Went to see Wicked on tour with my mum and just finished reading Malice for my queer book club. And even though I had a fun time with both, I'm honestly tired of Fairytale Villain Retellings where the author does not want to actually engage with the villains and what makes them so iconic. Instead, the author takes the easy way out and makes the villain a misunderstood woobie, erasing what makes them interesting in the first place.

#again. i had a fun time #but also literature is littered with complex villain protagonists who are hard to love but you understand why they made the choices they di #fairytale retellings don't want villains; they want a protag who did nothing wrong #but still want that satisfying ending when the protag embraces the life of a villain #which feels cheap and unearned #also can we please stop making the main motivator 'the patriarch made me do it'#i will not have you diminish my gaslight gatekeep girlboss by giving the credit to some loser king
