Deus ex Machina only works if it's built up from the beginning. Similar to Checkovs Gun.
Also, Aang was only there for the last year of a hundred year war. He has no grasp on what war really is compared to the rest of the Gaang. As a matter of fact, he doesn't seem to take war seriously at all the entire run of the show. Why? Because he missed the whole thing. He has no idea. And it's not because he is 12 years old... if that were true, then we also need to hold Toph to the same level. Even after finding out about the Air Nomads, he doesn't really take it seriously. He takes the things that happen to HIM seriously, but not what is really going on with people around him. He's a selfish kid. The complete opposite of what the Air Nomads believe. Does this make him a villain? Not really, but it does make him a seriously flawed character.
But here is the other part I have problems with... the kid has a kill count already.
Yeah, we can blame it on the Ocean Spirit, but it was Aang's choice to be the conduit for the Ocean Spirit's wrath. Therefore, he is responsible. It's never addressed again, but Aang is absolutely responsible for the Fire Nation soldiers that were killed during the attack on the Northern Water Tribe. He's responsible for Zhao's death... he has to deal with the consequences of his choice, but it never happens. So when he has to fight Ozai, even after speaking with another Airbender Avatar who said 'uh yeah, kill the dude' he was like 'nah homie, I don't kill people' completely ignoring the fact that he has already done so.
It's fucking ridiculous!
And then you get the Deus Ex Machina... like what in the shit is this? Cop out!
See this is what happens when you give me time to analyze characters.
I turn onto a fire breathing dragon.
