The Ugly Anxiety

Anxiety comes in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes it's sitting in a meeting, having just finished your coffee, holding onto your empty disposable cup waiting for someone else to stand up to throw theirs away first because you're too nervous to be the first one out of your seat. Other times it's waking up on a Sunday morning with every intention to go have lunch with your family out of town and stopping in to see your best friend on your way home but halfway home, the drive is too much and you want to call your friend and ask to reschedule because you're so anxious to just get home, to just feel the ground beneath your feet in a familiar place. But you can't pull your phone out because your baby is in the backseat and what if the second you take your hand off the steering wheel you cause an accident killing you both. So you get home and intend on calling her so that she's not just waiting around for you and worrying that maybe you're not ok. But you're afraid if you tell her you're not coming she'll be mad and you can't handle anyone being mad at you, so instead you turn your phone off for an entire day and cry knowing you failed again, hoping she is understanding, again for the millionth time. Sometimes it can come when you're at your calmest state, this creeping feeling that somethings not right but you can't quite put your finger on it, you check in with your closest friends and family and everyone is safe, everything is fine but the anxiety grows stronger and the more you try to calm yourself the more intense it gets. Anxiety is all of the what ifs that would never happen in a lifetime, all at once. It's constantly thinking you're not good enough, that no one wants to be around you anymore because you're flaky. You slowly stop being invited out for lunch with your friends and it grows so much you're not even considered a candidate for jobs. It's working jobs for a couple weeks and then no call no showing because someone gave you constructive criticism one time and you feel like everyone there hates you and are trying to make you quit, until they eventually stop calling and take you off the schedule and you're unemployed again knowing damn well the bills are behind. It's not making appointments for necessary reasons because when you dial the number you instantly forget why you called and hang up instead because the anxiety in your head tells you whoever you're trying to call is going to think you're an idiot if you stumble on a single word. These are all things that have happened to me just in the last week, because I can't calm my mind. I don't let my kids play outside unless another adult is present because too many things could go wrong. And there is never another adult around because no one makes plans with me anymore because im too flaky. Loving someone with anxiety is more than just loving them, you can't look at their anxious behavior as a charming quirk. Because it's not glamorous. Its not desirable, it's hard work loving someone with anxiety. So to those who love me despite my mental illness, I admire you. Because I don't love myself, and I'm the one with the anxiety. I hate myself for not being able to be there in times I should be. I've skipped weddings, the births of my favorite little people because hospitals aren't safe, wedding parties aren't safe. Safe is in my home with the curtains drawn, doors locked and phone calls screened because I wouldn't dare answer an unknown number without first googling the number or waiting to see if they'll leave a message. Anxiety, as I've said, comes in all shapes and sizes. You may have all of the above, a mixture of them, and even more I haven't stated. Whatever it is to you, you're not alone. I Should practice what I preach but I won't, because my anxiety convinces me that I'm not worthy, that I am completely alone, that no one could ever possibly imagine what it's like to be me. I get chronic migraines because I stress out so intensely that it causes physical pain, and i don't want anyone in the world to ever feel like this. I am working on me, it's not going to be an overnight fix. It might not happen for me for years but the point is I'm trying. I'm trying for me, my kids and the ones I love. I hope you're trying too, I hope you find even the smallest amount of hope and light to guide you away from the dark times. Its 2020, and the world is a shit show, but there are resources available now that are easier than ever to utilize. And i hope if you got anything from reading this, its that you are so much more amazing and so loved and valued than you could ever realize. Take advantage of those resources, whatever that looks like to you. Go to therapy, take your meds, call a friend, open the curtains a little and drink some water. Promise me you will try one small thing to better yourself today so that tomorrow may be brighter.

Declarations, Mental Health, and Other Things You Never Asked Me to Explain About Myself but I’m Gonna Anyways

Ok, it's been almost a year since my last update on this and I wanted to explain myself a bit? And also share my story a bit??? 

This is all personal stuff so no need to read if you can’t handle it right now or don’t want to handle it. You’re not obligated to, but I felt it was important to share all this.

SO. Last year I had been working in a hostile working environment under an abusive supervisor for 2 years. One of the things I had done a right before I got that job (and was unemployed, depressed, and heavily suicidal) was I picked up writing fanfiction again. I had been in about a two or three year dry spell where I was writing fanfiction but never posting. Just writing it for me. And then I'd unceremoniously dropped all after posting a Mass Effect fic that had great response/reviews. Because the pressure was too much for me.

I found SW: TCW while unemployed and desperately seeking something to help lift my spirits and distract me from my known but untreated mental health. I wanted VERY desperately to find something enjoyable in life again. I was literally only alive because I was afraid of where my cat would be placed when I died. I kept seeing interesting meta posts from MyLordShesaCactus and AlexKablob about someone called Barriss Offee and someone called Ahsoka Tano. Deciding that I had literally nothing to lose I gave the show a watch.

It was a lifeline. During a time where I regularly had nightmares of being a robot that was torn apart and decommissioned, or dreams where I'd barely nick myself and suddenly start bleeding out, SW TCW became an obsession. I was years too late to the fandom but I still found active people and love for this girl who was a little Too Much and a little Too Pushy and a little Too Scared to Fail. Ahsoka hits all my bingo slots for characters I project heavily onto. And soon enough my nightmares, while still consistent, were no longer a given. Sometimes I dreamed about star wars instead. The first time I had a dream where I WAS Ahsoka Tano I woke up and cried because I'd felt so good.

Then I got hired in what I thought was a life affirming and saving way, and instead was shoved into a different kind of hell. I became so depressed that first year that I self harmed by starving myself and denying myself sleep. Which, of course, makes it worse. I started writing "Twilight" as a way to cope with my increasing intrusive thoughts about suicide and physical self harm. Then it became a way to deal with intrusive thoughts about wanting to harm others. I needed an outlet and was denying that I need medication to manage my mental health.

I didn’t expect anyone to read it and like it. I thought people would hate it. Because it was awful because I’m awful, and therefore nothing I did could be good.

But people did like it. A lot.

Then I was escorted to Psychiatric Emergency Services because I wanted to kill myself on the job. The whole episode is a little weird in my mind, time warped a bit and I remember crying nonstop and being unable to stop shouting, but when I look back what I remember most is feeling completely calm. Calm and soft and light. I think that was due to me finally verbalizing my thoughts and seeing that others did care. That I wasn’t some worthless pest to them. When I got to PES enough time passed that I got my panic attack under control, and when a psychiatrist finally saw me I downplayed the whole incident out of fear I was going to be institutionalized. I was scared as fuck in my little temp room in my little plastic chair staring at my hospital band and desperately hoping that none of the other people there would talk to me. So when I saw professionals I lied. I got a doctor’s note to stay out of work for two days and went home.

I finally had to admit to myself that I was not doing well. I was not handling my anxiety or depression. I was not ok and that it was ok to not be ok.

I was still scared to get professional help.

Instead, I spent that November participating in NaNoWriMo, where I wrote what would later become the first several chapters of “The Apprenticeship”. The first installment to the Close But No Cigar AU. I decided that I wanted and needed to write something that was happier. Ahsoka Tano made me happy and I wanted to do something good, anything good (for once in my fucking life). And convinced that I’d never done a good thing and never could, I decided to do a good thing first for a fictional character. So in I went to a story where Ahsoka Tano was an anxious wreck of a person, but had support and help and love. Into a world where Anakin Skywalker got the sort of help he needed. A place where they could all still meet and be friends and be family. Not somewhere with no pain, but somewhere softer.

The next month I finally got a PCP, and at the ass crack of 2017 I finally got medicated again.

I had already posted the first chapter of The Apprenticeship and energized by the meds and the reviews I got hard to work on finishing that story.

Funny thing about medicine, it’s a hassle and often the first thing you take is a unique struggle that requires adjustment. My first medication seemed great! For about two weeks! Then I developed a hand tremor so serious I couldn’t feed myself. That night I seriously struggled to not drive my car into the oncoming traffic lane and avoided all bridges on my way home from work. What I took helped my depressive symptoms but made my anxiety worse. The hand tremor was also a serious and rare side effect. The next day I was off that medicine and on a new one along with gabapentin to help the tremors.

Writing was difficult as fuck with my fingers shaking and twitching on the keyboard but I needed it as much as my medicine.

The new stuff worked out much better for me, we tweaked the dosage and I’m still on it. I’m glad to be on it!

Let’s do a little time skip shall we? That summer, a year after my experience at PES, I started writing Declarations. I wanted to see more Ahsoka & Obi-Wan content. They seemed like two people who should be close friends, have more of a father-daughter relationship, and general be together more than they were on screen. I found the idea of two Temple raised Jedi, who seem to break a bit from the mold and thinking of the Order, exploring their feelings for one another to be fascinating. I quickly realized that it would work really well to show that they are both mentally ill as well. I don’t like the term “mental illness” but it is accurate so I use it.

So I seeded it in from the start. I wanted to have two good people with anxiety and depression and PTSD and who knows what else find each other and help each other out! I wanted Ahsoka and Obi-Wan to be happy damn it!

So I started writing the story I wanted to see.

And unwittingly did what I had already been doing, pouring my own personal self into the story.

I’m not saying that putting some of yourself into your writing is bad, it really isn’t! Writing can be an amazing tool to explore your own experiences and sort your own feelings. I had been using it for over a year at that point to help cope with my own awful experiences, many of which I was still having to live with and through.

What happened for me is that I put a little too much of myself into this story. At the same time I was doing that my supervisor had gotten even stranger and in some ways worse. I didn’t have daily dread of being fired but I still had daily dread over who I would find when I arrived. My supervisor came in two flavors: Angry and Blaming, or Sweet and Frivolous. I still can’t decide if she was really just that abusive or if she also could use a helping hand in the mental health department. I really can’t. She did abuse me verbally and emotionally at work, she did gaslight me, she did scare me. I’m not saying that she wasn’t an abuser at all but I just don’t know if she was that way because she needs help too.

I hope she gets help if she needs it. But I’ll be grateful if I never have to see her again in my life.

Back to Declarations.

I put too much in and it had great reviews and lots of love, and I got very nervous and defensive over it. Too defensive and nervous over it. I really want to shout out to White_Ithiliel again, because she really helped me make this fic A LOT BETTER. Like, A LOT. Y’all don’t even realize what she has saved you from!! In the process she also has had to deal with my wild anxiety issues and defensiveness.

Seriously, thank you for everything you’ve done for this fic and your endless patience with me!

The latest chapter I wrote in the spring of 2018, we started going back and forth with edits in the summer, and then I panicked over a good question and point she made. She wrote back and I very nervously peeked at her cropped response (the “show less” version) sometime around October 2018. My abusive supervisor had left but I had been asked to work with/under another lady who wasn’t not my supervisor. She was almost equally bad in another direction for me. My anxiety spiked and my depression got terrible again around the time we were working on this chapter. I saw literally half a sentence and read it weirdly, panicked, had a good cry, and closed the document.

I literally haven’t been in the head space to look at it since then.

My best friend moved in with me that fall, but he’d just had a suicide attempt a few month before. My own mental health, as I mentioned, was plummeting. This past winter my depression got out of hand. I stopped going to my band practices, I nearly stopped writing, I was exhausted. The only reason I didn’t go back to eating poorly and treating myself like shit was because he was there, and just having someone be physically there who I knew cared about me made a huge difference. If I had popcorn for dinner too often, he’d make us a frozen pizza. If I drank too much (and I abused alcohol this past winter for sure), he was there to help me with the hangover and violent sickness. Thank god for my best friend! My suicidal ideation went up but I didn’t become suicidal. This was the first winter in almost a decade where I haven’t wanted to seriously kill myself at some point. I had flashes of it, moments where the bottom of the world dropped out but they lasted for minutes or hours instead of weeks and months.

I talk to him a lot about my fics and fandoms, and he very patiently listens and helps me work through it all. He lets me read him what I’ve written or what I’m reading if I think it’s funny, and we talked a lot about this chapter of Declarations and my reaction to a sincere question regarding its content and characterizations. He offered to look at the chapter with me and see what my editor/beta’s response had actually been versus what I was afraid it was.

I turned him down in November for that because I realized I needed space and time away from this particular fic. This story where I made myself into Ahsoka and Obi-Wan and Anakin, which I could no longer separate the fictional world I had created from the emotions I was feeling about my “real life”.

White_Ithiliel, I am so SO sorry I never responded. I know my silence was probably anxiety inducing too. I want to say again that you didn’t do anything wrong or rude or mean to me. I just wasn’t mentally in a place to be doing what I was doing, and needed to turn myself off and on again.

Today, after having a full week of writing and nearly daily updating fics I enjoy I realized that my life has changed since winter.

I am at a new job with wonderful people that I really enjoy. It pays better so I’m also less stressed about money. My benefits finally kick in today and I plan on getting me a therapist soon along with a new PCP. I’m doing alright. I’m doing better than I have in years.

A huge part of that is thanks to having people PM me here on tumblr and being so genuinely enthusiastic about the stories that I write. So here’s to you all for helping me through my funk over the years, giving me ideas, and giving me a damn good laugh! dontcallmebugaboo

Y’all have been life savers, maybe even more so than I realized until I decided to write this whole crazy thing out!

Thanks to all of you, even those who just leave me a kudos or a like, I’ve been trucking along. Fandom has literally saved my life multiple times, and probably will again.

So today, feeling high on my new found writing powers, I finally went in and finished editing for the latest chapter of Declarations! Hell yeah me! :D

That said! I’m putting it on a formal hiatus!

I have the next chapter written (not edited) and several chapter ideas throw out on the page, but I also think I still need more time away from this story. I want to finish Declarations (y’all don’t understand how BADLY I WANT TO FINISH IT), but I also know that right now, where we are, we are literally on SEASON ONE, EPISODE 2.

Legit the next chapter takes place after the malevolence (AKA Episode 2 of season 1).

And we are currently over 32k in.

This is gonna be a long ass haul fic everybody. I didn’t expect it to be, I didn’t mean it to be, I wasn’t planning on it. I meant for it to be maybe 10 chapters and be super vague about the timeline.

But I think I’m just as much in love with this story as a lot of you are and dang it I want more! That means I have to write more, and that means I need to give myself space to actually be approaching it as a story.

And not as something I wish was happening in my life.

To anyone still reading, thank you, this thing was long than some of the stories I’ve written! But I wanted to share this. Yes, to explain why Declarations is currently in carbonite. But more importantly to talk about mental health.

Mental health fucking sucks my dudes. It’s hard and it’s messy and sometimes it comes out of nowhere and then leaves after eating your favorite snacks and cold clocking you at 3 AM.

I’ve been on a hell of a journey.

And a lot of you are too.

I’m not “tumblr famous” and I don’t think I’m any sort of well known fandom writer. But There’s enough of you out there that I wanted to post this in case you need to know that you’re not alone out there.

Accidentally self inserted myself into a fic and didn’t realize it until asked about why characters were acting that way, got angry over someone not knowing what I didn’t even know especially when it wasn’t explicit, then immediately felt like the Worst Person ever for getting mad and anxious, went home and cried ugly sobs on my cat, debated if I deserved to live before immediately deciding that DUH OF COURSE I DO, but that I was just a sad sack and everyone knew it, ate one single can of vienna sausage directly out of the can for dinner, washed it down with waaaay too much box wine, cried again about fictional characters because I had “ruined” them, asked my best friend (drunkenly mind you) if I was a good person because I thought I was secretly the worst and a manipulator b/c I self inserted myself into my own fanfiction, and then spent the next 6 months or so anxiously opening and closing my google doc in fear of What I Might Learn About Myself or worse the discovery that I Had Been A Bad Person b/c I stated my thought process out clearly but obviously that’s just “mean” to do because I am a bad and can’t not do mean or something! 

Like...I get why I did it but fucks sake me. It took a lot of broken logic to get there. Looking back I don’t know how I did that actually. This is a self call out. I am @ing myself.

So, yeah.

Jade Goody is a 27-year-old ex-dental nurse who came to fame through an appearance on Big Brother in 2002, and then again in Celebrity Big Brother in 2007 when she seized the publicity opportunity handed to her by Shilpa Shetty.

She came from an under-privileged background. Her father was of mixed race - a drug addict and criminal who died of a drugs overdose at the age of 42. Her bisexual mother was incapable of showing her any love or affection throughout her entire life, being a demented, evil little woman filled with hatred for just about everything and everyone.

In spite of this, Jade put her laughing eyes and quick, intelligent agile mind and body to work for herself. She was determined not to grow old gracefully and impoverished, and started on a journey that would take her to places she knew only in her mind.

Her big opportunity came in 2002 through Big Brother, where she exposed the vulnerability of others to drag herself into the limelight. By the end of summer 2002, she was described as 'a nasty slapper, Public Enemy Number One, the most hated woman in Britain and a monster'.

This was her springboard to celebrity status and all that goes with it - and she knew it. She took hold of life in both hands always delivering what people wanted from her: turmoil, sex, raw passion and the chance to vent their anger.

She was Jade, Unadulterated Jade - Warts and All; the adult version of an unprotected little girl who was handed a joint to smoke by her mother at the age of 5; the same little girl who was subject to her mother's beatings and mental torture for as far back as she cares to remember.

As a result of the chance to appear on Big Brother, she is now estimated to be worth £3.3 million through her appearances on reality TV, her perfume Shh..Jade Goody, backstabbing, tearful multiple apologies on radio and television, continuous cancer scares, 54,000 complaints from viewers to Ofcom and Channel 4 and many death threats, Christmas Dinner with Jade Goody (a book and DVD featuring her two sons), a brief appearance on Bigg Boss (the Indian version of Big Brother), her autobiography Jade: Catch a Falling Star, a weekly column in Now Magazine, the Wicked Queen in the pantomime Snow White, Living With Jade Goody TV documentary, beauty salons called Homme Fatal catering exclusively for men, relationships with Jeff Brazier, the father of her two sons, and footballer Ryan Amoo, who she lived with for about six months, her rows and breakups with Jack Tweed who she married courtesy of OK Magazine and Living TV - and many, many other personal appearances in magazines, and on radio and TV.

Jade has also made a lot of money from setting up shoots with paparazzi photographers who split the sales with her.

She owns three houses and a £60,000 turbo-charged Range Rover, and may still have the Bentley Continental GTC sports car worth £130,000. Her perfume is the fifth biggest seller in the UK with sales going up daily, as Max Clifford and his team ceaselessly parade her bald, dying body in our faces hour after hour.

Jade Goody has sold around 120,000 copies of her autobiography, and numerous copies of her third fitness DVD. She is getting around £700,000 for the exclusive wedding pictures from OK Magazine - and there are rumours of even bigger fish on Max Clifford's line waiting to be hauled in if she is up to it.

Jade is reported not to have spoken to her two boys, Bobby (5) and Freddy (4), about the cancer that has spread to her liver, bowel and groin. If this fact is true, she certainly has her own agenda for it. But Jade does have to face her final curtain soon, and this will take all the courage she can muster in the face of diminishing strength and utter dependency on others.

To help herself come to terms with her impending demise, Jade is working with a faith healer to clear her bad energy, and life coach, Sue Stone, who says Jade has started reading the Bible. Jade has also brought in specialist grief counsellors to assist her to be able to explain to her children what is going to happen.

In order to earn even more money for the boys she cherishes, Jade is keeping a secret, personal diary of her illness which will be published after her death.

But before the last flower in her funeral cortège dies, Jade will have faced the ultimate test of her courage - and Max Clifford's office will have drained the last glass of celebration champagne in her honour. There is no question that Max Clifford and Jade Goody will have made a good deal of money from the publicity that his company has generated for her.

But that aside, Max Clifford is the perfect person to be there to comfort Jade in the privacy of her hospital bedroom, when the light starts to dim and she cannot find the strength to cuddle her two boys close to her any longer; for he was also born into a poor family, the youngest of four children. Max's father was a gambler and alcoholic who was frequently unemployed.

Max left school at fifteen with no qualifications and within four months of starting, was sacked from his first job in Elys Department Store in Wimbledon. After working in newspapers for several years, he too, got a lucky break working for EMI in the press office. As he was the only trained journalist there, he was given the job of promoting an unknown - and apparently unwanted - pop group called 'The Beatles', who were touring the US at that time.

From there Max eventually found himself with Chris Hutchins' PR agency, where through association with Harold Davidson, the impressario, he rubbed shoulders with stars of stage and screen - including Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland.

When the head of Chris Hutchins' agency, Syd Gillingham, decided to retire in 1970, Max Clifford opened his own agency, He was then just 27 - which was considered pretty young to move in top circles as a publicist in those days.

His popularity grew, and in 1986 he masterminded a publicity stunt for Freddie Starr. The Sun newspaper carried the now famous headline: 'FREDDIE STARR ATE MY HAMSTER'. This outrageous story catapulted Max Clifford to fame.

Big names seeking publicity started to knock loudly on his door - including a brothel 'madam' who was to bring him wealth through a prostitute named Pamella Bordes. The headline that did it this time was: 'CALL GIRL WORKS IN COMMONS'. It involved Conservative Sports Minister Colin Moynihan, billionaire arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi, Andrew Neil and Donald Trelford - and it's alleged that Max Clifford leaked information to The News of the World to serve his own ends.

Max soon found himself in a world of sleaze, protecting gay footballers from press intrusion, and exposing stories to get the Labour Party into power. Jeffrey Archer has no reason to befriend him either, as Max exposed Archer's perjury in 1980 which sent him to goal.

But he was instrumental in getting Tracey Temple more than £100,000 from the Mail on Sunday for telling all about her affair with John Prescott. Fearless as ever, in 2006 Max announced he was going to expose politicians who failed to abide by the standards expected of them in public office. He himself received death threats over the Stephen Lawrence affair, and when he got involved with the O.J. Simpson trial.

Max Clifford makes no bones about his animosity towards rival publicist Simon Fuller - or his belief that appearing on a reality TV show, flaunting your body or being abysmal on a talent show, is a sure way to fame and fortune. These thoughts may have emanated from the discreet weekly adult sex parties he ran for his friends and clients in South London during the late 1970's and early 1980's.

At the age of 46, Max developed epilepsy as a result of early life brain scarring and was banned from driving for eighteen months.

Maybe it was these similarities between their lives that drew Jade Goody and Max Clifford together, and cemented the close platonic bond that exists between them. Of course, the sad death of Max Clifford's wife, Elizabeth, from lung cancer in 2003 - and the fact that Max himself was found to have prostrate cancer in 2008 - strengthens this bond considerably.

It's easy to see that Jade Goody has a quicksilver mind, easily grasping new ideas with great dexterity. Max Clifford is also agile, highly motivated and fearless. Jade is hungrily seeking the ideal life for herself, but her upbringing and character prevent her from finding it.

Now she is running out of the resources to continue her journey, she'll need Max Clifford's steadfastness and gallantry to counteract her own short temper, restlessness and aggressiveness - which is nothing but a reaction to boredom.

Whatever else has come out of The Jade Goody / Max Clifford Affair is left to each one of us to decide. Small business owners may relate her life to the words of Theo Paphitis who, when commenting on the credit crunch, said: "When this crisis started, they (the Government) didn't know what to do. They never thought it would be as deep as it is at the moment. And they are making it up as they go along. But nobody is prepared to say 'We don't have a blueprint. We're trying to react to everything we are discovering as we go along.' "

I think when Jade Goody was accused of making racist remarks to Shilpa Shetty, her personal 'crisis' started, and she didn't know where it would take her because she simply didn't have a blueprint for it.

The Jade Goody / Max Clifford Affair demonstrates clearly the difference between marketing and Referral Marketing. Max Clifford has done a Referral Marketing operation by building credibility and using tactics that are designed to attract new customers. I didn’t say it very clearly at the time, I was crying, in the middle of a mental health crisis. I did have the presence of mind to add “Here, in the Job Centre, not ‘here’ at all, I’m not suicidal.”, which is possibly the sort of thing a suicidal person might say. Then, when I’d been verified as a human resident of the UK, with a full working life to date of National Insurance contributions, I said it again, to my new ‘Work Coach’ “I’m not suicidal, you don’t have to risk-assess me, I’m ASIST trained.” “Oh, I’ve done that course, too, horrible, isn’t it?” (Job Centre frontline staff are trained to recognise and respond to suicidal ideation or intent. ‘Let that sink in.’, as the young people say.) She didn’t risk-assess me, she did say “Oh, don’t cry, you’ll set me off!”, which was possibly her way of showing me she was a human being, or possibly a tactic to divert-minimise the obvious distress I was experiencing.

Distress which may or may not have invalidated my capacity to consent to the Claimant Commitment she had me sign. It wasn’t an informed consent, in any case “You need to sign this, or your claim will be delayed.” isn’t actually threatening, but it felt that way at the time. “You need to attend this course.” Right, OK, fine, I know where that place is, and how to get there on the bus, and it’s a morning appointment, so there’s less risk of me turning up during an episode of brain fog, I can do it. I did it, and, to my shame, I realised how different I was to the other claimants. In my postcode, Universal Credit was being introduced to ‘Single adults, no dependent children’ making new unemployment claims. “Have you all done a CV?” “You need to do a CV.” “Have you all registered on UJ?” “You need to register on UJ.” Ten new claimants, two bouncy-enthusiastic Work Coaches, who kept looking at the clock, and the door, the course was supposed to last an hour, but there was a scheduled bomb evacuation drill half way through. (The Coaches hadn’t checked if anyone would need assistance during an evacuation, or advised us that we should take all bags and belongings out with us- that’s a bit of my superiority complex leaking out, one of my old roles was writing risk assessments.) One of the men didn’t have ‘a computer’, one of the women had tried to phone ‘the helpline’ and spent so long on hold that she’d used up all of her mobile credit. “Oh, you can pop into the Job Centre to do that!” We were hopeless/dejected/terrified, nobody wants to exist in that state, and that’s what Universal Credit relies on, that the most-functional will adopt an attitude of “Sod this for a game of soldiers.”, and find work, any work, just to get out of the system. “If you find work, your UC claim will be held open for 6 months.” They know that some people will drift into insecure temporary employment, zero-hours, dubious jobs, because anything at all is better than the absolute anxiety and pervasive paranoia of UC. 

The ‘waiting period’, the assumption that every new claimant will have their last month’s wage from work still to come. My contract ended in March, I’d tried finding a job myself all the way through April, and then realised that what I had left in the bank was all I had in the world, swallowed my pride, and ‘signed on’ for the first time in my life. Electronic application, phone-call with an appointment time-and-date, and the list of ID to produce, then the face-to-face at the Job Centre. If you don’t have the ‘right’ ID, your claim won’t be processed. I’ve never held a passport, and I only had the ‘short’ birth certificate, when they specify the ‘full’ one, I think I only slipped through because the admin-lady didn’t want me snot-crying all over her desk. I started the application process at the beginning of May, and wasn’t ‘paid’ until half way through July. The ‘five week’ period, if you read the forms properly, is actually seven, there’s the ID-check appointment required to activate your claim, the first week of your claim doesn’t count, and then there’s vague waffle about ‘allow an extra week for payment’. I allowed the seven weeks, and then another one, just to make sure, then I phoned the helpline. “Oh, did you claim Housing Element?” “I don’t know, I don’t know how any of this works.” (As it turns out, nobody knows how it works, because it doesn’t work.) “Right, well I can see on here that you did, and there’s a problem.” (If you can see that I did, why did you ask if I had?) I’d had to provide a copy of my tenancy agreement, I didn’t have it at the first appointment, so had brought it to the second one. My Work Coach had posted it off, someone in ‘Housing’ had noted that my ex was named on it, and put it in a drawer. Really. “I can authorise your Standard Element today, but your Housing Element will need to go to a manager, it’s a two-day task, don’t phone back before the two days are up.” “Right, OK, can you tell me how much it is?” “Your Standard Element is £317.” (A month, I used to earn that a week.) “Can you tell me how much the Housing Element is, so I know how short I’m going to be for my rent?” “No, I don’t do Housing. If it is short, you can apply for Discretionary Housing Payments, but I think you have to pay them back” (Discretionary Housing Payments, if allowed, are made by the local authority, not DWP, and you don’t have to pay them back.) Splendid. She did authorise the £317, but she didn’t forward the message to the Housing department. I phoned back after the 2 days, and a very apologetic young man confirmed that the task had been noted but not actioned. Another two days, and I spoke to a Housing manager. “Can you give me your ex’s contact details, so we can verify that you’re at separate addresses?” Hell, no. I’m not escaping DV, or in any situation where him being contacted would place me at risk of harm, some people will be, I just didn’t want the shame-factor of him knowing I was unemployed. I gave her his NI number, 20 seconds later she’d cross-referenced with HMRC, and rubber-stamped the Housing Element. (Which was £150 a month short of my actual rent.) 10 weeks, not ‘five’ or ‘six’ for the first payment, and it was only activated because I chased it, some people won’t be able to do that. 

For almost a year, I kept-on-clicking, my Work Coach steadily reduced the number of hours per week I was expected to use for work search, because I was also in the process of applying for PIP disability benefit, and that’s  job in itself. ‘Rolling six existing benefits into one’ looks great on paper, but there’s still fragmentation in the system. There is no ESA, ‘employment support allowance’ component in the UC system, it’s now termed ‘Limited Capacity for Work’, and, from my experience, the Job Centre just sort of cut you loose. (And wait for you to start moonlighting as a pole-dancer or something, probably.)  However genuine and human the Work Coaches are, they’re not supposed to show you how to get around the system much more than is required to tick boxes. I’d told my Work Coach repeatedly that I had disabilities, and she’d seen the deterioration in my mental health over the months, I was disintegrating in front of her, which can’t have been comfortable to watch. Still, she watched, because she wasn’t allowed to ‘give’ me the get-out-of-jail card. When my PIP application was declined, I appealed as-per-protocol, through the Mandatory Reconsideration process, pointing out to the Coach that any system with a ‘mandatory’ reconsideration written into it knows that it’s flawed. 

My Mandatory Reconsideration request was processed, and the PIP was still not-awarded, that’s a deliberate tactic within these policies, people who ‘could’ manage without assistance drop out of the system. I know that, because the first time I applied, after the life-altering brain haemorrhage, I thought I could manage, as it turned out, I couldn’t. The next stage of the process is a Tribunal, people with disabilities have to go to court, and justify themselves to a Judge, a Doctor, and a Lay-person specialising in disabilities. (That’s where ‘Daniel Blake’ would have ended up, if he hadn’t died.) I requested a Tribunal, and provided additional evidence, as well as completely eviscerating the cut-and-paste mess that ATOS had made of my ‘reports.’ That was difficult, not just the process of reading through 300+ pages of my evidence, and their evidence, but the continual repetition of what I can’t do any more. I had the Job Centre on one side, encouraging the ‘positive, can-do attitude’, and PIP/ATOS on the other side, asking for profoundly embarrassing details on washing/dressing/toileting difficulties. It was a waiting game, I’d applied for PIP in March 2017, I didn’t have my Tribunal until July 2018, the same week as my re-scheduled ‘Work Capability Assessment’. (They cancelled the first one with less than 24 hours notice, they hadn’t sent the ‘reminder’ text, they had no intention of holding it, these systems have made me paranoid.)

The Work Coach could have triggered the Work Capability Assessment at my first appointment. She didn’t, she waited for me to ask for a process that I wasn’t aware of. She watched me fall apart, and try to keep fighting through systems that just don’t work. It’s only my inherent resilience that have saved her some paperwork, or possibly just closing the file, and marking it ‘deceased’. She offered food bank vouchers, and suggested I ‘do something’, but couldn’t tell me what the ‘something’ should be, so I joked about falling over in Tesco and making a claim for compensation. I cancelled my utilities direct debits, and made claims to hardship funds, keeping in regular contact with the suppliers, to update them on the lack-of-progress on the PIP front. For a fair while, I was surviving on one can of value-range soup a day, split into three ‘meals’. Some days I didn’t eat at all, because once my rent and phone/broadband were paid for, I had £18 per month for everything else. In the spring of 2018, I had five hospital visits in one month, the bus-fare is £5, I cried my eyes out filling in the refund form in the hospital. After pulling up dandelions from my garden to eat, because I couldn’t afford fresh vegetables, I dug up big patches of the garden to plant veg, and a beautiful soul from Twitter sent me a packet of seeds in the post. (I also ‘allowed’ the ex to buy me a plastic greenhouse, which kept blowing over, it was more garden canes and gaffa-tape by the end, thank you to another kind soul, for sending me repair materials, and also the kind soul who sent me the money to cover my Microsoft Office payment, so I could still make my rent.) I was completely insane, hanging on by my fingernails, and that’s what Universal Credit does to people. It isn’t enough to live on, no matter how much you pare back on unnecessary expenses, every single day is Just-Survive-Somehow.

The media demonisation of benefit claimants hasn’t helped. I’m not sitting at home ordering take-away and watching a massive telly, like those people in the programmes ‘normal’ people watch on their, erm, massive telly. I have complex long-term medical conditions that I haven’t been able to address while I’ve been treading water through the PIP and UC systems, imagine that, the welfare system has exacerbated my medical issues. I have guilt issues, I know I’m not the most-disabled person in the UK, and I know that some people quite simply do not make it through these systems. Is it 10 people a week that die after being found fit-for-work? There was a woman a week or so ago on the HealthUnlocked forum, who had been declined disability benefits, and, instead of appealing, had taken the ‘balls to you, DWP, I can do this!’ stance. Very, very dangerous, because the work capability and PIP assessments are very much focused on the physical, rather than cognitive capacity. If you can complete an arbitrary range of physical activities, and a very small and skewed range of ‘mental capacity’ tests, you’re good-to-go. People are being declared fit-for-work when they really aren’t, that’s not just conscious cruelty, it’s placing people at risk of significant harm. Mental Health conditions fall straight through the system, and individuals ARE being fined for ticking the wrong box on prescriptions. Imagine needing medication to manage a mental health condition to keep yourself functional, and then being slapped with a £100 fine? That’s next month’s medication not happening, followed by the inevitable sanction from the Job Centre when you miss an appointment, or fail to engage appropriately? 

Amber Rudd has stated that the roll-out of UC is to be paused, acknowledging that there are faults in the system that need to be addressed. How utterly hypocritical. My initial reaction to that was “Maybe they’ve achieved their kill-quota.” Fit-for-work people will work, but people who are not fit for work will fall foul of these vile systems BECAUSE they’re unfit. I’ve managed not to miss any appointments, and to maintain my contractual obligations regarding work-preparation. I’ve wrecked my credit rating and mental health in the process. Pausing the roll-out will prevent new claimants being pulled into the vortex, but Job Centres are already removing the legacy systems from their work-stations, there’s no real intention of stopping this thing.

I don’t want to be unemployed, and I have no intention of thinking “Right, that’s it, I’m disabled, I can just sit back and live on benefits.”, that’s not in my nature. What I’m doing is waiting for medical interventions that I should have had years ago, to make me as safe and functional as I can be, before I slip back into the real world. What UC systems wanted me to do was throw myself headfirst into the first halfway suitable job I found, to remove me from unemployment statistics. Not on my watch, DWP, ‘up to 48 hours’ at minimum wage virtually guarantees a cognitive lapse, which would be a risk of significant harm. I won’t place other people at risk due to my own known deficits, the government aren’t showing UC claimants the same consideration.

My bf was in an accident recently where he was rear ended at a stop light. The other driver was ticketed and no one is contesting the fact that the other driver is at fault. My boyfriend is not listed on my insurance because he has a company vehicle that his boss lets him drive. Anyway today he decided to take my car to go pick up our daughter from school. Stephen King on Donald Trump: How do such men rise? First as a joke

Hes written novels with eerily similar plotlines but how did Trump become president? The only way to find out: inject a panel of fictional voters with truth serum…

I started thinking Donald Trump might win the presidency in September of 2016. By the end of October, I was almost sure. Thus, when the election night upset happened, I was dismayed, but not particularly surprised. I didnt even think it was much of an upset, in spite of the Huffington Post aggregate poll, which gave Hillary Clinton a 98% chance of winning an example of wishful thinking if ever there were one.

Some of my belief arose from the signage I was seeing. Im from northern New England, and in the run-up to the election I saw hundreds of Trump-Pence signs and bumper stickers, but almost none for Clinton-Kaine. To me this didnt mean there were no Clinton supporters in the houses I passed or the cars ahead of me on Route 302; what it did seem to mean was that the Clinton supporters werent particularly invested. This was not the case with the Trump people, who tended to have billboard-sized signage in their yards and sometimes two stickers on their cars (TRUMP-PENCE on the left; HILLARY IS A CRIMINAL on the right).

Brexit also troubled me. Most of the commentators brushed its importance aside, saying that the issue of whether or not Britain should leave the EU was very different from that of who should become the American president, and besides, British and American voters were very different animals. I agreed with neither assessment, because there was a vibe in the air during most of 2016, a feeling that people were both frightened of the status quo and sick of it. Voters saw a vast and overloaded apple cart lumbering past them. They wanted to upset the motherfucker, and would worry about picking up those spilled apples later. Or just leave them to rot.

Clinton voters were convinced shed win, even if they saw her as a ho-hum candidate at best. Many did not even bother going to the polls, which was a large (and largely unstated) factor in her loss. Trump voters, on the other hand, could not wait to pull those levers. They didnt just want change; they wanted a man on horseback. Trump filled the bill.

I had written about such men before. In The Dead Zone, Greg Stillson is a door-to-door Bible salesman with a gift of gab, a ready wit and the common touch. He is laughed at when he runs for mayor in his small New England town, but he wins. He is laughed at when he runs for the House of Representatives (part of his platform is a promise to rocket Americas trash into outer space), but he wins again. When Johnny Smith, the novels precognitive hero, shakes his hand, he realizes that some day Stillson is going to laugh and joke his way into the White House, where he will start world war three.

Big Jim Rennie in Under The Dome is cut from the same cloth. Hes a car salesman (selling being a key requirement for the successful politician), who is the head selectman in the small town of Chesters Mill, when a dome comes down and cuts the community off from the world. Hes a crook, a cozener and a sociopath, the worst possible choice in a time of crisis, but hes got a folksy, straight-from-the-shoulder delivery that people relate to. The fact that hes incompetent at best and downright malevolent at worst doesnt matter.

Both these stories were written years ago, but Stillson and Rennie bear enough of a resemblance to the current resident of the White House for me to flatter myself I have a country-fair understanding of how such men rise: first as a joke, then as a viable alternative to the status quo, and finally as elected officials who are headstrong, self-centered and inexperienced. Such men do not succeed to high office often, but when they do, the times are always troubled, the candidates in question charismatic, their proposed solutions to complex problems simple, straightforward and impractical. The baggage that should weigh these hucksters down becomes magically light, lifting them over the competition like Carl Fredricksen in the Pixar film Up. Trumps negatives didnt drag him down; on the contrary, they helped get him elected.

I decided to convene six Trump voters to discover how and why all this happened. Because I selected them from the scores of make-believe people always bouncing around in my head (sometimes their chatter is enough to drive me bugshit), I felt perfectly OK feeding them powerful truth serum before officially convening the round table. And because they are fictional my creatures they all agreed to this. They gulped the serum down in Snapple iced tea, and half an hour later we began. My panelists were:

Gary Barker, a construction worker from how fitting Gary, Indiana. Gary from Gary is 41, married with two kids, currently unemployed. Graduated high school, never went to college.

William Russell, from Delray Beach, Florida. William spent his working life as a banker in Albany, New York, and is now retired and living in a gated community. The headline that did it this time was: 'CALL GIRL WORKS IN COMMONS'. It involved Conservative Sports Minister Colin Moynihan, billionaire arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi, Andrew Neil and Donald Trelford - and it's alleged that Max Clifford leaked information to The News of the World to serve his own ends.

Max soon found himself in a world of sleaze, protecting gay footballers from press intrusion, and exposing stories to get the Labour Party into power. Jeffrey Archer has no reason to befriend him either, as Max exposed Archer's perjury in 1980 which sent him to goal.

But he was instrumental in getting Tracey Temple more than £100,000 from the Mail on Sunday for telling all about her affair with John Prescott.
