Both of them are fractured realities and depend on some fairly stagnant magical race to balance out more volatile magical users. Both have a finite amount of magical resources. Both physical manifestations of magic are muted rainbows inspired by petrified wood.

Universe A was artificially separated thousands and hundreds of years ago, with incredibly dense, solid magical barriers that require a very strong magical spell to walk through without either cracking the “wall” or cracking your skull. It’s said by most that the walls were put into place primarily to protect humans and “good” creatures - humans were easy prey for more advanced magical races and creatures that need to hunt sentient life until they used their ultimate weapon adaptability and turned the tables on the already declining elder races. There’s also a rumor that some of said elder races raised the walls selfishly, to maintain control of large swathes of the universe and its individual realities via their large council and mostly symbolic ruler figure. 

At any rate, all of that gets reset, and universe B is created, with a few big differences. Ghosts and certain hybrids like Bound can use doors as access points, but most find gates to be reliable. Even magic is different, influenced by the massive walls that existed previously. 

And all the while Twilight exists, a font of magical plasm, outside of all realities but created when universe B was made. Oh, and it’s sentient. Yeah, that’s a thing that’s true even in tumblr.

The Old Laws and their Guardians, the ghosts, dominions of the death gods, the rainbow rivers that drive you mad if you fall in, time collapsing on itself...you can see why that would be considered world-ending. 

So the reason for the universe hopping is pretty straightforward. Gotta bring dragons back to stop this rapid decay and keep magic in balance. How do they know about the dragons? Dragon dreams. They don’t actually exist in universe B, but their mythology does. People connected to Twilight have been dreaming of dragons and the first universe, creating the myths we’re familiar with today. Some people get bigger pieces than others. D doesn’t get a whole lot, mostly dreams of golden dragons when he’s not plagued with nightmares. But he has books that say more, that speak of that myth I mentioned before, where dragons are punished for resetting the universe. 

I’m just plagued by self-doubt. Are these dreams of knowledge enough to justify Goose slipping through and creating a pathway large enough to pull a clutch of eggs back? Originally it was people, and I’ve nixed that idea hardcore recently, deciding that it would be more interesting to watch the council of Twilight attempt to raise dragons. Twilight exists outside universe B, but it was created with it. Do I leave it as that, or should I somehow tie it into universe A as well? How would I even do that? Magic is so different between the two, going from a primarily external manipulation to a primarily internal one. A pseudo-Twilight? That might work, as the dominions of death were already separated out from the other planes of reality in universe A...

Or I leave it and a cat ghost turned Twilight familiar slips through time, space, reality, and universe and saves the world. So long as the dragons survive and we don’t have a Robert Lutece situation on our hands.
