#but the second he sets foot out of his household he feels the 'Qunari /derogatory' anyway

he's human-raised, technically, but no one is going to call him human when he looks Like That. most will count him as a Qunari but when it's convenient they'll claim he isn't, and it's not like he's unaware that there is a difference between him and most other Vashoth/Tal-Vashoth. he's heard about the Qun in stories and many of those stories contradict each other and sometimes he wishes he had his own perspective on it and sometimes he's glad he doesn't. he knows the Antivan stories and songs his mother raised him on but they're really more "his mother's" than "Antivan" to him and anyway, if he had to claim any human culture it would probably be the Marcher one, except his Marcher experience mostly boils down to living in a secluded cabin for twenty years and hanging out with the Dalish (whose language and stories he happens to know pretty well through sheer proximity, but he's still always going to be a somewhat ignorant outsider due to. you know. Not Being Dalish) at which point the question starts to loop around on itself so. really. it's kind of pointless to think about these kinds of things anyway
anyway Aqun not being a mage is crucial to his character because if he was a mage he'd have a clear cut answer to what he is. a group he undebatably belonged to. and not having that is exactly why he's Like That <- capable of coexisting with pretty much anyone but always just a little separate
#spinning him.#I don't know if I can put it into words but what Gets Me is.#he got to have a 'human' upbringing where he was never looked down upon#and had access to education and a comfortable life and a family that supported him#and a lot of it is thanks to his mother leveraging her Human PrivilegeTM to make sure her husband and son can live comfortably#and he wouldn't ever trade it for the average Tal-Vashoth experience of. you know. having stones thrown at you and things like that#but the second he sets foot out of his household he feels the 'Qunari /derogatory' anyway#and there's just enough of a gap between him and other qunari that he's alone in this#because the prejudice he experiences is still lighter than what they have. he's aware. he knows human culture and he's more human-looking#and he can argue his own case and even get people to back off sometimes#but he's also completely alone in this. there's no one he can turn to who would fully understand#and that's just another one of those things he's better off not thinking about#he'll just. adjust. he'll be human when he needs to be and he'll be qunari when he needs to be and he'll be a mercenary and a scholar#and the inquisitor and and and and and and#herearedragons meta#oc: aqun adaar
