Chapter 7: "Puzzles, Papyrus, And Japes! Nyeh Heh!"
-------------------------------------------------------
The two humans continued their journey through the Underground, their footsteps crunching into the snowy pathway as they traveled a bit more cautiously. After their rather disturbing encounter with Red, they've been more careful during confrontation with other monsters, sometimes even choosing to flee from a quarrel should the need arise. Though none of the locals appeared to be as aggressive as the hooded monster from earlier, the older human still didn't want to take those chances. If there were any other monsters with that kind of malice towards humans, she had doubts if they'd even survive a confrontation like that, so until her fears were quelled, they were going to be walking on eggshells for the most part.
While they were on the move, Frisk stayed rather quiet during their trek, signing nothing to their big sister as they pondered over that unusual monster they met back at the sentry post. They just couldn't wrap their head around Red. How was she able to hear that ethereal voice that had been communicating with them? What kind of a monster was she..?
"The little human has quite the thinking look on their face." Magic inquired after noticing her sibling's silence and picking them up, resting them comfortably on her shoulders as she continued the trek for them, "Would you mind telling me what's on your mind, Butterbean?"
The brown-haired child scowled slightly, raising one hand to sign, "Why do you keep calling me that? You know I hate that nickname."
Magic let out an amused giggle, raising her hand so she could pat Frisk on the head, "I'm your big sister; it's basically my job to protect you, but also, it's in my job description that I am obligated to tease you when the occasion presents itself. Besides, you have a habit of slipping away whenever you shouldn't be running off, always looking for trouble. That's why you're my little Butterbean."
Frisk pouted and scrunched their face slightly when Magic reached one hand to pinch their cheek playfully, silently whining, "I am not!"
"Are too…" she smirked in response.
The two siblings stared at each other, unable to contain themselves as small bits of laughter escaped from them and shook their bodies. They loved sharing playful banter between each other like this; it was one of the few times they could disagree for fun, and it brought them closer together to make up for the time they had taken away from them. Perhaps that was the sole reason Frisk could tolerate being babied by Magic, as much as they disliked the weird nickname.
Just then, the older human sensed the familiar presence of two monsters up ahead. Her body came to an abrupt halt when she spotted the pair of wacky skeletons they encountered shortly after they had stepped out of the Ruins. Her mind swirled with concerning thoughts regarding their last encounter. She still wasn't sure if these two were a threat, never mind the fact that they could be just as aggressive as that hooded monster from before.
"SO, AS I WAS SAYING ABOUT UNDYNE..-!" the taller skeleton shouted. He seemed to speak much louder than his brother did, which, as amusing as it might've been at their first interaction, was splitting the older human's head open.
This guy needs to learn to control his volume... Just a word out of him makes my ears bleed, Magic thought, wincing slightly.
All of a sudden, as if his timing had been scripted, the loud skeleton turned his attention over to the two humans a few feet across from him and his brother, the older human completely frozen in place, wearing a tense expression on her face. Maybe he won't notice the two incredibly obvious humans right in front of him if they just didn't move whatsoever, right..?
"..."
No, no, that was too much wishful thinking. She could tell just by the grin that was steadily widening on the eccentric monster's face. He definitely saw them.
"OH MY GOD! SANS! IS THAT… A HUMAN!?" Papyrus shouted, excitement bubbling up from within his skeletal form.
The shorter skeleton who stood beside him gave the human siblings a nonchalant glance, eyeballing Magic for a considerable amount of seconds before he closed his eyes and gave his brother a shrug in response, "i dunno, bro. looks like a weirdly shaped rock if you ask me."
Magic stared at the skeleton in the blue hoodie, absolutely dumbfounded by his response.
He can't be serious, right? There's no way his brother is dumb enough to fall for that.
To her surprise (and Frisk's), Papyrus gave a disheartened "oh" in response and seemed to gaze at something on the ground behind the two humans. Magic followed his line of sight until she noticed that there was indeed a rock on the ground behind her that was, in fact, shaped rather peculiarly. It almost looked vaguely like someone carrying something up on their shoulders, much like she was with Frisk presently.
All this time, he was looking at a stupid rock!? Magic mentally facepalmed, How the hell did they… WHY did they scare us before!? This guy's thicker than the skulls they have for heads!
"wait bro, what's that in front of the rock?" Sans chimed in.
The older human flinched in response as Papyrus cocked his head in confusion, "NYEH?"
It was at this moment that the taller skeleton (finally) turned his attention to the two humans standing before him and his brother. A sharp gasp emitted from his vocal chords (assuming he had any) as he began to turn his gaze from his brother to the two humans in front of them repeatedly. Sans followed Papyrus in reverse, as every time his brother looked in his direction, he looked away at the humans. Eventually, the two monsters got so caught up in turning their heads back and forth that they both spun around in circles until they got dizzy and looked in the opposite direction from the human siblings.
Papyrus recovered first and spoke up almost immediately, "OH MY GOD!! SANS, ARE THOSE HUMANS..?!"
"well, they sure ain't rocks, bro…" Sans replied with a wink.
"YIPPEE!! AHEM..!" Papyrus turned back around and stood like a typical cartoon villain with one finger pointing at the human siblings, a pitiful attempt at an intimidating expression trying to mask his bubbly features, "HUMANS!! YOU SHALL NOT PASS THIS AREA, FOR I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, SHALL CAPTURE YOU BOTH!!"
Magic had the most deadpanned facial expression, giving the taller skeleton an unamused, "are you kidding me" sort of face.
Yeah, no. You're gonna have to try a little harder than that to scare me, pal, She thought.
Her expression seemed to confuse Papyrus a bit, "ERM… SANS? WHY IS THE BIGGER HUMAN NOT SHAKING AT MY CLEVERLY REHEARSED JAPES..?"
"hmm… i dunno, bro… maybe the big one's not a fan of japes." Sans answered, looking at the older human before turning to his brother with an innocent smile, "maybe i can tell 'em a few jokes instead."
Papyrus's eyes widened in horror at his brother's suggestion, "NO, PLEASE DON'T..-"
"knock knock."
Magic hesitated, "Uhh… Who's there..?"
"yup."
"Yup who..?"
"i know japes aren't nice to hear, but i got a few ways to pick ya-up." Sans answered with a wink.
The older human slapped a hand over her mouth as her cheeks swelled up, a desperate laugh threatening to escape as it shook her whole body. Her little sibling also seemed amused by the joke, much to the chagrin of the taller skeleton.
"SANS, THAT ONE WAS YOUR WORST JOKE YET!" Papyrus screamed.
"ah, sorry, bro… i won't let you down on my next one." Sans replied, his grin widening as the taller human almost lost it with the face Papyrus was making. If he got any angrier, she swore that they would be seeing steam flare from his nostrils.
"AHEM... AS I WAS SAYING!!" Papyrus interrupted, speaking in a very matter-of-factly tone, "PREPARE FOR THE MOST MIND-BOGGLING PUZZLES YOU HAVE EVER WITNESSED, HUMANS! DEVISED BY YOURS TRULY, THE GREAT PAPYRUS!! NYEH HEH HEH!"
The taller skeleton took a few steps towards the two humans, causing Magic to flinch away, a jolt of movement felt by Frisk. They bit their lip slightly, hoping that Magic's temperament would remain under control. Papyrus didn't seem like the type who'd want to hurt them.
The tall monster reached out and grabbed the older human's wrist gleefully, "COME ALONG WITH ME, HUMANS! AN ASSORTMENT OF WONDERFUL PUZZLES AWAITS!"
Despite his friendly, almost pitifully naive demeanor, the sudden tug on her wrist caused Magic's eyes to go wide as she yanked her arm out of the skeleton's grasp, her eyes going sharp and narrow in defense.
"DON'T TOUCH ME!!" she exclaimed, Papyrus's actions having triggered something within her.
Frisk was about to tug on the collar of her sweater gently to snap Magic out of it, when Sans suddenly appeared beside them and chided to his brother jokingly, "woah woah, bro, you can't just take a human by the wrist like that. at least buy her dinner first."
Magic's eyes glanced down at the shorter skeleton beside her, her expression completely aghast now. Despite her reaction, Papyrus and Frisk just seemed innocently confused, unsure of how to process Sans's words. The older human's eye somewhat twitched at the short skeleton. Even if it was to stop the situation from escalating, that joke was definitely not funny.
This cheeky bastard, she thought to herself.
"OH, I KNOW!!" Papyrus eagerly turned to Magic and Frisk with renewed excitement, "IF YOU HUMANS CAN SOLVE ALL THREE OF THE PUZZLES THE GREAT PAPYRUS PUT TOGETHER JUST FOR YOU, I WILL TREAT YOU TO SOME OF MY HOMEMADE SPAGHETTI!!"
Just three puzzles? Well, this shouldn't be too hard, so long as we don't have to travel very far to get from one to another, thought Magic, completely ignoring the delectable reward Papyrus offered.
"THE FIRST PUZZLE IS JUST UP AHEAD," he struck a very proud and heroic pose, "DEVISED BY YOURS TRULY, THIS PUZZLE IS SURE TO BLOW YOUR LITTLE HUMAN MINDS!!"
"Err… right…" Magic replied, a hint of sarcasm in her voice.
"COME ALONG THEN!!" Papyrus gestured with one hand as he ran off down the path energetically.
The older human grabbed Frisk gently and set them on the ground as she held their hand, following Papyrus together with his brother. Despite his laidback demeanor, Magic couldn't help but occasionally glance over at Sans, a wary glare hinted in her eyes. Though he may not be as energetic as his brother, there was something off-putting about him that she just couldn't figure out. It honestly sent a bit of a chill down her spine.
"hey, bucko? i know seeing monsters must be a learning experience for ya, but it's still not polite to stare at someone…" he suddenly spoke, having noticed Magic side-eyeing him.
"A-Ah, right…" she replied, sheepishly looking away in an attempt to mask her uneasiness.
Damn that bonehead… Why does he make me so paranoid..? He's just a goofy skeleton!
They followed the trail down through the forest until they came across an open clearing; the trees lining up the sides of the path until the frozen road cut off. The clearing stood upon surprisingly high ground, overlooking the massive groves of vegetation below. In the center of the clearing, blocking their way to the road ahead, sat a large patch of what looked like wet snow. The ground looked damper than in other spots, so it made the snow look blue. It didn't look like anything out of the ordinary, so where was the puzzle Papyrus spoke of?
"NOW, HUMANS, HERE IS WHERE YOUR FIRST PUZZLE SHALL TAKE PLACE!" he exclaimed with a proud tone of voice, "THIS PUZZLE IS DESIGNED TO TES..- NYEHGHGH!!"
All of a sudden, when Papyrus tried to walk through the damp snow, a small shock spread across his body as if he hit an electrical wire.
"What the..-?!" Magic stared at the taller skeleton in bewilderment.
Frisk ran to Papyrus immediately, looking up at him with concern, hoping that the shock wave didn't hurt him too badly.
"OH, DARN IT ALL!" the skeleton grumbled as he rubbed his head quietly, pulling something out from his scarf, "I KNEW I SHOULDN'T HAVE BROUGHT THIS THING WITH ME!"
The two humans got a closer look at what Papyrus was holding. It appeared to be a blue, spherical-shaped object of some sort. Magic could sense a powerful energy radiating off of it after its wielder had just been electrocuted, and the faint glow that diminished a second after it came into their line of sight was a dead giveaway that this artifact wasn't normal.
"uh bro, i know this may come off as a shock but i think the humans are the ones who need to hold that…" Sans chimed in, making his brother glare at him in utter disgust.
"I HATE THAT YOU MADE THAT A PUN, BUT I SUPPOSE I'LL LET IT SLIDE THIS ONCE!" the taller skeleton knelt beside Frisk with a gleeful smile, "HERE! HOLD THIS PLEASE, TINY HUMAN!"
Papyrus placed the orb on Frisk's head as he treaded across the invisible maze, dragging his brother along. Hilariously, Papyrus's boots left footprints in the damp snow patch, essentially giving them the answer to his own puzzle. When the two humans noticed, they both eyeballed Sans while Papyrus still had his back turned. The stout skeleton just nonchalantly shrugged with an innocent smile on his face.
So, this is normal for him, Magic thought.
The human siblings exchanged nervous glances as Frisk followed the path laid out by the footprints, their sister trailing closely behind them as she helped them keep their balance while they walked, cautious not to drop the magic sphere atop their head. As they carefully treaded through the invisible maze, Magic held one hand out quietly to sense any kind of magical forcefields, hoping neither of the boney brothers would notice. Sure enough, there were several electrical fences that couldn't be seen by the naked eye, lacing the pathway through the maze.
This monster tech is even more dangerous than the Ruins's puzzles, she thought, we better be careful not to touch any of these walls.
The older human began directing Frisk more hands-on, making them step into Papyrus's footprints precisely. The tiny human looked up at her as best as they could, a little putoff by her sudden extreme caution, but didn't complain when they noticed her slightly extended hand examining their surroundings. They decided to trust Magic's judgment and continue along the trail, finally reaching the other side, safe and unscathed.
"WOWIE! HUMANS ARE SO CLEVER! YOU MADE IT THROUGH THE WHOLE MAZE WITHOUT GETTING ZAPPED ONCE!" Papyrus congratulated with awe and wonder.
Magic and Frisk sighed as they fell to the ground in exhaustion, as though they just finished walking through a minefield. The tiny human held out the spherical object back to the taller skeleton, returning the artifact to its owner as the boisterous monster tucked it safely away in his scarf. How he kept things safely stored in there, they didn't know... nor did they want to bother asking.
"WELL, COME ALONG, HUMANS!" he called to them, "WE'VE STILL GOT MORE PUZZLES TO CLEAR!! NYEH HEH HEH HEH!!"
As Papyrus took off at breakneck speed with great joy, the two humans took a moment to recollect themselves. Sans watched as they tried to relinquish the adrenaline coursing through their veins, letting out a deep chuckle that sent a chill up Magic's spine as he turned to her with an unreadable expression.
"i gotta say, that came off as a real shocker, kiddo…" he told her, winking with his right eye, "you've got quite the eyes for avoiding danger… some sort of superhuman instincts there..?"
Magic flinched, her mind swirling with concerned thoughts.
W-Wait… d-does he know..?
She slowly met his gaze, his left eye fixated on her, but at the same time, it wasn't making direct eye contact with the older human... rather, it was like he was staring into her soul, and this awful feeling started crawling down her back. She swallowed hard and forced herself on her feet, using her height advantage over Sans to seem imposing so he wouldn't pry with more questions.
"Aren't you supposed to revere humans as enemies? You shouldn't underestimate us. We're much smarter than we look." she retorted, crossing her arms defensively.
Frisk watched as Sans laughed off their sister's threatening aura, as if he was completely unfazed by it.
"kid… lemme tell you a little somethin' about ol' sans the skeleton." he opened his other eye as his pupils seemingly disappeared into the black abyss of his eye sockets, "i stopped caring a long time ago… you don't scare me, so don't even try to act like you can… i have a feeling you know that it won't end well..."
Magic took a step back at the skeleton's response, but as she was about to protest, she blinked for one moment and Sans was suddenly gone. Startled by the use of teleportation, she looked around momentarily before sighing in relief and turning to her younger sibling, reaching her hand out and helping them up off the ground.
"A-Are you okay..?" they signed, worry evident within their expression.
"I don't know…" Magic pressed one hand over her rapid heartbeat, trying to calm her nerves, "that monster… Is it possible that he could see my soul..?"
Both humans were silent for a while, trying to process the warning Magic had just received. Where did that sudden malice even come from? He seemed so docile before. That Sans sure was a strange and unusual character.
"I'm starting to not like this place," she looked down at Frisk, "we better hurry and finish these stupid puzzles so we can find a way out of here. Let's go..."
