If Bellara really is a mage then it might make more sense for me to play a rogue both for the character I'm building in my brain and also to balance out the party but. I don't really wanna 😭
#based on what they said about how momentum works for rogues in this game im worried i wont be able to play a rogue well#like i have a slow reaction speed lol. if a big part of the rogues abilities revolves around being able to dodge attacks i might be screwed#i was really hoping to play either a mage or a warrior. and i guess i could still play a warrior#but like im really interested in the veil jumper faction#thats a big reason im trying to plan my build to be complementary to bellara bc i figure ill want to have her in my party a lot#(also thinking i might romance her the first time around but im still undecided bc all the women are so cool)#and after seeing the rogue specializations and us all assuming she was gonna be a veil ranger i was like#okay cool since shes got that down i can be something different#but if shes NOT a veil ranger rogue then i feel like it would make the most sense for my character to be a veil ranger rogue#if im really interested in leaning into the veil jumper stuff for my rook#hhhhhh#i know the game isnt coming out until fall so theres still plenty of time to think on this stuff#but uh i ALSO still need to do my second playthrough of inquisition (and first playthrough of trespasser) before it comes out#so im trying to plan out what i want to do with my dav character so i can decide what i want to do with my dai character first#in order to not make the playthroughs feel too repetitive#i was thinking qunari warrior inquisitor but if im not gonna be doing an (elf) mage rook then#maybe ill do a qunari mage inquisitor instead? dammit i JUST got excited about the champion specialization tho...#i guess its still technically there in dav but. elf champion warrior just doesnt feel as right as it does for qunari tbh#and i feel like an elf would still make the most sense with the veil jumpers :/#ughh maybe i go back to my first plan of doing an elf necromancer in inquisition and a qunari in veilguard?#but what faction would i choose 😭#rambling

who is the best faction merchant and why is it VORGOTH
Tumblr media
haven't seen enough vorgoth thirst on the dash so here you go. They (Edit: ty for the correction, rambles-on-dragonage! Never got that banter T.T) feel like a little tribute to terry pratchett/discworld Death to me (esp with the all caps subtitles) and i love it.
honestly surprised at how delightful i find all the necropolis/nevarra stuff, it didn't really interest me in tevinter nights or in passing mention in DAI but in veilguard it might be my favorite area to hang out in and do quests. I just love the direction they went with the death mages as thoughtful and reverent instead of tropey-er directions (sure there's a little but it's kinda cheeky/whimsical, it felt refreshing tbh). I love all the implications with the wisps? Just a cool direction to take really. And emmerich's really the best character to deliver all that info to me lol
gonna have to do a mourn watch rook i guess (and a veil jumper, then grey warden, then idk if i want to do lords or shadow dragons? i mean im lying to myself, ill do them all at least once probably)

i started my mourn watch playthrough the other day, and so far it's exactly what i wanted from the veil jumper origin. don't get me wrong, im loving the mourn watcher origin, i just wish a veil jumper rook had gotten a similar treatment. honestly, this might just be my biggest complaint about veilguard.
the special interactions when you reach the necropolis really make you feel like a part of the faction. emmrich has so much special dialogue with a mourn watch rook and he doesn't treat you like you're ignorant of knowledge you should have. instead, he takes your knowledge for granted, based on your likely rank in the watch, and talks to you like a peer. there's also a real sense of kinship between him and rook as fellow necromances dealing with a world that largely misunderstands them and finds their art off-putting.
i also liked the familiarity between rook, myrna, and vorgoth. they're not as close as rook and the crows, for instance, but that makes sense considering the dynamic of the different factions.
meanwhile, as a veil jumper it seems like strife and irelin barely know rook, and bellara talks to you as if you're completely unfamiliar with the workings of arlathan. playing as a mourn watcher now, i barely noticed a difference in dialogue/interaction between rook and the veil jumpers. or even that much difference in how a veil jumper rook behaves in arlathan forest versus a non-veil jumper rook.
it's a huge disappointment too because i can see so many ways that the veil jumpers could've been more developed, letting rook shine regardless of lineage and class, and without overshadowing bellara:
rooks who are tinkerers and can "yes, and" bellara with their knowledge and enthusiasm, historian rooks who are curious about ancient elves and are more focused on the culture than the relics, fade nerd rooks who really care about the metaphysical wonkery in arlathan forest, explorer rooks who really know their way around the forest despite all its weirdness. real missed opportunities here!
and while the veil jumpers aren't as close knit as the crows or the watchers, maybe there could've been more npcs with ambient dialogue who have worked with rook before, or more general commiserating between veil jumpers and their experiences in arlathan forest. i also think it could've been really interesting to lean into strife being strict with rook and irelin being an actual friend who goes behind his back to keep rook in the loop or something.
seriously, bioware, what the hell.
i'd be curious to hear from players who did the other origins. are they as well crafted as the crows and mourn watch origins or are they like the veil jumpers?

My thoughts on every faction in Veilgaurd:
Grey Wardens - probably a lot of people are gonna chose this faction for their rook, purely becuase of nostalgia and just how attached we dragon age fans are to the wardens. Should be very interesting to see what happens to them after the entire corypheus fiasco
Antivian Crows - same as the wardens, lots of nostalgia and warm feelings about this one, cuz i love zevran (despite never romancing him LMAO). Im really looking forward to how antivia and their assasins wil fit into this story. Also, feels like a perfect faction for a rouge
Shadow Dragons - Slave Liberation? Fighting against an ancient corrupt regime? TEVINTER?! WHERE DO I SIGN UP
Veil Jumpers - Im always down for some ancinet elven ruins and more fade lore... espeically if im right and this faction will be closely related to solas and elves plotline, more then any other faction
Lord of Fortune - dont know if this is a hot take or not, but this is probably the one faction im least interested in, mostly cuz im not that into treasure hunter concept... but hey, this rook will be from Rivain, i think? (correct me if im wrong) So, in that aspect, im really looking forward to seeing and learning moe about Qunari territory
Mourn Watch - more interesting to me then lords to me on conceptual level, but i dont have that much to say about it, other then "Necromancy? from Nevarra? oh, thats pretty cool!"
As for the faction for my own rook, ill probably chose Shadow Dragons or Veil jumpers - dragons cuz slave liberation, veil jumpers cuz elf lore and maybe Solas

What class, faction and romance are you planning for rook!Cyrus? 👀 I don't know of you already talked about it here, if so, my apologies
hi anon!!! no need to apologize, call me a varric tethras kinnie the way im Always Yapping About Cyrus
Faction: veil jumper
It's the Veil Jumpers who pull Cyrus out of the Fade and Clan Morlyn (the Dalish clan of the people who seem to be the Veil Jumper faction contacts, Strife & Irelin) who help him recover. It takes about six months for him to regain enough of his strength to join expeditions into Arlathan Forest. He's less interested in the history & knowledge/artifact recovery aspect of it than, say, Bellara-- for him, it's more about adventuring again and keeping his companions safe and feeling like he's contributing something to his people.
He's a member of the Veil Jumpers for about a year before the incident mentioned in the Aldwir backstory and joining back up with Varric. In that time, the two of them keep in constant touch using sending crystals, courtesy of Dorian.
Class: sword & shield warrior + reaper spec
Reaper is so mechanically similar to Reaver (one of Cyrus' DA2 specs) but with a necromancy rather than a cannibalism flavor, which *I* personally think is a net loss, but it works well as an evolution for Cyrus, moving from blood sacrifice to a kind of peaceful loss. I also like it as a reflection of all the time he spent in the Fade, a realm of spirit rather than embodiment. He is, in true charisma -> wisdom caster pipeline fashion, more attuned with that part of himself now, coming closer to the veil between life and death without actively self-destructing like he was in his 20s.
Romance: remaining open to where the winds take me but leaning toward lucanis
what's better than one living weapon? one former living weapon showing a current living weapon that there's another, softer way to be.
(that said, when i first ported cyrus into bg3, i really thought i was going to romance astarion with him, and then karlach happened, so there's still plenty of time for any of the other folks to sweep cyrus off his feet!
And whether that romance or any other is canon for cyrus is also a question, given how things may or may not play out with varric..........)

okay finished veilguard finally. my most important thoughts
why doesn't merrill lead the veil jumpers. why is she not at least a member. this is entirely her shit
the evanuris killing/defeating the titans and inadvertently creating the blight from their corpses/corrupted psyches goes so hard and is so incredibly awful and lace should be able to yell at solas about it for 100 in-game hours
davrin makes an incredible griffon dad but i'd love for his story to be more about him and less about assan
the zipline mechanic is iconic. zoom zoom motherfuckers
emmrich volkarin if you read this im free on Thursday night and would like to hang out. Please respond to this and then hang out with me on Thursday night when I’m free.
that being said the "show romance interest" scene where lucanis almost kissed my rook had me gasping for air. i think i genuinely said awooga
my rook was a shadow dragon and i found the faction lacking. for a group of people whose representatives are coded as south asian the tone and actions they took against slavery while the game never really seemed to feature enslaved people in a meaningful way (save that one guy in emmrich's quest) felt very...white savior. i also chose to help treviso over minrathous so i may have locked myself out of quests that fleshed out the shadow dragons more but. also this is dragon age so i'm not getting my hopes up.
this is an unpopular take but i actually kind of like how nice the companions are to each other??? i totally get why folks are yearning for some juicier interactions though. for a group of people from such diverse backgrounds, they don't seem that ideologically opposed to one another. where i DO think the writers could have maybe hit the happy medium between "we all speak in therapy talk" and "fenris did you ever think about killing yourself?" is by having them engage in the time honored tradition of close friends roasting the shit out of each other mercilessly
this certainly was a game, huh

imma say. yeah im completely smitten for harding.
spoilers below
I figured she seems to try to be tough based off the trailers I saw, and she truly is, even Varric confirmed this. But what really got me was her studious side- especially since she does talk about the locations in previous game, and how she had dig into the history behind locations- that was my original love for her back when I played DAI. But I actually love her more when she actually decide to loko into the dwarf history 'cause of a certain situation and. It fits my Rook.
Vabyn is a Veil Jumper dwarf who joined that faction because they find histories of the location (the Arlathan Forest) interesting- but they also prove themself to be one of their best warriors in the camp, helping to aid historians and other Veil Jumpers, and does scouting for others. But because of the faction , they also find themself wonder about their own people's history. However they don't voice it due to how many times they had heard the same question of 'dwarves can't dream or do magic' over and over.
Not until they got to hear from Harding and... yeah I like it!
...It's also pretty cool to see the insightful stuff about dwarves from Rook and Harding, ngl.

for the da4 ask game! if you havent already been asked these ones - dragonageheap
6. Do you have your Rook(s) planned out to any degree? If so, would you share some details or ideas you have?
10. Which location are you most excited/hoping to explore in-game?
Hello! I haven’t been asked these yet I don’t think
I don’t really have a strongly planned Rook, though. I don’t want to strongly attach myself to something that might not fit well, especially since I don’t know how much detail will be in each Rook’s backstory related to factions. But I know I’m more likely to pick the Shadow Dragons? Unless I can have a short Qunari, then I’m 100% gonna have a short Qunari, well Tal Vashoth. Or Vashoth? I hope I can play a proper Tal Vashoth, someone who left the Qun!
And a location I’m excited to explore…
Ok so I’m hyped to see the weird reality warping in the Arlathan Forest and see what it’s like for the Veil Jumpers. It seems so cool! But for countries… *Im really interested in the Anderfels*. Mostly cause of Anders. I love Anders.

Veilguard Breakdown Pt 2
Going deeper into each companion, their quests. Factions, Cameos, and some writing stuff. SPOILERS ABOUND, read at your own risk.
These are still mostly chronological notes reacting real time to quests and characters:
I had some HOT opinions on some early game stuff. Solas' comment on abhorring blood magic, some comments on the elves and how the Veil Jumpers were so on board with denouncing their gods. My finger shot up to "well actually" very quickly but I kept playing and they addressed them. They clarify like a little later and I think that's something I and a lot of other people have gotten bad at: being patient with writing.
Now don't get me wrong, there is a lot of bad writing out there that won't address stuff that is important.
But we gotta trust sometimes that we won't get a wall of exposition right away. That we'll get a line that makes us go, huh that's interesting I want to know more about that. And wait five minutes to naturally come back to it.
AAAAAAAA INKY SHOWS UP! Pretty early! Happy to see them so soon!
BACK AND SO COOL I LOVE THE DIALOGUE BEING A LEADER BEING A HERO
BITCH SHES GETTING DRAWN AS THE GENERAL SHE IS!! SAVING SOUTHERN THEDAS. (I did not disband the Inquisition. I had a Solavellan inquisitor which by the end of Inquisition is fucking beat down into playing the role of The Herald, which I like as a mirror of Solas and his mask of Fen'Harel.)
Damn Solas being a catty sexy sassy bitch saying he tortured a bitch with rumors and laughter. Note from later: THE FUCKING ROLLERCOASTER THEY ROCK YOU ON
everyone is def less bitchy than previous games and not dealing with as much overt racism. Not having a base in “the real world” removes some of that. But despite taking place in cities, not seeing alienages or acknowledging that makes it super different. I’m sure it’s something people will criticize but im ok with Thedas being Nicer™️. Companions are less bitchy but there is tension and conflict but it is like. communicated and resolved super easily. Which i know it’s maybe fun for Alistar and Morrigan to fight and argue but you have to have a character like Morrigan to do that. There aren’t really any catty bitches on the squad. This is a group of professionals hired on a job. They all feel more like coworkers than a found family. Like DA:2 as a group gave me anxiety they would shit on each other so much like you guys should not be friends.
Don’t know what the beef people have with the dialogue. It all works fine for me.
Taash’s gender stuff is a little fast. Baby’s first gender story but it’s still good. They are appealing to wide audience. Still nice to see. I love Maddie’s Mini on tiktok’s comment that like the qun’s gender roles are so progressive they wrap back around to being conservative. Men and women have distinct roles and they WILL trans your gender to fit them. So Taash being non-binary is like the one way to be difficult for her mom to understand about gender.
Solas was a spirit! Imean they all were. with lyrium bodies?? ok guess that’s why y’all are immortal. ugh i love all that implies. He hates having a physical form but learning to love all the sensations that come with it. The body is joy but also horror. The miseries too but food, touch, smell.
omg so cute when harding moved a rock she shakes her hands in the air like woo i did it!
wow took awhile to remember to write notes (I played like 15 hours forgetting to do any notes)
Interesting mix of companion quests! Funny I did the Formless One dragon first so now every subsequent dragon fight has been a breeze.
Harding’s personal quest was an easy choice: push for compassion. She’s so nice. Bellara’s final choice felt disconnected from her “omg it’s my BROTHER” lines. and Neve I didn’t really have a say because i didn’t help Minrathous. I think i got her to be a defender of Dock Town?
Taash and Emmerich’s both are the best, most emotional and RP wise, hardest choices. while I didn’t give a fuck about these side boss characters, Taash’s emotional end with her mom was very impactful. Hezzenkoss’ giant skeleton was super cool visually and MANFREED. I chose to revive him because idk. I think when we’re fighting against immortal gods it’s hard to be like yea do that too Emmerich. But it’s still sad and either way he’s having to confront loss and mortality?? So either way is bittersweet which is GOOD WRITING. Cannot believe people choose lich romanced Emmerich.
Davrin’s quest was very satisfying too! It also felt like an easy choice to have the griffons start a new legacy since that is nice symmetry to his own storyline.
loved getting to run around Villa Delamorte locked in with a romance to Lucanis like wait a second this is… your house? This. Is your house. YOUR house. ok ok ok like fuck i’m a backwoods elf treasure hunter wtf and having to meet Catarina again but now as like. Her favorite grandson’s romantic partner. Neither choice for his felt particularly impactful. Maybe if they killed Illario and not just imprisoned him? I think i picked his based on armor tbh. The only one I did that for.
Yay to my inquisitor and rook having a drink together! I do love my Lavellan but Rook is like girl, stand up. Oh my god. (But internally, oh my god I love the dialogue ugh)
Very tame romance scenes (I took this back by the end. I appreciate the ramping up in the final fight and Lucanis only being able to get some comfortable sleep with her there is… oh so good. They have such an interesting dynamic. Babysitting Spite. Will write more in fanfic to explore it). Their lead up was very unromantic.
THANK GOD NO HARD TIME WITH THE GRIFFONS!!! They survive without blight!! Kind of a stupid choice tbh why not have them both get some gryphies? In the forest and the wardens? also rip but i’m hoping the wardens won’t be around much longer

i am about to become the least normal gay person in the world (see: autistic and proud of it) so please; lemme know.
what race/class/faction combos are you most excited to see?
me too babes, me too 🤝
im excited to see qunari in just about all the factions since we have so little of them in anything. like a qunari of the mourn watch is so interesting to me, how did you get there!! and qunari grey warden of course. as i was pondering this i started thinking about a qunari crow which is becoming increasingly crunchy to me due to the backstory material. and if any of these qunari are a mage? even better. a dwarf of the mourn watch and dwarf veil jumper are also intriguing to me. im sure there'll be unique dialogue based on your race in the faction but i hope its more than just like "wow havent seen many qunari wardens" and is something that gives like insight or a chance to build backstory.
all of the class specializations seem cool as fuck to me im excited to see all of them. i can already see that warrior's reaper will be a fave for me and i think it'd fit well for a crow which warrior crow... love that. ooh! death caller grey warden?? kind of obsessed with that.
this was a really fun question to think about thank you for asking! and i hope this is what you meant by combos sdskdsds

KATIEEEEEEE TELL ME YOUR THOUGHTS ON VEILGUARDDDD
i added a read more because i started yapping to much and was like ok let’s hide all of this LMAO.
ok first of all… the obvious from dreadwolf to veilgaurd… i really like the change! now solas isn’t the main focus, but the veil & the evanuris (with two coming out of the veil in the trailer) are. i remember seeing a post MONTHS ago on twitter speculating that maybe solas would be built up as the main antagonist and then it gets resolved early on in game (similar to the breach/haven in dai), with the rest dealing with someone else and it seems to be the case! which imo, i will enjoy a LOT more because i don’t care much for solas and i a whole game revolving around trying to stop him or trying to “fix” him would’ve been tiring after a while. especially because in trespasser, basically EVERY companion disapproves of trying to save him. yet the first thing varric does is try to save the guy… bro YOU greatly disapproved!
the factions seem SO FUN!! antivan crows, shadow dragons, veil jumpers… i’m so excited to see how the factions effect the background and dialogue. game wise, we’ve only really seen grey wardens & the crows (i believe) so im super excited to choose between the factions. its also cool to see how they’re integrating the comics more into the games! and even the show, apparently red lyrium knight commander meredith will be in the game… i’m excited to see what they’re going to do with past companions. like surely zevran, fenris, and isabela will be making an appearance again? and merrill too, she had her own eluvian. i also wonder what part morrigan and kieran will play. also very curious to see if flemeth will be coming back!
bianca breaking… i’m terrified for what will happen to varric. i was watching that scene thinking he was going to die. and the fact they chose to share bianca breaking leaves me a little scared to what is going to happen after… i wonder if varric is going to die & if it will effect solas’s ideology. i’ve seen a couple posts circulating on twitter wondering if varric & solas will get pulled into the fade and have to fight their way out with whoever you chose to leave behind in dai. i think that would be interesting, but i wonder how they would be able to pull it off. i’ve also seen a couple posts wondering if you’ll have to choose between two characters again, and that is something that scares me a lot.
i’m very happy with the diversity in the companions and that you’ll have the option to romance. i’m also glad that companions will romance each other if you don’t start one, because that’s an aspect i liked!! of course im excited for the banter & party dialogue. and the baby griffon!!! how could i not be excited for the baby griffon!!! like griffons were thought to be extinct, and the first grey warden you see in the new game HAS ONE!! we are so back. the character designs are so beautiful too. taash having a crystal horn & her look being similar to rivani. neve’s hat. bellara’s bow. WE ARE SO BACK!!
the changed pride demon look was a little interesting but i can look past it. i’m not against the new art style, because i think it looked really good for minrathous! and im hoping it will look good across the board. i am very excited for the character creator. i’m hoping for piercings & tattoos to be added. and i’m hoping the cc is loads more inclusive than it has been in the past. if there’s 1 long hair option but 15 buzzed/shaved hair options im going to get so violent. i think the complaints about dragon age not being as “dark fantasy” are so unfounded. dragon age has never really been “dark fantasy”. i think it tried to be but it isn’t truly.
powers and combat look super cool. they went back to having the long & close range weapons like in dao. i wonder how melee combat will work with a mage, like will i have the option to hit people with a staff 😭😭 or use as a dagger as a conduit for magic. like that would be baller as fuck. hopefully the power wheel comes back. dai limiting me down to eight made me SO aggravated like come on 😭😭 i miss access to everything. straying away from dragon age keep is also certainly a choice! on one hand im glad, because it was SO tedious to fill out. but at the same time i wonder how we’re going to be able to choose everything that’s happened in pass games? a comic intro (similar to what mass effect 3 did) seems like it would take a long time to get through, especially considering the fact that dao took place over a decade (maybe even 2 decades?) ago within game.
i think going back to the linear and quest based areas is smart too. dai was TOO big and TOO open world. it was draining to get through every quest in a certain area and then go to the next one and have to do everything over again. however, after having spent the last 3 games running around ferelden, the matches, and orlais, i would LOVE to run around rivain, antiva, and minrathous. just for fun. the sneak peek showing minrathous had my jaw dropped. ferelden is so lame compared to minrathous. how was dorian able to do from minrathous to ferelden and survive.
i am going to stop now, mostly because i will keep going as i will keep thinking of things and i don’t want this getting any longer than it already has LOL but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! let me know what you think/are expecting/excited for/theories i would love to hear it all!!
