Tumblr Aether Revolt Set Review - Green
Aetherwind Basker
S- MAKE THE GIANT LIZARD BIGGER
A- SHUN THAT IS LITERALLY THE PLOT OF GODZILLA, NO!!!! BP - This card is so weird, why is there a giant lizard on Kaladesh? Oh well...The card is pretty neat and is a HUGE limited bomb! You can get MASSIVE energy with this, it's crazy. But being so costy it won't see any play outside of limited & casual...
IG - A completely fair and reasonable hit for Aetherworks Marvel that probably doesn’t do anything in the format, despite how efficient it is with energy.
Aid from the Cowl
S- So I like this card. It's an interesting card. I can use my favorite tactic, blink, to bring out more stuff without losing anything. Might have to look into that...
BP - Interesting card, that's the least I can say. It reminds me of Lurking Predators. For sure this will find many homes in EDH, I don't think it's going to do anything else, the randomness of it all makes it less playable in other formats. Oh well!
LU - This card seems okay. With it being only on your turn, it will be too late for most decks.
IG - Tempting effect, yet it doesn’t strike me as giving a payoff that’s better than Aetherworks Marvel.
Greenbelt Rampager
BP - R&D is REALLY pushing this energy deck into our face! Seriously this card is very very good! In any Temur Energy deck you WILL get a 3/4 for 1cmc, which is better than Goyf!! This card is sooooooo good, seriously.
LU - Interesting card. Good for one mana, and doesn't die to Yahenni's Expertise. Will probably see play in R/G Energy.
IG - This is a tough card to analyze. GR Energy Aggro is likely the best home, but this is essentially a two drop, either comboing with itself or a Attune with Aether. This is still an excellent rate for this card and can also trigger Revolt in the right situation.
Greenwheel Liberator
BP - This card is alright, if it was a 1/2 instead of a 2/1 it could see play in modern, since triggering Revolt is super easy with fetches and a 3/4 is outside of bolt range but a 4/3 is more vulnerable. The card is still good and I wouldn't be surprised if it saw modern play, a 4/3 for 2cmc is nothing to scuff at!
LU - Not bad. Better late game than a lot of other aggro 2-drops, but energy decks will likely play Longtusk Cub over this.
= IG - Much like Greenbelt Rampager isn’t really a one-drop, this isn’t really a two drop. However, this could make some noise in eternal formats with fetchlands.
Heroic Intervention
A- Look at this net, that I just found!
S- I think this is a great fog alternative in a creature deck
BP - This card is going straight into the Energy deck, there is NO question about it. I might even put it into my Storm Colossus deck just because I can. Giving all your PERMANENTS, not just creatures, PERMANENTS hexproof AND indestructible?? For 2cmc??? Yes please!
LU - Great card. Helps against Fumigate and even Baral's Expertise. Will see play in most green decks.
IG - Member Rootborn Defenses? I member. This is better than Rootborn Defenses and is better than the Standard-legal Make a Stand. However, if Yaheeni’s Expertise becomes the standard for control decks, this may never get a chance.
Hidden Herbalists
A- *super deadpan * They're growing weed
BP - I just want to mention this card, even though I don't think it's that good, a lot of people are talking about this. Yes, you can easily make so that your deck plays 8 Burning Tree Emissary with this card, but I don't know if the decks really want 8. If you're into that though this is a nice card.
IG - Maybe a fairer, narrower Burning-Tree Emissary? Not being able to chain these into Reckless Bushwhacker is disappointing, too.
Maulfist Revolutionary
BP - Okay, so I just want to talk about this card because, I don't know who the character on the art is, but she's my wife now. Seriously though the card is pretty neat; 3/3 trampler for 3 is interesting, and when she comes into play or dies you can proliferate a counter, which is neat.
IG - Good rate, bonus keyword, relevant creature type. Casting cost is a bit rough, but this has all the makings of a solid roleplay in Standard.
Prey Upon
BP - The good old 1cmc fight card is back baby! I love this card and it's such an efficient removal spell!! The energy decks are probably happy, the few werewolf players out there are probably screaming of joy and all the draft players are grinding their teeth! This card is so cool.
IG - Not currently seeing any play in Standard, but this is the kind of effect that’s nice to keep in the format.
Rishkar, Peema Renegade
S- Great etb ability and has an ability to make mana dorks regardless of how they got the counters. Good card.
BP - This card is interesting, you get to pump up 2 creatures when he comes in and all your pumped creatures become mana dorks. EDH comes to mind as to where this card will find a home, but I'm sure some people will find a standard deck to make this work; probably not tier 1, but I'm sure there is something to do with it.
LU - My least favorite of the legendary creature cycle. Two counters will not impact that much, and we already have Cryptolith Rite for helping with ramp.
IG - This is a complicated card. If there are enough +1/+1 counters being generated, this could be a huge ramp spell and even by itself, it makes an Elvish Mystic out of itself and one other creature. However, given that the “top” of the format is currently Emrakul and there are several decks that are very efficient at playing that card ahead of schedule, it may be a little while before this card sees play. (Edit: Oh, past IntrepidGuardian. There’s… so much I have to tell you. And yet, tragically, I cannot.)
Rishkar's Expertise
BP - Very interesting card! It might be costy, but for 6cmc you'll draw on average 3 cards (that depends on the deck, sometimes more, sometimes less) and will play something of 5cmc for free. So it's like if you cast the free spell and paid 1 to draw 3 cards (on average). This card, in my opinion, is very strong. I hope it seems play because I feel like it should.
LU - Very different card. More situational than other expertise cards. I don't think it will see much play.
IG - A narrow card despite how many cards you can cast off of it. This is mostly a sideboard card for green-based midrange mirrors.
