I do not think my move to North Carolina is going well.

There are more bad things than good things living with Cameron's mom.

It is insanely hot.

I am not writing as expected.

I am not feeling as expected--I thought I would feel relaxed. I thought I would have purpose. Instead, I feel alone. Oh, how alone I feel. Being surrounded by a family who does not want you unless you perform accordingly is dreadful. (Though not much different from my family. Unfortunately, I do not have the familial tie, love, or commitment with Cameron's family making any and all acts of engagement difficult.)

I upset easily.

Normal activity exhausts me.

Restful sleep alludes me.

Cameron and I are "fighting" more. They are not fights, but rather emotionally draining conversations about how my transition is hard for her.

Unfortunately, I have to (can) look at all of these bullet points through different eyes:

Marina is drinking heavily. She is going through an entire $60 bottle of Jack Daniels every 3-5 days. (Not counting the Vodka...) Her behavior is erratic and concerning. Her dependence on and unrequited obsession with Andy only seems to grow despite the cross-country distance. I find her desperation to connect with Christian and Cole unattractive. Especially compared to her disinterest in connecting with Cameron, her daughter who wants connection. There appears to be trouble in her relationship with Lonnie; such a quick entanglement and ensuing fallout further demonstrates her inability to maintain relationships. She is not capable of giving me what she advertised or what I had hoped for. And that is not my fault. Advice from yours truly: Wait until everyone is asleep. Tiptoe upstairs with your freshly brewed green tea and your girlfriend's homemade sugar cookies. Dig out your best stationary. Light a black candle for light and protection. Put on your big noise cancelling headphones. Outline your misgivings, your expectations, and your hurt. Commit such emotion to paper in pencil in case the tide changes (because it will). Include your best wishes; your hopes for a relationship in the near future. Fold the paper nicely, making sure not to smear your intentions. Tuck into its forever home, seal with a lick of indifference, and leave it somewhere pretty. Then, let it be.

Thisclose to finding Yoojung. If only you hadn’t been so careless with the red notebook while at Fantagio HQ a couple days ago, you probably could’ve been fucking Yoojung again by now. Instead, Sei is probably laughing in the comfort of a chilled room while you run around the city trying to find her. Luckily, a nondescript building shadows over you. It’s the building. Or at least Google Maps says it is. What matters is the brief relief it provides from the Seoul summer sun. You check the back of Sei’s letter again just to be sure.

This is definitely the right place.

Even though the words are already committed to memory, you read the mysterious note for the umpteenth time in hopes of unlocking some hidden meaning:

Heard you were looking for Yoojung, too bad I have her notebook now :) Don’t worry, I haven’t told her yet. I’m willing to give it back to you… for a price. You’ll have to find me first though ㅋㅋㅋ I’ll be at one of the three locations written on the back of this letter on Thursday afternoon. And you better hurry, I won’t be there all day. You’ll get your notebook once I’m satisfied ;)

One thing sticks out in the letter: “once I’m satisfied”. If past experiences are any indication, then it seems the horniness of these Weki Meki girls is just on another level. Or at least that’s how it reads.

Inside, the smell of dental offices is almost undeniable. It isn’t just the fluoride and latex, though. Further down empty hallways, there’s an insurance company office, a tech startup workspace, and even a small coffee shop. You reach the third floor, letters and numbers on every door you pass. 3A, 3B, then finally 3C—the first address Sei had provided in her letter.

You turn the doorknob, slowly pushing the door open. A mirror-filled wall looks out towards a window. Various yoga apparatuses fill the room. The lone woman in there stands atop one of the apparatuses, one leg swinging like a pendulum as her toned butt greets you through her yoga pants. It definitely isn’t Sei. Not with that ass.

This isn't the right location.

“Excuse me, is Sei here?” She steps off the table and turns toward you—it’s Rina.

“Oppa, is that you?” Rina calls out with squinted eyes.

Oppa? The fact she’s using this level of familiarity seems a little strange.

“Oh my gosh, it is! Oppa, it’s me! Kang Soeun!” The sound of her name tickles your ears and overloads your brain with forgotten memories from middle school. The overheating of processing power spreads across your entire body and makes your skin feel fuzzy. Cheek muscles start to tense when the realization finally hits. Of course. Who could forget a childhood crush?

She runs up to hug you, her pillowy breasts squishing against your body. Despite her sticky yoga skin, she embraces you tightly. Her nipples noticeably protrude through her top as they plunge into your chest. Perfume tickles your nose with rose oil, mint, and vanilla, an almost forgotten scent that starts to become familiar again. It feels like a lifetime ago.

“Soeun! Wow! I almost didn’t recognize you! Look at you, all grown up and famous now! You look great!”

“What are you doing here, oppa?”

“It’s a whole story. I’ve been trying to return a notebook that Yoojung misplaced. But then Sei stole it from me and is leading me on this wild goose chase to get it back.”

Her jaw drops in disbelief. “You’re bus guy?”

You shrug. “So I guess Yoojung has been telling everyone about me, huh? What has she been saying?”

“I mean, she told us about how she lost her notebook after some crazy bus sex she had one night, but I didn’t know you were bus guy, oppa.”

She sits on the nearest yoga apparatus and you take a seat next to her. There’s just so much to catch up on; Yoojung and Sei can wait for now.

“Hey, let me ask you something,” you say, “what is it with the rest of your group members? They all wanna have sex with me for some reason. I mean, I’m not complaining, it’s just… out of the ordinary. I mean, I’m good looking, but I’m not ‘everyone-wants-to-fuck-me-on-the-spot’ good looking.”

Soeun stifles an awkward giggle. “Have you ever wondered why Weki Meki’s greeting is ‘Let’s get crazy’?” She continues, “It’s because of Yoojung unnie. She makes so many sexual advances on anything that moves, including us. And she’s not shy about it, either. She's crazy. It must’ve rubbed off on the other unnies.”

“Oh. Has Yoojung ever made a move on you?” An imaginary steamy Yoojung/Soeun X-rated romance starts to form in your head:

It’s a cold, lonely night in the dorm. The heater is broken and there’s only one blanket on the comfy couch. It’s just barely big enough for two bodies if they huddle together. Yoojung invites Soeun under the blankets to avoid freezing.

“The blanket is too small, you’ll have to sit on my lap if you wanna get warm,” the tinier Yoojung says to Soeun. She does just that, unaware Yoojung is completely naked under the covers. Soeun lets it happen anyway.

Then, the sex scene of the movie they’re watching plays. Yoojung’s too horny to not do anything about Soeun just casually sitting on her naked lap. She creeps her fingers into Soeun’s shorts, shoving them against Soeun’s clit as Soeun lets out a stifled moan that syncs with the sex scene they’re watching.

“Ugh, unnie!” Soeun yelps, ripping the blanket off their bodies. “Forget the blanket, fuck some warmth into me instead!”

You snap out of your fantasy, noticing Soeun about to answer. It’s probably for the best. The fantasy doesn’t even sound that good in your head; the story makes no sense. Perhaps Soeun has a better story to tell.

She hops off the table and continues her stretches on the floor, unaffected by your forwardness. “Of course, but I try to stay away from that; I’m not really into her in that way. She’ll ask for birthday kisses on the lips which is the most I’ll do with Yoojung unnie. She knows not to push it too far with me, but she bosses the other members around like they’re her play toys. She’s especially fond of our maknae Lucy.”

It’s refreshingly surprising to hear how open and willing she is to answer deeply personal questions, but a door, once opened, may be stepped through in either direction.

“How many of my group mates have you… you know… so far...” Soeun stammers, too shy to complete a coherent question. There’s a mixed look of curiosity and shame expressed on her face as she asks. It feels weird to answer, but you return the favor of honesty.

“Uh, Yoojung, Elly, Doyeon, Suyeon, which makes… 4?” you answer.

“Oh, that’s good.” Soeun’s shoulders drop with a sharp exhalation.

“Huh? Why is that good?”

She laughs, but Soeun’s shoulders tense up again. “Sorry, force of habit. I meant...” she trails off.

A palpable awkwardness fills the room before Soeun tries to change the subject.

“Anyway, how are you, oppa? I haven’t seen you since you left to study abroad after middle school.”

Soeun continues stretching in stunned amazement, carefully listening to the countless stories of studying abroad, coming back to work in Korea, and everything in between. She seems genuinely happy to see you after having not seen you in years. 30 minutes pass before reminiscing about the days you spent in middle school together.

Soeun jumps up from her standing forward bend pose as she recalls a memory of her own, interrupting you and playfully slapping you on the arm.

“Oh my God, oppa! Do you remember, I used to have such a huge crush on you back in middle school!”

You let out a slight chuckle. “Yeah, I remember,” you say, but you let her continue the story anyway.

“There was that one mean girl who used to pick on me at school, do you remember? She tripped me in the hall one day and started calling me ugly and kept pushing me around. And then here comes the new kid, not caring about social hierarchy and standing up for the unpopular girl. I used to come eat with you every week after that.”

“Yeah, and you would always tell me, ‘Oppa! Be my boyfriend!’ and you’d grab my arm and walk with me to class.”

Soeun beams. “And do you remember what you’d always tell me when I asked you to be my boyfriend?”

“I’d say, ‘Buy me Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and I’ll think about it.’”

“Yeah! I had to look up what that was! And you knew I couldn’t get it either. They’re so hard to find in Korea. You and your Western palate.” The seat cushion sinks next to you when she sits again. Her arm grazes yours, and in that moment, Soeun’s gaze pierces your soul with deep affection. There’s a slight pause as that deep affection is tainted with a hint of sadness. “Then you left that summer to study abroad, but I secretly knew it was so you could eat all the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.”

She tries to sell a fake smile to go along with the joke she used as a coping mechanism, but no one is buying it. Even after all these years, Soeun still wears her heart on her sleeve.

“Well, I’m just glad you're back,” Soeun says, her head now gently resting on your shoulder. Memories rush back when she grasps you tightly by the arm and repeats those familiar words: “Oppa! Be my boyfriend!”

The sweet honey of her command makes you feel like a middle schooler again. It’s bittersweet. It’s a good thing she’s buried deep in your shoulder: she would’ve seen the sadness on your face, and it didn't make sense for both of you to carry that burden. You’re quick to mask the pain with a smile when Soeun lifts her head out of your shoulder. There’s visible annoyance in her expression like she’s waiting for you to finish the cadence of this back-and-forth.

“Buy me Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and I’ll think about it,” you finally reply. Satisfied with your response, she returns to your inviting shoulder.

There’s nothing but silence for a few minutes, all while Soeun still grasps onto you. She’s too immersed in the meaningful moment to end it so quickly. Suddenly, she reaches for her phone. A mirror displaying a girl on a boy’s shoulder fills the entire screen in her outstretched hand. You happily smile for her photo, then snap.

“We really would make a great couple, you know.”

Nevermind that you can’t respond to Soeun’s advances. Does she really still have feelings for me after all this time?

The truth is Soeun never seemed like someone you would fall for, but the more she hung around, the more things felt like anything could be possible. She would’ve been a really great first girlfriend, no doubt. In fact, there’s some regret deep down that she wasn’t. But knowing you were leaving that summer, how could you break your own heart like that? How could you break her heart like that? Peanut butter cups were just a lame excuse to ensure neither of you got close enough to experience the candy crush heartbreak. Soeun didn’t need to know about your reciprocated feelings. It was better that way.
