Fuck it. I'm not giving up. I'm retyping this shit from memory.

Okay. Hear me out. Lance's dad works as a groom for a couple famous racehorses, so Lance grows up around them. Lance is also built like a toothpick so he's encouraged to pursue jockeying (he likes it no problem) and trains to be a jockey riding some of the horses his dad works with. Lance races a horse called Blue Lion Lightning, owned by Alfor and trained by his daughter Allura. Blue Lion Lightning is Allura's first horse that she's fully in charge of so it's kind of a gamble, and Lance is new to the barn. Lance also has a slight crush on Allura, as expected. Enter Keith. Keith's mom, Krolia, was a famous jockey before he was born, setting records with a horse called Empire, owned by Zarkon.

However, at the height of her career with Empire there was an incident involving foul play on Zarkon's behalf that resulted in Krolia sustaining a pretty damning injury that put her out of the sport for a while. The incident was related to disagreements between Krolia and Zarkon, as well as Empire's trainer Honerva. Because of this even after recovering she quits the sport, as cutting ties with Zarkon means she wouldn't be able to work with Empire and it wasn't worth it for her. She settles down with her long time boyfriend Tex and has Keith. For some reason, though (haven't quite figured this out yet) her racing troubles come back to haunt her and she up and dissapears, leaving Keith to grow up with Tex, who isn't involved in horses at all and doesn't bring Keith into them except for taking him to the track a few times as a small child. Keith's dad dies fighting a wildfire when Keith is 14, leaving Keith to theoretically live with his nominated next of kin on his mom's side, only Krolia cut contact with all of them and they arent connected to any of his papers.

Keith goes into foster care and racks himself up a pretty hefty juvenile record (as misguided 15 year olds with nothing to lose tend to do) and ends up forced to complete community service hours at a local lesson and rehabilitation barn that specializes in OTTB (off the track thoroughbreds) through the Retired Racehorse Program. There he meets Shiro, who switched to teaching and barn management from being a top competitor on the hunter jumper circuit because of his chronic illness. Shiro sees that Keith works well with high strung horses and that Keith is lacking direction in life, and gives Keith a suggestion and offer to work at a nearby racing barn once his hours are up.

They become very close and Shiro eventually applies to be Keith's foster brother long term so Keith can keep working with horses easier. Keith accepts to both offers, having recently done a deep dive on his mom with information his dad withheld from him and found out who his mom was (he keeps it to himself because they don't share last names and he can't prove it). It's the final push he needs to pursue horses. His new position as a stable hand/jockey in training under trainer Iverson (who refuses to overlook his record) is pretty rocky, but he gets through it mostly. Mostly as in he ends up getting into a nasty fight with fellow jockey in training James Griffin, which gets him fired.

At this point he's just turned 18 and he ghosts Shiro to avoid having to tell him. Coincidentally, during the last 2 weeks he's still working while Iverson finds a replacement, a trainer from the marmora racing syndicate (Thace) visits the barn to check out one of the horses Keith was working with. He takes interest in Keith but Keith admits he's just here until a replacement shows up for fighting James and that he's not involved with that horse anymore. Thace demands Keith ride the horse (Deluxite) for him (to Iverson's annoyance) and sees potential in Keith. He later gives Keith an offer to ride for the marmora syndicate and possibly be his trainer (much to Kolivan, the head of the group and occasional trainer's dismay in his impulsivity).

Keith starts riding for marmora, with Thace helping him finish the last leg of training to get his certificate. The other jockeys are initially cold to him (namely acxa, who he later becomes friends with) but he proves his worth. He ends up working mostly with a horse thats known as kinda hard to manage named Blade Running and once he get's his certificate starts riding him. Thace says their tempers match. Kolivan finds Keith's riding somewhat familiar but can't place why (he isn't aware Krolia even had a kid 🫣). Keith races with Lance and Lance gets obsessed with him. Lance has pre-decided to start a rivalry because he heard from Allura that marmora is aligned with Zarkon, Alfor's long time enemy (this isn't true and mostly word of mouth just because Kolivan used to work with Zarkon back when Krolia rode for him.) Either way Keith secretly is just as fixated no matter how much he acts bothered by Lance's interactions. Enemies to lovers half closeted not quite 20 teenagers etc etc.

Meanwhile, Lotor, Zarkon's son, is attempting to slowly take over his father's assets and change how his horses and people are managed, to try and dispel the shadiness and rumors Zarkon's known for. This takes Allura's interest, and luckily Lance starts actually falling for Keith just when Allura shifts her attention to Lotor and tentatively giving him a second chance (Lotor like Allura wants to make marmora lose more often). Kolivan eventually finds out Keith is Krolia's son (Kolivan and Krolia were close friends during Zarkon) and as Keith starts winning more races and getting more famous that fact morphs into a sob-success story for Keith (which pisses him off). Shiro sees Keith in a couple articles because of his popularity and considers tracking him down. He talks about it with Ulaz, who is with marmora, and knows Shiro because he's involved in the OTTB program for Shiro's barn.) Just as Shiro's about to confront Keith at work Keith caves and seeks Shiro out at his apartment and apologizes for avoiding him. They make up messily and Shiro eventually goes back to becoming an influential/supportive figure in Keith's life.

As Keith and Lance become more famous, Krolia sees one of his races with Blade Running on tv and realizes that nothing she did couldve stopped Keith from racing. Hesitant, she steels herself and calls Kolivan, who convinces her that no matter how much she thinks Keith hates her its better for her to at least try to be in his life. She shows up at one of Keith's big races after he wins and Keith almost passes out (they have a small fight after once theyre out of camera range but Keith realizes he did what his mom did to him to Shiro and what's in the past cant be changed). Undecided plot point here where Keith gets offered to ride a horse called Ruby's Honor for Alfor and is conflicted about leaving marmora. Krolia also doesnt trust Lotor, and Lance is dealing with the fact that him and Blue arent working well and Allura wants him to start riding a horse called Tron Valiance instead. Lots of feelings, high stakes all around, etc. Regardless, klance endgame and Keith and Lance both find themselves in jockeying.

Side note: James has to get thrown off at least once for tha laughs. Hunk is Lance's friend from high school who's deathly afraid of horses but tries Really Hard not to be. Pidge is Lance's one close friend from the horse scene he thinks he can be honest with since she just kind of hangs around (Matt is a freelance track pony rider and Pidge is bored) They're scary good at predicting outcomes and judging horses but they don't like riding them. Veronica changes her mind about horses and ends up making waves as a jumper with Shiro's help. Keith is best man at Shiro and Adam's wedding. Lotor manages to redeem the Galra horse racing reputation, Zarkon gets exposed for industry blackmail and illegally drugging horses (everything that got covered up with Krolia is aired out essentially). Movie outro music and credits roll. Krolia buys Blade Running when he retires. Wooo.

Showdown in the Dark Night! Joker vs Shadow CH2

<2>The Girl with Mysterious Powers

Let's wind time back a little...

Sometime before Shadow fought against the police, another disturbance occurred outside the manor.

"Ice Shot!" shouted a boy, and a bluish-white beam shot from his gun. The beam instantly froze the surrounding grass and stopped the pursuing police in their tracks. The boy watched the scene with satisfaction, letting a carefree smile form on his face. His long and straight blue hair fluttered in the night wind. A long white coat and violet scarf caught the breeze in a similar fashion. The bristled yellow crest of hair above his handsome face completed the look. It was Phantom Thief Spade...!

"Well, how's it going on your end?" Turning around, there was a white shadow fighting the police at a short distance away.

The sharp sound of clanging metal rang out, followed by thuds of men clubbed with the hilt of a sword falling to the ground. In the thick of it was a white, feminine silhouette swinging a sword as if she were dancing. Eventually, once there were no officers left standing around her, the girl lowered her weapon and turned to Spade. "No problem. They were a letdown."

Her long blonde hair was tied into high twintails, and she was cloaked in a white and pink coat. Her gleaming eyes held a diamond-shaped light. Despite her winsome appearance, she effortlessly wielded a large sword in her right hand, soon sheathing it at her hip. It was Phantom Thief Queen...!

"Anyway, you took more time than me. Is it just me, or is your Shot not as accurate as usual?"

"You think so? I didn't think I had any problem... Let's check the map." Spade changed the subject and took out his phone. "Let's see..." A map of the manor showed on the handheld screen.

Fields of all sizes, large and small, were arranged around the Gardens, and each was connected by an intricately schemed path. It was difficult to grasp the entire layout without a map. There was a red blinking dot on it. Spade and Queen were currently in the furthest region of the garden. They were still far from the manor.

"That's pretty distant. This looks like it'll be a harder job than anticipated..."

"Geez, requests from Grandpa are really demanding." As Queen complained, Spade took a breath and looked up into the dark sky. Yes, it was three days ago that Spade had been called by Queen.

Spade, Queen, and Joker all had the same master in phantom thievery. Once called "The Silver Magician", he trekked from one city to another and stole treasures from around the world: the legendary great thief, Silver Heart. Each of them had their own circumstances for being taken in by Silver Heart, and they trained under him to learn the fundamentals of phantom thievery. He was like a parent to the three of them, and not only had he taught them techniques for thievery, he also taught them life skills. Even after they had learned enough of the trade from him, Queen still lived with Silver Heart, and Joker and Spade visited on occasion to check up on their master. None of them could very well refuse a request from the master.

When Spade arrived at the hideout at the top of the hill, the first thing out of Queen's mouth was "It's actually quite a problem..."

"It really is," continued Queen's partner, the phantom thief dog Roko. Roko was a super dog bred through genetic research and could both speak and understand human language. He also lived in Silver Heart's hideout along with Queen.

"You know how Joker and Shadow sent out notices?"

"Yeah, for the Komachi's Gilded Chrysanthemum housed at the Cape Gardens, correct? I didn't think Joker would be interested in it, but if Shadow's going after the same thing, that would explain it. The two are probably fighting like kids over it." Spade smiled wearily.

Spade usually had his own juvenile conflicts with Joker too, but Queen avoided mentioning it. "Well, about that... apparently Grandpa has his eye on Komachi's Gilded Chrysanthemum too."

"What?" Spade asked.

A door banged open from further inside. "Spaaaaade...... pleaaaaaaase..." came a miserable moan from their master, Silver Heart, who had just entered the room.

He wore a snowy white double-breasted suit, completed with a white silk hat and white cape. Well-polished gold buttons and pink cuffs poking out from under the sleeves accented the look. He sported an impressive silvery beard, and an antique monocle shone over his left eye. It was the fabulous, elegant figure of phantom thief Silver Heart!

...That was the intent, at least, but the reality was a little different.

While his attire was flawless, the Silver Magician was lying down with his stomach pressed against a swiveling stool, using his hands and knees to slowly propel the wobbly wheels.

Spade sighed at the sight. "Master, your back...?"

Silver Heart had a chronic trick back. "Ughh... that's it. I picked up something while cleaning and it was lighter than I thought. That's when I cracked it terribly."

"Argh, this is because you tried cleaning on your own. If you had just asked, I'd have had Roko help."

"What, just me again?" whined Roko. Queen was no good at any household chores.

"Master, why do you want Komachi's Gilded Chrysanthemum?"

"Well, you see..." Silver Heart hesitated and glanced at Queen.

Queen sighed and spoke for him. "He promised the queen he'd give her Komachi's Gilded Chrysanthemum."

"You mean the queen of that country on the cliffs? Master's girlfriend, that one?"

"That's right. He wanted to show off and told her 'I'll bring you a flower hairpin beautiful enough for you.'"

"That makes sense."

"So he wants me to go steal it in his place. Grandpa's in this state, after all."

"Sorry..." Silver Heart let out a pitiful groan, nodding his head.

"Hm, a treasure that both Joker and Shadow are after, huh..." Spade folded his arms and thought. "Sounds fun, let's go."

"Kyo kyo." Spade's assistant Dark Eye, who had been listening off to the side, cackled in surprise. Tall and slim, Dark Eye leaned their bandage-wrapped face into Spade's ear. "But Spade-sama, you just finished a major job. If you don't rest your body for the next three days, your temperature will..."

"It's all right, Dark Eye. I'll be working with Queen this time. Besides, it's a chance to show up Joker and Shadow." Spade grinned. It was a smile just as childish as Joker and Shadow were.

Spade rubbed his eyes as he ran through the garden. To tell the truth, his condition had gotten worse since last night. He had lied about it up to this point, but the exhaustion was building up. Queen had seen through him just earlier. I hope I can hold out to the end...

The pair was now past the gardens and approaching the manor. Just then, a call came through on his phone. "You've managed to avoid security so far, but that'll be difficult further along." It was Roko's voice. Roko and Dark Eye were on standby in Spade's airship and handling logistical support.

"Looks like it. How about the security cameras, Dark Eye?"

"Kyo kyo, I've successfully hacked into them."

"Thank you. Keep directing us, please."

"Kyokyo, please wait. Your body..." Dark Eye's worried voice came from the phone.

"It's fine."

"Kyokyo, but Spade-sama, your breath was erratic before you went out. Please do not stress..."

"Enough already, keep watching the cameras."

"Kyokyo... very well."

"I'm counting on you." Spade said brusquely and took a breath. Really, what a worrywart. Of course, he knew Dark Eye was looking out for him. Even so, Spade didn't want to be handled with kid gloves. I'm all right... "Okay Queen, let's go." But when he looked up, Queen was concealing herself against a hedge and peering into the garden. "What's up?" He approached and asked, only to be shushed and told to crouch down by Queen with her finger against her mouth. "Take a look at that."

Spade stooped down besides Queen and looked to where she was watching. There was an agitated silhouette at the edge of a large pond with fountain. "Isn't that..."

A pretty young girl's face bobbed out of a thicket. Her pink hair was tied into two buns, and she wore a red-violet jumper skirt over a purple blouse, a white petticoat sticking out from underneath. A yellow ribbon hung at the neck of her blouse, and the expression on her face as she glanced around the area suggested she was still unworldly. The girl's name was Rose. She was Shadow's younger twin sister. She always worked with Shadow, but she seemed to be alone today. Rose bit her lip slightly and focused her sights on the manor.

"What's up with Rose...?" mused Queen. As soon as the words were out of her mouth, the deafening sound of an explosion followed by the sound of something crumbling apart came from the manor.

"...!" Rose jumped out of the thicket in surprise. She apparently tripped a security sensor when she did. The wee-oo of sirens filled the area, and searchlights zeroed in on Rose at once. The nearby officers on patrol ran to the scene. Leading them were Ginko and Momo.

"Hold it right there, Shadow! Wait, Joker... it's not him either!?"

"A girl...!?"

The pair was perplexed by Rose's appearance. While Shadow had made a name for himself as a phantom thief, Rose was apparently still a no-name.

Then Oniyama's voice came over the radio. "Ginko-chan, Momo-chan, so arrest all suspicious persons around the manor!"

"Roger, Inspector!" Ginko responded and looked towards Rose again.

Meanwhile, still hidden against the hedge, Spade asked. "What shall we do? Do we help?" But Queen wordlessly shook her head. It was as if she was saying "no need". The reason was quickly gleaned.

"You're under arrest!"

"Get her!"

At their order, the police immediately charged toward Rose. Beside Ginko, Momo leapt high into the air. Momo was a former SAT (special assault team) member and an expert in combat martial arts. The average police officer was nothing compared to her. Powerful Momo brandished a tonfa-like weapon and closed in on Rose! But just as Rose seemed to be shaking her head to and fro with an expression of futility, she calmly raised her right hand towards the officers and abruptly opened her eyes. Grrrrip...! The air trembled with a heavy shockwave, reaching all the way to Spade and Queen some distance away. The next moment, Momo and the other officers around Rose were stopped in their tracks.

This was Rose's ability. By concentrating and channeling the power from her body into her hand, she could stop a target from moving. Spade and Queen had both experienced it before. It was like being trapped in a hunk of iron, unable to move a finger. Though the mind was clear, the body was paralyzed stiff. Momo and Ginko had no idea of what happened, and despite being frozen, their confusion was obvious. Rose kept focusing her power and was about to leave the scene, but then-- "Who's that out there!"

Glancing up at the veranda of the third floor, there was Hayami gazing down towards them. "Is that... Hayami Kyoutarou?" Spade asked.

He heard Rose, who had looked up at the same time, whisper his name as well. "Hayami-san..." Right after, the energy active on Momo and the rest wore off. Rose had lost concentration.

"Hrm? Aren't ya...?" Hayami seemed to have noticed her as well, but the area was too dark to see any faces.

The police took the opportunity and charged at Rose. "Catch her!" Momo bounded into the air and plunged toward Rose, who was standing absentmindedly. Her tonfa swung down. But before the tonfa could connect, it was halted with a clang. "Wha!?"

"Ghh...!" Queen had cut in between the two of them. She grit her teeth with effort and pushed back Momo's tonfa.

Though Momo pressed forward, the tonfa wouldn't go any further. "Kghhgh... you're here, Phantom Thief Queen!"

"You're not bad if my sword can't cut through." Queen and Momo put their weight into their weapons and were locked sword-to-tonfa. Their strength was equal, and Queen was unable to step away. "Spade!"

"Yes, I know!" Spade made a fabulous jump and landed on the fountain spout. The water sprinkled out around the area. "Ice Shot!" Spade shot his cooling beam at the shower, freezing the spray and making icy precipitation rain down on Ginko, Momo, and the other officers.

"Eeyah!"

"Owowow!"

While the officers flailed, Spade blew up a large bubble of gum above him and grabbed hold of Rose. The gum is called "Balloon Gum", and is one of the phantom thief tools employed by Joker, Spade, and Queen. By chewing the gum and blowing into it, the gum’s ingredients chemically react to form a gas lighter than air. If held above one's head, it can lift up a certain amount of weight off the ground, much like an ad balloon.

"Eek!" Rose let out a low squeak as Spade continued to rise. Queen followed suit and took into the air.

"Hold it! Spade, Queen!"

"Another time, my fellows! Adios!" Once he finished speaking, he disappeared from sight.

"W- he's gone...!?" The officers searched around in confusion, but the only thing left was the darkness of night.

Backstory

Anne was raised in a home of scientists. Everything was a possibility for new discovery in her house. Her dad was a bio-engineer and her mom was a geneticist and they deeply encouraged their little girl to go into science. And hey that’s exactly what she did! Considered a rather strange sort by her classmates and teachers in school, she was always working towards the next big breakthrough in the sciences. It wasn’t until after college that she got the chance to make the biggest contribution to science she could ever think of.

Having taken up the fields of both of her parents and making great strides in both of them, she was contacted by a military agency to well... develop super soldiers. Apparently, they wanted a way to guarantee the safety of the country and they believed SS’s were the only way to achieve that. This was truly her big break.. so she accepted the offer.

Fast forward a few years and she’s losing funding for her project. She’s been toiling at it for years and still no usable results. Soon, she can’t afford to pay the human subjects for her testing... And when all hope seemed lost, in came her college sweetheart and current boyfriend. He was offering himself as a test subject for her work. He knew how much this meant to her and he wanted her to succeed. Little did he or she know that Annie’s work would finally yield fruit in these coming months. Not only would she finally begin progressing towards truly impactful results but also towards quite large amounts of fun...

re: marin, i'm still gonna wait & see but i am a little worried bc i don't see any progress like i do w zhenya. even tho zhenya has struggled in comps, when i watch practice vids, i see the improvement in her jump technique (less pre-rotation, cleaner toe pick). with marin, even tho she was never the best jumper, she's never had the chronic ur problems she's had this season and i don't see any improvement in the underlying technique. i do like her sp a lot tho & she's still got lovely flow.

that’s fair! they’re also different coaches and i think it might take her a bit longer than zhenya and brian’s progress. raf has helped a lot of good skaters imo, so i trust him even if it looks different than zhenya’s progress.

Living In A Fog: Life With Second Impact Syndrome

Imagine all the noise around you — classmates talking and laughing as they shove by on the way to their lockers, the droning sound of the morning announcements coming through on the overhead speakers, the bell echoing in the concrete courtyard, signalling the start of first period.

It makes you dizzy. Your brain feels like it’s rattling around in your skull. The tears keep coming and you just don’t know why. All you feel is, well, nothing.

This was Sarah Griffin’s existence for the latter half of high school and even now, as she wraps up her bachelor’s degree at Clemson University. It stemmed from one concussion, and then was exasperated by a second one.

“Other people couldn’t help me. I couldn’t help me. I just had to kind of ride it out until my body became exhausted and I couldn’t keep it up,” she said. “I missed a lot of school because of this.”

Sarah’s life would ultimately change forever.

Heels Down Magazine is exploring the stories of equestrian athletes who’ve suffered from concussions, and the short and long term effects of the injury on their health and performance. This is the second story in an ongoing series.

It started off as an average riding lesson. Sarah, a freshman in high school near Charleston, S.C., was schooling a few 2’6” jumps on a lesson horse with her hunter/jumper trainer. The girth wasn’t cinched tightly enough, and as Sarah cantered around the course, her saddle slipped down the horse’s barrel and she landed in the dirt, head first.

“I felt dizzy right away, but I jumped right up,” Sarah recalls. “I jumped right up after the fall but then I fell right back down.”

Sarah’s trainer told her not to get back on. So instead, she went home feeling disoriented and sore. She concluded that there was a good chance she had a concussion, so her parents monitored her all night after the accident, and kept waking her up so she didn’t sleep too much with a possible head injury.

While Sarah says she didn’t suffer any memory loss, her friends noticed right away how she kept repeating herself. It wasn’t until she was in the car with friends on the way to school the next day that the ill effects began to set in.

“I remember everyone was talking at a normal volume, but to me it felt like they were screaming,” she said.

Once she got to school, it got even worse.

“I just couldn’t handle people. My brain just hurt and I started to cry, but I didn’t know why,” Sarah said.

This would spark a decade of doctors visits, panic attacks and fatigue for the amateur hunter rider. After her first concussion, an MRI would reveal that Sarah actually had a dent in her head where the muscle warped from the impact of the fall.

A second concussion three years later, where Sarah slipped off the back of a horse while jumping without stirrups, would only infuriate the symptoms of her first.

“I’m an excellent example of second impact syndrome,” said Sarah, who is now 25.

Second impact syndrome is a medical term used to describe how the brain swells rapidly, and often catastrophically, when a person suffers a second concussion before symptoms from an earlier one have subsided. The second blow to the head could occur days, weeks, or in Sarah’s case, years after the first, and even the mildest concussion can lead to irreparable harm from second impact syndrome.

Sarah described her first concussion as being more painful in the short term, and the second as having much more long-term effects. After the second injury, she became more prone to panic attacks. She felt exhausted all the time, which made it hard to keep up with regular riding and school.

“Even little things could send me into a panic attack, things that were seemingly insignificant to other people. And when I wasn’t having panic attacks I was worrying about having panic attacks and just worrying about everything in general,” Sarah said.

For more than a year, she experienced a “floating feeling” and issues with physical depth perception that would throw off her equilibrium. It gets worse when she is high off the ground, in an airplane, or even when she’s sitting in the backseat of a car. This is a problem she never had before her concussions.

“I would have to push down on the floor hard with my hands or my feet to sort of ground myself,” she described. “If I was moving and stopped, I would still feel like I was moving.”

Eventually Sarah would come to be labeled with chronic fatigue and fibromyalsia, which stemmed from her head injuries. Daily migraines made it hard to do anything but rest. It also made her extremely sensitive to medications, which only made her symptoms that much more difficult to treat.

There were many times when her brother would have to physically carry her upstairs at night to her room because Sarah’s body was so exhausted and in so much pain that she couldn’t do it herself.

“Stairs continue to be the bane of my existence,” she said.

It’s made having a social life as a college student that much harder. Sarah says she’s rarely felt well enough to go out with friends after class. Some medications made her gain weight for a while. Sarah struggles with maintaining a normal sleep schedule because the changes to her body.

Sarah’s come to accept that this is just the way she is now, migraines, fatigue and all.

“I’m up front with my teachers about it. Most of my friends know, but I pretty much have no social life because I have no time or energy,” she said.

But through the years of sleep studies, MRIs and dozens of doctors’ evaluations and tests, Sarah never let her fatigue or the headaches keep her from the barn.

“Horses helped ground me. I didn’t usually have panic attacks at the barn, it was my happy place,” said Sarah, who is studying equine science and business at Clemson.

She hopes to find a full-time job in the horse industry in South Carolina after graduation. Sarah’s spent weeks photographing herds of wild horses out West, never letting her injury get in the way of her passion. She soon may be purchasing a horse she watched be born and raised through her university program, too.

“I’m a big advocate for always wearing a helmet whenever you ride, no matter what discipline,” she says. “I was wearing a very good helmet both times. I always tell people, ‘It doesn’t matter what type of saddle you get bucked out of, you’re going to hit the ground just as hard.’”

And the first thing we see is a Take Back the Night banner, just in case anyone thought this season wasn’t going to be all about rape. *sigh* This may be hard to get through. At least the show takes the subject matter seriously.

Veronica’s Criminology professor is played by Patrick Fabian who is renowned for playing creeps and scumbags. Is it too soon to say that he’s the Hearst Rapist? Probably. Maybe he’s just the scumbag of the week.

Um, that TA is definitely the same actor who played Lucky last season, wearing a, frankly, terrible wig and some quintessentially 00’s facial scruff. Which, I mean, other than the unfortunate hair things going on is good overall since he was good as Lucky. The reuse of an actor is awfully blatant.

Okay, so fuck this Tim guy! Sexist shithead! Your smug ass wouldn’t be here to be smart mouthing Veronica without Elementary Education majors, fuckstick!

Sooooo… Wasn’t Hearst meant to be a fairly exclusive college? And yet nearly the entire cast of last season (that are still alive and in Neptune) got in? Veronica, Wallace, and Mac I get, but Logan has never been shown to be academically minded even in the slightest. Dick gets in because of family connections, fair enough, but Logan has no family left (aside from Trina and no one has ever considered her a positive association) and what he did have was accused of murder shortly before being mysteriously murdered himself. (Which, btw, is that going to be followed up on? I assume not since we, the audience, already know who done it.)

What? Veronica, first of all, how can you put Backup’s business out there like that? Secondly, if Backup has a lady friend, I need to know all about her. You can’t just drop that sort of nugget and cut to the next scene like that. This is cruel.

Stosh? What kind of white nonsense is that name? Also, Piz is not a name that a person would choose to go by. I mean, be honest, a person that chooses to go by the name Piz is gonna get called “piss” and “puss” and all related derivations thereof. That is just not something someone would subject themselves to willingly.

And here we finally have the mystery of the week. (Also, Piz is Bash on GLOW, so apparently this guy has a thing for characters with stupid names.)

And, holy crap, Veronica is actually getting paid for one of these things? It’s about time. As noted in the past she has been out a lot of money on a fair few of these cases with little or no potential of return. I’m glad she’s turned this into an actual business deal.

Jason Beghe, yet another actor who has a history of playing scumbags. He can’t be Keith’s bail jumper since he literally just walked out of a prison… unless he jumped bail in Mexico or something.

Mac’s back! And as predicted, Beaver seems to have successfully passed on his sexual dysfunction. And her roommate is the opposite. I’m guessing the new name in the credits to be this free-spirited lady. Does she have a ridiculous name too? Mulva?

So the Take Back the Night crew wants to shut down the fraternities? Has this been shown to help the campus sexual assault problems at various universities? Serious question. Like I understand the line of reasoning, that frats engender and compound attitudes and behaviors associated with toxic masculinity but has shutting them down helped?

Ski mask and Union Jack Speedo is Little Dick, right? Seems like a thing he’d do… actually, he’d probably do it without the ski mask... or the speedo.

So Jason Beghe is a Fitzpatrick? He seems kind of a lot older than Liam. Also, Liam is out to get Kendall now? Why? Because she couldn’t get the life insurance for both Casablancas boys? Or is it that she didn’t want to share? And if Liam is after her, wouldn’t it stand to reason that Cormac, here, could be as well?

Okay, well… that makes a certain amount of sense, I guess.

So Cormac saying that Kendall knows who she can and can’t trust means that she can’t trust him, right? Keith is unknowingly delivering Kendall’s would-be murderer to her hiding spot.

Parker, okay, not a terrible name.

So this kid with the info on the thieves who supposedly a townie from Neptune? Has this crazy thick Boston accent. It’s really weird since most actors on American TV have this trained, generic, bland Midwestern accent and now a kid who’s supposedly from Southern California is very obviously from Southie.

So the fat blonde girl isn’t actually fat, so she’s the sophomore Veronica was talking to when interviewing the other victims.

“The Needs Hosed Down,” is perhaps the aptest description of Little Dick Casablancas.

Donald Fagen? As in the lead singer of Steely Dan? That reference was too old for this show when it was new, much less Tumblr.

Yeah, I’m not sure what to think of Cormac’s quiet calm. Could honestly be that he’s learned patience in prison, that doing something is not always better than doing nothing… or it could be that Keith is the only person who knows where Kendall is and doesn’t want him to risk the desert for all the reasons he said.

So is Veronica honestly interested in the mentoring program or was this just a ploy to get into the files? Because she seems rather flush with extra-curriculars already, what with needing to help her father keep them fed and having a social life and all. But if she’s not, what’s the connection between this scene and the conversation with the other victim?

So Logan only barely got into this school and he’s chronically ditching class? Why go to all the effort to get in if you have no plans on actually doing anything?

Oh, Piz is wearing Duncan’s sweater! Okay. I was confused, because he clearly wasn’t, like, upset that Veronica was talking to another dude or whatever, but it took me a minute to work out what that look was.

AH! The Southie kid and his bros were a false lead! Okay. Veronica was not interested in the mentorship program. That was a misdirect to get this dude to admit that he knew and had access to juvenile offenders and their records.

Too soon, Piz! You are not a high enough level friend to unlock her tragic backstory! You know beyond a certainty that she has a boyfriend so fucking chill, my dude! Not even a little bit, huh? Not even a tiny drop of chill, eh? You should go to the store and get some, then, friend-o, because this is just coming on way too strong.

Yep. Cormac’s trying to kill her.

Scratch that. Killed her.

And now Keith is stranded in the desert. And Dick “messed up bad”… like Hearst Rapist Bad?

And Parker is the next victim… so not Dick then. That would be way too obvious. Serial rapists don’t knock on doors and linger far too long in hallways leaving themselves to be easily identified by a plethora of witnesses.

Again with the cliffhangers. This does not need to become a thing again this season. It gets old.

So this was a much better opener than was Season Two’s but then that’s hardly surprising, given that “Normal is the Watchword” was just a huge mess. Obviously, it’s benefitted by the Hearst Rapist story having already been set up last season, but the reintroduction of it here would have been a perfectly good introduction even if it hadn’t. The standalone mystery was a little thin, but that’s not surprising considering the show has to introduce two new main characters in the form of Parker and Boring Boy #4 (because Piz is a stupid name), as well as the professor, his TA, and the Take Back the Night team, all of whom are almost certainly going to be important as the season rolls on.

I’m not sure how I feel about Dick being turned into an actual character with actual depth. Like, on the one hand, all of last season he basically existed to show us the audience how much worse he is than Logan to make Logan more palatable a match for Veronica, now the show wants us to actually care about him. It didn’t work when they rebooted Jackie’s character, not sure this is going to come out any better. On the other hand, if he’s going to stick around past the end of last season, then I guess they should at least do something to justify the screen time he’s taking up.

Weevil’s still in the credits despite him being arrested for… they didn’t say, but conspiracy to commit murder is what he’s guilty of. Though I don’t think they could make that stick without also arresting and convicting the actual killers, The Fitzpatricks. So I guess it was just an assault charge, in which case, he could be out in time to still be part of the story… so where is he?

She sounds narcissistic, I wonder if hey memory problems are unconciously selective. Wherein memories that contradict her false self image are simply ‘forgotten’.

She has difficulty with memory in aspects that have nothing to do with remaking reality, and dementia is in her side of the family--it is legitimately something she experiences and is scared of, fairly so. I have no doubt that she doesn’t remember every time she claims she doesn’t. I’ve seen too much forgetfulness over the last few years to believe otherwise. She hasn’t done anything about it as far as I know (I don’t mean treatment, but seeking a diagnosis to give herself and her family context) but it’s real.

I want to be cautious about using the word “narcissistic” because folks with NPD often get treated quite horribly as a result, even though there’s a difference between someone being narcissistic and someone having NPD (not to mention that a lot of discussions about narcissism tend to be shockingly ableist about NPD in specific and personality disorders in general). I think it’s easier just to judge her based on her actions alone: they’re abusive.

But does she have a remarkable ability to forget things that don’t serve her? Oh, yes. I mean, on Tuesday she closed the back door when the air con was on, and when I told her that she needs to not close the door (it’s evaporative air con and if the door’s closed, there’s a seal that makes opening/closing any other door in the house impossible, aside from risk of mould) she told me that of course she didn’t do it, even though she was the only person who went outside after the air con was turned on. She didn’t even apologise after I said this. The first words out of her mouth are always the ways in which she is innocent or that she remembered to do something another time so the time she forgot just doesn’t matter. Unless it’s very minor, or something happened in which no way could it be her fault (in which she’ll give you a massive lecture on her innocence and how dare anyone think she be anything but) it either didn’t happen or wasn’t her, no matter the evidence otherwise. It means there is no way in which I can ever have a conversation about her failings, and Dad backs her up.

(Like today Dad told me I also remembered the conversation wrong, and didn’t hear Mum say that my aunt’s tablet only had a front-facing camera, even though Dad wasn’t in the room for the whole conversation.)

And so many of the things she forgets have a not-coincidental relationship with comments and actions that have hurt me. Like she doesn’t remember Dad pinning me against the wall even though being shoved made me knock a statue over, which broke. The statue is still in our lounge room, glued together, but in Mum’s world, Dad didn’t get so mad he physically assaulted me. (Who knows how the statue got broken to her?) Or it doesn’t matter she forgot to close her bedroom door when donning perfume today because she remembered the other day, even though her perfume is a migraine trigger and my health is dependent on her doing so. (I really feel loved when my parent chooses smelling nice over my health. Yet Mum has stopped using a cleaning spray that was making Dad feel sick, but not wearing her perfume.) Mum didn’t pressure me into doing my deb, Dad never ranted at me because the sleeve of my long-sleeved T-shirt came down past the sleeve of my jumper, so on and so forth. I can never talk about how much these people have hurt me because it just didn’t happen, and while I don’t believe that to be deliberate, it’s so hard.

(They actually are better than before I moved out the first time. I will give them that, and I do appreciate their providing of a roof and food and internet, giving me a space to be while my pain stops me from doing so much. I just wish their generosity didn’t have to come with so much awful attached.)

But as someone who has spent a lifetime desperately apologising to people and reassuring them that it’s me for a variety of reasons related to being mentally ill, autistic and in chronic pain, I find it unbearably offensive to see her constantly push the “I don’t remember so you’re wrong” line--it hurts me in ways beyond the mere gaslighting. I never get to stop apologising for my disabilities, never, so it’s a slap to the face on a whole other level to see her use hers this way.

Although I will say that Mum isn’t alone in being spectacularly awful about being disabled: Dad has hearing loss, enough that it is impacting his day to day life, and instead of going to the doctor and investigating a hearing aid so that he might hear better, he rages at everyone else for not speaking clearly enough. You can imagine that my autistic self catches the worst of this, since I struggle to speak clearly, especially when tired or stressed.

I wish I had the magical ability to not react, but I don’t. Sometimes I do, no matter how much I try, and it makes everything so much worse. All the psychologists who talked to me about just not reacting never quite understood that I don’t have an allistic’s control over my tearducts and hands and words, that sometimes I’m reacting before I have a choice in the matter, and however I react to anything, it’s always in ways that make everyone else angrier still at me, because Dad is allowed to rage about my not speaking clearly enough, but I can’t flap my hands and run from the room when I’m angry.

And it started pouring rain here, so I couldn’t go out anywhere after all, and I’m stuck in my room with nothing to eat. Fuck my life today, honestly.

But he considers the Six his closest friends, and when you narrow it down further, Alice is like his little sister, and Guillermo’s... well, he’s Guillermo. have as many friends as you want: yes, he’s fine with his current numbers. have something to make a scene in public about: He doesn’t really make scenes, or like people who purposefully do make scenes for the thrill of it. It’s excessive, idiotic and narcissistic (no one cares about your shit Jan go get laid and shut up) so everything that annoys him in people. have something to give your life for: Guillermo. Alice, and anyone he really cares about too. have major flaws: Oh yeah. He’s prone to mood swings, falling into his typical moods and worrying people around him with that, even if on the outside he’ll appear normal. He’s constantly in denial whenever something major and emotional comes up - he just sort of retreats into his safe bubble and convinces himself everything is just fine, even though it isn’t. He knows he should’ve done some things long time ago, but he just puts them off. He blames himself for things that were never even his fault in the first place. He’s terrified of change because in his mind something bad will happen, and it’ll go downhill from that. He will freak out if something happens to the person he loves, and there are things he’s way too pedantic about, but those are not as major. There’s vengeful tendencies inside him, so it’s better to not cross his paths because when he gets pissed off, it gets nasty. have something you pretend or try to care about: Irrelevant problems of random people in the bar - we get it Jan, your carpet doesn’t match your curtains, who gives a shit about you not having a sense of style? Also, sometimes Alice’s rants about random things he really isn’t very invested in, but don’t tell her that, he’s becoming really good at pretending he’s listening. have an image you project: Yes and no, everything he is is actually himself, but it’s just certain things that he doesn’t let show to everyone that complete his entire self. He used to project everything he was back at MIT, trying to fit in, but even then, he mixed it up with what he truly was - after all, there’s too many sides of him to just say ‘oh this one is the real one’ have something you’re afraid of: yes, as mentioned above think you’re polite or rude: If you asked him this personally he’d reply with “I have no interest in being polite or heterosexual.” He’s cocky and sarcastic most of the time, but he’s only truly rude if the person is exceptionally annoying.

LAYER SIX: FAVORITES

favorite color: green favorite animal: dogs, but also wolves and horses, don’t make him choose favorite movie: Schindler’s List, also anything with Alain Delon (god he’s hot), but don’t tell anyone favorite game: listen, if it involves alcohol, he’s in. He’s not against Uncharted and Assassin’s Creed either, or correcting the mistakes in them song: Don’t make him pick, just come to his bar and listen band: Seriously? Okay fine Pink Floyd stands out. But then so does Queen, and The Who, and the Smiths, and the Beatles, Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, what’s the point of this again? outfit: Black leather jacket, a black v-neck, black jeans, black combat boots. If everything on him is black, he assumes it must look good. Also silver rings. And his fingerless gloves. The Whole outfit goes together with his, you guessed it, black ‘69 Mustang. place: Athens, 5th century BCE memory: Savouring everything they felt in the seconds after the explosion, the realisation it did not kill them, Guillermo holding him, feeling of his lips against his own, his taste, letting go of their pretences even for a second. It was the first and last kiss they shared, and however painful and surreal it might seem (Astor still wonders if it even happened, or if he imagined it in the commotion that had ensued) it’s one of his most treasured memories, and he’s only afraid he’ll forget it. But its close second is the moment Guillermo let him open his eyes to the house ha had bought him, and told him it was now his. person: Guillermo show: couldn’t possibly pick. Mr Robot’s pretty good?

LAYER SEVEN: AGE

age: looks 25, but he’s actually 79 date of birth. 18th May 1938. day your next birthday will be: Friday, 18th of May zodiac sign: Taurus age you lost your virginity: 17 does age matter: obviously not, he’s technically 79. But he does believe he wouldn’t have much in common with someone who’s walked the earth for 18 years - he’d give them a chance though, if they’re brilliant enough. Still thinks it’d be a bit strange, though he’s been hit on by 18 year olds before, makes sense given the way he looks. And he’s slept with much older people, so yeah, it doesn’t matter.

LAYER EIGHT: PERSONALITY

Even when he felt like he had lost a part of himself, he still did everything to help whoever he could with his powers, even at the risk of his own life. Nowadays, it’s not as apparent, but Astor still can’t handle anyone’s suffering, and his compassion is still very visible when it comes to people he trusts and cares about. He tries to appear as if he’s careless, but that’s just appearances projected for the world to see. He will be there for the people around him, it’s something he can’t, and doesn’t want to change. empathy: having experienced pain and loss and misery himself, he can empathise with a wide variety of troubles, and he will do so if he’s cares and trust the person he’s being weak around. Even when he’s not completely sure about the person, if they’re truly suffering, he won’t be able to stop himself from experiencing their pain, it’s a physical, reflex reaction, especially when it hits close to home. creativity: he’s very creative, and has always enjoyed it - from music to art to literature. He keeps hundreds of journals from his travels and his studies, and there’s always a part of his soul that sneaks inside of them, because however scientific he can get, he’s a creative creature, who sees the world in colours and fragments of beauty, written pieces mixing with drawings, as haphazard as his thoughts are. Still, he’s able to adjust to any given situation, if he sees some benefit to it. passion: he’s always been a passionate creature, he doesn’t know how to care about things in moderation. He sees the world as a place of limitless possibilities, and he tends to see something worthy in everything he sets his sights on. Perhaps his greatest passion is science, with its infinite possibilities and limitless challenges, but there’s a passion for all things beautiful in him - art, literature, music, doesn’t matter - he will talk about it all like it’s the only thing worth talking about. And people, when he loves, he loves fully and without restraints. It’s a matter of self-assurance too, he’s never been fond of depending on anything other than himself. battle skill: also considerable, though he’s built it over the years and didn’t have it prior to his travels. He’s good with a gun, product of his years travelling through war times and saving people - he figured time travelling wouldn’t get him out of everything. But most of his skills comes from martial arts, something he’s always been rather fascinated with - though he mainly trained to be able to defend himself, there’s a part of him that loves the structure of it, the right use of the human body to shape it into a weapon, the sheer sense of control and being one with his body that it gives him. He’s more proficient with cold weapons rather than guns though, and he prefers to mix that with with his martial arts skills. agility: again, good agility as a result of his dabbling in different martial arts that required him to develop it anyway. strategy: he’s an excellent strategist, and will prefer to use his brain to get to something, since that is, after all, the sharpest part of him. It’s better if he can detach himself emotionally from the problem and work on it with a clear look on the logical sequence of events, but that does get rocked if he’s extremely emotionally involved, like if someone he loves is in danger. In that case, he’ll probably do a few rash things, before the cold fury sets in, and that’s when he’s at his most dangerous.   teamwork: he’s good at pretending he’s good at it, obviously, but he’s a person that best functions individually or with one other person that he can be around for longer periods of time. He supposes that’s why he sort of established himself, as the team leader - he had the charms to make it work, and he wasn’t all that interested in being just another piece of the puzzle. But even if he doesn’t particularly like working in teams, he knows sometimes it’s the only way, and more minds working on one problem can do much more than a single stubborn one. But it’s not as strong as he likes to think - he has a short fuse when it comes to certain situations, and there’s always things he uses as crutches to get him through life - morphine for his nightmares, alcohol and nicotine. intelligence: very high, as is the intelligence of every single one of the Six, and he’s improved the raw basis of it by building it up over the years. So there’s that natural intelligence, coupled with proficiency in a wide variety of fields, from scientific to the cultural ones. He’ll be able to hold up hell of a conversation, no matter what you ask him about, and he will enjoy it if the other person keeps up too. It’s probably his favourite thing about himself, and there’s that childish happiness to him every time he gets to add to it. It might seem silly, but he believes the knowledge he gains over his life is the only way to honour the life he was given. wisdom: debatable. He’s seen enough violence and death and suffering to recognise shifts in society that are bound to lead to nothing good, and he’s lived through enough to have attained a certain wisdom that comes with age. But he wouldn’t call himself wise per se, he doesn’t bother enough with it anyway. He wants to live, not be sage, and being wise about everything would just limit him. It’s not wise to drink. So what? It’s fun. dexterity: he’s mainly right-handed, but he’s taught himself to be ambidextrous with time (though not fully). He owes most of it to decades of playing a wide variety of instruments, mainly the piano and the violin, to the point he can play the hardest, fastest pieces with ease. Part of his obsession with excellency, he supposes. constitution: if he’s anything, it’s masterful at hiding what is truly happening beneath the surface, sometimes even from himself. Right now, he’s sane enough - New Orleans has become his home, a safe place in all of space and time that he knows he can return to, that he knows Guillermo will be in. But that’s not to say he’s not struggling with denial, that he’s not dicking around and drinking and focusing on the wrong things because he’s not willing to face his true feelings, and the sum of all the time that has passed, scratches at the back of his mind constantly, until it turns into a vicious cycle. His fear of the cancer returning, and the fact he’s lied about it for all those years to people he loves, the frequency of his nightmares, what it takes to keep them at bay, his occasional mood swings when he doesn’t eat and doesn’t sleep and acts like it’s fine and dandy - it’s not like he’s unaware of it, although he sometimes thinks it would be better if he were unaware of them. Astor has his demons, his memories, the guilt for everything that has happened - and it never quite leaves him, even if he might seem perfectly fine on the outside, when you see him leaned against the bar, drink in hand, smirk on his lips as he listens to the music, laughing at someone’s joke. If one asked him, he’d say he’s a work in progress. Though he has no idea which direction that progress is going in. As for his morals, that’s a Pandora’s box no even worth peeking into because it’d never be fully explained. Having lived through so much, Astor’s built an intricate set of his own rules, and he follows them faithfully - most of them ethically correct, some of them debatable - but they are his, and he believes in them, and if he finds one to be wrong, he’s willing to change his ways to fit what is right, nothing else quite matters. Not even laws, not if they’re morally wrong. It was once morally wrong to be gay and his father actually tried to convince him of that - how was that any good? charisma: ah, he would chuckle at this part. He believes it to be an art as well as a natural talent. He’s always been charismatic, even as a child, but most of what people see today is a reflection of who he became as years went by. He’s always had a self-assured air about him, a bit arrogant, but mysterious enough to draw people in. Some because he seemed like an exotic creature, some because they saw an intellectual equal to him. In the past, past of his charm was that golden boy look he had, all fine clothes and even finer manners, the sort of persona that was hard to hate. Now, one would think it’d be easier to hate him, considering the sarcasm and the general sharpness of his look - but he’s as charming as ever. Attentive to anything and everything the other person says, no matter how insignificant they might be in the grand scheme of things, he remembers names and details perfectly, and people always like to be remembered. He smirks and he smiles and he flatters, there’s something charming before and after every one of his sarcastic remarks, if he’s going for the charm - if he’s not, then it’s just dry sarcasm. But it’s not quite fabricated. There’s truthfulness to it - if he seems interested, it’s because he genuinely is, because he always has been interested in people’s stories, even his carelessness is the sort that’s not entirely off-putting, because one can tell that even though he’s lounging lazily across the chair, he’s listening to absolutely everything. He supposes there’s always been a certain charm to danger, to coming close to it, and that’s just part of it, the other part of it is intelligence. That never goes out of style, let’s be real here. Especially when it’s ruthlessly sharp.

LAYER NINE: FINISH THE SENTENCE

LAYER TEN: FAMILY

relationships: he hasn’t been in a real relationship, ever. He has no particular interest in getting into one anyway, unless it’s the certain person he has in mind when someone says the word relationship. parents: Heiner Adler and Izabela Nowak-Adler   siblings: none children: none, as far as he knows anyway, but he was always very careful favorite childhood memory: He has very few of those, but he does remember when he was 7, the wife of his father’s friend took him with her around New Orleans and it was the first time he saw the place, different from what it is today. She was a New Orleans native, and his father was in a meeting for the day, and since she instantly fell in love with how polite and sweet of a kid he was, interested deeply in the history of the place, she decided to take him around, and he treasures the memory dearly because back then he thought it must’ve been what it would feel like to have a mother. She was a sweet older woman, childless herself, and later on she would often take him around places like that, whenever her husband and his father met up, and he still sometimes goes back into the past to visit her, pretending to be around 25, passing nearby, and they go to museums or just walk around, even though he’s painfully aware at some point he’ll have to stop because it would get suspicious how he manages to visit her so much in a matter of a few years. favorite childhood toy: Newton’s cradle and a masterfully carved wooden horse figure his mother gave him before the war. The cradle was hers and she gave it to him because he kept playing with it in her office, and the carved horse she got from her own father, and gave it to Astor when he was old enough to play with it. Both the horse and the cradle still stand on his own desk at home, and he’s very fond of them, he always has been. Not because they were shiny toys, but because they were there for him through everything, a reminder that she was real. embarrassing story: When he was 17, and he slept with a girl for the first time, her parents unexpectedly came home and he had to get out of the house as fast as he could so he tried doing it by climbing out of the window, but he failed miserably, fell, broke his left arm and then they had to take him to the hospital. Sure, her father got mad, but her mother could not stop laughing as they were driving him there, and she kept apologising because he was obviously in pain, but it was still funny as hell because her husband had done the same exact thing when they were their age and she didn’t understand what was the big deal or why Liz’s dad was so angry. Sure, it was embarrassing for him, but he still adored Liz’s mother, because he thought she sounded exactly the way his mom would sound if she had seen that happen. favorite family member: his mother a story about that family member:  His mother showing him around around Kraków before the invasion, he had time travelled into the past, knowing full well it was a gamble whether his mother would believe him or not. But he looked far too much like her, and she was far too dreamy, not to believe the possibility of it, and so they spent a week just walking around, or driving in carriages, her telling him about her childhood, him telling her about his life.

How To Become a Professional Animal Communicator – My Story

Have you ever thought about becoming a professional animal communicator?  

If you love animals and you know how to talk to them, the idea of making a living as a professional animal communicator talking to pets can be very exciting! 

You know your animals have secret lives, thoughts, feelings and wisdom. Professional animal communicators are trained to be able to hear them, understand them, and communicate with them so they share their innermost thoughts.

I’ve been working professionally as an animal communicator since 1993.  And at this point in my career, I’m well respected as one of the top people in my field.  I’m a frequent guest on radio, I’ve been on tv, I’ve written books and am a contributing author to other books, and I’ve been a columnist for several publications.

I love teaching and working with people and animals all over the world, sharing the animal’s voices and wisdom, bringing more balance, peace of mind, joy and love into the hearts of my fellow animal lovers.

But it hasn’t always been this way.

Back in the early 1988, I started my own corporation doing market research and I was miserable.  It was a company I’d created after I graduated college with the help of 2 of my college professors and several of my student colleagues. Although I was pretty good at it, it didn’t make my heart sing.  And after 4 years of being in business, we closed the doors because I was dying inside.

I had contracted Lyme Disease and was very ill, in chronic pain, and I was getting sicker as time went on.  I was also married in an abusive relationship.  It was a very painful, difficult time in my life.

I didn’t know exactly what I was going to do, but I decided that whatever work I did do for the rest of my life would have to be meaningful in some positive, world changing way.

I wanted to do something that made a difference AND that made my heart sing.  

So I began praying and researching to find something I could do that would make that happen.  In all of my soul searching, I realized that the only area of my life that had consistently brought me joy was being with animals.  So I decided then and there to do something to improve the lives of animals in whatever way I could.

That single decision point opened up a whole new world for me. 

The first time I actually heard an animal talk was if it were a person talking to me….

I was with a friend who does animal body work. She wasn’t able to get a large knot to release from the mare’s hip she was working on. I heard the horse, named Valkyrie, make a comment about something my friend and I were talking about and I was startled, thinking “Who was that?”

Then I realized the horse was communicating with me!  

So I asked some questions to see if what I was hearing was accurate. It was.

Then I asked Valkyrie about her hip injury, and she ended up sharing with me the original experience and what happened. It felt very visceral to me as she was describing what had occurred.

Miraculously, as the horse shared her story with me, the muscle knot began to melt and disappeared completely right before our eyes!

My friend was so impressed, she started taking me with her to see her other clients. We discovered that my work communicating with the animals before, during and after her hands on work made a huge difference with the animals and their recovery process.

One day she took me to an Pre-Olympic Trial Dressage Competition at the San Antonio Rose Palace. 

While I was there, I met a Frenchman named JP and his extraordinary Grand Prix dressage horse. When JP heard that I could talk to horses, he immediately wanted me to work with his horse.  It turned out that Okzident would behave perfectly in practice, but would mess up his cues in the show ring.  JP couldn’t understand it.

So I asked Okzident what the deal was and what he told us was brilliant and to the point.

He said that he was tired of being overworked, that he wanted to be acknowledged for a job well done, and that he wanted an apology.  He knew that the only time he could “get back at” JP was in the show ring where he couldn’t be punished, and so he deliberately sabotaged their performance out of his anger.

When I told JP what his horse had told me, he offered an insincere apology to which Okzident turned his backside to us and swished his tail!

Once JP calmed down and considered what Okzident had to say, he realized that his horse was right on all accounts.  He offered a true apology the next go around to which Okzident went to him, put his head on JP’s chest over his heart, and accepted it.  They went on to win their competition!

Early the next morning I was awakened by a phone call from JP asking when I could come to Houston.  He had other horses and riders who needed my help!  And that was when I decided to go professional.

JP introduced me to Shirley Johnson who had competed in the Olympics. 

Shirley had gotten an expensive young Trakhener gelding and he was not doing well in training. She brought me in to work with him and I evaluated him.  Then, they brought in a vet specialist vet who also evaluated him.  Our findings were 100% in agreement, except for the 1 additional thing I found that the vet had no way of testing for.

Another very valuable Arabian dressage horse had almost torn his hind foot off in a trailering accident.  But he was so unpredictable, dangerous and fussy, usually there was no way that my bodywork friend could safely access the area she needed to work on without being in fear for her life.  In fact, she’d already told the owner that she wouldn’t work with him anymore.

Well, she thought that there was a chance he might cooperate if I worked with him first.  So she asked me to let him know what she was going to do and why she was doing it.

I carefully explained what we wanted to offer him, and asked him if he wanted the help.  I asked him to make certain promises of good behavior because she literally had to lay under his belly and get between his hind legs to reach the area to work on it!

He happily shook his head up and down, lifted his hind foot up where she could look at it, and then took a statue pose from which he did not budge one inch during the session.

I’m delighted to tell you she was able to do just that and he was completely cooperative. Instead of being retired and living in pain the rest of his life, he recovered and began competing in dressage again.

This was the start of an incredible journey working professionally with animals all over the world. 

I went on to work with world class Grand Prix dressage horses, hunter jumpers, cutting horses, and every horse in-between.

And of course, I’ve also worked with thousands of dogs and cats and birds and rabbits and ferrets and elephants and….  

I love my work, I love my clients, and I love the transformation I’m able to facilitate for them on so many levels.  Learning to communicate at the heart and energetic level, how to really listen to others, to grow spiritually and become enlightened through our interactions with the animals who share our world is often an epiphany experience… and I get to share that right along with each of my clients.

In my work with 10,000’s of animals it has been my experience that our animal friend’s issues are typically one or a combination of these four things:

An emotional issue

A health issue

A management issue, such as inappropriate training, wrong diet, wrong equipment, etc.

An emotional or health issue that is going on with YOU that your animal is reacting to negatively

Until there is direct clear communication with your animal, it isn’t possible to really know:

What they are feeling, feeling or experiencing

If there are other unknown factors

What happened from their unique viewpoint

Where they actually hurt, what kind of pain is it

What helps or doesn’t, and what makes things worse

What is truly needed, wanted and appreciated

What you, their caretakers, connection and involvement is and how humans contribute to the problems

How we can best assist them in recovery

Whether their saddle, bit, bridle, or other equipment is truly comfortable or if it’s interfering with their ability to focus, concentrate and perform to the best of their ability.

Not answering these issues can cause disease, illness, mystery health problems, and behavior challenges, if it’s not taken care of properly and in a timely manner when it first crops up.

We do know that your animal always does what seems right to them — from their own viewpoint. They always do what makes sense to them.

But without communicating specifically and directly with your animal, we won’t know exactly what’s really going on, or how best to resolve things.

After many years of solving problems with animals, I realized that I had created a unique proprietary system I call the HEART System™.

Briefly, the five key steps to solving any problem with every animal, the HEART system, are:

H – Hear:  first we need to hear your animal – invite them to tell us what’s important to them, if they’re in pain, are confused, suffered a traumatic experience, what they need

E – Evaluate:  next we need to evaluate their body, their management, their diet, their training program to be sure it’s right for them

A – Action Steps:  What action needs to happen to support them and you in creating the relationship of your dreams, to solve any behavior or training problems, to improve their health and well-being, to synchronize you with your animal so you can come into true partnership

R – Clear Resistance:  Change tends to create resistance, might feel risky, it can be emotionally charged, not logical, is fear based, yours and theirs.  If either of you is afraid, either consciously or unconsciously, then nothing you do together will be safe or easy.  So let’s clear that so you can get to the really good stuff.

T – Establish Trust:  everything you do with your animal revolves and centers on Trust.  If you’ve lost your animal’s respect, lied to them, didn’t follow through on a promise… from their viewpoint you are out of integrity and not to be trusted.  If that’s the case in your relationship, then you have some work to do to reestablish trust.  The good news is that when you know how to listen, to respect and to communicate with them, that goes a very long way in helping your animal decide if they can trust you.  And once you have trust back as a foundational part of your relationship, your animal will love you for it and will be that much better and be even more forgiving of your mistakes.  Plus, when you’re linked at the mind and heart, everything you do together gets WAY easier, is a lot more fun, and becomes a joyful experience.

How To Become a Professional Animal Communicator – My Story

Have you ever thought about becoming a professional animal communicator?  

If you love animals and you know how to talk to them, the idea of making a living as a professional animal communicator talking to pets can be very exciting! 

You know your animals have secret lives, thoughts, feelings and wisdom. Professional animal communicators are trained to be able to hear them, understand them, and communicate with them so they share their innermost thoughts.

I’ve been working professionally as an animal communicator since 1993.  And at this point in my career, I’m well respected as one of the top people in my field.  I’m a frequent guest on radio, I’ve been on tv, I’ve written books and am a contributing author to other books, and I’ve been a columnist for several publications.

I love teaching and working with people and animals all over the world, sharing the animal’s voices and wisdom, bringing more balance, peace of mind, joy and love into the hearts of my fellow animal lovers.

But it hasn’t always been this way.

Back in the early 1988, I started my own corporation doing market research and I was miserable.  It was a company I’d created after I graduated college with the help of 2 of my college professors and several of my student colleagues. Although I was pretty good at it, it didn’t make my heart sing.  And after 4 years of being in business, we closed the doors because I was dying inside.

I had contracted Lyme Disease and was very ill, in chronic pain, and I was getting sicker as time went on.  I was also married in an abusive relationship.  It was a very painful, difficult time in my life.

I didn’t know exactly what I was going to do, but I decided that whatever work I did do for the rest of my life would have to be meaningful in some positive, world changing way.

I wanted to do something that made a difference AND that made my heart sing.  

So I began praying and researching to find something I could do that would make that happen.  In all of my soul searching, I realized that the only area of my life that had consistently brought me joy was being with animals.  So I decided then and there to do something to improve the lives of animals in whatever way I could.

That single decision point opened up a whole new world for me. 

The first time I actually heard an animal talk was if it were a person talking to me….

I was with a friend who does animal body work. She wasn’t able to get a large knot to release from the mare’s hip she was working on. I heard the horse, named Valkyrie, make a comment about something my friend and I were talking about and I was startled, thinking “Who was that?”

Then I realized the horse was communicating with me!  

So I asked some questions to see if what I was hearing was accurate. It was.

Then I asked Valkyrie about her hip injury, and she ended up sharing with me the original experience and what happened. It felt very visceral to me as she was describing what had occurred.

Miraculously, as the horse shared her story with me, the muscle knot began to melt and disappeared completely right before our eyes!

My friend was so impressed, she started taking me with her to see her other clients. We discovered that my work communicating with the animals before, during and after her hands on work made a huge difference with the animals and their recovery process.

One day she took me to an Pre-Olympic Trial Dressage Competition at the San Antonio Rose Palace. 

While I was there, I met a Frenchman named JP and his extraordinary Grand Prix dressage horse. When JP heard that I could talk to horses, he immediately wanted me to work with his horse.  It turned out that Okzident would behave perfectly in practice, but would mess up his cues in the show ring.  JP couldn’t understand it.

So I asked Okzident what the deal was and what he told us was brilliant and to the point.

He said that he was tired of being overworked, that he wanted to be acknowledged for a job well done, and that he wanted an apology.  He knew that the only time he could “get back at” JP was in the show ring where he couldn’t be punished, and so he deliberately sabotaged their performance out of his anger.

When I told JP what his horse had told me, he offered an insincere apology to which Okzident turned his backside to us and swished his tail!

Once JP calmed down and considered what Okzident had to say, he realized that his horse was right on all accounts.  He offered a true apology the next go around to which Okzident went to him, put his head on JP’s chest over his heart, and accepted it.  They went on to win their competition!

Early the next morning I was awakened by a phone call from JP asking when I could come to Houston.  He had other horses and riders who needed my help!  And that was when I decided to go professional.

JP introduced me to Shirley Johnson who had competed in the Olympics. 

Shirley had gotten an expensive young Trakhener gelding and he was not doing well in training. She brought me in to work with him and I evaluated him.  Then, they brought in a vet specialist vet who also evaluated him.  Our findings were 100% in agreement, except for the 1 additional thing I found that the vet had no way of testing for.

Another very valuable Arabian dressage horse had almost torn his hind foot off in a trailering accident.  But he was so unpredictable, dangerous and fussy, usually there was no way that my bodywork friend could safely access the area she needed to work on without being in fear for her life.  In fact, she’d already told the owner that she wouldn’t work with him anymore.

Well, she thought that there was a chance he might cooperate if I worked with him first.  So she asked me to let him know what she was going to do and why she was doing it.

I carefully explained what we wanted to offer him, and asked him if he wanted the help.  I asked him to make certain promises of good behavior because she literally had to lay under his belly and get between his hind legs to reach the area to work on it!

He happily shook his head up and down, lifted his hind foot up where she could look at it, and then took a statue pose from which he did not budge one inch during the session.

I’m delighted to tell you she was able to do just that and he was completely cooperative. Instead of being retired and living in pain the rest of his life, he recovered and began competing in dressage again.

This was the start of an incredible journey working professionally with animals all over the world. 

I went on to work with world class Grand Prix dressage horses, hunter jumpers, cutting horses, and every horse in-between.

And of course, I’ve also worked with thousands of dogs and cats and birds and rabbits and ferrets and elephants and….  

I love my work, I love my clients, and I love the transformation I’m able to facilitate for them on so many levels.  Learning to communicate at the heart and energetic level, how to really listen to others, to grow spiritually and become enlightened through our interactions with the animals who share our world is often an epiphany experience… and I get to share that right along with each of my clients.

In my work with 10,000’s of animals it has been my experience that our animal friend’s issues are typically one or a combination of these four things:

An emotional issue

A health issue

A management issue, such as inappropriate training, wrong diet, wrong equipment, etc.

An emotional or health issue that is going on with YOU that your animal is reacting to negatively

Until there is direct clear communication with your animal, it isn’t possible to really know:

What they are feeling, feeling or experiencing

If there are other unknown factors

What happened from their unique viewpoint

Where they actually hurt, what kind of pain is it

What helps or doesn’t, and what makes things worse

What is truly needed, wanted and appreciated

What you, their caretakers, connection and involvement is and how humans contribute to the problems

How we can best assist them in recovery

Whether their saddle, bit, bridle, or other equipment is truly comfortable or if it’s interfering with their ability to focus, concentrate and perform to the best of their ability.

Not answering these issues can cause disease, illness, mystery health problems, and behavior challenges, if it’s not taken care of properly and in a timely manner when it first crops up.

We do know that your animal always does what seems right to them — from their own viewpoint. They always do what makes sense to them.

But without communicating specifically and directly with your animal, we won’t know exactly what’s really going on, or how best to resolve things.

Some of the main benefits an expert (professional) animal communicator can help you with are:

Know what is happening with your animal- get to the root of any problem

Shorten recovery time

Resolve training problems

Solve health problems – illness, digestive problems, mystery lameness, skin problems, and other equine problems

Improve performance and show horse scores through animal communication

Deepen your relationship so that you both experience the joy and magic of feeling connected as a synergistic team

If you have an animal that is not doing as well as you think they might, then you owe it to them to give them a voice through animal communication.

When you take the time to listen to what your animal is trying telling you, then you can always achieve much better results.

After many years of solving problems with animals, I realized that I had created a unique proprietary system I call the HEART System(tm).

Briefly, the five key steps to solving any problem with every animal, the HEART system, are:

H – Hear:  first we need to hear your animal – invite them to tell us what’s important to them, if they’re in pain, are confused, suffered a traumatic experience, what they need

E – Evaluate:  next we need to evaluate their body, their management, their diet, their training program to be sure it’s right for them

A – Action Steps:  What action needs to happen to support them and you in creating the relationship of your dreams, to solve any behavior or training problems, to improve their health and well-being, to synchronize you with your animal so you can come into true partnership

R – Clear Resistance:  Change tends to create resistance, might feel risky, it can be emotionally charged, not logical, is fear based, yours and theirs.  If either of you is afraid, either consciously or unconsciously, then nothing you do together will be safe or easy.  So let’s clear that so you can get to the really good stuff.

10 biggest NBA trade deadline takeaways

ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED? IS THIS NOT WHY YOU ARE HERE?!?

After countless visits to the Woj bomb shelter and copious mashing of the F5 button, this year’s NBA trade deadline is now in the rearview mirror — but not before New Orleans became a Boogie Wonderland, Jeanie Buss executed Order 66, and Danny Ainge slept through all of his alarms yet again. As the salary cap dust finally begins to settle, let’s go for a deep dive into the 10 biggest takeaways from Trade SZN 2K17.

1. The Southwest Division has become a meat grinder

In their shocking acquisition of three-time All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins from the SacrHAHAHAHAmento Kings, the New Orleans Pelicans managed to melt our faces off and give the ultimate middle finger to small-ball all at once. Cousins will join forces with Anthony Davis to form what is easily the NBA’s most fearsome frontcourt duo since Tim Duncan and David Robinson, and he very well could lift the team to a Godzilla vs. King Kong-esque clash of styles against the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the playoffs.

But while the Cousins bombshell dominated all of the headlines, the Houston Rockets upgraded their own weapon system by trading for former Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams, a top-tier bench scorer and yet another threes-and-free-throws enthusiast to toss into Daryl Morey’s cauldron. And with the omnipresent San Antonio Spurs again cruising to a 60-plus win season, the Memphis Grizzlies modernizing nicely, and the Dallas Mavericks somehow still kicking, we may officially have a new Division of Death in the Association.

2. The East is now as wide open as it’s been in years

A faint glimmer of hope shines intermittently in the distance to signal the possible end of LeBron James’ reign of terror over the Eastern Kingdom. That glimmer may actually be the Ibaka Flocka Flame that the Toronto Raptors lit this trade deadline, a get that should improve their spacing and help remedy their chronic problem of bleeding easy buckets at the rim in crunchtime. Their late addition of P.J. Tucker as a LeBron-stopper of sorts has the potential to be huge as well, especially he was had for the price of a negative asset in Jared Sullinger and a pair of inconsequential second-rounders.

But don’t sleep on the Washington Wizards either now that they no longer have a cardboard cutout of a second unit thanks to the acquisition of Bojan Bogndanovic from Brooklyn. Bogdanovic’s friskiness off the bounce and his 36.6 percent career mark from deep give the Wiz a legitimate sixth man instead having to trot out The Ghosts of Power Conference Studs Past in Trey Burke and Kelly Oubre Jr. Now as long their starting five continues to swipe lunch money, Washington is set up to a be yuge headache come playoff time.

And to think that we haven’t even gotten to the team that’s mathematically closest to the Cavaliers yet…

3. The Boston Celtics are still waiting for the right time to pounce

“This will be the year that Danny Ainge finally awakens from his trade deadline slumber,” we repeated to ourselves as we slowly rocked back and forth in the fetal position. But alas, Ainge has once again taken the advice of the Magic Conch Shell and done nothing.

Paul George? Sike. Andre Drummond? Ask again later. Jimmy Butler? LOL.

In fairness, there’s not as much urgency to deal for a superstar when the Celtics have already witnessed one emerge in-house this season in Mighty Mouse Isaiah Thomas. Ainge may also want to see a healthy Avery Bradley get more reps with this current core and wait to see where that much-ballyhooed Brooklyn pick will actually fall so as to make a more well-informed decision about the future of his team. But time is of the essence with the Cavaliers, who are just three games ahead of Boston entering the second half of the season, beginning to show signs of mortality, so it’s still tough to justify the Celtics sitting on their hands instead of throwing them.

And since we keep mentioning those pesky Clevelanders…

4. The Cavaliers are walking a dangerous tightrope

LeBron James just hit all of his prospective playmakers with a resounding “It’s not you, it’s me.” Granted, a pre-deadline move was a longshot with the capped-out, asset-deficient reality the Cavs were forced to work with, especially since they gave up what little they had left to acquire sharpshooter Kyle Korver. But it’s still a highway to the danger zone to maintain status quo when the roster only runs six or seven deep right now thanks to the respective injury absences of J.R. Smith and Kevin Love.

Fortunately though, deadline inaction is far from nuclear Armageddon for the Cavs. The buyout market is still a viable place to acquire cheap, albeit exiled, talent in order to retool for a playoff run. Ditto for the often-overlooked 10-day contract cycle, which they recently took advantage of with the signing of ex-No. 2 overall pick Derrick Williams. So while time is very much ticking on Cleveland, there’s still an ample amount of sand in their hourglass, and hopefully that means their title defense doesn’t fall flat (no pun intended).

5. Several more months of Carmelo Anthony rumors await us

#StayMe7o he did indeed, much to the chagrin of those of us who felt compelled to bang our heads repeatedly against our keyboards thanks to the constant bombardment of Carmelo chatter and the gross societal overuse of the phrase “no-trade clause.” Well, those therapy sessions now look like a pretty darn good investment with Anthony surviving the trade deadline and ensuring that many more months of Melo-brand Instagram shade, indecipherable Phil Jackson subtweets, and Spike Lee sideline struggle faces are looming on the horizon to assault the senses of the NBA fandom.

Where do the Knicks go from here? At 23-34, they’ve all but clinched another season of futility. Meanwhile, Derrick Rose will likely be gonzo after the year, but Joakim Noah will still be around to clog cap, and Kristaps Porzingis will continue to have his development stunted by the team’s Melo-centric offense. Then draft season arrives followed shortly after by the 2017-18 campaign, and we fire up the Anthony hot stove all over again. Are we having fun yet?!?

6. The Lakers are done playing games

Jeanie Buss means business if you didn’t gather from the Red Wedding she stunningly pulled on her brother Jim and Mitch Kupchak just 48 hours before the deadline. The same goes for Magic Johnson, who, upon ascending to his new perch as Lakers president of basketball operations, traded away Lou Williams, got the team involved on the Paul George front, and took calls on Nick Young, all faster than you could say “Abdul-Jabbar.”

Now none of those moves were game-changers in and of themselves, but they affirmed one message to Laker Nation: our long national nightmare is over. Johnson is already working to rebuild the franchise’s reputation in the eyes of marquee talents and scheming with new GM Rob Pelinka and the rest of the front office to put the Lakers in a position to realistically and financially be able to acquire that talent. So rival executives best be vigilant of no-look passes zipping by their ears, because it’s Showtime in Los Angeles again.

7. Doc Rivers is perfectly content to run it back again

Another team somewhat surprising in their silence this year was the Los Angeles Clippers, who took a pie to the face last deadline by swinging an eleventh-hour deal for Jeff Green, who played for the team for all of two months, in exchange for Lance Stephenson and a future first-rounder. Welp.

Perhaps the sting of that belly flop of a trade necessitated the exercise of more prudence this time around, but the Clips are in a good spot regardless. Merciful point god Chris Paul is on the verge of an early return from injury, and Blake Griffin has been Hellboy in basketball form since his own return.

While the temptation to gauge themselves against Golden State and panic into a Carmelo Anthony-type deal must have been enormous, there’s intrinsic value in the 2011 Dallas Mavericks model of keeping a nucleus intact for several seasons in the hope that they can eventually break through the glass ceiling. Though the Dubs have all but assured that the ceiling [commander-in-chief voice] just got ten feet higher, it sounds like that’s the conventional wisdom Doc Rivers is going for here.

8. The cavalry is coming behind Russell Westbrook

Those 10,000 “Save The Brodie” shirts I ordered off eBay were not purchased in vain.

Though the loss of Westbrook’s blood sworn dance partner, Cameron Payne, is absolutely devastating (not really), the reinforcements have arrived for our beloved triple-double addict. Doug McDermott will offer Billy Donovan a versatile offensive threat to close games with in those situations where the foul stench of Andre Roberson’s jumper is too much to bear. The addition of veteran forward Taj Gibson should also unlock a number of juicy tall-ball lineups next to Steven Adams in case rookie Domantas Sabonis isn’t ready for the bright lights of the postseason or if Enes Kanter isn’t the same upon returning from his upholstery-related injury.

All things considered, the cost is quite minimal for the Thunder. Joffrey Lauvergne proved to be little more than a 6-foot-11 whoopee cushion in the increased opportunity presented by Kanter’s absence, and Payne is a low-upside option at a position of abundance who simply hasn’t looked serviceable since undergoing foot surgery. With the Thunder only 3.5 games out of a top-four seed in the West, let Westbrook’s piercing battle cry shepherd the weak through the valley of darkness.

9. Is The Process still being trusted?

The trade of Nerlens Noel to Dallas was a bolt from the blue, especially since he had finally appeared to find his calling as a defensive dynamo sixth man for the Sixers. In selling off Noel, a Day One Process OG, is Jerry Colangelo beginning to trample all over the carefully-crafted sandcastle that his predecessor, the Honorable Sam Hinkie, built?

In conjunction with their earlier trade of Ersan Ilyasova to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for the injured Tiago Splitter and two future second-rounders, Colangelo seems to be presiding over a radical shift in team-building strategy by the Philly front office. Gone are the days of building exclusively through the draft in favor of clearing out roster space and cap room, perhaps to work more closely with the free agency pool in future years.

With that in mind, dealing Noel, who is due for restricted free agency after the season, makes at least a remote inkling of sense, even if it’s still difficult to justify the late 180 of choosing to keep Jahlil Okafor over Noel. So while I can at least somewhat understand why Colangelo pulled the trigger, as a fanatical disciple of the Holy Gospel according to Hinkie, I can never forgive him.

10. Paul George survives the deadline

As it turns out, Larry Bird was just teasing us all along. Though the PG-13 fever dreams abounded from Boston to Los Angeles, George remains with the Pacers through the deadline. It’s an interesting way for Indy to maintain the outward appearance of long-term commitment to the four-time All-Star while also gathering intel as to what his trade value might be over the summer and come next season.

In the end, it stands to reason that the time wasn’t ripe for the picking to move George. The Pacers are still a playoff team and George is under contract through 2018. But as Carmelos and Butlers before us can attest, this by no means symbolizes the death of the rumor mill, for George or other potentially-available stars. So as winter gives way to spring gives way to the playoffs gives way to the summer, there shall be no rest for the weary. Long live the National Basketball Association.
