OKAY SO i saw this post a few days ago and checked the wiki page in question. the "ten times more Muggles than wizards" line was indeed added without a source in 2015 and no matter how i searched i could only find info from interviews about the number of UK wizards and Hogwarts students (which JKR even says she may have gotten wrong bc we all know math isnt her strong suit).
so i was like, okay! probably just a misunderstanding or assumption someone made and no one noticed/questioned it. i even deleted it from the page since there was no source.
fast forward to today. i open HPMA. and what am i greeted with?
Tumblr media
RIGHT AFTER I DID ALL THAT??? AND THOUGHT IT JUST WASNT TRUE???? NOW A TERTIARY SOURCE MAKES IT CANON?????
of course ☝️🤓 there are some issues with this
lots of people dont like referring to the games as a source which i totally understand as it has its own team of writers and i doubt theyre running everything by jkr to make sure its accurate, so
there is one piece of trivia on the wiki that says its possible that the HPMA devs may be looking at the wiki for info, so it is possible that they used the original unsourced line in the wiki as a reference and so creates a kind of horrifying feedback loop where fanon on the wiki (that isnt caught) may be 'made canon' in future adaptations. which is... questionable, but not so different from the writing teams of the games just coming up with their own shit which becomes canon because theyre 'official' (IM STILL MAD ABOUT THAT FUCKASS VANISHING SPELL NETEASE), but hey, thaaats why its a tertiary source and not as reliable/relevant a source for metas/fics/whathaveyou!
this info is given to us by a random Ministry employee who could be exaggerating or have their own assumptions, so, not really a reliable or definite number
all in all you can probably definitely just ignore it. but damn, i was so shocked to see it because id just gone on a deep dive the other day, because this post just happened to be made the other day. wild
does this mean i should put the line back into the wiki article now that theres a '''canon''' source for it? ...nah. i dont respect HPMA's writing team enough
I am being bullied into making hp meta about wizarding population. So I decided to straighten out my sources. And one of the sources was about Rowling mentioning in one interview that wizard population is one tenth of muggles.
It was mentioned in the vein Rowling being crazy as usual, and I didn't question it much. But I can find any original sources to back it up. Harry potter wiki confidently mentions it without citation ("It was stated that there were ten times more Muggles than wizards in the world.") Few other people mention it as fact that Rowling said it somewhere. One person calls it a rumour (also not able to find citation).
I asked Reddit and they basically laughed at it and called it a fan theory. Thoughts? Opinions?
I want to believe the best about community, but I start to doubt validity of this statement. Any ideas where this "rumour"(?) originates?
