man. I stopped writing fic a few years ago, coinciding with the rise of ppl in fandom yelling about problematic ships and dark content and terrible takes about how writing about abuse is normalizing it.

anyway, now I'm done reading all 700 chapters of naruto in 10 days (which is soooo normal btw). so I am wading into ao3 for fics that take even 10% of naruto's worldbuilding seriously: which would involve acknowledging eugenics, power dynamics, children not being allowed to be children, etc. but oh my god. it's BLEAK out there.

like did the rise of ppl yelling about scare off all the authors who can write what I wanna read. the fics that I'm finding that DO go in on the deranged worldbuilding and its resulting relationship dynamics are all written by ao3 authors who chose "Anonymous" AND disabled their comments. like. how am I supposed to tell you that your 500 words on [insert whatever """bad""" content] changed my brain!! how do I find you and ask you for more!!

I'm like. a lot more annoyed by this than I expected. I want to find these authors! I want to thank them for their fic! but seeing the other type of comments in the pairing tag, I think they're clearly trying to avoid a truly alarming amount of backlash for just writing something gross for fun!!!!!

and it's gotten to the point where I opened up the Naruto tag on ff.net - a godless place - and scrolled back to earlier years like 2007 to 2010 wow!! people were just writing literally whatever (rape! pedophilia! incest! you name it!) without care, without being worried about getting insults and suicide baited. like are you forreal!!!

I'm so mad omg. I want to find these anonymous ao3 authors. but now I pay the consequences for years of absolute dipshit behaviour trying to police FICTIONAL CONTENT ABOUT MANGA CHARACTERS.

What are your favorite things/takes about fanfiction? (suggestions for a talkshow!!) Please help

my friend and I are starting a talk show on our college radio station about fanfiction.

we, of course, are lovers of fanfiction and fandom culture, but we’ve been having a hard time coming up with topics because…. we have such different tastes!

I grew up on here and scrolling through ff.net before i discovered ao3, i was a childhood superwholock fan and watched a lot of anime. more recently I am a huge fan of star trek and have been reading a lot of k/s. i never read xReaders or things with celebrities. (no hate of course, i just am drawn to transformative works with fictional characters) (mainly wlw mlm and gen)

my co-host on the other hand grew up reading things like Justin bieber gets ariana grande pregnant xreaders. i think she reads more things with celebrities and either het or lesbian ships.

like she was reading draco/hermione and i was reading drarry in middle school. there’s a link there but it is rife with tension.

honestly it’s like being introduced to a whole new world of fandom! but we kinda have no common experiences. but i feel like this combo gives us the ability to cover a lot of ground.

anyway! if you were to have or listen to a talk show about fanfiction what would you want to talk about? we are working on a syllabus so please comment/repost with your suggestions!!!

sebastian is exceptional with a sniper rifle. his aim, his patience, his measurements... it's the only, only thing i will "godmod" on this blog and say you just cannot outshoot him when it comes to sniper rifles (and only sniper rifles). he's very good with other types of weapons, sure, but he's an impossibly good marksman. one of the best sharpshooters in the world.

on the flip side, you can kick his ass in hand to hand combat. he is lousy at it. he's six foot five so he can fake his way through a fight by sheer intimidation with his size (or using objects around him like chairs or tables to fight off an attacker), but he's not a fist-fighter. he's shit at it. he's so shit, he's actively taking krav maga classes to improve his skills, but he remains a blatant amateur that you could very easily take down. he's the type to bring a pistol to a fist fight... and he's not above running away from a problem, because he's very good at that, too.

What do people really think about authors including details from their personal life in their author's notes?

I know I do it sometimes when I ramble. Plus I like to look back on my own work later and see what was going on with me at that point in my life. I don't really mind it when other writers do it because I think it's kind of fun.

I'm curious to see what others think though. Thoughts?

With the portals closed behind him and Lex Foster already in possession of his firearm, there wasn't anything left for John Mcnamara to do for his country (or the world in general). This left him in the unfortunate position of being trapped in the Black and White (somehow *not* dissolving?) with his old-mentor-turned-Wiggly-disciple and, of course, the great Wiggly himself. This is not a fun position in which to be.

I’m rewatching hunter x hunter for the first time in 10? years and it’s been delightful. My favorite thing is I’m reaching the point where Killua definitely has some level of crush on Gon and it’s so cute.

However, it makes me want fanfiction set 5-10 years into the future. Like killua has finally reached the point where he just can’t take how cute and oblivious Gon is and explosively confesses in anger.

Or Gon has been assuming they’ve been dating for years now because of x, y, z and has been struggling with the idea that maybe they haven’t kissed yet (or again) because Killua is ace or maybe that he’s just not actually interested in him.

Or Gon just assuming that being casually obsessed/codependent with his best friend isn’t anything deeper until the metaphorical 2x4 hits and immediately confesses.

Or Killua’s various methods for getting rid of Gon’s fans/stalkers

Or Killua testing the boundaries of platonic/ romantic and paying attention to Gon’s reactions

Or is about aroace Gon being queer platonic partners with Killua and how they make that work for them

Or just a case type fic where they’re working together and just casually are life partners!

the pattern is so clear here, i'm laughing lmao. 😂 well, i seem to start with the (one of the) main character's name for one. also i'm apparently more comfortable getting right down to it? not necessarily with starting with action proper, but it looks like i like to start with my characters already doing something/having done something/being about to do something. or by implying through them something already has happened, or, like. idk, but it's like they didn't come to life the very instant the story starts and they were already existing before and living their lives? or something haha.

on another note, it's not something i had realized AT ALL i do ezfsfds. but also i'm not surprised because characters dynamics and characters' inspection/exploration is my bread and butter and my favorite thing to write about <3
