, I think of the middle school banter with some of my friends - something like a minor inconvenience leads to ā€œI hate youā€ ā€œAw, I love you, tooā€ - juxtaposed against feeling blindsided in high school that, apparently, Iā€™m misleading others if I say ā€˜I love youā€™ to a friend. Unbeknownst to me, I was dating someone for about two or three months in 9th grade because of that. I think of wanting to tell someone that I was proud of them facing one of their fears during the course of that dayā€™s work (ā€œI love you for tryingā€). I think of reassuring friends that I care about them.)
When I think of just the word ā€˜loveā€™, I think of an amorphous, unspecific feeling love that seems to reasonably include friendships. Some posts that were probably meant to stay personal/venting posts from aro bloggers use love to mean romance, but sometimes, that feels about as restrictive as allo-allo people assuming I must be dating a friend in order to say love. I may not feel as comfortable saying it out loud anymore, but I still love my friends in a way thatā€™s hard to name or specify any further yet isnā€™t romantic.
So-Called ā€œPuppy Loveā€
I feel like Iā€™ve explained this before, but I have memories of crushes that have faded and become hard to translate to present/future perceptions. One of my past rounds of shadow work was specifically aimed at recovering from a crush on a friend ending our friendship, and Iā€™ve always been embarrassed to talk about it, particularly as the final straw that set off one of my depressive episodes in high school. ~ One of those overperforming emos writing sad poetry about an unrequited crush? The emotional dysregulation of experiencing the first major heartbreak and becoming a depressed teen stereotype? ~ It was cringey before calling things cringey was a thing. (Also, please donā€™t go looking for my middle/high school era DA account where thatā€™s been immortalized.)
In hindsight, I can recognize a whole bunch of comparatively minor crushes were probably more based on aesthetic attraction because they didnā€™t actually come with the same type of ā€˜butterfliesā€™ and daydreaming about hypothetical futures. The crushes that were more substantial and had to be accommodated were more likely on friends, and it faired better to just wait out the feelings with no disclosure. I can think of at least one occasion where I was semi-aware that my crush was aesthetically based and I didnā€™t actually want to date him, but that awareness didnā€™t come along until undergrad. The last situation I definitely call a crush was in Sophomore year of undergrad and involved a friend, who in the past year found out about it and wasnā€™t upset or anything. (Shout out to friendship that can survive accidentally revealing that time I had a crush on her because she follows my tumblr.)
The Lightning Incident (as I so creatively refer to it) was this random, out of the blue event in my (I believe) Senior year of undergrad where my brain just kinda blanked, I felt internally giddy, and I just forgot how to speak while a cute girl I didnā€™t know was talking to me. Like, I just mentally shut down a bit and wandered away from the salad bar in a daze. For sheer experience on my end, Iā€™m including it here, but Iā€™ve still never been sure if it was a crush because my brain forgetting how to talk is incredibly counterproductive to interaction (and hasnā€™t happened before). I felt incredibly nervous talking to her during future conversations, but it didnā€™t quite feel the same as what Iā€™ve experienced as a crush before. (Iā€™m also 99% sure she never picked up on any of my internal weird feeling experiences and hasnā€™t found out since then, so yay me for keeping a lid on that.)
Love is a Four-Letter Word
Originally, I had something about hearing the line attributed to this section from a cartoon villain and the presentation of an inability to love in some form as a shortcut to villain coding planned, but then, in the midst of ā€˜pre-headache brain staticā€™, I remembered a line from a post, ā€œM is for the lack of madness | Called love that others seeā€ (ā€˜Aromanticā€™ acrostic poem). For a certain amount of aros, itā€™s probably just a relatable line, and they donā€™t necessarily give it much thought. I still havenā€™t been able to figure out how I feel about equating love to madness. On the one hand, thereā€™s somewhat of a literary tradition, so itā€™s not exactly a new idea:
ā€œLove is merely a madness and, I tell you, deserves as well a dark house and a whip as madmen do, and the reason why they are not so punished and cured is that the lunacy is so ordinary that the whippers are in love, tooā€ (As You Like It, Act 3 scene 2, No Fear Shakespeare link).
On the other hand, I have complicated feelings around the idea because of my own mental health issues. But if a crush ended a friendship that was important to me in high school, and it was tied up with depression, doesnā€™t that make it sorta relatable? Maybe for someone else, but I wind up thinking about the ashamed teen who couldnā€™t explain what was wrong in such a way to be believed and get help because it was ā€˜just an unrequited crush I would outgrow quicklyā€™, and the isolation of not being able to talk to anyone about a same-gender crush that didnā€™t help the depression. I may not have had to face homosexuality being listed as a paraphilia, sexual orientation disturbance, or other listing in the DSM, but that didnā€™t necessarily mean it was a supportive atmosphere to reach out to ā€˜trustedā€™ adults.
I donā€™t have the energy to poke at other relevant details around my mental health right now, but thereā€™s a certain knee jerk reaction to feel uncomfortable with the implication that an element of a romantic, sexual, or otherwise specified orientation may get people called crazy. I know aros are usually trying to joke about alloromantics (punching up, as it were), and no one wants to disclaimer their posts for every little thing. Itā€™s entirely possible Iā€™m overthinking this, and itā€™s bumping up against other baggage (around gender therapy and not being ā€˜too mentally ill to be believedā€™, for example), but I would rather not have ā€˜love is madnessā€™ be a thing that people try to fold into permanent aro infrastructure. (The use of ā€˜loveā€™ to mean ā€˜romantic loveā€™ might also cast too wide a net and people who use ā€˜loveā€™ non-romantically might think theyā€™re being included.) If someone wants to call me ā€˜madā€™, Iā€™ve got brain shenanigans and symptoms to use as justification instead.
ā€œnot gay as in happy, but queer as in i love youā€
Thereā€™s something about the first half of this post [link] that seems suited for spoken word poetry, and I donā€™t know how to translate my feelings into a written reply or commentary. However, I want to end with this because it scratches a hopepunk itch, and since Iā€™m wrapping up this post on New Yearā€™s Eve 2019, I feel like I could use a little hope for 2020. Maybe love is a messy concept thatā€™s broad and narrow, felt by everyone and felt by no one (depending on each definition), and carries only as much meaning as you give it. Maybe love has no inherent feeling thatā€™s universal, and itā€™s all down to action and inaction, like radical kindness. (I donā€™t know.)

Dear writer,
Hello and thank you for writing for me. Iā€™m very excited to read whatever you come up with.
I do give more or more detailed prompts for some of these canons than for others ā€“ thatā€™s not because I want some more than others, but only because for some I get lots of ideas, for others Iā€™m more ā€œwaves arms all over the place give me more of XYZ I love in canon!!ā€ I hope whatever I put down sparks your creativity, and feel free to reach out through the mods if you have any questions! My likes and DNWs are all the way on the bottom of the letter.
Without further adoā€¦

Adult Wednesday Addams
Wednesday Addams
Genres: Action/adventure, Canon-style plot, Humor, Slice of life, Worldbuilding
I belatedly discovered this webseries, and it resurrected (see what I did there?) my love for Wednesday and how the Addams Family canon runs on the endless possibilities of this loving, happily eccentric family being 100% true to themselves and the world just having to deal with it. The show was everything I never knew I wanted till I watched it, the perfect blend of Addams-macabre and cozy slice of life with bonus Wednesday navigating the world alone, without always knowing her family will back her up, and it made me crave more of adult Wednesdayā€™s mini adventures in LA. For this canon, Iā€™m good with gen or, if you want to write that, more of Wednesdayā€™s adventures in dating guys who really arenā€™t up to the challenge, and you can absolutely have Wednesday interact with OCs I havenā€™t listed as part of a pairing. Iā€™m keeping the prompts pretty short, just to (hopefully) pique your creativity, as I expect I will love any way you make these or any similar scenarios play out:
-Wednesday goes to IKEA
-More of Wednesdayā€™s interactions with the nice interns at her receptionist job. Maybe they invite her out to happy hour, or to the beach or a club. Or maybe we get to eavesdrop while they shoot the breeze on their lunch break, possibly over barbecue-chicken pizza from CPK.
-More of Wednesdayā€™s gigs. She already babysits and walks other peopleā€™s dogs, what else might she do for extra cash that would be both really common and seemingly ill-suited to Wednesday, except she totally makes it work for her? Cat sitting (especially if the cat belongs to someone incredibly rich whose house is full of secrets ā€“ and expensive things for the cat to knock over), driving an Uber/Lyft, becoming an AirBnB host, catering/server, working the late shift in a New Age/occult supply store where none of the woo is realā€¦?
-Or, alternately, Wednesday finds a career that is perfect for her, in which she can have success and respect. What ever could that be and still fit into the non-Addams world?
-Wednesday tries speed dating
-Or, she runs into Brian a.k.a. chains guy (I cackle with glee every time I rewatch the bit when he tries to kiss her at the pet store) a third time ā€“ how does it not go quite as he wanted or expected this time?
-Wednesdayā€™s family comes out to sunny, plastic, image-conscious LA to visit her and make sure sheā€™s doing alright. She gives them a tour of the city, and LA will never be the same again.
-Wednesday takes an evening class, or goes back to school part time, or enrolls in an online degree program
-Wednesday takes a road trip, alone or with her apartment mates/colleagues/Brian/strangers she met for carpooling purposes. Bonus points if you work in real roadside attractions, or tourist traps, or famous sites/landscapes.
-Itā€™s Dia de Muertos, and Wednesday goes out to celebrate and soak up the atmosphere. It may or may not live up to her expectations.
-If you wanted to get a bit meta and/or enjoy playing around with different formatting, what does Wednesdayā€™s Tumblr/Twitter/Facebook/Tindr look like? Or, Wednesday gets tasked with updating company social media at her receptionist job, and she does it with her own special flair.
American Gods (TV)
Laura Moon/Mad Sweeney
Genres: Action/adventure, AU - canon divergence, Canon-style plot, Character development, Getting together, Smut, Worldbuilding
Let me preface this by saying how much I appreciate that you are willing to write for an ongoing canon! I love this pairing, and while most of my prompts are basically the same ones Iā€™ve used in exchanges before S2 (which I am watching) started airing, let me assure you that I am 1000% fine with your fic getting jossed, or including a divergence from what we already know or how things happen in canon. You can work with the canon -- or as much of it as we have by the time youā€™re done writing -- or diverge in a way that works for your story. Really truly honestly itā€™s all fine since you are writing for an active canon, and I really truly honestly appreciate you wanting to tackle this! Canon divergences and canon-flavored-if-not-entirely-compliant stories are my jam, so please donā€™t feel anxious as the canon keeps unfolding, nor pressed to keep up with S2 if you canā€™t or donā€™t want to watch it right now. (I tried to keep S2 spoilers to a minimum in my prompts, but there are some spoilers.)
So *clears throat*
I ship it. Yes I do. They had me at ā€œgimme-my-coin-dead-wifeā€-flicks-him-into-wall. The snarky road trip was the best thing I never knew I wanted until it happened, and I adored every second of it. Theyā€™re both such assholes and so fascinating, even if they start to mellow toward each other a bit toward the end of S1, and all the gods/magic/resurrection stuff swirling around them begs to be explored further. Also I love love love how their dynamic is about equal parts spikiness, pathos, and humor (theyā€™re funny! and the canon doesnā€™t shy away from putting them in ludicrous situations), and it weaves seamlessly between those three. Plus sheā€™s half his size yet can and does beat him up with literally one finger, and then thereā€™s the angst of he having killed her, feeling really guilty about it, and then bringing her back.
Please give me either missing scenes from the road trip (if you can work in a divergence, thatā€™s great - for example, I like Salim, but if you want to have him boot Sweeney and Laura to the curb and go off on his own, or Sweeney to boost his taxi before Salim catches them, or whatever else to have those two alone, go for it!), or a S1 divergence (instead of going to Ostara, they go where? to see whom? about getting Laura resurrected) or something about these two post-S1/during-S2:
-Laura discovers (how? you decide!) that Sweeney gave her back the coin after their accident ā€“ whatever happens next, some punching may be involved.
-Wednesdayā€™s big war finally comes, and ā€œdonā€™t you dare die on me, you assholeā€ is a line either Sweeney or Laura (or both) might say to each other.
-Laura asked ā€œWhat does Wednesday have to lose?ā€ and the answer isā€¦? (Yes, give me that sweet poetic justice. One possibility, though not remotely the only one, but as of S2E3 Laura is technically a god-killer...)
-On a similar note, Wednesday told that luckless cop that Sweeney had been against the big godsā€™ war from the start, and while Wednesday lies, Sweeney definitely seems to be participating out of a sense of obligation and lingering guilt over the war he ran from long ago, rather than lust for a good fight or even a dominant death wish. What if he decided to hell with Grimnir and his war and his having Sweeney kill random people? Iā€™m guessing Sweeney too drank three glasses of mead so he canā€™t back out without dire consequence - but he does have a fierce, dead woman in his corner.
-They go to some as-yet-unnamed old god (feel free to bring in whatever mythology you want) in order to bring Laura back to life. Between Sweeneyā€™s mouth and temper, and Lauraā€™s mouth and temper, it doesnā€™t go well. Now one or both of them are in big magical trouble with a pissed-off deity and have to get themselves/each other out of it.
-Things happen and Laura finds herself in the position to throw Sweeney under the bus but also help/save him, and while he knows itā€™s only karma, he can still be pissed about it - how do they navigate this?
-Laura gets fully alive again, but traces of her (un)dead state remain ā€“ what are they, how does she cope, what price did she/he/they have to pay for her resurrection, and how does their relationship change? Iā€™d especially be curious how it would work if theyā€™re already a sorta-maybe-item and *then* sheā€™s alive again and itā€™s weird in a new way.
-For reasons Iā€™ll leave up to you, Sweeney and Laura have to stay put in a single place for a while and end up essentially cohabiting, regardless of what their relationship is at that point. Take ā€œcohabitingā€ as literally or as creatively as you want -- in any case, Iā€™m sure it will be marvelously disastrous and amazing.
-Slight or major AU from the opening of ā€œThe Ways of the Deadā€: Laura has hitchhiked with Sweeney instead of going off in a huff with Wednesday, or she otherwise gets to New Orleans sooner, and she and Sweeney tear up the town together. Gimme bar fights, carnival shenanigans, backstage craziness with the Christian rock band (Sweeney seems to have a backstage pass on a lanyard around his neck when Laura finds him)ā€¦ Maybe they even cross the paths of some loa and it doesnā€™t get all angsty (for what itā€™s worth, I think the reason the sex magic didnā€™t bring Laura back to life was because she couldnā€™t accept the truth(s) revealed during the astral-plain sex ā€“ see how she defaults straight to ā€œthis is all Wednesdayā€™s evil planā€ the morning after ā€“ not because the loa fucked them over as Sweeney said). They were actually getting along nicely in those first couple of scenes, only ribbing each other a little while still being their grouchy selves, before they got to Le Coq Noir. I wouldnā€™t have minded seeing some more of that.
-All the old gods hide their true appearance to an extent. A situation arises in which Laura sees Sweeneyā€™s true, or at least old, self (Iā€™m thinking of his surprise!poignant monologue about when he used to be a king, and the glimpse of him in full Celtic warrior mode in the S2 teaser). Or Wednesdayā€™s war ends in victory, meaning the old gods again get belief, worship, and sacrifices. How does Laura, the ultimate skeptic even when sheā€™s on the other side of the mirror, react? How does this new knowledge and new reality change her opinion of/attitude to Sweeney? Or to flip that around, if Sweeney were again relevant and believed-in, would that actually change his bad attitude and fix his issues (my guess is it would be complicated)?
-The power of names: for all his ā€œdead wifeing,ā€ there comes a time when Sweeney (has to) call her by her actual name, and thatā€™s a tricky moment for them to navigate. Or, Mad Sweeney is almost certainly not his actual name, since true names have great magical power and so must be kept secret; Laura discovers or learns his name, from someone else or from himself; what does she do with that knowledge? Or, Sweeney gets to say ā€œcuntā€ in a situation (sexual or otherwise) where, not only does Laura not peel his lips from his gums, but she finds that she canā€™t object, even though she knows that he knows that heā€™s getting away with it.
-So far in canon, itā€™s pretty clear that Sweeney has a lot of complicated but sincere feelings for Laura. But Laura is still pretty focused on Shadow (or rather her idealized vision of Shadow and what their relationship might yet be), whom she seems to equate with her own lost-maybe-to-be-regained life, although sheā€™s starting to soften toward Sweeney as she realizes heā€™s doing things for her that are not all about getting his coin back (and her sparring match with Wednesday in ā€œMuninnā€ may finally force her to accept that her relationship with Shadow died alongside her and Robbie on that road in Indiana). Tell me the story of how Laura stumbles her way to starting to feel more complex, maybe kinder or softer, really annoying for her blunt-force-trauma-personality things about Sweeney and about the notion that her dynamic with him is different from the way she tended to use men for her convenience without really letting them in in the past. Also Iā€™m pretty sure that even if they felt the same ā€“ or sorta in the same ballpark ā€“ about each other, their relationship would still run on a lot of conflict, and I would so be here for it.
-On that note: in ā€œMunninā€ it also becomes clear that Laura has, without realizing it herself, started to rely on Sweeney. The ā€œI trusted youā€ line made me think, whoa sheā€™s too mad to catch herself doing it but this is huge for Laura, and the fact that she goes off with Wednesday (!) basically because sheā€™s mad at Sweeney because she thinks heā€™s prioritizing his debt to Wednesday over herā€¦ Yeah, I would like to see that explored some more and/or to see Laura and Sweeney get to a point where they trust each other and rely on each other, and know it and accept it, however difficult the getting there and being there may be for them.
-And since Iā€™m on the subject of Laura, you know how sheā€™s not actually an abrasive bitch all the time to everyone? And when she is, the people on the receiving end of it sometimes richly deserve it, and anyway itā€™s refreshing to see a female character who doesnā€™t bother flirting and accommodating others for the sake of social harmony? As much as I enjoy watching her rip into people (ahem, Sweeney), I also love it when she acts differently, like her genuine interest in getting to know Salim and her joy in seeing him again in S2, or her running passive-aggressive battle of wills with Wednesday, or even her general disaffection and numbness in ā€œGit Gone.ā€ Her beginning to feel sympathy for Sweeney and her anger and disappointment when she feels let down by him are a part of that, and Iā€™d love to see all that explored more. Nuance! Give me all the nuance and seeming contradictions in both Laura and Sweeneyā€™s characters!
-My perfect AG spinoff would basically be Sweeney and Laura tooling around America, looking to get her resurrected (whether they succeed or not is up to you), stealing ever more ridiculous vehicles, arguing/fighting and having those pesky moments where vulnerability and genuineness creep in ā€“ and fucking. So yessiree Iā€™d be down for porn, including ā€œitā€™s technically necrophilia/zombiesexā€ porn.
-All the petty, ridiculous ways in which Sweeneyā€™s bad luck manifests itself make me laugh (canā€™t help it, wonā€™t even try), and Iā€™m down for more variations on that theme.
-If you wanted to throw in some worldbuilding, maybe something exploring living death. Magical bargains. What kind of favor did Sweeney do for Ostara that would be worth her bringing someone back to life as repayment? What other powers might Sweeney have (he doesnā€™t seem on a par with someone like Wednesday and Ostara, nor is he really a god, more a mythological being/kinda-deified former-mortal)? How long can a dead wife keep going before sheā€™s ā€œsoupā€? What other superhuman abilities might dead!Laura have? Can the dead do magic? What even are the rules governing and the limits of different beingsā€™ magical abilities?
If it helps your inspiration, you can find some of my meta and lots of tag-burbling about these two here. I have read the book though I remember it only in bits and pieces, and while I prefer the show characters and the fact that they get thrown together, you can use or riff on book material if you want. With reference to one of my DNWs, for this canon, describing Lauraā€™s physical decay is totally fine. Also, Shadow/Laura donā€™t interest me except as a part of Lauraā€™s backstory (so if your story wants to include Laura figuring out or having already figured out that pinning all her hopes on Shadow to make everything right is unrealistic, unfair, and not how it works ā€“ by all means, go for it!), and Shadow/Sweeney interest me not at all.
My one canon-specific, really strong DNW for this pairing is this: Iā€™m not into Laura being Essieā€™s reincarnation/descendant or ā€“ as fanon suggests and canon hints she may be ā€“ some sort of reincarnation of Sweeneyā€™s wife from back when he was a king in old Ireland. Reincarnation/ā€œnew love looks like old loveā€/ā€œlost love found againā€ plots bore me, and I donā€™t enjoy ships that hinge on characters being somehow destined to be together. Characters having agency is my jam as much as canon divergences are. Or if your fic really needs to go there, please please please donā€™t dwell on the Laura-Essie-Sweeneyā€™s-wife-of-old thing, a brief mention would be more than enough. Iā€™m certain Laura would have neither time nor patience for the notion that Destiny Fate and All That Jazz threw her together with ginger minge, and even if it were technically true, sheā€™d still want this relationship to work on her terms ā€“ and Sweeney obviously has a problem with Lauraā€™s cheating, her relationship with Shadow, her personality (though he also recognizes theyā€™re alike in many ways), and all that maps onto his anger and sadness over becoming irrelevant over time, so itā€™s not just about Laura. So yeah, let them be their own (grumpy, spiky, dysfunctional) people, and let Lauraā€™s dynamic with Sweeney not be shaped solely by his past and his issues.
Cabin Pressure
Carolyn Knapp-Shappey & Arthur Shappey & Martin Crieff & Douglas Richardson
Genres: Action/adventure, Canon-style plot, Humor, Slice of life
I just want more canon-y stories with their loopy humor and their weird yet loving family dynamics among the crew. Shenanigans in mid-flight or in the tedium which precedes and the tiredness which follows them. Someone smuggles (knowingly or not) an exotic animal on-board, legal, security, medical and/or slapstick chaos ensues. A mechanical, passenger- or smuggled-goods-caused problem arises and is solved during a journey. More games played on board GERTI. Playing around with a specific destination, like in many episodes, would be a plus. If it helps inspire you, my favorite episodes in terms of tone and content are: Douz, Gdansk, Johannesburg, Limerick, Ottery St. Mary, Uskerty, and Xinzhou.
For this canon, I prefer gen with maybe, if you want to go there, some Douglas/Carolyn on the side. Thatā€™s a ship I always thought had potential ā€“ they understand each other very well and trust each other... some of the time, but theyā€™re both also snark-masters, tend to look down on anyone not as smart or quick-witted as they (Arthur being the sole ā€“ occasional ā€“ exception), and are really good about keeping their defenses up against other people. But I requested the gen group, and I definitely want the gen group ā€“ please donā€™t feel pressed to write the ship, thatā€™s just a wild suggestion I threw out there.
Moonlighting (TV)
David Addison/Maddie Hayes
Genres: Action/adventure, AU - canon divergence, Canon-style plot, Established relationship, Getting together, Humor, Mystery/procedural, Slice of life
I osmosed tons about this show over the years but didnā€™t get around to watching it myself till recently. And then I loved it much more than I thought I would! Yeah, sure, some of itā€™s dated, and some of itā€™s ropey in terms of how the characters interact ( all the casual sexism and battle of the sexes stuff are very 80s indeed), but the chemistry! the banter! the funny! the shiptease! Gimme!
I tried to come up with lots of prompts, but ended up with a list of stuff I love about the show ā€“ and would love to see in fic ā€“ with some prompts mixed in. Hope it helps! Basically, give me as much of the showā€™s ā€œflavorā€ as you can, and Iā€™ll be happy.
My two DNW requests for this canon would be: please ignore everything that happens post-S3 (so if you want to write Maddie/David in the aftermath of their resolving their UST, please go ahead with the canon divergence of your dreams, I bet itā€™ll be a million times better than canon), and please donā€™t have secondary characters (Agnes and Herbert, or Maddie and Davidā€™s relatives and exes) hijack the story. They can be in it, but I really do want a David/Maddie story, despite the canon sometimes sidelining them due to behind-the-scenes shenanigans.
Prompts/likes:
-all the banter, wordplay, innuendo, puns, comic repetition
-arguments ā€“ those long, explosive, funny, overlapping, always hilarious fights they have
-breaking the fourth wall ā€“ yes, please. In canon, they often seem to know theyā€™re fictional characters but ones that exist in the real world, with studio lots and such. Do they now know theyā€™re characters in a fanfic of fictional characters that also exist in the real world, or something even more mind-screwy?
-David calling Maddie ā€œblondie blondā€ ā€“ it just makes me laugh ā€“ and Maddie calling him ā€œAddisonā€ when angry but ā€œDavidā€ when worried or when shit hits the fan
-random cultural nods ā€“ off the top of my head, canon referenced Spanish poetry, objectivism, American realist drama, Dr. Seuss, Shakespeare, of course all the Hollywood tropes and genres; go high or low culture, go famous or obscure, even if I donā€™t know the reference, I want it! Ditto if you decide on a plot that parodies and pays homage to a cultural landmark story (The Silence of the Lambs? Much Ado about Nothing? A Hitchcock movie? Something else?), Iā€™d love it!
-speaking of: I love the pun-tastic episode titles referencing everything under the sun
-all the canon-era detail which both takes me back and jars me with how much things have changed: people smoking in public buildings, seeing someone off at the boarding gate, dial and push-button telephones, VHS rentals, no cellphones/internet, all the 80s fashion and permed hairā€¦ Throw it in just for kicks or weave it into the plot (e.g., theyā€™re following someone and only have a paper map and their own faulty sense of direction to help them)
-casefic ā€“ I love the silly plots (and chases! All the chases!), which often combine really gruesome outcomes or real violence with slapstick. Iā€™d be especially tickled if you wrote a plot that starts out silly and seemingly innocent (e.g., they get ā€œhiredā€ by a kid who lost their homework) but ends up deadly serious, or vice versa
-I also love the flashes of really dark humor, usually provided by David snarking about plot developments, though my favorite example remains the intro to S3E1, with David assuring his sick mother that theyā€™ll sweep the Emmys, and then they lost big time and we see a title card saying that the mom died on Emmy night. What can I say but: ROFL
-Maddie and David are really pretty terrible detectives, but they always manage to solve the mystery ā€“ or a solution falls into their laps ā€“ and Iā€™m here for it
-Blue Moon almost never seems to take on actual paying clients ā€“ what else might David and Maddie do for much-needed cash? Bodyguards, extras on a movie, professional consultants on a movie (probably a really shlocky, C-grade production being filmed in the middle of nowhere), dance marathon, talent contestā€¦
-all the shippiness before the UST becomes RST ā€“ in canon they slow-danced in a bar, they slept side by side on a plane, heā€™s snuck into her house multiple times when he was in trouble, etc. etc. etc. The skyā€™s the limit!
-maybe they get together in a different way than in canon and/or they have a relationship that departs from canon? Or how about if they resolve the UST as they do in canon, but then find a way to be both partners and lovers, without getting so wrapped up in what they each think the other one should be that they spoil everything? Basically, could they be mature enough to have a relationship that works for them both, or be friends with benefits, or hell even break up but remain each otherā€™s most important person (and maybe still have sex occasionally)?
-tropes ā€“ the canon plays with so many tropes, you could too! Some suggestions: thereā€™s only one bed, undercover as lovers/married/client and bodyguard, waking up married, any variation on Lady and the Tramp you can think of (including David having to pretend heā€™s a class act while Maddie has to play the slob, for a case or because of a situation with their families orā€¦), they get zapped by a mad scientist theyā€™re surveilling and swap bodies, etc.
-road trip! Oh the possibilities...
-playing Twenty Questions or another game during a boring stakeout, and personal revelations come spilling out
-Maddieā€™s experience as a model proves key to cracking a case, whether you want to make the whole story a riff on the world of fashion (The Devil Wears Prada parody, anyone?) or use that as a surprise plot point
-they get tangled up (again) in international espionage and go on a globe-trotting adventure, either chasing a MacGuffin or being chased ā€“ basically, get them out of Los Angeles and their relative comfort zone, and send them Indiana Jones-ing all over the world
-the show often makes 80s-typical mean jokes about Russia and the Cold War ā€“ what if a case took Maddie and David to the Soviet Union in its last years? Give me all the culture clashes, David being obnoxious and Maddie trying to be diplomatic, all the vodka, chases down frozen streets and over the frozen Neva River, dodging the KGB, sneaking around behind the scenes at the Bolshoi or Kirov Ballet and winding up on stageā€¦
-when they visit a ā€œroughā€ dive bar in S1, thereā€™s a whole scene of David teasing Maddie to show tough-girl attitude, and she quips that she canā€™t wait till he has to accompany her to a high-society event. Um, yes please!
-they attempt to date like a regular couple, and stuff keeps getting in the way ā€“ whether they go to the opera/ballet and a fancy restaurant, or a basketball game and out for beers, or they try a quiet dinner and a movie at home (or all of the above!), canon-like complications keep interrupting. But then again, the ridiculous way they work is what brought them together in the first place. Bonus points if the fish-out-of-water partner ends up getting into the other oneā€™s date-activity of choice, while snarking all the way.
-David has been to Maddieā€™s house multiple times ā€“ including to sleep over, both platonically and not ā€“ and theyā€™ve both crashed at the office, but what little we see of Davidā€™s place, it seems to be a bachelor pad/hovel with a large yet mysteriously unfurnished living room. Maddie visits David/comes to spend the night/hides out with him from villains, and shenanigans ensue.
-canon often resolves the clash between Davidā€™s opportunism, happy-go-luckiness, and cockiness, and Maddieā€™s gentle idealism, worrywartness, and romanticism, by having David ā€œwin.ā€ That can be funny, but what if the plot gave Maddie the right a bit more?
-Iā€™m honestly not that into smut for this pairing - a fade to black, something implied, something referenced, innuendo, maybe brief flashes (heh) of what the characters think about/imagine/remember work much better with the canonā€™s overall tone, I think.
Likes:
I love pre-canon, canon, post-canon, canon-divergent, and missing-scene stories. I love character-driven and plot-driven stories equally, and I love fics which mix humor and angst/serious business when appropriate for the canon.
I love stories about characters at work and play, group dynamics, family dynamics (including constructed families), professional partnerships, friendships, alliances, rivalries, intimate couples (new lovers/first times as well as long-term/established couples), UST-ridden couples who are not just UST-ridden but connected in other ways too, etc.
I love irony, snark, humor as well as angst arising from the characters rather than the plot crowbaring it in, linear, non-linear, and 5+1 stories, hopeful endings, happy endings, bittersweet endings, worldbuilding, spiky characters who keep their jagged edges and spikiness in adversity as well as when their lives are going well, square-peg-in-round-hole characters, characters who are their own worst enemies as well as those who can get over themselves when the occasion calls for it, characters with conflicting values which may or may not be reconciled/resolved, characters who treat each other with respect and as equals even if they hate/annoy/canā€™t stand/love to dislike each other.
I especially love workplace stories (this can mean anything from an actual workplace/casefic/procedural setting to anything that revolves around the canon world in which the characters live) in which the characters are competent and dedicated to the job, and while they may not be exactly friends and they may well irritate one another, they still manage to rub along to get the job done and maybe even grow to care about one another (much to their surprise and sometimes reluctance/discomfort). Or, if they canā€™t get along, show me why not and whatā€™s preventing them from finding common ground.
In terms of ship dynamics, I love (where it fits the characters) banter, competitiveness or antagonism shading into attraction (this tension need not be resolved), oh-god-why-did-it-have-to-be-you-what-did-I-do-to-deserve-this, bickering yet loving couples, faithfulness, characters who are serious about their romantic interests, characters who think they are much better at flirtation than they actually are, characters forced to work together only to prove much more compatible than they initially assumed, fics which mix an exploration of charactersā€™ professional and everyday lives with shipping. A dynamic I cannot resist is shipping a couple who are incompatible in some important way (they are ideological enemies, cop and criminal, spies from opposite sides, one betrayed the other or they betrayed each other), and while they love and want each other theyā€™re also not willing to change sides or surrender/compromise their identity for the otherā€™s benefit, and how they might (or not) make their relationship work anyway.
I donā€™t have any very specific likes for smut, other than smut fitting the characters ā€“ show me how their canon dynamics spill over into the bedroom (or other place of congress). I also like sexual scenarios that subvert expectations a little and surprise the characters themselves (e.g., the person whoā€™s usually quiet or more passive taking charge, the more aggressive person goes with it possibly snarking or commenting on it as long as they can). And I like sexual scenarios that contain an element of competition, antagonism, oh-god-this-is-a-bad-idea-but-weā€™re-going-for-it-hammer-and-tongs, not wanting to admit feelings or show vulnerability except oops it happens anyway, whether the characters acknowledge it or not, or just people getting way more into it or being more affected by it than they thought they would. When it fits the characters and their canon dynamic, you also canā€™t go wrong with we-both-wanted-this-for-forever-and-now-we-both-know-it-so-here-we-go-diving-in-headfirst. For het and/or slash, oral, vaginal, anal incl. pegging, manual (ifyouknowwhatImean) ā€“ itā€™s all good. You can go as veiled or as explicit as you like, but please avoid excessive medical jargon ā€“ I donā€™t find a lot of mention of ā€œpenisā€ or ā€œclitā€ sexy.
