Two Ghosts Chapter 5
TITLE: Two Ghosts Chapter 5 PAIRING: Iceman/OC, Rooster/OC (if you squint) RATING: T CHAPTER: 5/? SUMMARY: It was just a routine training session, but it changed Noel “Mongoose” Grenier’s life forever. The legends of pilots flying through time vortexes was true, because it happened to her. Dropped into 1984 during Maverick’s Top Gun training, she must navigate keeping her secret while also completing the program…again. Will she return to her own time unscathed? Or will she lose her heart in the process?
Mongoose was studying when she heard a knock on her door and Maverick and Goose walked in. “Mav, Goose, how can I help you?” she asked.
“We’re gonna go pick up my wife and son if you want to come along,” Goose told her.
All the breath left her lungs.
Carole and Bradley were coming?
Mongoose remembered Rooster telling her that he was on base when his father died.
Goose’s days were numbered.
“Um, no. I’m sure you haven’t seen your wife and son for a while. I wouldn’t want to intrude.”
“Oh, okay. Another time then,” Goose said.
“Yeah.”
Maverick and Goose turned to leave.
“If you change your mind, they’ll be here for a few days,” Goose said.
“Thank you.”
Goose nodded and he and Maverick left.
Mongoose sat in her room for a few more minutes. Her thoughts were swirling with Rooster and Goose. She threw her books aside and stood up. She needed to get off base for a little while.
Mongoose searched through the barracks until she found Wolfman and Hollywood in one of the rec rooms. “Can I borrow your Walkman?” she asked Wolfman.
“Sure.” He searched through his stuff and handed it to her.
“Thanks.” Mongoose left the pilot and his RIO and slipped the headphones on, sorely missing her AirPods. Luckily for her, she knew how to operate a cassette player.
Mongoose left the base and started jogging. Running always helped her to clear her head and keep her anxiety levels low.
She ran until she felt like her legs were going to give out. Mongoose collapsed onto the sand of the beach and laid on her back, letting the sun beat down on her.
Did she tell Goose that something was going to go horribly wrong and result in his death? What he say if she told him? Would he believe her or think she was being paranoid?
Mongoose picked up her dog tags, selecting Rooster’s. “Talk to me, Roo.”
Tears filled Mongoose’s eyes.
She wanted to go home.
She wanted to go hang out with the Dagger squad at the Hard Deck.
She wanted to harmlessly flirt with Bob and watch his cheeks go red.
She wanted to play pool with Hangman.
She wanted to get into Star Wars debates with Fanboy and watch Phoenix roll her eyes at them.
But most of all, she wanted to fall asleep with Rooster after an all-night classic movie marathon.
The longer Mongoose was stuck in this era, the more she missed her life in the future.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“The bogey has good position right here,” Viper said as they watched monitors.
They had just been through a drill and much like Maverick had done before the uranium mission, they were analyzing everyone’s performance.
Mongoose sat next to Maverick with Slider and Iceman right behind them. Iceman was leaning forward on the railing with one hand on the back of Mongoose’s neck, gently stroking the side of her neck with his thumb.
If the public display of affection went noticed by any of the pilots in the room, no one said anything. Probably because they were afraid of getting punched in the face by either Iceman or Mongoose.
“Alright, freeze frame. Moment of choice. The F-14 is defensive. He has a chance to bug out right here. Better to retire and save your aircraft than push a bad position. Charlie, jump in here anytime. Now, you stay here in that diamond another three seconds, the bogey’s gonna blow you out of the sky. You take a hard right, select zone five, you can extend an escape. You made a bad choice. Charlie…”
Charlie stepped forward. “Aircraft one performs a split S? That’s the last thing you should do. The MiG’s right on your tail. Freeze there, please. The MiG has you in his gunsight. What were you thinking at this point?”
“You don’t have time to think up there. If you think, you’re dead,” Maverick said.
“Don’t think, just do,” Mongoose added, backing Maverick up.
“We’ll, that’s a big gamble with a $30 million plane, Lieutenant.”
Iceman whipped off his aviators and sat back in his seat, but not before lightly squeezing Mongoose’s neck. Both he and Maverick heard her sharp intake of breath.
Charlie walked back towards the monitors. “Unfortunately, the gamble worked. The MiG never got a clean shot. Maverick makes an aggressive vertical move here, comes over the top, and he defeats the bandit with a missile shot. The encounter was a victory, but I think that we’ve shown it as an example of what not to do. Next.”
Slider leaned towards Maverick. “Gutsiest move I’ve ever seen.”
Maverick smirked and held up his fist.
Mongoose tapped it with her own.
When class was over, Maverick stormed out of the classroom.
“Hey! Mav! Wait up!” Mongoose said, chasing after the fuming aviator. He turned to her.
“What do you want, Noel?”
“Ouch. First name basis?”
Maverick shook his head. “Sorry.”
“Don’t listen to her. You’re the best fighter pilot I’ve ever seen, so don’t let her get to you.”
“Better than your boyfriend?”
Mongoose laughed. “Yes. Even better than Ice.”
“Lieutenant!” Charlie called.
“Uh oh. Here comes the missus,” Mongoose teased.
Maverick rolled his eyes and stormed off, Charlie following.
She stood there watching the couple until a pair of hands landed on her waist. Mongoose jumped and spun around to face a smirking Iceman. “Don’t do that!”
Iceman chuckled. “You know, for a fighter pilot you sure are jumpy…”
“I just don’t like people sneaking up on me is all.”
“How about you and me go get that drink I owe you?”
“I believe you owe me a date too, Kazansky.”
Iceman wrapped an arm around her waist. “Indeed I do, Grenier.”

Soooo I wrote a thing-
I mostly pictured a very Not Amused Ice having to deal with everybody shenanigans again and Maverick cackling in the background (like the little chaos gremlin that he is) whilst convinced he is, in fact, the Dagger’s favorite Dad anyways.
I didn't try too hard ('cause first time and all) and I was like ugh I need to make a chapter for each Dagger/Dad that’s a lot. So I did not do that … for now. Feedback would be appreciated, though !
It is way too early on a summer Sunday morning when Maverick opens the door to find the whole Top Gun class of ‘86 (sans Wolfman) on his doorstep.
His first reflex is to close the door and stare at the wood panel for a few seconds.
- “Pete ? Who was it ?”
Wordlessly, Maverick sidesteps and watches as Ice opens the door again before closing it with a groan.
Maverick snickers.
- “Do you think they’ll go if we ignore them long enough?”
- “… Not a chance.” Ice sighs before opening the door once more, skirting around the dozen pair of shoes on the floor to go make himself a well needed cup of coffee.
Maverick follows and kisses the top of his husband’s head as the Flyboys join them sheepishly, sitting in the many new kitchen chairs in silence. Everybody knows better than to disturb the COMPACFLT before the mug is empty.
When Ice fills his Army Wife mug (a gift from Maverick) a second time and stares pointedly at Hollywood, he clears his throat and looks at the other pilots in the room.
-” So… Sundown ran into Wolfman yesterday on the beach, with Hangman.”
Ice just sips at his coffee with a blank stare while Maverick gets into a coughing fit that suspiciously sounds like a laugh, in the middle of pouring pancake batter in a pan.
- “Then I called him to ask if he wanted to come watch the game at my place” Hollywood adds “but he said he and Hangman were having, and I quote, movie night because the kid has never seen Robocop. “
The fact that Hollywood is almost pouting doesn’t seem to affect Ice, who starts piling pancakes on his plate and looks at Slider next. Maverick hangs his apron (that reads “this is what a really cool dad looks like”) back on the hook, a plate stacked high with pancakes on the counter and sits next to him.
- “I went to the fair with my niece. I thought I saw them on bumper cars but I wasn't sure. I found them at the firing range later on. Wolf was trying to convince him to switch to a stick shift car. They were both wearing cowboy hats.” Slider adds with a frown.
Maverick is not even trying to hide his shit eating grin, now. Chin propped on one hand, he just eats his pancakes while glancing at Ice from time to time.
Merlin is next.
- “Hangman’s car broke down at the Hard Deck the other day. When I went to ask if he needed a hand he was on the phone. He said Wolfman was coming to pick him up, but uh… I’m pretty sure I heard him say … “thanks Dad” before hanging up? “
Chipper scoffs.
- “Pretty sure that’s when I received a weird call, asking about car parts and mechanical issues on a model that I know he doesn’t own, and when I ask if he wants me to come by he says that he’s got it, and that he’ll get “Jake” to give him a hand” .”
Silence falls on the kitchen when a little commotion comes from upstairs. Voices and laughter coming from the stairwell cut short when the full Dagger squadron reaches the kitchen and find it already full of people. Most of them Commanders and Admirals.
Bradley emerges from the crowd and greets each of his Uncles with a hug, before stealing the stack of pancakes and beckoning his squad towards the terrace in the backyard.
The ‘86 class watches bemused as the young pilots collect a mug marked with their callsign from the cupboard and make use of the brand new family sized coffee machine, then take turns greeting Mav and Ice with a hug before joining Bradley outside. Ice clears his throat.
- “Jake?”
- “Yes Pops?” the blond pilots holds the screen door open with his foot, his hands taken by his and Rooster’s steaming mugs.
- “Are you seeing Leo today?”
Hangman’s face lights up.
- “Yeah, he wanted to take me fishing, but when I told him that Payback and Fanboy never have been either, he proposed to take us all with him.”
Merlin and Hollywood look at each other quizzically, the later mouthing something like “What the actual fuck-”. Slider frowns and crosses his arms and Chipper gives an envious look towards the outside where the banter has resumed and fights are being had over pancakes.
Ice nods.
- “Sounds great, kiddo. What don’t you all come back here for barbecue? Make sure to pass the invite to Wolf.”
- “Will do, Sir. Anything you want us to bring?”
- “We’re almost out of beer, and we’ll need more eggs if you kids want waffles tomorrow morning.” Mav pipes in.”
- “You got it, Mav!” Hangman winks before exiting the room.
OK, so we in the Top Gun/Top Gun: Maverick have discussed and explored (in au format or canonical) Hangman’s father-son(mostly in-law) relationships with Iceman and Maverick.
But have we considered….Hangman and Wolfman.

THINK ABOUT IT - Wolfman meets Hangman at an Icemav barbecue. Wolfman knows he’s Rooster’s boyfriend, finds out he’s a southern boy from Texas, much like himself.(”You got a cowboy hat?” “Yes sir, I am from Texas, after all.” “Good answer, kid. I like you…”)
Then later on, while asking more about this intriguing kid that he’s come to like and identifies with a bit, he finds out from Maverick and Rooster that ever since he came out, Hangman doesn’t really have much of a relationship with his conservative, straight-laced, father anymore.
So Wolfman dials Ice’s number like his fingers are on fire.
“I’LL TAKE HIM! Can I keep him? Can-I-Can-I-Can-I-Can-I…?!!!”
“Why’re you asking me? Ask Maverick.”
“Fine, give Maverick the phone!”
“Y’know, it’s 2am - “
“ - Ice, come on!”
Ice grumbles and Wolfman can hear him saying something to Maverick, who then comes on the phone.
“…Alright, he’s yours.”
“YESSS!”
