i just saw a post saying dune should never have been written bc it's so orientalist and while it is orientalist i resent that post for neglecting to mention all the other desert cultures it appropriates.
#herbert worked extensively in the american southwest#dune gets a lot of heat for grabbing stuff from the bedouin but the fremen are also apache as hell#but the current political context is so backward compatible with dune that everyone reads it as strictly middle eastern cultures#anyway i don't agree it shouldn't exist#but if you're gonna be annoyed about it there's more going on than orientalism!
