Uhhh, we're in the prologue rn, so I guess I'll share a Luana fun fact!
Despite wanting to live among mortals and not use magic, she really does enjoy the arcane side of the world-it's part of how she became a changeling to begin with!
As a child, her fascination with the friendly spirits in the forests and ocean nearby allowed her to befriend them-and so, when her home life became unbearable, one thing led to another, and off to the fae realm she went.
She's fascinated by the micro societies that hide behind the veil or beneath our feet, the divine precursors to the many lands in Eostella, interpreting magic to carry out your will, how personality impacts your interpretation of magic etc etc.
It's just that, for her, magic is a little bit of an arcane disability in the human realm. As someone who isn't human anymore, she has an access amount she generates from within, which of course outclasses the magic the average human has, mage and sublunary (a non-magic user) alike.
This should be a good thing, as magedom is an institution in the world of Eostella, and a powerful mage like her would surely be welcome into mage society...however, for Luana, her magic is directly tied to her non-humaness-if she uses magic, either from within or the environment, poof! A part of her body, or even her whole body, will shift into her weird rabbit-cat form-and generally speaking, magedom is not a fan of the neighbors living among humans, on top of them trying to keep the neighbors a secret from everyday folk.
So basically, Luana has to hide her other form from everybody in order to live among humans-and to do that, she can't lean into her magic or magic society, which means giving up this interest in her eyes. This also means that because mages are usually hostile to the idea of non-humans living with humans, and the average person knows nothing about neighbors and suppressing magic naturally, without a lot of help, she has to find a way to tame the wild magic within her to make her human (original) form her "default" look...and what's funny is, even as a "human" she has elfin ears, so even her human form has quirks she has to hide!
#asks#oc tag: luana#as she is now BOTH forms are equally ''her'' if that makes sense#changelings don't have a ''real'' form-their human and non-human form isn't glamour. their bodies shift into both without trouble#bones changing and all! this means that Luana can switch on the fly#but shapeshifting is tied directly to your emotions+is a result of having insane magic power#your conscious AND subconscious fuels your current shape for a changeling-and really all neighbor-type folk#if you're anxious about being found out and your other form is on your mind. it's always laying in wait to show itself as a result#and suppressing magic from within can make a changeling sick/feel terrible-it's suppressing a natural part of yourself after all#how Luana tackles the issue of mortal life and magic life and being non-human is a huge part of Tovera's story :]#it might sound crazy to be non-human and believe you can live a magicless life-but a woman can dream!#PLUS Luana is a huge fan of nature. in her eyes that can replace fairy societies in the forest and youkai banquets in the mountains#though she'd definitely miss her spirit/folk friends once she finally settles into mortal life
