Some reasons to vote for Roman!: God he is SUCH a loser (affectionate) he and Neo got a book dedicated to them and you really get to see a lot of his personality shine! The most basic descriptor I can give of him is: Goofy, but also very calculating and sadistic. He gets flustered so easily whenever shown any ounce of affection, he has some pretty clear abandonment issues from him mom literally DROPPING HIM OFF to an orphanage when he was already old enough to have clear memories of her.

He was stuck living on the streets for years until he robbed the wrong guy and ended up being forced into an underground crime syndicate where he had to babysit the boss' daughters, who bullied him, a grown man, by pulling his hair and stealing his hat lol. He learned the hard way that the world sucks and you need to suck more in order to survive.

When he starts becoming friends with Neo hes like "hmm I mean. She can clearly read me pretty well already so" *proceeds to traumadump his entire life story to this 18 year old girl he just met* and when she gave him a hat he was like.. erm.. how tf do I accept gifts lmao.. and accepted it in the most awkward way but at least he tried!!

Quote from that scene: "No one had ever given him a gift before, either. What were you supposed to say when someone did something nice for you? 'Well. Thanks.'" Just a well. Thanks. Nothing else lol

Roman also just has a huge appetite for infamy, so when saw a chance to get it he took it, and very quickly became a pretty well known criminal who was wanted dead in a lot of places, so he turned himself in to some cops, poisoned them with doughnuts, and proceeded to threaten the biggest crime boss in Vale at the time.

His first big gig with Neo was to steal all of the expensive coffee from mistral with her, which ended up failing because he doesnt know how to use his phone and got caught lmaooo (they both hate coffee)

His love language is giving gifts and when he decided to start really helping neo he bought her a really fucking expensive umbrella with all of his money, he had no idea she was rich lol. But he was so silly and goofy towards her about it and he clearly cares so much about her (claims to hate kids, his only friend is a kid.)

Excerpt from when he gave her her weapon: "'More specifically, this for you,' he said. Neo took the box delicately from him. She weighed it in her hands. She shook it. She pressed her ear against it. 'Don't worry, it isn't flowers.' She stuck her tongue out at him. 'Go ahead. Open it.' He sat on a stool by the counter and watched as she untied the string and peeled off the brown paper. Inside was a pink cardboard box. She shot him another glance. He spun his seat around 'It's really not flowers.' She lifted the lid off the box and rummaged around in the pink and white tissue paper before she found what was inside. Her eyes went round like saucers and she hopped up and down. Then she pulled out a parasol." "She slashed it back and forth in the air, with a rapturous expression on her face. 'i can tell you hate it,' Roman said. Hes so awkward when it comes to physical affection, which rip for him, is how Neo is affectionate towards him djskao..

Some examples of that: "Neo blinked back tears and hugged Roman. 'Hey. Don't wrinkle the suit.' But he put a hand on her head and over her shoulder, and that felt more like home than that house and her parents had in a long time." Hes so sweet to her too, like, heres this guy who acts all smug and like he doesnt care about people but the moment one person is actually nice to him they become inseperable.

"-I mean, I'm still not interested in having a sidekick--' she glowered. 'But I couldn't ask for a better partner' Neo leaned over and kissed Roman on the cheek. His face went red. It was fun to mess with him sometimes. She tousled his hair for good measure. He needed a new hat. 'Stooop,' he said, pulling away." Heres him getting flustered easily at affection too :3

He helped Neo kill her parents when they blew up her house too, which is fun. He literally died because he was so angry and worried about Neo that it attracted grimm to him and he got eaten. This man cares so much. He also has a habit of constantly losing his hats :)

ERM SORRY this ended up kind of rambly about his friendship with Neo, theyre just really important to me and thats how he really shines as a character. Other than the fact that he just has fun being a criminal lol

one of the weirdest opinions ive ever heard of AI The Somnium Files: Nirvana Initiative was that they thought Ryuki was so boring they literally couldnt remember his name and im like, WHAT??? he's like, SO interesting! the guy has SO many problems and such a compelling personality and his relationship with Tama is SO funny and complementary and???? how could anybody find THAT guy boring??? like i get finding the game not to their tastes, thats totally okay, it IS a very controversial game. but how could anybody find RYUKI boring, of all characters????

OKAY I GOT DISTRACTED FOR A BIT BY GETTING IN THE ZONE BUT AITSF UDPATE:

1: finished the komeji and shoma ending! i! okay ill be honestly i wasn't super thrilled. I REALLY like the set up stuff in terms of simulation reality, and beleiving its all fake bcs you can't cope, im MASSIVELY INTO THAT. But. I don't. like. Komeji I'm so sorry his just. he's so cube. and he annoys me. I feel like a usually have a pretty high tolerance for this kinda stuff but I just. On paper i get it but in practice I really dont like him. was very happy to see date n co tho. i think it's RIDICULOUSSSS how they explain date's interest in porn like that did not need to be explained. however. its such a stupid explanation it kinda loops back around to being funny to me. sure. why not.

2: ollowing finishing that route i tried to get back to Tokiko to see if i could use that elevator code, bcs she'd been mentioning frayers and i thought i knew what that was but i did not. but no thats only 6 digits so still not right f=/. dang. i also tried to get onto mizuki's half i miss my baby, but i found i needed two names. i know Dahlia is one, but the other is 4 letters so. Currently its probably either for Mame, Lien, or Naix. I suspect Naix the most as an answer.

3: started onto the other route from komeji's somnium. I maintain that these are too easy. It's not like they're like. the problem is that I feel like i'm being treated like I'm an idiot. ryuki and tama talk everything out in such detail, and theres often not a lot of stuff to interact with at all, a lot of which doesn't even let you make the choices like from the last game. like, proper timie usage was SO important to me last game and in this one I've never even racked up 3. i also feel like there's less dream logic, and it's a little disappointing. like, oh tape the cardboard back together. turn on the tv. =( the whimsy. it did improve some in the back half though, and i'll take it!!!

4: liking this dead komeji route WAY MORE than the other one. its not that i hate him that much but i do like the way the plots moving here. what does mame know? whats the masked womans deal? has anyone seen shoma. WHAT IS WRONGGGG WITH RYUKI <33. what is wrong with ryuki is by far my favourite mystery. im more interested in that than i am in the half body killings honestly. (part of that is teh victims i think. we dont really know jin, chikara was annoying at best but the more i learn about him the more i hate him, komeji was annoying, so. honestly i havent really been that upset about any of them dying. tokiko i did love and i am sad she's gone, but also these murders are a little bland following the first game. i just watched a guys head explode could there at least be a little blood? just a little? i know its probably for plot reasons but ive never missed gore so bad. im not even that into gore.

5: somewhere on the dead komeji route i finally figured out what that little green thing in the menu was so i've activated my tamagotchi thingy!! very fun i love it. mines an iris-y one or something? its cuteee!!

6: in terms of the wider mystery: im just really curious how far they're gonna commit to being meta.they did start with asking ME what i knew about the last game so.... looking forward to ryuki's whole deal, actually getting to play as my darling mizuki again, finding out what is UPP with date. i really like the weird videos series i just think they're neat. if the endgame doesn't have a somnium based on those thigns i will be disappointed, surely thats what we're building to.

i left off right before starting mame's somniumin the gameshow room. i don't think shes' actually involved in the killings, but doing that would be REALLY NEAT as a sequel thing, imo. i'd like it. i think shes just hiding stuff bcs she was threatened. assumably i've still got a good chunk of the game to paly! i havent done much if any of the extra eyeballs either, just whats on the way so. i'll get those guys. have been picking up some costumes n stuff tho. you can put tama <33 in pants <3333333333.

Finished AI: Nirvana initiative and on the one hand, that game cooked my brain a little bit to the point I had to sit down and think about things. On that same hand, that's fucking awesome and exactly what I want out of art. There is no other hand that's just sick and I like that. Spoilerific review/ramble under the cut.

First things to praise, we got more Mizuki! I wanted that from the first one and the game delivered on that twofold, and the Somniums are generally much less trial and error (i feel like they made more sense while still maintaining that dream-like quality, whether that was my own experience or design idk but I'm attributing it to design to praise that more), and the difficulty settings, while pure numerical tweaks, are also proper numbers to tweak for difficulty settings stuff (qtes/button mashing/more time to think) in my opinion in the Discourse Of Difficulty, but that's not the point of this I just want to say that's good. Much like this game.

The six year difference thing took me going through the helix and reframing things to actually *get*, but when I got it everything slotted into place? It's really clever, and I really like the way it particularly shifts the view of Ryuki's mental state because of the incredibly strong before/afters and the good/bad days from things.

On that note, Ryuki's a really strong character! Him and Date have a really good dynamic that got me invested early on since well. I really liked Date and Ryuki's relationship with him feels super natural, especially in regards to how they feel about each other and some of the guilt they carry, they're foils, parallels, lovers, everything they have going on Works and that's all there is to say on the matter. Tama also works with him well as this like, mommy figure to him. Not maternal, mommy. I am standing by that because GOD she's so much. I love that for her though. A friend mentioned that she was designed how she is because I think it was Uchikoshi who got introduced to the word "thicc" and it just spiraled from there? However it happened it's hilarious and she's fantastic, she's assertive, she's caring, she's sitting in Boss' tits, what isn't to love about her.

I adore the way the game handles its sexual content tbh, because this game is Horny and I love that for it. It's empathetic even when it's crass (Boss talking about Bibi as her daughter wrt "she hasn't said anything otherwise" and also a well made penis joke) and it just has really good comedic timing on everything. There's some playing with expectations when it does stuff, there's the fact that it once again leans into absurdity, and also they explained Date's porno mag power stuff??? I think it's erroneous and they didn't have to, I could have just taken that as is but the explanation was funny so I don't really care, it made me feel a human emotion (whimsy) which is a good thing when talking about the sheer volume of sexual jokes in this game. I was also really glad to have Greg Chun's Date the entire time because well, that's Date to me and I think his generally very subdued delivery creates *incredible* contrast with when he's hamming it the fuck up.

Like the first game, it's incredibly tightly designed. Basically everything has an explanation, information is always relevant to something and I think it's especially good in this game since there's more twists that are foreshadowed expertly, or you can again, conclude on your own by making inferences with given info, they're really intellectually satisfying and that's fantastic, love that. It might have just been a me thing, but I was completely blindsided by the six year parallel thing, which was the only thing I didn't catch onto beforehand? It comes with a fourth wall break during that reveal but also stuff is foreshadowed before then (mostly through omission imo) so like, maybe you can catch on maybe you can't, kinda wish I could have but it is what it is, the point is that's the only one I'm a little mixed on the execution of, even if I still feel positively about its existence.

Ending wise and thematically, again citing the very empathetic reality of it I mentioned earlier in the context of its sexual humor, this game firmly believes in the potential of humans to work together and be with each other, that moment in the ending where Tearer says "come, look upon true humanity" is really good! We are, it's us working together! It scratches that same kind of itch that Yoko Taro's works do, where things are both very direct and also a little clever about it all depending on the moments. I think Mizuki's speech in the ending is a little ham fisted but it's also Mizuki, it fits her character even if I think spelling it out feels a little erroneous to lay out the entire ethos there. Amame, and to some degree, Ryuki, also give the theme of "yeah life dealt you a shit hand and you made some bad choices, that doesn't mean you're irredeemable it just makes you human" which I am always a sucker for.

I think my only real complaint about this game is Lien. When he's not being Kizzybrained I don't mind him but everything else with him just really did not land with me. His stuff feels like it doesn't have enough time to breathe, and his Somnium does add to it well! It's just not enough.

Other than that though, peak fucking fiction. I love strong women, pathetic men, lots of thought and humor, and a very human story.

3 male characters I love:

Kaname Date, I'm usually not a fan of the pervy character in things, but Date works so well because 1) He thinks all these things and makes comments but he never actually does stuff to people to make them uncomfortable, and 2) It's not his defining characteristic, he's so much more than horny. Like he's a great detective, he cares about his peers and wants to keep them safe, he's a great father figure even if he doesn't really know what he's doing, he's just such a great character. Also Greg Chun's performance is 👌👌👌

Kuruto Ryuki, *slaps roof* this boy can fit so many mental illnesses. I love this boy but goddamn he is a filthy liar whenever he says "I'm fine". But his story was so engaging and you really feel for him when it clicks into place. Like I've been giving the game a second playthrough with the knowledge of the twist and wow so many scenes hit different. Also, this is the first time I've heard Stephen Fu in a big role (The only other time I've heard him is Douma from KNY and he's only appeared a couple of times so far) and wow, I really wanna hear more of his work because his performance was incredible.

Pewter, I dunno he dresses like a fruity Pokémon villain and he's got an awkward yet charming personality. Not to mention, his story in the right path of the first game made me feel so bad for him... Like damn, just let this man be happy please, he deserves it. Also, I know I'm a broken record, but Sean Chiplock's performance, his delivery on the weirder lines are so funny (Yes I am thinking about the chairs line, how did you know?)

3 female characters I love:

Aiba, I fucking adore Aiba. She's the best. I love how she's the straight man to Date's shenanigans IRL but when they're in somniums, Date is the straight man to her shenanigans, I love her excitement whenever she sees bugs, I love how she knows Date so well she can manipulate him into being a better fighter, I love her lil jelly hamster form, I love Erika Harlacher's performance, I just really, really love Aiba.

Mizuki Date, I don't even know where to start with Mizuki... She's honestly one of the best written child characters I've seen in a game. And this poor girl has been through so much in both games but her route in the first game had me sobbing buckets. Not to mention, Corrina Boegetter's performance, they really knocked it out of the park for every single facet of Mizuki's personality. Also they genuinly managed to sound like a twelve year old, that's impressive all by itself.

Shizue Kuranushi, Listen... I am not immune to hot women voiced by Allegra Clark, okay? I'm only human. But seriously... Her design, her personality, her dedication to her co-workers, her office and the funny interactions that come from all the stuff she just doesn't throw away, and the fact that's somehow simultaneously a girlboss and a cringefail milf???? Impressive. She has the range, darling.

Also, quick shout-out to Tama, I adore her and her crazy laugh so much

3 romantic ships I love:

3 platonic dynamics I love:

Kaname Date/Mizuki Date, I mean... Chances are if you've been following me for a while you know that I am just a huge sucker for family dynamics. And the dynamic of adopted father/daughter viewing each other as their real family but being too embarrassed to admit is something I adore.

Kuruto Ryuki/Tama, I love these two so much. I love how IRL Ryuki is just so done with all of Tama's dirty jokes and then in somniums Tama is so done with all of Ryuki's weird suggestions and skits. But also it's their concern for each other, you can tell they're partners. I feel like the best example of this is when Tama insists that Ryuki goes to the hospital no matter how much he protests, like... She just wants him to be safe and healthy...

Ota Matsushita/Mayumi Matsushita, god the Ota route destroyed me when I played through it but seeing them as a family getting through their issues was so sweet. I won't go into detail because it's personal but a few months ago I went offline for a while because of a family emergency and it's because of similar situation to Mayumi. So yeah, playing that hit hard.

Again, I wanna avoid spoilers but the Annihilation Route interrogation. Holy shit that scene was incredible.

The final scene in the final Somnium of Nirvana Initiative. Just... Goddamn that hit hard and the delivery of the "I have no regrets!" Crushed me.

3 least favorite things about it:

Some of the somniums can have some obscure logic but like... Not in the way that you proud when you figure it out, but more angry in a "how the hell was I supposed to figure that out?" Kinda way.

I really hate how Ryuki and Tama just got kinda shoved to the side halfway through Nirvana Initiative. Like they stole the show for a lot of their scenes and then once the Mizuki Route started they barely appeared and when they did, they weren't really shown in the best light, especially Ryuki. Granted there's a plot reason for this but still... It's disappointing. If there's an AI3, I hope they get more screentime.

I feel like Tearer really didn't get enough screentime in Nirvana Initiative, especially when unmasked. Like c'mon this is the main antagonist, give us more of him! Especially considering his entire backstory, that's a lot of really interesting stuff to build off of! Also just... I wanted to hear more of Billy Kametz' villainous performance. It was rare to hear him in those roles but he was so damn good in them.

Silly little ai3 ideas that probably won’t happen but are cool what-if/ things I’d like to see scenarios:

- bibi ryuki and new character as 3 protags (third game, 3 protags, no secret ones this time)

- new protag is someone bibi becomes close too, possible romantic partner (give bibi a gf plz uchikoshi….. plz for me…. Plz)

- marco ofc is one of the main ai balls now, get to see them in somnium and learn about them. Since aiba is loosely based on boss and tama is loosely based on date I imagine Marco as loosely based on the new protagonist character

- takes place maybe like a year after aini, bibi looks less like mizuki now and can express herself more bc she isn’t being kept a secret by boss

- more of kizuna by herself playing a large role w/o lien, maybe since it’s the 3rd game we get Iris kizuna and amame as a significant trio???

- we see boss and bibi’s house plz

- more date and hitomi reconnecting, rly want that, would be cute

- receptionist lady being actually significant to the story would be rly funny

- shoma can return I like him, maybe make him look older like he got some sorta hormone treatment or smth (also I’ve seen transfem shoma hcs before and…. That’s a cool idea….. just saying 👀)

- more frayer stuff but not a ton more, imo it needs to be a very specific amount to be interesting but not take over the story, bc I would also like a more wild murder mystery like in ai1

- new protag character could be shy and reserved but an experienced agent w confidence in their abilities. Serious and cool but has a silly side too that they rarely show. It’s their backstory and stuff that drives the main story and mystery, along w ryuki’s brother bc I feel like we need to learn more about that guy so I think he should also be relevant to the mystery

Again I doubt much of this will happen but it’s what I personally would want from a 3rd aitsf game lol. But. I can always hope. Right.

I've been doing RP stuff for a while now, been in and out with a number of muses, too many to list here lol. OHHH RYUD4TE. i DO NOT like ryud4te at all bc not only the two have a large age gap between each other (ryuki being in his 20's and date in his 40's), they literally have a power dynamic workplace wise that makes the pairing even more uncomfy for me thus i see it as one sided w/ ryuki having a cringe guy crush on date while date @ him goes "oh lol thats kinda funny :) anyways (being pathetic)" type of dynamic

as for tama/ryuki; honestly even if their dynamic is v great to see as they both treat each other as equals along w/ taking care of each other too, it's rlly hard to see them as romantic considering that. tama is his eyeball whose doesn't have a physical form at all/whose physical form can only show up through the prosthetic eyeball which it's her + somniums so i rather prefer of seeing them as platonic to me
