I ACTUALLY HAVE. SOME CHOICE WORDS ABOUT THIS ONE. i want to applaud @ssoundwavee, @kemendin, @firebird-legacy, and @grandninjamasterren for listening to me connect some random ass dots into an actually coherent web!!

so. for this, i don't see anora in such an innocent light. initially - yeah, sure, she was the grieving fiancée who maybe only just then found vector's comm connection. she wanted to at least try, to send one last cry for help.

i don't think it was that simple. anora was up to some shit. the timing between her and my Least favorite jackass falner oeth made me really suspicious. so let's start with him.

when he shows up in the class stories the first time, his immediate jab to vector is overfamiliarity - vector makes it clear to us that he and falner were not friends, but instead colleagues who ran into each other a few times at public events. so for falner to just randomly throw out mention of anora (whom he purposefully misnames in order for vector to correct him) was wayyyy too weird. it got me thinking.

and then on so forth with his absolute bullshit. talking straight smack to the cipher about vector and expecting agreement, then his debacle of running a terrorist attack on the summit and killing daizanna of iesei.

as if it can't get any weirder, anora calls him.

the timing. after so many years and after clearly being so distressed, why was it after the summit? was it some worry that he'd be killed by falner? the empire?? why did she never call before (judging by her tone, she had never made an attempt for the long while vector's been a Joiner) it's fucking weird to me. she sends this long message, rambling and nervous about wanting him to be un-Joined ... after falner tries to fucking kill him? after falner blows up a fucking summit on the imperial-killik alliance and throws a speech that nearly pulls vector to tears??? nonnonoononono.

so yes, the situation is handled quietly, assuming that vector did it alone.

but remember how falner prompted vector to correct him on anora's name? i think he was testing vector's retained memory from pre-Joining. and i think he was passing that information along, specifically passing it to project protean.

after we get lokin blah blah blah there's that break-in of lokin's lab. lokin takes vector to go check out the hq of project protean. they interview the woman in charge. protean was known for dipping their hands into alien biology to splice with humans, and were looking for ways to personally create Joiners and then un-Join them later.

it is very suspicious that she suddenly calls on the tailwinds of falner's debacle, trying to pull at vector's human guilt and prove that he not only remembers her but test whether or not he retains his feelings from his Human life. testing, testing, testing the waters. (unforch for her, he does remember her and his feelings for her; he just fell out of love anyway)

all i'm saying is, we don't know what protean's uniform is. for all we know, anora could have just worn her old imperial diplomacy uniform for the call.

it was protean's doing that pulled vector to alderaan and subjected him to become a Joiner. protean wants to undo it. and who better to be at their forefront than a woman who was engaged to a man, possibly signed off to send that man on a diplomatic mission to some creatures straight up protean's alley, then wait years to try and figure out how much of him has changed and how much they can get back.

A word about Anora, Vector’s ex-girlfriend

Okay, so… i know its a given for most of us that Vector is better off as a Joiner. That this person he used to be doesn’t really exist anymore, and that attempting to “free” a Joiner after the fact is a DS decision. But i feel for Anora, here. Look at it from her perspective. The man she loved was kidnapped by giant bugs and turned into a bug-person, all against his will. I appreciate that she’s willing to fight for him.  (There’s a great piece of ff on AO3 where Anora becomes a “villain”, trying to kidnap Vector from his Cipher 9 girlfriend so she can “fix” him. Sadly, i can’t find it, as my Bookmarks on that site are a mess.)  But this part here is totally understandable. Who wouldn’t fight for the love of their lives?  Whatever message Vector sent her, I hope she found closure.
