no one can stop you from saying "San Fran," but please know that every time a Californian reads it they take 50pts of psychic damage
#posts I created#you can call it SF or San Francisco#but not San Fran or Frisco#that's deranged#(also Frisco is a city in Texas)#no one who has lived here for longer than a month would ever ever say that#like again I can't stop you. but I can block you#if you are writing something that takes place in CA#and someone who lives in CA says that I will close your story and never finish reading it#if you live in the Bay Area you might call SF 'the city'#you *might* call Oakland 'the town' but it's not likely in my experience YMMV#mostly we just say. San Francisco. Oakland. Berkeley. Marin. etc#on the other hand if you want to signal or shorthand 'tourist'#then sure have a character say it#(I will still take 50pts psychic damage though 😅)#PS: Otis Redding is the one exception#Otis Redding you're amazing and can call SF whatever you want#Otis Redding I miss you

Continuação pt 2
SÃO FRANCISCO
Ficámos um total de 5 dias na Golden City, San Fran, the City by the Bay, Frisco, the Paris of the West, com todas as alcunhas ao nível desta cidade bem cool.
Lu e Kiko

Random Death Island thoughts as I was watching (some spoilers obvi):
- One minute in: "SAN FRAN? FRISCO??? NO ONE CALLS IT THAT"
- Facial expressions are kind of dead :(
- Otherwise Leon looks great as always!
- From what I read on his Twitter, it sounds like this is Matthew Mercer's last Leon project? Love him but being a newer RE fan, Nick Apostolides was my first intro to Leon - so I'm excited to (hopefully) see him in the role again in the future (speaking of, he was nominated for a Horror Game Award for RE4R and people can vote!)
- My brain trying to figure out the whole RE universe timeline when all the characters have aged differently and I haven't finished all of the games: 😵💫
- So this takes place after Vendetta? At least Leon looks better/healthier now?
- "We're all dying, how can you be so calm?" "We got Jill" 😭
- "Hey! Uglyy!"???? What kind of writing is this
- Knew it wasn't going to happen, but I was hoping for a Carlos appearance or even just a reference
I wasn't really expecting much but I think it temporarily satisfied my Leon thirst at least 😅 and I guess my money is a good way of telling Capcom, "I like these characters, more please?"
And thoughts from some of the iTunes extras..
“If [RE3R] is what the fans think Jill looks like, then naturally we had to make her look similar in the movie. … In Jill’s character design, because of her exposure to the virus, she ages slower than a normal human. To follow that idea accurately, if you consider that background, her appearance wouldn’t have changed very much because the movie takes place a few years after RE3. I don’t think it’s wrong to assume that. And instead of making her look a certain way, we wanted the viewers to immediately recognize that it was Jill, so we settled on her current design.”
But she doesn’t need to be wearing almost the exact same clothes for people to be able to recognize her?? And yeah they say they greyed her hair a bit and gave her wrinkles, but she even looks kind of younger than before???
Also…

in general, I am a firm believer in the No True Scotsman fallacy, i.e. in that I do believe it is a fallacy and trying to no-true-scotsman someone or something is foolish and rhetorically weak; however-- it is also inarguably and unequivocally true that no Actual Californian would say Cali, much the same way that no Actual San Franciscan in this day and age would say Frisco, or, god forbid, San Fran

San Fran 'stang
I will start this post with an apology to any San Franciscans that may bump into this page. As a repeat visitor to San Francisco and working for a firm (yeah, I have a day job) based in Palo Alto I know how annoying it is for people to refer to it as San Fran or Frisco. However, for the title of this painting it just has a better sound to it… “San Francisco Ford Mustang” won’t ever feature as a…

@lego @legokinrell @lego_buildergs @life_is_lego @lego.iste @legoarchitecturemoc #lego San Francisco (/ˌsæn frənˈsɪskoʊ/; Spanish for "Saint Francis"), officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the commercial, financial, and cultural center of Northern California. The city proper is the fourth most populous in California, with 815,201 residents as of 2021, and covers a land area of 46.9 square miles (121 square kilometers), at the end of the San Francisco Peninsula, making it the second most densely populated large U.S. city after New York City and the fifth most densely populated U.S. county, behind only four of the five New York City boroughs. Among the 91 U.S. cities proper with over 250,000 residents, San Francisco was ranked first by per capita income and sixth by aggregate income as of 2021. Colloquial nicknames for San Francisco include SF, San Fran, The City, Frisco, and Baghdad by the Bay. (at San Francisco, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpEGnGZvT4z/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

only slightly coherent thoughts below
So these are my experiences, corroborated by my mom who grew up in the bay area — slightly different culture but tbh sub/urban california is mostly the same. I know rural cali is Different bc i have passing familiarity with it, but not enough to speak confidently, yk?
Everyone talks about how individualistic US culture is, and like all things, it is dialed up to 11 in LA. There's that post about politeness in ceftain places, and how in big cities like la and nyc, the polite thing is to get your shit and get out. Everyone is pressed for time, so use as little of your fellow human's as possible. That leads to very hyperindividualistic thoughts—don't acknowledge others on the street unless you know them Very Well, don't bother your neighbors, don't impose on anyone, handle it yourself. It's even unintentionally punished to be a team player—if you're not the best on the team, you're not moving up to jv/varsity, even if you're only not the best on the field bc you're being a good Team Player, which encourages self-centered playing—whatever makes *you* look best, regardless of what's actually best for the team. That is a very exploitable thought process, esp for a company like bli who will *happily* fill the void that leaves—don't bother anyone else, just turn to us, we can handle all of your needs, but also compete with your fellow citizens for the best housing, the best tech, the best care. Furthering personal isolation, furthering dependence on the company, furthing.... etc.
there are probably remnants of Valley in the city dialect, esp since Valley was *really* an upper middle/high class dialect before hollywood spread it like a plague. (Hence why it was so prevalent in *hollywood*.) Valley is very degendered—i know there's pushback on dude as a masc term, which is fair and valid, but in the city it was really not a gendered thing. Neither was babe, or bitch. (How often i called boys 'bitch' when they were being bitchy.) Babe for close friends, dude for casual friends and inoffensive strangers, bitch for anyone being an asshole, both (affectionate) and (derogatory). (Is this born in misogyny? Yes probably. We're not here to dissect that.)
The shortening of words to one or two syllables likely also survived—pizza to 'za, san fransisco to san fran or frisco, san diego to dego, the familiarity of nicknames everywhere. (the reason i switched to andi was bc i couldn't outrun my elementary school nick in favor of my 3 syllable given. Best to abandon it altogether.) Full naming things is a sign of either respect or disgust, fully on the delivery, and if you perfect a deadpan, no one can tell which. It's another "Don't take more time than necessary" thing; the quicker you can communicate an idea, the faster you can move on or act on it.
"Like" as a multifunction started here, and most likely survived. (It's a cockroach, not even a nuclear war is gonna kill the multifunctional like.) The terminal uptick probably survived as well, which is not a sign of *questioning* but of *confirming*. It's the Valley equivalent of innit. Sure it's more prevalent among girls, but girls were more likely to be told they're wrong (we're not getting into that here). Continuing the confirmand verbal uptick would probably be a sign of. Respect? Of someone else's position and expertise, to avoid talking over someone who knows better.
all of this together turns into a very isolated, very fast paced, very regimented class society, which sounds *exactly* like something a world-controlling company would encourage. Move out of center city to the slums, maybe the terminal uptick disappears. Further out, words lengthen, even as terminal syllables drop. Further out, more Spanish mixes in, less hyperindividualization. Etc etc. You dont survive the desert as a lone wolf, after all.
Thinking about the very particular culture i grew up in, on the fringes of la county—wildly different from the one i live in now, here in misery—and how that would play into battery city culture
#i can't even say it with a straight face • ooc#& the lights refract sequined stars off her silhouette • center city#hold on to the memories they will hold on to you • headcanon#( i still fucking have a terminal uptick when infodumping )#( it's hard to shake )

April 3rd, 2021
Went to Alcatraz today with my boy! Then got lunch at Pier 39 and looked at sea lions. Touristy as hell lol. Then we went to look around at Paxton Gate, and then chilled at Dolores Park for a bit. It was a good, long day out, been a long time since we’ve done something like this. I’ve been missing the city. Also, I got 20,000 steps!
#tip from a Bay Area local:#don’t ever call it San Fran or frisco or SF#the only acceptable names are San Francisco or the city#otherwise you’ll get a look lol#mine#me#fitblr#fitness#health#healthblr#exercise#San Francisco#Alcatraz#Bay Area
