Apparently the speech and debate league I was deeply involved with in highschool is featured in Shiny Happy People and no one except my mother thought this was worth mentioning!!!
#my mom pointed out - rightfully so - that she wasn't allowed to pray at our 'mainstream' / 'liberal' (depending on your paradigm) church#but she was at the NCFCA tournaments she ran#and I was like .... yeah but really I did think they'd get you for that one. after some things men had said to me. I did think they'd make#you pay for that one#there was a lot of intellectual freedom as long as you learned how to spin / be strategic when you had deeply conservative judges#my partner and I went 1-5 at nationals one year because we thought 'end extraordinary rendition' was a no-fail case.#I remember when I set up a line of questioning in cross examination - where you're ALWAYS supposed to know the answers to your questions so#you can back your opponent into a corner / get admissions you need#- where I started confidently with 'so#can we both agree that torture is always morally wrong?'#and he was like 'no actually I think it's ok and we only have to be 60% confident we have the right person'#and it was all I could do to pick my jaw up off the floor#ANYWAY#adventures in the young political conservative army! they were formative! I wouldn't give my NCFCA career up for the world but#oooooof#tam.txt
