How do I sincerely relay that I am a very plain and boring person (at least, in a general sense of the term by society's standards), but without it sounding self-deprecating, pitiful, or edgy?
#like the easiest way is to just describe yourself as plain and mostly boring#but people hear that go ): aw dude I bet you're fine#and I gotta be like yes of course..*I* don't think I'm boring. I'm preparing you to be underwhelmed#that we should probably participate in your interests without regard to mine because#omit the because there‚ that wasn't supposed to be there#or they act like I think my interests are niche and that they couldn't possibly understand my interests#and it's not like that even a little#So I can't use something with a negative connotation like calling myself plain and boring#any ideas?#op

ok i put a longer post abt tim's Emotional State in drafts for when my brain is less melted but re: tim and going to college im just gonna get a lil silly with it. hear me out.
i have this whole vague story in my mind for tim's college days moonlighting as red robin as he tries and figures out what he wants out of life. (it's a while after rr leaves off and all because he's like. Super Depressed for a hot minute and then has to drag himself through actually bothering to get his GED and applying to college, etc., but eventually lucius is like hey. you're great with gadgets, and you clearly love tinkering. i'd hire you for r&d in a heartbeat but you need at the least a bachelor's of engineering. i know you have a lot of the technical skills, but you need a degree. so tim goes ugh fine i'll get a goddamn engineering degree how hard can it possibly be.)
anyways. i think it's a universal experience that if you go to college and you hang with the STEM crowd, you will unfortunately get to know at least one Fucking Guy. it's like brentwood arc; tim does make friends, but there is just this One Fucking Guy he cannot stand and will never stand. this Fucking Guy is in the common room playing his guitar at midnight. he's drunk and yelling and laughing really loud when people have exams coming up. he's convinced everyone adores him. there's also a detective/supernatural plot going on. the subplot is just that tim hates This Fucking Guy.
at some point, there's a story beat where he as red robin has to rescue That Fucking Guy from a real dicey situation, and That Fucking Guy is really shaken and grateful to him, and he's like okay. maybe. maybe we are making progress. but then the next time he encounters This Fucking Guy as tim drake, the guy is just like. "ohhhh hey drake you missed it last night, it was AWESOME!!! i had to save red robin from a KILLER ROBOT. he's pretty cool though i guess. i bet you wish you could be more like him huh??" and tim is just. I Will Not Grind My Teeth About This. I Will Not. his life is a fucking joke. he dismantles the toaster oven in the common room kitchen to cope. it's definitely to cope and not just so that That Fucking Guy won't be able to heat up his pop tarts in the morning.
at another point, This Fucking Guy looks at street mode, lowkey, unremarkable Normal Car-looking redbird and goes, aw, dude, i thought your dad is loaded?? he only got you a generic-ass sedan?? that sucks lol, if you want we can take my car down to the game instead. and tim is just Say One More Fucking Word About My Baby I Dare You I Fucking Dare You One More Fucking Word.
(also i like to toy with the idea of this being a university in metropolis - he's out of gotham, but not too far. keeps him from getting antsy about what if he's needed because he can get right back over there. and in the meantime, he can hang out with kon and kara a lot, and occasionally enable and be enabled by lois lane and her snooping habits. there's another subplot in which tim and lois get up to shenanigans. at least once.)
it's sort of an introspective thing of him trying to come to terms with the way he no longer wants a fully normal life the way he always used to assume he would - he has the option to walk away from the cape now, like he always thought he would one day, but he just can't give it up anymore. he's fallen into the same black hole he watched dick and bruce dive headlong into. it's also about him finding joy in tinkering and working with his hands and getting to spend more time as tim drake first and foremost. and it's about him venting to kon about That Fucking Guy while they have a lil picnic on the green while kon loses his absolute shit laughing. all against the backdrop of a little mystery or something. <3
OH and also, most importantly. zoanne wilkins is there and laughing at him for assuming college would be easy. and kon gets her into wendy the werewolf stalker. My City Now.
#rimi talks#rambles#tim#like.... do u see the vision. there are emotions underneath here#but right now i have a migraine so its silly time first and foremost. Tim Hates That Fucking Guy#we've all known a Fucking Guy right? im pretty sure its a universal experience.#the stories i could tell about the Fucking Guy i knew. man.

Hiiiiiiiiii bb,
Maybe you could write about Eddie being absolute shit at beerpong and he loses to his crush and he gets so mad that he pouts all night about it. 🤔😅
🤡 @trashmouth-richie
Ahahahaha fuck you but yes I'll write it.
Warnings: language, drinking, characters are around 21-22 years old
WC: 802
--
"Hah!" you exclaim as you sink the ping pong ball into the final cup. "We win!" You turn and give Robin a high-five, sticking your tongue out at Steve and Eddie.
"You said you were good at this," Eddie hisses at his teammate, raking his fingers through his curls in frustration.
Steve just shrugs. "I was, back in high school. Guess I'm out of practice." He reaches into the cooler and pulls out two more beers, offering one to Eddie. "To losing," he holds up his can, frowning when Eddie doesn't do the same. "Dude, what crawled up your ass?"
"Nothing," Eddie huffs, taking a swig. His eyes flick over to you, already engrossed in a conversation with some guy he vaguely remembers from Hawkins High. You're laughing and taking small sips of your drink.
"Oh, I see," Steve smirks. "You're upset because you wanted to impress your little girlfriend, huh?"
"Not my girlfriend," Eddie mumbles, glancing at you again when he hears you giggle. God, what was so funny that you were still talking to this loser?
Steve sighs, crossing his arms over his chest. "I don't get it. A few months ago, you were fine with just being her friend. Now you're getting all bent out of shape over a stupid game of pong?"
Before Eddie can respond, he feels an arm sling around his shoulder. "Aw, whassa matter, Romeo?" Robin teases, words slightly slurred. "Sad without your Juliet?"
"Shut up, both of you!" Eddie undoes himself from Robin's grasp. "'M gonna take a leak, and then I'm outta here." He pushes through the crowd of people and stumbles to the bathroom.
Eddie never used to think twice about impressing you; it's not that he didn't care, but you two were just friends. He didn't overthink his jokes or get self-conscious about his hair, because he didn't need to. But that all changed a few months ago: he was sick as a dog, curled up in bed with the worst flu he'd ever had. You'd showed up with some homemade soup and crackers, staying for hours to make sure that he drank enough water and took medicine to keep his fever down. After that, he saw you in a whole new light. He never knew someone could care about him like you do. And it doesn't hurt that you're gorgeous, either.
He leaves the bathroom, hastily wiping his hands on his jeans, and nearly bumps into someone. "Watch it, du--oh, hi," he breathes out, unable to meet your gaze. "Sorry 'bout that."
"Y'okay?" you ask, concern evident by your tone. Eddie practically melts when you grab his hand to pull him back towards you. "What's going on?"
"'M fine." He tries a small smile. "Just tired." That part isn't a complete lie; he's tired of watching opportunities to be with the girl of his dreams pass by.
You give a little laugh. "You can't pull one over on me, Eddie Munson," you say. "Now, tell me what's really on your mind."
"I, uh, really thought I had that beer pong game in the bag." Another half-truth.
"You're upset because of that?" You furrow your brows. "'S not like we bet any money."
Eddie massages the nape of his neck. "I looked like an idiot," he supplies. "Kept tryin' to get the stupid fuckin' ball in the stupid fuckin' cup..."
"You didn't look like an idiot; we were just having fun," you reassure him. "If anything, you look like an idiot now, getting all pouty about it." You pause. "Wait...were you trying to show off for someone?" When he looks away, you clap your hands excitedly. "Who is it? C'mon, I won't tell." You mime zipping your lips and throwing away the key.
"No one." Eddie shakes his head.
"Liar! Look, you're totally blushing. Tell me tell me tell m--"
"It's you, okay!" he blurts out, unable to contain his secret any longer. "I was gonna--ugh, I was gonna say something like, 'you owe the winner a date,' or some cheesy shit like that, like in those dumb romance movies you watch--"
"They are not dumb!" you retort, giving him a playful shove. "But I am gonna steal that line. So, Eddie, you owe the winner a date."
His eyebrows shoot up in surprise. "Really? You wanna go on a date with me?"
"Of course!" you say with a smile. "You think I'd risk the flu for just anyone?"
Eddie beams, pulling the keys to his van from his jacket pocket. "What are we waiting for, then? Wanna grab some burgers at Benny's with me?"
"I'd love to," you return his smile, then bring your lips to his ear to whisper, "maybe after, we can go back to your place and you can show me what you are good at."

[Image ID: Series of tweets from Shane Morris (@/ IAmShaneMorris) on 21 May 19 reading: Y'all wanna hear a story about the time I accidentally transported a brick of heroin from Los Angeles to Seattle? I bet. Alright, let's do this... (a thread)
I was living in Newport Beach, California, kinda just -- trying to figure life out. My buddy Tyler calls e up out of the clear blue, and he's like, "Hey dude, you wanna do the most epic road trip ever?"
I'm like, "Sure."
At the time, Tyler was a boat mechanic in South Florida, so I fly down to Miami, and I end up staying with one of his coworkers for a few days, until I can buy a Honda Shadow 750 for like $2,700. (He already had one, so I got a matching bike so we could share spare parts.)
From Miami, we set off across the United States, staying at the kind of motels along the way you see on movies like No Country For Old Men. If you're going to ride across the United States on a motorcycle, do it on two lane roads. It's worth it.
We end up swinging down through Mexico, and this isn't really important to the story, but we pulled over to rest in the middle of the desert, and these wild horses walked up to us, and were actually like... oddly friendly. They let us pet them. It was super cool. Anyway...
After like 10 days, we made it back into Southern California. He had an uncle in Temecula, and my ex was in Newport Beach, so we both rested for a few days. Riding a bike across the country takes a toll of your body. So we decided to switch it up.
We decided to sell our bikes, and buy a 1979 Dodge Ram van. I want to say we paid like $600 each for it -- $1200 all in. It needed a little work, but the important part was it was all easy stuff. We named the van Cassandra, and wrote our names on the door.
Picture of two people standing in front of a van. Picture of two people sitting on the curb next to a van.
The plan was easy: We'll drive up the Pacific Coast highway, and camp all along the way. We took the middle seats out of the van, so we could sleep in it at night incase it was raining. Then we went to REI to get hammocks for hammock camping.
On our way up, we stopped in Santa Barbara, and picked up my sister. At the time, she was in school at UCSB, and she was planning on flying home to the Bay Area to see our dad, so I was like, "Just come camping on the beach with us." So she did.
2 people standing on the beach.
Driving north, we made it so pretty cool spots, like Bixby Canyon Bridge. All along the way, we're letting anyone who meets us write their name on the van and take a picture. It was... fucking awesome.
Picture of a person sitting on a bridge. Picture of 2 people standing on the edge of a cliff next to the van.
Around Big Sir, our van had its first problem. The rear drum brakes were making awful noises, and locked up. I ended up buying a set of Craftsman tools, end then I did a brake job in the parking lot of a Wal Mart.
While I was there, I was like, "I'm gonna do a few other things." When I got the van, I changed the oil, and... that's it. (I know I should have done more of a tune up, but honestly, the van was running fine. The interior was even pretty nice.)
On these old Dodge vans, the engine access is inside the car, in between the driver and the passenger. I hadn't even lifted it up when I bough it. (I'm an idiot. I know.) So, I decided to change the spark plugs, the fuel filter, and the air filter. I'm So glad I did.
I opened up the engine cover, and sitting right on top of the engine was like, grass, straw and little bits of carpet. A mouse had made a home, right there on top of the engine block. I'm lucky it hadn't started a fire. So I cleared everything out, and changed the plugs/filter.
I remember yelling at Tyler, because he was the one who poured the oil in, and I was like, "How the fuck did you not notice there was a fucking rat's nest on top of the fucking engine block when you were pouring in the oil?!" And he was like, "It's an old car." LOL. WTF.
So anyway, we drive up into Oakland, and meet up with my friends there. We stayed at their house overnight, smoked weed, ate a meal, and chilled out. Then, we set off for Mt. Shasta, and Lake Shasta. (It's a really beautiful lake.)
Picture of a group of people standing in front of the van.
We camp at Mt. Shasta. It's beautiful. The lake was really low, but the water felt great. (Not really critical to the story, but go if you ever get the chance.)
Picture of two people around a campfire. Picture of a bridge.
Finally, we get up into Oregon, into the Cascades, and head into Washington. The whole time, we're hiking, camping, spending time in nature... it's really just one of the coolest experiences of my life. (Not sure what summit this was.)
So, here's the thing about old cars with carburetors - you needs to adjust them for altitude. An ideal fuel ratio at sea level is called stoichiometric -- which means 14.7 parts air, to 1 part fuel. As you gain altitude, you need to lean out your carb jets.
Mount Jefferson is something like 10,000 feet, so as we're driving up, probably around 6,000-7,000 feet, the van starts running way too rich. It was obvious. So... I was like, "Tyler, pull over. I'm gonna lean out these jets."
One a single barrel carb, you're only dealing with a few screws and springs, and basically.. you just kinda guess at it. (LOL.) So, I'm just listening to the engine, and then I would reach over and tap the gas pedal to see how it sounded.
So, Tyler steps out of the van, and I'm hunched over the engine, just twisting on the screws, and I hit the gas, and Tyler is like. "Holy Shit!" At first, I'm like, "Oh my God, something is on fire." So I pop up, and look around and I'm like, "What?"
Tyler, is like "What the fuck is that? I look down at the carb, and I'm like... "I dunno? Which part are you looking at? Does something look broken?" He's like, "No Dude! Look On The Cover!"
I look to my left, on the underside of the engine cover, and there's what appears to be a brick of aluminum foil, and it's taped up with aluminum tape that clamshell cover. Immediately, I'm like, "Oh shit what the fuck?"
So, I stop what I'm doing, turn the engine off, and start slowly prying this aluminum brick off the underside of the clamshell. Tyler is freaking out. (He doesn't do drugs.) He's like, "Oh my God! It's like on cops when they find drugs hidden in the car!"
I get the brick untaped, and then undo like seven layers of foil. They used a Lot of foil on this thing. What I found was a white, perfectly shrink wrapped brick. I thought it was coke, so I cut open a bit of the corner, put some on my finger, and rubbed it on my gums.
Edit of Finn and Jake from Adventure Time with flames and a galaxy background with text reading: Drugs.
If you've ever done coke, you know it's kinda hot, and then it makes your gums numb. This definitely wasn't coke, and I'm not the type of dude who does heroin. (Just, don't do heroin. Seriously. It's no good.)
So, Tyler and I are standing next to each other, when I hear tires on the gravel behind us. Let me paint you a picture: We're standing there with the hood up, clamshell open, side by side, with a brick of pure heroin.
Who do you think rolled up?
Man, a goddamn Park Ranger rolls up behind us. Just so you know, park rangers are the police. They have guns, and they just happen to work in a park. They can arrest you and everything.
I'm holding a brick of heroin in my hands, and there's a park ranger 30 feet behind me. So I reach down, and pretend to go into my tool kit. Thankfully my hands are greasy as hell, and I can pick up some tools. So I slide the brick under the seat.
I pop around with and pretend I'm putting a socket set on a breaker bar, and I'm like, "Oh hey there. How can I help you?" The guy is like, "You guys having trouble?" I'm like, "I'm just trying to jet the carbs." He's like, Oh, I remember doing that when I was your age."
Then he's like, "You ever done it before?" I'm like, "I'm kinda just learning as I go here. We're from California." The dude laughs and he's like, "Here, I'll show you."
So the ranger walks over, and he's like, "I remember these old Ram vans. So much room."
We open up the clamshell, and this guy's knee is like two inches from this brick. Man, I'm trying so hard to act normal, but Tyler? He's not playing it cool at all. He's like, "You know, I'm sure Shane can figure it out. We don't need you wasting your time on us."
The ranger is like, "Oh it's no big deal. Most of the time I'm just telling people to put their trash higher up, so the bears can't get to it." So he's just chatting with us, and I'm telling him how we bought the van and drove all the way up the coast, etc.
Finally, we get the jets set, and the ranger is like, "Alright, you boys stay safe." Lile, he had no clue he was probably two inches away from the biggest drug bust in the history of Oregon state parks.
Once he drives off, Tyler is freaking out, "Oh my God!? What are we gonna fucking do, man?" I'm just like, "Uh, we're gonna make a shit ton of money selling a brick of heroin." So, I wrapped it up, and just stuck it in the bottom of the cooler in freezer bags, under the ice.
Then, we drive up into Seattle, and I call one of my buddies who I know sells a shit ton of weight. I'm like, "Yo ******, we need to talk." I won't go into all the details, but I managed to sell it all to one person. It was lower risk. Plus, I'm not a drug dealer.
For the record, my buddy Tyler wouldn't take any of the money. Eventually, I convinced him to let me give him $600 for the van, so I could say I bought the van myself. (The van was in his name.) But this story isn't over yet...
I end up selling the van to some hippies from Ashland, and then move to Atlanta. About a year goes by, and I'm not even thinking about this van anymore. Then I get a phone call from a number I don't know. I let it go to voicemail.
The same number calls me again, 30 seconds later. So I answer it. "Hello?" The voice on the other line: "Hey, can I speak to Shane?" I'm like, "Speaking?"
Dude is like, hey, my dad gave me your number. He said he sold a van to you about a year ago?
Immediately, I'm like, "Yeah, he sold me a van." The guy is like, "Wow, that's great news. I'm so glad I found you. So, I don't like to talk about this, but I was in jail. I had a substance abuse problem, and I ended up going to jail because I made some mistakes."
I'm thinking, "What's the angle here?" So I'm like, "Oh, well -- that sucks. Anyway, how can I help you?" So the dude goes into this crazy ass long story. He tells me about how he has so many memories with the van. Yeah, it was in his dad's name, but it was his first car.
"I know it's just a beat up old van, but I'd really like to buy it back from you. Dad says you paid something like $1200 for it. I think I'd be willing to go as high as say, $1800 to get it back. The memories are just worth that to me."
The light goes on in my head. Jail. Substance abuse. He wants the van back. He is willing to pay $600 back over what I paid for it. (Street value, bagged up, if you slow-sell it, there was something like $40,000 worth of heroin in that brick.) This dude wanted his brick back.
The guy didn't go to jail because he had a substance abuse problem. No heroin junkie can afford $40,000 in heroin. The guy did tie because he was the plug. So... I decide to make some money.
Picture of Phoebe from Friends doing an evil laugh
I don't own this van anymore, but I definitely know who I sold it to, and I know I can buy it back, so... I start spinning a story. I'm like, "Man $1800 just won't do it. I've put a lot of money into this van, and it's really running like a top now. It's my daily driver."
He's like, "Oh yeah?" I'm like, "Yeah dude. She's in great condition. I redid the carb, the breaks, all the fuel lines, put some tires on it, redid the carpet on the interior, a lot. I've probably put at least $5,000 into this thing." He's like, "Wow, you really did a lot."
So he's like, "Where are you located?" I'm like, "Oh, I'm up in Ashland, Oregon." (Remember: I was in Atlanta.) He's like, Oh, that's not too bad. If it runs as well as you say, I may just drive up there with a friend and then drive it back down here."
So finally he's like, "I respect that you put a lot of work into it. Like I said, the van has a lot of sentimental value to me, and I'm glad to hear you took care of it. I think I could offer you $6200. That's what you paid for it, plus the $5000 you say you invested."
So I said, "Alright, you have a deal." As soon as we hung up, I called the people in Oregon I sold the van to (I kinda sorta knew them through friends), and I was like, "Hey, do you still have that van?" They're like, "Yeah, but it's not running." I'm like, "Oh?"
I was like, "You care if I buy it back from you?" The guy was like, "Dude, I'll sell it for $100 if you just get it out of my driveway." So I was like, "Sold." I booked a ticket to Portland the next day, and then rented a car, and drove to Ashland.
Along the way, I called up the old owner of the van's son, and I'm like, "Hey will you be free to drive up this weekend?" He's like, "Oh yeah. Totally. I can come up." It will only take me two days to drive up there." It was Tuesday. We agreed to meet on Sunday.
I fly into Portland, rent a car, and then get to Ashland on Wednesday. I go to an auto parts store, and buy a battery jumper kit, and some hand tools. I need to get the van running. I go to see the van, and it's sitting there, pretty dusty, but otherwise okay.
TL:DR -- the only thing wrong with the van was a bad battery. This couple just didn't want to spend any money on the van, because they had recently purchased a Subaru Outback. (Go figure. It's Ashland.) So, I changed the battery in an auto parts store parking lot.
Then, I took the van to one of those self cleaning car wash places, and gave it a good wash and vacuum. Honestly, it cleaned up really nice. At this point, I decided to check in with the guy, and kinda fuck with him a little bit in the process.
The guy answers really fast, and he's like "Shane! Hey buddy, what's up?" I'm like, hey, I do want to mention one thing about the van, and I hope this doesn't change your plans about buying it." He goes silent. "What's up?"
I was like, "I don't want you to be mad but, uhm, after I bought the van, my friends and I... we uh... we wrote on the outside of it with permanent marker. I can't get it off. I tried." And I hear him sigh like Hella loud. "Oh, that's fine. I can repaint it."
I'm like, "I want to be fair on the price, because I didn't tell you. So... how about I knock $200 off? I just want to pay whatever is fair to get the marker off." He says, "Thanks for telling me. I'll accept the $200 discount. See you Sunday?" I'm like, "Yup!"
So, next things next: I need to make a fake brick of heroin. So I head to a Goodwill, and buy a medium sized paperback book. It was "The Pelican Brief". I thought that was a funny detail for some reason. (Good book. Also a good movie.)
Then I get in my rental, and took off to Medford, because I couldn't find aluminium tape anywhere near Ashland. I got there, got my tape, and then bought some heavy duty foil in a grocery store. From there, I drove back to Ashland.
Making the fake brick was actually pretty easy. I just wrapped it up the same way I remember the brick being wrapped, and then taped it down with aluminium tape the same way I remember it being taped--kinda like a tic-tac-toe board. They had taped the Shit out of it.
Then... I just kinda waited. On Friday, I got a phone call from the dude letting me know he was on the road, and I said "Hey, my mechanic says we can use his bay in case you want to inspect it." And the dude was like, "Oh that won't be necessary." I'm like, "Oh I insist."
On Saturday, I called a local mechanic and I was like, "Hey, I'm selling my van to some people from out of state, and I was hoping I could give you $50 in case they want to use one of your bays to look under the care for a moment?"
(Car buying tip: Any mechanic worth his salt will take you up on this offer. It's good for both the buyer and the seller to have a mechanic take a look. They know they'll be getting any work on any fix they identify.)
We meet at this local shop on a Sunday afternoon. The guy shows up in a late model, silver Nissan Altima. He's heavily tattooed, and so is his friend. These guys look like real, OG, Mexican bangers. Like, dude is wearing the blue Nike Cortez's and Dickies. It's That look.
Immediately, I realize these aren't the soft dudes I think they are. They're real gangster, they move real weight, and I'm doing something incredibly stupid. I'm about to rip off two guys who look like they bury people neck deep and let coyotes eat your face off.
But I'm there, and they're in front of me, so I gotta go through with it. So I give them a tour. We walk around the van. It's clean. It has tire shine on it. I've washed it, and even waxed it. It looks as good as a 1979 Dodge can look.
The guy is like, "So you've done some engine work?" I'm like, "Yeah, carb, plug wires, distributor, etc." He's like, "Can I take a look?" So I help him lift the clamshell, and there's no rats nest, it's looking clean-ish... and it's sort silent. So I talk...
"When I got in here, there was a Huge rat's nest. I cleaned that out, then I got to work on the carb, the plugs, wires, belts, hoses. It's all new in there." Then, the dude reaches over, and straight up taps the aluminium brick. I start sweating. He looks at me. I look at him.
The first thing that came out of my mouth was. "I didn't bother redoing any of the heat shielding on the clamshell. Honestly, I prefer having some heating coming off the block in the winter, but I can see why you did it. Southern California is hot."
I was trying so hard to play it dumb as hell, and I sold it. He says back to me, "Yeah, this tape costs about $20 a roll, but it's worth it to beat the heat." I laugh, "Yeah, the AC just barely works. I think you've got a leak in the system somewhere."
Then he throws a curveball at me. "Can I take it for a drive?" I'm like, "Oh totally." He's like, "Do you mind if my friend drives behind me, in case it breaks down?" I say, "Oh you go right ahead." At this point, I'm thinking he's going to drive off, never to be seen again.
He's gone for about 20 minutes, and then he comes back. He's got a big smile on his face, and he's like, "Wow, it still drives great. Let's negotiate." So I'm like, "Well, you did say $6,000?" He comes back at me and he's like, "Well, I gotta ship this van back."
I'm like, "Okay, well... what's a fair price?" He says, "You have the title here in your hands?" I say. "Well, actually, I had to do a lost title But I can mail it to you in like a week." (The reality was I did, but I hadn't done the transfer from the couple yet.)
He's like, "Alright, you know, you seem like a good guy. You can mail it in a week?" I'm like, "Yup." He says, "$5000. Because it'll cost me $1,000 to ship. You're a wild man for driving this old beast as far as you did." So we shake hands. It's a deal.
I have a notepad with me, and I say, "Alright, let me write you up a bill of sale." So I write his name, and my name. His address, and my "address" (a local Ashland address where I definitely have never lived), and the "cost" of the vehicle. This is a funny wrinkle...
I said to the guy, "Hey, I'm going to write on the bill of sale that you only paid $1,000 for the van, so you can avoid paying more taxes in California when you go register it." (You pay taxes on the sale.) He's like, "Oh, thanks. I didn't think of that."
Using the hood to press on, I sign my name, he signs his, and then he's like, "Alright, here's the $5,000. Cash." So he hands reaches into his pocket, and when he does, he moves his shirt in such a way that he obviously exposes a gun in his waistband. He pauses.
As he's handing me the cash, he smiles and says, "Thanks for taking care of my van, Shane. I'm relieved to see you left my heat shielding how it was. There's a lot of value in heat shielding. Some might say it's worth quite a bit." He gets this look in his eyes. It's dark.
He continues. "You seem like a smart guy. Smart guys don't talk about things they find. They might even buy new aluminium tape, but be careless enough to leave the roll in the back seat." My throat turned into a knot. Like, my whole mouth went dry as fuck.
He stares into my fucking soul. Like, Into me, fam. Then he gets this big ass smile on his face grabs me by my shoulder, and he smiles, "If you were even smarter, you would have asked for $10,000." The he starts laughing, and the guy he's with starts laughing.
"You know, you're a hustler Shane. What do you do?" I breathe a sigh of relief. "I'm a web developer." He says, "You could have been a stone cold hustler in another life. I've never been hustled before, but you had the cajones to get your money. I like that."
They hadn't checked to see what was inside the foil. The only knew that I taped it back. So I went with it. "Well, you know. I found it when I was working on the van. I just didn't know how I'd ever sell it, so it's been in my freezer for a year now." He busts up laughing.
"Homey, you kept it in the freezer? That's wild man." So then we just sorta chop it up outside this mechanic's shop for about 20 minutes. He and I had the same taste in rap music. I wanted to just keep him happy. I was trying to think of my exit plan.
Finally, he's like, "Alright, you know I don't want this van, but ship it to me anyway. Here's $5,000. Keep the change." To be clear -- he had give me $5,000 already for the van, and then gave me Another $5,000. I played it cool. "Close enough to $10K." I dapped him up.
As soon as they left the parking lot, I sprinted into the mechanic's office where he was sitting, and he was like, "Son, that was the most obvious drug deal I have ever seen. I already called the police." I felt my heart go from 0 to one million.
Then the mechanic winks at me, and he's like, "I'm just fucking with you. Man, this is Oregon. Everyone smokes weed. Calm down. I didn't call the cops." He sees my face, and he's like, "You should have seen the look on your face." (I wasn't amused.)
The problem was, the clock was ticking. I didn't know when those dudes were going to open the foil and realize I'd just hustled them, so I was like, "Hey, if I give you $200, will you let me keep that van parked here for two days until I can get it shipped?"
He's like, "If it's here longer than two days, I'm gonna charge you. If it stays here, it's mine." So I was like, "That's fine. I'll be back" (I knew at that moment the van was going to belong to him. I was never coming back. Most states have laws for mechanics like that.)
I walked out of the mechanics office, and then walked literally seven miles back to my rental, parked at my little motel. Ashland is a small town, and I had picked the cheapest motel. I wanna say it was like a Super 8 or something?
The road this motel is on is like, pretty long and straight. Like, you could see a full quarter mile down the road, no problem. As I'm about 400 yards away from the entrance, I see a silver Nissan Altima pull in, and go to the front office.
As I walk closer, I see two guys get out, and I realize it's the same guys. They haven't seen me, but we're staying at the same fucking motel. So, I start speed walking. When I check in, it took a while, so I knew I needed to hustle so I wasn't seen.
I took off the flannel I was wearing, so I'd be in a white tank top. I folded the flannel up super small, and walked as fast as someone can walk without looking like a moron. My room was on the back side of the motel, upstairs.
Basically, as soon as I cleared the vision line of the back wall, I went into a full sprint, and ran as fast as I could up the stairs, and into my room. No sooner than the moment I slammed my door, I went over the the drapes, and peeked out. The silver Altima was driving around.
I shit you not, these guys parked two spaces away from my rental car, and their room was Directly below mine. It's a damn cheap hotel, so I could kinda/sorta hear them talking. Not word for word, but definitely the vocal tones, plus their TV.
When I saw I was quiet as a mouse, I mean, I just sat in bed, didn't turn the TV on, didn't move, and when I had to pee, I held it. I was terrified. Then... I heard it.
I heard the guy yell. (start all caps) "Motherfucker! I'm going to fucking kill him!" (end caps) Then I hear them screaming, but it's not clear what they're saying. They yell for like 15 minutes. Then they get quiet. My phone rings. It's a blocked number.
I sent it to voicemail. It rings again. Blocked number. I sent it to voicemail. Then, I hear them yelling a bit more, and then I hear the door downstairs slam. I peek out of the little gap in the drapes, and watch them take off.
As soon as I saw the car clear the corner, I left.
I grabbed my backpack, flew down the stairs, and got into my rental. I was getting the fuck out of Ashland before I got killed. I had been on the road about an hour when the guy calls me again, this time, from his real number. Not a blocked number.
I answered, "Hey M*****, What's up?" He's yelling, (start all caps) "We've got a fucking problem! You need to bring me my money, right now!" (end caps)
I was did what I do, and talked shit-- "I take it you're not a big fan of John Grisham novels. You should really give him a chance before you get angry."
The dude flew off the handle. Like he's just shouting. (start all caps) "Motherfucker I will kill you!" (end caps) over and over, so finally I'm like, M****. Calm down. Just listen. I think we can make a deal here." So he gets a little less on edge. "What's your deal?"
I said, "Look, I know you're staying at the (Whatever) Hotel. We'll meet up there. You show me you've got your gun on the hood of your car so I know I'm safe." He's like, "Okay. And?" I said, "Then, I'll take back The Pelican Brief, wrapped in foil."
"... and then I'll give you what you really want. A Tom Clancy novel. Everyone loves war fiction." He got quiet. He didn't say shit. "I'll fucking murder you, Shane. You robbed me. You fucking die from this." Then he hung up.
In 2017, the guy I ripped off for his brick of heroin was found guilty, with four other guys, of raping and murdering a 13 year old girl. They were all prominent MS-13 gang members. He got LWOP'd in his sentence. So it looks like he won't be killing me.
... and that's the story of the time I bought a van with a brick of heroin in it that belonged to an MS-13 gang member, sold the brick, and then sold him his van back with a wrapped up John Grisham novel, for $10,000. Somehow, I didn't die.

Everything Falls (Into Place) | 23
*Banner by the incredible @bangtansmauyeondan
Pairing: OT7 x Fem Reader
Genre: College!AU, Roommate!AU, Fluff, Humor, Smut
Summary: Your new roommates are unbearably nice and unbearably hot. Good thing you're an adult who is fully capable of platonic friendships with the opposite sex, right?
Word Count: 861
AN: So once I finish posting the rest of the chapters, I'm thinking of writing some drabbles within this universe to help flesh things out a bit more? Maybe via request if there's stuff people would want to see? Not sure how all this stuff works on here/protocols or whatever so we'll play it by ear I guess. Also sorry the formatting for the texts is such shit, copying and pasting from the AO3 editor made some things weird lol.

Not the other person but I would love to hear more about one of ur other Ocs. They all sound so great! Any is fine, i would love to hear some hcs u have of them if you're comfortable sharing ofc, no pressure! ❤️❤️
pls i got excited when i saw this ask skdjsks thank you!! i know you asked for some headcanons but this ended up getting so long and rambly 😭 under the cut for hcs i’ve always wanted to get out of my system <3
maya quimby from golden + her otp and brotps <3
maya grew up feeling neglected. like she’s aware her parents are important people with important jobs but for once she just wanted to be someone’s priority. she doesn’t remember the last time they put her first
i remember labelling maya as my snobby oc because of her lifestyle but over time i fleshed her out and realized she’s really not. she just grew up rich and a bit out of touch with the real world but deep down, she’s very sensitive and despite her lavishly displaying her money, she never does it to make anyone feel like she’s above them. she’s just trying to fill the void that her dad left in her life
i chose phoenix as her ro because out of the four, p always came off to me as the one who’s as rational as they are emotionally intelligent. and maya easily lets her emotions get the best of her; when she gets overwhelmed, she shuts the world out. she needs someone like phoenix who *i think* can understand what she feels but also talk some sense into her and keep her lucid before she mentally shuts down completely
also phoenix and maya are my pairing that i literally did not expect to be one of my angstier otps until mila dropped the pinterest boards and i looked at p’s and saw some pins about how they’re always choosing but never chosen and those are the same pins in maya’s board and i just went “well…. 🥲”
random maya fact to break the angst — she studies law and loves fashion design. she’s like lehsa’s elle woods hehe look up sabrina carpenter’s “sue me” mv and that’s maya <3
OKOK LESS ANGSTY HCS!!!! it actually didn’t take long for maya to develop a crush on phoenix and i don’t blame her because he’s so kind and so pretty with the sexiest brain but maya is soooooo in denial. she’s like “hmm nope. he’s just a nice guy i bet he’s nice to everyone” — in an au where my all golden ocs exist together, kaidan and maya would bond over that because friends who are in denial together stay together <333
at the same time, kaidan and maya would push each other like “dude i’m TELLING you lira’s into you! stop being so fucking blind” “fuck you take your own advice” pls i literally LOVE these two so much i would lay down my life for them (lira is my k-mancer btw)
despite kaidan not being openly affectionate, he deeply cares for maya. he’s actually the first in the team to see right through her “rich girl” front and can sense that she’s really lonely. i think that’s why their friendship works so well. kaidan doesn’t care about her money and that’s exactly what maya wants. someone who genuinely enjoys being around her regardless of her wealth and status
these pictures are the closest visual representation of kaidan and maya’s friendship
maya also becomes close to blaze because they’re both into fashion. he’s the first member in the team she took to her fashion studio. sometimes she would show him all the best places to shop. on one of blaze’s birthdays, she designs a jacket for him 🥺
in an au where maya and my b-mancer, kirsten, coexist, maya would be the biggest blaze x kirsten shipper shdusksk fast forward to the relationship stage, phoenix x maya and blaze x kirsten go on double dates <3 — side note: phoenix is kirsten’s closest friend in the group
kaidan, blaze and maya are my chaotic three. but sometimes it’s against blaze’s will when kaidan and maya kidnap him for a night out skdjsks this trio makes phoenix get all fuzzy like “aw my girl gets along with my friends 🥹” while asher’s patience is wearing thin LMFAO
ok back to phoenix and maya — so yk how i said she’s in denial right? it’s not that she doesn’t trust him. she wants to because she really thinks he’s a good guy. she just has trust issues in general. the longer phoenix goes trying to get to know her, maya’s urge to flee just gets stronger because she’s so scared of the good thing they have going on and how good it makes her feel but at the back of her mind she knows it’s only a matter of time before it all crashes and burns
this is a tentative hc and it might change depending on how the revelation goes in the game about a and k wanting to kill mc but out of all my golden girls, maya will take it the hardest. she’s already got enough baggage to begin with then you add her finding out about her vampire bestie wanting to kill her just because. and the guy she trusts and is completely in love with kept it from her. and phoenix would probably be so desperate to console her and ask her to hear him out but maya would be so blinded by rage and betrayal at this point that even though she knows phoenix was against asher and kaidan’s choice, it would fly over her head and she’d start asking “why? what did i ever do to you?” and she’d start saying things she doesn’t mean because she’s hurt. so yeah. that shit would send her on a spiral she wouldn’t be able to keep a clear head. we need a therapist in lehsa asap
sigh. ANYWAYS enough angst — eventually, phoenix shows maya some of his earliest and messiest sketchbooks. maya points at one of his anatomy drawings and jokes “this guy would look so good in a [insert piece of clothing]” and if phoenix will let her, she’ll definitely take one of his sketchbooks just to own something that’s his
relationship stage: she definitely steals his sweaters and wears them like an oversized shirt dress. one time blaze jokes about phoenix and maya starting to look like each other and kaidan says “well you are what you eat”
i have this scenario in my head where maya tries to compliment phoenix and tells him he has beautiful eyes and phoenix just ruins the moment like “you’re flattering yourself. we have the same blue eyes” and it annoys her because she was being sincere but he’s not wrong 😭
maya’s not the best at love because she grew up thinking love hurts until phoenix turned out being her safe place. she’s still learning to not be afraid to be vulnerable but she tries her best to show him that the person he chooses this time also chooses him <3
#the way i held these in for like a year. i feel free#nikka answers#oc: maya quimby#phoenix x maya#brotp: kaidan x maya#brotp: blaze x maya

Iwaizumi x poc
Warnings: locker room smex, agressesive, light degradation
Can ya'll tell I don't know shit about volleyball rules. Can ya also tell I ain't finished Haikyuu so I'm writing for people I don't even know lmao.
"Damn it!" Iwaizumi cursed as he missed the spike once again making you sigh, he was never in good spirits after a bad game. The score was 3-10 and you could almost taste the hostility in the air. "Aw, man! I really overstepped out there!" You heard a 1st year on the other team groan as he drinks water on the sidelines. You smile warmly, "Don't worry about it, you did great!" You give a big thumbs up making the boy look at you confused but he returned the enthusiasm anyway. Facing back on the court you jump at the piercing look your boyfriend was giving you.
You roll your eyes and signal for him to pay attention to the game. He knew that no matter who a person was, you weren't one to be mean. "Y/N-chan!" Oikawa called out to you, "Watch this!" Oikawa takes a step back before serving the ball only to slip and hit Iwazumi in the back of the head effectively giving the ball to the other team. You cover your mouth to hide your laughter but it was no use as Iwazumi slowly turned to look at you with a menacing glare. You quickly face away from him pretending as if you were checking your edges.
In the end, you guys lost which didn't blow over with your boyfriend so you decided to give him space. As the other team got on their bus to leave, the boy you had cheered on ran up to you and bowed deeply, thanking you for your kind words. "Oh don't worry about it dude, just showing my sportsmanship!" He laughs before running onto his bus as his teammates call him a simp. Later in the locker room, you find yourself folding your boyfriend's jersey. "Y/N-chan!" Oikawa calls out making you smile and wave at him before returning to your task. "What is it hon." you respond placing the clothes into the locker. "I was thinking, Iwa-chan was looking really scary today." Oikawa shivered.
"You know how passionate he is Kawa, just give him some space and you'll be fine." you reassure him just as Iwaizumi walks into the locker room. The locker room was eerily quiet so it wasn't hard for you to hear the sound of footsteps getting closer. "Hmmm your still here." Iwaizumi mumbles acknowledging Oikawa's presence but focusing mainly on you.
You glance at Iwazumi and nod softly as to not agitate him any further than he already was. "You know I gotta wait for you babe." you chuckle as you feel wet hands wrap around your exposed waist. "Eww your wet!" Oikawa makes fake gagging noises, "And that's my cue!" he says leaving the locker room with a small wave.
You chuckle, "Babe, come on, get your cold hands-off they tickle-" "Shut up."
You jump as you're slammed into the locker quickly latching onto the shelves in front of you. "Babe-" you feel Iwazumi's fingers force their way into your mouth and the rough pads of his fingers press down on your tongue. Iwaizumi's hands come up to cup your butt before roughly pulling down your pants. "Not in here babe it's not professional!" Iwaizumi scoffs, "You mean how you were professionally flirting with that bastard on the other team!?"
You squeak as Iwaizumi pushes your back down making your butt poke out. "I wasn't-" Iwaizumi slaps your ass before griping it harshly in his hand. "You let him look at what's mine Y/N. I bet if he asked, you'd let him even touch wouldn't you!?" You shook your head flinching as Iwaizumi rubs rough circles into your clit sending tremors of pleasure throughout your body. "Your body still knows who it belongs to though." Iwaizumi responded smugly, collecting your fluids with his fingers, bringing them up to you for you to lick off.
Iwaizumi goes to your ear and whispers harshly with his teeth grinding together. "I'm not in the mood for your excuses right now Y/N so do me a favor and keep your mouth shut."
Getting on his knees, he spreads your ass apart roughly moaning at the sight of your wet pussy. "Don't make a sound." is all you hear before Iwaizumi sucks gently on your folds. You sigh, swishing your hips more into Iwaizumi's face making him growl and slap your ass. "Stop moving." You halt your hips and try to stop yourself from reacting as you grip the metal locker shelves in front of you. The way Iwaizumi's tongue delved deeper inside of your velvet walls, gently massaging your g-spot, was sending you to cloud nine with pleasure.
After a while, he pulls away out of breath with your juices shining on his chin as his angry eyes glared at you. He stands up caressing your lower back before delivering a hard slap to your ass as he pushes his shorts below his crotch making his hard member flip out slapping against his stomach. Grabbing the back of your shirt, Iwaizumi raises you slamming the locker door closed and pressing you back against the locker. "Hey, you don't have to be so rough!" you complain as you feel the cool metal searing your fae.
Iwaizumi doesn't respond as he coats his dick with your fluids before pushing the tip slightly in. "I want you.." Iwaizumi trails off as he holds your hip in place going deep in thought. He watches with hawk-like concentration, the small sheen of sweat that accumulated on your back. He contemplated if he wanted to carry you out of the gym or allow you the ability to walk. "Every time, I fuck into your cunt, I want you to tell me who you belong to." You glance back behind you but before you could respond in question, you are filled to the brim with his cock.
You whine loudly as your cunt was abused but this was not an adequate response for Iwaizumi as he bends over you, taking hold of your neck gripping it securely. "Who do you belong to?" he asks accentuating each word with a thrust. You attempt to babble out a sentence unsuccessfully, "I -fuck- I.. Slow down, -crap!" Iwaizumi grips your neck harder effectively cutting off your air circulation. "I said, who. do. you. belong. to. slut!" You whine as your cunt is forced to spread wider with each thrust to accommodate how his cock thickened as it got closer to the base.
Giving up on getting an appropriate response, Iwaizumi stands up fully keeping your bent over with a firm hand on your lower back as he fucks into you. He throws his head back as he rubs his exposed abs with his other hand. "Oh yeah let me hear you." You stomped your right leg rapidly as Iwaizumi opened you up with his cock. "This is what happens when you want to be an attention whore right Y/N?" You shook your head moaning so loudly that you could hear it echoing back to you as the sound bounced off the walls. Your ass started to burn as you received a multitude of slaps from Iwaizumi's slender hand. "Could that fucking twink fuck you like this Y/N?" "N-No." you cried out weakly
Iwaizumi hummed with mock pity, "No? Are you sure?" Iwaizumi raised his leg by positions his foot on a smaller open locker next to you. "I don't think you understand my question. Who is the only person that can make you feel like this?" Iwaizumi wraps a hand around you rubbing circles into your clit making you come closer to your impending orgasm. "Only you Iwai! Fuuck~ only you." your eyes roll to the back of your head as your vision is clouded with white.
"Do you want me to come in you, think you deserve it?" in your haze, you nod your head uttering silent pleas. "You gotta say thank you when I cum okay baby?" You moan as Iwaizumi speeds up his thrusts putting his foot down to get a better grip on the floor as he practically fucks you into the foundation of the locker. "I'm cumming, and you better take it all baby!" he growls griping your ass cheeks so hard there were sure to be bruises left behind.
Iwaizumi finally cums in you after a final thrust, shoving you flush against the locker, making sure you were stuffed. You softly cried out dazed as Iwai gently rocked into you riding out his aftershocks of pleasure.
He helps you pull your pants back up and softly adjusts your hair to show some semblance of order. "Now what did you learn?" You lazily smirk, "That I should talk to the other team more." Iwaizumi sighed but you don't miss the small smile that showed on his face.

HIS POV - CHAPTER 25
I am snug as a bug with alcohol and blanket. I dont think this is supposed to be a sad POV but...
Ah shit
Theres like. Immediately a lot to unpack. Jesus
Confirmed from birth that this was an issue. Maybe obvious but I couldn't tell if this was something that showed up in his childhood one day, or if it was from birth.
I'm Assuming this is after the surgery. And so that would explain the pain, the out of breath, the Everything Still Hurting So Bad. For a moment I was very confused.
-> I am super curious about the 'never once thought that what I did was wrong' since he constantly describes these as evil things and awful things to do. But if you describe your actions like that, would you not believe that they were wrong? Though I guess in this specific case he means he understands that according to the ideology of others, his actions of killing the corrupt would be seen as 'evil' and 'wrong', whereas he views it as.... i'm assuming necessary.
I think its still fine for me to hc some self harm issues with this, though. Him not sharing the 'this is wrong' belief doesnt mean that he can't be upset over knowing his mother or brother would be severely upset about what hes doing.
Maybe? Idk i want gilbrrt having random moments where he has relapses of his human heart and the weight of his sins crashes upon him in private meltdowns that he forces himself to hide by the time the morning light hits again
-> 'refusing to believe in love' ok mr 'ill write books with the person I love in mind'. Mr 'i'm going to keep an eye on who i love'. Mr 'hearing about this person keeps me going'. Mr 'ive learned to kill with my hands but also to craft my love for her'.
But i do like the worry there. He really does just want reassurances.
-> bet he really just never believed anyone could love someone like him. The "really? Really..." hits really hard
-> "for the first time in my life, I actually feel guilty" [over the prank] .... ['prank']
I just like these details.
Him taking pride in the work on Healing people rather than being known as a nation of killing....damn
-> "and honestly, being alive makes my plan a little more difficult, but--- Whatever. I'm happy, and you look happy, so what does it matter? I decided that since I was a villain, I could act like one, and just give myself over to the things I was feeling, even if only for one day"
Oooooh my god you let it slip that youre bad at the mental mindset of a villain once again. I feel like a 100% bad guy would RELISH in the feelings he wants to experience without even thinking of it like this... you're 85% villain babey.
-> "i'd set things up that way so that she could return to Rhodolite at any time, but I did not need to worry about that anymore"
Amazing. Everything in his plan even had her being able to safely go back home and live without him. She'd prob go home thinking he was still alive and that he was a weird dude that was facinated with her for a few weeks and that was that. My god dude. He was fine with just Some happiness with her before he died, even if she was wary and worried the whole time.
-> even though he still very much wants to destroy the cincept of an imperial family, he's now undecided on if he wants to die then or not. Amazing. This isnt pussy power at work here since they havent banged, he's just finding more hope in life since the person he loved for so long loves him back.
-> interesting details
-> also that blurb about how she had been raised explains SOOOOO much of why she is naive at times, because she genuinely hadn't been faced with too much issues as she was raised. Now my complaints about her seem more null and void with this.
WAILS
There we gooo, validation for the "hes testing her i think" comments i had scattered in these notes. I guess its obvious but it feels nice to have confirmation from the game.
Throws my phone so i dont get tears on it
"It felt like I was the one being conquered" AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
GILBERT ROUTE SPOILERS POST - HIS POV - ROMANTIC
Like the other notes (here), I am continuing my thoughts/notes on Gilbert's route. This post will focus on the His Povs for specifically the romantic end, since I've already done that ending.
I'll be reblogging this post each chapter or so with personal thoughts and general screaming under a cut. I'll be having it in a format with the chapter numbered, and then a cut directly after where I'll be yelling. I already know some major spoilers with gilberts route, so if you have not finished his route yet, be wary.
I'll be using the tags 'Scum Simps' and 'scum plays gil route' for those of you who want to filter it out. Thank u!

You've Got Moves
Masterlist
Part 2
Gender: Female
Pairing: Peter Parker x reader
Warning: None
Summary- [Y/N] asks Peter to do some TikTok dances with her.
Bonus: Clueless Peter. FLUFFF. Also guy best friends are the best best friends to have lol
If you need a description for Asher, just think whatever your idea of a really hot guy is lol.
A/N- this is a repost because the first one was blocked from tags due to tiktok being weird about links😬
---------------------------------------
"Oh my gosh bitch, just ask him."
Your best friend Asher glared at you with pure impatience in his eyes. You'd been going on about this in every gym class for literal weeks.
"Oh my God, doesn't that guy over there have such a classic 'tiktok guy' face?"
"Ooh, look he's flexible! He's probably a really good dancer too."
"You think he'd do a tiktok with me? Nah, that's dumb."
"I bet he's a tiktoker and I just haven't found his page yet."
It drove him crazy. He didn't know whether you had a crush on this guy or if you really were just that obsessed with tiktok to the point where you were finding random people who looked good to do them with, but at this point he didn't care. He just really wanted to stop having conversations every day that ended with him staring at some guy and wondering if he could throw it back.
You watched the boy in question occasionally. You'd practically studied his physique, his face, his little ticks. Everything. But you didn't even know his name. All you knew was:
You definitely wanted to do a tiktok with him.
"Nah, Ash. He's probably gonna think I'm weird. I mean, who just goes up to someone and says 'yo you wanna do a tiktok with me?"
Asher facepalmed and groaned. "Literally anybody that wants to do a tiktok with someone else, [Y/N]." He rolled his eyes with a chuckle as he ruffled your hair with his hand. "C'mon, stop being a wimp and go ask the guy. Cuz if you don't, and I have to keep hearing you going on about his 'classic tiktok boy look', I'm seriously gonna jump off a cliff."
"Fuck you," you snickered with a smile.
Asher gave you a smirk. "You wish."
"Ewww," you groaned. Rolling your eyes, you looked back to the boy you'd been thinking about. He was sitting with his friend on the other side of the gym. You bit your lip anxiously. "Nah, I'm not gonna do it." You looked again. "Okay I'm gonna do it." He was just sitting there minding his own business. "Uh-uh. Nope. Not gonna do it."
"Oh my God..." Asher shook his head. "Fucking lost cause- HEY YO PETER!," he yelled to the other side of the gym, waving his hand wildly and signaling a 'come here' motion when the brown haired boy looked towards him.
Gasping, you turned around and slapped Asher's arm harshly.
"What was that for?!," he asked, rubbing the spot lightly.
"You knew his name?!," you hissed. "You knew his name this whole time and you never told me?!"
He simply smirked in return. "You never asked," he said, earning a middle finger from you.
"You suck," you scolded.
"You swallow," he shot back with a smirk.
Looking back, it made sense that Asher would know his name. After all, he was the social butterfly of social butterflies. You were sure that the only way you had caught a friend like him was because you were already his best friend before he hit puberty. While with others it causes acne and insecurity, it made Asher a literal supermodel (along with a bit of acne, I mean c'mon it's high school). And the fact that he was athletic, being on both the basketball team and the tennis team didn't hurt either. He hung with practically every clique in school, dragging you along wherever he went, though he preferred to hang with the popular crowd the most.
You both looked back to where Peter sat to see that he hadn't moved yet. He was halfway standing up but seemed to be caught up in a deep, frantic, borderline-panicking conversation with his friend.
Asher cocked his head to the side. "Aw, I think he's shy," he snickered. "You got yourself a little shy tiktoker." He shook his head slightly and as he continued to laugh. "Hang on, I'll go get him."
"Just don't say anything weird," you said, pushing him away to go fight your battle.
You drew in a long breath as you watched them converse and you waved when you saw Peter's eyes following Asher's point in your direction.
Knowing your best friend he was probably saying something super embarrassing that you'd have to explain away later, that is, if Peter walked over there in the first place.
"You know he really likes you, right?"
You swung around and looked to the bleacher seats on your right to see a curly haired girl with a book in her hands staring at you with the most unamused face you've ever seen in your life.
"Who?," you asked, extremely confused as to why this girl who never talked to you was talking to you. "Trust me, Asher and I have already been down that road. We're good where we are."
"Not him. Parker," she said tilting her head in Peter's direction. "He stares at you alot. It's pretty weird if you ask me. But then again, you stare at him alot too," she noted rather blatantly. "You guys could probably work. You're both dorks." She smirked, satisfied with her observations and went back to her book as if nothing happened.
"I don't like him," you mumbled back. "I don't even know him."
She didn't raise her eyes from her book as she sighed loudly. "Well then why're you so obsessed with doing a video with him because he has a 'classic tiktok boy look' when you've got Asher -who arguably has more of a 'classic tiktok boy' look than Parker- right next to you, who would probably be more than willing to do some lame dance with you being that he's your best friend?," she asked (more accused than asked).
"Oookay, whatever...," you mumbled, figuring you didn't need to explain yourself to someone you didn't know, turning back to where you could see Asher walking back to you, Peter and his friend close behind. When they finally reached you, Asher put a hand on both you and Peter's shoulders with a smug grin on his face.
"Okay. [Y/N], meet Peter. Peter, meet my dear friend [Y/N]."
You plastered a smile on your face and waved, to which Peter nervously smiled and waved back. He shared a quick look with his friend and then spoke up. "So, uh, can I help you or something?," he asked, snapping you from your thoughts.
"Hmm?," you hummed.
"It's just that, I-i don't.. really know why I'm over here.
"You threw your hand over to the left of you, expecting to hit Asher in the chest. "Ugh, Ash you didn't even te-" You turned your head when you felt nothing but air. "Ash?"
"Hey [Y/N]!"
You turned your head towards his voice and saw that Asher had moved to sit next to the girl who spoke to you before.
"We should really read this book Michelle's reading together. It's called 'The Slaughterhouse Five'!"
You rolled your eyes. Asher hardly even read books unless they were required. Dumb flirter.
You tilted your head toward this "Michelle" girl, whose head was stuck in a book as she actively ignored Asher sitting next to her. You chuckled, mouthing a quick 'good luck' to your friend before turning back to the timid boy who was watching you expectantly.
Shaking out the anxiety in your head, you finally spoke to him. "Uh, I have this thing that I'm trying to do and I know you don't know me and I don't know you and we've never really talked at all and this is kinda weird, but I kinda think that you'd be awesome for it," you rambled, continuing when Peter nodded. "So would you maybe wanna do it with me?"
"Well, what is it exactly?," he asked.
You shrugged. "Just some tiktoks," you said. "I mean, it's totally fine if you don't wanna-"
"Um, sure. But question, and this is probably gonna sound really lame but," he started. He blushed as he looked down at his feet. "What is a tiktok?"
You slapped your hand over your mouth, trying to hide a laugh. You looked to Peter's friend who was still standing there beside him. "I-is he serious?"
His friend laughed too, nodding his head. He patted Peter (whose face was now beet red) on the back and whispered into his ear. Peter's face lit up. "Oh! Gotcha. Thanks, Ned."
"So will you?," you asked.
He scratched his head. "Well sure, but full warning. I'm not much of a dancer."
Michelle looked up from her book once again. "Shut up, loser. You pick up combinations faster than anyone I know."
Your face brightened. "I knew it!" You grabbed his arm and pulled him to the closest wall. "Okay so we'll just start off easy, alright?" Peter nodded in response. "Ummm, let's do this one."
Peter watched it about three times and handed your phone back to you, to which you gave it to Ned so that he could record it.
"Uh, we go right first, right?," Peter asked, going over the entire dance in his mind as he stood beside you while you checked with Ned to see if the shot was good.
"Yeah," you said, smiling as you got a thumbs-up from Ned. "Alright let's do this."
Peter would be lying if he said he had any idea what he was doing. Technically, he knew the dance. It wasn't hard at all and only took him watching it two times to get the hang of it.
But what was he really doing??? First, some really cool guy with the best haircut and chiseled jaw he's even seen who he never thought would be talking to him ever just walks up to him and Ned and practically demands (in a really cool, nonchalant, and non-aggressive way) that he goes to the other side of the gym to the girl that he's been secretly (well not so secret by the way Peter crushes) crushing on without giving him a clear reason. Then he gets there to find out that this totally hot girl picked him out of everyone in the entire gym to do dances with and he actually manages to suck up his nervousness enough to agree??
In a word, wild.
"Okay, that was pretty good," you said as you watched the video. Peter didn't know why, but he could feel a 'but' coming.
You gave a small smile. "But-"
Ah. There it was.
"Look dude," you sighed before pointing at his face. "You are, like really cute. You gotta own that and put it to use, man!"
Peter's eyes went wide and immediately he looked to Ned, who was also freaking out behind you.
You called him cute.
He liked you and you just called him cute.
You were one of the most popular girls in school, he liked you, and you just called him cute.
You continued. "You gotta put some false confidence on it! Bite your lip or something. Get into the music, man."
Peter's face was the reddest it'd ever been and you were sure that he was probably never used to getting a compliment by the way he was acting.
"U-uh, um. Wowww, heh, uh thanks," he mumbled, not really sure how to respond. His voice was wavering and he looked anywhere but you. "So, uh, you want to r-run it again?"
But of course, like all good things, it came it an end.
The gym coach came out clapping his hands together, demanding everyone's attention. "Okay everybody time for drills!"
You sighed. "Guess I'll just have to go with the first one. Thanks anyway, Peter," you said with a smile. "You've got some moves."
Once you turned away, immediately your face fell.That sucked.
You walked back to where Asher was getting up from his where he sat with MJ, and to your surprise, they were actually having conversation.
He waved and tilted his head to Peter in question. You shrugged in response, giving a 'kinda' motion with your hand.
"Hey [Y/N]!"
You turned back around and saw Peter with a cute and bashful smile on his face. "What up?"
"I-i was....I was wondering if m-maybe you'd...like to, um, maybe do this again tomorrow?"
On the insides, you were totally freaking out. This was great. You thought you'd scared him away but he wanted to do it again. "Yeah, totally! We can go to my house after school and-"
"I can't right after school," he rushed. "How about 6?"
"Sure. That's fine. 6 it is. I, uh, I need your number so I can send you my address." You whipped out your phone and gave it to him so that he could put his number in. Before sending your address, you paused. "You're not some psycho killer, are you, Peter?"
He laughed. "Nah, you've got nothing to worry about from me."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~that afternoon~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
KingAsh👑😎: he there yet?
---
Your head popped up from your phone when you heard the doorbell ring. You sent a quick text to Asher and ran downstairs to open the door for Peter.
"Uh, hey!," he said with a smile. "Sorry for being so late."
"Hey Peter," you greeted. You paused. "Um, mind if I call you Pete?"
He blushed, scratching his head. "Nah I don't mind. I get that alot," he said, stepping into your home.
"M'kay, I got some pizza in my room if we end up getting hungry and ahh, let's go up," you said, leading Peter to your room.
Peter looked around and noticed how quiet it was. "Where are your parents?," he asked.
"Well that's a million dollar question," you chuckled. "I live with my uncle."
"Oh," Peter hummed. "I live with my aunt." He announced, a bit too strangely happily.
"So, it's a Friday evening," you said, shifting topics. "We've got all the time in the world! So let's get it! I'll teach you everything..."
What you didn't know was that Peter spent almost all of his time on patrol scrolling through all the popular trends of tiktok and even finding your page and practically obsessing over it for hours. He'd studied and prepared and he was determined to impress you. And hopefully, if everything went according to his plan, you'd think he was more than cute by the end of the day.
Thank you for loving me/S.M
"Baby, time to get up hon, you've got work in an hour," Shawn whispered in my ear, peppering kisses from my brow down to my chin. His calloused fingers- from his favourite hobby- the guitar- running up and down my arms.
"Mmm, morning," I smiled leaning up to meet his soft kiss.
"Is that coffee I smell?" I asked, sitting up slowly, pulling my (Shawn's) favourite over-sized sweater off the arm chair at the side of the bed and standing up only to be pulled into my favourite spot in the world, Shawn's warm embrace.
"Do you really think I'd be so silly as to wake you without the coffee pot at the ready?" he laughed, kissing my temple again, before taking my hand and leading me down the hallway and into the kitchen.
Both Shawn and I worked for the City of Toronto Fire Department, me as a recently qualified paramedic, and Shawn as a firefighter and paramedic. It had been a tough few months for me, the job was demanding and taxing, but I loved it, and I had Shawn and all my work mates to help guide me.
"Sit," he pointed to the barstool where a cup of coffee in my favourite mug and omelette was waiting.
"Ahhh I love you!" I groaned, flopping down in the chair, shovelling a piece of the fragrant food into my mouth.
"I take it it meets your expectations," he laughed, coming to sit next to me.
"Exceeds!" I mumbled around the next mouthful.
Am hour later and Shawn had dropped me at my station, before headed off across town again to his station.
As I made my way into the station the familiar sounds of saws, engines and various other equipment- once so threatening now seemed to welcome me home.
"Hey El." my work partner and paramedic in charge Jo called, coming to meet me at the locker room door.
"Morning, how are Eli and Felix today?" I asked referring to her two little boys.
"They're okay. Eli had a meltdown before school this morning at having to get out of bed, but once I reminded him that Mummy can't go to work and save people if he doesn't get up and go to school all was well. I swear if the kid doesn't become a firefighter or a paramedic himself one day I'll walk to the moon!" she laughed.
"Aw, he's so sweet, it's so cute how you're his idol, speaking of don't we have that school group coming today?"
"We were supposed to, but due to budget cuts'" she rolled her eyes "the department is no longer able to fund it, apparently it's too expensive and labour intensive to have people out of action."
I sighed," How are we supposed to encourage the next generation of they can't see it for themselves. I mean I became a paramedic because my school had a field trip to a firehouse."
"You're preaching to the choir here girl, you're preaching to the choir." she laughed, turning and walking out. I went about putting my stuff away before heading to the kitchen/common room where we all spent our time inbetween calls.
The day turned out to be a slow one and by eleven o'clock I was doing laundry- (only having been called out once) when Mo one of the longest serving fire fighters and overall cool dude appeared by the door.
"You've got a visitor El, there's someone waiting for you it on the apparatus floor."
"Thanks Mo, " I smiled, putting the clothes I had been folding down and heading out the door.
When I got to the apparatus floor, I was slightly shocked. There was Shawn, leaning casually against a Pilar waiting for me a brown bag in one hand- a bunch of sunflowers (my favourite) in the other.
"Shawn... What are you doing here?" I asked, still stunned.
He beamed running and picking me up.
"I had to come speak to chief Hachette about an arson case so I thought I'd surprise my girl. Do you have time for lunch?" he asked just as Jo walked out, stopping in her tracks. She looked so surprised I thought she was going to faint for a minute.
"And who's this?" she asked with a smile, coming over to stand in front of us where Shawn was still holding me.
"Jo meet Shawn." As soon as I said it I knew it was a mistake. A mischievous grin came over her face and I suddenly felt sick at all the intimate details I'd shared with her about our relationship on long nightshifts-mostly under duress, but still.
"Right so we're going to have lunch before we get another call," I spoke quickly, tugging at Shawn's arm to get him to walk before Jo had an opportunity to embarrass me.
"She seems nice," Shawn commented as we found a quiet spot to sit in the grass behind the firehouse.
"She is," I agreed as he handed me a turkey and Brie sandwich from my favourite deli downtown.
Half an hour later and lunch was done all too soon, duty unfortunately calling for Shawn leaving me alone to face the scrutiny of Jo.
"Girrlll, OMG, he's fiinnnee El. I hope you've locked him down cause I want me some of that," she spoke a million miles a minute running to catch up with me a la I made my way back into the common room and through to the laundry to finish folding the clothes from earlier.
"Well, speaking of," I dug around in my breast pocket, pulling out the engagement ring Shawn had proposed with over the weekend on a mini getaway to the Hamptons.
The scream that left Jo's mouth was louder than expected and sent the whole house into a frenzy. Mo and several of the other firefighters including Tiny and Bug to come running.
When they realised there was no actual issue they turned around grumbling about how we'd pulled then away from the basketball game theyd been placing bets on.
"So when, how, where all the details," she demanded grabbing my arm and jumping up and down. Just the thought of the romantic evening Shawn and I had spent made me giddy again.
However before I got a chance to response the bell went off overhead signalling an incoming call
"Main to 41... Possible GSW, 56th and Main."
I sighed.
It was probably some gang related drug issue again there were plenty of lovely people , but that side of town had a reputation.
"41 responding," I spoke into the radio on my shoulder l before running to the trick, jumping in and flicking the switch to the lights and sirens.
When we got to the scene all was well at first, the cops were already there assuring us it was safe to enter, however just as we were about to leave having treated a minor self inflicted wound a man brandishing a gun leapt from a concealed closet.
"Give me all the drugs you have b*TCH." He yelled before either Jo or I could take in what was happening.
"You know we can't do that sir," Jo spoke calmly. Moving to try to assess the man, who's head was bleeding heavily.
"I said give me the f*cking drugs b*TCH ."
He yelled again, storming towards me. The next few seconds were a blur, I heard a shots, there was immense pain in my abdomen and leg and then I crumpled to the floor, whacking my head in the process.
"El, El. Omg, stay with me." Jo panicked.
"41 to main we have an officer down, urgent assistance required for a GSW, EMS required now!" she shouted down her radio.
"Hurts," I gasped as the initial shock wore off and the pain hit, everything seemed to ache, my leg, my ribs, my head. The room was spinning and I was having trouble breathing no longer able to keep track of the flurry of activity.
Somewhere in the chaos,I'm not sure how long after the incident I heard his voice, Shawn's voice and at first I thought I was dreaming, but I managed to open my eyes and there he was, looking down at with with so much fear.
"It's alright baby, I'm here now, we're going to fix it up, you'll be just fine. Can you tell me where it hurts?" he asked.
I went to move, instinctively seeking his comfort, but he stopped me, and I instantly wanted to cry, more than I already was.
"You have to stay still Princess."
I let out a loud groan as he placed an oxygen mask over my face.
"El? Can you hear me?" I grunted, the effort of actually forming words seeming too hard right then. I could feel hands all over me, and as much as I just wanted to be left alone, I also knew , they were trying to help me.
"It hurts," I cried again.
"I know it does honey, but you're going to be okay. I'm here, and so is Connor and Jo, and we'll look after you, and then when we've got you all comfy we'll take you to get all fixed up, how does that sound?"
"Okay, lets get her onto the bed, and then we can assess her from there," Connor suggested, appearing by my side, with a back board and neck collar that Jo had brought over.
"Okay, we're going to roll you onto the board El just let us do all the work okay?" Shawn said.
I let out a serious of screams as they rolled me, gripping Shawn's gloved hand like my life depended on it.
"We'll get you sorted yeah?" Shawn tried to reassure me as they strapped me onto the bed so I was safe, and then starting to push the gurney out the door and towards the entrance of the ambulance which was no more than ten metres away.
"Shawn ," I whispered, tears falling down my face, mixing with the blood which I could feel was congelling on my face.
When we were in the ambulance Shawn and Jo attached me to the hundreds of leads which I was so used to attaching to others while I lay there helplessly.
"I've started some morphine," Jo patted my arm gently as Shawn pulled a blanket over my body as I drifted off into fairy land.
Ten minutes later and we were pulling into the emergency bay.
The automatic doors opened, where we were met with a hoard of staff, ready to assist, the first person being Brian, Shawn and my mutual friend and colleague.
The look of horror on his face when he saw that it was me on the gurney was unsettling.
"She's a priority one, bed four, resus," he directed Shawn, following behind. " What do we know?" He asked, starting to attach monitors and leads to me all over again.
"GSW on scene, while responding to an incident on the other side of town. Wound to leg and abdo, possible broken ribs and concussion." Shawn reeled off.
I wasn't aware that they'd even assessed me, clearly I'd lost consciousness at some point and I wasn't even aware of it.
I lay there mulling over this lapse in memory, letting the chaos wash over me like a wave.
The last thing I was aware of was Brian shouting orders at the floods of nurses, and Shawn standing helplessly in the corner, red-faced from crying, before everything went black.
"Ah, can you turn the lights off!" I groaned as I came to again, reaching to rip off whatever annoying piece of wiring was sitting over my face "My head hurts," I added as a dull.ache consumed my thoughts as Shawn's worried face came into view, his frame helping to block out the blinding light as he bent over the bed.
"Oh thank God I was so worried," he cried kissing me with so much force I forgot to breathe, making the monitor go crazy for a second. "How are you feeling he asked, stopping me from pulling at the thing on my face which turned out to be oxygen tubing
"What happened?" I asked,. I remembered the main.events but the rest was fuzzy, whether from my injuries or from the drugs I had no doubt been plied with I wasn't sure
"You were shot while on-call, drug exchange gone bad, you scared me so bad baby," he whispered, brushing hair out if my face as Brian made his way into the room clearing his throat to announce himself.
"Hi El, it's good to see you awake, how are you feeling?" He asked coming to check a few things on the monitors before flipping my chart that sat at the end of the bed open.
"So as you know you had two gun shot wounds, one to your left let and one to the abdomen, luckily for you they were both clean shots and we didn't need to do anything other than clean and irrigate the areas and stitch you up. You did however manage to fracture three ribs when you fell as well as sustaining a sizable concussion.
"So what does that mean work wise?" I asked. Shawn must have sensed my nerves, because he was sure to keep a hand intertwined with my, the other tracing soft patterns up and down my arm.
"We'll unfortunately, during the fall you fractured your tibia, which has left you in a cast, and pretty well imibilised, I'm sorry to say you'll be relying on this big guy-" he slapped Shawn in the back, "for the next week at least while everything settles.
You'll be in a cast for at least six weeks and off work from a minimum of two weeks with rehab worked in. Rest up El, give me a yell if ya need anything," he spoke to Shawn as he left the room.
"I'll lose my job," I cried, the thought of not being able to do what I loved terrified me.
"No you won't Brian said you'll be sore for a bit and need to rest, not that you'd lose your job, besides now you'll have a real reason to boss me around, I'll be your slave". He laughed covering .me with a blanket and lifting my bung leg to rest it in a pillow.
Besides when you're well enough there are some people who'd like to see you.
"Get some rest and we'll work it all out when you wake up.
True to his word, he helped me with everything, toileting, showering (which proved to be a challenge with the cast), dressing, getting up and down stairs, making breakfast, lunch and dinner, and forcing me to take pain medication when I was too stubborn to admit I needed it.
By the end of the first week though, I was miseeable,.not used to doing nothing but sitting in my behind.
"You my dear, need to get a coat on we're going out!" he announced, coming over with said coat and helping me to stuff my arms in.
"Where are we going?" I asked.
"SSH, it's a secret," he grinned, before carrying me to the car and making sure I was all buckled up.
Half an hour later and we were pulling up to the firehouse, where a few of the guys were sat outside playing cards as we made our way (me hobbling haphazardly on crutches) into the firehouse
"Hero in the house!" Mo called out and they all came running.
"I'm so glad you're okay. You scared me girl." Jo sniffled coming to hug me.
"Ouch still a little sore." I laughed leaning into Shawn for support as she blubbered all over me.
"Well sore is better than the alternative.
If it weren't for this one," she pointed to Shawn "you'd be dead."
"You've got yourself a keeper,"Mo added with a smile.
"Well if Mo approves it must be true." I agreed. "I think I'll keep you." I added, causing everyone to laugh.
"Thank you," I whispered to Shawn when the others were out of ear shot.
"For what?" he asked.
"Just for being you and for loving me," I shrugged, snuggling futher into his embrace, feeling greatful just to be alive, let alone call this wonderful human mine.
PROMPT:
Bruce Wayne & Jason Todd, Jason Todd & Catherine Todd
Warning: implied/referenced child abuse.
Jason Todd makes no attempt to eat his burger or even take a sip from his soda, despite the loud rumbling of his stomach. He clutches the bag tightly, bringing it closer to his chest when he sees Bruce staring, like he's afraid Bruce would take offense and demand his food back.
Bruce Wayne does not understand him. His threadbare clothes do nothing to hide the skin stretched over bones. He can see the outline of the boy's ribs through his red hoodie. He is clearly very hungry and going by the way he can't seem to take his eyes off the bag of fast food or even how he keeps taking lungs full of the aroma wafting from it, like if he breathes deep enough, he will be filled. He would bet his entire fortune that this kid has not had a good meal in weeks, or even months. Even one as unhealthy as greasy fast food.
The child is clearly starving. Yet, he has not made any attempt to help himself.
Bruce does not have any experience with poverty or homelessness. Even at the lowest point of his life, he had access to basic human needs. Still, he knows enough about human behavior to know that Jason's behavior right now is not the norm. When he gives a clearly starving person food, they usually devour it immediately.
There are only a few reasons why he would not want to eat the food he had enthusiastically accepted from Bruce. Either he plans to use the food as payment for his safety, in which case, Bruce needs to start looking into gangs exploiting kids, or he has someone, most likely a younger sibling in his care. Considering the fact that Bruce had caught him trying to jack off the fourth tire of the batmobile, after successfully getting away with the other three, Bruce is not sure what is most likely to be the case.
"You going to turn me in now?" Jason asks him, once Bruce's burger is out of sight.
"I promised you I wouldn't," Bruce tells him as earnestly as he can manage.
It doesn't convince the child at all.
"Yeah, right," he scoffs. "That's what you all say."
"Don't you think it would be counter-productive to have you arrested for trying to survive? I'm trying to make Gotham safe for kids like you, Jason. Not put you in jail. I might take you somewhere safe, so you don't have to keep living on the streets, but--"
"I'm not on the streets," Jason cuts in defensively. The fear and worry in his expression is clear now. "I live with my mom and we're fine. If you're not going to arrest me, then I'll be on my way."
A mom. Bruce can't decide if it's a euphemism for Boss. He has seen some awful things since becoming Batman. He also knows some parents take advantage of their kids and force them into crimes as a way to 'earn their keep'.
Jason is most likely taking the food to this person, if he's not eating it, and Batman needs to separate them if the child is being exploited.
The child doesn't wait for Bruce's response before he starts his trek back to the Narrows.
Making a snap decision, Bruce calls out to him.
"Common, I'll drop you off wherever you want," he says, knowing Jason would never let Batman drop him off at home. The child is too suspicious, and rightfully so.
Jason stops in his tracks, but he makes no attempt to accept Bruce's offer.
"It will be morning before you make it all the way across town," Bruce points out. "That's <i>if</i> you don't get attacked for the food."
With that, Jason agrees to let Bruce give him a ride.
Even though he was quiet for the first couple of minutes, Bruce could see the wheels turning in the boy's head. Jason has a very expressive face that tells Bruce he is gearing up to say something, as he takes in the interior of the batmobile.
Jason doesn't take as long as Bruce thought he would.
"You're probably rich, huh?" Jason observes.
Oh God, Bruce hopes this kid is not about to proposition him.
"Not really." Bruce's answer is terse to discourage further probing.
"So it's true what they say?" Jason continues, either missing Bruce's reluctance to continue with this conversation or ignoring it. "That you're fucking Bruce Wayne for money?"
If Batman didn't have such a tight rein on his microexpressions, he would have choked. "That's not language suitable for a child."
Jason turns in his seat so that Bruce doesn't miss the elaborate eye-roll.
"I guess you've had to pay informants, huh?" Jason asks. "You know, like in the stories, where a dude is rewarded for giving the cops valuable information for solving a crime. You do that?"
"Sometimes." Bruce is invested in where Jason is going with his questioning. "Why? Do you have information to sell?"
"Depends on your going rate," the boy sasses.
"And how much do you want?" Bruce asks.
"I read in the papers that the FBI pay up to a hundred grand," Jason shrugs. "Shouldn't be too much for you to match, seeing as you have a rich boyfriend."
"One hundred thousand dollars?" The only reason Bruce doesn't laugh is because he doesn't want Jason to think he's being made fun of.
That, and the possibility that Jason may be trying to get free from his abuser, by having Batman go after them.
"You really think your information is worth that much?" Bruce asks.
"You tell me, Batman." Jason shrugs again. "It was worth enough to cause a war between Penguin and Scarecrow. Enough to make my dad disappear, not that that's a bad thing."
Bruce doesn't think he's supposed to hear the last part, as Jason mutters it under his breath. But the cowl picks up the words clearly.
A criminal and/or abusive mother and mob affiliated but now absentee father. Bruce is debating calling Social Services.
He's also aware of the war between Penguin and Scarecrow. A few months ago, there were rumors of a collaboration between the two factions to take over Gotham, before accusations of betrayal.
If it wasn't for the lives being lost, Bruce would be grateful for their misunderstanding.
Still, a hundred thousand dollars is a lot of money for someone like Jason, and is most likely to draw the wrong attention.
"I'll give you five thousand," Bruce tells him.
"Out of a hundred? Are you really that cheap?" Jason snorts. "You roll around in a ride like this and can't even pay for information? Okay, I'll do you a favor and take seventy."
"Ten," Bruce counters.
"All you rich assholes like taking advantage of poor people," Jason grumbles angrily. When Bruce doesn't budge, he relents. "Fifty."
"Fifteen."
"Fifty," Jason repeats firmly.
"Alright, twenty five thousand dollars and that's my final offer."
"Deal!" Jason agrees immediately.
Bruce watches him spit on his palm before extending it to Bruce for a handshake.
"Come on," he urges when Bruce makes no attempt to shake his hand. "We gotta shake on it to seal the deal."
In the face of that logical argument, Bruce spits in his own hand before clasping it to Jason's in a handshake.
If Jason believes he has information that can help, then twenty five thousand dollars is not too much to pay someone who clearly needs it. The cash in the batmobile isn't up to the amount, but it should be enough to buy the time he would need to get the rest from the manor.
"Alright." He follows Jason's directions on where to park. "What's this information?"
"Wait here," Jason instructs him, undoing the seat belt. "I'll bring it to you."
Bruce gives Jason a minute head-start before he takes to the rooftops, to trail the young boy.
After a few twists and turns, he comes to a stop in front of a dilapidated building. A woman rushes out and pulls Jason into a hug.
"I've been looking all over for you!" she scolds. "Where were you? Chris said some man took you. Is that true?"
She is rail thin, her threadbare clothes hanging off her body, but she sounds genuinely distressed as she checks him for injuries.
"I'm fine, Mom," Jason says in comfort before shoving the food at her. "Look, I got us food and I found a way to get away from the men looking for dad."
The woman -- Jason's mom -- shoves the food back at him, before pulling him into an apartment with the door barely hanging on a hinge.
It's hard not to notice the woman's limp, or the way Jason supports some of her weight as they go.
Bruce takes a second to process everything.
Judging by the environment and what he's seen and heard, Jason isn't being abused, but he's in even more danger.
Whether he plans to pay off his father's debt with the money or not, Bruce knows he has to get mother and son away from this place before they end up as victims of mob violence. Whether Jason really does have information to sell or not.
With that, Bruce hops down to the street from his perch on the roof.
Despite how mindful he is of the door, the moment his fist to connects with the door, it falls off the hinge holding it in place, exposing Jason and his mother having either a very late dinner or a very early breakfast in their one bedroom apartment.
They both jump at the sight of him, and once realization dawns on them, their reactions are wildly different.
Jason's mom cowers with fear, shrinking into herself while attempting to wrap herself around her son, but Jason won't have it. He is livid.
"What the fuck, Batman!" the child hisses angrily. "I told you to wait for me."
"Jason, stop," his mother pleads, pulling Jason behind her.
The boy is unmoved. His mother's frailness is no match for his strength.
"You broke our door! Why the fuck would you do that?"
Despite his obvious anger, they're both careful not to raise their voices. Bruce imagines that getting a visit from Batman isn't a good thing in this neighborhood.
"Calm down," Bruce growls.
Both mother and son freeze where they stand.
"We didn't do nothing wrong, Batman," the lady tells him in a trembling voice. "If you're looking for my husband, we don't know where he is."
"I'm here for Jason," Bruce tells her, registering her distress just before he turns to Jason. "You were taking too long," he lies. "I wanted to make sure you were fine."
This seems to placate the boy a bit, but not his mother, who demands to know what the hell is going on.
Bruce watches silently as Jason explains his plans to his mother.
Apparently, his plan is to sell the information his father stole from Scarecrow to Batman, in exchange for money that will get them out of Crime Alley.
His mom doesn't look thrilled, but she lets Jason climb into the ceiling to retrieve what her husband had hidden there.
"You won't arrest him when you have what you want, will you?" she asks with a fierce look.
Bruce can't help but admire that about her. Not a lot of people have that look about them when Batman is staring them down.
Must be where Jason gets his spunk.
"Jason is a good boy," she continues. "He did a bad thing, but it was for a good reason. His heart is in the right place, I swear."
"Mrs Todd--" Bruce starts, but she interrupts him.
"Catherine."
"Catherine," he repeats. "I don't plan to arrest your son," he continues as calmly as Batman's voice will let him. "We made a deal and I intend to uphold my end."
"So you're just going to hand Jason twenty-five grand?" Catherine asks suspiciously. "Just like that?"
"Yes," he tells her simply. "But I don't have twenty-five thousand dollars in cash right now. I can give you a thousand tonight, and a safe place for the night. Seeing as I broke your door. Tomorrow, you will get the rest of the money and I will call someone to fix your door."
As he talks, he pulls out the bills from his utility belt and hands it to her.
Of course, he has no plans of letting them return here. But if he has learned anything from being Batman, it's that, sometimes, all some people have left is their pride.
Poor people hate being treated as charity.
Siccing Alfred on her would be more productive. All he has to do is make sure they meet. Dick would probably appreciate having someone young in the manor, too.
"And you swear Jason will be safe?" Catherine stresses, eyes flickering between the money and Bruce's face.
"I swear," he vows solemnly. That much, he can promise.
A few minutes later, Jason returns from the ceiling, an envelope clutched in his hand.
"Jason," Catherine calls softly, pulling him into her arms before he can give Bruce the envelope. "Baby, there's something I have to tell you about…"
Thank you for Loving Me
"Baby, time to get up hon, you've got work in an hour", Shawn whispered in my ear, peppering kisses from my brow down to my chin. His calloused fingers- from his favourite hobby- the guitar- running up and down my arms.
"Mmm, morning," I smiled leaning up to meet his soft kiss.
"Is that coffee I smell?"I asked, sitting up slowly, pulling my (Shawn's) favourite over-sized sweater off the arm chair at the side of the bed and standing up only to be pulled into my favourite spot in the world, Shawn's warm embrace.
"Do you really think I'd be so silly as to wake you without the coffee pot at the ready?" he laughed, kissing my temple again, before taking my hand and leading me down the hallway and into the kitchen.
Both Shawn and I worked for the City of Toronto Fire Department, me as a recently qualified paramedic, and Shawn as a firefighter and paramedic. It had been a tough few months for me, the job was demanding and taxing, but I loved it, and I had Shawn and all my work mates to help guide me.
"Sit," he pointed to the barstool where a cup of coffee in my favourite mug and omelette was waiting.
"Ahhh I love you!" I groaned, flopping down in the chair, shovelling a piece of the fragrant food into my mouth.
"I take it it meets your expectations," he laughed, coming to sit next to me.
"Exceeds!" I mumbled around the next mouthful.
Am hour later and Shawn had dropped me at my station, before headed off across town again to his station.
As I made my way into the station the familiar sounds of saws, engines and various other equipment- once so threatening now seemed to welcome me home.
"Hey El.", my work partner and paramedic in charge Jo called, coming to meet me at the locker room door.
"Morning, how are Eli and Felix today?" I asked referring to her two little boys.
"They're okay. Eli had a meltdown before school this morning at having to get out of bed, but once I reminded him that Mummy can't go to work and save people if he doesn't get up and go to school all was well. I swear if the kid doesn't become a firefighter or a paramedic himself one day I'll walk to the moon!" she laughed.
"Aw, he's so sweet, it's so cute how you're his idol, speaking of don't we have that school group coming today?"
"We were supposed to, but due to budget cuts'" she rolled her eyes "the department is no longer able to fund it, apparently it's too expensive and labour intensive to have people out of action."
I sighed, "How are we supposed to encourage the next generation of they can't see it for themselves. I mean I became a paramedic because my school had a field trip to a firehouse."
"You're preaching to the choir here girl, you're preaching to the choir." she laughed, turning and walking out. I went about putting my stuff away before heading to the kitchen/common room where we all spent our time inbetween calls.
The day turned out to be a slow one and by eleven o'clock I was doing laundry- (only having been called out once) when Mo one of the longest serving fire fighters and overall cool dude appeared by the door.
"You've got a visitor El l, there's someone waiting for you it on the apparatus floor."
"Thanks Mo, " I smiled, putting the clothes I had been folding down and heading out the door.
When I got to the apparatus floor, I was slightly shocked. There was Shawn, leaning casually against a Pilar waiting for me a brown bag in one hand- a bunch of sunflowers (my favourite) in the other.
"Shawn... What are you doing here?"I asked, still stunned.
He beamed running and picking me up.
"I had to come speak to chief Hachette about an arson case so I thought I'd surprise my girl.Do you have time for lunch?" he asked just as Jo walked out, stopping in her tracks. She looked so surprised I thought she was going to faint for a minute.
"And who's this?" she asked with a smile, coming over to stand in front of us where Shawn was still holding me.
"Jo meet Shawn." As soon as I said it I knew it was a mistake. A mischievous grin came over her face and I suddenly felt sick at all the intimate details I'd shared with her about our relationship on long nightshifts-mostly under duress, but still.
"Right so we're going to have lunch before we get another call," I spoke quickly, tugging at Shawn's arm to get him to walk before Jo had an opportunity to embarrass me.
"She seems nice," Shawn commented as we found a quiet spot to sit in the grass behind the firehouse.
"She is." I agreed as he handed me a turkey and Brie sandwich from my favourite deli downtown.
Half an hour later and lunch was done all too soon, duty unfortunately calling for Shawn leaving me alone to face the scrutiny of Jo.
"Girrlll, OMG, he's fiinnnee El. I hope youve locked him down cause I want me some of that." she spoke a million miles a minute running to catch up with me a la I made my way back into the common room and through to the laundry to finish folding the clothes from earlier.
"Well, speaking of... " I dug around in my breast pocket, pulling out the engagement ring Shawn had proposed with over the weekend on a mini getaway to the Hamptons.
The scream that left Jo's mouth was louder than expected and sent the whole house into a frenzy. Mo and several of the other firefighters including Tiny and Bug to come running.
When they realised there was no actual issue they turned around grumbling about how we'd pulled then away from the basketball game theyd been placing bets on.
"So when, how, where all the details," she demanded grabbing my arm and jumping up and down. Just the thought of the romantic evening Shawn and I had spent made me giddy again.
However before I got a chance to response the bell went off overhead signalling an incoming call
"Main to 41... Possible GSW, 56th and Main."
I sighed.
It was probably some gang related drug issue again.there were plenty of lovely people , but that side of town had a reputation.
"41 responding," I spoke into the radio, before flicking the switch to the lights and sirens.
When we got to the scene all was well at first, the cops were already there assuring us it was safe to enter, however just as we were about to leave having treated a minor self inflicted wound a man brandishing a gun leapt from a concealed closet.
"Give me all the drugs you have b*TCH." He yelled before either Jo or I could take in what was happening.
"You know we can't do that sir," Jo spoke calmly. Moving to try to assess the man, who's head was bleeding heavily.
"I said give me the f*cking drugs b*TCH ."
He yelled again, storming towards me. The next few seconds were a blur, I heard a shots, there was immense pain in my abdomen and leg and then I crumpled to the floor, whacking my head in the process.
"El, El. Omg, stay with me." Jo panicked.
"41 to main we have an officer down, urgent assistance required for a GSW, EMS required now!" she shouted down her radio.
"Hurts," I gasped as the initial shock wore off and the pain hit, everything seemed to ache, my leg, my ribs, my head. The room was spinning and I was having trouble breathing no longer able to keep track of the flurry of activity.
Somewhere in the chaos,I'm not sure how long after the incident I heard his voice, Shawn's voice and at first I thought I was dreaming, but I managed to open my eyes and there he was, looking down at with with so much fear.
"It's alright baby, I'm here now, we're going to fix it up, you'll be just fine. Can you tell me where it hurts?" he asked.
I went to move, instinctively seeking his comfort, but he stopped me, and I instantly wanted to cry, more than I already was.
"You have to stay still Princess."
I let out a loud groan as he placed an oxygen mask over my face.
"El? Can you hear me?" I grunted, the effort of actually forming words seeming too hard right then. I could feel hands all over me, and as much as I just wanted to be left alone, I also knew , they were trying to help me.
"It hurts," I cried again.
"I know it does honey, but you're going to be okay. I'm here, and so is Connor and Jo, and we'll look after you, and then when we've got you all comfy we'll take you to get all fixed up, how does that sound?"
"Okay, lets get her onto the bed, and then we can assess her from there," Connor suggested, appearing by my side, with a back board and neck collar that Jo had brought over.
"Okay, we're going to roll you onto the board El just let us do all the work okay?" Shawn said.
I let out a serious of screams as they rolled me, gripping Shawn's gloved hand like my life depended on it.
"We'll get you sorted yeah?" Shawn tried to reassure me as they strapped me onto the bed so I was safe, and then starting to push the gurney out the door and towards the entrance of the ambulance which was no more than ten metres away.
"Shawn ," I whispered, tears falling down my face, mixing with the blood which I could feel was congelling on my face.
When we were in the ambulance Shawn and Jo attached me to the hundreds of leads which I was so used to attaching to others while I lay there helplessly.
"I've started some morphine," Jo patted my arm gently as Shawn pulled a blanket over my body as I drifted off into fairy land.
Ten minutes later and we were pulling into the emergency bay.
The automatic doors opened, where we were met with a hoard of staff, ready to assist, the first person being Brian, Shawn and my mutual friend and colleague.
The look of horror on his face when he saw that it was me on the gurney was unsettling.
"She's a priority one, bed four, resus," he directed Shawn, following behind. " What do we know?" He asked, starting to attach monitors and leads to me all over again.
"GSW on scene, while responding to an incident on the other side of town. Wound to leg and abdo, possible broken ribs and concussion." Shawn reeled off.
I wasn't aware that they'd even assessed me, clearly I'd lost consciousness at some point and I wasn't even aware of it.
I lay there mulling over this lapse in memory, letting the chaos wash over me like a wave.
The last thing I was aware of was Brian shouting orders at the floods of nurses, and Shawn standing helplessly in the corner, red-faced from crying, before everything went black.
"Ah, can you turn the lights off!" I groaned as I came to again, reaching to rip off whatever annoying piece of wiring was sitting over my face "My head hurts," I added as a dull.ache consumed my thoughts as Shawn's worried face came into view, his frame helping to block out the blinding light as he bent over the bed.
"Oh thank God I was so worried," he cried kissing me with so much force I forgot to breathe, making the monitor go crazy for a second. "How are you feeling he asked, stopping me from pulling at the thing on my face which turned out to be oxygen tubing
"What happened?" I asked,. I remembered the main.events but the rest was fuzzy, whether from my injuries or from the drugs I had no doubt been plied with I wasn't sure
"You were shot while on-call, drug exchange gone bad, you scared me so bad baby," he whispered, brushing hair out if my face as Brian made his way into the room clearing his throat to announce himself.
"Hi El, it's good to see you awake, how are you feeling?" He asked coming to check a few things on the monitors before flipping my chart that sat at the end of the bed open.
"So as you know you had two gun shot wounds, one to your left let and one to the abdomen, luckily for you they were both clean shots and we didn't need to do anything other than clean and irrigate the areas and stitch you up. You did however manage to fracture three ribs when you fell as well as sustaining a sizable concussion.
"So what does that mean work wise?" I asked. Shawn must have sensed my nerves, because he was sure to keep a hand intertwined with my, the other tracing soft patterns up and down my arm.
"We'll unfortunately, during the fall you fractured your tibia, which has left you in a cast, and pretty well imibilised, I'm sorry to say you'll be relying on this big guy-" he slapped Shawn in the back, "for the next week at least while everything settles.
You'll be in a cast for at least six weeks and off work from a minimum of two weeks with rehab worked in. Rest up El, give me a yell if ya need anything," he spoke to Shawn as he left the room.
"I'll lose my job," I cried, the thought of not being able to do what I loved terrified me.
"No you won't Brian said you'll be sore for a bit and need to rest, not that you'd lose your job, besides now you'll have a real reason to boss me around, I'll be your slave". He laughed covering .me with a blanket and lifting my bung leg to rest it in a pillow.
Besides when you're well enough there are some people who'd like to see you.
"Get some rest and we'll work it all out when you wake up.
True to his word, he helped me with everything, toileting, showering (which proved to be a challenge with the cast), dressing, getting up and down stairs, making breakfast, lunch and dinner, and forcing me to take pain medication when I was too stubborn to admit I needed it.
By the end of the first week though, I was miseeable,.not used to doing nothing but sitting in my behind.
"You my dear, need to get a coat on we're going out!" he announced, coming over with said coat and helping me to stuff my arms in.
"Where are we going?" I asked.
"SSH, it's a secret," he grinned, before carrying me to the car and making sure I was all buckled up.
Half an hour later and we were pulling up to the firehouse, where a few of the guys were sat outside playing cards as we made our way (me hobbling haphazardly on crutches) into the firehouse
"Hero in the house!" Mo called out and they all came running.
"I'm so glad you're okay. You scared me girl." Jo sniffled coming to hug me.
"Ouch still a little sore." I laughed leaning into Shawn for support as she blubbered all over me.
"Well sore is better than the alternative.
If it weren't for this one," she pointed to Shawn "you'd be dead."
"You've got yourself a keeper,"Mo added with a smile.
"Well if Mo approves it must be true." I agreed. "I think I'll keep you." I added, causing everyone to laugh.
"Thank you," I whispered to Shawn when the others were out of ear shot.
"For what?" he asked.
"Just for being you and for loving me," I shrugged, snuggling futher into his embrace, feeling greatful just to be alive, let alone call this wonderful human mine.
Chapter 4: Something Bad's About To Happen
Everyone was silent, but looked at me with wide eyes.
"I KNEW IT! I knew you had to be something!", the smaller boy yelled, pointing at me.
"Something....?", I asked, sweatdropping.
"You're a girl....?", Kaminari asked surprised.
"Why are you wearing the male uniform?", Midoriya asked.
"Because, I've learned to hate skirts and dresses and frilly, unnecessary things like that.", I explain.
"Well, there's nothing wrong with what you like. If you don't like skirts and dresses, trust me, I don't either, but it's nothing wrong with that.", Jirou said.
I gave her a small smile. "Thanks."
"Well, why did you come dressing up as a guy in the first place...?", Kirishima asked.
I sighed, rubbing behind my neck. “Its...confidential. Let’s just say, I have Daddy Issues.”
I looked at everyone and some of them looked concerned, some of them even looked shocked.
Everyone got up at the sound of the lunch bell and Mina gave me a look as if to tell me, 'we'll talk about this later.'
I started to follow the rest of the girls until I got pulled back by Bakugou.
"Somehow you cease to surprise me so far.", he says with a glare.
"Should I take that as a bad thing?", I ask.
"Damn straight.", he says, letting me go and walks out.
I sighed and left for the cafeteria too.
As I got something from the vending machine, I thought back to everyone's faces.
I didn't mean to make them feel down... What a good way to start the year…
Right about the time I was gonna go see Mina, the alarm went off and panic rang out in the cafeteria.
What now....?
I headed out toward the exit, which led me to be practically drowning in a crowd of panicked teenagers.
It wasn’t long before I found myself partially pinned against a wall and being jerked around.
Right before I was gonna explode on someone's ass for thrashing me, I felt someone grab my arm and pull me hard through the crowd to a less dense area.
"You okay?", a familiar redhead asks.
He blocked me against the wall in a protective gesture, grunting every time someone bumped into him.
"Do you know what's going on?", I asked throughout all the yelling.
"It's just the press! Someone must've gotten in!", he yells.
I nodded. No wonder.
Iida somehow managed to get everyone to calm down and stop moving.
"Its over with....", I say. Kirishima backs away with a smile. "Yeah. Have you eaten yet?"
I shrug. "Just a bit before all the commotion." That made him frown a little. "Well a bit won't do. Gotta eat before training. Let's go.", he says, leading me to the cafeteria.
After the commotion with the press, I started to get a bad feeling...
"Hey, Kirishima....", I say walking behind him.
"Yeah?", he answered, looking back at me.
"What if it was actually a real villain using the press as a cover-up to get in...?"
He rubbed behind his neck. "Nah, I don't think they'd let us walk around if that happened."
"I guess so. I just got this weird feeling something's gonna happen.", I say. "Well don't jinx it", he jokes.
A few days later, we were assigned to go to USJ for a training exercise.
"Line up accordingly to your class seats. Fill them up in an orderly fashion." Iida waved in a weird way.
"Dude, chill.", I say. This class rep role is really serious to him...
He turned to the inside of the bus, much to his disappointment. "No...! It's that type!"
We all looked inside the bus and snickered at his disappointment. The front part of the bus had seats on both sides of it facing each other like two sofas.
I sat next to Kaminari as everyone else followed through.
I tuned in and out as Mina, Tsuyu, Kirishima, and Midoriya started talking about their quirks.
"I generally say what's on my mind, though... Midoriya," Tsuyu announces, making us all look at her.
"Your quirk reminds me of All Might.", she says and he flinches. Huh...now that I think about it...
"Now, hold on Tsu.", Kirishima says. "All Might doesn't get hurt by his quirk."
"Yeah, that's right.", Midoriya says.
"You got a flashy quirk, Midoriya. Mine on the other hand," Kirishima raises his arm and hardens it. "Not so much."
"Aw, don't say that Kiri. It's plenty useful. I like it because it makes you seem unbreakable!", I say with a smile.
He gives me a wide sharp tooth grin. Guess he's over the issue from yesterday.
"Now if you wanna talk flashy,", he points toward Bakugou and Todoroki. "Those guys are the best bet.", he turns to me. "I've yet to see your full quirk, Homura."
I looked out the window. "And it's gonna stay that way."
"Aw, c'mon! I wanna see how you work it.", he muses.
"Yeah!", Kaminari cheers on the side of me.
I shook my head fast. "Nope!"
"Well Bakugou could never be popular, not with that temper of his.", Tsuyu chimes in.
"What the fuck!? I'll kick your ass!", Bakugou yells.
"See?", she says pointing and making me laugh.
"Well, it makes sense. We just met you and we can already tell you got the personality of burned trash filled with sewage.", Kaminari says.
"Oh wow.", I snickered.
"Fuck you! I'm gonna make your life a living hell, you little shit!!", Bakugou yells, scaring Jirou.
"Bakugou, calm down!", I say laughing.
"I'll give you something to laugh at, you Spawn!", he threatens.
We all laughed until the bus came to a stop.
We stopped right in front of the USJ as Aizawa-sensei started to speak.
"This is a different part of training. Rescue.", he looked at all of us. "It's nothing serious compared to real natural disasters, just scenarios of what could happen. Uh, 13 explain."
Uraraka and Midoriya gasp in astonishment. "13....!"
The short astronaut suit came walking up to us. "Hey, you guys! 14, 15, 18, 19....21! Okay! So, welcome USJ!"
"In our super powered society, the use of quirks are heavily restricted and monitored. It may seem that our system is a stable one, but we must never forget that it takes only one wrong move and someone's dead.", he says.
With that, he led us inside.
"Holy crap, this is like an amusement park!", Kirishima exclaimed.
"As you may know, my power is Black Hole. I can suck up anything and it turns into dust.", 13 explains. "Just like your quirks, they do not exist to hurt people."
I grimaced. "Don't worry about it, Sunako.", I hear Tomohiro say, turning my head to see him by my side. “You’ve been quiet for a while.”, I say, making him chuckle.
"With that being said, be careful and have fun!"
Aizawa-sensei looked at us. "Alright, go in there and-"
I shivered. I got a bad feeling....
"Uh...is this part of the practice....?", Kirishima asks looking down, making everyone do the same.
"Villains...!", 13 yelled. I looked down to see multiple portals opening, giving a passageway to let them in.
I saw Aizawa pull out his goggles and put them over his head.
"Aizawa-sensei, you're gonna attack!? What about your quirk limit!?", Midoriya asks.
"A hero always has more than one trick up their sleeve. Huddle up and stay back! 13, protect the kids!", Aizawa yells, putting on his goggles and launches into action.
I looked down at a certain figure who stayed by the purple portal. He had hands all over him and even on his face.
"What's his problem....?", I whispered. "They're here for something. Keep your guard up.", Tomohiro says.
"We, the Villains Alliance, have only come for one person. The symbol of peace.", the blue haired figure said. "I wonder if he'll come if we just....kill these kids..."
"These guys are idiots...", I said.
Aizawa jumped to the villains and fought like they weren't nothing.
"We gotta go!!", Kaminari yelled.
"I'm afraid I cannot allow that."
I got a shiver again as a black purple mist appeared in front of us.
I knew something was gonna happen...
"I am Kurogiri...I apologize for the short notice. We took it upon ourselves to enter UA, the base of heroes."
We all stare up at the mist hearing the voice. "Was Mr. All Might not able to attend...?"
It moved and sighed. "That aside, this is my role.", I looked up to see Kirishima and Bakugou rushing toward the mist and attacked it.
"Bet you didn't expect us to do you in before you got the chance!", Kirishima exclaims.
"To be expected. The hero world's golden eggs."
"Run you two!", 13 shouts as the mist expanded and surrounded us.
I got pushed back and lit my hand on fire to see. What did we get ourselves into...!?
"Demon Brat!!", I heard Bakugou's voice and saw him reaching for me. I reached for him but ended up transporting somewhere.
I woke up in front of the Ruins Zone to hear chuckles behind me.
"Fresh meat....", countless villains muttered.
My eyebrow twitched in annoyance. I bared my fangs, changing my form into an Oni.
"If anyone's meat, it's you idiots. I'll give you a 5 second head start to leave before I kick your asses.", I snarled, my knees wobbling as I stood.
Some of them back up but they still stay.
"Brave motherfuckers, aren't you? Fine.", I say, smirking but it quickly falls into a glare, the atmosphere grew tense. "That was your mistake."
I stomped the ground making large layers of platforms rise and fall on to them. Thank god, we were around an area where I could use dirt.
I stalked toward the rest, they backed away in fear. "Aw, don't run now...we're just getting started."
They all paled and ran away. "Punks.", I slipped out of the form, turning back. I looked around for any of my classmates nearby but no one was.
"I gotta find someone....", I muttered. Then I hear rumbles and blasts from above and I sweatdropped.
"That's gotta be Bakugou.", I say and fly up the stairs.
"SAY GOODBYE!!", I ducked out of the way of a villain being thrown my way and looked at Bakugou and Kirishima panting heavily with many villains surrounded around their feet.
"You guys okay?", I asked, walking toward them.
"Homura!", Kirishima notices me with a smile, knocking a goon out.
"You don't have a single scratch on you, Demon Brat.", Bakugou says.
"They all ran.", I say, shrugging and touching his arm, letting the heat on my hand heal his scratches and did the same for Kirishima.
"Your power's amazing, Homura. It doesn't even burn.", Kirishima grins widely, making me smile.
"Thanks.", I say, looking around at all the goons.
"We gotta have a plan to get out of here.", Kirishima says.
"You idiots can do whatever you want, I'm going after that warpy bastard.", Bakugou says, walking away.
"Huh...!? Our attacks didn't do nothing against that guy!", Kirishima says.
"And you're going alone? I think you're the only idiot here, Bakagou.", I say.
He looked over his shoulder to glare at me. "What was that...?"
"I said you're an idiot. Do I need to say it a little slower? If you go by yourself, you'll get yourself killed.", I say.
"That's the thing!", he says turning to me. "That bastard was their way in and out. So, I'm taking him down first before anything."
I felt someone's presence behind him and felt off. "Uh..."
Before I could say anything, he sent a blast downwards and revealed a knocked out enemy.
"If they're sending in weak shits like this, there's no way we can lose.", he says.
He looks so calm... "He's reliable despite being a little shit." , Tatsuo says in approval.
"So, that's what you meant. Also, when'd you become so calm and rational....? Usually you're all," Kirishima made an impression of Bakugou. "Die! Die! Die!!"
"I'm always calm and rational, you shitty haired punk!!", Bakugou yelled.
"There he is.", I say smiling.
"Both of you, fuck off!", Bakugou says.
"Okay, so, what you're saying is you believe in our classmates. That's good thinking, and that's thinking like a man, Bakugou. I'm with you.", Kirishima says excitedly.
I sigh and smile. "I guess I am too. I just hope you know what you're doing, please."
I looked outside to the rest of the USJ area to see a big creature holding a bloody Aizawa down.
I tensed and gasped softly as Kirishima put his hand on my shoulder. "You okay...?"
I just pointed down to the sight. "These sick sonuvabitches are gonna die....!", I hear Tatsuo growl.
They widened their eyes and backed away from the window.
I backed away and walked out the area and back to the middle of USJ.
"You got a plan...?", Bakugou asked.
I turned to him. "Just do what you normally do."
He just grinned widely, but that expression dropped as soon as we looked up to the entrance. And in the entrance stood All Might. He's... frowning? "Have no fear. Because I am here."
"I had a bad feeling in my stomach while I rested, but to think it was this bad....", he says coming down the stairs.
"I heard from young Iida that there were villains. But, it's all right now. Because I am here."
He rips off his tie and it flutters to the ground.
He came toward the fallen Aizawa and picked him up, carrying Midoriya, Tsuyu and Mineta away from the villains.
After ordering them to get Aizawa, All Might attacks the creature, doing a German suplex on it.
I saw how bad All Might was getting hurt and how Midoriya was rushing towards him.
"Get ready to fly.", I say to the two in front of me.
"Uh, what?"
I stomped the ground, launching them both toward the fight but they went in different ways.
I saw Midoriya reaching for the blue haired villain, but missed as Bakugou got in his way.
"Get the hell out of my way, Deku!!"
Bakugou attacked Kurogiri when Kirishima missed.
"Damn you!!", the hand villain exclaimed and I glared at him.
"I almost had him!", Kirishima yells after missing the villain.
I saw that part of that creature's body was covered in ice and I looked to my right seeing Todoroki.
"Fancy seeing you here.", I say.
"Likewise," he replied and looked toward the villain. "I heard about you bastards' plan and each of your roles. Also a scheme to kill All Might. The symbol of peace won't go down as easy as you fools."
"You guys made a big mistake.", I say smiling.
"Let's just kill them!", Tatsuo says. Let's not do that.
That being said, All Might pried himself out of the creature's hold and dashed away.
"You pinned down our revolving door..."
"This prick was never that sharp! That metal clasp you got on your body, you used to get all misty and shit just got sealed, you sneaky fuck!" Bakugou exclaims with a grin.
"That attack was never dangerous, was it? You just used that as a decoy to hide the real body!"
Kurogiri moves a little but stops as Bakugou uses small explosions on him.
"Don't you move!", Bakugou chuckles glaring down at Kurogiri. "You move so much as a twitch and I'll blow your ass up so bad that they'll be piecing you back together for weeks."
"Not very heroic, bro.", Kirishima grinned nervously.
"You've got us cornered....I have to hand it to these kids nowadays. At this point, the Villains Alliance will be a laughing stock.", the villain turns to the broken creature.
"Nomu, take care of Explosion Boy for me...."
I widened my eyes as Nomu regenerates its own body and goes after Bakugou.
"Bakugou!!", I yell, running towards it but I ended up right next to Bakugou who was also on the ground.
"You're okay...wait, how'd you get here?", I asked.
"I don't fuckin' know.", he says still on the ground, probably in shock.
I look back to see All Might had taken a hit from Nomu.
"Are you crazy...? Have you no mercy...? These are children.", All Might says.
"Mercy....?", the hand villain looks over to us and points at Midoriya. "That plain looking boy almost killed me but I need to give mercy!? Who gets to decide what's right or wrong...? Society! And that's what irritates me. You're the symbol of peace....? You gotta be kidding me. You're just the same. You’re only here for your kicks."
"That's enough.", I say.
"It's a 6 vs. 3.", Todoroki says.
"No! You all need to leave.", All Might says.
"No can do, All Might. Can't be heroes if we just left you here.", I say.
"Yeah and you're bleeding!", Midoriya said.
"If I hadn't froze that monster, you would've most likely died.", Todoroki interjected.
"It's fine.", All Might insisted.
"Fine, let's settle this! Nomu, you go after All Might. I've got the children.", the hand villain says running towards us.
I started walking toward the hand villain but Bakugou pulled me back.
Dammit, Bakugou!
My eyes illuminated a bright scarlet color and I shot a fiery blast toward the villain.
"Dammit, Brat!!", Bakugou shouted at me avoiding the heat.
"You're the boss, right?", I ask looking at the villain. "I'll just take you down first!!", I yell running towards him, feeling myself change into a form of an Oni.
I sent a roundhouse kick toward the hand villain's face, making it collide with the hand on his face. He fell to the ground and touched my leg.
I yelled in pain after seeing the aftermath of what remained of my leg.
My pant leg torn and my calf broken and bleeding out.
I got knocked over by the sudden blast of air because of how hard All Might and Nomu were fighting.
I pulled two metal rods from the ground and threw it at the villain but missed due to All Might's fighting.
With all this air and wind going everywhere, there's no telling where my blasts could go....
"Plus....ULTRA!!!", All Might yells, finally getting rid of Nomu.
"Alright!!", I exclaimed but felt a burning sensation on my shoulder and hip.
"I told you to keep your guard up!", Tomohiro yells in my head.
I saw that the villain had his hands on me and my skin broken, leaving muscle showing. I felt an overwhelming feeling of numbness as I fell to the ground.
"You bastard!!!", I heard Bakugou's voice and gunshots before passing out from the numbing pain.
I woke up to loud, slow beeping and looked around to see that I was in a different area.
I'm in the hospital....? No... Its the nurse's office...
I looked over to my right to see Kirishima asleep in two chairs, slumped over.
"You're finally awake.", I see Tomohiro walk over to my bed.
"Yeah....", I say, startling Recovery Girl.
"You're awake."
"How long have I been out...?"
I sounded so hoarse, it hurt to even try to talk.
"6 hours. Your wounds closed up quickly." she said.
I nodded and looked over to see the sleeping duo.
"He carried you in here.", the elder woman said, pointing to a sleeping Kirishima.
"Really...?", I asked.
As expected of Kirishima to do that, but why...?
That was kinda hard to believe. "The boy's... chivalrous...", Tatsuo says, appearing at my side.
Just then, the said boy stirred and woke up.
Kirishima jumps awake and looks at me. "How're you feeling!?"
"Like I've been walking in a desert for hours. I'm dying.", I hoarse.
Recovery Girl brings me water and I sit up to down it dry.
"What about you? Is All Might okay? Is everyone okay?", I asked.
"Everyone's doing fine. Well, Midoriya still has to let his legs heal and Aizawa-sensei... he's still healing too but everyone's fine.", Kirishima says.
"Good...", I rasp, staring up at the ceiling.
He frowned a bit in worry. "Do you think you can move?"
I winced and looked at my hip that had a small scar on it.
Still sensitive... "That villain wasn't any ordinary villain.", Tatsuo says.
I shook my head. "I'm sorry I worried you."
You guys too, I should've been more careful.
"Don't worry about it.", Tomohiro says as Tatsuo grunts in agreement.
"No biggie. Just get better so we can train again!", Kirishima says with a sharp tooth smile.
I smiled back at him and got out of the bed, wincing again and gripping on to the bed sheets.
"My leg...my shoulder and hip hurts. Great.", I mutter.
"Hm...", Kirishima hums. He turns around, crouching in front of my feet. "Get on."
"Kirishima-"
"No complaints. It wouldn't be very manly of me if I let you walk home hurt, so get on.", he says.
I sighed and got on his back, careful to not hurt his back.
I held on tight as he got me right and took my bag, carrying it under me as he walked me out of the nurse's office, getting me home.
Siren!Taeil: Eye of the Beholder {1}
CHAPTER ONE // NEXT
❃ Taeil didn’t know which was worse: being a male in a family of purely female sirens or being a rare phenomenon in a group of ‘normals’. He never had it easy growing up and going against everything which makes a siren didn’t make it any easier. He would always be thankful for that fateful day when Angel!Taeyong saved him. However when a certain individual puts all of N City on their toes as they’re a risk to another citizen’s life, why can’t Taeil feel nothing except sympathy towards her instead of the hatred the other’s hold? ❃
۵‗✩⑈
"Taeil," Taeyong gently shook the older brother and gave him a warm smile as his tired eyelids fluttered open. "You can go to bed now. Y/N's asleep, I've got everything under control."
He quickly checked on your sleeping figure in the infirmary bed. He didn't know how long he was out but he was certain that you were awake the last time he saw you. Slowly he stood up, giving a small thanks to Taeyong before leaving the infirmary room. He wouldn't go to bed, he didn't need to, all he did need was some fresh air and thinking time.
Quietly, avoiding waking up any of the other residents, he made his way through the dimly lit corridors until finding the back door. Sliding it open carefully he tiptoed out, allowing the cool midnight breeze to blow on his face. It was a quick walk to the lake. Well it was more of a stream really.
As he reached the water's edge he finally sat down with the grass underneath him, occasionally the wind would move the grass in such a way that it'd dance in between his fingers, lightly tickling him. He had an urge to shift into his siren form but decided against it, knowing the younger boys they're probably spying on him right now from their bedroom windows.
He brought his head down to the grass and lay there, silently. The grass moulded underneath him, leaving his temporary mark into the land. He could hear the lake gently lapping against the bed, running further and further upstream. There was probably a river somewhere nearby, acting out as a branch into the wide and vast ocean.
Ocean. That word alone reminded him of...home. Could he really call it a home though?
It always surprised him how he even managed to survive. No one had realised he was different until he was six, when sirens get their human form. His once loving family turned on him just like that. Why? He was a young boy, not a girl.
He had loved where he lived. The small, grassy cove reached out onto the beach. The grass had a different feel to the one that grew at N City, it was more...rough. Pretty much summed up his whole childhood. At first it'd start with the girls his age, pushing and shoving. As soon as Taeil retaliated though that's when the older sirens began to torture him.
They left scars but they were easy to hide with clothes, he couldn't say the same for his siren form. That's why he refuses unless necessary, he doesn't need his friends to see him like that.
"Taeil hyung!" A young voice yelled out, his feet flattening the grass beneath each stride. This was someone who didn't care if he woke others. Donghyuck. "What are you doing out here?"
Taeil quickly wiped a stray tear and lifted himself up from the ground. Donghyuck bounded into him, wrapping his arms around his elder brother. He awkwardly returned the affection, he himself wasn't much of a skinship person.
"It's cold out here," Hyuck shivered as he pulled away. Taeil noticed he was barefoot and only wearing shorts with a thin, white shirt.
There was a moment of silence between the two. A chilling breeze blew passed them both, pinching their revealed skin. Hyuck quickly brought his hands to his upper arms and rubbed in a sad attempt to warm himself up.
"You didn't need to come out," Taeil eventually smiled and brought an arm around Hyuck's shoulders. "I was just getting some air before going to bed but let's get inside now. You're right, it's freezing."
Maneuvering back into the mansion Hyuck looked up in awe at Taeil. He didn't say anything, he knew Taeil wouldn't talk about this stuff with him but he had so much hurt in his eyes, so much pain, yet kept it inside and kept being his jokey self. Much like himself. He admired Taeil for that.
After walking Hyuck back up to his room which he shared with Jaemin and Renjun Taeil finally collapsed into his bed. He had to resist the urge not to run back to your infirmary room and go to bed in the chair again, just so he could be there for her when she woke up. Maybe he was being too attentive though so he decided against it, he didn't want to give others the wrong idea.
Settling down under his duvet and forcing his past memories out of his mind Taeil was finally able to sleep. Before he was completely gone a small smile sketched onto his features as a quick image of you fluttered through his mind. You were sleeping, safe and sound in the infirmary two floors below him, a smile which mirrored his own blessing your delicate features.
۵‗✩⑈
"TAEIL GET UP WE NEED YOU!" A series of knocks hammered at his door as various voices yelled his name. As of yet he was in no real hurry to get up, usually when this happened -and it tended to happen a lot in a house with the devil himself in it- there ended up being no real threat but instead a cream pie waiting to smack him in the face.
"TAEIL IT'S Y/N!"
Now he was up. If his fate did end up being a cream pie then he can bet that whoever the pranker was would soon become the prankee.
Dashing into your infirmary room with a sense of urgency he immediately went to your side. You were out cold, pale and seemingly unresponsive.
Taeil's eyes scanned the faces which accompanied him in the room: Taeyong, Doyoung, Jaehyun and ... Mingcheng. Quickly doing a body scan of the latter he released a sigh of relief- she was carrying no weapons and she didn't seem triumphant. Always a good sign.
"Taeyong what happened? How did her vitals drop so drastically you told me she was doing fine!" Taeil questioned, he knew he should have never left your side, screw the attentive nonsense he would've been there for you when you needed him most.
"Her heart and breathing rate dropped after another... episode. We've put her on oxygen but we aren't medics Taeil, this type of healing is beyond my powers. I heal bones. Not curses," Taeyong said sternly, not appreciating Taeil's seemingly ungrateful tone.
He took note of the oxygen mask and evaluated your chest movements, not quite how he'd like it but assumed it was an improvement.
Suddenly a pang of realisation hit him, how he had forgotten the most important piece of information he didn't know. "Episode? Is Nev okay, what happened?"
"About time grandpa. She's fine, shaken up but fine. Your little friend here tried to kill her she's lucky she-"
"She tried to kill her Taeyong? But I thought she was bed ridden," it was more of a observation than a question, although he failed to observe the very obvious glares which Mingcheng was shooting through him.
"Did he just interrupt me?" She hissed to her mate, Jaehyun, evidently pissed off.
"He's on edge babe-" "He'll be on the edge of my foo-"
"Jaehyun. Mingcheng. Please go check on Nev and Leon, shoot I should really check on Leon...Taeil, could you give me a second? Come on you two," Taeil just nodded, not watching the three of them leave and not giving Doyoung much of his attention either. His full focus was on you, this wasn't the secure figure he pictured last night, no this was the exact opposite.
There was a gentle silence which occasionally was interrupted by the sound of the heart monitor. Every time a sharp 'beep' pierced through the air Taeil would look up and check your heart rate, noting down if there was an improvement or not every time mainly for his own sanity. He was so absorbed in...You, that he forgot about Doyoung who was sat on the chair opposite the bed, checking out his older brother's behaviour and gentleness regarding you.
"Why do you like her so much?" He suddenly questioned, cocking on eyebrow in a way which Taeil couldn't stand, as if Doyoung had just figured out his entire life story by watching him for five minutes.
"I have no clue what you're on about," Taeil dismissed by shaking his head. "Who's Leon?"
"Just some Lion girl who's been stabbed or shot can't remember the exact details, brought some half wolf dude with her or something too. Now answer my question." Doyoung leaned back in his chair now, his long legs outstretched across the floor.
"You should really pay attention to the people Taeyong saves. Maybe then people will like you?" Taeil sniped back, mimicking his younger brother's actions as he leant back in his chair. Debating whether to stretch out his legs too he decided against it, he was much smaller than Doyoung and didn't need to prove it.
"What's the point? They looked like a total mad show anyway. I don't waste my breath on obviously crazy people."
"Yet you ended up living with sixteen of them, now more if you count the mates. You should loosen up, you're stressed," Taeil smiled as Doyoung chuckled to himself. He had got him there, the residents at N CITY were far from sane.
"I should say the same for you hyung, you should let us in and not push us away when we ask you stuff," now Doyoung had evened out the score. Taeil couldn't think of a reply and the sharp 'beep' of your machine left him unable to think straight anyway as he quickly noted down the results.
"I'm gonna check on Lion Girl and Wolf Boy, call us if anything happens okay?"
Taeil just nodded in response, "see you wizard boy," he smirked as the door clicked behind Doyoung as he left him by himself with you by his side.
He liked the thought of that, you standing by his side, just the thought of you standing without needing support made him happy.
He wanted you to be happy but this was just the sympathy talking... right?
Past and Present: Chapter 35
Tucker and the Fentons gathered in the living room around the couch where they had moved Sarah's body. She still wasn't breathing, and they hadn't witnessed any sign of life as they had moved her. The worry was really beginning to set in now, realizing that she may not be coming back and not knowing how to break the news to Sam when she and Danny finally returned.
"She was always so welcoming when I'd come over to visit Sam," Tucker began, "never judging me for my weird quirks, always excited to know that I was there for Sam."
"It just doesn't make sense!" Jack boomed. "She was fine earlier today!"
"Jack… we don't live in a world that makes sense anymore. Ghosts of the past returning. Prophecies coming true. I bet you anything there's a link in all of this."
Even though she was trying to be sensible, in the back of her mind, Maddie couldn't make sense of it all either.
"Mads, there has to be something we can do!" Jack tried.
"Like what? We can't bring people back from the dead!" Maddie said angrily.
"Yeah, only one ghost could do that, and we just defeated him."
--
All three figures turned, shock clear on their faces, to see Danny and Sam at the top of the basement stairs.
"Sam!" Tucker cried, running over to hug his friend.
"Danny," The Fentons sighed as Danny took another step into the room.
"You did it?" Maddie asked, stepping forward.
"Yup," was all Danny could say.
"Clockwork, he's… gone?"
"Something like that," Danny grinned.
"And you're… well wait, what are you now?" Maddie asked, noticing that Danny had returned in his human form.
"It's a long story, but I think we need to save that for later. Right now, we just need to wake Sarah."
"Grandma!" Sam had been so wrapped in her embrace with Tucker that she had almost forgotten why they'd rushed home. Letting him go, she ran over to her grandmother. Kneeling by the couch, she looked up to the Fentons.
"What happened exactly?"
"Oh sweetie, we don't know. She was fine while we were downstairs helping Danny navigate. But then when I came up to check, she was on the floor, passed out cold."
Sam looked at Danny, puzzlement in her eyes.
"You don't think it has to do with me?"
"Huh?"
Danny had had a long day, and the events of his most recent confrontation were all starting to blur together.
"When I took off my medallion and almost died... there's been a link between us this whole time. What if that link is what did this?"
Danny's mind reeled.
'Could it be true? The connection between Sam and Sarah has always been strong, but is it strong enough to affect one when the other is down?'
"Sam, be reasonable. How is that even possible?"
"You're asking me about how something is possible! You're a boy from the past who returned as a ghost and is practically human again! Don't ask me how something is possible anymore Danny!"
Sam couldn't take it. She just knew there was a link to her own near-death and her grandmother. But how were they supposed to break it?
'She has a point you know,' thought Danny. 'You did return from the dead and you are regaining humanity. Not to mention how you managed to revive her in the Ghost Zone. There has to be a cure…'
Danny turned back to the group, an idea in his head.
"In the Zone, when Sam almost… died… I somehow managed to bring her back. It was just like those old fairy tales where one character admits their love for the other and they all live happily ever after. What if... I have to admit my love again. For Sam. Break whatever link is left between me and Sarah, so that she can finally be free of our past?"
"But Danny, how could that work?" Maddie pointed out. "Even if you do that now, it won't seem authentic since you planned it."
"She's right you know," Tucker added.
"Well then, maybe it's not me that has to do it. Maybe it's Sam," Danny concluded as they all turned to look at her.
"Me? What… how… huh?" Sam stumbled.
"Sam, you need to save your grandmother. Ever since I revealed the truth about us, you've had this fear that I'd want to go back to her."
"But... but…"
"Don't deny it Sam! Even now I can tell you are worried about my commitment to her. And yes, she was my first, but now, don't you see, my feelings aren't what they were anymore. I can't keep living in the past. I have to learn to adapt to this crazy modern world, and I need to be with you as I do it. Not someone from 50 years ago, but someone from right here, right now. Someone who I saved from a rooftop weeks ago, and someone who has saved me on countless occasions since. Someone who will always have my back no matter how weird it is that I'm a ghost and that I don't get the point of those iPhone things."
"Danny, it's not that. I do believe that you're in this with me for the long run, but I just…"
"Listen to what your heart is saying. You know that after all of this, we are destined to be together. Heck! I bet we were even destined to be together before you were born. I bet Clockwork had this crazy plan and knew that because of my death back then, Sarah would end up with a family now, and you'd come along and find me. That seems like something he'd do, right? So stop denying what you know is true."
"I know. I think I've known for a while now. It's just, hard. I know I said I would help you when it's time to take on ghosts and save the world, but what if I'm not? What if something happens, or what if… we break up?" Sam stuttered at this last one, finding it hard to believe that would ever happen.
Shocked that she would even think those things after all they had been through, Danny took a moment before replying.
"Sam. Destiny is weird. Believe me, I know. And time is weird. Things can change. And if something happens and we end up… breaking up… well that's life I guess. But for the time being, I need to know that you are going to be by my side and help me figure this out. We need each other, Sam. And Sarah wouldn't want it any other way."
Sam looked into his blue eyes again, still so used to the green ones that had saved her that night. Could she really get used to this? Being a part of this crazy destiny? She thought for a moment, thought about everything that had happened since that night. All they had been through… together.
"That night… when I almost… I didn't think anyone cared. Anyone wanted to see me alive. But then you took my hand and haven't let go. Danny, as much as I saved you, you've saved me more. You've shown me that life is worth living, and as long as you're here, I will be too."
Suddenly Sam jerked forward, having been leaning against the couch this whole time. Everyone else looked her way and froze.
Sarah sat up, chipper as ever. "What?"
"Grandma!" Sam stepped forward, embracing her in warm hug.
"Oh Sammy, don't be so dramatic, you act as if I just died or something." She turned to Danny at this and gave him a small wink.
"But, how?"
"Why don't you tell me that. One minute I'm out on a walk and the next I'm on the ground, passed out. Hearing voices worried about me but unable to do anything. The whole time, all I can think about is how you two need to stop that annoying ghost and get back here to wake me up!"
"So you heard… everything?" Danny asked.
"Yes, Danny, everything. And don't worry, I'm not upset. Why would you, a strong, young man—er ghost?—want to get back together with me, an elderly old fogey?"
"Grandma, you're not THAT old!"
"Either way, I'm not here to stand in anyone's way. Yes, it seems odd that my granddaughter is in love with my ex-boyfriend, but given the circumstances, well… it's fine. Now give me my scooter so we can be moving on."
Danny and Sam both turned to each other, utter confusion on their faces. Was that really it?
"Hold up Sarah!" Maddie said before reaching for the scooter. "You almost died today. I think we need to run some tests."
"Ha! No thanks! I'll take my chances," Sarah replied with a hint of sarcasm.
"Well, at least let's stick around long enough to hear how they did it!" Jack added, excitement in his voice. "Or am I the only one who wants to hear about how Danny defeated the great Clockwork!"
Everyone turned to look at Danny again.
"Oh yea… that." Danny half grinned as he rubbed his arms. "I guess I should start at the beginning."
--
"So after all this time, all it took was you learning to control your powers?" Tucker asked, still in awe of Danny's story.
"I think it's always been more that that," Danny commented, a bit worn out from his explanation. "Someone in that Zone has known for centuries that by creating me, he'd be creating his own undoing. But I don't know if controlling my powers is really what defeated him."
"But until you really learned to take control, you didn't have the power to end him," Jack added.
"Right. But controlling my abilities is only half of the story. If we've all learned anything today, it's that love and family are just as powerful as any ghost."
"And your love for Sam, it's what helped you, isn't it?" Maddie added.
Danny looked at Sam, a sparkle in his eyes, and nodded.
"If she hadn't been there with me, I don't think I ever would have realized my true potential. Not to mention all the human emotions I was feeling before that when I was around her."
"But, dude, now what?" Tucker asked.
He again looked at Sam, this time implying that she should answer.
"I just confessed my love, isn't that enough for you?" she said with a bit of sarcasm.
Danny chuckled.
"I don't know. I don't know if I'm human. I don't know if I'm a ghost. I think I'm both. Does that mean I'll start aging again? Maybe. Does that mean I can sleep and eat and do all the things I used to do? Probably. Unfortunately, the Observants didn't really tell me much. But I think… I'm ok with that. Because I have Sam. And Sarah. And you guys. You're my family now. And no matter what time period I'm from, I'm here, in the now, and I'm not going anywhere."
The group grinned at this, happy to know that Danny had found his peace.
"But don't think for a minute you guys can start treating me like a kid! I've seen and done more than any of you. And curfews? NOPE."
Danny laughed at his own joke this time, but in the process a wisp of cold air came from his mouth. Eyes glowing green, he whipped his head around to see a streak fly by the window.
Sam grabbed his hand, sensing that he had a job to do.
"Remember what he said. Your job isn't done. It probably won't ever be. But that's ok. Go. Do what you were destined to do."
He looked around and nodded, determination on his face as he let two glowing rings form around his body to transform into his now familiar ghost form.
