RONDA ROUSEY’S STORY: THROUGH MY FATHER’S EYES (2016)

Written and directed by the former ex-international boxing champion Gary Stretch, the documentary tells the story of Ronda Rousey, the first female UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) champion of the world. The film isn’t perfect, the lighting is often off, the music is cheesy and the interviews may seem kind of amateurish sometimes, but it remains very moving and is the only film about Ronda. Known for being a very feminine and attractive woman, the film goes deeper than just showing a beautiful girl that can throw a punch. It portrays a very smart, determined and hard-working athlete that made her name in a male-dominated field and certainly didn’t have it easy growing up. Her first breath was a struggle to survive, as Ronda was born with her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. For a split second, Ronda stopped breathing, but her will to survive made her fight for her life. The incident was so impactful that for six years, Ronda couldn’t speak properly. Only her sister understood her mumbled words. She became a very frustrated, self-deprecating girl, who was in her own little world and could only depend on herself.

When she was only eight, her father, whom she was very close to, committed suicide. Indeed, he found out he had a fatal degenerative disease that was going to weaken him to death, and didn’t want his three daughters to see him weak. At the same time, Ronda took up judo and was noticeably better than the other girls. She developed her own style and her mother took her to an all-Armenian men mixed martial arts gym, where she got tougher and tougher. She learned from the best and trained with bigger and stronger men than her. At only 21, she won a bronze medal in the Olympics in judo, came back, struggled with homelessness, started MMA at a time when Dana White, the UFC President said no women will ever fight in his MMA organization. Two years later, he made Ronda the main event at her first pro UFC fight. She won within 50 seconds with her famous arm-bar.

The documentary is very intimate and touching, but still inspiring, because we really dig deep to understand how Ronda finds her mental strength and sense of discipline. The film was available on Netflix until recently, but can still be found on streaming websites.

Special Containment Procedures: All instances of SCP-039 are to be contained in Site-77's Wilderness Observation Chamber-2B. At least two (2) security personnel are to monitor the interior and exterior of SCP-039's chamber, and are to rotate every six (6) hours. Staff members may not access SCP-039's chamber without an accompanying escort from site security, and may only do so for research purposes, or for the examination of the chamber for containment sabotage or contraband, which is to occur weekly.

As of 9-18-20██, SCP-039-8 has become pregnant; responsibility for its containment has been reassigned to personnel in the veterinary observation wing.

Description: SCP-039 consists of twenty-three (23) instances of Nasalis larvatus, or proboscis monkey, who have been subject to radical anatomical changes. The eyes and mouths of SCP-039 are absent, leaving the face bare save for the nose and its accompanying nasal passages. Instances of SCP-039 possess acute auditory and tactile sense to compensate for a lack of eyes, relying mostly on physical contact with objects to perceive them, and on loud nasal snorts as a sort of echolocation to help them navigate in their environment. Necropsies have also revealed the digestive system to be absent; how instances of SCP-039 obtain nutrition — or, alternately, how they survive without it — is still a subject of research.

Instances of SCP-039 display signs of sapience, examples of which include communication via nasal snorts, an understanding of spoken English, and a complex understanding of machinery. Adult instances have demonstrated the ability to operate mechanical tools, and possess the ability to repair and manufacture various pieces of technology, such as disassembling and reassembling an internal combustion engine, and efficiently wiring a small apartment room. Testing has shown that SCP-039 appear to work more efficiently individually, rather than in groups, as instances of SCP-039 will often become distracted by one another.

Occasionally when working, instances of SCP-039 will clutch their abdomens and emit distressed vocalizations. If food is located nearby, they will attempt to smear their faces with the substance. It is currently hypothesized that this indicates that SCP-039 is the result of artificial manipulation of normal Nasalis larvatus specimens, with documents recovered during containment supporting this hypothesis. (see Addendum 039-A)

SCP-039 are capable of reproduction and gestation not unlike Nasalis larvatus; as of the time of this writing, five (5) instances of SCP-039 have been born. SCP-039 show a very close bond among their species, with newborns often being cared for by all capable adults. New instances are born with anatomical anomalies similar to other instances of SCP-039, but lack the knowledge of other instances. Parent instances will educate newborns on communication and basic skills until they reach the age of six (6) months, at which point technological ability will be taught by other adult instances.

SCP-039 were recovered from an uninhabited research facility fifty (50) kilometers from the nearby town of ████████, Nevada. Documents recovered during containment placed ownership of the facility under ██████ █████, a company funding research for the advancement of natural human ability. Twenty (20) instances of SCP-039 had been apparently living in and maintaining the facility for an unknown period of time. Additional recovered documents indicate that a project was being conducted to augment human intelligence. This project appears to have been cancelled shortly before the company's collapse, with the assets sold to an unnamed group. Further research into ██████ █████ and the groups that acquired its assets has revealed several other anomalous objects, including SCP-1513.

Addendum 039-A: One additional instance of SCP-039 was discovered during containment operations of SCP-1328. Agents are currently following up on any reports indicating the existence of further instances outside of containment.

Addendum 039-B: Several documents recovered during initial containment appear to detail the early prototyping stage of SCP-039's development. Research has begun to develop a way to recreate the process that creates new SCP-039 instances; however, the damage the notes had accumulated prior to containment has rendered many of them unreadable.

We tried removing the ocular organs, and just having them work by memory. After a couple of inconclusive trials, we actually got one up to the point where it scored almost as high as the control test. We've decided to move forward with this initiative, and if successful apply it to all specimens.

EDIT: An update on this one. It seems the removal of sight has increased the tactile sensitivity of most of the specimens, and remarkably, this has brought the initial test subjects up to a level of productivity that exceeds the expected result. As such, we will be applying the changes to all available specimens. Some of them didn't take to it, but they're still good for spare parts. In the meantime, we've put them in storage.

After the success of the eyeball thing, Damien suggested that we could increase productivity by increasing auditory sensitivity. As long as they stayed in the factory they'd be fine, since there isn't much here to overwhelm the ears. Testing starts in a week or so.

A massive success! With the elimination of sight and the need for food, and with the amplification of hearing and touch, we've managed a total boost of 211% over our initial test subjects. Management has seen fit to give our division extra time to finish the project. And to think that we were sold this project for a lark! Man, I feel like dancing on air.

EDIT: Small incident today. One of the specimens was out of his pen, and had grabbed a couple of tools. We put him back in, and sealed it up again. Alan says he'll take another look at the doors tomorrow.

More than a year after Facebook clamped down on how much personal data third parties could see, the company has found some app developers still had access to people's data through Facebook Groups. Chance the Rapper's Mayoral Endorsement Is a Pretty Big Deal

Chance the Rapper has 7.9 million Twitter followers — more, it’s safe to say, than all 17 candidates for mayor of Chicago combined. Right now, they’re all reading about a woman who until today was one of the race’s more obscure entries: Amara Enyia, the 35-year-old director of the Austin Chamber of Commerce, and a former policy analyst for Mayor Richard M. Daley. (At the time of this writing, Enyia has 2,944 Twitter followers.)

This morning, on the second floor of City Hall, in front of a dozen TV cameras and twice as many reporters, the hip-hop star gave Enyia what is probably the second most valuable mayoral endorsement out there, after only Barack Obama’s. Chance the Rapper is the most famous person who actually lives in Chicago, and he connects with young people who might not otherwise vote for a mayoral candidate.

“Chicago needs new leadership,” said Chance, wearing his trademark “3” cap at the podium. “It needs a new mayor, so I’m proud to announce that I will not be running for mayor.”

The crowd cramming the hallway outside the City Council chambers laughed, and Chance went on: “It was a lot of different candidates that expressed their worries about me not endorsing them — because they have a higher percentage chance or they were higher in the polls or had more recognition in their name. But I’d like to say, very narcissistically, [that] if I back you, you have a chance. I want to work with somebody that’s about change, that’s about our community, that’s about equity.”

And with that, he backed Enyia.

What’s so significant about Chance’s endorsement is that it represents a generational change, not just in Chicago politics, but in his own family. Last month, Chance’s father, Ken Bennett — an old-school politico who served as an aide to Harold Washington, Barack Obama, and Rahm Emanuel — emceed Toni Preckwinkle’s mayoral announcement at the Chicago Lake Shore Hotel in Hyde Park. That hotel, those in attendance were reminded, was also the site of Washington’s mayoral announcement, and the kickoff of Obama’s campaign for state senate. It was clear that Preckwinkle was hoping to reassemble Washington’s coalition of African-Americans, Latinos, and white liberals — a goal that still motivates aging Chicago progressives today.

But Washington is the avatar of an older generation. The youngest Chicagoan who could have voted for him in 1987 will be 50 years old by next year’s election.

At the Hyde Park event, Bennett talked of meeting Preckwinkle while she was an alderman in the 4th Ward. He said he saw her as “that change agent, that reformer in Chicago [who] was going to take on [the] system of government that has historically locked out individuals throughout the city.”

But that was an earlier version of Toni Preckwinkle — before she raised sales taxes as president of the Cook County Board, and before she endorsed Joe Berrios for county assessor. From Bitconnect to SIM-Swap Swindling: 2018's Biggest Scams

2018 will long be remembered as the start of a significant cryptocurrency bear market, but the declining market still provided opportunities for scam artists to snag unwary investors.

Given that 2017 was a breakout year for Bitcoin (BTC) and the likes, investors were clamoring to enter the fray as the price of cryptocurrencies skyrocketed toward the end of the year.

With such a positive environment, businesses and developers looked to leverage blockchain technology for new projects, leading to a boom of new initial coin offerings (ICO) that has collectively raised more than $20 billion since the beginning of 2017.

This provided the right atmosphere for more nefarious individuals to set up scam operations looking to fleece unsuspecting victims.

The modus operandi varied from project to project, but there was no shortage of conventional multi-level marketing and pyramid schemes, as well as pump-and-dump operations.

As the year has come to a close, it is worthwhile to take a look at some the biggest scams of 2018, as well as some of weirdest and outright ridiculous schemes.

Bitconnect falls

Bitconnect will go down as one of the biggest scams the crypto world has ever seen, but the shady project saw its eventual end at the beginning of 2018.

Thousands of investors were duped by the platform, which promised impressive returns on a lending scheme using its own native token.

The worst fears were realized when the anonymous creators of the program sold their coins and made off with the reserves of BTC — leading to class action lawsuits from a number of affected investors.

The scale of Bitconnect’s influence spanned across several continents, leaving investors around the world dealing with losses.

Pump me up!

As recent research from the Social Science Research Network suggests, price manipulation of various projects is still rife among the cryptocurrency community.

Culprits make use of messaging applications like Discord and Telegram to orchestrate price hikes of certain crypto tokens in order to sell their own holdings for a profit.

According to the findings, researchers identified 1,051 and 3,767 pump-and-dumps schemes on Discord and Telegram respectively, indicating just how prevalent this illegal practice has become.  As per current regulations, this practice amounts to securities fraud under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Seсcurities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

While many of these schemes targeted a variety of altcoins, Bitcoin was not immune to orchestrated buying groups operating through various chat groups.

The research identified at least 82 pump schemes targeting BTC on these two apps in 2018, although that amounted to just over 1 percent of total pump signals.

Social media shenanigans

Social media networks have also become a crucial tool for criminals to prey on unwise investors.

A prime example was the hacking of verified Twitter accounts that were then used to promote fraudulent money-raising schemes.

The latest instance saw a number of accounts impersonating Tesla founder Elon Musk, promoting a Bitcoin fundraising scheme.  One of these Bitcoin wallets used in the scam raised over $150,000, showing how many people fell for the authenticity of a “verified” account.

It certainly wasn’t the first time hackers had taken control of prominent accounts in 2018. At the beginning of the year, Litecoin founder Charlie Lee had a number impersonators setting up accounts on Twitter, promoting fake LTC giveaways.

Telegram founder Pavel Durov was also a victim, as a number of accounts looked to take advantage of some downtime of the Telegram app, setting up fake accounts offering crypto giveaways for their support.

Sim-swapping whiz kid nabbed

19-year-old Xzavyer Narvaez made headlines in August, after he was identified as the perpetrator of an elaborate sim-swap heist that saw more than $1 million worth of BTC stolen.

According to reports, the teen stole phone numbers and used them to gain access to the social media and financial accounts of his victims. He would do this by performing a “sim-swap” in order to take control of accounts on his own devices.

Investigators allege that Narvaez’s Bittrex crypto wallet had received over 157 BTC between March and June 2018.

Narvaez faces charges on four counts of using personal identifying information without authorization; four counts of altering and damaging computer data with intent to defraud or obtain money, and grand theft of personal property of a value over $950,000, according to court documents.

If not for his flashy spending of his ill-gotten gains, which included the purchase of a McLaren sports car, and his brazen use of the same device to process over 20 sim-swaps, Narvaez may have gotten away with his crimes.

The purchase of the $200,000 vehicle, which was made using BitPay, also helped authorities build a case against Narvaez.

Narvaez is not the only perpetrator to be arrested for stealing large amounts of crypto through the use of sim-swaps.

According to Krebs On Security, police arrested a man in August believed to be part of a cross-state syndicate involving nine suspects that used sim-swapping to steal large amounts of cryptocurrencies from his victims.

Vietnamese investors swindled by iFan, Pincoin

In April 2018, news broke of a massive ICO scam that had affected 32,000 investors in Vietnam.

The fraud was touted as one of the biggest to affect the crypto community, as $660 million of investors’ money had been stolen by two separate ICOs, run by a parent company in Ho Chi Minh City.

Modern Tech operated two projects, iFan and Pincoin, which duped investors before they could alert authorities. The owners liquidated the company and vacated their offices in the city by the time affected investors lobbied to get their money back.

iFan was touted as a social networking platform for celebrities to promote content and merchandise to fans around the world.

Modern Tech was promising users in Vietnam 48 percent returns monthly for iFan tokens, but they had to make an initial investment of $1,000. Furthermore, users were given an 8 percent commission for referring new investors.

Pincoin, an ERC-20 token powering the PIN project, promised users up to 40 percent monthly return on investments on the landing page of the website. The project promised to build an online platform powered by cryptocurrency and blockchain to provide an advertising network, auction and investment portal, and peer-to-peer (p2p) marketplace, among other offerings.

GAW, Paycoin Ponzi operator jailed

After a protracted legal battle, Homero Joshua Garza, the CEO of now defunct GAW miners and Paycoin cloud mining, was sentenced to 21 months in jail in September 2018. His offences date back to 2015, when he was found guilty of running Ponzi schemes.

Both projects were setup that year, but within months, GAW was accused of being a Ponzi scheme, leading to its closure in 2015.

The developers of GAW also created Paycoin, a cloud-mined cryptocurrency.

Taiwanese scam outed by Finnish investor

In August 2018, Taiwanese authorities acted on information $24 million crypto scam that had taken advantage of wealthy offshore investors.

Thai citizen Prinya Jaravijit was detained in August by authorities, suspected as the main culprit in the investment scam targeting Finnish investor Aarni Otava Saarimaa and his Thai business partner Chonnikan Kaewkasee.

The pair had alerted authorities after they’d failed to receive dividends from investments made with Jaravijit and nine other suspects.

The investors believed that their $24 million would be pumped into the casino- and gambling-focused cryptocurrency Dragon Coin (DRG). After parting ways with the funds, the pair never received any dividends from the so-called investment, a proof of investment in DRG, nor were they invited to shareholders meetings.

The case gained international attention when Jinya’s younger brother, Jiratpisit “Boom” Jaravijit, a well-known soap-opera actor, was detained in August.

Sniffing out the perpetrators

While the number of fraudulent operations may be startling, there seems to have been some real success by authorities looking to take action and protect investors.

U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission chairman Christopher Giancarlo said the organization had seen an increase in the amount of actions and fines taken against fraudulent projects, including the cryptocurrency sector.

“We have not been shy to take these cases to trial, winning significant trial victories in this area over the past year — including a precedent setting victory in a trial involving Bitcoin (BTC) fraud.”

While financial regulators and authorities may have been dishing out fines, conventional authorities made a number of high-profile arrests during the course of the year, as Cointelegraph has previously reported.

Some of the ring leaders have been included in this article, but these arrests show that even the anonymous characteristics of cryptocurrencies can’t completely hide the paper trails of illicit activities.

As regulators gain a better understanding of the ins and outs of cryptocurrencies and ICOs, the prevalence of these types of crimes could very well drop.

However, these stories show that investors need to be cautious with their crypto and make sure that due diligence is done when investing.
