9 & 11 for A Click Away

The fic that I finally finished after over three months of working on it!

9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?

Hmmm, well, since it was all pretty much based on this prompt for the AU meme, it pretty much always followed that plot. Of course, it did go through minor changes the longer that I worked on it. For example, in that post, Lailah was on Sorey’s “side” of things, but when I started writing it, I realized that I wanted Lailah to be Mikleo’s violin teacher, and have her be friends with Edna, Zaveid, and Eizen. 

There were plenty of ideas that weren’t in the original prompt that I added as I went along, though, mainly the sideplots of the characters who weren’t Sorey or Mikleo. All their story arcs sort of evolved as I wrote. Dezel’s relationship with the rest of the party, the love triangle between Rose, Alisha, and Sergei, Alisha being nonbinary. Actually, Alisha being nonbinary was a headcanon that I really liked and said, “from now on, all the Alishas in my fics are retroactively nonbinary�� and then I realized that this was my opportunity to use that headcanon for real.

Oh! Originally the epilogue was going to be a montage of scenes from between Sormik getting together and the last scene at the college where Mikleo is typing his blog. A couple scenes showing Rose and Dezel making up, Mikleo’s summer visit to Ladylake, Sorey being a hopeless romantic even long-distance, Roserali fluff, gang shenanagins... but I kind of wanted to keep the epilogue shorter. But I do have some of those scenes/headcanons for that time period still that I might either publish separately or wait to see if I want to do anything else with them!

11: What do you like best about this fic?

Personally, I really like some of the self-indulgences that I put in. I don’t know if some of my choices are popular, exactly (see: poly Roserali, nonbinary!Alisha) but I really enjoyed putting them in. Because I can! Because I’m the author! Yeah, that was fun. :P Also, in the last chapter, Sorey wearing makeup. Let my son be femme if he wants.

But aside from that, I just really like some of the parallels to the game, and the way the AU makes their relationship (and the relationship among the others) different while it also stays very similar. For example, one major theme of the Sormik relationship in the game is their desire to share everything, since they grew up sharing everything. In this AU, they still have that same desire, even though the distance makes that much more of a challenge. This is even reflected a little in that their families knew each other in this AU, too; a bit of soulmate shenanagins, but also just highlighting how much they want to be with each other experiencing things together. 

(Speaking of canon connections, I love that they met through being RPers of their own canon series, lol. I can just see those two nerds getting really into fandom and worldbuilding and all that. I also like that Dezel’s arc reflected his canon arc, a bit; being unwilling to open up and having it ruin his relationships. This didn’t make it in the fic, but when Dezel moved, he ended up being “adopted” by an older student, Lafarga, and his friends, and those friendships helped him grow until he wanted to reach back out to Rose and the others, which almost makes his arc in Click Away the reverse of his arc in the game? Which I really enjoy)

Also, this isn’t about the fic, but all the comments I’ve gotten on it about people who connected to Click Away because it reminded them of THEIR online friends. I really wasn’t expecting that when I started writing it, so it was really cool to have all these people telling me they related to my fic!!
