Wolf carries her day-to-day belongings in two leatherbeltbags that she always has with her even when changing into her spiderman costume. As a laysister Wolf lives in a convent, so she does not even has keys for a home with her. Considering when she goes out at night she just swings herself over the cloisterwall or out of windows, keys would be in general very useless.
Webshooters made of leather and ceramic When Hasna and Wolf tested her new abilities, they figured a spider needed webs. Accordingly they used an old chemical formula Hasna had experimented with and created the webfluid put into ceramic cartridges, cooked in water to create a vacuum. The webshooters are not made of metal or plastic - for obvious reasons- and usually Wolf has to repair and replace the different pieces once every two months, because the ceramic pieces break. Its one of the reasons why she still carries the danish ax with her, although not having the reach of the webstrings, it still helps her climb buildings when the webshooters are destroyed.
Ceramic Cartridges with webfluid Whats it says on the bin. Wolf carries them in one of her beltbags. One of the reasons why Wolf choosed to work as a laysister- beside the fact that she had no money or property to do anything else beside beeing a day-labourer which would still put her in danger of homelessness- is that the convent has rooms, materials and tools she can use for her work and research. After all the nuns are scholars on their own.
Small Leatherpuch with strains of Human Hair worn on a necklace Wolf had been carrying that small pouch around her neck since she had been fourteen years old. Around May of 1212 when Nikolaus Crusade reached the alp the crusade was suppose to cross to reach Genua. Obviously crossing the alps without any food supplies or let alone proper attire ended up in a catastrophe and many of the children either left or died. At this time Wolf had already been traveling with a certaine group of young teenagers with whom she had become friends and for which she had started months ago to steal from and rob people for food for them. The children, very much by now confronted with their own mortality ended up all making such a small pouch with strain of hair of each so in the case they would not survive crossing the alps, a part of them would travel along with their friends. It was also this group of children who brought Wolf into the italian cloister when Wolf fell ill with the pox. Wolf has no idea what had happned with her friends as she was at that time too sick or not able to register what was happening around herself. Years later (1228, Wolf is 30) when Wolf joins Friedrich II as a Medicus and the peace of Jaffa is set, she leaves the small pouch in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Piece of Walnut-Halva or Hardcheese wrapped in a cloth Wolf has the habit of binge- eating or hamstering food, when she notices that she has no food near. Which is a complete normal and suprisingly mild reaction considering she had been through months of starvation during the Peregrinatio Puerorum. Accordingly, as she had lived with those sympthomes already for over ten years, Wolf usually has a bar of walnut-Halva or hardcheese wrapped in a cloth in her beltbag which she eats of during the day, so she always has the security to have food with her and therefor feels safe.
Ceramicflask with lavenderoil As Wolf had lived years with a Medicus afflicted with leprosy, Wolf had picked up certaine habits. Whenever she goes out of a house or into a new house she washes her hands ( and her feet, because Hansa ain´t raised a barbarian) with a few drops of lavenderoil. Lavenderoil is obviously antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic and antiphlogistic and had been used since the antike for cleaning, specifically cleaning injuries.
Small bag with Firestriker, Amadou, Flintstone Normal fire-making tools.
Knife, a horn-spoon with a pointed end + ceramicmug with hande hanging on her belt There are no forks in Wolfs time. While she uses the knife for other things (cutting herbs, defending herself, woodcarving), its just in her times normal day-to-day habitus to have the own eating-utensils with her.
Linenepouch with Dried pennyroyal for tea + small Salvadora persica branches Salvadora persica is the toothbrush tree and the branches are used for mouthhygiene. Due to the change in Wolfs skull- after all she had grown six more eyes- she is prone to migraine attacks. Pennyroyal broiled into a tea is good remedy against migraines, so for Wolf it is a important medicine to always carry with her. On a complete sidenote- Pennyroyal is also a contraceptive in the manner while it does not stop concieving, it is a toxin that causes bleeding and contractions that work abortive. It is a obviously a higher dosis of the toxin than used for seasoning and even higher than what Wolf uses for her migraines. Just if anyone is wondering about Wolfs lovelife.
#headcanon#I know if I wanted to be really realistic I should have added linencloth#but she lives in a convent and when she is on her period sh just groans miserably and dramatically#and she is giving linencloth left and right#it ain´t that hard to get ehr hands on that#werspinna

TFP Megatronus x Orion Pax Experimental Concept Playlist: The Timescale of Cybertronian Lives + Music from 1890 - 2021
I know there are tons of playlists for these characters out there, but I’m trying to do something a little less conventional with this one; Please hear me out!
Two Playlists in One: Love Throughout The Ages
The first half of this playlist is almost all new music mixed in with some hits from the 60s, 70s, 80s, etc. to give variety, plus tracks from different genres so that hopefully everyone has a song they can enjoy in there somewhere.
For the second half of the playlist, I wanted to emphasise the idea of how long the war on Cybertron has been going on for, and just how old this conflict and the people involved actually are.
Cybertronian Timescale: Long Lives and The Perception of Time
We think of the Orion Pax / Megatronus stage of their relationship as being relatively brief, which it was in comparison to how long the war has been going on for as of TFP, but these are people who live for centuries. The scope of that is staggering.
Optimus Prime and Megatron have known each other personally (either positively or negatively) for longer than modern human civilisation has existed.
So to me, the best way to touch on that idea of time, musically, is to have the first half of the playlist be modern music, remixes, etc. and then the second half is well known and lesser known hits throughout early radio/TV (with many tracks on this playlist pre-dating those forms of media as well).
What’s on the Playlist, Then?
My grandmother was born in 1914, and her music collection spans nearly 100 years. It’s all good stuff.
I have included some of her favourites, which she always called her “sweetheart jingles”, on this soundtrack. I think many of them work surprisingly well for the Megatronus/Orion Pax relationship.
Many of these songs will probably be unknown by the vast majority of people who might want to listen to this playlist, which is also appealing to me. (I hope if this is your first time hearing some of these, that you enjoy a few of them!)
My parents were born in 1944, and I remember all of the classics they would play; Some of those tracks will be more recognisable as this was the era when radio and TV became far more common and accessible, but I picked the tracks that I think best apply to the pairing and the relationship between the two characters at that point in their lives.
The link to the playlist is below after some notes on Cybertronian language evolution!
Quick Thought: Cybertronian Language Over Time and Era Specific Speech Patterns
While thinking about my grandmother’s music collection as I assembled this playlist, I thought about some of the words and phrases she used commonly that are now totally non-existent in modern conversational English.
She had what would probably sound to most people like “1930s radio voice” or a more Trans-Atlantic Accent way of speaking; She grew up in the Northeast USA and so she had a very distinctive way of stressing the vowels in words. It’s not just the words themselves, or how they were pronounced, but the tone and pace of speech was also very different.
This got me thinking about Cybertronians, age, and speech:
Bots as old as Ratchet may have grown up with a totally different spoken language version of Cybertronian, and we already know that there are regional dialects, multiple written forms (glyphs), and era-specific types of Cybertronian language.
But the way they speak, as I mentioned above with the stressing of vowels and the tone and pace of speech, might still be different due to the different eras, even after language packs/programs are downloaded and updated periodically as needed. We already know Cybertronians have regional accents, so it stands that generational accents would also possibly exist as well.
Such a difference in speech patterns could possibly be used as a primary indicator of relative age on Cybertron, as physically they don’t age in the sense human beings do.
Back to the Playlist: Link + Track List + Notes on Audio Prior to 1930
The playlist is here on YouTube.
Scroll down to get to the second half (oldies section) if that’s what you’re here for!
Please note that the songs are not arranged in any particular order aside from the first half being newer music and the second half being far older music.
Also note, where original recordings are available on YouTube for some of the older songs, I have used those original recording versions.
However, keep in mind that there may be a couple seconds of “fuzz” at the top (start) of those older tracks, because they have been recorded from records or wax cylinders, which are formats of music that typically had a “pause” on the track to allow for needle and speed calibration when playing them manually. Modern records don’t do this in quite the same way and nobody uses wax cylinders anymore, but older records typically did. If this bothers you, skip ahead about two seconds or so, and it will resolve.
Tempo may seem slightly “fast” on two of the tracks due to difficulties with the medium and modern recording tech/methods, and one track has some persistent “fuzz” throughout due to the original recording being rare and therefore it is a “best copy available” type archival recording, but otherwise I’ve managed to find the clearest audio possible for the vast majority of the older songs!
(Fun music note, the “click track” in modern digital music was partially inspired by the clicking of the needle hitting the “countdown grooves” on old cylinders and records, which creates an audible mild clicking sound as the needle finds the groove and provides time for usually a half rotation or full rotation of the record before the track actually begins to allow for adjustment before the music starts! If the clicking is too fast, dial down the rotation speed, for example.
This itself was inspired by classical metronomes as well as the actual physical method of playing the music in this way, but it’s cool to see how this persists throughout musical history even now when we don’t need the click for digital production for quite the same reasons/applications. It’s all about timing, no matter the medium or era!)
Due to the method of how some player piano rolls were credited, often by roll company and not by individuals, the actual artist name is often not available for those tracks. Where possible and where known, I have included credits to the artists/musicians. I have done my best to research and find the artists in these recordings.
I have also included orchestrions and other “automated” music in addition to a player piano track as I think it’s interesting; These are often very old compositions being played on these machines, and as such are designed to reflect the earliest days of their relationship.
Songs range from the years 1890 to 2021, and I will add more as I manage to find YouTube videos with some of the older songs I’m still looking for.
By the way, if you need a love song for like an actual partner or crush that you have, I’m just going to say it now and point out that a lot of these classics are great to use in real life for cute purposes. My partner of ten years agrees, and my grandparents were married for over 60 years and sang many of these daily, so obviously something here works well. You’re welcome. ;)
Below the cut is a track list of the second half of the playlist, as it’s 7 AM and I’d like to emphasise the “classics” section here as it’s the central theme of the concept.
I will add to this list as more tracks are added:
You’re the Top - Cole Porter
What is this Thing Called Love - Leslie Hutchinson
I Get a Kick Outta You - Cole Porter
Puttin on the Ritz - Phil Spitalny Orchestra
What a Day - Carl Fenton

Love Potion no. 9 - The Clovers (Please note, this song mentions the word “g*psy” once in the beginning of the track. Skip this song if you would prefer not to hear it; I have done my best to only include songs that are friendly to the modern listener, but where needed I will make annotations such as this one to ensure nobody has to hear anything potentially offensive, as is unfortunately often the case with older music/lyrics.)
Come a Little Bit Closer - Jay and the Americans
Sh-Boom - The Crew Cuts
Oh Boy - Buddy Holly

Women Empowerment Research
What is women empowerment?
“Women's empowerment is the process of empowering women. It may be defined in several ways, including accepting women's viewpoints or making an effort to seek them, raising the status of women through education, awareness, literacy, and training” Empowering women is a part of a person’s well being to enable them to feel powerful’ in their own way. Being powerful can mean a lot of things and can come from philosophy, wisdom, talents, work ethic, and so much more that helps build a person’s character.
What is the history of Feminism and Women Empowerment in New Zealand?
https://theconversation.com/why-new-zealand-was-the-first-country-where-women-won-the-right-to-vote-103219
125 years ago today Aotearoa New Zealand became the first country in the world to grant all women the right to vote. The event was part of an ongoing international movement for women to exit from an inferior position in society and to enjoy equal rights with men. Many supported universal male suffrage and a less rigid class structure, enlightened race relations and humanitarianism that also extended to improving women’s lives. These liberal aspirations towards societal equality contributed to the 1893 women’s suffrage victory.
At the end of the 19th century, feminists in New Zealand had a long list of demands. It included equal pay, prevention of violence against women, economic independence for women, old age pensions and reform of marriage, divorce, health and education – and peace and justice for all.
During the 1880s, depression and its accompanying poverty, sexual licence and drunken disorder further enhanced women’s value as settling maternal figures.
New Zealand gained much strength from an international feminist movement. Women were riding a first feminist wave that, most often grounded in their biological difference as life givers and carers, cast them as moral citizens. With hindsight, the feminist movement can be implicated as an agent of colonisation, but it did support votes for Māori women. Meri Te Tai Mangakāhia presented a motion to the newly formed Māori parliament to allow women to vote and sit in it.
What does women empowerment mean to Gen Z?
https://www.thinkhousehq.com/insights/bodies-blood-brilliance-gen-z-feminism
“Everyone should be feminist, because it’s about equality. It’s not about telling women what they should or shouldn’t do, if someone wants to wear make up then they can, and if they don’t want to wear make up then they don’t have to. But there is an issue with many self-proclaimed feminist being gatekeepers. My friends and I think that TERFs, particularly, are a major issue. Feminism is also about helping men, helping them express their emotions and not have to be the breadwinners of a family and destroying toxic masculinity.” - Grace, 18
From actresses to survivors, artists to poets, and models to musicians, what Gen Z feminist icons all have in common is that they channel their creativity expertly to tell their stories, while adopting an unapologetic activist approach to opening conversation and fighting for justice, change and equality.
Representation in popular feminism today takes many forms. It’s about equal representation in society, with regard to industry, politics and policy making and equal representation in culture. Initiatives like Her Story aim to raise the profile of women’s stories, as a way to combat the global phenomenon of amnesia of women’s stories in history and more contemporary times.
Gen Z are talking more openly about vaginas, periods, miscarriages, body hair, the lot. This celebration is not only about the differences between women’s personal experiences, but also of the distinctive traits all women hold. The representation particular feminine traits and the unique brilliance of women comes to the fore in conversation here:
“While equality is important, to me it’s more about valuing the traits that a woman has. Creating more feminine, comfortable environments could bring about a positive change in different ways.”- Alwyn, 25.
Ultimately, what these trends tell us about feminism today, is that young women today are radical about owning who they are and being recognized accurately by wider society. They are unashamedly channeling their intelligence, digital currency, agency and creative skill, with purpose, to shout louder and more powerfully as a group than ever before.
https://musebycl.io/7-ways-empowering-gen-z-girls-change-world
These girls—especially those born from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s—have the ambition, confidence and desire to make a difference in the world. So much so that they've inspired me to take the leap from communicating to women to making a real cultural change.
Having other strong, supportive women to look up to will be a motivator to these girls when they enter the workforce. With initiatives like the #SeeHer movement, the advertising industry is already making an effort to accurately portray women in media, and hopefully strong women will continue to take the spotlight.
Individuality is important to Gen Z, so encouraging them to pursue their passions is vital. Recognizing that their lives are multifaceted and giving them the tools to explore and grow will help inspire them both at work and beyond.
https://psmag.com/ideas/why-generation-z-is-embracing-feminism
In many cultural contexts, Generation Z appears to be embracing feminism as a positive thing, demonstrating confidence in the power of activism, particularly via social media.
Malala Yousafzai, or 18-year-old Emma González, who's at the heart of the #NeverAgain movement protesting gun violence in the U.S.,
Online feminist campaigns such as #everydaysexism, #MeToo, and #TimesUp all draw energy from the new consciousness among this generation.
How is women empowerment done/displayed in a Gen Z way? - consider what inspired you to do a women empowerment campaign.
“HOT GIRL SUMMER”
https://time.com/5632924/hot-girl-summer-meme-explained/
If you’ve logged onto Twitter or swiped through your Instagram at any point this summer, you’ve definitely seen a post declaring it’s a hot girl summer. The now-ubiquitous phrase, a call to live your most confident and unapologetic life, was coined in the early months of the season by Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion, whose colorful monikers for herself also include “the H-Town Hottie” and “Hot Girl Meg.”
Contrary to what one might assume when hearing “hot girl,” the lifestyle is not focused on aspiring towards conventional beauty or influencer clout. Instead, it’s an embrace of confidence at its most essential: loving who you are and doing what you want, without caring what others think.
hot girl summer is for “women — and men — having a good-a– time, hyping up your friends, doing you and not giving a damn what anybody has to say about it.”
(the hashtag #hotgirlsummer has been used over 170k times on Instagram, while the hot girl summer has been used on Twitter a whopping 2 million times over the past month) distills an affinity, exhibited by many women in 2019, towards body positivity and self-affirmation. Hot girl summer, a hip-hop feminist manifesto, taps into these movements from many angles, championing confidence, sensuality and fun.
Tacho explained why she embraced hot girl summer to TIME thusly: “It’s a positive movement! Having a Hot Girl Summer is all about being the best version of yourself and doing what you want to do. It’s all about having fun.”
And as with most things on the Internet, it’s attracted its fair share of controversy. Although Megan clearly stated that hot girl summer is gender neutral, some trolls on the Internet were determined to make hot girl summer a battle of the sexes, pitting it against a “hot boy summer” or a “city boy summer,” the latter being a play on the rap group the City Girls (the duo is known for their fierce, take-no-prisoners approach to love and sex in their music).
“I CAN’T TALK RIGHT NOW, I’M DOING HOT GIRL SH*T”
https://www.buzzfeed.com/andriamoore/doing-hot-girl-sht-tiktok-trend
Megan Thee Stallion gifted us the slogan of a lifetime when she broke onto the music scene and coined the phrase, "real hot girl sh*t."
If you don't know, the phrase has basically become a battle cry for female empowerment.
But the latest TikTok trend is putting a hilarious twist on that sense of empowerment. People are uploading videos of themselves doing... well, things that aren't typically in the realm of "hot girl sh*t"— like shaving your stomach.
If anything, this trend has only further increased the purpose of the hot girl anthem: feeling proud and confident with who you are already.
https://www.vice.com/en/article/z3v873/hot-girl-shit-meme-megan-thee-stallion-tiktok
Over the past couple of months, “hot girl shit” has swept through social media like a heat wave. These videos feature people, mostly those who identify as women, embracing their most everyday, banal moments—shaving their upper lips, putting on face packs, savouring the last few puffs of a joint, involved in an intense gaming sesh or simply taking their 23rd nap in the day—under the guise of doing something that could be considered hot, a term that generally refers to the sexual attractiveness of a person.
But what they may lack in logical reasoning, they make up for in deeper meaning: letting the world know that being “hot” isn’t just equated to someone’s physical appearance anymore. That being hot is a mentality, a mindset that involves extra dollops of extreme self-confidence, and something to be found inherently within us rather than something you’re blessed at birth with or what your cosmetic surgeon helped you achieve.
TikToking and Reels-ing our way to chipping away centuries of female objectification and sexism, prompted by the male-dominated industry ideal of how women should look and behave to “qualify” as hot.
“This trend proves that ‘hot girl shit’ lies on a spectrum, and is ultimately just about feeling confident,” Uchenna, the first known creator of this meme format, who goes by her screen moniker @makeupbychelseax, told VICE. The young creator sees the trend as a way to reclaim the identity of what a “hot” girl should be, after centuries of the concept hanging on the hinges of the male gaze.
Mulvey theorises that essentially the male gaze hypersexualises women, reducing them to objects of attraction for the male lead. The male gaze, which has been dominant throughout the history of pop culture, ultimately drives the perception of what the ideal woman should look like.
Over decades of women being seen through a stereotypical lens in pop culture and art, mostly crafted by heterosexual men, the male gaze has also conditioned many young women who consume this content to strive to achieve the same standards of the perfect on-screen female lead.
“The stereotypical idea of the ‘hot girl’ would be a tall, skinny, fair girl with big boobs,” Shreemi Verma, a film critic and marketing professional told VICE.
“hot” girl is a socially conditioned prototype, a fantasy fuelled by the lack of female filmmakers and critics in the mainstream industry. so many of us connected with this meme trend is because of how real it was.
Verma stressed that by showing the raw reality behind what can be considered hot, this trend became a relatable way for women to challenge the on-screen stereotype. the idea of “hot” continues to evolve into a more empathetic, all-encompassing ideal. Supriya Banerjee, a 24-year-old social researcher based in the Netherlands, told VICE. It normalizes simple things like art, dance or cooking meals for children as things a hot girl does.” For Banerjee, the trend has a simple underlying message: that everything women do can be considered hot girl shit.
What does Gen Z women empowerment suggest?
Feminism and female empowerment within Generation Z shares the idea of positive cultural change in female stereotypes through technology and social media which can be easily flowed into the mainstream of society and news. Gen Z is all about individuality, authenticity, and diversity and is always up to challenge stereotypes and break the norms unapologetically in order to be truly happy because Gen Z is passionate about wellbeing and mental health. Gen Z sets out trends on social media to spread messages and ideas that influence other social media users. Overall, Gen Z’s way of breaking female stereotypes is through trends, social media, music, and many more types of media just to get the word out.

What Happens if Parents Don't Give Their Kid a Name?
It turns out there are a shocking number of rules and regulations concerning what parents can name their children, when the naming has to happen by, and even a section of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child that specifically states that all people, from birth, have an inalienable right to have a name. This all brings us around to the topic of today- what happens if parents flout that right and don't give their baby a name? And, further, what are some of the rules surrounding what names can be chosen in the first place?
To begin with, let's start with arguably the easiest to answer both of these questions- the United Kingdom. In this case, you have 42 days to name your baby, during which you can expect to occasionally be pestered by officials if you're taking your sweet time getting around to it. If you pass that time period, you will receive a £200 fine and, if you still refuse to give a name, a government official will name the child for you.
That said, in some cases UK officials may allow you to extend the period a bit beyond the 42 days, so long as you convince them a resolution seems reasonably close at hand, you pay the fine, and keep them notified of the progress. Further, UK parents have up to a year after birth to submit a correction to a name should there be an error in official documentation or if the parents just change their minds and want to re-name the child.
Beyond giving quite a lot of time for parents to pick a name, unlike a lot of countries on this side of the pond, the UK is also pretty lax about what names you can pick, generally having few guidelines other than it cannot contain obscenities, numbers, be impossible to pronounce, and must not contain a title that could be misleading. Should you choose to flout these rules and try to name your child SirOkkkxkxkxkuppppp Sh*tface Whistler, you can expect the Registering Officer to go ahead and reject all but the "Whistler" part of that.
In contrast, in countries like Norway and Denmark, you are required to pick from an approved list of names. In most countries that have such rules, including these two, you can attempt to deviate from the list if you go through the proper paperwork and approval process first. Failure to get prior approval for an unlisted name will usually result in some sort of fine and either the state rejecting the name submission outright or if it slips through, the child's name may be forcibly changed later. For example, in one case in 1995 a Norwegian woman, Kristi Larsen, attempted to name her 14th child "Gesher," which is Hebrew for "bridge." Kristi claims the name came to her in a dream. The state, however, didn't care about her nocturnal hallucinations, and fined her the equivalent of $420 (about $700 today). Unfortunately for her, when she refused to pay the fine, she was arrested and put in jail. She stated of this, "If we accept the fine, it's like we're admitting some kind of guilt." She further brazenly stated no matter what the courts say, "We're still calling Gesher, Gesher."
While not as strict as Norway, many other nations in Europe do similar things, with varying guidelines generally centered around trying to ensure the child is not given an outlandish or offensive name.
For example, in the early 2000s, a couple living in Germany attempted to name their child Osama Bin Laden, a man they seemingly admired a great deal. This broke two naming rules in Germany. First, this name was "likely to lead to humiliation" for the child. Second, it was against the rules in the couple's home country of Turkey as well, which also made it against the German rules.
Germany is also one of a surprising number of nations that require that the child's name indicate what gender they are. If it's unclear because it's a foreign name, generally the German officials will simply reach out to officials from other countries where the name is common, if any, for their input before approving or denying a name.
Another example of this is France where, while they have relaxed their rules significantly about the naming of children in recent years, you still cannot pick a name for a child which might be construed as the child being a different sex than the name is usually associated with, much to the chagrin of one French woman who tried to name her daughter "Liam".
Going back to what happens if parents don't name their child, Germany is also one of many, many countries where if you fail to choose a child's name after the allotted time period (in this case 4 weeks), an official at the Standesamt will simply choose for you.
In cases where the state picks, officials seemingly almost always just select one of the more popular names in a given country for a given sex of child- except in the United States, which, as ever, does things slightly differently.
To begin with, there is basically no standardization from state to state within the U.S. with regards to naming children, nor standard time period where this needs to occur. The few rules that do exist tend to be more practical in nature, for example often not allowing special characters simply because the state's database data type for the name field doesn't support them. There are also usually basic rules about how the last name should be chosen to facilitate dispute resolution should there be contention. For example, in Louisiana if the mother was unmarried 300 days before the birth (so slightly before conception in the vast majority of cases), the mother's maiden name will get precedence in a dispute, whereas if she was married at the time, the father's, unless both parents agree to something different or there is otherwise no dispute.
That said, as database systems are updated rules sometimes change. For example, after a software update, Illinois began allowing numbers to be put in names, or even the name itself to be a number, like "7", which is what at least one couple we found chose to use as the middle name for their son, no doubt after watching Seinfeld.
There are also states, such as Alabama, Kentucky, Washington state, and Montana, that don't even require the last name to match the parent's at all, able to be pretty much anything you want within the bounds of the few other aforementioned rules about character restrictions.
That said, a few states do include laws concerning use of offensive terms, such as California who not only extend this to the naming of babies, but also what you can change your own name to. For instance, in 1992 California courts barred a man from being able to change his own name to "Misteri N*gger"
Moving on to what happens if the baby is not named after whatever period (usually in the ballpark of a week to a few weeks, with some buffer period after for changes without additional fees or hassle), it turns out there is no official standard here either.
To start with, Michigan, Connecticut, and Nevada do not require a person to have a legal name at all (not even a last name) for their birth certificates to be processed. As far as we can find this has never caused a significant issue anywhere, other than in one court case where a Connecticut judge needing to clarify the rules here was completely flummoxed when he tried to look into the matter, stating, "The court has inquired of dozens of Connecticut lawyers and judges, and no one has supplied even a portion of an answer to the question: How is a person's legal name established?"
In general what seems to happen in these cases is that if the parents forgo naming their child within the allotted time before a birth certificate must be processed, no name is given and the parents are simply allowed to submit one later when they ultimately decide on one. That said, because of certain federal requirements such as when trying to get a Social Security card, Passport, etc., as well as when trying to register a child for school and things of this nature, for practical reasons a name will inevitably be officially submitted at some point, which is perhaps why it's not ever really an issue despite lack of official state rules.
Other states, like Ohio, simply require that at minimum a surname be given for the birth certificate to be processed and then, in Ohio's case, they give you a year to decide on the full name.
So what about the more general case in the United States where a name is required to process a birth certificate and the parents do not give one? Well, the baby will be given a name. However, unlike in many other nations where this name would be something common within the nation, in the U.S. the name given will almost always be something like "Baby Boy", "Male", "Baby Girl", "Female" or just "Baby" with an appropriate surname tacked on. In the case of twins, something like "Baby GirlA" and "Baby GirlB" or "Baby One" and "Baby Two" are also common. Exceptions do exist though for abandoned babies and the like, where occasionally officials will select a proper name for the child if a relative of the child can't be found willing to take them in and name them.
As to the more common case of indecisive parents, these "Baby Boy" style names are a result of what hospital staff use as a placeholder in the hospital database until the parents give the baby a name. If the parents then fail to ever give an official moniker, the placeholder name inevitably gets used in the birth certificate processing, which is also typically handled by hospital staff.
It should also be noted here that studies have shown this practice by hospitals of basically giving every child the same first name if the parents haven't provided one absolutely increases the odds of issues for the baby while in the hospital, usually in the form of mix ups with treatment and medication and the like, for example if there are two "Baby Boy Smiths" in the NICU at the same time. To help resolve this, admittedly rare, issue, some hospitals have switched to further tacking on the mother's name, so "JennifersBoy Smith" instead of "Baby Boy Smith". Of course, in more recent times this is even less likely to occur anyway thanks to commonly used wristbands with ID chips or barcodes to reduce the risk of screw ups anywhere, though they still happen.
To further simplify things on their end, some hospital workers will also attempt to pressure the parents into giving the child a name as quickly as possible, and even in some accounts we read actually tell the parents that it's required by law to give a name before the baby is allowed to be taken home. However, despite what any hospital official may tell you, in the United States, this is not required. Nor is it required that in home births the midwife or you give the baby a name right away, simply that you do report the birth to the appropriate state department.
Now, while you might think surely no parent would allow their child to be named something like "Baby Boy", it does happen occasionally. Not always about not caring or inability to agree on a name, however, some parents feel the child themselves should pick their own name, and because it's a fairly straightforward and relatively inexpensive process in the U.S. to change the name later, using the hospital's place holder name for official documents at first isn't usually a big deal.
Perhaps the most famous example of this is Olympic skier Picabo Street, whose name was originally Baby Girl. Picabo explains,
At first, my parents didn’t have a name for me. My name on my birth certificate... reads Baby Girl. And that’s what they called me until I was almost 4. When they planned our first train trip to Mexico for vacation, we needed passports. My father liked the sound of Picabo, an old Native American settlement an hour south. I also liked playing peekaboo with him. My mother and father agreed on Picabo.
(If you're wondering, supposedly Picabo meant "silver water".)
In any event, many countries likewise make it no big hurdle to change a child's name, usually just a bit of paperwork and a fee, so long as both parents agree or if one parent isn't in the picture this can be conclusively demonstrated first. That said, delaying doing so in the U.S. does potentially open things up to a judge's discretion on what might be acceptable, whereas naming from birth in the U.S. usually has few if any restrictions other than on character set.
Finally, we should probably mention that in 46 of the 50 states in the U.S., should your name be something silly like "Talula Does the Hula from Hawaii" (more on this one in a bit in the Bonus Facts), but everyone calls you "K" and you yourself accept that as your name, that is now legally your name if you want it to be. However, for certain official documents at the federal level, like passports, you still may need to get the courts to give you official documentation of the change. But outside of this, you are allowed to use your chosen name as your official, legal name even if it doesn't match what's on your birth certificate and you never went through any official process to get it changed. We're guessing little Adolf Hitler (another we'll get into in the Bonus Fact in a bit) is pretty thankful for this one, regardless of what his parent's political views are.

Bonus Fact:
In countries with few regulations on what a parent can name their children, like the U.S. and the U.K., relative ease of changing a name is probably a good thing. For example, consider the case of Heath Campbell who has a whopping nine children by five different women. The New Jersey man has named every one of his kid's with a Nazi theme. For example, little Adolf Hitler Campbell, JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell, and Eva Braun Campbell. Apparently for reasons completely unrelated to the names, the state has taken custody of every single one of Heath's kids away from him. For example, in the case of Eva Braun Campbell this occurred when the couple attempted to check out of the hospital. Said his then fiance Bethanie Zito when the Franklin County Children and Youth Service informed her they were taking the baby, "I started screaming. I got hysterical. I had just been checked out. I was breast-feeding my daughter for two days straight. I changed her. I had clothes on her."
Heath himself stated of this, "I'm not allowed to have children because I’m a Nazi... Jewish people came... and took my kids all over a name. I didn’t murder anybody. I didn’t hurt anybody. What crime did I do? Yes, I’m guilty of loving my children.... Society thinks the Germans and the Nazis are bad people when really we're not. We're family oriented..."
The state, on the other hand, says neither the names nor his political leanings have anything to do with their decision to take the children, but rather the lengthy history of violence and abuse in the household, which was first discovered when Heath attempted to have a birthday cake made with "Happy Birthday Adolf Hitler" made when his son was turning 6. Officials then investigated the household with the result being a couple of his former wives stating that Heath both frequently beat them and variously threatened to murder them, among other red flags authorities found.
Perhaps not doing himself any favors, in one custody dispute case in which he was attempting to get custody of his 18 month old son Heinrich Hons Campbell who was taken shortly after being born in 2011, while Heath did technically dress up for the hearing, it wasn't in a way that exactly endeared him to the authorities. Rather than wearing something like a suit and a tie, he showed up dressed in full Nazi military dress uniform, as well as sporting a Hitler-inspired moustache. His prominent tattoo that says "Kill Judes" probably didn't help either. (And yes, for those German speakers out there, it did indeed say "Judes" instead of "Juden".)
Moving on to something much more silly, but nonetheless still not appreciated by the child in question, in New Zealand parents named their daughter "Talula Does the Hula from Hawaii". When the girl was 9, the matter was brought to the attentions of the courts during a custody dispute. Up to this point, the girl had simply told everyone at school her name was "K" as she was extremely embarrassed by her name. The judge in the case, Rob Murfitt, ordered the state to temporarily take custody of the child, during which time the name was changed to something not publicly disclosed. Said Judge Murfitt,
The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment that this child's parents have shown in choosing this name. It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily...

Interview // Field Music
I interviewed Peter Brewis of Field Music for 7digital.
It feels like you’ve barely taken a break between your last album, Commontime, and Open Here. Tell us about the project you worked on for the Imperial War Museum.
Yeah, it was the soundtrack for 14-18 NOW, for a film called ‘Asunder’, about the North East in the First World War. The people who were organising it wanted it to make it a big collaborative thing, and the artistic director was Bob Stanley from Saint Etienne, and he’s a writer and broadcaster as well. So he wanted to set up a collaborative project where we made this film and the music at the same time, and we collaborated on the music with a band called Warm Digits and the Northern Symphonia.
Did you take anything away from the project that’s inspired Field Music?
Yeah, probably just in making the new Field Music record a little more expansive, in terms of the sonic palette that we used. We got the strings more involved, we got woodwind and horns. So, yeah, we were more confident about making it slightly more orchestral in places.
We spoke to David a couple of years ago, and he cited a motivating factor for Commontime being that you wanted to do some songs with choruses that your kids might like. Do your children approve of the new record?
(Laughs) I don’t know. I haven’t even shown it to my son yet. He’s four and a half. He’s going through his second David Bowie phase so he’s not really listening to anything else.
Wow, that’s pretty young to be going through your second Bowie phase.
Well, yeah. It’s starting to get on my nerves a little bit now, actually. But that’s what he’s into. So whenever I see him that’s what we listen to, in the van. In terms of David’s kids, David’s used his son’s keyboard to record most of the song ‘Count It Up’ which is probably why musically it sounds a bit silly really. And also Dave’s son, Will, doesn’t really like anyone else using his keyboard, so we had to record it without him knowing about it. (Laughs) But he’s three so he’s allowed to be quite protective over his toys.
You mentioned you’re exploring a more expansive sound in your arrangements. What were your motivations for that change?
I think Dave and I have always liked orchestral pop music, and what would be loosely termed “classical music.” We’d never really gone the whole hog with it – and I still don’t know whether we have really yet – but I think working on the film score ‘Asunder’ with an orchestra helped. Having certain people in the orchestra saying, “You know what, you’ve done a good job here,” I thought to myself, “Well ok, maybe I’m not the charlatan that I thought I was. Maybe I can try to push this a little bit further.”
The other aim was to make it concise but to push it in a number of different directions at the same time. One was the orchestral direction, the other was a song like ‘Count It Up’, which I think is the first song we’ve ever done where there aren’t any guitars on it whatsoever. So it was just trying to push in a few different directions at once really and see how varied we could make the record, but still make it coherent.
Can you tell us about some of the players you got involved?
Yeah, well that was the other thing: we wanted to try to get more people involved because we knew it would be the last time we got everyone in our current studio. And we’ve met loads of great musicians over the years. There’s Liz, who joined the live band for Commontime, and we enjoyed singing with her so much that she sings on three or four songs. There’s the flautist Sarah Hayes, who played with us on ‘Asunder’, and the saxophone player Peter, who also plays with Mary Epworth. He did the solo on ‘The Noisy Days Are Over’ but we realised we should have done a bit more with him. So, yeah, we tried to make it a communal atmosphere and fun. And I think the whole spirit of the album is to try to have fun in dark times; trying to be defiant about all the sh*t that’s going on.
‘Count It Up’ feels like the most overtly political songs you’ve ever written. It’s a list of privileges, and tackles the idea of ascribing your financial situation to your talents and not to the wider economy or the government, right?
Yeah. Dave wrote it so I’m not sure. I don’t know how much Dave actually believes in the idea of talent. But this is how I see it: obviously your financial predicament is a big issue when it comes to how you’re able to nurture your children for instance. You know, I definitely can’t send my kid to private school. I struggle to buy him the odd pair of shoes sometimes, but my parents struggled a bit. But then we don’t struggle the same as someone on the border between Turkey and Syria. I think the continuum of privilege is a really interesting one. I don’t think Dave is excluding himself from the anger, if you know what I mean. I think he is looking at himself in the mirror and thinking, “Do you know what mate? You need to count it up.” (Laughs) Or maybe he’s talking to me. God, I don’t know. (Laughs)
Are we right in thinking that Brexit inspired some of the events on this album?
Yeah, for David definitely. I don’t think he would have written ‘Count It Up’ were it not for Brexit, because one of the reasons that we’re going to leave the European Union is because people think that they should be doing better, and that we live in a shit country now because of the EU. We don’t live in a sh*t country. This is not shit. Of course, it could be better – it could be better – but we shouldn’t assume that we live in a terrible place. There are many, many more places that are much, much worse. So really I think it’s a privilege to live in this country, and it’s a privilege to be in the EU. That’s what I think.
So anyway to answer your question, yes: leaving the EU was a part of making the album. I think it had to be informed by it but it’s about how do you talk about these things without being really cheesy about it? Or how do you talk about these things but still have a sense of humour about it?
What other ideas or themes do you see running through this collection?
I think family and parenthood are still big things. Songs like ‘Find A Way To Keep Me’ and ‘Cameraman’ are about wider global events, but I couldn’t have written them at all without thinking of them through the eyes of my son. You know, when you see kids being thrown onto a train in Syria by their parents to get out of a war zone, just to get them to safety? And they’re never going to see them again... That’s just a pretty incredible situation and you think, “God, could I do that to my four-year-old son?” Could I do it? I don’t know.
Can you tell us more about the title track, and why it resonated as a title for the whole collection?
Well, the title was probably a joke. You know in a Travelodge where you see the beer bottle opener with ‘Open Here’? I remember just thinking that’s so funny that every Travelodge room has a bottle opener because they know their clientele very well. So I think I’d written that down and then I couldn’t really think of anything to do with [the phrase] for years until I was thinking about old friends.
The song’s about old friends who were in a particular position of local prominence and then things change and grow. Maybe they’ve made some judgements on things that haven’t worked out... It’s an amalgamation of characters and quite a sad song in a way. But again, I think I wanted to do something with just strings. In the intervening period between the two albums I’d done a Kate Bush celebration which was organised by Emma Pollock – formerly of The Delgados – and hearing a string quartet on ‘Cloudbusting’ I thought, “Oh my god, I need to do something like that.”
And you’re embarking on a short tour with an orchestra next?
Yeah. We were thinking about it like Van Morrison’s Caledonian Soul Orchestra that he had, which has a string quartet and a horn section and wind instruments, like a big band. And that’s how we’re approaching it. So it’s gonna be 13 or 14-piece band.
Are you looking forward to it?
Yeahhh.... Kind of. We had our first rehearsal last night and there’s some work to do, but at least we know what the work is that we need to do. But by the end we were like, “This is definitely gonna work.” But it is quite an undertaking. We’re playing three dates at the Northern Stage [Newcastle] for our album launch, and then we’re doing the Barbican and then I think we’ll do a couple of festivals with that line-up, I think. And then afterwards I just want to be in a three-piece rock band, or blues band or something. (Laughs) Really simple...
What’s next outside of Field Music?
So I’m working on an album with Sarah, who’s playing flute with us, and she’s in a band called Admiral Fallow, from Glasgow. They’re an orchestral indie band, so we’re doing some kind of folk-rock thing but I think there would probably be Field Music elements in it as well as Admiral Fallow elements. I’d like to think it was in the lineage of the Fairport Convention, but we’ll have to see about that. So yeah, that’s it for now. I think we’re going to be busy with Field Music for quite a while.
