I think what it is is how much the slang is but also how much it’s just a little off of what the modern consensus of Old Western cliched speech would be? Like, it sounds made up. I mean, duh, it is but because of that cultural drift it sounds extra made up and wrong. He sounds like a fake cowboy.

Crit Role Miniature Rollout: C2E102
With Andrew Harshman
An archive and review of the minis used on CR.
Tumblr media
Empathy is a powerful magic indeed, but it doesn’t seem to have worked on this weeping bodak. What do you know, I’ve made another accurate mini prediction with the appearance of the D&D Icons of the Realms Bodak. A noticeable though ultimately unimpressive improvement.
Avert your eyes, it’s time for Crit Role Miniature Rollout Campaign 2 Episode 102!

The Terrain

Island Tarpits Mats by Mars: Forgotten Temple Plaza Tabletop Wargaming Play Mat,  Dwarven Forge Dreadhollow Forest, Printable Terrain Gloomwood Trees painted by @Minileed and sourced by Hyperion Terrain, Legendary Realms Tall Tree (out of print), and Tiny Terrain: Small Tree
A groovy arrangement of mostly familiar CR terrain. Although this map contains a lot of terrain used in previous episodes, the arrangement, lighting, addition of black construction paper, and the hanging of swampy foliage transforms this into a fresh looking locale. The Forgotten Temple Plaza Mats by Mars mat serves as the bottom-most layer, though it is heavily obscured. It brilliantly fills out the terrain negative space with blisteringly beautiful artwork. Handsome!

Bodak Volo & Mordenkainen's Foes #001 Bodak Mini image sourced from minisgallery.com
The bodak creature design reminds me of the “Putty Patrollers” of the Power Rangers franchise. As mentioned in my last post, I’m not a big fan of this figure. It’s not especially interesting, detailed, or threatening. The bodak is not a wildly popular monster either, so I doubt we will get another version any time soon. I suppose it will have to do for now.

Will-o’-Wisp Baldur's Gate Descent Into Avernus #005 Barnabas the Flameskull
So long ago in Episode 16 we saw literal Will-o’-Wisp miniatures. The wisps in this encounter are D&D Icons of the Realms Barnabas the Flameskull figures. This model makes a pretty good wisp but a lousy flameskull. Talk about a goofy lookin’ skull. Maybe they were going for some sort of artsy abstract interpretation of a skull. I may need to consult an art critic.

Viridian War of the Dragon Queen #18 Warden of the Wood
Powerful pose, solid paint, good miniature resolution. Too bad about the white people dreads.
Closing Thoughts and Predictions
Tumblr media
On the left we’ve got Beau’s base in Episode 87 and on the left the bodak combat. I’m not totally sure what’s going on with the character mini bases. It’s probably related to the base flocking removal two episodes ago? Perhaps it was easier to just transplant the miniatures to new bases? Still sounds like a real hassle. Surely these are not totally new minis, right? Curiouser and curiouser. Developments will be reported as they become available.
No detailed predictions this time. But given the aberrant nature of Vokodo, I’m banking on some far realm creature miniatures. I am eagerly awaiting the likely appearance of a Vokodo mini, possibly as early as next session!
