It's almost funny, how he never seemed to care.

It's almost funny, how his eyes always seemed to look through her. Never really seeing her.

Stephanie Lauter loved her dad. But that didn't mean she had to like him. His political tactics, his schemes. How he carefully measured every aspect of Steph's life, molding her into the perfect little political tool.

Days, weeks, months, and years had gone by where Steph wished that she could just get rid of all her issues. That she could step out of the limelight. Be her own person. She remembered once, in a pissy state of teenage angst, telling her dad that she wished he was dead.

But then he actually was.

Stephanie Lauter stood above the grave of Mayor Solomon Lauter, and she didn't know what to feel. How to feel. If she was supposed to feel.

There were no tears in her eyes.

She knew that her dad would hate that sort of weakness.

A hand rested on her shoulder. Steph turned her head to look at Peter, who stood beside her. Peter Spankoffski, who had lost his best friends. Peter Spankoffski, who managed to survive.

Peter Spankoffski. The one boy that Steph cherished most.

Just a few weeks ago, Steph had stood by his side as he buried Ruth and Richie. She'd held him as be cried, she'd ran her hands through his hair, kept his glasses propped on her head as she held him, let him cry out his pain.

She knew that he was there to do the same thing. But she wouldn't cry.

Not for Solomon Lauter.

But Steph didn't protest as Peter wrapped an arm around her shoulders, tucking her into his side.

"Steph...are you okay?" he asked, quietly.

Steph took a shaky breath, and murmured, "Yeah, Pete...I'm okay."

Was she? She didn't know.

What she did know is that Peter's side was warm, as was his arm wrapped around her. She felt safe in his arms. She really did. She felt safe with him. Even if he was a dork. Even if he wasn't this big burly jock. He was more than enough for her.

"Hey, Pete...?"

"Yeah, Steph?"

"Can we go home?"

"Of course, my love."

i’ve been coming up with different npmd ghost aus that were loosely based on julie and the phantoms (like very loosely) and then today i got struck with random inspiration for an au that more closely follows jatp and my brain would not shut up. now i have a bunch developed, so read if you’re interested. as a warning, it gets long and i ramble a bunch. i really just needed to get it out before my head exploded

this might not make sense if you haven’t seen the show, sorry. it follows the general plot of the show, but there are of course changes to fit with the npmd characters more and since the show was cancelled, there was never an ending so i’ll have to figure that out. as a stand in right now, this au is called “steph and the phantoms”

pete, richie, and ruth are sunset curve (their band name pending) pete is guitar, richie is drums, and ruth is vocals and keyboard. they’re teens in ‘95 and have finally gotten the courage and the gig to perform at the starlight. unfortunately, unknown to them, someone is trying to perform a spell and with the power of the black altar, it gets out of control. during the trios rehearsal the lights or something fall on them and they die.

cuts to 2020 where steph (she’s taking the julie role) is still the popular kid, but she’s still kinda a loner, not really that close to anyone. she’s been teaching herself how to play the bass in an effort to connect with her dead mom who she hardly knew. (her mom has more to do with this bc she was there at the starlight during the spell and that results in steph getting a touch of the gift when she’s born 7 years later)

steph finds some of her mom’s stuff that solomon kinda hid away and discovers one of the few cds the trio made. she plays it and the trio pops out and all four of them freak out. they were stuck in the black for 25 years but it felt like an hour for them.

the four of them figure out that they’re ghosts and only steph can see and hear them. and then they decide to become a band when they learn they can make their instruments appear and steph wants them to have the chance to really play since they couldn’t before they died.

with steph’s connections as the mayors daughter she gets them access to a small stage (or they are at the school auditorium or something) and they perform. (follows the show where the trio appears when they perform and disappears when the song ends.) but they are caught by someone at the tail end of a song and they see the ghosts disappear. steph gives the excuse that it’s a hologram, at the nerds’ suggestion. which kickstarts their band being able to perform in front of ppl.

they get gigs around town (hatchetfield is bigger than what it usually is, kinda more city like.) pete and steph are going to be like luke and julie. so lautski!

they learn more about the ghost stuff from the ghosts, max and grace. they take on willie’s role. caleb is most likely going to be wilbur cross and his goal is to do something evil with souls (still figuring it out.) a ghost is the continuation of someone’s soul (for this au) and cross needs a lot of soul power which makes the nerdy trio so enticing bc they can be seen by alive ppl which is not a normal ghost thing. grace and max are his main lapdogs that control hatchetfield’s ghost population. the two of them are stronger ghosts than normal bc they each died by a black altar sometime during the 2000’s. they feed cross intel for any leads on strong ghosts around town.

i plan to have halogear and platonic michie (aroace richie my beloved) where the relationship starts with max and grace showing interest bc they can be seen by a person and died by a black altar. they eventually grow very close in spite of this. the two are invited to a gig the band has and they realize how strong the nerdy trio is which makes them a big target for cross.

the two end up really liking the nerdy trio and steph (due to her touch of the gift and after max and grace spend a bunch of time with the nerds) is able to see them too.

the au fluctuates between the three pairs of relationships and all of them growing as friends while the soul stuff starts in the background and grows more important. cross eventually coerces the nerdy trio to make a deal so he can have their power. where they have a tattoo thing on them and if they disobey cross, they get jolted and after a bunch of jolts, they cease to exist.

his big evil plan is still something i’m working on, but definitely has ties to the libs and most likely pokey.

there’s more nuance to a bunch of stuff and this is already too long to go into a lot of the specifics. (but i will if ppl are interested in more!)

i’m not going to have flynn, carrie, bobby stealing songs, ray and carlos bc it doesn’t really fit. i don’t want an exact replica of the show and putting npmd characters in the concept should already change it a lot. i might borrow some plot lines, but it most likely is going to be different from the show.

i do want to do the unsaid emily subplot with pete, but it’s not his mom, it’s his brother. since pete needs to be a teen in ‘95, that means he is the older brother in this au. in pursuit of his dreams to be in a band he cut ties with his family and unfortunately ted. (little subplot where ted is such a sleazeball bc pete left and never came back to be a better influence)

that’s what i have for now, all of this came to me today and my mind is still buzzing. if you made it here thx!! im already obsessed with this concept and so down to bounce ideas around if anyone else is down too. if ppl want more i can definitely expand and i will probably write this one in the relatively near future, maybe! i really hope this kinda made sense.

best joke in tgwdlm? - augh, a hard one. idk if it's the BEST but i always lose it at the hivemind breaking out of unison and having to stop and find their notes/re-harmonise after not your seed (i've been there... SO many times)

strongest nightmare time episode - ok this is the part where i admit i am VERY behind on nightmare time and have only seen a few in random orders - my favourite of the ones i've seen is abstinence camp, though. i think it's a rlly strong, relatively self-contained story, and ofc i'm always down for a friday the 13th parody lmao. boy jerry and girl jeri are my little freaks and i love them (and ofc peter and steph my beloveds)

vibing with the lords in black? - i love all of them an unreasonable amount and would LOVE to hang out, honestly. i never stop singing so pokey would probably be fun company, and wiggly won my heart immediately since i LOVE possessed/evil toys (if the url wasn't a dead giveaway for that) and green is one of my fav colours. but honestly any of them!!! they're deliciously evil and i would love to chill (and then regret it when i inevitably face their torment BUT THAT'S A PROBLEM FOR FUTURE ME!)

opinion on webby - i haven't seen a ton of her but i think she's really cool, both conceptually and in the execution i have seen! i love how the visions she gives hannah are contextualised and start making sense slowly as you work through the show (which it took me AGES to figure out, admittedly, because i'm either eerily good or absolutely terrible at recalling dialogue, and fsr her prophecies always fell through my brain like a sieve)

favourite character introduced in black friday - i'm disqualifying wiggly bc we've established i love him already - honestly, it's a tie between linda monroe (one word: MOTHER) and ethan green (aka the sweetest motherfucker in hatchetfield, holy shit). i find both of their characters super compelling and also i'm very bisexual about both of them so !!!

were the npmd hatchetverse references fanservicey? - i mean... yeah? i don't super mind though, fanservice isn't inherently a bad thing. i do wish there was some way to watch a pro shot of the show as it was on stage instead (i Lost My Mind when i found out the gerald part was originally my favourite little freak boy jerry), but i've heard through the grapevine that there's apparently a way to get your hands on a digital ticket recording as a bonus feature or smthn similar, which is good enough for me. so whilst i do think they came on a little strong in some sections (particularly hatchet town), overall i didn't mind - the smaller call-backs don't really harm the show at all if you don't get them (e.g. richie's joke abt peter looking like the homeless guy downtown is still a funny jab without the knowledge of who exactly that homeless guy is and how he's related to peter) and for fans who have been waiting for years, it's an extra little reward. i've seen some people be incentivised to watch the previous shows so they'd understand the audience's reaction to certain lines, too, so there's that. tl;dr it is a LITTLE much sometimes but i don't personally mind it and thought they were all fun

most transgender hatchetfield couple - oh you are SPEAKING MY LANGUAGE, i LOVE transgenderifying characters. i think lautski (peter/steph) feel very explicitly-queer gen z t4t, if that makes any sense, but i wouldn't be me if i didn't at least mention my quietly-queer first loves paulkins (paul/emma). they're like the chill trans elders (as in the community title, not in reference to their age lmao they're like 30) to lautski's spitfire trans youth. if that makes literally ANY sense

On one of the last days of school the three ghosts would’ve decided it would be totally ok for them to fuck with everyone in the school,, Ruth would make the lights all fucked up and weirdly colored like at a rave and Richie would blast Cruel Angel’s Thesis (Evangelion opening) over the loud speaker,, yes

Steph and Pete, auuh my beloved Lautski,, the worst part is I always imagined the ghost being more of a presence rather than something visible or even audible, Pete could see Steph but Steph couldn’t see Pete, she’d have no idea if they were even there really she was just hoping, trusting that the properties of this Waylon built school would grant her contact with her beloved ghost.

They’d write letters to each other I think, Steph would leave a letter on that memorial for the nerds writing to Pete, how much she missed him and though hesitant Pete would write back, turning over the letter to the other side of the paper and leaving it where her locker was and they’d be penpals. Lovers separated by a whole plane of existence just hoping it may work you know

As for Max Jägerman,, I don’t think I understand him enough to say exactly how the nerds and Jägerman would interact but yes I love the idea that he’s also passively bound to the school now,, the two groups probably stay in their own lanes having their own interests and shit but Max will on occasion bother the nerds, he knows he can’t really hurt them anymore and there’s no point because he can’t really terrorize the school or anything (likely limited more than the nerds because of the LIB) so like,, he’ll just fly by them and scare the shit out of them or be really loud and obnoxious until they leave just for kicks yes yes!!

And I think while Richie definitely doesn’t feel at all comfortable around Max (Ruth and Peter wouldn’t either however I do think Richie feels the most unsafe due to his long time of torment, with Ruth a little more comfortable because her death was more mild, and Peter is unsure of his feelings but they’re mostly exhaustively negative) I think Max has some respect for Richie in the sense of him haunting Zeke the Nighthawk,, I mean, showing school spirit even after death? That’s impressive, somewhat. Respect.

AU idea where not only did Peter get shot after If I Loved You (Reprise),, but due to all three nerds dying on school grounds which were built up by the Waylons and would have mystical properties (I know, not realistic but let me dream) would all be passive ghosts haunting the school eternally.
