i'm probably only going to throw my two cents in once but fantasy game fandoms - Elder Scrolls AND Dragon Age - need to stop pretending like these games are divorced from the political landscapes they were made in. No one is saying you can't like so and so character or even have a fascination with an "evil" faction, but you're gonna get the hard side eye from a lot of people if you're looking at this group uncritically.

These games were not made in a bubble. You can like fantasy for fantasy's sake while still using those media literacy skills they teach you in middle school to critique the things you love. I promise it's not going to kill you.

Riz is aroace as we all know (do not fight me on this) but my headcanon that's sort of already implied is that once he figures it out he doesn't really tell any of his friends. He invents Baron to get away from it, and even in early high school he had ideas that he didn't feel the same way other people did. Once he discovers there's a word for it he just keeps it to himself. It's scary enough to come out, and especially with all his friends teasing him about how surely he has a crush on someone, that's a very suppressive feeling. Other thought is he had the words when he told his dad and really badly wanted to actually tell him but just couldn't, afraid if he put the words to it it would become too real for him to handle. He doesn't tell his friends, he doesn't tell his parents, he doesn't tell Jawbone, because he doesn't even want it for himself.

It's time to build a monument! Thankfully, we have a bunch of constructoids to do building and a bunch of lifter bots to carry bricks, logs, and raw steel around. This should be a breeze!

While Kwahu works on his pet project, Alistair's been busy at the fabrication bench. The Jones boys have some new bionics, and some very spiffy new prestige helmets to show for it! Unfortunately, Alistair's worn his reactor down with all his diligent work, so it's time for a replacement.

Unlike installing a bionic on a person, to replace an android's reactor, you have to first remove the old, spent one. You can't just queue "install reactor" and let the pawns figure it out.

I was very worried about ripping out what is, essentially, Alistair's heart, but Mechi is good at what he does and now Alistair's back to working at the fabrication bench to make prestige recon armour for our two knights.

The lack of an array headset does mean their bandwidth is lowered back down to only eight, but that's all they're using at the moment so we're all good.

We also installed bionic spines on both of our mechanitors, so now they can go about their important knightly business without worrying about back pain. It's the perfect transhumanist solution!

Kwahu is giving his bionic spine a rigorous field test by performing manual labour in the desert heat, and he seems to be faring well enough. We can declare this fourth bionic a roaring success!

I'm really not a villain enjoyer. I love anti-heroes and anti-villains. But I can't see fictional evil separate from real evil. As in not that enjoying dark fiction means you condone it, but that all fiction holds up some kind of mirror to the world as it is. Killing innocent people doesn't make you an iconic lesbian girlboss it just makes you part of the mundane and stultifying black rot of the universe.

"But characters struggling with honour and goodness and the egoism of being good are so boring." Cool well some of us actually struggle with that stuff on the daily because being a good person is complicated and harder than being an edgelord.

Sure you can use fiction to explore the darkness of human nature and learn empathy, but the world doesn't actually suffer from a deficit of empathy for powerful and privileged people who do heinous stuff. You could literally kill a thousand babies in broad daylight and they'll find a way to blame your childhood trauma for it as long as you're white, cisgender, abled and attractive, and you'll be their poor little meow meow by the end of the week. Don't act like you're advocating for Quasimodo when you're just making Elon Musk hot, smart and gay.

Fiddleford is a liar.

He contextualizes his lies as being for the greater good-but he still lies.

I think people sometimes overlook this trait. Outside of calling him a two timer on his wife (Emma-May, I would treat you so much better, run away with me), it’s all pretty much treated as a joke. "Silly little banjo playing Fiddleford who goes crazy by scrambling his brains like eggs in a skillet after a monster attack." It's a very convenient compartment to slide him into without digging much deeper.

However, I think it runs so much deeper than that. To lie so effortlessly and all the time, it takes practice. I think he has been lying probably for his entire life-so much so that he doesn't even consider it to be lying. The entire foundation on what he eventually builds his cult is "helping" the townsfolk by "protecting" them from the "terrible" truths that surround them in Gravity Falls.

Only a practiced liar would invent something like the memory gun. Because at the end of the day, when you are lying all the time, you are able to convince yourself of the lies for a little while-but not forever. (If you are not a narcissist, which of all the things Fiddleford is, he is not that.) You will wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat and remember what you did or what you are trying to cover up. The aspect of control over what at the time seemed controllable with a few false words now causing your heart to race, your breath to hitch, your head to ache. So, then you lie more, to cover up all the loose threads that would lead to what you've done. Eventually, you have dug a hole so deep, there is no end in sight.

The answer is simple-tell the truth, right? It would be the "right" thing to do...and it would shatter everyone's interpretation of you. Possibly dissolving any of the relationships you've built. Relinquishing control of the scenario you created. Because when you tell the truth, it turns into the "well, why would you do this?" conversation. Who wants to hear "because I wanted you to like me", "I didn't want to disappoint you", "I didn't want to make you angry" or "I wanted to be useful" in response? To see that look of utter disenchantment in their eyes as all your lies are revealed.

But....what if you could e r a s e the truth from your own memory? And not only your memory, but the memory of whomever you lied to. They would never have to know what you did. You would never have to face it. And you would never again be overcome with the feelings of inadequacies that triggered you to lie in the first place.

You wouldn't have to disappoint anyone, or yourself, ever again.

The Memory Gun started as a clever band aid to the trauma of the Gremloblin incident, yes. But it turned into something much more dangerous in the hands of an established and practiced liar.
