It is NOT primarily a Tiktok thing, TikTok is just the new iteration of a very old pattern
prefacing this with the observation that this seems to be primarily a tiktok thing but when did people start treating hobbyist artists like posting drawings online is some kind of full time job you have to strive to do your best in, or like its some kind of sacred ascetic monk journey to become a perfect hyperrealist artist. some of us are just autistic and want to draw the same oc in the same pose 1000 times and you are blessed to be allowed to lay your eyes upon that. goodnight.
#nah this has always been a thing#I made a couple posts on this before but ‘this Tiktok culture’ thing has been here since deviant art and shit#in fact—I’d argue this is why a site like Ao3 is so revolutionary. the culture of engagement encourages hobbyist amateurs#and discourages anybody who gives ‘unsolicited constructive criticism’ WHICH is not how most art communities work.#this is why commenting culture on Ao3 is so opaque—many ppl come to Ao3 thinking it’s like other sites and get confused when authors r mad#‘why are they mad? I’m just helping them improve’#also#the norm of ‘improvement at all costs’ in most art communities used to even extend to people getting mad if you didn’t accept their crit#but there’s been backlash cycles that have made that gauche#until you get to Tiktok where the artists are all babies who haven’t lived through the old discourse#like GUYS we’ve been over this. it’s not helpful to bully under the guise of constructive critique#that’s likely why you think this phenomenon is new when it’s decades old#it’s also deeply tied to the way algorithms and capital work#note that ao3 is a non-algorithm non-profit while other sites are for profit algorithm led
