Remembering that blog post (not on tumblr) that I read once about 'the structural flaws in Barnaby Rudge' and one of the listed 'flaws' was like 'so Emma Haredale is a year older than Barnaby, right. And Barnaby was born twenty-two years before the beginning of the story, right. So Emma is twenty-three. And we're meant to believe? that Edward Chester? is going to wait five years for her? so he plans to marry her when she's? twenty-eight?? he's sure he'll still be in love with her? when she's? twenty-eight? and the five years pass? and he does?? marry her? when she's twenty-eight??' and I was just like '...I'm not convinced this is a structural flaw...'
#i can't remember if it was the same post - probably - which was like#'and you're telling me dolly varden didn't get married in the meantime? dolly who's so desirable?'#and it's like#that's the point that's the point#it's not about who desires her it's about who she desires!#like i get that the set up / pay off structure of BR is not for everyone#but some of these so-called structual problems are or 'things that don't make sense'#have a lot more to do with the individual reader than with dickens...#barnaby rudge (book)#barnaby rudge; a tale of the riots of 'eighty#reading#scheduled
