i'm just re-watching the runaway and was reminded that toph invented insurance fraud before insurance existed
the only thing stopping my girl from making counterfeit coins is the fact that they were made from actual bronze, silver and gold and when you have those there is no point in making the money counterfeit
NOW, the real question is would toph go for mixing in cheaper metals in order to stretch the metal for more coins
Because to me it's too boring for toph
Itās a bit unrealistic how Toph never made any counterfeit coins once she learned to metalbend
#i dont think that toph would have found the rush of adrenaline if she just added a bit of iron to a sliver coin#doesn't seem fun enough#but maybe im not an expert in ranking the fun of crimes#let me reiterate#i never committed a crime officer#but i do belive its not fun enough#toph beifong#headcanon#atla

The Chemicals between us ~ Chapter 1
The numbers on the digital clock screen turned to 03:00 am. The watchpoint was silent save the few still functioning Domiciliary bots quietly moving through the corridors and the screech of some local wildlife far off in the distant. The world was dark and still and peaceful. No sane person would be awake at this hour.
She didn't feel sane.
It was that dream again. The suffocating nightmare that woke her up most nights thrashing and tearing off covers before finally leaving her huddled in a ball, dampened with cold sweat and whimpering. Meiās breathing had finally slowed enough to a steady rhythm. Slowly and tentatively she sat up brushing her tousled hair out of her face. She wiped away the tears with her palms and took a deep breath. The only light in her small room came from the soft blue glow of Snowball the Droid silently charging nearby.
She had been in Gibraltar for 2 months, part of a skeleton crew in a forgotten watchpoint for a forgotten organization. She certainly had concerns of coming here, she still did. The Petras act made any overwatch activity illegal and its participants prosecuted. Mei was struggling to come to terms with her malfunctioned cryostasis and now had ten years of change in the world to catch up on. Seven months ago Winstons message had woken up the eco point, waking Mei up to a world that had abandoned and moved on without her. She threw herself into her work, there was years of data and information stored in the various ecopoints around the world. Not strictly working within Overwatch but still having to get permission from the UN to access the sites, this was made even more complicated by the fact she was declared dead. She had to work, if she stopped she would think, then dwell, then sink into despair. She had no family left, her sister had grieved and moved on with her life. Her mother had passed away whilst Mei slept and her own father no longer recognized her and murmured that his little XiĒoxuÄ was gone as he rocked back and forth in his room in the nursing home.
So she had worked and travelled, occasionally checking in with Winston who urged her to always let him know where she was. She had put this down to guilt on his part as head of science in Overwatch. She had never confronted her feelings on blame. She buried them, donning her well known cheerful optimistic persona, and worked. It wasn't until her friend Dr Angela Ziegler had called her, telling her to look at a recent article in the news from Greece. A former Overwatch agent had been found murdered at their family home. Further research showed they were not the only former agents killed. She had angrilly called Winston demanding answers, now realizing why he needed to know where she was. She and other agents were potentially marked people. For all Mei knew she was walking around with a target painted on her. It was a long and an emotional call, Mei also learning that Commander Morrison and Captain Amari were both alive and moving against Talon.
Mei didn't want to be involved in a war. She joined Overwatch for scientific purposes, to better the world and preserve it for future generations. Now being an unassuming climatologist for Overwatch had potentially put a mark on her head. Now she was urged to go to Gibraltar where past agents answering the call could work against a terrorist organization and the looming threat of a second crisis brewing in Russia. New recruits had even been silently brought in based on merit and skill. The Mech fighter Hana song, newly recovered from injuries sustained whilst single handedly fighting omnics. LĆŗcio Correia dos Santos, a freedom fighter, revolutionary leader and musician. Aleksandra Zaryanova, Sergeant within the Russian defence forces and former Athlete. Brigitte Lindholm had come with Reinhardt and was a highly skilled armourer. Fareeha Amari had also travelled to Gibraltar and had stayed despite a heated argument with her Mother. Even two Omnics Zenyatta and Bastion had joined their ranks. All fighters, all skilled combatants. Mei was no soldier. She could barely call herself a fighter. She was a scientist and she felt useless here, cut off from the eco points and only so much data to work from.
Still, at least she was safe here. Wasn't she?
She looked at the clock, 03:55. It had taken her nearly an hour to settle after her nightmare. A few more hours and she would be in the morning briefing. She moved her hand along her bedside table feeling for the small lamp and turned it on, squinting slightly at the sudden light. She put on her glasses and picked up her tablet, absentmindedly scrolling through the latest news, a headline caught her eye of the two criminal Junkers who had apparently blown up a corporate building in Sydney, their whereabouts now unknown. She gave a soft āhmph!ā They had travelled the globe near as much as she had. How on earth had they not been apprehended yet?
āHow long before āyouā are apprehended?ā Her mind asked. She ignored the question and continued to scroll through headlines...An interview with LumeriCo CEO Guillermo Porteroā¦ Speculation on Dvaās āsupposedā dismissal from duty...Lucioās cancelled tour...Tensions in Russia, a climbing death tollā¦murdersā¦.
Mei sighed. She was still emotionally charged and worrying news would not help her relax. She shivered slightly and pulled her cover back over herself, settling back into bed and began playing a silly game on the tablet. It wasn't long before she fell back into an uneasy sleep.
Jack Morrison walked into the 07:00 morning briefing and looked around the room. Winston was talking to Fareeha who stifled a yawn. To her left Lucio, Hana and Lena avidly spoke about a race around the watchpoint. Jack noted to maybe nip that in the bud before someone breaks their neck. Next to them was Mei, sitting quietly holding her tea in both hands, smiling politely when Angela sat down beside her. Torbjorn was sitting back in his chair, both hands folded on his stomach as he dozed, grumbling a curse as McCree used his prosthetic to light his match for his cigar then proceeded to put both feet up in from of him. Zarya gave him a distasteful look from across the table.
Ā āThis isn't enoughā He thought to himself. A team of barely twenty people with very limited resources operating under the radar against a large, well funded, terrorist organization. And things were only getting worse. He cleared his throat and the chatter died down, eyes turning to him.
Ā āGood morning, as you know those not here are currently on assignment and will be due back soon. We are still pursuing leads in Iraq, Western Africa and Russia, however we need new intelligence before assigning any agents to the field there. I won't have anyone going in blind whilst we are this limited. Now, I called this meeting this morning because my sources have traced known Talon agents moving across Australia.ā
Jack turned on the large projection in the centre of the rounded table bringing up a map of Australia and highlighting towns and cities of the sightings.
Ā āNow..we have a pattern. They are moving purposely, town to town. It's my belief that they are following these twoā¦ā Jack brought up two photos of the Junkers Mei had read about much earlier that morning. ā...If you are not aware who these two are, The one in the mask is Mako āRoadhogā Ruthlege. Mercenary for hire and Killer. The other, possibly more dangerous one is Jamison āJunkratā Fawkes. Demolition and explosives expert. Both from the settlement called Junkertown in the Australian outback. After their little crime spree around the world both touched down In Adelaide. They've certainly been keeping quiet until totalling a building in Sydney. Since then they have been on the move, coincidently being in the same areas as Talon. Whether they have been hired by Talon or being followed I have yet to learn. But what I do know is either way I want them in. They Are too dangerous to let Talon have and if Talon do want them than I want to know why..yes Jesse?ā
McCree had lazily raised his arm to speak. His gave his cigar a long drag before he spoke. āI know of these boys Jack, got a pretty bounty on their heads. Now theyāve slipped through every sheriff in every countries fingers. What makes you think we can find them?ā
āGenji is currently in Darwin northern Australia, he's been surveying theirs and Talons movements for over a week, heās been using old contacts who are less than savoury but they had the information on where they may be. Heās sure heās got a location down. A team will be on route tonight.ā
Winston cleared his throat āErr..Commander Morrison? Surely If Talon wanted to hire them they would have approached them by now? It seems a great deal of effort to track them the length of the country. What could they possibly want from them?ā
āMaybe they want more firepower?ā Suggested Torbjorn.
āNo they got plenty oā thatā said McCree, stubbing out his cigar on his prosthetic hand āI heard a rumor from an old Aussie bounty hunter looking for those two..he told me the kid supposedly found something in the Omnium ruins. Something valuable.
Zarya scoffed āAnything shiny is valuable to those scavengers. Its nothingā
āRegardless,ā continued Jack āWe get to them before Talon does. Myself, McCree, Winston and Lena will be leaving tonight. Weāll rendezvous with Genji at his location, find them and bring them here.ā
āHere?ā asked Fareeha in a worrying tone āIm sorry commander but is that a good idea? You want two criminals who take fun in destroying things..here?'
Zarya nodded in agreement. āThey bad people, you bring them here this whole base blow sky high.ā
āWe have a lot of valuable equipment and wouldn't our data be at risk if-ā Began Mei, until Hana thrust her arm in the air for attention.
āOoo ooo! Can I ask them about the Mech fights they have?ā
Lucio laughed āTheyāre not here to hang Hana.ā
āHave you seen those things Lu? All spikes and flamethrowers and then there's the undefeated champion called Wrecking ball and no one knows what he-ā
Winston coughed getting the young girls attention whilst pointedly looking at Jack who stood with a look on his face that suggested his patience was wearing very thin.
Hana gave an apologetic grin āOpps, sorryā she whispered and settled back into her seat.
Jack sighed. The scars on his face taut as he frowned.
āTalon wants them so I want themā Said Jack with a steel stubbornness āThey can choose to cooperate and come quietly or kick and scream, I don't care. What I do care about is knowing Talons next move. Once I get the information I want then Iāll toss them to the authorities. Any more questions?ā
If there was no one spoke. Jack grunted.
āGood. Those going we leave at 12:00 hours and with good time touching down at 22:00 hours, prepare yourselves and the Orca. Lena I want you to make sure stealth and auto modes are good for flight.ā
Lena saluted āAye aye!ā
āEveryone staying here, wait on your orders. Amari is due back tonight, should our mission in Australia be successful or not we will debrief on return, but for now you are all dismissed.'
The room began to empty slowly as Jack stayed behind, seemingly studying the holographic map in front of him. He glanced towards the door as the final person left, watching it shut completely. Once he knew he was alone he turned off the large projection and brought up a smaller screen in front of him. He types in a code, a small ping noise signalling granted access. Jack glanced at the door again, then proceeds to type on the interactive screen in front of him. He was contacting someone.
Ā :Are you sure they are at the location you gave me?
He typed He stared at the screen, waiting on a reply. Another glance toward the door. What felt like an eternity passed when finally a return message popped up on screen.
Ā :You know it's polite to say hello first?
Jack grunted, and swore under his breath. He was not in the mood for games.
Ā :Is the location correct? :ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦
He waited.
Ā :I am offended you have to askā¦ :(
As Jack began to type a rather angry reply another message appeared on screen.
Ā :Location correct. Keep your Ninja on visual. Strike team moving tonight. Time unknown.
Ā :Why these two?
Ā :The Tank is disposable. They want Fawkes. I don't know why.
Ā :Anything else?
Ā :I give it two days before you try to kill him.
Ā :Anything important?
Ā :No, but do let me know why Talon wants him.Did I tell you no one wants to tell me anything here? I feel so left out and the big bosses are very angry after your cowboy got involved in the great train heist. Whatever he threw into the canyon was vital.
Ā :Just do your job. Both of them.
Ā :Oh how you two sound so alike.
Ā :I mean it. And be careful.
Ā :Im offended. You know one slip up and i'm dead? Dr Lucky charms will do the deed herself. Now she really doesn't like me.
Ā :Signing out
Ā :Wait!
Ā :What is it?
Ā :ā¦.You know it's polite to say goodbye!!
Jack signed out hoping it was as passive aggressive as it possible could be, deleting the message file as he had done for years and turned off the projection. He stood for a moment as if deep in thought before sighing deeply and walking to the door, letting it softly shut behind him.

Hi please PLEASE talk to me abt the socioeconomic state of japan in bnh verse I am SO interested to hear ur thoughts? I'm a poli theory major and let me tell u im a SLUT for fic that deal w the political/social repercussions of fictional happenings
sure thing!Ā
disclaimer: i only just graduated high school so iām pulling all of this out of my assĀ one semester of macroeconomics i took in senior year. feel free to add onto or correct any of thisĀ
edit:Ā if anyone wants to use this for reference when writing boku no hero japan, feel free! iād appreciate any credit, but itās not necessary.Ā
--
what really got me thinking about the socioeconomic state of boku no hero japan was probably the difference between orudera junior high (bakugou and izukuās school) vs. yuuei, both of which are in the same city, musutafu. orudera junior high gives off the feeling of a school thatās a bit run down; not terrible enough that it obstructs the kidsā education, but enough that you think the school probably canāt afford to keep it in good repair.Ā
hereās a screenshot of bakugou and izukuās classroom:
and then hereās izukuās desk, which has details indicating that itās in slight disrepair:Ā
if you go back through the chapters and look at the setting at yuuei, itās spic-n-span. just super clean and well-kept. itās an entire world of differenceā¦ so already there is this huge disparity between the junior high school in izukuās neighborhood, and yuuei, which is a 40 minute subway ride away (chapter 3).
makes sense that yuuei would be so nice and expensive if itās the most prestigious hero academy in the country, right? but thereās more details too, like this brief exchange between bakugou & iida right at the very beginning:Ā
bakugouās resentful comment about iida being anĀ āeliteā really only makes sense to me in the context of economic disparity. letās infer that soumei junior high is better funded, better equipped, better everything in general. of course bakugou will resent iida for that, especially coming from the more ill-maintained orudera junior high. the difference in their economic status is already apparent.Ā
this isnāt even going into the difference between yaoyorozuās incredibly rich status vs the rest of the class vs uraraka, who has decided to become a hero because she wants the financial security, and who also lives in an apartment by herself and skips meals to save on money.Ā so even within the class itself thereās a huuuge difference in economic status.Ā
you could just think of it as the individual circumstances of the characters, but i think itās more of a systematic problem ā see, again, the difference in infrastructure quality between the different schools (the public school is not doing so great but yuuei is doing fantastic). maybe the city is poor, or maybe all of its funds go towards repairing the constant property damage from villain attacks, or maybe thereās just some areas they donāt care to maintain. either way: just by traversing different parts of the city youāll probably see big differences in how well the neighborhoods are kept.Ā
and now, for a different question: if this is the golden age of peace, why are there still so many villain fights?Ā
looking at chapter one (the first villain we see is a guy who stole a purse and then tried to fight back when he was caught) and chapter 115 (villain activity increases sharply after all mightās retirement), i feel likeā¦ these attacks are driven by financial need. look at this:Ā
a group of adults gathered to commit crimeā¦ just to steal a register from a convenience store. thatās such a small sum of money! but they were so elated to get just that amount. it seems like the kind of thing that would happen if you were strapped for money, right?Ā
and then the villain from chapter 1: why would he fight so hard just because he got caught stealing a purse? he stopped the trains, for peteās sake. all i can think is that a) he needed the money heād be able to get by selling the purse, or b) he knew he wouldnāt be able to afford the fines, and thatās why he fought.Ā
maybe iām reading too much into this, but based off these crimes, plus the other details provided above, i really feel like thereās a growing problem in boku no hero japan where thereās an increasing disparity in wealth.Ā
another thing to consider: in the golden age of peace, youād have to be pretty stupid, pretty reckless, or pretty desperate to commit a crime where heroes frequent. (or youāre a black market dealer and/or evil.) if youāve got an increasing number of people who are poor, who are dropping from the middle class to under the poverty line, or who have no upwards economic mobility, then youāve got plenty of people desperate enough to try some petty crime for the sake of just a bit more cash for rent this month. that would be enough to explain the frequent villain fights that heroes get into ā which are common enough that people will stop by and watch the show on their way to work. (chapter 1)Ā
this is really just a theoryā¦ but what could you use to explain why thereās a growing number of people struggling to make ends meet?Ā
hereās some factoids about japan (this article is from 2016):Ā
its real wages were falling, and as such, had weak domestic consumption; people buying less & saving more, or people just not having the money to spend in the first place, resulting in less money circulating in the economy and causing the economy to slow down. efforts to stimulate wage growth in 2015 did not make it down to the workersĀ
there was an increasing number of people with non-regular jobs, part time jobs, etc. as opposed to full time jobs, so they couldnāt get the financial security of a full time job (source)
one in six people in 2014 were living in relative poverty. this rate is higher among single mothers and among middle aged men without families, i believe.Ā
japan was like, 39th of 41 developed countries in terms of child poverty (the higher the number, the worse it is). something like that
this is despite japan having a high labor participation rate and a low unemployment rate, and also a low violent crime rateĀ
basing boku no hero japan off of actual real world japanās current economic problems: we could surmise that, in boku no hero japan, although nominal wages are rising, real wages are falling; infrastructure spending is poor and disorganized, geared towards repairing villain-inflicted property damage and not enough towards everything else; and people are finding difficulty holding onto jobs (as seen with urarakaās parents) and are forced into low-paying, part-time work, and may find themselves struggling with debt.Ā
oh, and hereās a quote from the guardian (jan 2017):Ā āexperts say programmes to help needy children are underfunded and held back by bureaucratic inefficiency and political apathy.āĀ
so itād actually be quite viable for boku no hero japan to be doing quite badly, economically, and to be struggling with wealth inequality and other super fun things like that.Ā
boku no hero japan is also like centuries in the future, one where villainy is commonplace, so itās not a surprise that peopleās response to struggling to make ends meet would beĀ āwell, i have a pretty good quirk. if iām lucky, i think iāll be able to steal some cash, and iām desperate enough to do it, too.ā SO, my personal guess, is that this is a biiiig portion of the crimes that heroes fight.Ā
i mean, it doesnāt really make sense for villains to do so muchā¦ villain-ingā¦ when thereās footage almost every single week of the heroes taking down yet ANOTHER criminal. why do they keep coming out of the woodwork? whyās there still enough criminals to keep all the heroes in business?Ā ācause theyāre desperate and need the money, probably. which is understandable. so even if you eliminate a villain, you havenāt addressed the economic problems that drove them to become a villain in the first place; hence, thereās always someone else rising up to take their place.Ā
on that note,Ā letās take a closer look at the hero industry!Ā
in chapter 1, horikoshi gives us a brief history of heroics. quirks emerged, the government wasnāt sure what to do to combat quirk-related crime, heroes emerged, and heroes eventually became sanctioned by the law. and when that happened:Ā
so thatās pretty cool! seems like heroes arenāt specifically a government institution, but they are affiliated with & rewarded by it. makes sense, since heroes have to work closely with law enforcement on some matters, anyways. heroes =/= police only because heroes are specifically there to combat quirk-related crime.Ā
but times have changed since then, as shown in the latest manga chapter:Ā
āitās all about entertainment and approval ratings and whatnot.āĀ
we know from the stain arc that heroes are still paid by the government:Ā
āgiven my statusā ā in other words: his hero ranking? popularity? how respected he is as a hero? hmmm.Ā
urarakaās mentor that arc explains that heroes are sort ofĀ āpaid on commissionā by the number of crimes they can resolve, but said commissions usually get sent their way by the police:Ā
but to get your name out there (both to the police and to the public), and to become higher ranking in the popularity polls, you need to cultivate a public image, too. get yourself some attention.Ā
so to cultivate a public image, one thing that heroes can do is to conduct a fight in a public, open space where anyone can see. apparently this happens often enough that izuku would actually regularly run into one of these fights on his way to/from school, and would stay to take notes and learn from them. villain attacks are ALSO frequent enough that apparently all might keeps arriving at yuuei late because he stops to help out:Ā
in other words, villain attacks and fights are a regular, almost quotidian experience. more on that in a sec. for now, just think about how the heroes benefit from public fights: they get to show off, and their fights are broadcasted, and they can get a boost in their rankings. fighting against a villain, they donāt just have a motive to do their job and save people; they have a motive to grab the spotlight and show off. popularity boost! we actually see this happen in chapter one, when mount lady leaps into kamui woodsā fight and defeats a villain in one kick.Ā
so, as a citizen, you may be grateful to the heroes for saving people ā but you might resent them for turning these situations into a spectacle for showing off. incidents sometimes turn into competitions between heroes. if you take that a step further, you might think some of the heroes are only helping because they want to look good. and hey, thatās not the kind of person youād want to entrust your life to, right?Ā
because heroics is now partially driven by entertainment and image, heroes are all forming their separate hero agencies to try and differentiate themselves. for example, this list:Ā
while they work together to fight crime, they have to battle for popularity and attentionā¦ they probably even have to vie for commissions/crime cases from the police. they all need to make themselves stronger, cooler, & a better choice than the other hero agencies. itās something of a conflict of interest. you can imagine sometimes that gets in the way of cooperation (i.e. endeavorās forever grudge against all might. yāall should read the illegals spin off.)Ā
and if youāre battling for popularity and attentionā¦ it would also make sense for you to center your hero office somewhere with lots of crime, and lots of people to see you fighting crime. right? urban centers would provide plenty of both. what about slums, and the underground, and the outskirts, then? these are places that news reporters and cameras canāt reach easily ā and possibly might not want to travel to at all. these are also places where passersby and onlookers might run away instead of praising you. you wonāt get a lot of return (in terms of publicity) by working here. so if youāre business-mindedā¦ youāre not going to conduct your hero investigations here.Ā
i mean, yuuei even has a business department. heroics is a business. you make money off of this, and you have to sell your image to the police and the public. if you focus more attention on places that are profitable to you, then the other areas lose. thereās no way around that.Ā
so poor neighborhoods, bad neighborhoods, camera- and television broadcasting-inaccessible places get the short end of the stick. the heroes donāt go here as often, because itās not profitable.Ā (well, the heroes probably come down here if they get a police commission. but where are they if a spontaneous crime happens, hm?) meanwhile you turn on the t.v. and you see like five heroes show up at one battle downtown, which is complete overkill. youād feel pretty resentful, right? do the heroes think your area of residence isnāt worth protecting, just because it doesnāt get them as much attention? do the heroes think itās okay to just ignore your area of residence? fuck that, right? heroes are supposed to serve the public, and youāre still part of the public too, right?Ā
thatās gonna build up more resentment between bad neighborhoods & areas v.s. the areas that heroes frequent (often urban, downtown, lots of people to witness their good deeds). and it definitely builds up resentment towards heroes who arenāt so discreet about the money-making aspects of their businesses.Ā
like: all might sells merchandise. okay, understandable. present mic has a radio show (which probably gets paid to run advertisements). okay, thatās pretty cool! but then you get things like this:Ā
a hero using their public service, publicly paidĀ hoursā¦ to shoot a commercial and make themselves a little bit of cash on the side. if youāre in one of those areas that heroes donāt frequent so often ā wouldnāt you be pretty furious to find out that the person whoās supposed to be fighting crime in your neighborhood just made $500,000 by filming a commercial instead?Ā
youāre going to turn on the television and see ads with pro heroes in them ā pro heroes who used their public service hours to do something for their own profit. this isnāt to say that heroes canāt film commercials, or make money on the side. if theyāre helping people, itās great that they can make a living! but theyāre making that living by pandering to the entertainment industry when theyāre supposed to beā¦ you knowā¦ helping people. even kendou (in the picture above) comments that itās not very hero like. the next page, momo replies that this aspect of the hero business isĀ āunavoidable.ā ads, entertainment ā itās all part of the hero industry now.Ā
and they donāt feel that good about it.Ā
if all this conjecture is true, then ā as grateful as people are to the heroes ā they might be quite critical of the hero industry itself, and the heroes that embody the worst parts of it. iām not surprised that there are a whole bunch of people who feelĀ āotheredā by heroes, and by society as a whole.Ā
likeā¦ thatās no excuse to be a villain. stop that. but it would certainly be a reason for people to dislike the hero industry. AND it would explain why it is that stainās ideology resonated so deeply with other people.Ā
AAAAND thatās basically the rundown of what i think the socioeconomic state of boku no hero japan is like. sorry this was horribly long
#teasdays#readmore because this is unbearably long#meta#i guess?#i don't really have a proper tag for this stuff#ask

2018: Where Iām Going, Where I Want to Go and What I Hope to Accomplish
New Post has been published on https://www.furilia.com/2018-where-im-going-where-i-want-to-go-and-what-i-hope-to-accomplish/
2018: Where Iām Going, Where I Want to Go and What I Hope to Accomplish
Yes, itās that time of year again for this particular blog post but wait, donāt start groaning. While some people may find the predictable end of the year/start of a new year posts a little formulaic, I always look forward to writing them and I hope theyāre anything but predictable. For me, theyāre a great way to organize my thoughts and to set priorities for the next 12 months. Itās far too easy to fall into familiar and comfortable routines, at least it is for me, but by starting out the year with a clear roadmap ā or at least a solid set of goals ā I feel that Iām able to break out of that routine and to achieve some real accomplishments. At least, thatās the idea.
Looking back at previous attempts at setting myself up for success, the results have been decidedly mixed. Some years were better than others, but at least I tried. At least I started out on the right foot mindful to make some corrections to my own life while also looking ahead at what opportunities might be out there. With all of this in mind, I once again want to share some of my personal goals; ways I want to improve, as well as some destinations I would love to visit. Some of these are confirmed, others are aspirational but I think itās smart to have goals in mind and itās always fun to see how far down the list I can get.
Confirmed Trips
Route 66 Driving The Mother Road has been on my bucket list for a very, very long time but 2018 is the year itās finally going to happen. Working with Marriott International, Iāll be driving the entirely of this epic route starting in Chicago and ending in Santa Monica, CA. Iāve wanted to tackle this journey for a long time, to reconnect with my own country and to see quiet little corners of it completely foreign to me. Along the way are quirky roadside attractions, strange motels and national wonders that rank amongst the best in the world. Just as people did in the 1950s and 60s, I want to experience a great American road trip and to discover aspects to the American experience that I donāt even know exist.
Northern Iceland Over the last few years, Iāve traveled to Iceland on average about once a year, each time deliberately focusing on a different part of the country. While not large, thereās a lot to see and do in Iceland and from the very beginning I knew I wanted to take my time and to get to know it more deeply than I do many other destinations. Well, thereās one last part of the country for me to explore and I intend to do it this year ā North Iceland. Iāve left it for last out of laziness, itās harder to reach than the other, more touristy areas and Iļæ½ļæ½ļæ½m not sure if thereās nearly as much to see and do as on the south coast for example. But itās Iceland, so Iām positive that whatever is up there is both freakishly gorgeous and endlessly interesting.
Maybe India India is one of those places that evokes a visceral reaction from people who have visited ā they either love it or hate it, there is no middle ground. I have also been putting off visiting for fear I wasnāt ready for the experience. But now, I think Iām prepared and am excited to finally visit and see what the subcontinent is really like. Iāve said in the past though I would only visit if it was done in the right way, and I hope that by working with an expert operator I will experience the best this fascinating country has to offer. I havenāt confirmed my plans yet, but I hope very much that it will finally happen in 2018.
Where Iād Love To Go
Central/South America Iāve only been to South America a few times and Central America for 1 day, so itās obviously a part of the world that I donāt feel like I know at all. But that doesnāt mean it hasnāt interested me, it has and near the top of that interest list is Brazil. From the massive cities to rainforests and jungles and of course beautiful coastlines, Brazil seems to offer visitors a little bit of everything. But crime, high prices and difficulties in intra-country travel have put off many would-be travelers. Iām curious to visit Brazil and more places around the region to see for myself whether or not these are real concerns, or fake media-hyped problems.
Switzerland and Portugal Iāve seen most of Western Europe but not all of it, which is why Iāve included both Portugal and Switzerland on this list. While I have visited Switzerland, it was for just 2 days and thatās it. If Instagram has taught me anything itās that Switzerland appears to be both incomparably beautiful and full of cheese which are fantastic reasons to visit in my humble opinion. Add in vibrant cities, chocolate and fancy watches and I think it sounds like a perfect trip. Portugal on the other hand has completely eluded me and I donāt know why. I know many people who have visited, they all love it and Iāve never read anything negative about it. While Iām a little nervous about the food (I donāt eat fish or seafood) the pastries alone might finally lure me over in 2018.
Tasmania I have been very fortunate to have spent a fair amount of time traveling around Australia and while I have much more to experience, I have been to almost every Australian state. Almost. One has eluded me and based on all of the photos Iāve seen, I know that when I finally do visit itāll be love at first sight. Visiting Australia is always special, but Tasmania in particular has piqued my interest for years. Slightly remote, amazingly beautiful and somewhat different from the mainland, Tasmania is an intriguing place. Of all of these destinations, I really do hope that I can make this one happen in 2018.
Arctic I love expeditionary trips, whether itās to Antarctica, the Galapagos or some other far-flung place. I enjoy feeling like a real explorer and not just a tourist and while Iāve gotten close, a true expedition to the Arctic is high on my to-do list. There are many different ways to reach the Arctic through a few different countries, but no matter how I get up there Iād love to spend a couple of weeks exploring this hard to reach part of the world.
Back to Africa Africa is infectious, of that there can be no doubt. Iāve been privileged enough to have visited several times and I once again feel the siren call beckoning. While Iād love to revisit places I know I love, like South Africa, Iād also like to visit new places and enjoy different experiences. As a lover of wildlife, a gorilla trek is near the top of my wishlist, whether in Uganda or Rwanda the promise of trekking amongst these gorgeous giants is almost too appealing to ignore.
Resolutions
Talk to more people Not long ago, I was asked to chronicle some of the people I met while traveling who made a difference in my travel experiences. The problem was I couldnāt think of very many, which worried me greatly. It showed me that I didnāt do a great job of getting out and chatting with people last year, one of the most important aspects of the travel experience. I need to get back to my roots in 2018 and take the time to engage with as many people as I can when Iām on the road.
Walk the road not taken I think Iāve fallen into a travel rut, which isnāt necessarily a bad thing, but itās not good either. In 2018 I need to make sure that I stop being so regimented, and put down the guidebooks and just go off and do my own thing. I think Iāve become so obsessed with documenting everything and making sure I donāt miss something āimportantā that I sometimes miss the most crucial aspect of travel ā the spirit of discovery.
Be more patient I know itās a virtue, but itās not a quality I possess in large abundance. This can be especially problematic while traveling. It starts at the airport for me, I hate waiting in lines and the security queue is when my patience first starts to falter. I get annoyed at the people who have no idea what they are doing and hold up everyone behind them in the process. This continues on to boarding the plane with the same confused people strolling aimlessly through the cabin. You see where I am going with this. I need to learn to take a deep breath and just relax. I will get to my destination and there is no reason to be upset. No matter what happens, nothing THAT bad will result, so take a moment to breathe and assess.
