Chapter 5: Arrangements

Aside from a brief stop Rangiku had made to get her disposable cameras developed, the trip back to Soul Society on the last day of their vacation was spent in awkward silence between the two shinigami.

They passed through the Senkaimon back in their uniforms, and after sorting through all their bags, the two parted ways to return to their respective Divisions.  

There had been a long silence as they independently wondered what, if anything, was appropriate to say, before ultimately settling on a hurried farewell.

"Miss me?"

At the sound of Rangiku's bright, cheery greeting, Momo and Nanao looked up from their lunches to find the Tenth Division Lieutenant beaming down at them, bags hanging from the crook of her elbow.

"Ah, welcome back!" Momo replied, scooting over to make room for Rangiku to sit with them, and no sooner had she done so then she passed one bag to each of them.  

"Ta-da!  Fukuoka souvenirs!  I've got pictures too!"  

"I hope you didn't spend a lot on these," Nanao sighed with a slight furrowing of her eyebrows.  "I appreciate the gesture, but you should be more careful with what money you have."  

"It's fine, it's fine!" Rangiku smiled. "So, tell me about the wedding!  What'd I miss?"  Apparently quite proud of the key role she'd played in coordinating a considerable deal of the planning, Nanao adjusted her glasses and quickly replied.

"Ah, well it's really a shame you weren't there-- everything turned out perfectly.  The fireworks display at the reception was stunning, the spread was excellently made, the brides were quite lovely in a pair of matching tuxedos--"

"Nanao flirted with Lisa..."

Cut off by Momo, giving a rare impish smirk from behind her drink, Nanao turned beet red, and Rangiku blinked as her jaw fell open, an amused half-smile forming on her face.

"WHAT???"

"U-uhhhhh it... well, it really wasn't what you'd c-call 'flirting' I'd say--"

"Nanao drank too much champagne and walked right up to Captain Yadomaru and just... she had so many terrible pick-up lines.  It was amazing."

"Oh I made such an idiot of myself," Nanao groaned, letting her forehead land on the table with a thud.  "She's never going to talk to me again after that..."

"Now now, it was pretty cute.  She did dance with you, didn't she?"

"Wow-- of all the times to be away!" Rangiku laughed.

"A-anyway, enough about all that," Nanao declared, adjusting her glasses and trying to hide her blush.  "What about you?"

"Oh, you know I've been to Fukuoka a million times.  Still, it's always nice to see the city, visit the castle..."

"You know what I mean.  How was--" pausing, Nanao's eyes flitted back and forth, as if worried someone might overhear, before she leaned in and finished her question. "...How was Captain Soifon?"

Rangiku blinked, looking briefly confused before Nanao elaborated.

"She wasn't too hard to be around, was she?"

"Oh. OH! Uh, well, she was..." Rangiku trailed off, as if distracted, the briefest flash of a far-off look on her face.

"...She was great."

For a moment, Nanao and Momo continued eating before Rangiku's actual words registered, and almost as one they both stared at her in astonishment.

"...Wow, really?" Momo asked, surprised but a bit skeptical; Nanao far less ready to take her friend at face-value.

"Rangiku, you know she isn't here right?  You can speak your mind with us."

"No, I'm serious!  I mean, yes, she wasn't exactly... the easiest person to be around in the beginning but... after the first few days she loosened up and... we had a really good time.  It's funny, she really wasn't what I expected."

The two of them just continued to stare at her in open disbelief while Rangiku appeared unfazed, but moments later the awkward silence was broken by the appearance of Rangiku's Captain.

"So there you are, Matsumoto," Toshiro Hitsugaya announced with his usual somber tone, arms crossed and looking rather intimidating despite being a good two feet or so shorter than his towering Lieutenant.

"Ahh!  Good to see you again, Captain!  I just got back and was just on my way to see you at Headquarters--"

"Oh, you mean the Headquarters that's three Divisions in the opposite direction from the Senkaimon?" Rangiku flinched as she was caught in her fib, and Toshiro pressed on.  "Do you have any idea how many stacks of forms have piled up while you've been on your little 'vacation?'"

"...Zero?"

"Why don't you follow me back to your desk and you can see for yourself," he replied flatly, and knowing she was out of excuses, Rangiku promptly headed off behind him, waving back at Momo and Nanao as she left.

"...Do you really think she actually had fun with Captain Soifon?" Momo finally asked, and Nanao was quick to reply.

"Oh, there's no way they'd have gotten along for a whole day, let alone a week.  It must have been so awful she feels like she has to downplay it, poor thing."

"I suppose," Momo shrugged as she went back to her food.

"Alright, one more set!  Every single one of you should be looking to improve your flash-step timing!"

Marechiyo Omaeda, the Second Division Lieutenant, stared down at the rows of shinigami clad head to toe in black keikogi uniforms as they continued their grueling training.  Though naturally large and strong and imposing, the snack-loving giant wasn't exactly the most intimidating of individuals (especially compared to his Captain), but he hadn't earned his position for nothing, and when it came down to it he could project authority when he needed to.  

"I see things haven't completely fallen apart in my absence, Omaeda."

For his somewhat relaxed demeanor mere seconds ago, the sudden arrival of Captain Soifon right behind him still managed to make him jump, right before shifting immediately back to full attention.  

"O-Oh, Captain!  N-no, of course not!  It's good to see you and I hope your vacation was--"

"Save it," Soifon cut him off, tone neutral and face unimpressed as usual.  If she'd actually been relaxed at any point during her leave of absence, she had shifted right back into her normal strict demeanor like she'd never left.  "Follow me into the office.  I'd like to hear what you've been doing as acting Captain."

"R-r-right," Omaeda nodded furiously, doing his best to stay at his boss' pace as she headed through the door to the Second Division Headquarters.  "The Punishment Corps has been working on extending the speed and range of Flash-stepping, and patrols have all been quiet."

"And the prison?"

"No problems."

"I see." As they approached her desk, she quirked an eyebrow silently upon finding a neatly arranged stack of forms on the Outgoing tray, all apparently filled out correctly, and began leafing through them.  "...You've stayed on top of the paperwork."

"Oh, well Captain, I figured since you've never taken time off, the least I could do was make sure everything was taken care of when you got back.  Especially with the--"

Catching himself, Omaeda awkwardly clapped a hand over his mouth, but Soifon turned to glare at him, instantly suspicious.

"...With the what?"

"Er... well...y-you know, the... wedding?" He said the last word in barely a squeak, as if afraid to utter a curse, his teeth gritted in preparation for a furious response from Soifon.

"...Oh.  Yes, that's right." The Captain, suprisingly, had looked genuinely confused for a second.  "To be honest, I'd forgotten about it."

Omaeda stared at her, hardly able to believe it.  Her crush on Yoruichi had been no secret, and indeed had cost him quite a few punches and bruises in some of her more irritable moments.  The idea that it would have actually slipped her mind?  It seemed impossible, but then pushing her about it probably wasn't in his best interests either.

"Well, I have to admit, Lieutenant," she finally spoke up, reorganizing the stack of papers as she put them back, "... it seems you did just fine on your own this week.  You can take the rest of the day off, if you'd like."

"Wh-what?!" Omaeda stuttered, now even more bewildered. "Are-- um... I mean, if you're sure, Captain..."

"Quite sure," Soifon replied evenly.  "I want to run the Punishment Corps through advanced kido and get back up to speed as quickly as possible, so we can all be on the same page by tomorrow.  Speaking of which, I'll expect you on time, as usual."  With that, the Captain departed, leaving Omaeda scratching his head.

Long after most of the Seireitei had finished their work and gone home for the night, there were a handful of offices one could reasonably expect to have a light or two on well into the night, and the Second Division was almost always one of them.

Even with Omaeda having taken care of what she'd missed over the week, there was always, always more paperwork to be done, and Soifon was at her desk, meticulously dealing with forms and charts and requests at her usual efficient pace so they'd be turned in before midnight.

Or at least, she was trying to.

Training her Division members, inspecting the barracks and making a  walkthrough of the Great Central Underground Prison had all kept her busy, distracted.  But with a big empty Headquarters all to herself and a plethora of bland reading to finish, her thoughts inevitably wandered.

Mostly, she found herself thinking about Rangiku, and specifically about their last three days at the hotel.  

They'd barely left the room after that night in the onsen, left the bed even less.  Just a long blur of hands and lips and sighs and skin, punctuated by room service and the occasional half-hearted insistence that they were done and had gotten carried away before everything repeated.  

It had been so... impulsive, and wild, and passionate, and the more Soifon thought about it the less real it seemed.  It was hardly something she would have given in to normally, and yet...

There was a sudden knock at the door, and shaken out of her thoughts, Soifon's pen hand slipped and left a broad black mark across one of the forms.  Shaking her head, she collected herself before she spoke, not even registering that it was very unusual for someone else to be at Second Division this late at night.

"Come in."

the door slid open, and looking up she found none other than Rangiku, waving at her with an easy smile.

"I thought I'd find you here."

As if seeing her for the first time, Soifon noticed the curve of her neck, the locks of golden-red hair settled on her shoulder.  She recovered her attitude of nonchalance quickly however, and if Rangiku noticed the long look she gave her she didn't give it away.

"I-I'm working, Lieutenant," Soifon replied, turning her eyes down at the paper, trying to look as if she found its contents very interesting even if with a big ink line through it some of the words were unintelligible.  "I trust you must have plenty to catch up on as well."

"Not really," Rangiku shrugged, and Soifon truly doubted that but said nothing.

"Well... did you need something?"

"Nah, just hanging out."  With that, Rangiku threw herself onto the nearby couch, her arm hanging over the back as she looked over at Soifon, hand cradling her face.  "You don't mind, right?"

"...Do as you wish."

Rangiku just smiled at her with a hint of a playful twinkle in her eye, and for just a moment Soifon's breath caught, and she redoubled the attempt to bury herself in her paperwork.  She covered her face with one hand, putting on an air of deep thought even as she hoped the low light of her lamp would disguise her sudden blush.  

Honestly, that smile was quite dangerous.  Years of working with that woman and it was a wonder she hadn't realized it until now.

For a few minutes there was silence, and it seemed that Rangiku was, indeed, simply lazing about to avoid her own overdue work, though the sense that she was just... quietly watching her made focusing difficult.  Still, she was making progress, wrapping up the last of it, when--

"'Oooh, Matsumoto, right there... that feels so good, don't stop...'"

At that Soifon looked up, face now clearly red all the way to her ears, her mouth open in some vague attempt at a reply, but Rangiku just giggled as she smirked at her, and whatever she'd been attempting to say just collapsed into pieces.

Again, dangerous.

"Wh-wh-what are you actually doing here?!  Besides," she managed after what seemed like minutes of her mouth flapping uselessly, "...you're one to talk."

Rangiku's laughter echoed in the otherwise empty room for a moment longer, before she calmed down, and gave Soifon a surprisingly warm look, her blue eyes soft and almost wistful.

"You know what? Fair enough.  As to what I'm doing here... I was thinking earlier.  We had fun, didn't we?"

For a moment Soifon didn't answer, just fiddled idly with her pen while refusing to make eye contact.

"... Well, I don't know if--"

"You can put up the ‘proud indifferent Captain’ act all you want, but you can't fool me.  I can tell you were thinking about it."  There was a definite note of pride in Rangiku's voice, and after composing herself, Soifon finally looked at her.

"If this was just... some way of tricking me, I really don't appreciate it.  I definitely don't need your pity, Lieutenant."

"Oh, give me a little credit," Rangiku huffed as she got up from the couch and planted her hands on her hips defiantly.  "I wasn't lying when I said you were attractive, and believe me, if I’d wanted to stop you I would have done it long before.  If there's one of us with no patience for pity sex, it's me."

At that, Rangiku gave a long sigh, and running her hand along the back of her neck she looked unusually pensive.

"The thing is, that definitely wasn't the direction I expected the week to go, but... you were great, and it's... been a long time since I've enjoyed myself that much.  And I thought, you know, if you were interested... we don't necessarily have to stop."

There was a stretch of silence as Soifon processed Rangiku's implication, and at first all she could do was stare in complete disbelief.  

She had never really considered herself particularly beautiful, nor had it ever been a priority.  And yet one of Soul Society's most gorgeous women not only seemed to be attracted to her, but was actually proposing a sexual relationship of all things.  It sounded... surreal, absurd even.

And yet, it was hard to deny that some part of her immediately wanted to agree.  Rangiku had always been lovely and glamourous and cheerful, certainly no one would argue that, but it had been so easy to overlook when her thoughts had been focused entirely on Yoruichi.  Now, though, having been intimate with her, it was... quite the opposite, especially with her so close, right at this minute.  

"I... I'm not... sure..."

She had looked down, embarrassed, at her hands, not noticing that Rangiku had closed the distance between them until she had pushed the stack of documents aside, and sat on her desk directly in front of her.  She felt fingertips under her chin, gently but insistently urging her to look up, and the look on Rangiku's own face as their eyes really met for the first time that night, it was...

Soifon felt herself swallow, transfixed.

"It doesn't have to be anything so serious, you know," Rangiku said softly, her smile warm but playful.  "...nothing permanent.  Just us, enjoying ourselves.  It'll be fun."

Soifon felt her eyes drift down, catching the flicker of light against the silver chain at her neck, vanishing between the cleft of her breasts, back up to her soft pink lips and the curtain of red-blonde hair sweeping over her shoulders.

"Well... fun doesn't sound so bad," Soifon managed, and never letting go of her chin, Rangiku craned her head down and kissed her.

If Soifon had been having trouble forming a coherent thought before, it was near impossible now.  She felt Rangiku's tongue, teasing at the edge of her lips, and just as she began to kiss her back, Rangiku leaned back, gazing at Soifon intently with darkened blue eyes.

"M...maybe we can... l-later," the Captain offered half-heartedly, head swimming as she dimly held onto her pen.  "I...I really have to finish these papers for t-tomorrow, and a-as Captain, I have to set an... an..."

Rangiku wasn't listening, just steadily laying a row of kisses back to her earlobe, and her methodical nibbling effectively robbed Soifon of any further thought, her words trailing off into a string of low, soft moans.

The next morning in First Division, Nanao was diligently sorting through the previous day's files and forms for the fourth time, genuinely puzzled.

Even for all her effort to streamline the bureaucratic functions of the Seireitei from her more prominent position, punctuality was still a suggestion for most of the Thirteen Divisions.  She'd come to expect late results from Tenth, and Eleventh was a pipe dream, but Second Division?  That was practically unheard of.

She thought about a fifth recount before the door to her office opened, and none other than the Second Division Captain herself rushed in, carrying a tall stack of papers, and she sighed with relief.

"Ah, Captain Soifon.  I was beginning to wonder if there was a-- clerical... error..."

Nanao stared, mouth ajar, at the Captain, certain her eyes were decieving her.  She'd seen Soifon beaten and battle-ragged before, but... well, there was no other way to put it other than she looked like a mess.  There were deep bags lining unusually unfocused eyes-- a long night for Soifon was no surprise-- but her uniform was pulled and disheveled, and her hair had matted on one side like she'd fallen asleep on her desk.

"...Lieutenant Ise.  Forgive me.  I... took longer with yesterday's documentation than I--" her words cut off as she covered her mouth, her face scrunching up as if she was doing her best to suppress a yawn and doing a bad job of it, before she managed to finish her sentence.  "...Than I anticipated."

"Uh... Don't worry about it, Captain," Nanao said uncertainly, completely at a loss of what to make of the woman before her who was so often the very model of discipline. "...Everyone has an off-day, right?"

"Mmmn," came Soifon's carefully measured reply.  She rubbed her neck absentmindedly, and for a moment Nanao could swear she saw what looked like a bruise or two just barely covered by her Captain's coat.

"...Anyway, I should, um... I should go.  Training and... something..."

She turned (more like stumbled, really) and left, and Nanao just stared at the space where she'd been like she'd hallucinated the most absurd fantasy dream sequence in the world.

Maybe some people didn't take vacations because they didn't function well after them, if Soifon was any indication.

The case is complicated and it is about my car insurance. I misinformed my insurance company about my NCD. As a result they cancelled my policy. The problem is that before they cancelled it I had a claim. My car was not damage at all but the other guy had a few scratches on the bumper and he reported the incident. My insurance company informed me; they would cancel the policy and return all the payments I made so far. They would cover the cost of the damage to another guy, but I have to repay all the cost they bear.
