Masculinity Report, USA 2018
While we hear much discourse about the negative aspects of military service on men’s mental wellbeing – with suicide and PTSD never far from the headlines, especially after tragedies such as the recent Thousand Oaks mass shooting in California – the Harry’s Masculinity Report points to clear evidence that military service lifts men’s Positive Mindset Index. This fits perfectly with our broader findings that being part of something bigger that matters beyond the individual – “not self but country,” or “band of brothers” sentiment – is entirely in keeping with increased male positivity. It appears the residual pride, values, appearance, structure, self-worth, and patriotism reside long after active service ends. There seems to be evidence that the US forces can “build better men” – and perhaps this could be the basis of an armed forces recruitment/advertising campaign? Conversely, we know that former servicemen can often experience mental health difficulties associated with their lived experiences. This can later be exacerbated to a point where their sense of masculinity means they “bottle up” their feelings or self-medicate with alcohol or substance abuse. These are the men we need to reach out to, and say “it’s strong to talk, to take mastery and control over your destiny”. Here, other servicemen are the mental health role models they are most likely to listen to: strong men like them. All of that said, the findings regarding PMI and military service are intriguing and deserve further research in order to fully understand this phenomenon. Ethnicity & sexuality 2. Inner health is key A bespoke US study for Harry’s, in partnership with Dr. John Barry of University College London, exploring positive masculinity in 21st Century America.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In September 2018, research led by Dr. John Barry, Honorary Lecturer at University College London and co-founder of the Male Psychology Section of the British Psychological Society, and ethically approved by University College London, was conducted.
The aim of this academic survey was to identify the values and priorities of American men and the factors which contribute to their emotional, physical and mental health and wellbeing. In a comprehensive, intimate survey of 5,000 male respondents aged 18-95 spread all across the United States, subjects were asked first to gauge their Positive Mindset Index (PMI) which was determined by asking men about their happiness, confidence, sense of being in control, emotional stability, motivation and optimism.
Respondents were then asked about how satisfied they were with key areas of their lives, such as careers, work/life balance, relationships, money, physicality and mental health. Finally, to ascertain what kind of men they aspired to be, we asked them which core values they truly held dear.
By cross-analyzing all of this rich data, we were able to construct a comprehensive picture of who the most positive American men were: what they did, how and where they lived their lives. On the whole, we discovered that modern American men are doing pretty well – and absolutely stand for something commendably selfless, as opposed to selfish.
Forget unattainable celebrity lifestyles or chasing physical perfection: regular, stand-up guys and team players are the happiest men of all. The values American men most aspired to are those of everyday heroes: fathers, father figures, respectful co-workers, mentors. These are hardworking, loving, friendly men with a social conscience, which is great news for the men, women and children of America.
The report mirrored The Harry’s Masculinity Report 2017 conducted in the UK on 2000 British men, but the American report went into even greater depth, asking questions on military service, gender identity, sexual orientation, political affiliation, employment status, educational level, and population density. As such, The Harry’s Masculinity Report 2018 stands as the most comprehensive, ethically-approved academic study of American masculinity on record.

PART I: KEY FINDINGS
The modern American man is a moral man. When asked what characteristics he aspires to, he chooses values that put the needs of others over his own. At the top were – honesty, reliability, dependability, being respectful of others and loyalty. At the bottom was athleticism (having a perfect body), proving the route to genuine contentment is who you are on the inside – not how you look on the outside.
America’s most content men have good job satisfaction, value their health, have a good income, are over age 50 and are married.
American men are largely happy, with an above average Positive Mindset Index (PMI), and typically have a more positive outlook on life than men in the UK.
The strongest predictor of a positive mindset in men – by far – is satisfying employment. Hard work is the cornerstone of a contented man that all else is built upon.
Significantly, American men now place more importance on their mental health than their physical health, while appreciating the two are fundamentally intertwined. Older men, especially, are tuned into the needs of their minds, as well as their bodies and souls.
The third driver of positivity is income, and while it may be true you can’t buy happiness, the contentment of providing for others, especially one’s family, is a central pillar of American men’s sense of positive purpose.
Next is health, and across the board is driven by, in the following order, good grooming, eating well, living longer and exercise.
Men’s mental health is also related to connecting with others through sports, and connecting with friends by listening and giving advice.
In terms of relationship status, forget the myth of the carefree bachelor. Across the board, married men are the happiest, with this especially being true in the South.
Things can only get better! As men mature, their positivity rises and they become more likely to have a healthy and positive outlook on life. The over-50s were the most content group.
In terms of sexual orientation, heterosexual and homosexual men (who made up 11% of the sample) scored very similar levels of PMI (3.7 v 3.6). Can we take this as a positive sign that gay men are feeling more self-contentment and pride than in the past generations? However, a note of concern. Some 14 respondents indentified as ‘non-binary’ and 10 as ‘female to male transgender.’ The mean PMI score of non-binary participants (3.02) and especially female-to-male transgender participants (2.63) spell out significantly lower levels of wellbeing compared to the other participants. These findings have important clinical implications for non-binary and transgender men. These are populations, who, although smaller in number, are more likely to need mental health support.
PART II: WHAT GIVES AMERICAN MEN THE GREATEST SENSE OF WELLBEING?
1. Men at work: the dignity of labor
Men at work are men at peace: everything else flows down from satisfying employment. Men who have high job satisfaction are more likely to feel optimistic, happy, motivated, emotionally stable, in control and confident.
Job Satisfaction is by far the strongest predictor of positivity, being around three times higher than the next strongest predictor in every region and across the US overall. And this isn’t primarily about money, rather making an impact on a company’s success was the main predictor of job satisfaction.
96.4% of those with the top job satisfaction rating had normal or better levels of mental positivity compared to only 49% who gave the lowest rating for their job satisfaction. It, therefore, stands to reason that getting men into gainful employment is the best route to improving their positive mindset. This is not “greed is good”. It is difficult to conceive of these findings as pathological expressions of greed, workaholism, shallow ambition.
2. Inner health is key
Health – both physical and mental – was the second highest predictor of positivity across the US (interestingly, in the UK, it was being in a stable relationship: the more committed the man, the happier he typically is).
Perhaps surprisingly, grooming – taking care of our appearance - was the strongest driver of positivity. A breakthrough moment that should afford great hope is the emphasis American men place on their mental health. Across every age group, American men placed greater importance on their mental health than even their physical health. Across all men, 52% said their mental health was “very important” compared to 43% who said the same of their physical health.
In the UK, the most open about mental health was the 18-29 group, but in the US it is the over 60s (55.6% deemed mental health very important). This shows great awareness around age-related mental health issues, such as dementia, and shows senior citizens have a commendable openness to mental health that sets a shining example for younger men.
3. Men mature like fine wines
Men get happier as they get older, with men in their 50s at “peak positivity”. We found a clear correlation between age and well-being. This should encourage younger men to relax and the rest of us not to dread old age. According to American men, the future does look rosy! Perhaps we can (and should aim to) help younger men plan for future happiness by learning from happier older men. This should give great comfort to younger men: the future isn’t something to be feared but relished
4. Men in stable relationships
Being married was the fifth highest determinant of positivity in American men, showing men who are married have greater well-being than others. Interestingly, in the UK it was the second most important factor in British men’s happiness. Married men are the most positive, closely followed by those who are going steady or cohabiting. Single men are the least happy, worse than divorcées or even widows.
5. Friendship: the importance of buddies
Men who value friendship, family and sports and leisure have greater wellbeing. Sports – especially team sports – provide key benefits including, in order, socializing, feeling healthy and competition. Among the factors which were relatively unimportant to men were: winning; developing an attractive physique or ‘being skillful.’ As the old cliché would have it, it really isn’t the winning, it’s the taking part that counts.
This isn’t just about feeling healthy and fit, but also competing, being a team player and being sociable. When asked for details, the men who talked of health and fitness in this context specified not only the benefits to their own physical health but also to their mental health, alongside the importance of staying fit and healthy for the sake of their children and families.
The social side of sports – playing in/for a team, the banter and perhaps even a cold beverage afterward – is three times more important to men than having a good body. Team players, not vain loners, are happiest.
6. Other noteworthy findings
Military Service
It’s official: the Harry’s Masculinity Report shows that being a member of the US’s armed forces – both past or present – is related to a higher Positive Mindset Index. Men currently on active duty have the highest PMI, and even those on active duty in past but not now have higher PMI than those with no service history. Our sample included men with various amounts of experience of military service. Some 22% of our respondents had previously served active duty (1,045 men); 2% (94 men) were currently on duty and 3.6% had undergone basic training. Some 3,863 had never served in the US or other Armed Forces. Overall, military service was the seventh highest predictor of PMI, proving military service is a significant determinant of positivity. It’s especially valued in the Midwest, where it ranks sixth as a predictor of PMI.
Political Leanings:
Republicans are more positive Belonging to any political tribe gives a PMI boost. Men who voted Republican were generally more positive than Democrats. Voting Republican was the 11th highest determinant of positivity – higher than education level. While you’d expect men supporting a reigning President to be more positive, might this indicate that Democrat men are feeling the blues of the Trump administration? Overall, Republican voters have highest PMI, followed by Democrats, then Independents. All have better PMI than those who say no party represents them. Presumably, the latter feel a bit disenfranchised, which cannot be good for PMI.
Ethnicity & sexuality
Differing ethnicities or sexualities appeared to have no discernible impact on wellbeing in American men. There was no statistical evidence to point to white, heterosexual men being significantly more positive than any other demographic, although being white correlated to increased wealth.
PART III: REGIONAL VARIANCES
While positivity was typically standard across the US, there were some interesting variances that should give food for thought. Our data was split into “all US” and then four regions, namely Northeast; Midwest; West and South, and multi-variant analysis offered up some fascinating differences.
Being married was a significant predictor of PMI in the South, but not elsewhere
Friendship was a strong predictor in the West but not elsewhere
Being aged over 50 was a significant predictor in the West and especially the Midwest
Sports & leisure was a significant predictor in the South, borderline in the Northeast, but not elsewhere
Good pay varied in importance widely across the regions, from the top in the Northeast to fourth in the Midwest
Chat with co-workers was a significant predictor in three of the four regions, and a nonsignificant predictor in the West
In health, grooming was the highest predictor of PMI in the Northeast and West. “Living longer” mattered most in the Midwest, as did “exercise” in the South
Perhaps unsurprisingly, educational level was the highest determinant of salary in every US region, followed by being married, then being in full-time employment
In the Northeast, Midwest and South, “being white” was the fifth highest predictor of income, but did not feature in the South or West
PART IV: CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS
How can policy-makers, public services, charities and frontline professionals apply the findings of this research?
Across our research findings, the strongest single finding – by a factor of three – is that the happiest men are those who are happiest at work. This is not primarily about wealth, but a sense of making a difference, being part of something bigger and more meaningful.
The characteristics which mean the most to American men in 2018 are moral values, such as honesty and dependability, rather than physical traits such as a perfect body, showing that true contentment comes from within.
The lifestyle which is most effective at keeping American men happy, healthy and mentally robust is a combination of meaningful work that allows men to protect and provide for others, good health through a combination of good grooming (the exterior) and healthy diet and team sports (the interior), plus leisure and solid friendships that lay the bedrock of of a healthy social life. A winning Team America is made up of men who are team players.
PART V: MALE WELLBEING: SEVEN MAGNIFICENT PATHS TO INCREASED POSITIVITY
1. Get men into fulfilling work:
Across our research, by far the strongest finding was the importance of rewarding, secure employment to men’s health and wellbeing. Job satisfaction and the dignity of labor fulfills men’s desire to provide and protect. At the same time as noting that job satisfaction improves happiness, we should note the reverse: joblessness erodes the effectiveness of every significant protective factor and makes it harder for men to sustain a healthy, happy lifestyle.
Offering hope to these men is the most compelling clarion call of all, be it in the form of policy makers encouraging or incentivizing employers into socially deprived areas, or on an individual/community level by utilizing social networks, friends and the women in struggling men’s lives, who can lean in and be of assistance. Give a man a job he finds satisfying and you give him not only hope, but sometimes even a reason to live.
2. Health: Looking good and feeling good PART V:
Healthy men are happy men, but this is not about being a slave to a punishing or narcissistic physical routine, rather a more holistic approach to self-improvement. That journey begins in the morning – and the route to positivity could be literally looking at men in the mirror. In the category of health, good grooming was the highest predictor of PMI, proving good grooming isn’t about shallow vanity, rather it actually helps make men feel good about themselves. It’s beyond skin-deep. Clinically, it is important to remember that a lack of grooming can sometimes be an indicator of low mood.
The findings of this survey should highlight to therapists that a change in the grooming of their client might be a proxy measure of their mental positivity. Likewise, encouraging men to take care of their appearance might give them a psychological boost. Furthermore, healthy food and exercise, especially in a team/social environment, all add to this. Combine these factors and you have a template for elevated mood: the proof is in Harry’s data.
3. Support relationships and families
For every age group, being in a relationship (married, cohabiting, or going steady) made men happier compared to being single. This was true of parents and non-parents, although men with children are happiest of all. Men who lose contact with their children after a relationship breakdown are particularly vulnerable to poor mental health and even suicide. Supporting mediation services and the work of charities is essential for men’s wellbeing.
4. Embrace aging
With so much media emphasis placed on the power of youth, it was extremely gratifying to discover that men in their 50s are the happiest of all. Harry’s findings smash the cliche of the “mid-life crisis”. Instead, a man’s mid-life looks to be his happiest life. A public awareness campaign around this would be most welcomed.
5. Support Sports
Americans who value sports & leisure have a more positive mindset. Men’s mental health and wellbeing soar when physical health improves. In particular, men seem to benefit most from more sociable team sports. Providing facilities for these activities, and promoting their benefits to men of all ages would have extensive and far-reaching benefits, well beyond physical health and fitness. This is particularly true for individual men who are struggling with their mental health. We would encourage policymakers to encourage men to stay fit and well for the sake of their families and setting a good example to their children than they are about their own fitness or physique.
6. Promote the positivity of military service
7. Engage with men as they are, and as they want to be
When service providers seek to engage men, whether in health, education, community, voluntary activities or any other front of social policy, there is often a temptation to address either the problems men have, at best, or the problems men cause, at worst. Our findings strongly suggest that the values which men aspire to most are traditional, moral frameworks. Men want to think of themselves as honest, reliable, dependable and fair-minded and it is perhaps those traits which agencies should emphasize when they wish to earn the trust and co-operation of male service users.
Much previous research into masculinity has negatively focused on the problems men cause, often through the nefarious concept of “toxic masculinity”. This has never been more so than in this post-#MeToo landscape and after every mass shooting or domestic terrorist incident. Lately, the dialogue has expanded to include the problems men have: such as the male suicide epidemic, depression, anxiety and addiction, while offering scant few solutions.
But Harry’s wanted to progress this dialogue forward, by flipping the telescope and focusing on what gives men a positive outlook. We wanted to find out which American men were the most positive and content, then look at the core values and behavioral attributes that nurture these men’s mental wellbeing.
Next, we want to utilize these findings to formulate a roadmap to men’s contentment that could help others and help shape government policy around issues that affect men. What we found was that the overriding majority of American men aren’t “in crisis”. Rather, they aspire to be decent; they want to work, provide and nurture; they want to be loving, sharing partners and caring friends, and take care of their health and appearance. Crucially, American men are ready to open up about their mental health which we should see as a real opportunity to help tackle male suicide in particular.
Maybe it’s that when we see men playing/watching sports, or staying late at work, or not talking about their feelings like women do, that we see only one side of them and miss the rest. It could also be that men are too modest to show off how they really feel, and our survey has provided a rare insight into that aspect of the male psyche.

Thirty Four - H
Harry’s point of view. I was totally lifeless as the tour bus travelled to our next destination. My mind had become a bit of a blank slate, I wasn’t at all aware of where we were actually going. Usually, I kept track of it in my head, marked where we were and where we would be going next, but I was finding it increasingly difficult.
It had been a week since I had been around to Anna’s and ended things. Maybe even more importantly than that, it had been a week since I told her I loved her. I wished I had let her know sooner, that I could have told her that in a way that didn’t make the whole encounter seem twice as agonizing. Hearing her say in back was utterly excruciating. It felt like someone had thrust their fist through my chest and pulled my heart from its place. But instead of wishing I hadn’t said it at all, I just wished I had said it earlier. The day had been awful, the entire day was one I was desperate to forget. It started fully when I was released from the shared cell I’d spent my evening, cameras flashing in my face as I kept my head down and just walked to my private car, security trying to block the photographers from me, but the men did their jobs incredibly well, getting enough pictures to satisfy those who were interested in my misery. I told the driver of the car to drive me home, but our management had different ideas. I was drove to a building in the centre of London, one I was all too familiar with. Luckily there were no photographers there as I went inside, completely glum. They told me straight away I had to break up with her, that I had to end our relationship. I spent the whole day fighting them about it, the entire day trying to explain that she wasn’t who she was made out to be, and it wasn’t because of her that I’d lost my mind, but that didn’t make a difference to them. “If her image is bad, so is yours.” They’d said. When it came to her, I couldn’t have cared less if my appearance was dire, I couldn’t care less what anyone else thought, because I had her. I tried to explain that the attack I made on her prick of an ex was entirely of my own accord, that it had nothing to do with her, but they barely listened to me. Ignoring the awful aftermath of my actions, and the fact I didn’t have her, a part of me still couldn’t help but feel content that I had done what I did. If I could go back in time and change things, I would, she was more important than my anger. But the way things stood, fuck, it felt good to give that little prick what he deserved. I had this insane protective instinct when it came to Anna, and I couldn’t control it. I noticed it right away, as soon as she met the other boys I felt something overrun me, even Louis giving her a kiss on the cheek made me feel rather uncomfortable. The feeling was strange and foreign to me, I tried to brush it off, but I knew I was going to be very protective of her. She was mine to touch, and hold, and love, and the thought of anyone else being that way with her made me feel physically sick. I wouldn’t have been violent with that protection if there hadn’t been pricks that made me that way. It was something that happened in the parts of my mind and my body that I couldn’t control. It wasn’t my fault, and it definitely wasn’t hers. I tried to explain all of this to them, I tried to explain that people didn’t even know we were together and that it could stay that way, but they were having none of it. They knew about us, and it was enough. I began yelling, telling them they could go fuck themselves, telling them there wasn’t really anything they could do, it wasn’t like they could physically break us up or take me out of the band, we were earning them their money. But then they passed me a copy of the contract I had signed eagerly when I was child, and began explaining what they could do as I skimmed through the pages, my heart sinking as I did. They began to explain that they could stop paying me; they could literally, legally, get away with not giving me a single penny if I broke their rules. They could stop me from tweeting, stop me from associating with the fans in any way possible. They could stop me having time off, make sure I never even had the opportunity to see my family. And they were deadly serious. They didn’t care about me, they didn’t care at all. They just wanted their money. I wondered if general human decency ever entered their minds, even if it was just for a moment. My health and my wellbeing and happiness, were not factors they were going to take into consideration. They just cared about the money. The distant sound of someone saying my name made me lift my head and let her slip from my thoughts for a moment. Niall was sat across from me, concern plastering his features. “You okay?” He asked. All I did was shrug. I preferred it when we were busy, or when I was onstage and I could just take my mind off the scenario I had found myself trapped in. Being on the road with nothing to do made me crave her. “Talk to me.” He encouraged. “I don’t want to.” “I think you need to.” “I DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT!” I spat bitterly. Niall looked disheartened by my tone, like he’d taken it personally. I had never really spoke to him like that before, I never usually spoke to anyone like that, but my patience was wearing thin. I had no idea how I was going to get past this, how I was going to move on. “I’m just trying to help.” He drawled. I ran my hand over my eyes, trying to wipe away this constant sense of anger I’d had for the whole week. I really needed to try and move on. “Sorry.” I breathed. “I just don’t know what to do.” “I don’t think there’s anything you can do. But you can’t keep it bottled up, that’s what you did when you got scared of the fame, and when you were with Kate, and that was a really dark time for you. I don’t want to see you back there.” He was both stern and soft, having to be stern to show me that he was being very serious, that he didn’t want to see me fall back into a place that had made me very weak in the past, it had made me into a really horrible person, and the four lads had been the only people who could pull me out of the spiral. It wasn’t easy for them, either. “I just... I can’t believe I can’t be with her.” I sighed. “I’m not allowed to be with the person I love. It’s a fucking joke.” “Do you really love her, or did you just say it because you knew it was ending?” Niall asked. A part of me was angered by the fact he had questioned it at all, but then at the same time I understood where he was coming from. He knew I was upset, and he knew my relationship with Kate had no feelings involved whatsoever. He was just asking me because of what he had seen from me in the past, I couldn’t really be mad about that. I had to take a deep breath in before I replied to him. “I love her. I know I do.” “Holy shit. That’s rough.” Niall stated. “I know. How do I… How am I supposed to get past this?” “I guess... you just try to forget.” “I don’t want to forget.” “I know you don’t, Harry, but that might be the only way you can… be okay again. Right now, there’s not much else you can do.” I glanced out of the window, seeing the orange lights of the motorway pass by us in a flash, travelling through the dark night at a dizzying speed. I really didn’t want to forget about Anna and what we had shared. I didn’t want to forget her touch, or her skins reaction to my touch, or the beautiful XIII tattoo on the back of her neck. I didn’t want to forget anything, in fact I had promised myself that I would remember everything about her and what we had. But it occurred to me that Niall was right, I was torturing myself with memories and thoughts of her. If I wanted to get past these feelings, I was going to have to get past the feelings of love I had for her, and that meant I needed to try my best to stop thinking about her, to forget the way she looked when sleeping, forget the slight curve of her kiss, forget that I only cared to hear my own name when the sound slipped from between her lips. The task seemed impossible, but I had to try. “I’m knackered, man.” Niall began. “I’m gunna go to bed. You okay?” “Yeah.” I nodded. “Thanks for being here.” “Don’t mention it!” I was taken in for a hug, something that was often shared between the five of us. Sometimes it felt like they were the only people in the world I could rely on fully. They would always be the only people who could fully relate to me. We were the only ones who had gone through it all, and felt it all, right from the start. I would have been totally screwed without them. Niall eventually freed me from his tight embrace and said his goodnights, moving into the other section of the bus where the beds were, leaving me alone to become entranced by the passing orange lights once more. I’m not sure how long I sat there for just looking out of the window, but my mind was blank once again, nothing seeming to cross it as my eyes were flashed by the beams of light every few moments, crossing my eyes and leaving slight trails behind them, printing my vision for a second even when we had passed them, then slowly fading to nothing. I think I could have stayed that way all night if I hadn’t felt my phone vibrating against my leg, signalling someone was trying to get in touch. I wasn’t sure of the hour but I knew it wasn’t your average time for receiving calls, pulling the phone from the tight pocket of my jeans lifting it to my face, seeing who the caller was. Alex Turner. I wasn’t really sure why he was ringing, but I automatically predicted it was going to be something to do with Luke. I questioned in myself whether I should answer, I was trying to leave everything to do with Anna behind, just to help myself, just to make sure I got through these feelings. I ignored the call. But to my surprise, he rang again just seconds after his first attempt. I knew then, something was wrong. I swiped across the screen and then brought the phone up to my ear, sighing heavily before I did so, only now realising that I had become tired as the hours had passed. “How’s it going, Alex?” I asked right away. Silence pierced the other end of the line, making me lower my brows in confusion, only able to distinguish the eventual sound of a sigh, a desperately sad and frustrated sigh. I spoke his name again, signalling I knew he was there, and I needed him to talk to me. Still nothing other than a slight shuffling noise came from his end of the line. “Alex, what’s wrong? Is everything okay?” “No.” He eventually said. A sick feeling clung to the bottom of my stomach as my nerves heightened, my body becoming slightly hotter thanks to the feeling. “What’s going on?” I asked, trying to stay calm. “I’m sorry. I didn’t wanna have to do this. I don’t want… But you deserve to know. I get that things are fucked up, but you deserve to know. Fuck.” “Alex, just fucking tell me what’s happening.” “I didn’t want to have to ring you, I thought it would be sorted by now, but...” He trailed off, unable to say what he needed to say, unable to verbally face the situation. It was like actually saying it out loud was too much for him, it was confirmation that what he had to tell me was actually happening. “Is this to do with Luke?” I spat. “No. But... it’s Anna. Somethings happened. Something… I don’t…” My heart sunk, the thought that maybe she was hurt, or worse. Alex was so on edge, he could barely string a sentence together and I had never once had a conversation with him where he had struggled to hold himself. I was so worried. “What’s going on?” I interrogated. “Anna, she... She’s missing.” He eventually spat out. “What?” “She’s missing. We don’t know where she is.” “What do you mean she’s missing?” I cried. “It’s been almost a week and-” “A WEEK?” I yelled. My stomach was in knots, continuing to tie itself tighter and tighter by the second the more I thought about what he was saying. I blamed myself at first, the thought that a week ago I had ended our relationship and then she had gone missing, I thought she had done something stupid because of me. “We have the police looking for her but they’re struggling!” He panicked. “And I know how you feel about her, and you have the right to know!” “I can’t breathe.” I rushed to the nearest window and opened it just slightly, feeling the heavy wind rush against my skin as I tried to cool down and come back to life. “Has she hurt herself?” I worried, feeling tears form themselves. “No, Harry, it’s not like that. There’s something else. Something I haven’t told you.” “What?” “We found some letters. I thought they were from a fan but...” “But what?” I spoke with anger. “They talk about… watching her. In these fucking letters, this guys talks about… following her... and wanting to take her... and taste her... and...” Before I could even listen to another word my fist smashed against the glass window, the whole thing falling apart around the floor of the tour bus and onto the motorway, which was thankfully quiet thanks to the hour. The bus swerved, making it hard for me to stand for a moment before the driver pulled onto the hard-shoulder, cursing loudly and asking what the fuck had happened. But I couldn’t control it, tears angrily dripped down my face as I collapsed into the mass of broken glass, cutting through some of my clothes and some of my skin as I sunk into it, my heart seeming to be cut by the shards too. The door to the bedroom area opened quickly, the four boys watching me in horror as I cried out in pain, dropping my phone to the floor and clutching at my stomach. I could hear the boys trying to talk to me, Louis nervously stepping over the glass and crouching down in front of me so his eyes were level with mine, trying to get some words out of me and make sense of the situation but I just couldn’t stop crying, groaning out thanks to the agony that was breaking my heart. I had never felt anything like it in my life, I had felt awful enough about the way things had ended between the two of us. Now this. She was missing and they’d found letters that strongly implied that it was someone who had caused that, someone who had taken her, who could be hurting her, using her. If I had known I would have stopped this. I could have stopped this. I would have killed the bastard I would have made sure he could never lay a fucking finger on her. The thoughts then ran my mind of what if he hadn’t just taken her, what if he was hurting her. What if she was dead. As much as I wanted to explain to the boys what was going on, there wasn’t a chance I could speak in that moment, I was far too overawed and I was in far too much pain, my mind beginning to convince itself that she was gone. My own blood covered my hands, cuts being created and oozing the red substance, but a part of my mind still wanted to pick up some shards and squeeze them in my hand, tighten my fist around them, just to distract myself from the pain I was feeling on the inside and feel it outside instead. “I can’t do this...” I managed to blubber. “Someone call an ambulance!” Louis spoke calmly. That’s all I remember really, I think pretty soon afterwards I passed out, a mixture of all my emotions and my loss of blood taking over my body and taking me into a deep slumber, my body having nothing else to give in that moment.
How I had actually managed to function in any way whatsoever was a miracle. I got to the top floor of Anna’s building, my heart empty in my chest as I walked down the hallway towards her flat, seeing police-tape surrounding her front door. I had left the hospital and got a private jet from Manchester Airport straight down to London as soon as I could, making the promise I would be back there in the evening for the show. I didn’t want to disappoint the fans, and I knew there was nothing I could really do when it came to the Anna situation, but I had to be there, even if it was just for the day. I looked round the door which was open, police men and investigators inspecting the room as I silently stepped inside, completely dry of tears, my mouth dropped as I let myself in, sad eyes scanning the crime scene. One of the balcony windows was smashed open, its shards still on the floor. On one of the white walls of the hallway the word ‘six’ had been painted to the wall in red. I next dropped my eyes to two people inspecting a mark on the floor, which I quickly recognised as blood. I hoped the word on the wall didn’t come from the same substance, but I couldn’t be too sure. I tried to run, not being able to deal with the thought that it could be her blood, trying not to give my mind a chance to dwell on the information I was seeing, but someone calling my name stopped me in my tracks. I turned around to see Rachel walking towards me, tears brimming her eyes as she walked past the unwanted guests in her home and bolted to me, quickly wrapping her arms around my waist and bursting into tears, my body jolting back in shock. My arms hovered over her for a second, unsure where to place them or how to react to her body gripping to mine. But I soon placed them down, holding her back weakly. I was completely empty in that moment, my face lacked all emotions. I was drained. “I don’t know what to do.” She sobbed to my chest. “She’s been gone for a week I don’t know what to do!” I few mumbles emptied my mouth, but I couldn’t quite string a sentence together. I couldn’t have said anything to comfort her or myself, I was just as much of a mess as she was. I was losing my mind, I couldn’t even believe I had the strength to keep myself stood. Because of her hold on me, I had nowhere else to look other than the people inspecting the blood, using some kind of equipment to trace the splatters, concern running their faces. I felt so sick to the stomach, I just looked down, looking to the strands of Rachel’s dark hair instead. “They don’t know where she is.” She continued. “They can’t find her.” “I... I know.” I mumbled. “I’m so sorry.” She said, pulling away from me. I looked down to her shivering frame, confused as to why she was apologising to me. If anything, I felt as though I should have been apologising to her. For everything. “What?” I baffled. “I’m sorry. I know you loved her and-” “Loved?” I interrupted. “I love her Rach. Don’t say loved, please. It’s like she’s gone if you say that. Don’t fucking say that. Please don’t say loved.” “I’m sorry, Harry, but I can’t help it!” She said with her hand on her chest. “It’s been a fucking week now and we have nothing. What do you want me to think?” I covered my face with my hands, shaking my head, trying not to let her words infiltrate me, but her lack of faith was aching my bones and making me subconsciously agree with her. We both thought she was gone. Then the atmosphere changed even more so, as I coated man walked over to the two of us, a serious look on his face. “I’m sorry, but you two need to leave.” He said. Rachel shot her head round to look at him, still slightly riled up and upset, all her emotions getting the better of her as she snapped at him. “This is my fucking home, you can’t tell me to leave!” “I’m sorry, Miss, but you really have to go.” “What’s going on?” I asked breathlessly. “We’ve finally found some blood that isn’t hers.” My eyes widened, gently being pushed from the room backwards as he ushered us both out. My heart stopped beating for a few moments as I stared at him, my mind completely puzzled by what he had just said. “Wait... what?” Rachel gasped. He finally got us into the corridor, trying to slam the door in our faces but I didn’t let him. Anger crossed my body as I placed my foot in the doorway, stopping it from being slammed shut entirely as I gave him a piercing stare through the gap in the door, my nostrils flaring as I stared at the fully-grown man irately, trying to threaten him somewhat. “What does this mean?” I asked, austere. He sighed with slight frustration, knowing that he probably shouldn’t give me the information we were asking for, but he decided to just be decent about it instead, thankfully. “It means... there’s a chance we can find out who was here. We might even be able to find where they live.” I whispered a thank you, moving my foot from the door as he gave us a sympathetic smile, now gently closing it rather than slamming it in our faces. A slight glimmer of hope glazed over my body, the thought that they could find the sick bastard who had done this to the girl I loved, and he could get the punishment he deserved. And if we were lucky, we could find Anna. Alive.

How’s the precarity
The Andrews government in Victoria has announced $5m over two years to explore a public paid leave scheme for casual workers in particular industries with high rates of precarity, notably aged care, to discourage people going to work sick. This intersects with my long-term interest in the health and wellbeing of people in precarious migrant communities, including international students and skilled migrant workers.
In casual work, instead of the employer holding onto a certain amount of money in reserve, in order to pay you when you take sick leave or annual leave, the employer pays out a ‘leave loading’ — an additional percentage of the full-time hourly wage. The fantasy is that the employee saves that money themselves, so they can live on those savings when they are sick or not working. (I say fantasy, because so many people in casual work are underemployed and living hand-to-mouth.)
Why is it done this way? Because your employment as a casual worker begins when you arrive for your shift and ends when it finishes. Once your shift ends, unless you’ve been working in that role long-term, there is no obligation to employ you ever again. Nor is there any obligation to employ you for enough hours per week to live on. And that’s what makes the work insecure, and what makes the lives of casual workers ‘precarious.’
I’m going into some detail here because I’ve learnt, in my travels on social media, that many people simply don’t have a clear picture of how casual employment works. It’s not a part-time job with a steady roster, the kind that might have paid for your rent and beer money during your studies in the 1970s.
People going to work sick was seen as one of the major drivers of the outbreak of Covid-19 in aged care. As Rick Morton observes, even though aged care and industrial relations are both Commonwealth government responsibilities, Andrews has the moral authority to say ‘never again.’
I spoke with Rick for an article in the Saturday Paper, in which Sally McManus was also quoted, praising Andrews’ initiative for tackling the lack of entitlements. In my comments I argued that focusing on entitlements misses the bigger picture of insecure work and precarious lives.
“The challenge is the precarity, it’s not just the lack of entitlements,” he says. “They [workers] are not going to stay home sick if they fear that their employers are not going to employ them or not going to give them shifts after that leave has finished.”
As we’ve seen repeatedly with breaches of hotel quarantine, many people living precarious lives are working multiple jobs that don’t pay enough to live on. Under these conditions, taking unplanned time away from work might put two or three different sources of income at risk. So people go to work sick.
Don’t get me wrong — I think this is a step in the right direction. There are options for making this more than a bandaid solution. The Budget announced money for a scoping study, which could recommend making it illegal to vary or cut someone’s usual work hours after they take sick leave.
As I have experienced myself, though, it is not a practical remedy if we leave it to casual employees to bring complaints that will wind their way through civil law processes (industrial relations, discrimination complaints). It takes a lot of time, technical knowledge and energy, and you’re still unemployed.
McManus’ praise for Andrews also highlights an ambivalence at the core of modern Labor politics. Are unions just fighting for better entitlements for people in work? What about bigger picture questions about economic injustice? These require class analysis and radical politics and the ACTU just doesn’t go there.
Labor has long struggled with ‘the migration question’ because it recognises that precarious migrant workers are being exploited—but at the same time, it sees the migrant work stream as a strategy for driving down wages and entitlements of Australian citizens in ‘real jobs.’
Closely interwoven with these questions of industrial strategy is the history of anti-Asian racism in Australia, and new questions about soft power initiatives of the People’s Republic of China.
For all of these reasons it’s easier to focus on paid sick leave, even as the Andrews government adopts the rhetoric of tackling ‘toxic’ insecure work.
We might imagine that offering paid sick leave serves a dual purpose, reducing the impact of precarity while ensuring people don’t bring contagious pathogens to work with them. So this looks like a form of epidemic governance wrapped up in a social justice initiative. Win-win, right?
In this post I’ve made a point of separating insecure work and precarious lives. In most cases, they go together. But precarious lives encompass everything necessary for people to cope with insecure work.
For precarious migrant workers, this means relying on friends and family for access to resources like informal childcare, and community for cultural connection while living with Australian racism.
In turn, this generates patterns of social connection that can facilitate epidemic transmission without individuals in those communities ‘doing the wrong thing’ at any higher rates than any other community group.
Covid-19 escaped from hotel quarantine into a population of precarious migrant workers at a time when the Department of Health and Human Services had diminished local insights and relationships with the communities involved, followings decades of contracting out engagement in dribs and drabs of time-limited project money to funded agencies.
That’s why I expressed the concern that, following the crisis, the new Department of Health (DH) will revert to standard operating procedure, using a rhetoric of localism to justify a practice of contracting-out that has contributed to the second wave outbreak. As I put it:
“A whole bunch of people [at DH central] are about to lose their jobs at the same time as the government is going to do its favourite thing, which is contracting out to local [agencies] to do their own contact tracing.”
I know that doctors in general practice and community health are extremely keen to play a greater role in contact tracing. In most cases, they already have the trust and rapport that are essential if we want patients to give a full picture of their movements. We’ve just seen how important this is in the contact tracing failure that led to South Australia’s abortive lockdown.
But it remains vitally important that DH central has its own strong and up-to-the-moment engagement with communities. This means that when crisis strikes, it understands the communities involved and it can pick up the phone and speak directly to the people who make a difference in them.
In a broader sense, we should ditch the rhetoric of tackling insecure work and precarity until we have a specific proposal on the table for abolishing casual work.

Boost Your Well-Being - How Your Attitude to Health Can Help
What is Health?
How Can you define health? Can it be a state of complete physical, psychological and societal well-being? Can it be just the absence of illness or infirmity? Or is health a source for everyday life, instead of the aim of living; a positive idea, emphasising social and personal resources in addition to physical capacities?
Fantastic health is harder to specify Than poor health (that could be equated with the existence of disorder ), since it has to communicate a concept more favorable than simply absence of disorder, and there's a variable area involving disease and health. Health is obviously a complex, multidimensional idea. Health is, finally, poorly defined and hard to quantify, despite remarkable efforts by epidemiologists, critical statisticians, social scientists and political economists. Each person's health is shaped by several things, including medical attention, social conditions, and behavioral decisions.
Health Care
Even though It's a good idea to state that healthcare is the prevention, management and treatment of illness, and also the preservation of mental and bodily well-being, throughout the services supplied by the health, nursing and allied health professions, medical behaviour depends upon our own worth, that can be influenced by upbringing, for instance, by experience, from the company one keeps, from the persuasive power of advertisements (frequently a force of behavior that may damage health), also by successful health instruction. Healthy people can mobilise their bodily, psychological, and spiritual tools to boost their odds of survival, to stay happy and fulfilling lives, and to be of advantage to their dependants and culture.
Reaching health, and Staying healthy, is an energetic procedure. Natural health relies on avoidance, and on maintaining our own bodies and minds in great form. Health lies in balancing those facets in the entire body by means of a regimen consisting of exercise, diet, and regulation of all their emotions. The last of them is too frequently ignored when health information is dispersed, but may have a pronounced impact on bodily well-being.
Diet
Each Day, so it sounds, new study indicates that some facet of lifestyle - physical activity, diet, alcohol intake, etc - influences health and wellbeing. Physical fitness is great physical health, and that is the end result of regular exercise, good nutrition and diet, and appropriate rest for physical healing. The discipline of nutrition also studies foods and nutritional supplements which enhance functionality, promote wellness, and cure or protect against disease, for example fibrous foods to decrease the chance of colon cancer, or nutritional supplements with vitamin C to strengthen gums and teeth and to enhance the immune system. When working out, it becomes much more important to have a fantastic diet to be sure the body has the right ratio of macronutrients whilst providing ample micronutrients; this will be to help the body in the healing process following strenuous exercise.
If You are attempting to shed weight by simply"dieting", do not call it a diet plan, first of all - effective dieters do not call what they do a"diet". A wholesome diet and regular physical activity are equally important for maintaining a wholesome weight. Even literate, well-educated individuals occasionally have misguided views about what constitutes or keeps them healthy, often thinking that regular daily exercise, regular bowel movements, or even a particular dietary plan will alone suffice to maintain their wellbeing. Regardless of the ever-changing, ever-conflicting views of those medical specialists regarding what is good for us, 1 facet of what we eat and drink has stayed constantly agreed by a balanced diet plan.
A balanced diet Includes a combination of the key types of nutriments (carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals, and vitamins). Appropriate nutrition is just as, if not more, important to health as exercise. If you are worried about being obese, you do not have to bring the additional strain of"dieting". No more"low-fat this" or"low-carb that"; only healthy eating of smaller parts, with weight loss being a satisfying complication. Enhance health by eating actual food . (For a lot of reasons, not everyone has easy accessibility to incentives to consume a balanced dietplan. But those who consume a well-balanced diet tend to be healthier than people who don't.)
Exercise
Physical exercise is Considered significant for maintaining physical fitness and general wellness (like healthful weight), constructing and maintaining healthy bones, joints and muscles, promoting bodily well-being, reducing health risks, and strengthening the immune system. Aerobic exercises, like walking, swimming and running, concentrate on increasing cardiovascular endurance and muscle density. Anaerobic exercises, such as weight training or sprinting, enhance muscle mass and stamina. Appropriate rest and healing are also as important to health as exercise, otherwise the human body is present in a permanently wounded condition and won't improve or adapt satisfactorily to your exercise. The above two variables could be jeopardized by emotional compulsions (eating disorders, like exercise bulimia, anorexia, and other bulimias), misinformation, a lack of organisation, or a lack of motivation.
Consult your Physician or Physical therapist what exercises are right for you. Your physician or physical therapist can recommend certain kinds of exercise, based upon your individual circumstance. You can use exercises to keep strong and limber, enhance cardiovascular fitness, expand your joints' range of motion, and reduce your weight. You should never be too busy to exercise. There's always a way to squeeze in a little exercise, no matter where you are. Eliminate one or maybe even two items from your busy schedule to free up time to fit in some exercise and some "YOU" time. Finding an exercise partner is a common workout strategy.
Emotions
You may have heard about the benefits of diet and exercise ad nauseam, but may be unaware of the effect that your emotions can have on your physical well-being and, indeed, your longevity. Like physical health, mental health is important at every stage of life. Mental health is how we think, feel, and act in order to face life's situations. Prolonged psychological stress may have a negative impact on health, such as weakening the immune system.
Children are particularly vulnerable. Caring for and protecting a child's mental health is a major part of helping that child to grow into a normal adult, accepted into society. Mental health problems are not just a passing phase. Children are at greater risk for developing mental health problems when certain factors occur in their lives or environments. Mental health problems include depression, bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness), attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, schizophrenia and conduct disorder. Do your best to provide a safe and loving home and community for your child, as well as nutritious meals, regular health check-ups, immunisations and exercise. Many children experience mental health problems that are real and painful, and they can be severe. Mental health problems affect at least one in every five young people at any given time. Tragically, an estimated two-thirds of all young people with mental health problems are not getting the help they need. Mental health problems can lead to school failure, alcohol or other drug abuse, family discord, violence, or even suicide. A variety of signs may point to a possible mental health problem in a child or teenager. Talk to your doctor, a school counsellor, or other mental health professionals who are trained to assess whether your child has a mental health problem.
Control your emotions. If a driver overtakes you on the wrong side, or pulls out of a side road in front of you, don't seethe with rage and honk your horn; You're hurting no one but yourself by raising your blood pressure. Anger has been linked to heart disease, and research has suggested that hardening of the arteries occurs faster in people who score highly in hostility and anger tests. Stay calm in such situations, and feel proud of yourself for doing so. Take comfort in the knowledge that such aggressive drivers only increase their own blood pressure. Your passengers will be more impressed with your "cool" than with your irascibility.
If you are in a constant rush, feeling that every second of your life counts, just slow down a little. Yes, every second does count, but consider the concept of quality of life. Compare how you feel when you're in a hurry with how you feel when you're not. Which feels better? Rushing everywhere increases your stress level. The body tries to overcome stress by making certain physiological adjustments. Some time after you slow down, the physiological adjustments and the stress symptoms revert to normal. If you don't ever slow down, the physiological adjustments and the stress symptoms persist. It is this persistence of the body's response that matters. You may develop physical, physiological or psychological problems, and may not be able to lead a normal life. Many cases of stress are somehow connected with money, or rather the lack of it. Such people struggle to make ends meet or to acquire more material possessions. This brings us to our final discussion: attitude.
Attitude
It is always pleasant to enjoy the fruits of our labours, of course. Sometimes, however, it seems that whatever we do, it's just not enough to be able to afford that new car or that foreign holiday. So, what do we usually do then? We work harder, longer; we increase the stress on our minds and bodies; we spend less time with our families and friends; we become more irascible and less likeable people. If you find yourself in this situation, just stop for a moment, and consider: Is it all worth it? What is the purpose of life? Surely it is to be happy. You'll probably be happier if you adopt the philosophy that true quality of life is not to be found in material things. If you convince yourself that you want less, you'll need less. If you need less, you'll cope with life more easily, and the happier, and therefore healthier, you'll be. Buddha called this "enlightenment". Enjoy a"good-health mindset". Focus on your abilities rather than disabilities. Be happy with what you've got, as opposed to be dissatisfied of what you do not have and likely never will have.
If You just can't cope with a wholesome diet, exercise and psychological Control, but really prefer to consume crap food, be permanently drunk, be Under continuous anxiety, and be disliked by other people, then enjoy your own life Once it continues, but realize the trade-off is the fact that it will Likely not survive long. Should you take this voluntarily, you are going to be happy. There's some virtue in the doctrine It Is Far Better to live a short, Joyful life than a long, gloomy one.
