#but they both encompass roughly the same idea of more than one 'self' in some form

also i think people's opinions on what they're comfortable being called or would prefer being called can differ from what they find as acceptable as an umbrella term to describe the experience itself, so saying "would you be comfortable if someone called you specifically a certain label" is MUCH different than "would you be comfortable if someone labeled the experience that you also have as a certain label"
for some, the answers would be the same. for others, they might understand why the umbrella term(s) might differ from their comfort term(s)
#altho again: i really don't care either way personally.#they're all synonyms with slightly different connotations and implications depending on who's using them#also what you consider 'valid' will definitely skew how you feel about umbrella terms and such#if you think endogenic plural systems aren't really multiple/plural/systems/whatever? then you might not want to use the same terms they do#or might prefer umbrella terms that you see as excluding them#if a person uses plural to try and force personhood onto parts that aren't people? that's fucked up#if a person uses system to try and enforce a 'different disordered parts' idea onto headmates that are unique people? that's also fucked up#...idk where i'm going with this. i'm just experiencing feelings.#to me system has a slightly more medical and psychological tone to it#whereas plural is slightly more metaphysical and spiritual#but they both encompass roughly the same idea of more than one 'self' in some form#it's like arguing over whether “beautiful” or “gorgeous” is better. they're synonyms!!#some people might not like one or the other but they're basically the same thing they're practically the same word#why do we caaaaare#why are we lowkey going back to cdd = system and endogenic = plural againnnnn

PART ELEVEN
You learned quickly that when Ezra told you he was going to try, he tried. The very next day, he asked you to take him down to the lobby. You’d attempted to protest, but a facet of his personality you were getting more acquainted with over time was the man’s stubbornness.
“Mama always told me I was more stubborn than a mule stuck in a mud puddle,” he’d rambled to you once.
On this day, he said, “You know there’s no other way for me to do this except to get it done, Dove.”
You moved to stand in front of him. You crossed your arms, head tilted to one side as you surveyed him before you. He looked determined, jaw working rhythmically. His hands hung loosely at his sides, but you noticed how he was clenching and unclenching his fists restlessly.
“Ezra“, I don’t expect you to just waltz out of the apartment and seize the city like a lump of aurelac,” you reasoned. “I want to do this on your terms, and I don’t want you to feel in any way pressured. I feel like you think I’m expecting you to do this.”
“Dove, you know that as decisive as I may be, one thing I am not is easily swayed or pressured. Trust that I feel no such thing from you, as it is my choice alone to foray out of this nest.”
So, you had accompanied him cautiously onto the elevator, carefully watching and gauging his reactions to being confined within the claustrophobic reaches of the metal box you found yourselves encased in, ferrying you downward. Ezra’s tongue darted out to wet his lip nervously, you noticed his foot tapping against the carpet. You wondered if he noticed he was doing it.
When the elevator reached its destination with a faint ping, you steeled yourself. You were ready for his impending meltdown, his shaking uncertainty, possibly his refusal to walk any further. Your eyes widened as you watched him stride determinedly out into the lobby. You trailed close behind, ready to reel him back in if he became overwhelmed. You thought that he’d pause a moment, reacquaint himself with the lobby itself before venturing further, but he strode bullishly toward where Brice was standing near the front doorway.
“If you’ll excuse me, my good man,” Ezra muttered through the grim set of his mouth. He did not pause, he did not hesitate. He gave Brice no opportunity to hold the door open for him. He grasped the handle himself and thrust himself out onto a bustling street.
You were right behind him, your brows drawn with concern. You reached out to grasp his hand.
“Ezra?”
His shoulders squared, he turned to face you. He was breathing heavily, his eyes moving in disjointed stutters as if he was trying to download and process everything at once to a file in his brain.
“Ezra, take a deep breath.”
His eyes finally settled on you, dark pools of intensity. He did as you asked. His shoulders dropped to their natural position. Your other hand joined your first, clasping his large hands in yours. People continued past you on their way to their lovers and jobs and homes and they parted like a sea around the both of you as his gaze held you, hypnotic and deep. His hands pulled from your grasp and he crushed himself to you, his mouth finding yours in a dizzying kiss. Breathless, desperate, the rest of the world disappeared.
“I did it, sweet love,” he whispered against your mouth. You did not heed the noise and push of the city thrumming around you, the entire street ceased and froze as if the universe was swallowing its own stars and they reappeared, rebirthed and glittering, in the encompassing weight of Ezra’s eyes upon you.
“All manner of things in this world are limitless and surmountable, survivable, when I have you by my side.”
******
One week later you found yourself in a dive bar that ended up being approximately twenty minutes from your loft. You had worked incrementally each day, walking with Ezra as he ventured further and then a bit further. You saw his confidence begin to return. You had sat one morning at a small table on the sidewalk of a cafe, reading Keats to one another as you sipped cappuccino. Ezra made sly remarks about the goings-on of passing strangers, weaving threads of supposition according to what he thought of what they wore, how quickly they were walking, who they were with. His eyes were lively. He reminded you of the person he’d been at his table in his tent on the Green: head thrown back, joyous.
You were finally knowing him like this.
And so, you sat in the crowded bar, smelling the cologne and sweat and smoke enveloping you and those around you. You had felt nervous entering, a sudden impulse to look for the nearest exit slammed into you. A patron sidled past you, bumping your shoulder. You jumped, your heart hammering. You tried desperately to quell what seemed to be an oncoming panic attack- there were too many people, it was so, so loud and anyone could just reach out and grab you, slam you into-
“Dovie.”
Your frenzied reverie was interrupted by Ezra’s warm hand on the small of your back as he guided you to a table in a corner. His breath tickled the hair that curled around your ear as he spoke close and low.
“Sit here, see? Your back will be against the wall. You can see everyone this way. You are safe with me, sweet one.”
With his voice close, grounding you, you took deep unsteady breaths until you felt your heart rate begin to slow. You reassured him as the bartender approached you. You decided that alcohol may not be a bad idea, for either of you, in helping you relax. You ordered a gin and tonic with lime, Ezra requested an extra dirty vodka martini. While you waited for your drinks you took in the humid press of bodies gyrating on a makeshift dance floor, you absorbed the loose, languid movements of the inebriated patrons before you. Could you do such a thing, would you ever be capable of such abandon again in a place like this?
Your drinks were set in front of you. Ezra reached for his and took a long sip, his eyes closing with a soft groan.
“I cannot begin to tell you how long it’s been since I’ve imbibed such high-brow spirits in what amounts to a dusty hovel.”
You sipped your own drink, the burn sliding down your throat blooming into warmth when it hit your belly. Your brain quickly began to feel fuzzy, your limbs loose and warm. It had been stands since you’d had anything stronger than wine. You set your glass down and turned to see Ezra staring at you, his own cheeks pinking from the effects of his drink. He leaned his head to the side, one hand reaching for your bare knee, at the same time the sudden crack of a pool cue across the room made you jump, an arm shooting out in unconscious self-defense as your hand connected with your glass. Ezra’s own hand reflexively moved to catch the glass before it could topple and shatter, but not before the contents sloshed over the edge to soak down the front of your new dress.
“Kevva-damned. Shit….This is the first time I’ve even worn this!”
Ezra was unperturbed, smiling gently as he squeezed your knee.
“I’m sure it will come out in the wash, love, I’ll leave you only briefly to procure you proper cleaning implements. Do not trouble yourself.”
You sighed, nodding gratefully. You watched as Ezra stood up and made his way to the bar. It was crowded indeed tonight, and you noted that there were quite a few people in line ahead of him. You sighed again, looking down at your front. You wrinkled your nose; you smelled like a distillery.
Klutz.
Lost in your thoughts, it took you a moment in your blunted state to notice that another drink was slid in front of you as the chair beside you scraped back from the table. A man sat down next to you, grinning crookedly. He leaned forward before speaking.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you in here before. Sorry about the drink, I thought maybe you could use a replacement.”
His hair was flame-colored, unnaturally so. His nose, eyebrows and ears were heavily pierced, and his arms were covered in tattoos. In another lifetime, perhaps, you may have welcomed his advances. Tonight, however, you glanced around frantically for Ezra. You felt suddenly exposed, like a lame rabbit trapped in a dog pen.
“I…..I’m not alone, you know. I’m here with someone. So, no thank you. On the drink.”
The man’s brows shot up in surprise. “Oh! I didn’t mean….sorry. I saw you spill your drink, and then I saw your friend get up...I was getting my own drink, I figured you could use another one as well.”
You swallowed down your panic, your hand twitching in your lap.
If only I had a thrower.
“You were watching me?”
“Relax. I was just trying to be nice!”
“What did you put in this drink, anyway? Sedative? Some kind of amatory agent?”
“I don’t know what you-”
The man choked on the rest of his words as he was yanked out of the chair roughly by the back of his shirt. He was slammed up against the wall, Ezra’s fingers wrapped around the man’s throat.
“I do believe the lady would like to be left alone,” he hissed darkly, jaw clenched. His head was lowered, eyes blackened pools of rage. His voice wavered on a razor-thin edge of control. The interloping man’s eyes were wide, it appeared that he was gasping for breath as Ezra’s knuckles turned white. You noticed the knife in Ezra’s hand. You had the far away realization that he must have been keeping it in his boot, the same way he had on the Green.
He had carried it all this time.
Ezra brought the tip of his knife to a slot of pulsing skin between his fingertips. The blade pressed in, a bead of blood pricking forth as the man gasped. A dark spot spread on the front of the man’s pants.
“Do you know how quickly a man bleeds out if cut in just the right way? I do, I know from experience. Do you also know how to make things last, how to prolong one’s mortal agony until they plead for the sweet embrace of oblivion? I know that too.”
You were monsters, you realized with a sudden, shocking clarity. You were not fit for civilization. Ezra was a hair's-breadth from murdering a stranger in a public place while you watched impassively. This is who you have become. This is what the moon had done to you.
Without thinking, you jumped up from the table. Your hand grasped Ezra’s shoulder.
“EZRA.” your voice was clear, sobered, authoritative. “Stop. Come back.”
Ezra almost shook his head as he looked at his hand, holding the knife as if it belonged to someone else. He let the man go, and the man slid down the wall to crumple onto the ground.
You realized it was silent- everyone in the bar was staring.
You grabbed onto his hand in a vise-like grip and moved to the door.
“We’re leaving. NOW.”
There was a sea of shocked silence that parted around you. You did not hesitate, you did not stop to take in the widened eyes, the slack jaws. You walked until you were both out in the cool air of the warm night.
You kept your eyes forward with a tight grip on Ezra’s hand.
Get away, you repeated in your mind like a mantra. Get away, get away, get away…
You squeaked out a wordless exclamation when Ezra halted, pulling you backward into a narrow side alley. He spun you to face the cool brick wall, caging you with his hands and hips. He pressed up against you insistently, panting as if he’d been sprinting.
“Ez-” your words were cut off as his lips crushed onto yours, rough and messy. His hands grasped at the hem of your dress, raking it up around your waist. He ripped your underwear down past the curve of your ass with trembling fingers. You gasped when his fingers entered you, rough and sudden.
“Ezra, we’re in an alley, someone could walk byyyy…” your last words dissolved in a whine as he angled his fingers, expertly curled, and hit that spot inside- the place he knew you needed him most.
Hot plosives of air against your ear, you felt fully enveloped by Ezra and completely exposed to everything else. He withdrew his fingers suddenly and frantically went to unfasten his pants.
“I need you,” he rasped, his voice desperate and shuddering. “I need to come back to myself. Remind myself. Please. I need to know you are mine. Show me.”
You felt the blunt head of him notched at your entrance. Grasping his cock in his fist, he spread your leaking arousal to mix with the precum dripping from his own slit before sliding into you with a single thrust. His hips met yours as you brought your fist to your mouth, biting down to keep from screaming. Ezra withdrew almost completely, still trembling, and slammed back into you. Your breasts were mashed against the rough wall, you had to use both hands to brace yourself against the onslaught of his thrusts. One of his hands went up to your mouth and covered it firmly; his other hand reached between your legs to circle your clit roughly.
He fucked up into you with abandon, without regard for his surroundings and despite the possibility of being caught. He kept his voice low, gasping and whining as his punishing rhythm had you quickly hurtling toward your own release.
“Mine….mine,” he groaned into your ear, slapping sounds from your desperate union echoing in the air of the alleyway. “Going to fuck you like this in every corner of Central, on every surface. Claim this pussy over and over again. Take you apart.”
His words against your sweat-slicked skin, his hot breath, his fingers on your clit, his brutal thrusts all melded into the sin of him taking your like this, claiming you in the open. You release slammed into you, unexpected, overwhelming. You bit the inside of his hand, breaths harsh, ragged, keening. You sobbed wordlessly against him as he stilled, spilling into you as he cried out. The intensity and strength of his orgasm had rendered him incapable of remaining quiet. Your legs shook, Ezra’s arms wrapping firmly around your waist to keep you from collapsing to the dirty concrete.
When your hammering heart had finally slowed and your breathing finally evened out, Ezra reverently helped you back to some semblance of presentability before you made your way back to your apartment, still shaky and somewhat lightheaded.
Once back in the safety of your shared home you sighed deeply before wrapping your arms around Ezra’s waist. You knew you both had quite a bit more to work through than you’d originally thought, but Kevva knew there was no one else for you. You gazed up at him with a small, sad smile.
“We can’t go back to that bar, Ezra.”
“I know, Dove.”

=> Aboard the Starbase Frontier.
infiniteproxy You'd die before admitting to the loathsome existential dread that has you by the throat, as your waiting has whittled down to weeks, then days-- now mere hours, poised and awaiting word to set everything into motion.
You wonder if Vriska truly comprehends the extent of all that you stand to give up-- if anyone who has never been helmed ever could. To allow yourself to be pulled from the rig, from your systems, from half of your self; to diminish yourself by choice, confined to a crippled body, to pitiful senses and nothing but silence beyond the churning chaos of your own thoughts for the foreseeable future...
You have to keep your sights on what lay further beyond, and excise the rest. Fear was unacceptable, and you will not hesitate.
You have done all that you possibly can to prepare, including the gradual strategic abandonment of one of the cargo bays, which now lay in wait devoid of personnel. All that remains is to trigger a station-wide lockdown and hope that the quarantine protocols hold long enough to allow Vriska time to move unimpeded. Beyond that...
One way or another, your life as you currently know it will end this night.
amicicidalgambler And so will yours.
You've been suiting up for your mission in the same meticulous way that you start every evening. You carved out every angle of your face with makeup even though half of it was going to be hidden under a mask, you perfectly plaited your hair that was going to stay tucked underneath your clothes, you fussed over your clothes even though you had a leather jacket and boots and pads to carefully layer over it all.
And as you do, you wonder if Goldwave has any idea about what you're keeping behind the curtain. Once this was over you wanted to let him in on everything, but you had no idea what he suspected. Could he tell that you were in love? See the kind of purpose you were following? You doubted it. Nobody looks at someone like you and thinks you're happy, after all.
But either way, you wanted this terrible cantankerous bastard in your life, and, well. Rescuing a helmsman you saw as family was a real test for what you've been learning, wasn't it?
Nadaya had provided you with all the weapons you needed. A few good guns, more knives than even you knew what to do with. That and a single-use transportalizer (with a spare) was all you would need. You kissed him before you put your mask on, spent a minute with him before you steeled your nerves. Then you sent a message to Goldwave, the last one for now, saying to ready for your arrival. One zap to that empty cargo bay, and you'd be there.
Time to raise hell.
infiniteproxy The message, when it comes, is a shock to your system; while not dispelling the fear, it galvanizes you. This was the point of no return.
Over the course of the past week, you'd ever so carefully manipulated the schedules of in- and outbound vessels. You wanted this swarming hive of a starbase to be as empty as it would ever get, and now the moment you'd both been preparing for with nerves on a knife's edge had come.
You initiate quarantine protocol, and transmit the coordinates for cargo bay 4.
infiniteProxy: lockdown is in place. you may proceed.
amicicidalgambler There is no pause as you appear in the bay and security feeds of the Starbase Frontier. You already know where the door is, and your mind is already shuffling to the first step of your plan like a stacked deck of cards, so you simply begin a confident stride towards the nearest hall.
First things first, you need your backup. Two low-grade psions, working conveniently close to your point of entry, sticking out like a sore thumb in the herd of scurrying midbloods you could see in your mind's eye. You see them, and you seize them. Every thought they were having halts, and their nerves freeze and scream at them to run, fucking RUN to your location. They'd be here in a moment.
Second, you need your intel. With a single flex against his mind, roughly equivalent to a polite knock, you worm into Goldwave's pan just as forcefully. His pan is nothing like the other two, with all the buzzing energy of stellar class psionics and a riled mind and also the entire goddamn base, but you can handle it. You can handle it fine. You just- need a single expected second, to breathe and settle as a weight behind his eyes.
And after that second, there'd be a thought louder than all his others flashing into his mind: Status? You needed him to focus on what's happening on his own so you can see.
infiniteproxy You have your eyes on the prize the moment they arrive-- though, strictly speaking, you were the prize. But your cameras and attention are trained most immediately on the cargo bay and the corridors just beyond.
The intrusion is disorienting, momentarily distracting you from your surveillance. More than that, it's a jolt of not-quite-familiarity that Vriska will likely notice, which you also push away. The sensation is achingly similar, but the touch of their mind feels quite different-- something you're thankful for.
You need to focus for both your sakes, now.
Swiftly, you dismiss as many irrelevant readouts as you can, concentrate on what's useful: the layout of the starbase's interior, with the path to the helm highlighted, crew stations and movements, camera feeds.
i will keep the ranking officers at bay for as long as possible, but it will not hold forever. they will be attempting to discern the cause for the lockdown. this is your opportunity. make good use of it.
amicicidalgambler ...There was a real thrill in having all that at your fingertips, but you couldn't linger on it.
Instead, you run out into the corridor just as your controlled help arrives. Their powers were an extension of yours now, and your guns flew out from your arms and into theirs. You unstrapped the last one with one arm, and started tossing out Magic 8 Balls from your sylladex with the other. They floated into the air, all being crushed at once in a little psionic flare and exploding into a cloud of knives.
The Starbase Frontier was somewhat wheel shaped, and you were on the outermost ring. The nearest spoke of halls would lead you right to where you needed to be- but every other spoke would lead your enemies to the same thing. The cloud parted with a single push, and swirled around you and your pawns. You would run down the spoke closest to this cargo bay, while you would flank yourself with the other two trolls.
You only had one question worth asking as you started running into the maw: What about the auxiliary helms?
infiniteproxy Oh, you're going to miss being able to multitask like this... Keeping a close eye on Vriska and their newly-conscripted "assistants" (ah, what a show!), while continuing to maintain awareness of the rest of the station and thwart the attempts of those on the bridge to override the lockdown.
The 3D overlay lights up the path and entrance to the lower helmsblock, which, though mechanically connected, does not share an easily accessible entryway with your own. Either could be sealed independently, in case of damage or sabotage, as they now have been with lockdown in place. You're already working on bypassing the security protocols.
You also bring up their statistics-- power rating, neural imprint, vitals, etc.
amicicidalgambler Multitasking is almost your thing too. Almost.
You grab the minds of the auxiliary helms in a move that makes you violently flinch and shudder. If one helmsman is loud, then three is deafening, nothing but a full chorus of buzzing power boiling under your skin. They seize too, as you force them to halt every process that can be halted, until you can steer them towards literally anything else.
Because you can't let it stop you from your other current issue. A starbase on its emptiest night is still a starbase with people. There's stationed security and a few scuttling stragglers from the lockdown in the corridors, and they all need to be out of your goddamn way.
So you and your backup greet each one with a volley of psionic knives. To the neck, the eyes, the hands, gaps in armor, it doesn't matter- they all dance around each victim and stab any available piece of meat until they're a corpse riddled with bleeding holes. But through the feeds, it would be obvious that you weren't using your senses to guide any of it. You were entirely in your head, relying on the network of mind's eyes to plan every move.
infiniteproxy Your awareness of the other two suddenly splits in the strangest way-- you feel them withdraw from all but the most vital core systems, while at the same time experiencing a sort of vague, formless echo of them through Vriska. They're as nothing next to you-- not nearly so powerful, minds far more complacent, far more broken to their work. But altogether, the sensation of all three and everything you encompass at once must be distinctly overwhelming.
And even so... It's a sight to behold, the way Vriska storms onward like a whirling dervish, slicing, stabbing, cutting down anyone who stood in their way. Yet so detached, every action driven by something far more internal than psi alone. It's fascinating. You're grinning-- or perhaps you're snarling, teeth bared in savage glee even as you attempt to stymie the commander's demands for answers.
"Helmsman! Report."
"Status uncertain. Recommend full system scan."
"Then get on with it. If this is another one of your little games, I'll have you dismantled, do you hear me?"
"I assure you, Commander..."
A commotion-- a burst of static, a frantic voice over personal communicator, an aborted scream--
INTRUDER ALERT. INTRUDER ALERT.
"...this is no game."
Ah, well. Now things would get interesting.
security is en route to the habitation ring. be ready.
amicicidalgambler I can see them.
Or their pans, anyways. Between the glittering of their minds in physical space and the layout in Goldwave's head, it seemed like there'd definitely be some company by time you crossed this last stretch of hallway to the next ring. By time your pawns caught up from the adjacent wings, it'd be a straight up party. Fabulous.
Between now and then you'd almost have everything handled. The trolls you'd caught off guard were easy to pick off and butcher, you had plans for how to handle more of a skirmish. But there was one more thing that needed your attention.
A thought would enter the headspace of the auxiliary helms, loudly. Your primary helmsman is about to get his freedom, you said. I can't give you the same, but I can help you. What do you want?
And it would beat in their heads until you got an answer.
infiniteproxy Both would jerk against the wires at that sudden, insistent demand-- the voice that was not a voice, the thought that was not their own, the will of the one who held them in compulsion and yet-- offering help?
A clamor of disjointed feelings and impulses; fear, confusion, rejection. Hope, pleading, anger.
One cringes away, seeking refuge in the programming-- fearing the punishment sure to follow if they spoke out of line.
From the other, a spark not quite snuffed out, flaring to life-- they'd had friends, quads, a life, all torn away.
The idea of freedom beyond death in the rig feels impossible, yet neither do they wish for it. What kindness could this intruder even have the power to offer them?
But a thought resonates between them; fearful, resentful, yet in this both of one mind, for sweeps of callous treatment and grueling use. They'd helmed the base in tandem for a long while before the third had been brought in, pushed to their limits in the interim between one primary and another, with not a bare word of appreciation, only endless demands.
... make them pay ...
amicicidalgambler There was a laugh as you stabbed the last troll in your path to the habitation ring.
This place is going to be a fucking corpse pile when I'm done with it.
And that was an understatement. The bodies you were leaving now were just the start, the plans you had for the rest of this place were... far more elaborate. Messy. Fun.
But there has to be survivors.
It was a stipulation Goldwave himself gave you. Someone had to be alive to spread the word of the Starbase Frontier. This stupid fucking Empire had to know that a helmsman arranged his own escape and had the crew of his prison slaughtered. Here, this was his triumph to have, his mark to make on the universe. You were just hired help. Very enthusiastic, completely pro-bono hired help.
Your knives and gun were already poised at your next target, and you opened the door to the next sector.
Would you like this place to yourselves?
infiniteproxy Emotions shift to wonder-guilt-vindication-excitement-regret. It's thrilling (it's terrifying). They want to see those preening highbloods get what's coming to them (they don't want innocents to get hurt).
Survivors, though...
Is it relieving? Yes-no-maybe-sort of. Ripples of uncertainty. What would come next? What would happen to them in the aftermath? (What difference would it make, if nothing ever changed?)
Then a flash of personnel files drawn up, ones you hadn't bothered with-- the low-caste crewmen, the ones tasked with menial jobs, the ones caught in the spokes of the wheel just as they were.
Some, perhaps, soon to be or already dead. There wasn't much room for compromise. But even so...
... show them who deserved to die ...
amicicidalgambler This base didn't have much lowblood crew in the first place. The personnel files you had gotten from Goldwave made that explicitly clear. For some godforsaken reason, this place was fucking crawling with trolls around your hue instead. Teals, ceruleans, blues, all with rather middle of the road qualifications and clean records. It was a fucking trash heap of bureaucratic losers. In the flood of cool-toned pans, anyone with a controllable blood color was practically neon bright to you.
Which also meant it was very easy for you to tell that none of them had gotten roped into this welcome party. Before the door was even fully open, you hurdled through, firing your knives and letting loose a wild spray of bullets. You... weren't the best shot. You were 100% trying to compensate with an automatic rifle. Whatever.
Trolls hit the floor and you sprint for the next hall, your knives flying from corpses to the closest round of new targets. Until you reach the door, at least, at which point they fly back to slip through behind you and form another cloud. That's when your backup lands, blasting through anyone else in much the same way. They'd make their way to the door, and keep anyone from coming in behind you.
Next stop: Your brother.
infiniteproxy The two of them fade into the background, mentally vibrating with tension, able to do nothing but watch-- and wait.
Could one troll alone -- mindcontrolled lackeys aside -- actually bring this station down? Starbase Frontier was far from a prestigious posting, but neither was it some slipshod affair... But it seemed anything could be possible, with a little help from the inside.
Help that watches, too, with bated breath, attention trained on the spray of bullets, on Vriska's forward progress and every fallen body.
spectacular.
There are guards stationed outside the entrance to the primary helmsblock, of course. They'd been there before the lockdown, and they'd be damned if they left their posts for anything. The commander, of course, is convinced of your involvement by now-- But have any of them truly realized what Vriska's goal is?
If they did, they'd be massing right there to hold off a potential breach, but -- though there are many rushing to try to intercept -- it doesn't seem as though they've put the pieces together just yet. All the better. You want to relish this.
amicicidalgambler The guards come under fire as soon as you can make the shot, and you laugh as the sound echoes down the hall. This was all too precise for you to let yourself get all orange-eyed and crazy, but the adrenaline was still getting you to loosen up.
That and the sheer anticipation. You were nowhere near finished, but you moments from seeing Goldwave face to face. Just one more door, a few more steps, a little more time...
These fuckers need a little special attention first, though. Once they fall, you float your rifle up above you, and settle a knife into each hand to replace it. The corpses were lifted to meet you, and you dug the blade deep into their stomachs, carving through the flesh. Their own hands are puppeteered with psionics to plunge into the wounds, pulling out their own entrails before they're left to be a mess on the floor.
As you waltz into the helmsblock, a blood-spattered assassin and a glittering cloud of weapons, you make them paint out eye symbols and a few random ominous words with their blood. You order your help to come into the hall after you, to try and guard this entire side of the helmsblock. But it's all background noise to you. You're so happy to see him.
infiniteproxy You're practically incandescent with vicious delight. No one would be able to hear the ragged cackle of your echoed laugh, behind the helmsblock's soundproofed walls, with your feed to the bridge cut off, but surely Vriska must feel it.
You're straining against the wires, what little you can. You'd be damn near holding your breath if you could. It's practically artful, gory and glorious, blood and viscera strewn about your corridors like a consecration. You almost wish there were more to watch, but the door to the helmsblock has finally, finally slid open.
Anticipation was a heady and terrible drug, indeed.
All these perigees, all this planning, and now the moment you'd hardly allowed yourself to believe in until it had come-- to meet face to face, or as close as could be, with half your face obscured from where you loom above. But you watch their entrance in high definition, from half a dozen angles, and your grin is sharp as knives.
You've seen better days, to be sure. You may be a yellow pushing the half-century mark, but you're less worn with age than rough use. But those rebels were accustomed to rehabilitating helmsmen forcibly ripped from their rigs. Assuming you survived the next few minutes, your recovery, little as you want to spare much thought for the process, would at least be in better hands than you could ever face here.
"Welcome," you rasp, and the weight of everything unsaid within that single word hangs like thunderheads in the air between you, charged with potential. But anything more would have to wait, and for now you spare your wreck of a voice.
once i disconnect, i will not be able to assist in any meaningful way. you are prepared for your next move?
amicicidalgambler The only reason his emotions weren't being dulled down by everything else going on in your head was that they paired so well with yours. The droning buzz of psionic power, the last moments of connection anyone would have to the beating heart of the Starbase Frontier, your rush from the action matched by his rush of near-freedom.
You couldn't take your mask off, you needed your face obscured in here more than anywhere else, but you'd painted the front with a set of gold fangs. Between those and your eyes, you match him perfectly.
I'm prepared, you tell him, and you can't hesitate for a second.
The cloud of weapons float to the ceiling, protectively circling the rig, and you take your final knife off your person. It's a big unwieldy thing, not made for fighting, but that's not what it was for. With somewhere between the delicate touch you'd treat his actual ransacked self with and the firm grip of someone who spent a wrigglerhood with sea-ship rigging, you hoist yourself up by the biowire and find a secure spot to hang behind him. Then, finally, finally, you take the blade to wire and start to carve Goldwave out of his prison.
Meanwhile, you were still ordering your pawns to fend off goons as they came. Meanwhile, you still had to hold control over the auxiliary helms while they waited for everything to unfold. Meanwhile, you were tracking the glittering pans of all the lowblood crew and assessing the best moment to seize them.
But phase 1 of your plan was almost done. Goldwave was about to be free.
infiniteproxy You've never been one who cared anything for being understood. Your kismesis had been the only one to ever strip away all those layers of obfuscation and posturing, to dig down deep and lay bare the truth of you and laugh as she did. You'd loathed her for it even as you'd surrendered to it, and vowed to never allow anyone to know you as surely as she did.
All your dulled edges were of your own doing, but this rang true between you. What Vriska understood, they had no need to take; you were already of the same mind. It came naturally, without effort, without any need to explain, because it was obvious.
It was, upon reflection, a strangely gratifying feeling.
But there was no more time for ruminating on such things.
And no need to tell them to proceed-- they're already in motion, and you're prodding at systems you're not even supposed to have access to, directing the metal sheathing that shields parts of your rig to retract and leave the bare, fleshy wires exposed. Exposed to their knife, that flashes and cuts. It doesn't hurt, exactly, but that almost might have been preferable-- it's still a part of yourself that's slowly being sawed and severed, separating troll from machine with your mind still bridging the two until the very last moment. The sensation is disorienting, sickening, fleshy cables slowly parting one by one and with each your link to the whole of Starbase Frontier grows increasingly more patchy and dim.
Now is the time to make your temporary exit from the group chat in suitably dramatic fashion, before the connection is lost without your input. Now is the time for one last, private exchange, before closing that channel for good.
Your body shudders and writhes as your systems are assaulted by error messages of increasing urgency, of garbled data and sensory malfunctions, life support functions failing. It's almost too much to bear, now, being torn between-- you'll have to let go soon.
amicicidalgambler The whole time you could feel what he was going through, but just as an echo through your control. A little fraction of the agony. So you stay as calm as possible, for him. It was the best through-line you could give- the constant feel of your focused mind gripped around his as you cut through the biomass and all his senses overwhelmed him. Even with the loss of extremities you've been through, you knew you couldn't imagine what this is like for him.
It was very literally like holding someone's hand through a field amputation. A necessary comfort, sure, but at the end of the night it was something only he could come to terms with. He would have to let go.
And so would you, apparently.
Someone lunges, grabbing the few inches of braid above your jacket collar and yanking you down. Immediately, you flip your blade and hack wildly at the offending fingers, doing anything to regain your balance and get some distance before attacking any further. You didn't strictly need it when your arsenal was full of floating knives, but it's what your fighting instincts were screaming at you. Out of close range, out of arm's reach, NOW-
infiniteproxy It is a comfort, to their credit, however feeble it may have been against the experience of being cut loose. To no exaggeration, this is the worst thing you have ever experienced. Even the actual loss of limbs had been far less thoroughly agonizing-- and your left leg had been almost entirely severed without any surgical intervention whatsoever.
One arm, and then the other cut down, leaving you to slump against the wires still holding your twitching frame in place. The left, though bony and frail, was at least otherwise intact, but though the right hand still remained, it was paralyzed and useless, withered by atrophy and nerve damage.
Behind the headgear still awaiting removal, your eyes are wide and staring, blood dripping down your chin from where you've bitten your lips and tongue bloody. It's all you can do to keep from screaming, and it resounds silently in your head, an echo of the cacophony of every system gone haywire.
The sudden jolt, Vriska's alarm and immediate reflex, takes you completely by surprise; once the process had begun, there was no way you could keep your attention on the cameras, the crew, any of it, to anticipate the surprise assault. The disruption of that singleminded focus is all it takes to shatter yours-- sparks coursing up and down the wires as the measures to keep your power contained and properly siphoned fail.
amicicidalgambler The loss of control feels awful, but you have more pressing issues. Your assailant pulls you in by your hair, trying to grapple the rest of you, but you hit your mark that same moment. One strike and your knife digs into their hand, forcing their grip to falter. Another, and it goes clean through into their other arm.
Clean through your braid, that is. You shove your opponent and it falls to the floor, the remainder already unraveling as you scramble for space. Your eyes flush orange, and you give a growling screech as you finally see the motherfucker who dared attack you.
Before you stands the commander of the Starbase Frontier. His face is one you remember quite well from the files; he was the most punchable looking blueblood you'd ever seen, and his record only complimented his looks. Nothing but above average accomplishments in imperial groveling, leading to a dead-end job on the outer rim. He tsks at your state, seemingly unbothered by both you and the blood pouring out of him. The uninjured hand even goes to rest on a holstered pistol.
"I am placing you under imperial arrest," he says, "for tampering with the Starbase Frontier's primary helmsman, amongst several other charges. If you put down your weapon and surrender now, I will take you into custody, and we may still resolve this matter peacefully."
So you shoot him. To the bitch's credit, he's fast, zig-zagging the distance as you fire, but it gets a lot harder for him to dodge bullets when you snake your knives around him and try to block his every move. In return he goes for pot shots with his stupid standard-issue peashooter, and you have to keep on top of his injured aim. The two of you weave in front of Goldwave, him landing a few grazes and you riddling him with holes. He falters first, overwhelmed by the pain. You drive each and every one of your psionic knives into him, and then force them through the flesh, carving the commander to pieces as he screams to his death. His head you cleanly slice off and sylladex. The rest... you have plans for.
infiniteproxy It's an assault from every angle; blaring alarms, overlapping error messages, data streams disintegrating, pain-not-pain and noise within and without. Glitching camera readouts and audio feeds, giving a fractured picture of the struggle that goes on around you. The commander's insufferable posturing, Vriska's feral growl, and your own hoarse voice giving sound to that turmoil-- or is that only in your head, still? You can't tell anymore.
The lines between body and machine, ship and troll, were now not so much blurred as splintering into one another, your awareness spread far too thin one moment, then contracted awfully the next. Bullets whiz past, someone shouting over the staccato bursts of gunfire, and then-- a gruesome, gurgling scream.
One swift slice later, and the commander's headless body crumpling to the blood-slick floor is the last image you manage to capture on your cameras before everything goes dark, your link to the Starbase Frontier -- to everything you've been for the past three sweeps -- finally severed for good while you still had the presence of mind to make the choice yourself.
It's just you, now; a troll caught among the wires, nothing but this ruined flesh, the rising tide of your thoughts and the black hole within your chest. One cage for another.
amicicidalgambler One of your pawns is sent through the helmsblock to the other entrance, to cover the door that the commander had come through. You, meanwhile, wipe his blue blood off the knife you were using on the rig, and go to finish the job you started.
Goldwave's control over his psionics was slipping, but you could take care of the problem at the source. You knew how it was all supposed to be feel normally, so you could forcibly keep his powers at bay with yours. And then, for safety, you float over pieces of the commander's corpse and let the wires shock that bitch instead of you before you go back to hacking through biowire.
There's one more step you need, though. You take an 8 ball out of your sylladex and open it with a clean crack. It produces what could generously be called a knapsack, a hand-sewn thing with one big padded pocket and straps, and you lay it in front of the rig. With that in place, you carve away the last of the wires and, with a quick warning of the imminent manhandling, scoop Goldwave up gently and put him in the bag. There were a few extra straps to keep his atrophied arms in place, and then you'd both be ready for your escape.
The straps go around your shoulders, your gun lowers into your hands, and you lift yourself by your assistant's psionics into the air. There was no way to make this comfortable, but hovering would be a faster and smoother ride for getting the fuck out of here.
infiniteproxy It's a mercy, at least, that now you only feel the wires snapping as a strange, distant sort of twinge. Psi crackles along your skin, along the wires, like blood from an unstaunched wound, until Vriska's presence wrests it under control once more. So long, so long since you'd had any means of exercising it under your own power; that too would be something you'd have to relearn, in time.
You droop when the wires still tethering your headset to the upper column snap free-- then finally, even that is worked off and dropped aside, and you can open your eyes to your surroundings for the first time in perigees.
Making sense of the direct visual input, dazzled and dazed by light and the entire ordeal, is slow to come; sooner, you feel yourself pulled from the last, lingering embrace of biowire, dripping tendrils clinging to the stumps of your legs.
At least you're in no state to remark on the indignity of being stuffed into a bag and carried around like an object, or even a bit of added discomfort; you're really in an appalling amount of pain as it is, labored breath rasping in your throat. But you're not so far gone as to be numb to your imminent triumph, to the vicious satisfaction of seeing the commander strewn in slightly singed chunks across the floor.
There's a bit of a commotion at the far door, Vriska's borrowed help fending off a crewman attempting to force their way through. You pay them no mind, clearing your throat experimentally and making a game attempt at catching your breath. Your voice may be a wreck, but it's yours, and right now that counts for something.
"What... now?"
amicicidalgambler "Now," you answer, "We massacre the rest of these idiots, and get the fuck out of here."
And in the relative peace of the moment, now was your time to handle the lowblooded crew before that happened. You took a deep breath and wormed into all their minds at once, trying to hold yourself steady. The strain was- fine, it was fine, as far as body count this was nothing, but managing to let these fuckers ambush you was not a great sign for your focus. You could do better. You had to.
Each and every one of the sub-teal crewmates would stop dead in their tracks, seized by your puppet strings. They'd start calmly filing away to any little hidden niche you'd seen in the maps, their movements robotic and unnatural. It couldn't look like anyone was fleeing from their posts, it had to be even more undeniably mind control than anything else you were doing.
And you, with Goldwave over your shoulder, would fly. Just a little, a touch faster than you could run, onto the bridge and into the action. A bit of height gave you and your assistant a lot of cover, forcing anyone in the way to choose between two equally swift targets that were not only shooting them down, but shooting dozens of knives to follow up on the kill. Blue blood was being spattered at an alarming pace.
infiniteproxy At least the full weight of the station and all of its systems was gone, now. The other two were still there, firmly rooted in all the most essential functions, but it was a reprieve, at least, if a small one. And you were free. Very soon you would leave this place and never look back.
Yet how strange... That the Starbase Frontier would be a place now and nothing more. No part of yourself remained, nor wished to. It had never been you. But it had been yours, all the same... And this, in a way, was like looking out at your own corpse.
The bridge, when you reach it, is swarming with activity. Someone had managed to push through far enough into the helmsblock to catch a glimpse of the commander's dismembered body and report back; now his first officer is barking orders, attempting to call in reinforcements, to wrest unresponsive systems back into control, to figure out if there were any other invaders.
And in seconds, it all erupts.
Bullets, blades, and blood-- the tealblood's voice rising in disbelieving fury above it all as she ducks for cover. "Shoot them! Kill them both!"
But trolls fall all around her, consoles exploding in showers of sparks, coolant spraying from ruptured conduits. It would all be over soon.
amicicidalgambler All over soon, but not before you attended to that noisy little tealblood that was causing such a fuss. A fleet of knives go flying across the room and turn sharply around to pin her down in her hiding place. Either by blade placement or by sheer pain, she wouldn't be going anywhere. She'd be forced to stay and scream as every other troll in the room fell. Then, her head would be sliced off, and floated to the centermost console to drip all over the broken controls.
Your other assistant was bringing up the rear of your murder operation, covering the same ground as you from the helmsblocks to the bridge in the central spire. They, however, had a very important job. Their knives would dive hilt-first into the pools of blood that were now littering every other inch of the Starbase Frontier, and draw patterns in a flurry to cover all the blank space. Eyes connecting to condemnations connecting to mouths connecting to damn near every little ominous soundbyte you knew off the top of your head. Up the walls when you could, across the ceiling when you could, with no regard for direction.
The bridge you do yourself, with Goldwave by your side, so to speak. Fractal, spiraling patterns of one shade of blood leading to another, all painted simultaneously, leading to a longer phrase you'd memorized in his home dialect. It'd be scattered here and there all amongst everything else, but writing it out in big spattered letters right in front of the captain's station seemed like a suiting place.
Gelangweilt von der Ewige Wiederkunft des Gleichen, it read. Bored by the eternal return of the same.
The other half of the middle sectors was next. You laughed as you flew yourself to the next set of corridors.
infiniteproxy Shrieks of rage turn to screams of pain, to choking, gasping, as a dozen knives find purchase through flesh and hold her there amidst the slaughter to bear witness. One by one the remaining bridge crew fall, several turning to try and flee only to be cut down just the same, and then--
A body slumped to the floor, a severed head anointing the controls with her blood.
You watch, rapt, as once-pristine surfaces are defaced with a cool-hued rainbow in streaks and swirls and smears. A huge swatch right across the captain's console gradually coalesces into legible script, the harsh lines of a harsh tongue that still felt more comfortable than Common ever would.
And when you realize, though nearly silent, your laughter echoes their own as the two of you speed down the passageways of a station once bustling with life, now drenched in death.
amicicidalgambler It was a lot harder to miss when you were so close, and it made you damn near fucking glow with love. You could feel a ghost of every emotion that was present in your enemies- their rage, their fear, their grief, their panic- and it always paired so nicely with the adrenaline and sheer sadism that pumped through you while you watched trolls get eviscerated. But all the round warmth of carrying Goldwave through it made you feel practically fucking invincible.
The bulk of the remaining bodies they had to throw at you were arranged in the middle ring. There were still more officers onboard the ship, more lackeys barking orders to try and maintain the last semblance of order this ship would ever see, but with their commander and first officer gone there was only so much they could do. Only so much training they could rely on. Only so many ways they could even pretend to be the superior of the trolls they were sending out to try and stop you.
With one of your pawns at each side, you burst in with electric fanfare. They'd skitter about the ground, you'd flit above, and every motherfucker in your way would fall. You'd brought enough bullets to keep the suppressive spray almost endless, and with the dozens of flocks of knives you were dancing from target to target, the rest of your offense was just as unceasing. More and more try to flee as the dead pile up, their morale failing with their defenses, but you take any potshot you can to stop them. They could be crawling wrecks scraping themselves along the floor for all you care, as long as they die in the end.
And oh, how they die in the end. One by one they drop until there's nothing but dripping, mangled corpses spread across the halls, another landscape of useless bodies with spaces in between to paint with their blood. It would all have that same beautiful horrorshow transformation, and then-
Then you'd be on to the hivestretch.
infiniteproxy You have no skill whatsoever with reading the subtler emotions of others. You're not psychic; you're certainly no empath; and on the surface, they tend to confound you more than anything. What Vriska might be feeling in response to your unfettered delight (beyond the obvious in which you share) is entirely a mystery from your current perspective.
But you're riding a manic adrenaline high that you only hope might carry you until you're home free to suffer the crash, and the gateway to all your wildest dreams is opening right before your eyes with no more than a chasm of hellfire to bridge the expanse, and those little personal touches, well...
Gratitude doesn't come easily, to someone like you, to say nothing of fondness. But it's there all the same, that undercurrent of warmth and fierce pride.
...you might, also, be slightly feverish. Terrors knew your body chemistry was probably in a free-fall, what with being separated unceremoniously from the rig's imposed life support functions. But there are people whose job it is to deal with all that messy business. You just have to make it there in one piece, unlike these poor bastards whose doom has come early, leaving them strewn across the floor, piled against the walls, once-trolls reduced to so much offal.
Likely a few have managed to make it to the shuttles and escape, by now; likely a distress beacon has been sent out. You have no way of knowing for certain any longer, but neither does it matter. No one would be able to respond quickly enough to make a difference. They would only know that Starbase Frontier fell on this day-- and if they did not yet understand why, they would soon enough.
amicicidalgambler You were the one with a link to the ship now, and only indirectly. Through the eyes of the auxiliary helms, you were confirming those same suspicions: A few idiots had slipped out through the escape vessels, a couple others had sent out a general cry for help to the empire. Both of those wouldn't even be obstacles on your joyride out of here.
Only scraps of the crew remained, and few were even trying to hold their ground. They ran to any hiding place they knew of aboard the ship, anywhere that they could wait out your bloodlust- only to find that they were already occupied. Taken by other crew, the lowbloods you'd stashed, who would turn to stare at them with blank eyes and tell them that they did not belong here. That the intruders would only find them faster here. Which was true, even, seeing as those encounters could be followed like flares to hunt down your targets.
You knife down one, then another, then another...
The last crew member of the Starbase Frontier, a cerulean pencil-pusher, had been through your little routine three times now, and she was running out of options. You didn't have time to toy with her, but with the mental map you had, you could send yourself and your pawns down just the right hallways to quietly corner her at an intersection. She sees your pawn, turn and sees another, and then she sees you and screams.
She's a panicked mess within seconds, shaking and sobbing, and the two gunshots she takes to the legs don't help. Her whole body crumples under the pain, and she pleads, pleads for you to spare her, she didn't think there was anyone else, and you sink a blade into her arm. Stammering through the tears, barely comprehensible, she says she'll do anything, anything to keep her life, to stay alive even though everyone around her was dead- And you sink in another. Another below her ribs. A fourth in her stomach. You move them through her flesh like saws, up and down, tortuously slow, until the shrieking and crying finally stops. From your perspective, it's hard to tell if it's the damage that kills her, or the blood loss, or the sheer shock, but you don't even care. All that matters to you is that you have one last corpse to desecrate before you can leave.
You put a hand at the top of one of your bag's straps, not touching Goldwave at all, but miming it. "Anything you want for this one?"
infiniteproxy So much you can't see, now. So empty. So small. Blind. Deaf.
You're keeping it at bay for now, but later-- Well. Later would come later, if it came at all.
For now, there is only the thrill of the slaughter, that primal triumph, as chase is given to fleeing prey, those who attempt to hide flushed out into the open once more only to be mercilessly cut down. You only wish you could be taking part right alongside them, with psi blazing or knife in hand as they tear a whirlwind of death through the straggling survivors, but this... Ah, this is almost as good. A deadly performance, all for you.
It's almost a shame, when finally one alone is left. Some nobody in administration, whose only real fault was being assigned to the wrong base at the wrong time. To her credit, she's kept herself alive this long, scurrying from one corner to the next in a desperate bid to escape the inevitable. But now there would be no more running.
Poor thing. You could almost feel sorry for her, if you had ever really been capable of feeling any such thing. And her pleading was so very satisfying.
Something like a shrug, a slight tightening of your arms, is about all you can manage right now, but there are teeth behind your labored words.
"Flay her open... Stake her out to-- greet those who come to see."
amicicidalgambler "Can do."
The knives buried in the flesh of your victim dislodge themselves, and you orchestrate them all in a careful dissection. Lines are cut all over her body, panels of skin and muscle are carved and pulled back, all her organs are toyed with into a perfect desecration. With the blood, you surround her with a pattern of eyes, a set of feathered wings, and in big mocking letters, "Welcome to the Starbase Frontier!"
And just like that... it's over. Goldwave has been retrieved, every target has been killed, and you tick to the final step of your plan like clockwork. You drag yourself and your pawns to the nearest cargo bay, and sylladex your weapons in exchange for the last few things you needed. First, two bottles of unopened psionic strain medication, which are tossed to the trolls you've been controlling before you shoo them out of the room. Your control over them, and also everyone else alive on the ship, would release the moment you left the timeline, and they could either choose to accept your gesture or not.
Second, you had a single use transportalizer pad, which would explode upon your departure. It was actually the same kind that Karkat had used to take you to the base sweeps ago, an irony that you found completely obnoxious. But it was the only thing that could get you to... The quietest spot on Nadaya's ship, of course, where you let several Magic 8 Balls worth of weapons crash unceremoniously onto the floor, causing a small flood of knives and guns and ammo to clatter and bounce and generally go all over the fucking place. You were not about to have someone get on your ass for contraband after everything you've just been through.
The single-use junk couldn't have the correct permissions anyways. From here, you could you warp both of you to the spot Sparks always arrived at after his raids. If time was on your side, he'd have just hauled in his quota of rescued psionics minus exactly one, a helm in terrible disrepair that you currently had in your backpack. But it was all up to luck at this point, so the only way to find out was to press the button on the transportalizer and see.
centaurstechnician Ah home. The lovely scent of slightly different recycled air, cultured with mold spores and dandruff from different sources than Goldwave is used to. Subtle but distinct, the same way their specific laundry deturgent and cleaners soaked into every surface and clung to the clothes and skin of those who lived there.
Vriska and Goldwave weren't sppotted right off the bat, there was the usual chaos, psions rescued (the scent of blood was mostly from them) in a state of disrepair from their capture by the people Sparks had gone after today, there were nurses- and Equius, all out there doing triage and sorting people into who needed the most attention immediately and who was going to be a problem- none of these were volenteers into the program so they weren't expecting any issues with them.
Sparks and Salinx had already dissappeared to debrief and get a shower, leaving Equius 'Engineer' Zahhak to handle this chaos, as they did every time.
He was frowning, tapping his tablet, issuing orders, trying to figure out why their numbers weren't adding up with furrowed brows, Perhaps a typo, or they were mistaken? The intellegence was usually very good for these missions.
He wore a very dramatic mediculler's coat, sleeves stained with yellow red and brown where he'd already helped get the worst into stable condition and off to the bowels of the ship and its medical unit. - Not all of those were fresh, he had one specifically for the hell that were mission nights, that had already seen far too many stains.
infiniteproxy Ah... Now that was true artistry.
You grin, lick cracked lips, and breathe out, "Perfect." And now there's nothing but to leave it all behind, forever, a wreckage of blood and vengeance in your wake and those few seen fit to spare.
You're somewhat wary of the unfamiliar device Vriska reveals, but you're far more amenable to trusting technology than anyone who would rely on "magical" means to get around. They know what they're doing; you trust that much. And perhaps one night you might have the opportunity to get at the workings of these transportalizers...
A disorienting moment leaves you blinking around an unfamiliar corner of an unfamiliar ship, but the stop is brief enough to only allow Vriska to unload their cache before you're moving on once more, to emerge into a scene of chaotic activity that surges around you in a fairly overwhelming whirl. Light, voices, the heavy metallic scent of blood overlaying the rest. Ugh... You were going to have to get used to existing like this again.
amicicidalgambler The moment the two of you go unnoticed is just long enough for you to slip your backpack off your shoulders and hold Goldwave against your side with your robot arm- almost as if he was leaning against you for support and not a torso with arms in a bag. Then, you pull your mask off your face and make yourself noticed.
"Missing something?"
You were, quite frankly, a mess. A mess holding another mess. Nobody had landed a hit on you worse than a bad graze, but you were covered in blood and viscera specks in every shade of blue, your eyes were still blazing orange, your hair was chopped off at the shoulders, your nose was bleeding badly. The way you walk towards Equius has a distinctive sway to it, the way you hid the trembling that came with exhaustion that hadn't quite caught up to you yet.
And you had a face-splitting, wild grin. You always did, when you went to find him after one of your schemes.
centaurstechnician Equius looked up, ears perking at the sound a familiar and beloved voice- and he did a double take, briskly walking to meet them halfway. "Vriska, what in the name of the gods,," He whistled and gestured some nurses over to help, pausing a moment just to touch her cheek and wipe a stray streak of blood of of it with his thumb.
amicicidalgambler "I fucked with the numbers on the raid intel so I could pick up Goldwave," you admit, bluntly, leaning into your moirail's touch. And though you'd be happy to let the nurses take him for whatever it is they needed to do, the glance you gave them was full of protective instinct. Logically you knew this was their job, but emotionally, one wrong move and- That reminded you, though.
"I'm controlling his psi regulation right now. I don't know what that'll do on its own, so tell me when to let go."
infiniteproxy You're still in a bag, still so much dead weight, but at least like this you can almost pretend you just need a little help staying on your feet... Ha. You'll be needing a lot more than that, in the long run. But for now, the gesture is appreciated, though like this there's no hiding your own trembling, the appalling weakness that leaves it a struggle just to breathe.
For just a moment, you allow yourself to close your eyes against that weakness, teeth grit, before fixing your gaze on the Engineer as Vriska approaches.
You're quite a mess in your own right. Thanks to Vriska's deft positioning, you'd remained unscathed throughout the slaughter, though you're splattered with more than a small amount of teal and blue blood yourself. But you're scarred and gaunt, one horn a jagged break that never grew back properly, hair shorn short and jaw patchy. There's half-dried blood of your own streaking your chin and your eyes are like burning coals glaring out of ashen pits.
The nurses are spared a flat, distrustful stare, a hoarse cough bringing up fresher flecks of yellow.
"We could al-- always... fuck around and-- find out."
centaurstechnician "-I'd rather not." He said "May I touch you? I w001d like to do an examination, and get you into the medihall as quickly as possible. -Are you..?" He glanced at Vriska then her friend. "Goldwave, at a guess?" The big blue hazarded, a little uncertain.
"I see that you have both been full of mischief today- Are there any complications I need to know about? Vriska are you hail? Most of this blood looks like someone elses.." He frowned, examining her visually for a moment for anything deep. "If you are hiding a gut wound or anything I will be very put out with you"
infiniteproxy "If you must," is your grudging response, though you don't bother to hide the distasteful curl of your lip that accompanies it.
"Goldwave. Yes. You-- are the medical professional... are you not? ... You tell me."
Most of it would be self-evident: the usual array of old scars and ports still bearing traces of torn biowire, severe emaciation and atrophy, a body struggling to function on its own after a good few decades in the rig. A cursory examination would reveal the missing legs, long-since amputated just above the knee, the paralyzed right hand, though it may take a closer study in the medibay to determine badly-healed damage to vocal cords and trachea, compromised by scar tissue.
amicicidalgambler "He's had it pretty rough, but they only got scratches on me. Promise."
There was the psychic strain that would knock you clean on your ass the moment the huge rush from the violence stopped, but that one was a lot harder for you to judge in the moment. You honestly hadn't even registered the nosebleed yet.
"As far as I know there shouldn't be anything weird going on in there, but I have a bunch of the ship's files on my husktop if I'm wrong on that one."
centaurstechnician "You may stay with him if it will put you both at ease- " He crouched down and began careful physical examination- including breathing, examining skin elasticity, and pulse. "- we are taking you immediately and hooking you back up to life support before your body shuts down."
infiniteproxy "Wouldn't... want that-- would we?"
A dry, sneering cackle is broken by ragged wheezing, several moments passing before you can muster the strength or air to say anything more.
"... better... get on with it."
amicicidalgambler ...You were going to let him say if he wanted you to stay around or not, but the moment you hear that you can really only make one choice.
"I'm staying with him," you say, firmly.
centaurstechnician He gently reached out and took Goldwave and picked him up in the crook of an arm like he weighed nothing. "This way-" He gestured for an assistant to follow and hurried off to start the very many medical procedures Goldwave was going to need.
At least Goldwave didnt bite him.
infiniteproxy Ohhhh, you're thinking about it.
"Tell me-- do you.... treat all of your patients... as though-- they were... sacks of vegetables?"
centaurstechnician "When I must"
amicicidalgambler You trail behind closely, trying to find the best way to take off your jacket without splattering blood everywhere, and you hear that thought.
"No biting my moirail until you're stable."
centaurstechnician "I w001d appreciate that" He said mildly. "it makes it more difficolt to work when I've been injured. "
infiniteproxy You indulge yourself in a faint, irritable hiss instead.
centaurstechnician "You do not need to endure this for long" He promised him. turning down corridors and activating doors remotely ahead of them with his glasses to swing open. Goldwave was soon going to be laid gently down on a cot while they got him hooked up life support again, and scanners were fetched to get a more thorough understanding of what was going on inside him.
amicicidalgambler And you'd pull a chair to a spot close but out of the way, to watch, and support him until you absolutely had to go drag yourself elsewhere.
...You love both of these jackasses so much.

Introducing OVERSOUL: An Interview with Derrick Saladino
Last month, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Derrick Saladino to talk about his brand, OVERSOUL. When he pitched OVERSOUL to me in his initial email, he described it as “a lifestyle brand created from identity crisis,” and that “counterculture/subcultures like anime, gamer, emo-punk, euro-techno, and underground hiphop/b-boy culture heavily influence the brand’s creative direction.” I stared hard at the first two influences, and then stared not-as-hard at the rest of the influences, wondering how these various subcultures could overlap.
My brain being comprised of worms and dirt, I assumed that the anime and gamer influences meant that the designs were going to look like Bart Drinking Lean or Sasuke Wearing Supreme. (In other words, a caricature of anime-inspired Instagram ad streetwear.) This assumption changed quickly after taking a look at OVERSOUL’s site. Their first collection, ISEKAI, is comprised of three pieces. The logo tee and hoodie both look great, but the third piece was what really caught my attention: it’s a button-down tee adorned with daggers. At a glance, it looks nothing like anime- or gaming-inspired clothing. This was the point at which I snapped out of my irony-poisoned haze; the world of memeified, ironic-but-not-quite-ironic hentai tees and Goku Smoking Weed edits had calcified my expectations of what forms of inspiration a brand could and couldn’t pull.
It makes sense in the context of the rest of his influences and the ethos that he operates under – to get ahead of myself for a second, Derrick had this to say of his interest in various countercultures:
"When people express their passions or life to a certain degree, it just pulls me in. It’s like, ‘Okay, I don’t know what the fuck it is, but show me. Let me indulge.’ That’s really how I get into things."
In talking to Derrick, on and off the record, I saw a talented designer who was unapologetic about what he was interested in and passionate about. He’s also a huge geek that runs a bi-weekly Smash tournament at a local nightclub.
(This interview has been edited for length and clarity.)
"Okay, wait, first and foremost, my name is Derrick Saladino and I am a fucking gamer. Before being a designer or anything, I am a fucking gamer. "
Daniel: What is OVERSOUL?
Derrick: OVERSOUL is about identity crisis. It’s my experience dealing with that personally. Growing up, I never really fit in to particular popular groups. Every time I would attempt to make new friends, I would stumble upon the randomest shit: anime culture, gamer culture, I’d end up becoming friends with a lot of emo-punk kids, techno. Nothing that I fell into was mainstream, popular culture. It was a lot to do with being lonely and trying to make friends. With OVERSOUL, thinking about all that kind of shit, dealing with identity crisis – obviously there’s a lot of people who’ve been through that – I want to create a new identity or community of people who share similar values and, you know, take pride in it?
I mean, even the name, OVERSOUL, I ripped the word from this really old anime that I used to watch growing up, Shaman King.
Shaman King? What the hell, like 4Kids shit?
Yeah. That wasn’t the first anime that I ever watched, but it was something that I was really into. From being like 12 to even later in my high school, I just loved it. The concept was so cool – taking a soul and imbuing it in an object to make it powerful. It just looked fuckin’ sick. When people wear my clothes, I want them to feel empowered. That’s how I want people to see it. Soul being clothing, putting it on yourself, there you go.
Spirit Integration is, I don’t think the tagline to the brand, but it’s also part of it. Spirit Integration is mind, body, and spirit, and for anyone into the spiritual side of life, that’s what makes us. Our thoughts and mind and DNA – that makes us who we are.
When I read the description on your site, I noted that you referred to OVERSOUL as not just a startup streetwear thing or a brand, but a conceptual design experience. What does this encompass, and why did you pick this specific wording?
None of the stuff I make or have made in the past is very conventional. It’s been pretty avant-garde, I would say. I’ll have an idea, and regardless of whatever trend is going on right now, I just fucking do it. When I make clothes, I’m not making clothes for the public, really. My mentality is more like, “You know what would be sick in a game? If the costume looked like this.” That’s why I say it’s a conceptual design experience.
Has being involved in the industry and working behind the scenes affected how you understand your own brand after launching? What about how you understand customers and other brands, now that you know what the design process is like?
First-off, let me just back up and go over a history of what I did before OVERSOUL. In high school, I made clothing because I hated what everyone else was wearing. This was 2011-2013. During that time, that’s when I had a brand and brands like Obey, Diamond Supply, and The Hundreds – literally peak Tumblr hypebeast, Zumiez, starter pack shit – were around. I looked around at everyone else and was like, “I can’t click that, it’s not resonating with me.” I had two other brands after that, and then came OVERSOUL. So I have this history of kind of knowing the market, even being a consumer, and evolving as a businessman and designer. I don’t think anything has changed. I think I’ve always stayed true to doing my own shit, rather than trying to compete with everybody else. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll notice what other designers are doing and some things I’ll take note of or inspo from but I hardly think about other people, to be honest. I respect everyone’s hustle, I just can’t be doing the same shit.
Give me your top 3 video game fits.
Top 3, oh my god. Snake from Metal Gear Solid V – very techwear, utility as fuck. My previous brand before this was techwear, and I had to stop it because techwear is so hard to sell.
I’m really into draping fashion. Cloud, Final Fantasy VII, it was the movie Advent Children – you play Smash, right? There’s two costumes in there: the black, and like this, not really skirt, but it covers up somewhat? All-black, huge sash going on, it reminded me of Yohji Yamamoto.
Something that I’m going to make in the future is inspired by Naoto from Blazblue. His outfit, I looked at it and I was like, “Yo, this could be fucking, like Chrome Hearts, like what the fuck? I’m just gonna abuse this character design, it looks amazing.” I think that fashion right now, what really gets people’s attention on social media, is just some crazy shit, I don’t mean dumb shit, but like, just has to be very bold, and I think that’s what Naoto’s character design is. His pants have this huge cross on them. I think that’s one of the most crazy things I’ve seen in awhile.
Let’s talk about Anime-den! It’s this thing that we started roughly 5 months ago. One of my best friends here, he actually works at Fortune [Sound Club, a nightclub in Chinatown], and he’s a music producer. We really bonded over clothes, anime and gaming, and we had this idea – I think we were just high as fuck one day – and I’m like, “Yo, you know what would be fucking dope? If we brought weeb shit into the club.” I think he was just joking around, but he was like, “That would be really fun to set up, we can do it.”
[Weeb being short for weaboo, a pejorative term referring to those obsessed with Japanese culture to the point of fetishization and idolization. It’s been ‘reclaimed’ by some fans of anime, used ironically as a form of self-deprecation.]
So, the next day happens, we’re talking, and he asks me, “Do you actually wanna do it?”, taking it seriously. I’m astonished. I was fucking joking, you know? We were just some high guys. He pitches the idea to Fortune and they approve it. At this point, we’re like, “Okay, we gotta actually invest all our effort into this,” because we’re actually gonna do something that I personally haven’t seen anybody do before – bringing a game into a club, anime into the club.
It’s really cool. Just yesterday, the commentator from Vancouver Street Battle came to Anime-den. Pride? He commentated for Battle of BC 3 and Pinnacle. He has ties with Animebae, too. [Animebae is a local anime-inspired startup streetwear brand.] Who would’ve thought that this guy would come through? And he brought his friends. He was telling us that what we’re doing is sick, and hearing this from a guy of that calibre in the gaming or Smash community, it really shook us. We’re actually bringing in people who play the game seriously here.
How has setting it in a club made it different from other tournaments that you’ve been to? How does the dynamic change?
It’s a little different because when it comes to actual competitive events, people have a different mentality when they enter. They’re there to win and they practice hard for it. As for Anime-den, it’s the total opposite. It’s very casual, we’re all just drinking, blazing, whatever. It’s just the environment where, you know, dim light in a club, there’s music going on in the back –I guess to some gamers it can seem distracting? But I think people, they don’t care. They just play. They’re just there to have fun. Totally different dynamic from an actual event.
I think that the purpose of Anime-den is to bring people together. That’s literally what Anime-den is for.
Yeah, I just noted here that I think it’s consistent with your brand, in that you’re translating the intangibility of these digital spaces like anime and gaming that people bond over, and you’re putting it into a physical space and letting people actually further develop what these subcultures would look like in person. Like, when you think of anime or gaming in real life you think of Anime Expo or cosplaying or some shit – and that’s fine, people have fun with that [Editor’s note – I think it’s fun!] – but it’s not the only mode of expression. With events like this, I think it’s cool that you’re saying, “If you’re a gamer, there’s another avenue for you. You don’t have to dress up or anything…”
I mean, walking in today and meeting you, you wouldn’t have gotten the idea that I was super into anime or gaming. I just look like a regular dude, right? And my clothing gets inspired by it, but I don’t really look like I’m cut from the legit anime cloth. Choosing these lifestyles and putting it into this real aspect, I think it can appeal to everybody. People tend to judge a lot of things, but once you step into the Anime-den room, whatever perspective you have about anime to begin with, I’m pretty sure that changes. Man, the crowd, they look all the same as you do too. We’re all normal people, we just like cool shit.
I think we should talk about ISEKAI.
OVERSOUL’s first small collection was ISEKAI. Translated to English, it would be ‘a better world,’ and I named it that based off of the anime genre, isekai. When you watch these sort of things, it’s usually someone going to another world. For my first collection, I wanted to welcome people to my world. That’s why I chose ISEKAI. One of the big graphics for the brand was the blade shirt. [On the site, it’s name is the Beginners Dagger Shirt.] My reference for that was playing MMORPGs. Typically, the first weapon you get [in MMORPGs] is a short sword or dagger. I wanted to be like, “This is the start of my brand.” This is your starter item. It’s funny, when I tell people this – they’re always like, “I never thought…”
[laughs] It’s really cool!
That’s why I went with ISEKAI. This is what my world is. One of OVERSOUL’s long-term goals is actually establishing ‘my world,’ if that makes sense? There’s only a handful of designers who have, like, captured a signature silhouette. For example, Rick Owens. When you see [a Rick Owens piece], you know it’s Rick Owens. If Zara did the same shit as Rick Owens, you would look at it and be like, “That’s Rick Owens.” You wouldn't call it Zara. That’s what I’m trying to establish for myself, to create that silhouette for myself eventually in the future.
What’s up next for OVERSOUL?
Hmm, how should I put this... should I leak something? I’m going to drop an accessories part sometime soon. That’s in the design process right now, but I’m looking forward to doing my next big collection.
There’s this one song that I found in the past during my peak weeb days: Plastic Love by Mariya Takeuchi. A couple of months ago, they released the first official music video for it, after like 35 years, which is fucking insane – they should have done that a long time ago. I totally forgot about the song until I saw the music video. It’s something that I could relate to before and can relate to now, and I definitely want to build my next collection based on Plastic Love.
I think Plastic Love works really well because I’m surrounded by that scene in Vancouver – I work in Yaletown, and that’s the Yaletown lifestyle. It’s very lustful, but you don’t care. It’s all fake shit, really. That’s what Yaletown culture sorta is. I wouldn’t say that I’m like that, but I think that I could definitely expand on the topic through my brand. It’s not necessarily identity crisis, but the genre and artist kind of make it a subculture.
There’s also a few collabs on the way. One with a music group, another with a tattoo artist. What I really wanna do with the tattoo artist – he does anime tattoos – is ero art. Like, erotica. I think it’s a slept-on art style. It’s not generally for the public, per se, so I think that it would be something worth making. Super ecchi, maybe line art. I want it very exaggerated, even bondage-type shit.
There’s a lot of things where people are like, “Oh, that’s too much!” But you know what, it could be sick! This is why I do things solely for myself. As long as I get a reaction from somebody, I’m happy with that. Wanting a response, not even approval, just being acknowledged, that this shit exists, it motivates me to keep doing what I do.
I thought about doing graphic design shit; anime erotica art goes really well with techno. That kind of scene, the way that European style posters are, if you take the art and fuse them together, it works really well. I’m like, “How come no one has done this yet?”
So you’re treating it more like art and not just a part of anime culture?
I view anime as its own respective art, and with art, there’s no rules, so I can just take this and this, and bang. At the end of the day, everybody wants to see new and cool things. People are always going to have their own subjective opinions, but as long as you have their attention, you’ve already won the battle. That’s the mentality that I carry, that everyone has their own opinions.
Last question: what are your top 5 video games?
You know, I was trying to prepare for this interview – I didn’t even think this would come up.
[laughs] Come on, man.
I’m gonna put Super Smash Bros. Melee on there – I’ve been playing it for so long, it’s literally been bonded with my DNA.
I don’t wanna say Ocarina of Time, because I think that it’s everyone’s favourite, but I mean, it’s still up there. It’s an all-time masterpiece, but I enjoyed Majora’s Mask a lot more. The concept of the world being blown up by the moon, in-game time, the moon crashes in like 3 days, and you keep going back in time, skipping whatever, I think it was so much fun, so yeah.
I really like Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It’s very recent, but I have so many hours on it already, and I can’t stop. I haven’t felt this way about a game in a long time. It’s so replayable. Once you finish Ocarina of Time, you probably don’t touch it for a while. When you play FE, you’re like, okay, let’s do the next one. There’s three houses! Even after doing all three, it’s like, “Oh, I’m gonna try again, but I’m gonna make this character like this.”
I grew up playing a lot of Roller Coaster Tycoon, unfortunately, but it’s fun. It’s not a typical gamer thing, but I love it.
I might put Final Fantasy VII on there, too – when Aerith died, I real-life teared up, like, “Dude, no way, you’re really gonna kill her off like that? You gotta save her!”… and then she dies. I’m pretty sure after that happened, I didn’t touch the game for a week. I was actually emotionally harmed. I’m really into RPGs – being able to emotionally attach yourself to characters, I think it’s a beautiful thing.
Any last things you wanna say?
I want my brand comparable to Chrome Hearts, MISBHV or Rude [Vogue]; when they have their own aesthetic and that’s what they do, that’s what I want to build as well. The idea that I take a lot of inspiration from gaming, it really shows.
Maybe I’m hungover, so I can’t really find the words right now, but for anyone trying to do fashion, music, whatever, as saturated as the community seems at the moment, you just have to get your foot in the door and start. Yeah, there’s competition, but to be honest, with all the people here who have brands, I’m friends with all of the people who make them, and I have no judgement about if their clothes are wack or not. Some things I don’t agree with, but everyone’s on the same hustle.
OVERSOUL’s ISEKAI collection is available now online at oversoul.online.

What’s funny is that both your requests came in right after another, @catapples and anon! Thank you so much for your nice words, too ❤ Don’t worry, I’ll be writing more Bandit/Jäger in the future :) I hope this is to both your liking!! (Rating T, angst/comfort, ~1.3k words)
.
There is no indication of mercy in their eyes, no residual compassion, nothing human. Jäger once thought he’d seen callous men, unrepentant, unscrupulous and inhuman, only now he knows he was wrong to attribute that term to them: they were fuelled by hatred, self-righteousness, a sense of belonging, they were all fighting for something they believed in, regardless of how destructive and illogical it was. These… things – he hesitates to give them a name due to how indescribable they are – they don’t feel. They’re empty, devoid of love and hate, incapable of holding values, vessels that contain nothing but death and agony for themselves and others. It’s possible they’re working towards achieving a hive mind, making their origin – whatever it is that birthed them – their highest priority, but that, too, is merely adhering to instincts, following the most basic of cognitive functions.
He’s going to die. He hasn’t made peace with this fact yet but he’ll have to. Very soon.
The voices in his ear, so reassuring previously, are now eerily silent. He knows something broke during the crash, that’s why he lost all communication yet right now it seems fitting: every man faces death alone. At least no one is going to hear his screams, most of all Bandit who…
He hopes they’ll be alright. He doesn’t want to be the cause of their demise, desperately wishes for them to make it out alive even if he won’t, considers leaving a message in blood on the ground that absolves them from any survivor’s guilt because it’s not their fault. None of this is their fault.
His gun clicks uselessly. It’s the sound that determines his fate. He’s out of ammo.
Headshots have proven to be the most effective, keeping the humanoid creatures at bay that once harboured aspirations, hopes and dreams, and now are filled with nothing but a raging, inexplicable bloodlust. He’s seen how a yellow one devastated a wall so those were his priority targets though now he wishes he kept some of them alive: at least he’d go quickly instead of being disembowelled. The worst part is that he’s immobile, the stabbing pain in his side barely registering anymore yet he knows it’ll become unbearable if he tries to make a run for it. It’s useless – they’re faster than him. Probably would be even if he could walk.
The last line of defence is a flare and it’s laughable how he still hopes that maybe they’re deterred by bright lights, maybe they’ll think it’s fire and actually be scared of it. He’s not surprised to find out they aren’t. He makes one last ditch effort to get up as they approach him slowly, creeping up on him like wild animals though as soon as he puts some weight on his left leg, paralysing pain shoots through him and makes his knees buckle. There’s a loud noise when he hits the ground and at first, he thinks it’s one of his bones breaking, his impending death. When more follow, he realises they’re gunshots.
In his distraction, he misses how one of the monstrosities jumps at him, slashing wildly and trying to tear into his flesh before he can react, luckily only ripping his clothes, grazing his skin in shallow cuts. The next moment, its head explodes, rains down warm blood onto Jäger who only just manages to catch the slumping body threatening to crush him, all sharp and spikes and a nauseating, foul smell. It’s dragged off of him to the sounds of more gunfire and he only needs to take one look at the person fiercely scowling down at him to know that he’s going to make it. There’s no way he’d let him die now, even if he’s bleeding profusely from the wound on his side, even if he’s getting increasingly light-headed due to blood loss already.
“A flare? Really?”, Bandit snaps at him and sounds positively furious, “What was your plan, huh? Starting a rave? You fucking idiot.”
Jäger almost laughs in relief. Bandit is absolutely terrified, panic visible in his wild eyes and shaking hands as he kneels down to get a better look at him yet he refuses to show it or even admit to it. He has to play the hero and Jäger has never been gladder to see him.
It’s not over, however. After Doc is done checking on him, having asked endless questions, tested his cognitive abilities and applied a bandage over his chest, they’re back to taking care of the sheer neverending abominations surrounding them. Bandit throws his pistol into Jäger’s lap, narrowly missing his injury and rolling his eyes at his complaint though Jäger appreciates the gesture nonetheless since he can contribute now instead of just moaning uselessly. All four of them panic at the emergence of one of the big guys which necessitates Tachanka carrying Jäger off to relative safety while Bandit in all seriousness jumps onto the thing’s back, screaming like a banshee, and stabs it repeatedly. It’s a miracle Doc doesn’t faint at so much disregard of personal well-being.
The siege seems to take forever, Tachanka relocates his LMG several times and Jäger focuses on covering whoever’s in desperate need of reloading, earning him a shouting match with Bandit over whether he tried to test how bulletproof his helmet really is. Hearing Bandit rage about friendly fire and hurling insults as he guts the beasts that make the mistake of coming too close and puts bullet after bullet into mutated heads is strangely exhilarating and reassuring at the same time. Jäger can almost ignore the throbbing hurt encompassing his entire body. Almost.
He’s dizzy regardless, loses track of time for a moment and the next thing he knows is that he’s dragged to his feet roughly and half-carried outside, his vision blurring and his head swimming. Bandit by his side won’t stop chattering, cursing out Thermite, the... things, all of humanity and, most of all, Jäger. As soon as he’s placed in a seat on the heli, Doc has had enough and explodes, rebukes Bandit for blaming Jäger of all people, telling him he needs rest and immediate surgery and he should just leave him be. He can’t see Jäger’s smile under his helmet, he doesn’t know it’s alright, doesn’t know that this is the only way Bandit knows how to express worry.
“Fuck you”, is Bandit’s only response as he removes both their helmets. Both of them must look frightful, covered in blood, but Bandit doesn’t even seem to care as he awkwardly wraps his arms around Jäger’s shoulders and just holds him close. Stunned silence follows because none of the others have any idea how deep Bandit’s feelings run, they’ve never seen him card his hands through Jäger’s hair like he’s doing now, never watched him cling to him as if he’s drowning. It was a secret thing between them, a secrecy Bandit fought to uphold yet now tosses aside without a second thought. “You’re such an asshole. And don’t you dare fucking sleep now.”
He turns a little, presses their foreheads together and smiles when a hand finds the one currently not clutching his side, grips it tightly. “Okay”, he agrees and it’s a lot easier to say than to do, “am I going to be alright?”
“Yeah. Of course you are, I’m here now”, Bandit murmurs and he’s right. Now that he’s here, it’ll be fine. They’ve taken off a while ago, they’re safe and still, Bandit is trembling by his side as if he’s the one needing comfort, so Jäger ignores the sharp sensation in his body to lean that little bit closer to him, enjoying the feeling of gentle fingers stroking his hair.

Merry Christmas, @daddy--oreo!
Have some feels and fluff! I hope you like it!
Rating: T
Summary: In which Stiles and Derek face their greatest foes yet: miscommunication and a crippling lack of self esteem! But hey, they work it all out in the end!
*****
Cast Aside These Broken Hearts
“It’s just a sprained ankle, buddy,” Stiles says, trying to pull his foot away but having no luck.
“I’m not your buddy,” Derek says, looking up from where he’s carefully wrapping Stiles’ ankle in a bandage to glare at him.
“Of course not,” Stiles says, sighing in what sounds like defeat.
It’s strange, Derek thinks, how shutting Stiles up just doesn’t fill him with the same glee that it used to.
“I didn’t…” Derek tries, “I mean, that’s not..”
“Whatever,” Stiles says, taking Derek’s stuttering as a chance to break away and stand up, ignoring the pain shooting through his ankle at the pressure. “I’ll get out of your way. See you next time something tries to kill us, I guess.”
He’s halfway to the door before Derek tries to stop him.
“Stiles,” he says, “I… you can’t drive like that. Let me bring you home at least.”
“I don’t drive with my left foot,” Stiles says, and then he’s gone, clicking the door shut softly behind him.
It somehow makes Derek cringe more than if he’d just slammed it.
“What the hell was that?” he asks the empty room. The room, thankfully, doesn’t answer.
.
“Why is it always you?” Derek groans as he dodges another honest-to-god fireball, pulling Stiles down to the ground with him before he can get barbecued.
“Because the universe is fucking cruel,” Stiles replies, still trying to catch his breath from running. “Obviously.”
Derek finds himself unexpectedly smarting at the comment. Stiles is always sarcastic and quick-witted, but the extra bitterness Derek hears in his voice recently is new. And unwelcome.
“Just stay down,” he says roughly, shoving Stiles behind what’s left of a warehouse wall.
“Hell no,” Stiles says, pulling himself up to crouch next to Derek again. “You want me to hide while everyone else gets charbroiled? You’re nuts!”
“We’ll heal,” Derek says, “just stay out of the way and we’ll take care of it.”
“Hey!” Stiles exclaims, “I’ve saved your furry asses more times than I can count! Don’t tell me to just roll over and play dead!”
“Stiles!” Derek shouts, eyes burning red in full force for a moment until he can get it under control.
Stiles, while resolutely refusing to show any fear, has gone silent.
“Just…please,” Derek says. Begs, really. “Just stay safe for once, ok?”
Stiles considers him for a long long moment, before finally nodding tightly.
“Fine,” he says. “I’ll sit this one out. But if you or any of my friends get fired, I’m resurrecting you just so I can kill you again! You got it?”
Before Derek can reply, a fireball flies past him, and he turns to face their opponents, roaring in anger at full volume.
He can’t be sure, but it definitely sounds like Stiles is laughing in delight behind him. But he’ll worry about that when all these freaking firestarters are taken care of.
.
.
“What I don’t get,” Stiles says, tossing the basketball over to Scott without even trying for the net, “is why he still hates me so much. I mean, it’s been like 6 years. And now I can’t even spend summer break back home without the ‘grr, arg’ act!”
“Pretty sure that’s vampires, dude,” Scott says, tossing the ball back to Stiles, who catches it with a huff.
“Why are we even doing this?” Stiles asks. “Neither of us play basketball.”
“It was your idea,” Scott says, shrugging.
“I think I needed to be doing something manly while I had this embarrassing conversation,” Stiles says, clutching the basketball to his chest tightly.
“It’s not embarrassing,” Scott says, “you’re allowed to talk about your feelings. Even if you don’t know what they are yet.”
“Oh my god,” Stiles whines, “you take a year of 101’s and think you’re Dr. Phil!”
Scott scoffs. “Dr. Phil is a hack!”
“True,” Stiles allows.
“And Derek doesn’t hate you,” Scott adds, belatedly. “I think that might be the problem.”
“What does that even mean?” Stiles asks, exasperated. “He’s always brushing me off, or telling me to stay out the way, or questioning all my plans, like I’m not training with Deaton on top of literally going to school for law enforcement!”
Scott decides to switch tactics to try and get through.
“How long have you wanted to be a cop?” Scott asks.
“My whole life,” Stiles says. “Except for that summer I wanted to be a rock star.”
“We were awful,” Scott laughs. “And how long have we known each other?”
“Forever, dude,” Stiles says. “I don’t know, like 15 years or so?”
“Right,” Scott says. “And how long has it been since I got bitten?”
“Six years,” Stiles says. That one, he knows he’ll never forget.
“And how long have you been in love with Derek?” Scott asks.
“Five years,” Stiles says immediately, and then cringes with what Scott can only assume is his brain re-booting.
“So you see the problem now?” Scott asks, gently.
Stiles just nods slowly and hands the ball over to Scott, who has gotten much closer than he was a moment before.
“I think I do,” he says. “I need to go…like right now, I need to go and find Derek.”
“Yeah you do!” Scott says, clapping Stiles on the shoulder. “Go get him!”
Stiles laughs and shakes his head.
“I need to go apologize to him,” he says. “I must have been making him so uncomfortable with my feelings or chemo-signals or whatever other stuff werewolf-y noses pick up on!”
“I don’t think you need to do that,” Scott tries, but Stiles is already jogging off towards the Jeep and waving goodbye.
.
.
“So,” Stiles says as Derek opens the door. “We should talk.”
Derek looks at him warily, but moves aside to allow Stiles in anyway, closing and locking the door behind him. The new apartment is nicer and warmer looking than the loft, but he still doesn’t ever feel completely at ease.
Stiles kicks off his shoes and settles down on one side of the couch, folding his legs under him and leaning his back against the couch arm. After a pointed stare at both Derek and the other side of the couch, Derek rolls his eyes and goes to sit down, mirroring Stiles’ pose just to annoy him.
“I wanted to apologize,” Stiles says once he’s seated. And well. That was definitely not what Derek was expecting.
“For what?” Derek asks, smirking. “If it’s about the time you dropped my favorite mug and tried to convince me a rogue pigeon took it out… don’t bother. Nobody believed that.”
“I’m being serious here,” Stiles says, frowning. “And I am sorry about the mug. But that’s not what this is about.”
“Then what?” Derek asks, giving Stiles his full attention.
“I need to apologize for my like…everything,” Stiles says, waving a hand around as if to encompass his entire being. “I didn’t realize I was even doing it until it was too late, but I’ll try to stop from now on. I don’t want to make you uncomfortable anymore.”
“What are you even talking about?” Derek asks, bewildered and more than a little concerned at the tone of Stiles’ voice.
“The feelings!” Stiles bursts out. “The romantic-y type feelings! That are not reciprocated. Like, at all. I just… I don’t want to hurt you.”
“Oh,” Derek says, suddenly subdued. “Those feelings.”
“Yeah,” Stiles says, wiping angrily at his eyes with the back of his hands and avoiding Derek’s stare.
“Maybe we should just not hang around each other for a while,” Stiles says, quietly.
Derek flinches back at that, but pulls himself together before his face can show just how much he hates that idea.
“If that’s what you think is best,” he says.
“I guess I do,” Stiles says, standing up and heading for the door.
Before he can get past Derek though, he finds himself stopped by Derek’s fingers around his wrist.
“Wait,” Derek says. “Please. Just, don’t run off.”
“I really don’t want to stay and humiliate myself further,” Stiles says, moving to wrench his arm away, but Derek’s grip stays tight.
“Is it really that humiliating?” Derek asks, looking oddly hurt. “I mean, I know you don’t feel the same way I do. But is it so awful that you think you need to run away?”
“I don’t want to put any pressure on you!” Stiles says, “not even subconsciously. You deserve way better than some scrawny asshole shoving his hormones in your face all the time!”
“What?” Derek asks, suddenly feeling like he’s completely lost the plot.
He drops his grip from Stiles’ wrist, and watches as it goes slack and falls to Stile’s side.
Stiles sighs deeply before squaring his shoulders and finally looking Derek in the face again.
“I’m fucking crazy about you, man,” he says, pausing to steel himself and take a deep breath. “I’m sorry.”
Derek, however, is just looking up at him like is entire life has been a lie.
“You’re crazy about me?” he asks, incredulously. “Since when?”
“About twenty minutes ago,” Stiles replies. “Give or take about five years.”
“What.” Derek’s so shocked that he can’t even make it into a real question.
“I’m a little slow on the uptake sometimes, shut up,” Stiles says, crossing his arms against his chest defensively.
Suddenly, Derek is laughing. Full on, body-shaking, gasping-for-air laughing, head buried in his hands on his lap.
Stiles really isn’t sure what to do in this situation. He’s prepared for if Derek gets angry(retreating,) or if he gets mean(wolfsbane and then retreating), but no protocol for Derek melting down with laughter.
“I don’t know what’s happening here,” he says as Derek’s laughter starts to die down, “but I’m gonna go now. Thanks for not mauling me and all that.”
“No!” Derek says, standing up so suddenly that Stiles gets a little dizzy.
And then Derek is right there in front of him, green eyes shining from the tears of laughter, smiling at Stiles like he knows something that he does not.
Which, considering the way the day is going, Stiles imagines is entirely possible.
.
“I thought you were apologizing for not feeling the same way I do,” Derek says, finally, reaching out to rest one big hand against Stiles’ neck, cupping his jaw.
“I..I was,” Stiles says, shivering at the touch against his valiant attempt not to.
“Then you obviously have no idea how I feel about you,” Derek says, smiling in that way that always makes Stiles knees feel like jello.
“How do you feel about me?” Stiles asks, voice hoarse, “because I was under the impression that it was somewhere between hatred and reluctant ally most days.”
“I’m fucking crazy about you, too,” Derek says, and then he’s leaning in and all Stiles can do is meet him halfway for an incredibly sweet kiss.
.
“Hey,” Stiles says later, when the Netflix screen asks them if they’re still watching the show they haven’t seen a minute of.
“Yeah?” Derek asks, running his thumb under Stiles’ kiss-swollen lips and staring up at him with lust-hazed eyes.
Stiles grins, completely forgetting whatever he was about to say.
“Never mind,” he says instead, moving down to kiss Derek again. “This is way more important.”
Suffice to say, Derek agrees.

With less than a week until publication, an extract from my novel Walkaway
“They’re right to be afraid,” said Natalie. “This world, if you aren’t a success, you’re a failure. If you’re not on top, you’re on the bottom. If you’re in between, you’re hanging on by your fingernails, hoping you can get a better grip before your strength gives out. Everyone holding on is too scared to let go. Everyone on the bottom is too worn down to try. The people on the top? They’re the ones who depend on things staying the way they are.”
“So what do you call your philosophy then? Post-fear?” asked Hubert, Etc.
She shrugged. “Don’t care. Lots of names for it. None of that matters. That’s what I care about.” She pointed to the dancers and the beds. Another line of machines was online and folding table-and-chair sets were piling up.
“What about ‘communist’?”
“What about it?”
“That’s a label with a lot of history. You could be communists.”
She waved her beard at him. “Communist party. That doesn’t make us ‘communists’ any more than throwing a birthday party makes us ‘birthdayists.’ Communism is an interesting thing to do, nothing I ever want to be.”
The ladder clanged and the catwalk vibrated like a tuning fork. They looked over the edge just as Seth’s head came into view. “Hello, lovebirds!” he said. He was sloppy and jittery, high on something interesting. Hubert, Etc, grabbed him before he could reel over the guard-rail. Another person popped over the edge, one of the bearded threesome that had been by the beer.
“Hey-hey!” He seemed stoned, too, but it was hard for Hubert, Etc to tell.
“This is the guy,” Seth said. “The guy with the names.”
“You’re Etcetera!” the new guy said, arms wide like he was greeting a lost brother. “I’m Billiam.” He gave Hubert, Etc a lingering drunkard’s embrace. Hubert, Etc had dated guys, was open to the idea, but Billiam, beautiful tilted eyes aside, was not his type and too high to consider in any event. Hubert, Etc firmly peeled him off, and the girl helped.
“Billiam,” she said, “what have you two been up to?”
Billiam and Seth locked eyes and dissolved into hysterical giggles.
She gave Billiam a playful shove that sent him sprawling, one foot dangling over the catwalk.
“Meta,” she said. “Or something like it.”
He’d heard of it. It gave you ironic distance – a very now kind of high. Conspiracy people thought it was too zeitgeisty to be a coincidence, claimed it was spread to soften the population for its miserable lot. In his day – eight years before – the scourge had been called “Now,” something they gave to source-code auditors and drone pilots to give them robotic focus. He’d eaten a shit-ton of it while working on zepps. It made him feel like a happy android. The conspiracy people had said the same thing about Now that they said about Meta. End of the day, anything that made you discount objective reality and assign a premium to some kind of internal mental state was going to be both pro-survival and pro-status quo.
“What’s your name?” Hubert, Etc said.
“Does it matter?” she said.
“It’s driving me nuts,” he admitted.
“You’ve got it in your address-book,” she said.
He rolled his eyes. Of course he did. He rubbed the interface patch on his cuff and fingered it for a moment. “Natalie Redwater?” he said. “As in the Redwaters?”
“There are a lot of Redwaters,” she said. “We’re some of them. Not the ones you’re thinking of, though.”
“Close to them,” Billiam said from his stoned, prone ironic world. “Cousins?”
“Cousins,” she said.
Hubert, Etc tried hard not to let phrases like “trustafarian” and “fauxhemian” cross his mind. He probably failed. She didn’t look happy about having her name out.
“Cousins as in ‘poor country relations,’” Seth said, from his fetal position, “or cousins as in ‘get to use the small airplane’?”
Hubert, Etc felt bad, not just because he was crushing on her. He’d known people born to privilege, plenty in the zepp scene, and they could be nice people whose salient facts extended beyond unearned privilege. Seth wouldn’t have normally been a dick about this kind of thing – it was precisely the sort of thing he wasn’t normally a dick about – but he was high.
“Cousins as in ‘enough to worry about kidnapping’ and ‘not enough to pay the ransom,’” she said, with the air of someone repeating a timeworn phrase.
The arrival of the two stoned boys sucked the magic out of the night. Below, the machines found a steady rhythm, and Rule 34 spun again, blending witch house and New Romantic, automatically syncing with the machines’ beat. It wasn’t pulling a lot of dancers, but a few die hards were out, being beautiful and in motion. Hubert, Etc stared at them.
Three things happened: the music changed (psychobilly and dubstep), he opened his mouth to say something, and Billiam said, in a tittering sing-song: “Buuuusted!” and pointed at the ceiling.
They followed his finger and saw the flock of drones detach from the ceiling, fold back their wings, and plunge into a scream¬ing drop. Natalie pulled her beard back on and Billiam made sure his was on too.
“Seth, masks!” Hubert, Etc shook his friend. There had been a good reason for Seth to carry both of their masks, but he couldn’t remember it. Seth sat up with his eyebrows raised and a smirk on his face. Tucking chin to chest, Hubert, Etc swarmed over Seth and roughly turned out his pockets. He slapped his mask to his face and felt the fabric adhere in bunches and whorls as his breath teased it out and the oils in his skin were wicked through its weave. He did Seth.
“You don’t need to do this,” Seth said.
“Right,” said Hubert, Etc. “It’s out of the goodness of my heart.”
“You’re worried they’ll walk my social graph and find you in the one-hop/high-intensity zone.” Seth’s smile, glowing in the darkness of his face, was infuriatingly calm. It vanished behind the mask. That was the stupid Meta. “You’d be screwed then. They’ll run your data going back years, dude, until they find something. They always find something. They’ll put the screws to you, threaten you with every horrible unless you turn narc. Room 101 all the way, baby—”
Hubert, Etc gave Seth a harder-than-necessary slap upside the head. Seth said “Ow,” mildly, stopped talking. The drones flew a coverage pattern, like pigeons on crank. Hubert, Etc’s interface surfaces shivered as they detected attempted incursions and shut down. Hubert, Etc downloaded countermeasures regularly, if only to fight off drive-by identity thief creeps, but he shivered back, wondering if he was more up-to-date than the cop-bots.
The party had broken up. Dancers fled, some holding furniture. The music leapt to offensive-capability volume, a sound so loud it made your eyes hurt. Hubert, Etc clapped his hands over his ears just as one of the drones clipped an I-beam and spun out, smashing to the ground. A drone dive-bombed the sound-system’s control unit, knocked it to the ground. The sound went on.
Hubert, Etc pulled Seth to sit, pointed at the ladder. They let go of their ears to climb down. It was torture: the brutal sound, the painful vibrations of the metal under their hands and feet. Natalie came down, pointed at a doorway.
Something heavy and painful clipped Hubert, Etc in the head and shoulder, knocking him to his knees. He got to all fours, then to his feet, seeing stars behind the mask.
He looked for whatever had hit him. It took him a second to make sense of what he saw. Billiam lay on the floor, limbs in a strange swastika, head visibly misshapen, an inky pool of blood spread around it in the dimness. Fighting dizziness and pain from the sound, he bent over Billiam and gingerly peeled the beard. It was saturated with blood. Billiam’s face was smashed into a parody of human features; his forehead had an ugly dent encompassing one eye. Hubert, Etc tried for a pulse at Billiam’s wrist and then his throat, but all he felt was the thunder of the music. He put his hand on Billiam’s chest to feel for the rise and fall of breath, but couldn’t tell.
He looked up, but Seth and Natalie had already reached the door. They must not have seen Billiam fall, must not have seen him crash into Hubert, Etc. A drone ruffled Hubert, Etc’s hair. Hubert, Etc wanted to cry. He pushed the feeling down, remembering first aid. He shouldn’t move Billiam. But if he stayed, he’d be nabbed. It might be too late. The part of his brain in charge of cowardly self-justification chattered: Why not just go? It’s not like you can do anything. He might even be dead. He looks dead.
Hubert, Etc had made a concerted study of that voice and had concluded that it was an asshole. He tried to think past the self-serving rationalizations. He grabbed a bag someone left behind and, working gently, rolled Billiam into recovery position and put the bag under his head. He was propping Billiam up with a broken chair and a length of pipe, eyes squinted, head hammer¬ing, when someone grabbed him by his sore shoulder. He almost vomited. This was the day he’d known was coming all his life, when he ended up in prison.
But it wasn’t a cop – it was Natalie. She said something inaudible over the music. He pointed at Billiam. She knelt down and made a light. She threw up, having the presence of mind to do so in her purse. Hubert, Etc noted distantly that she was thinking of esophageal cells and DNA. That distant part admired her foresight. She got to her feet, grabbed him again by his bad arm, yanked hard. He screamed in pain, the sound lost in the roar, and went, leaving Billiam behind.

The pale green room
submitted by @the--kaleidoscope
Bradley sat alone in his sparse room, only a solitary chair and bed decorated the room. The only other thing to keep him company was screens around the room which lit up with the faces of those he had once known. The faces of those he had grown up with and watched die.
Each night they would light up, giving the room a pale blue glow. Apart from that there was no other colours which could permeate the room, no colours to cloud his thoughts and dreams of those he had lost. Dreams in turn which could not escape the pale room.
He sat there thinking on the days gone by, on the people he had lost and opened a small notebook and began to write out his thoughts which spilled in a sorrow filled torrent.
The scent of death on the wind, is all I have now. It’s all I am and all I will be, until the day I die. I continue to sing to the faces, the little song that Morgana taught me: Past the world, past the night, past the stars where sea birds fly. Past your dreams to toyland shore, where we will meet again once more.
In return they sing it back to me, to remind me continuously that I can never forget them. I sometimes wonder what it would have been like should I have been taken in one of their places, would they have sat there with me and sung?
I hope so I really do.
Though I think I am the right one to receive this position, the pit in which I have fallen never would have been right for them as well. It should be me who bears the depths of sin which I have become rather than them. There they can sit watching me from their pillars of innocence.
He paused in his writing to look behind him at a face roughly 16 years of age whose sharp hazel eyes seemed to bore into Bradley. Cutting right through him accusingly, almost in a way ignoring the man who sat on the worn through wood of the single chair in the room.
Even now I can see Robert still watches me with that same look on his face as when he died. That same accusation on his face which still haunts me to this day, when I left him to die. I left him NO! Yes. I left him. I left him.
I only cared for my own survival and I left him be taken from me. My last friend. I abandoned him… When he tripped … I never went back for him … I only kept running. HE WAS THE LAST AND HE WAS TAKEN FROM ME!
Now I have a new chance, I have a new extension to my family with Morgana, Vlad and Joanne. I will never let anything happen to them, for the people I have left behind and for the promise I once broke I will protect them with my life. Humanity shall never take another person from my protection again.
He closed his eyes for a second and even then he saw their faces, all around the room. Though with his eyes closed, they had their bodies back rather than lifeless screens. Among them even Robert could change their expression.
With this he could remember them in the way they most liked to show themselves, in their little fantasy games. Robert as stoic and protective paladin he always imagined himself to be, Rachel was the healer, always looking out for those who were hurt. Arya, was the brave knight, fighting for the benefit of the world. All of them he remembered had wished to use their training to the benefit of the rest of the world.
He felt that was why they were taken from him, they were too good for the eventual role that he was to fulfill. He was always more morally greyer than the rest of them, more addicted to the smell and taste of blood than them. Always holding that capacity for destruction and anger that was to be tapped into.
He opened his eyes again and let his eyes wander over the paper, going back to the very first entry in the diary.
A quarter to the best of times
We were all taken at the age of four, a group of ten of us. Eight I think from orphans and two from actual families, Robert and Rachel always seemed to remember there being parents in their faintest memories, yet apart from black outlines there was never any substance behind their memories…
It was at this point where we finally began to see each other, fleeting glances from around corners, just behind closing doors, but never close. At first I wondered who these people were and how like me they were.
Our daily routine was hard even then, training our bodies to be faster, be better. Even then I think they slipped some blood into our drinks, some of them had an odd taste which I remember my five year old self sticking his tounge out in disgust, if only that picture of innocence knew what he was going to become….
Finally we were allowed to talk, get to know each other and connect and as we did the days seemed to unwind. It was a quarter to the best of times.
The best of times
As we grew we were divided into two halves, each working on teamwork and coordination. We were order to get to know the people we were placed with. I was placed with four others, three girls and one guy. Respectively there were called: The twins Robert and Rachel, Arya, a quick and lively girl and Amy, a strong and selfless soul.
We all found that talking and chatting became our favourite pastimes, we all fell in together and we fell in fast. We flirted, joked and trained together, becoming the family that each of us never had.
We dreamed of growing up and living our lives together, going to sourires, fulfilling our goals. … leaving this sterile and cold bunker.
At some point we all decided we would share birthdays, all ten of us. That way we would always be able to celebrate together and find the time to meet each other. All of the planning we did encompassed so many activities which we could end up doing, so many blissful days were spent in each others company.
During our time there we occasionally got time on the surface, where we could go see things in cinemas! That was such a rare treat and pleased Arya who was the most stifled by the enclosing and tight walls of our underground home. She loved to explore the overground, jumping over walls and scaling anything in sight. Even then she could move better than I can today, her smiles on those days was wider than any I have seen since…
Robert and Amy decided to start going out during this time, whether they were just playing at love out of a desire to match some of the couples we watched on tv or they genuinely loved each other I have no idea. We never got to find out in the end, but all I can say is that they were happy with each other. We all were.
They told us we were the next step for humanity, we were not like normal humans, we would be better than them in every way and we believed them. It made us so convinced we would be able to easily complete our dreams once we left.
Our music practices increased all the time, learning all sorts of different instruments…… We sung so many songs to each others, harmonizing with each other and connecting through our songs and music. We could play tunes together in small impromptu bands whenever we wanted, it was our greatest area of freedom and we couldn’t get enough of it.
We played many games, especially our little fantasy ones. Fighting invisible foes and gaining acclaim throughout the world. Oh how we enjoyed ourselves, living out our wildest fantasies.
Time whirled by, narry a day passed without a smile on our faces. This was the best of times.
A quarter past the best of times
Yet our days darkened. One of us died, he was from the other group, so it didn’t affect us as hard as them. The work had become too much and he died just before our fifteenth birthday. There was no party that day. His collapse took so much of the energy out of our everyday activities, going to the surface meant less to us without him. Even Arya never smiled while scaling everything, her beautiful smile never appeared again.
Then the “purge” of our ranks began and we started dropping like flies. Amy was the first to die, giving everything to others till she gave her own life.
Another went mad killing someone before themselves. After that the screens began to appear, they displayed the faces of our lost ones, their mouths forever trying to say the words which now went unsaid, their songs unsung.
Yet they still told us we were the advancement of humanity… Still told us we were special, that we were meant to pathe the way for the rest of humanity.
Time no longer seemed to flow, it was a quarter past the best of times.
Bradley began flicking through the pages quickly, wanting to avoid his crazed rambling as he watched the others in his family fall around him till only he and Robert remained. Then he had to watch as even Robert was taken from his life. The writing became incomprehensive for a few days after his death, then suddenly it transitioned into a journal merely stating the training activities done each day, hiding the emotion behind a layer of rigidity and work.
That changed again the day he became a siren, the entries just stopped, the days stood empty except for a few lines stained in little drops of liquid, all had the words, I’m doing it! I’m avenging all of you! Humanity shall pay for what it did to us.
Finally he reached the page he had been looking for.
After Robert died they continued to train me, both mentally and physically. They took my grief over my family’s deaths and honed it, all the while repeating the same phrase in different forms. You were are to be the next step for man, the next evolution.
They gave me someone to blame for their deaths too, humanity. I was so grief stricken I believed everything they said and slowly they turned my grief into a lust for death and destruction. Then after the age of eighteen when I became their Siren they offered a way to quench that lust for blood and pain.
They released me every night on the surface above, allowed me to kill who I wished. So in my desire for revenge, I became the hand of death, of fire and destruction. The killer in the night.
Then each morning I would return to my room and sit along with these ghosts of mine. Slowly I became the monster in the basement they had always desired and the man I was died.
My bloodlust over these years could not be sated, I continued to drink the blood of humans I drained or killed and couldn’t get enough of it. For me this was the sweet and comforting addiction of revenge. Destroying humans for my own inability to protect the only ones I had ever loved.
However it drastically changed for me when I was told to perform at the club the company owned. There I performed without my mask to regular humans, mostly I did the mixing as a DJ, other times included playing as solo band.
Over the time there I killed many people, yet one human fascinated me. I have no idea what it was about her, be it her own look of loss in her eyes or the inquisitive way which they roamed about the room. She was always fascinated by every new sight, either way… I was drawn in by them. When we first talked I approached her and after inquiring if I could sit next to her she let me.
Apparently by then she had been watching me for a while and was wondering where I lived, since I never seemed to leave the club nor turn either. Of course I told her that I lived there, which seemed enough of an explanation to satisfy her.
At first I talked and chatted to her to observe what a “normal” human life was like, seeing it like observing an animal in a zoo. At first I always pondered on taking her life, removing one of one of the more interesting humans from the world. Yet I never managed to, I told my anger it was always because I was tearing a swath of death through a different part of the city.
In the end, I began to enjoy the chats with her, look forward to them even and in those seconds part of who I once was poked through the seething mass of hatred covered in skin that comprised me. She enjoyed my singing and began to learn how to sing so she could join me … I would have liked to see that.
Yet whenever I left her and returned to the pale room, the anger would return in force. The faces of the ghosts which surrounded me reminding me of why I existed, to punish humanity for taking them from me.
In the end she made me realise my most important lesson, that there was no real difference between me and the people I killed, except my talent merely made me physically stronger than them.
I finally opened my heart to another person and the company crushed the last pieces of it. They told me they had taken a few humans I could enact my wrath on and put them in a dark underground chamber. Naturally I took the offer and entered the room, feeding on each human I found. Leaving a dull metallic river flowing behind me. Then I came to the last one … It …. It was her.
I couldn’t stop, the bloodlust had taken me and I can still hear her scream ring out clearly now as I leapt at her. That night my anger left me, left and has never come back.
Now I sit here alone, with a chasm in my heart. Alone in the pale room, with only the screens of the dead to keep me company. The only things that mattered to me were gone … I felt like I couldn’t accept it.
All the things that I have done … the trails of bodies in my wake … the beast that I’ve become. All in a false sense of revenge to cover my own regrets and instabilities. I did everything to avenge them and ended up betraying everything they wanted…. I wonder if they hate me?
I would ask for forgiveness … but the chance for that passes a long time ago … I wish the past was different, that somehow I had died in Robert’s place. Yet … Then again I would never wish this fate upon anyone.
So I write this to say even if you do hate me… even if the memory of who I once was is gone… and a demon is all you see. Take consolation in the knowledge I will die with my sins crushing me all alone.
Bradley sighed and turned to the one screen he had been avoiding since he entered the morbid chamber. The screen which contained the face of the human he had loved, eyes frozen in a mask of terror and distress. His hollow eyes taking the sight in and letting it remind him of the promises he failed to keep, of the people he betrayed and he let himself get crippled momentarily by regret.
His greatest desire was to escape the clinging shadows of the underground facility and fulfill the dreams of his friends for them. For otherwise they would end up like him, rotting away as an empty shell in the pale room.
He knew though that he never could, if he tried, he would be replaced and he could not bare the thought of being responsible for the cycle to start again adding to the list of his sins.
So there he sat, in the small and morbid room, kept company by the dead and his regrets. Waiting to be used during the dead of night, then placed back into the basement. A hollow husk living to prevent anyone else falling into the same pit as he did.

The Clarity To His Sanity
Featured Couple: Lucifer & Marie
There were a lot of things going on as of late, but Lucifer’s wife was first and foremost on his mind. Her safety would always be his top concern.
Over the past few days, he’d been picking up a disturbance from her. She was getting better at keeping her thoughts on a down low, and he did his best not to pry. Being almost all-knowing sometimes wasn't all it was cracked up to be - not to mention it made for some boring conversations.
After leaving Tatum in Leon's capable hands, he made a trip to Hell to make sure everything was still running smoothly in his absence. That was when he began picking up on these strange sensations that were pouring from his wife. He wasted no time in finding her at their home.
Walking into the room to seeing nothing appeared out of place, he leaned his shoulder against the door’s facing.
"Something on your mind?" He wasted no time in coming right out with it. If something was troubling her, he wanted to know about it. "Been picking up these strange vibes from you the past few days." He attempted to make light of the matter as to not upset her. "Please don't tell me you're second-guessing things after the idea of being married to the devil himself set in?"
Marie turned around from her seat on the sofa and sat up on her knees to address her husband. By now she was used to his abrupt arrivals wherever she was at. When they were first friends, she’d nearly have heart attacks whenever he’d pop up without making a sound.
Decked out in sweats and socks, it was difficult not to feel horribly under dressed compared to Lucifer, who was drop dead gorgeous in anything he wore – or didn’t wear, for that matter.
“I’ve been weighing the pros and cons in my head for a number of years now,” she teased before grinning stupidly. Okay, she couldn’t do it. She couldn’t contain herself any longer. It was incredible how much she missed seeing this man in the flesh. The last time she saw him was when he rescued her and her team in Luna Bay, and then there were the brief phone calls in-between, and that was it. To have him home brought a swell of joy that burst, and she could no longer hold back.
Socks and sweat pants - it was nice seeing her taking it easy. Lucifer was overly aware of how his wife always tried to look her best for him. Always being dressed up with her hair done and make up on when she knew he was going to be around. To a degree it bothered him a little that she always thought she had to look her best for him. The archangel hadn't fallen for her clothing or none of the above. The way she sat before him right now - she was still as beautiful to him as the day he first laid eyes on her.
She used her agility to leap over the couch and run right up to Lucifer. Arms were thrown around him and she buried her face into his chest as she embraced him. Nothing made her more complete than being able to touch him, to smell him, to hear his voice – everything he embodied, whether it be good or bad, she absolutely wanted to protect. Those thoughts played out so vividly in her mind that it could be seen from space – if such a thing were possible.
‘I want to protect you like you protect me and Luke. I need to know how to be there for you if you need me.’
He greeted her with open arms when she practically leaped from the sofa and into his arms. Both arms wrapped around her frame and pulled her close. He hated being away from her for such long periods of time. That was the main reason he was working behind the scenes, to make it possible for him to be able to spend more time with her and Luke.
He was taking back a little from the confession that just seemed to pour from her all at once. "Is that what all this is about? Why you've been having this strange vibe to you the past few days?" Lucifer couldn't help but smile a little. "Do you not realize how much you've already done for me? In my darkest hour, you pulled me back from the edge - you gave my existence a meaning, a reason. You protected me and saved me from my own demons." Both hands laid on each side of her face, holding her just right so they could look into each other’s eyes.
Her eyes watered, taking in everything he said. Hearing him say such words made her heart skip a beat. It brought comfort to the nagging self-doubts that plagued her when he wasn’t around. In her youth, she accepted the fact that she’d be a single mom and that guys would rather skip town than hang around someone who had such emotional baggage – but not Lucifer. In a way, being with him and loving him made the thought of being with any other man, regardless of species, utterly revolting.
She thought about the other women in her life, ones who wielded vast powers that were so raw, so visually appealing, and so downright powerful – she needed to stop comparing herself to them and accept that being who she was, what she encompassed, was more than enough for her husband? Enough for herself?
Unable to resist, she ran her fingers through his long, shaggy hair, loving the way it framed his chiseled face perfectly. It didn’t matter if this was a vessel (albeit his true one) that he currently possessed, because she would love him no matter what body he used. It was who he was within, his core self, that she would love forever.
“Then,” she said at long last, her voice a low whisper as she reached up using her tiptoes to pepper his jaw and neck with kisses, “so be it. I’ll stop being so silly over this. I love you, Lucifer. You are my absolute everything.”
It humbled him in a lot of ways to see and know how much this woman cared about him. Never in his lifetime had he ever had someone care for him or to worry about his well-being. In all those long years, it angered him in knowing he was nothing more than a puppet having his strings pulled - but he lived with it, thinking he only needed himself. Then meeting her changed everything... she was the clarity to his insanity.
"I've never had a moment's doubt. I love you, Marie. I believe in you completely because you are my reason for life. You've bewitched me, body and soul, and I wouldn't want it any other way. Storm clouds may gather and stars may collide, but I'd walk Heaven and Hell for you. You're the best thing I never knew I needed." His thumbs brushed against the cheeks of her face until she had inched up on to her toes.
Maybe he just needed to remind her of just how much he loved her.
Within seconds, he had her pinned against the wall with his body, kissing her roughly, setting an almost demanding pace. His finger buried in the back of her hair, tugging at it slightly - just enough to draw her head back. Now his lips dropped away from her lips and took to her jawline. He left kisses and small bites down her skin on his way to her neck where he latched on, sucking and biting, leaving deep purple marks that would last for days.
Picking her up in his arms with legs around his waist to move the two of them to the bed. He laid her down on the bed and straddled her hips. Lucifer quickly pulled off her top then proceeded to push his button up shirt off of his broad shoulders and tore off his t-shirt. His hand made fast work of his belt and jeans then did the same with her sweat pants and the pair of panties she'd been wearing and tossed them all beside the bed - all but his belt.
"Put your hands above your head," he instructed with a grin.
High-strung on arousal and cheeks flushed, she shivered with delight as she slowly raised her hands up over her head, so thankful that they had bed posts. She couldn’t stop staring at how magnificent his body was sculpted. It was like seeing it for the very first time, so perfectly cut. Oh, how she wanted to run her hands along his chest and make a trail of kisses down his flat stomach, all the while touching that huge, thick, cock of his.
The marks he left on her neck throbbed almost in time with the sensation that grew between her own legs. It’d taken her a while to feel comfortable with her own body once she started sleeping with him. She hadn’t been as slender as either of her older twin sisters since before she became a mother, and since giving birth, she simply couldn’t shake off some of that extra weight gain. But the look and desire that ebbed from Lucifer every time they were alone like that reminded her that he thought she was perfect the way she was: mind, body, and soul.
“Please,” she begged, almost sounding breathless as her chest rose and fell with eager anticipation, her nipples rock hard for him. She was anxious to have him touch her all over again, to taste his tongue, to feel him inside of her, to be one with him. Never did she want something so badly as this breathtaking angel before her.
As soon as she raised her arms above her head like he'd instructed, he spoke again. "Don't move." A devilish smile rolled across his lips as he collected the belt from the bed and began strapping her hands to the headboard of the bed.
Leaning back, Lucifer admired his work while looking back and forth from her wrists to her eyes. "Damn, you're gorgeous." The mattress dipped as he moved to settle between spread legs - his large frame hovering over hers. Lowering himself down, he started out by kissing her deeply while his cool hand roamed her skin, feeling and touching every inch of her until they settled on her firm round breasts.
His mouth moved to her jawline, then along her neck, over the collarbone until he reached one of her breasts - taking one hard nipple into his mouth, sucking and biting it harshly. Then he moved to the other peppering it with the same attention he had showed the other.
Her eyes fluttered shut, followed by the moans that came out of her mouth. She arched her back and cried out when her nipples were on the delicious receiving end of both pleasure and pain. Out of instinct she wanted to grab his hair and twist the locks between her fingers, but her hands remained restrained. A mild mix of both impatience and desire clashed within her as he showered her body with more of his leisurely cadence. She threw her head back as she lifted her toned legs to wrap across his broad backside.
“Fuck,” she cried out hoarsely, her pussy practically throbbing and aching for him. She couldn’t believe how much she missed this man; no amount of self-pleasure could take the place of all he could do to her. Once again, she instinctively tried to make a grab for him, but only to be reminded of the binds that tied her hands. Words alone couldn’t describe what she wanted to do to him, of how she wanted to hear him make all sorts of erotic sounds, and knowing she was the reason behind it all.
Another grin rolled against his lips, feeling both times she had attempted to move her arms. HIs hand lowered trailing down the side on her thigh when it wrapped around his waist. Quickly his hand drew back and collided with her thigh.
"I don't remember telling you that you could move yet." His grin only grew wider. All of this... right here and now was about showing her just how much he worshiped everything about her. How he'd change not a single thing about her.
His lips drew back to hers with his kiss becoming more frantic and desperate. His hands slipped between her thighs, pushing them both down to settle on both sides of him, to spread her legs wide. His hands moved again, with one fisting into her hair while the other slid between them. Grabbing his cock, he pressed it against her folds, rubbing for a moment. Lucifer broke the kiss and rested his forehead against hers with eyes piercing hers. Smiling, he pushed him in slowly - almost painfully slow until he buried himself to the hilt.
After a moment, he pulled out all together and plunged back in. A pleasure moan drew from his lips being muffled by her own. His head dropped back down as he set a slow and steady pace.
"You feel so damn good.” He moaned out those words with his fist still tangled into her hair. His other arm was on the side of them, keeping him propped enough above her as to not crush her under his large frame.
The intense, aching need for him was felt the moment their eyes locked, when he gave her that nice crack against her thigh which elicited a sharp hiss of desire, and even more so when their bodies became one. She whimpered, then cried out over the complete connection they shared, loving the tight hold he had with her, the way he punished her, keeping her so close to him. It was overwhelming how damn good he felt as he moved inside her, sending wave after wave of absolute bliss up and down her body.
“Lucifer,” she whispered as she rolled her hips against his, clenched his cock, and relished over how he’d tap that delicious sweet spot in her core over and over again, which made her pleasure soar higher and higher. She dared not close her eyes, as she desperately needed to keep looking at him, to watch his own reaction to what they were doing together. This was a pleasant reminder that he loved her and that he’d always make her feel like the sexiest woman in his eyes.
“This…” she panted, then licked her lips, “I love this… I love YOU… fuck, baby, I missed this… fucking missed this so much!”
And rarely did she swear in such a manner, let alone drop the F bomb, but in moments like this, where her body was lost to his seduction, his touch, she couldn’t hold back. She would give absolutely anything and everything to protect her husband and make sure he was taken cared of in every sense of the word.
He was a little surprised hearing her drop the F bomb and it was apparent on his features. It even gave him a quick pause. He couldn't help but smile, because apparently, he was doing something completely right to have her speaking in the way she was. Oddly enough it spurred him on - wanting to hear more moans and praises falling from her sweet lips.
"I missed you too, baby." HIs lips dipped down to her collarbone, working to finish the mark he had started on earlier. It was probably a good thing her body healed as quickly as it did. A combination of teeth and cold breath beat against her skin with every thrust of his hips.
His slow and steady pace soon changed - his thrusts becoming harder and faster, more demanding. Every couple of thrusts caused him to moan and because of that, he started thrusting even harder. His hand let go of her hair to reach up and untangle her wrists from his belt. Lucifer groaned loudly, returning his hand to fist up in her hair tightly with eyes locking on hers. His hips now pounding into her so hard the sound of his of skin slapping together was almost over taking his moans of pleasure.
As soon as she was freed, her arms snaked around his neck and she crushed her mouth against his. One set of fingers eagerly raked through his tousled hair, grabbing and tugging with matched ferocity, as the other set dragged themselves down his powerful backside, hard enough to leave red, wet welts. If he’d been human, he would’ve been in serious trouble and he certainly wouldn’t have been able to heal himself. Her legs tightened around his waist as he continued to slam into her with such primal need.
“So… So good…!” she whispered against his mouth, her tongue furiously dancing with his. “Fuck, I’m almost… I’m gonna cum!”
That searing, swelling pleasure wasn’t going to stop. Her moans mingled with his, creating harmonious sounds that filled the room along with the squeaks of the bed. She was going to fall apart, swept in a hot white sensation. Seconds later, she did just that. Still refusing to look away, her eyes turned hazy, and she let out a rasping groan, as her entire body was racked with a powerful orgasm.
The burning path her nails left against his back had him growling against her lips. He returned the kiss roughly as he kept up his brutal pace - desperately wanting to every little sound he could elicit from her lips.
Her words sent a wave of heat straight to his core. He knew he wouldn't last much longer, but he was determined to make sure she was fully satisfied before he gave himself over. Lucifer changed his angle just slightly so that with each thrust he could hit that little sweat spot head on. Feeling her inner walls pulsating around him was pure ecstasy all in its own. The way her eyes locked on his - the way neither of them could take their eyes away from the other for not even a second - mixed with all the dirty talk he'd drawn from her... it was too much.
He came with a loud groan but refused to stop thrusting his hips until she had road her orgasm out to its fullest. He was almost breathless as he spilled his warm seed deep within her throbbing walls. Once they were both completely spent, his hips came to rest. His body lowered with his elbow kept him hovered about her just enough not to crush her.
"You're fucking amazing." A ragged breath fell from him.
She was panting heavily as she managed to caress the side of his face with the same hand that drew blood from his back. Her touch was so tender, so loving. Feeling that warm stickiness between her thighs made her smile. Though he wasn’t a wolf, it was his way of marking her. No other wolf (or male, rather) would be foolish enough to attempt to entice her, as she belonged to him and only him.
“You… you certainly put me… in my place…” she breathed, and it was followed with a warm, gentle smile. She couldn’t completely put down her insecurities, as it led her to getting nailed like she was a porn star. Only she wasn’t with a stranger or an actor, but with the man she loved; having that reassurance with him was always nice. Being told, and knowing, she was loved by Lucifer was more than enough to make her feel like the most powerful woman on earth.
He kissed her once more, only time gently and passionately. Never did he want her to have fears or doubts that she wasn't good enough for him. Never did he want her to think she had to be something more than what she was for him. She was amazingly perfect just the way she was.
Her words caused him to crack a laugh as he finally withdrew from inside her and crashed over on to the bed beside her. An overly stupid and cocky grin touched his lips.
"Well, in my defense - every now and then you do need a little reminder," he teased, stretching out one of his arms so that his hand could smooth down the flat of her stomach. "Next time I might have to pull out the cuffs." He teased again before rolling over on to his side to inch up close against her body.
In the time he was able to spend with her, he enjoyed being as close to her as he could.

The five technical challenges Cerebras overcame in building the first trillion transistor chip
Superlatives abound at Cerebras, the until-today stealthy next-generation silicon chip company looking to make training a deep learning model as quick as buying toothpaste from Amazon. Launching after almost three years of quiet development, Cerebras introduced its new chip today — and it is a doozy. The “Wafer Scale Engine” is 1.2 trillion transistors (the most ever), 46,225 square millimeters (the largest ever), and includes 18 gigabytes of on-chip memory (the most of any chip on the market today) and 400,000 processing cores (guess the superlative).
Cerebras’ Wafer Scale Engine is larger than a typical Mac keyboard (via Cerebras Systems)
It’s made a big splash here at Stanford University at the Hot Chips conference, one of the silicon industry’s big confabs for product introductions and roadmaps, with various levels of oohs and aahs among attendees. You can read more about the chip from Tiernan Ray at Fortune and read the white paper from Cerebras itself.
Superlatives aside though, the technical challenges that Cerebras had to overcome to reach this milestone I think is the more interesting story here. I sat down with founder and CEO Andrew Feldman this afternoon to discuss what his 173 engineers have been building quietly just down the street here these past few years with $112 million in venture capital funding from Benchmark and others.
Going big means nothing but challenges
First, a quick background on how the chips that power your phones and computers get made. Fabs like TSMC take standard-sized silicon wafers and divide them into individual chips by using light to etch the transistors into the chip. Wafers are circles and chips are squares, and so there is some basic geometry involved in subdividing that circle into a clear array of individual chips.
One big challenge in this lithography process is that errors can creep into the manufacturing process, requiring extensive testing to verify quality and forcing fabs to throw away poorly performing chips. The smaller and more compact the chip, the less likely any individual chip will be inoperative, and the higher the yield for the fab. Higher yield equals higher profits.
Cerebras throws out the idea of etching a bunch of individual chips onto a single wafer in lieu of just using the whole wafer itself as one gigantic chip. That allows all of those individual cores to connect with one another directly vastly speeding up the critical feedback loops used in deep learning algorithms — but comes at the cost of huge manufacturing and design challenges to create and manage these chips.
Cerebras’ technical architecture and design was led by co-founder Sean Lie. Feldman and Lie worked together on a previous startup called SeaMicro, which sold to AMD in 2012 for $334 million. (Via Cerebras Systems)
The first challenge the team ran into according to Feldman was handling communication across the “scribe lines.” While Cerebras chip encompasses a full wafer, today’s lithography equipment still has to act like there are individual chips being etched into the silicon wafer. So the company had to invent new techniques to allow each of those individual chips to communicate with each other across the whole wafer. Working with TSMC, they not only invented new channels for communication, but also had to write new software to handle chips with trillion plus transistors.
The second challenge was yield. With a chip covering an entire silicon wafer, a single imperfection in the etching of that wafer could render the entire chip inoperative. This has been the block for decades on whole wafer technology: due to the laws of physics, it is essentially impossible to etch a trillion transistors with perfect accuracy repeatedly.
Cerebras approached the problem using redundancy by adding extra cores throughout the chip that would be used as backup in the event that an error appeared in that core’s neighborhood on the wafer. “You have to hold only 1%, 1.5% of these guys aside,” Feldman explained to me. Leaving extra cores allows the chip to essentially self-heal, routing around the lithography error and making a whole wafer silicon chip viable.
Entering uncharted territory in chip design
Those first two challenges — communicating across the scribe lines between chips and handling yield — have flummoxed chip designers studying whole wafer chips for decades. But they were known problems, and Feldman said that they were actually easier to solve that expected by re-approaching them using modern tools.
He likens the challenge though to climbing Mount Everest. “It’s like the first set of guys failed to climb Mount Everest, they said, ‘Shit, that first part is really hard.’ And then the next set came along and said ‘That shit was nothing. That last hundred yards, that’s a problem.’”
And indeed, the toughest challenges according to Feldman for Cerebras were the next three, since no other chip designer had gotten past the scribe line communication and yield challenges to actually find what happened next.
The third challenge Cerebras confronted was handling thermal expansion. Chips get extremely hot in operation, but different materials expand at different rates. That means the connectors tethering a chip to its motherboard also need to thermally expand at precisely the same rate lest cracks develop between the two.
Feldman said that “How do you get a connector that can withstand [that]? Nobody had ever done that before, [and so] we had to invent a material. So we have PhDs in material science, [and] we had to invent a material that could absorb some of that difference.”
Once a chip is manufactured, it needs to be tested and packaged for shipment to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) who add the chips into the products used by end customers (whether data centers or consumer laptops). There is a challenge though: absolutely nothing on the market is designed to handle a whole-wafer chip.
Cerebras designed its own testing and packaging system to handle its chip (Via Cerebras Systems)
“How on earth do you package it? Well, the answer is you invent a lot of shit. That is the truth. Nobody had a printed circuit board this size. Nobody had connectors. Nobody had a cold plate. Nobody had tools. Nobody had tools to align them. Nobody had tools to handle them. Nobody had any software to test,” Feldman explained. “And so we have designed this whole manufacturing flow, because nobody has ever done it.” Cerebras’ technology is much more than just the chip it sells — it also includes all of the associated machinery required to actually manufacture and package those chips.
Finally, all that processing power in one chip requires immense power and cooling. Cerebras’ chip uses 15 kilowatts of power to operate — a prodigious amount of power for an individual chip, although relatively comparable to a modern-sized AI cluster. All that power also needs to be cooled, and Cerebras had to design a new way to deliver both for such a large chip.
It essentially approached the problem by turning the chip on its side, in what Feldman called “using the Z-dimension.” The idea was that rather than trying to move power and cooling horizontally across the chip as is traditional, power and cooling are delivered vertically at all points across the chip, ensuring even and consistent access to both.
And so, those were the next three challenges — thermal expansion, packaging, and power/cooling — that the company has worked around-the-clock to deliver these past few years.
From theory to reality
Cerebras has a demo chip (I saw one, and yes, it is roughly the size of my head), and it has started to deliver prototypes to customers according to reports. The big challenge though as with all new chips is scaling production to meet customer demand.
For Cerebras, the situation is a bit unusual. Since it places so much computing power on one wafer, customers don’t necessarily need to buy dozens or hundreds of chips and stitch them together to create a compute cluster. Instead, they may only need a handful of Cerebras chips for their deep-learning needs. The company’s next major phase is to reach scale and ensure a steady delivery of its chips, which it packages as a whole system “appliance” that also includes its proprietary cooling technology.
Expect to hear more details of Cerebras technology in the coming months, particularly as the fight over the future of deep learning processing workflows continues to heat up.

That allows all of those individual cores to connect with one another directly — vastly speeding up the critical feedback loops used in deep learning algorithms — but comes at the cost of huge manufacturing and design challenges to create and manage these chips.
China’s fast-paced growth has resulted in it being one of the most extremely flexible nations in terms of technological integration into existing infrastructure. With its relatively newer institutions and organizations, China can easily adapt existing infrastructure around current and potentially future technologies. Because of the rise of automated vehicles and their specific criteria, many have wondered how to properly establish specific infrastructure to support such technology. This is where China has an opportunity to thrive: Its more robust mechanisms for change have the capability to implement such technology on a large-scale, enabling smart highway and roads as the baseline for future infrastructure projects worldwide.
What is a smart highway, and why do we need them?
There are many definitions for the term “smart highway,” but the general consensus is that this type of roadway will allow for technological integration into current transportation roadways, including, but not limited to, functions such as generating power through solar panels, integration with self-driving cars and sensors and structural maintenance monitoring systems. Smart highways have the opportunity to turn from serving a singular purpose in being the backbone of various countries’ transportation systems to providing additional value added through the generation of power, safety feature implementation and the gathering of key data points for both drivers and transportation administrators.
In the wake of incidents such as the death of a driver in a Tesla on Autopilot mode, as well as the death of a pedestrian during an Uber self-driving pilot program, smart highways would allow for improved safety mechanisms. Automated vehicles, smart highway sensors and software programs would have increased capability to identify and stop incidents as they occur, allowing real-time feedback to enable safety features to prevent, or at least mitigate, any injury or harm to drivers. Instead of simple commands issued to the driver, which are still prone to human error, a smart highway would enable smart vehicles to work with sensors and other roadside-integrated technologies to create tools such as full-stop fail-safes in the event of an incapacitated driver.
The rise of automated vehicles throughout the world has also given rise to the idea of smart highways.
Additionally, world power consumption is on the rise, with energy demand being projected to increase by more than 25 percent by 2040. On the same note, fossil fuel consumption will also decrease, increasing the need for sources of renewable energy. Smart highways will be able to ensure full utilization of the millions of miles of roadways across the globe, dual-utilizing these vast spaces to produce energy to power not only highway-specific infrastructure, but also potentially nearby areas, such as towns, cities and even power plants. Smart highways represent an opportunity for sustainable energy growth, allowing power generation for key infrastructure, as well as potentially even charging electric vehicles as they drive.
Data aggregates collected from smart highways would also be very useful in urban planning, allowing for increased travel efficiency as well as decreased environmental pollution from vehicles. One potential example of smart highways utilized to produce results would be engineers utilizing real-time data to analyze traffic flow in a specific area in relation to lane mergers and freeway exits, optimizing roadways to ensure the least amount of time a car is stopped at any specific traffic choke point.
With the advent of automated vehicles and other smart technologies, smart highways are simply necessitated to ensure the full integration and use of such innovation. These potentially life-saving tools can be utilized to increase driver and pedestrian safety, increase clean energy consumption and promote sustainability — and even help engineers with urban, road and traffic planning.
Are there any projects that are close to being implemented for smart highways?
There have been many attempts to create parts of smart highways, with specific efforts focusing on solar roads and smart traffic infrastructure projects. However, many of these efforts have been met with mixed results, running into a variety of issues that include, but are not limited to, true power efficiency and monetary cost.
In October 2014, the Netherlands established the SolaRoad pilot project, creating a 70-meter stretch of bike path. This project was met with resounding success, producing nearly 10,000 kWh in its first year. More projects are being developed off this specific one, moving to more heavy traffic areas for testing in 2019. However, this project is specifically focused on developing solar roads, and not fully integrated solar highways, in order to increase renewable energy consumption in the area.
In September 2016, Idaho-based Solar Roadways built a nearly 14-square meter roadway in Sandypoint, Idaho. However, Solar Roadways’ own report to the U.S. Department of Transportation noted how its panels “used about one-third of the electricity they generate to power their built-in LEDs,” drastically affecting efficiency of energy created, generating a mere 52.39 kWhs in six months. This has affected other solar roadway development in the United States, halting a planned 2017 Missouri solar road project near Conway, due to what Solar Roadways calls “a variety of complex red tape factors.” This project has been a cause of concern for many because of its high costs and relatively low efficiency factors in terms of energy production.
December 2016 saw what began as a Wattway, Hannah Solar and Georgia Department of Transportation-sponsored 50-square meter roadway evolving into The Ray. At nearly 30 kilometers on I-85 in Troup County, Georgia, The Ray has become one of the most comprehensive smart highways today, encompassing a solar-powered vehicle charging station, tire-safety check station and the aforementioned solar road.
Also, in December 2016, France opened a roughly 1 km solar road in partnership with French company Colas. Unfortunately, this road has not lived up to expectations, generating only 409 kWh of energy per day as opposed to an original estimate of 17,963 kWh per day, costing the French government millions of Euros to install and maintain, with 5 percent of the solar panels already requiring replacement.
As one can see, portions of smart highways have been met with limited success throughout the world. Cost, bureaucratic interference, true energy output and sustainability are just some of the many concerns that can potentially drive or tank such projects.
Why China: infrastructure expertise, quick implementation and robust manufacturing capabilities
China’s unique nature as a rising nation seeking status as a developed one gives it immense opportunity to implement smart technologies. With a mobile-first mindset helping to carry internet to hundreds of millions of people without desktop computers, China has shown the capability to implement technology quickly and relatively efficiently. Therefore, China is the most likely place for the world’s first true smart roadways because of its unique infrastructure environment, relatively flexible bureaucracy in terms of technological implementation, as well as the robust nature of manufacturing and supply chain refinement in China.
Opening in December 2017, the largest stretch of solar road currently lies in eastern China’s Shandong province, created by Pavenergy and Qilu Transportation, with an area of 5,875 square meters. In this specific instance, China’s more rigid concrete-based roads allow for a better placement of thin solar cells, as opposed to the asphalt-based American highway system. This unique infrastructure environment allows for the easier implementation of solar technologies on such concrete-based roads.
Additionally, the Chinese are well-versed and experienced in traditional road construction, building China’s expansive expressways, as well as a lot of road infrastructure in Latin America and Africa. This is only added on to by China’s reputation as a very expeditious infrastructure builder, with Chinese companies setting records, such as building a 57-story skyscraper in 19 days and a railway station in just 9 hours. These unique infrastructure traits make China the perfect ground to build the world’s first true super highway.
China’s manufacturing might is also a key indicator of success in terms of implementation of a smart highway.
China’s relatively flexible bureaucracy, specific to technological implementation and innovation, also helps in supporting the argument of the world’s first superhighway being in China. With China clearly dominating the mobile-first environment — with 1.1 billion mobile internet subscriptions in 2017 (nearly twice the amount of the U.S. at the time) — Chinese consumers actually purchase more through mobile phones than computers, with the Chinese government playing an active role to establish infrastructure to support mobile-first technologies.
In the case of drones, China’s Civil Aviation Authority released a clear set of federal guidelines and regulations governing their use in 2016. In contrast, many Western nations have very mixed rules when it comes to drone use, with federal, state, county and municipal agencies often implementing confusing and sometimes even contrasting rules. These two examples showcase how China is very quick to implement technology throughout its country, and how its government is very forward-leaning and early adopting in this specific respect.
China’s manufacturing might is also a key indicator of success in terms of implementation of a smart highway. China’s very strong manufacturing power has catapulted it into success, from constructing simple consumer goods, to being the premier assembler of iPhones, and now to the development of very inexpensive and efficient solar panels. China has refined its supply chain process immensely well, to the point where Chinese factories are optimized from start to finish, from having the initial components of specific products mere kilometers from one another, to having the ability to ship millions of packages every day. This overwhelming efficiency has led to a key component of smart roadways being China’s premier business, with China becoming the manufacturer for roughly 70 percent of all solar panels today.
Additionally, China leads the world in solar power production, installing 34.5 gigawatts of new solar energy capacity in the first nine months of 2018 alone, while consisting of 53 percent of all solar installations in 2017 and more than 50 percent of all global installations in 2016. This heavy industrial development of solar panels within China is a huge benefit for Chinese solar roadways, allowing localized firms to quickly manufacture and implement solar roadways, and, to a further extent, smart highways. With an unrivaled manufacturing capacity and a very well-developed supply chain, China represents the most likely place for the world’s first true smart highway.
All in all, China is not only the most likely place, but the premier environment, for the world’s first smart roadway because of its unique infrastructure environment, fast-paced technology implementation standards and dominance in global manufacturing and supply chain.
Conclusion
The rise of automated vehicles throughout the world has also given rise to the idea of smart highways, encompassing all sorts of technologies such as sensors, solar panels and software to create a safer and more efficient driving environment. While nations such as Dubai have announced plans to develop and integrate existing smart technologies into their traffic systems, China is one of the first, if not the first, to announce plans to build a projected 161 kilometer-long smart road in its eastern Zhejiang province, integrating safety features to support autonomous driving tracked with sensors, an Internet-of-Vehicles system and solar panels.
Chinese scientists also continue to innovate in the solar sector, a key component of smart highways, achieving a record 17.3 percent power conversion efficiency rate on organic solar cells. Therefore, we can only conclude that the world’s first true smart highway will be in China, leading the way to fully integrate smart technology with current traffic infrastructure.

All in all, China is not only the most likely place, but the premier environment, for the worlds first smart roadway because of its unique infrastructure environment, fast-paced technology implementation standards and dominance in global manufacturing and supply chain.

Why is my car insurance so much higher than my female counter part?
This is such bullsh*t. I am 24 have had 0 accidents and 0 tickets. I am moving to another state and my Fing insurance is like $150 month. Then I talked to a female coworker my age with the same type of car and she has 2 speeding tickets her insurance is $137 a month. WTF? It is a known fact that almost all women are horrible drivers. Sure I guess males my age may do more reckless things but at least we have some Fing common sense. Women in todays society seem to lack this. Because they are never held accountable for any of their actions. O sweety you drank a fifth last night and banged some fat nasty guy well its not your fault its the guys fault. I'm looking to get a new motorbike in January and am looking at quotes online. Where it says where is the bike kept overnight I have put: on a public road. Then where it says Address where bike is kept overnight I have put my home address. However I want to take it too uni and that's obviously a different address, but it won't let you have two. I have put on the form that my current address is my home rather than uni. Do I need to tell them that it's going to be at uni with or not because it'll be at both places for extended periods of time? It's also 400 more expensive to put address as uni - though cost isn't the problem just confused. thanks. Sorry if it was confusing, if you can't understand then I'll try and make it clearer.""

Primary and Secondary Health Insurance?
This has been a big complication for a few months, but back in October of 2008, I had a physical exam and my provider billed, what I assumed at the time, my primary insurance company (Horizon NJ Health). However, two years later, Horizon took back that money and my provider has been billing me for that physical back in 2008. I called Horizon and apparently they took back the money because I had another health insurance, and Horizon was no longer my primary. I had not known about my other health insurance company, Aetna student health care, since they never gave me any information or membership details, and I was automatically enrolled for it when I entered my university. When I contacted Aetna, they told me that they weren't the primary insurance company because they were just student health care. After several phone calls back and forth between Aetna and Horizon... I STILL haven't figured out who my primary insurance company is since they both claim to be the secondary insurance (and they seem to have endless reasons why the other is primary). I contacted my provider and asked them who they have listed as my primary, and they seem to be clueless about it too (when I spoke to the receptionist and asked, they kinda changed the topic). Is it possible to have two secondary insurance? If not, who should be my primary insurance? If Horizon is my primary, doesn't that mean they shouldn't have taken the money back for the physical exam?""

Renters' insurance...yes or no?
I recently moved into an apartment and am contemplating renters' insurance. I have a few questions before deciding on whether to purchase a policy or not. First, is it worth it? The idea seems similar to buying an extended protection plan for a product; yes, the protection plan is cheap, but what are the odds that the product will actually break during the 1-year timeframe? Every item in which I have ever purchased an extended protection plan (TVs, computers, furniture, appliances) has never malfunctioned/broken. Basically, I paid that money to cover myself in the event of something happening, but nothing ever did happen to any of those items. I would say that I've thrown away approximately $1000 over the years on various protection plans. Second, when I am assessing my personal property value, should I overestimate the actual value of my belongings, or provide a more accurate estimate? Do insurance companies require any visual proof of items you own? I know there are more pros than cons to renters' insurance, but I wanted everyone's opinions on whether renters' insurance is a good buy. Thanks.""

Does A Dentist Have To Pay Insurance?
I have heard that a doctor has to pay for insurance, not health insurance, but the insurance to make sure if there is something wrong (like wrong treatment for patients, causing death..) and the insurance company will pay for the patient. And that insurance costs a lot per year, someone told me it must be about 1 million.. I want to become a dentist, which is somehow like a doctor.. So my question is whether dentist has to pay that insurance like doctor??""

""I was charged dui + my insurance company doesn't know, should I notify them for $1700 coverage for road work?""
I was in an accident involving a highway railing but no other automobiles except my own. This was six months ago. My insurance company was not notified and as of now has no information regarding my accident or dui. I totaled my car and have gladly stopped driving as I live in a city and can bike, walk and ride public transportation. My question regards an outstanding bill I have for $1,700 to the state highways for repair to the railing I hit. Should I pay out of pocket? or file an insurance claim and have it covered as part of my property damage liability? I have heard the insurance company would increase my insurance rate for 3 years, but I don't plan on having a car anyway. I could use the $1700, however, I've come away clean thus far and am reluctant to bring this to my insurance company's attention if I don't have to, though it may be just a matter of time before the insurance company learns of the accident anyway. I have moved to a different state and have a different drivers license and plan on discontinuing my insurance at the end of the month when the policy runs out.""

Motorcycle cost monthly?
Hey guys, I have some questions for you. I am 17 years old, and want to buy my first motorcycle (supermoto). I think I have a good idea on what it costs, but i'm just unsure. First off, i'll need to get my license. What'll that cost me? (California). I do have a car license, so getting the motorcycle license should be short and sweet, but i dont know. secondly, i'm going to get some motorcycle gear. I figure I'll be in 500$ with both license and gear (nice used leathers probably). Then i am going to get the bike which costs $4000. Being a supermoto, the insurance should be cheaper right? DRZ400sm if that helps. So between monthly payments and insurance, I should be in... 200$ a month? then gas, social life, blah blah. What do you think I need to be making monthly to make this happen. I bring in 500$ a month, and have 600$ in the bank as of now.""

What do you like most about tying health insurance to employment?
Isn't it a good way to keep employees in line? I mean, well, if you're not happy here, you can always quit and do something you like, but your COBRA insurance will eventually run out and you'll either need to find another job with benefits, not necessarily the job you want, so it looks like you're sticking around for some time.....no freelancing or working two part-time jobs you like for you! I like this system because it keeps my employees from quitting, particularly the ones with pre-existing conditions or family members with pre-existing conditions. I can get what I want out of them by using the health-care lasso ( go ahead and quit, but try seeing how much a private policy will cost you if you're lucky enough to get accepted with what you've got! ), plus there is no need to worry about competition from freelancers or small businesses. I like tying benefits to employment because as an employer I have a way of keeping my employees in line. If they act up or talk about branching out into something else, I just have to remind them of where they get their affordable benefits and how they would lose this corporate pool if they were to go out on their own, work for a small business without benefits, work freelance or go back to school full time. Keeps my workforce dedicated.""

18 year old just trying to find health insurance...?
My mom retired last year and my parents decided that without the benefits, it was too expensive for me to be on their health insurance plan (it would have been ~$750 a month). I've been without insurance since August. I just turned 18 yesterday. I live in Connecticut and my parents are basically being lazy about it and not helping at all... even though I have an entire LIST of things I need to get checked out/surgery/medications, including wisdom teeth surgery (dental insurance, yay!!!!!) and I can't do ANY of it until I have insurance. I seriously have NO idea what to do and my parents procrastinate like crazy and I can't take being uninsured anymore. What do I do?!""
Are Americans excited about brand new affordable 2014 health insurance plans?
Plans where you pay $610 per month premium for a plan with a deductible of $6,000 dollars before you see any insurance payments So unless you have medical costs above $6,000 you will pay everything yourself in addition to $610 a month as well Are you used to this level of sharing in the cost of your healthcare? So if you see your doctor because you think you might have the flu: $375 You buy some anti-biotic: $450 Hospital night: $6,500 per night Physician MRI: $3,750 Plus every month: $610/month""

My Car Insurance won't pay for my car accident?
I Totaled my 2000 ford mustang gt at an intersection, it was my fault. I ran into a car, and that car hit the car in front of him as a result. So technically i was responsible for damages of 2 cars. I only had liability so i knew my car wouldn't be fixed. But now my insurance company said that my payment for that month was processed the day after my accident, so i wasn't insured on the day of the accident. I just found this out, and i want to know what will happen now that my insurance wont pay for the damages? will the other people's insurance sue me? All answers are appreciated! Thanks!""
