I didn’t get around to posting last week’s liveblog of Rhythm of War, so I’m going to post both chapters 14 and 15 here. Let’s get to it!
Some of the Fused on Braize slumbered...
SLUMBERED?
Timbre pulsed a warning inside her, and Venli forcibly resisted those instincts. It was not easy. Perhaps as a Surgebinder, she should have been naturally selfless. Naturally noble. Like Eshonai.
Ah, identity/Identity stuff. Fun.
fannahn-im, the Altered Ones
Cool, another type of Fused.
In that light, these tombs were a flagrant, wasteful act—the ultimate price for this show was paid not by the Nine, but by the poor singers they had killed to give them bodies.
Something something Marxism and the labor of the proletariat
She was both the very crust of the unimportant and the very dregs of the important.
I like this line.
Avendla was their name for Alethkar; Venli’s powers instantly knew the meaning of the word. Land of the Second Advance. Her abilities stopped there, however, and she couldn’t answer the more interesting question. Why was it called that?
Yeah, why DO they call Alethkar “Land of the Second Advance”? Hmm...
“You think I could be defeated by a common human?” the Pursuer demanded. “This Windrunner must be of the Fourth Ideal—something I was led to believe had not yet happened. Perhaps our reconnaissance teams have lost their edge, during the long time spent between Returns.”
HAHA GET FUCKED YOU GOT REKT BY KALADIN “ONLY SWORN THE THIRD IDEAL” STORMBLESSED
Each new wave of attacks had involved what was called a Return, when the Fused would descend to Roshar.
Yeah uh anyone else suspicious of the word “Return” bc that’s really similar to the Returned in Warbreaker.
None of them realize she’s trying to protect that Windrunner, Venli thought. Maybe she doesn’t realize it herself.
Leshwi has officially joined the Kaladin Protection Squad.
“There are few among them of the Fourth Ideal—perhaps only one individual—and they do not have full access to the tower, now that the Sibling is dead.”
Okay, first: who’s the one who might have sworn the Fourth Ideal? Is she referring to Kaladin or someone else??? No one we’ve seen has sworn the Fourth Ideal...
ALSO. S I B L I N G L O R E.
“You have nearly perfected the suppression fabrials,” Raboniel said. “Do not forget, it is technology I discovered from the tower itself thousands of years ago. I have a plan to use it in a more dramatic way. As the Sibling is essentially a deadeye, I should be able to turn the tower’s defenses against its owners.”
The Sibling is “essentially a deadeye.” But not an actual deadeye. But just a moment ago she said that the Sibling is dead. WHAT THE FUCK. GIVE ME LORE.
“We will need to lure the Elsecaller and the Bondsmith away. Their oaths may be advanced enough to push through the suppression, much as the Unmade have done at the tower in the past.”
First. What the fuck. Second, what the fuck???
“During the last Return, she developed a disease intended to kill all humans on the planet. Near the end, it was discovered that the disease would likely kill many singers as well. She released it anyway…only to find, to all of our fortunes, that it did not work as expected. Fewer than one in ten humans were killed, and one in a hundred singers.”
That’s a yikes but also how have we not heard of this illness yet?
“If you forget why you are fighting, then victory itself becomes the goal.”
Something something Journey before destination
“In addition, this endeavor will give me the opportunity to test some… theories I have developed while slumbering these last millennia.”
SLUMBERING
“Last time, her recklessness nearly cost us everything.”
GIVE. ME. THE. LORE.
***
Kaladin announced that Sigzil—with whom he’d conferred earlier in the day—would take over daily administration of the Windrunners, overseeing things like supplies and recruitment.
I am not surprised that Sigzil is now in charge.
“I know you are, sir. But I have no interest in taking ‘what I can get.’ And I don’t think you should force a spren into a bond. It will make for a bad precedent, sir.” He hummed a different rhythm. “You all name me a squire, but I can’t draw Stormlight like the rest. There’s a wedge between me and the Stormfather, I think. Strange. I expected prejudice from humans, but not from him… Anyway, I will wait for a spren who will bond me for who I am—and the honor I represent.”
Literally not at all surprised that Rlain is turning Yunfah down. I expected as much. That still means Yunfah is without a bond. Also, I wonder if Rlain will bond with a spren that’s not an honorspren. Rlain for Nightwatcher Bondsmith 2k20
Or maybe, another part of him thought, you could do what you promised him—and listen for once.
Yeah, Kaladin, you should listen to Rlain. Take a lesson from Lift in that.
“But you couldn’t give up the sword,” Kaladin said.
“Oh, I gave it up. I let go. Best mistake I ever made.”
Lmao I’m betting Zahel is referring to one veeeery specific sword.
100% not surprised that Zahel is doing stuff with cloth. That’s like Awakening 101.
Honestly this scene with Kaladin fighting Zahel in the clotheslines is wonderful. It’s cinematic, actually.
“I’m not confident anyone knows the answers. I figure I’ll let the people who care argue about it, and I’ll keep my head down and focus on my life right now.”
Agnostic Kaladin. I didn’t know I could love this man more but I do.
“I don’t have to believe,” the voice drifted back. “I know gods exist. I simply hate them.”
Lmao since on Nalthis he was considered a god.
“You want to know what I am? Well, I’m a lot of things. Tired, mostly.”
God what a mood
“That’s because Wit is an asshole.”
BEST FUCKING MOMENT OF RHYTHM OF WAR SO FAR
“Happened to your friend too. Up in the prison? The one with… that sword.”
Well, that answers two questions. One, what happened to Szeth after Oathbringer? Two, does Zahel know Szeth has Nightblood? Also, it seems that Szeth still has possession of Nightblood. Wonder how he managed to do that.
“She’s what I now call a Type One Invested entity. I decided that had to be the proper way to refer to them. Power that came alive on its own.”
“Type Two Invested entity. Dead man walking.”
Interesting. It seems based on Vasher’s BioChromatic entity scale, but not the same.
Kaladin frowned, trying to figure out why Zahel was telling him this.
Good question. Why IS Zahel telling him this?
“The longer one of us exists, the more like a spren we become. Consumed by a singular purpose, our minds bound and chained by our Intent. We’re spren masquerading as men. That’s why she takes our memories. She knows we aren’t the actual people who died, but something else given a corpse to inhabit…”
Sure, Zahel. Just drop us some fucking lore right here. We kinda already knew it but to have it laid out here is something else. But it’s still interesting, especially with the part about capital-I Intent, and Endowment taking memories.
***
Anyway, that’s chapters 14 and 15! Some interesting stuff going on, including what will probably be one of my favorite scenes in Rhythm of War.

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
Tumblr media
The Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archive #1) by Brandon Sanderson
So I’m still on my Cosmere bender, having started with The Final Empire (Mistborn #1) in October. Eight books – now nine, after finishing this one – later and… I’m still blown away. Sanderson’s skill, his worldbuilding, his character development…! There’s not enough praise I can heap on these books.
Summary:
Six years after the murder of King Gavilar, the Alethi kingdom is still at war with the mysterious Parshendi. With each highprince fighting on the Shattered Plains for his own glory and to earn Shardblades and Shardplate, the original purpose of the war – revenge for Gavilar – has slowly faded from their minds. For Brightlord Dalinar Kholin, however, the war isn’t his only challenge – strange storm-induced visions order him to reunite the highprinces and kingdom.
Slave Kaladin Stormblessed has just been sold to a new master, Brightlord Sadeas, who also fights on the Shattered Plains. Ordered to run as a bridgeman, the lowest of soldiers who are responsible for carrying chasm-spanning bridges into battle, the darkeyed Kaladin is lost. His faith in lighteyes has been shattered, he’s lost everyone he’s ever cared for, and he’s not expected to survive in his new role. But when mysterious things begin happening to Kaladin, he comes to learn that his part in the world is greater than he ever imagined.
Far across the sea in Jah Keved, Shallan Davar seeks out the scholar and heretic, Jasnah Kholin. Shallan’s father’s recent death has thrown their family into chaos as debts are being called in and a strange group begins making threats on the Davar family. Jasnah holds the key to the survival of Shallan’s family, but will Shallan be strong enough to do what she came to do?
* * *
Once again, the first book of the Stormlight Archive opens on a new world with new characters and a new system of magic. Roshar, a world of rock and stone, is probably the harshest of the cosmere worlds I’ve read (although Mistborn’s Lord Ruler era was pretty bad). The plants are rocklike, the animals are rocklike, and harsh highstorms can destroy anything in their path. Even rainwater has a sediment-like material (called crem) in it. As harsh as the world is, however, the peoples of Roshar have learned to survive.
The magic on Roshar is different as well. It’s not fueled by metals like in the Mistborn books. It’s not powered by breaths and color as it is in Warbreaker. It’s not even fueled by drawing Aons, such as in Elantris. No, magic in the Stormlight Archive is powered by… ta-da, Stormlight. A glowing power that is contained within gemstones which people trade as currency or use to light a darkened space. At this particular point in time in The Way of Kings, individuals who can harness Stormlight and use it are basically myth. Those who once held that power, the Knights Radiant, fell ages ago after abandoning mankind.
I think what I’m enjoying most about the magic of Stormlight Archive is that the magic truly has its limits. Very few people can use it. This means that not everyone is the same magical threat to each other; however, it makes those who can use it very dangerous to everyone else. And it truly is limited – you had to have Stormlight-infused spheres with you in order to Breathe in the Stormlight. Once those spheres are dun and the Stormlight has been spent, the user is out of power. Finally, since the ability to use these powers has, for the most part, been lost, no one is a true powerhouse using the abilities granted by Stormlight. Well, except for Szeth, but his full backstory hasn’t been told. Yet.
The Way of Kings is told through several POV’s. For the most part we hear from Shallan, Dalinar, and Kaladin. There are a few chapters from Szeth’s perspective, and those serve to explain the chaos he’s being ordered to sow throughout the lands. There are a few other perspectives we hear from, mostly between the parts in which the story is told. I enjoyed reading Kaladin’s sections the most. He had the greatest character development, in my opinion, but that’s also because we’re introduced to him when he’s practically at rock bottom – mentally, emotionally, and physically. The reasons behind his beaten-down state are completely valid, and he doesn’t just overcome his struggles in one event. Undoing as much harm as was done to him takes quite a bit of time. Dalinar’s POV was my second favorite. Brother to the murdered king and also known as The Blackthorn, Dalinar faces an entirely different kind of struggle. He’s the first to realize that the “war” is just being taken for a game among the other highprinces – even the current king, Elhokar, has been sucked into this game. With each vision that Dalinar sees in the highstorms, he becomes increasingly convinced that he must do something drastic to change the tides of war and unite the kingdom. But against and in preparation of what… he has yet to know. And finally, Shallan. The secluded daughter from the Davar family, Shallan has struck out on her own with the intent to steal Jasnah’s Soulcaster, a powerful object which can transform one substance into another. The Soulcaster is the only item that can help save her family, but Shallan’s worldly inexperience proves to be her first obstacle because in order to get close to Jasnah, Shallan must become her ward and assist with research. I can understand how Shallan’s lack of experience lends to her indecisiveness and frequent confusion (and it was gratifying to watch her grow as a scholar), but I just felt like there wasn’t enough to her as a character. Obviously, this is only book one in the series, so I’m hoping that Shallan develops further as the plot progresses.
There was something captivating and relatable about this new story in the cosmere, despite it being fantasy. Several times around reading, I found myself almost using “spren” in a sentence – and I did say “flamespren” aloud at one point to people who hadn’t read these books, and boy, did they look confused. Sanderson’s command of words is magnificent; despite introducing so many new terms and people and ideas, the words flow so smoothly that after a while, you hardly realize that you’re immersed in a new world while creationspren crowd about you.
Yes, I’m still dying to really learn about Hoid and what his purpose is in the cosmere, and I’ve been told that it will come in the next books. Well, it better come soon because his storytelling and world jumping is absolutely baffling to me.
There’s so much more I could get into, and I haven’t even started on my theories for what I hope will happen in the next books. But that would keep me from starting on the next book. “Journey before destination;” well, I’m greatly enjoying the journey that Brandon Sanderson’s books have taken me on, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
* * *
Speak again the ancient oaths:
Life before death.
Strength before weakness.
Journey before Destination.
and return to men the Shards they once bore.
The Knights Radiant must stand again.

Star Trek
I have never actually seen Star Trek, I mean I saw some clips here and there, know what it looks like and what some of the main characters are and roughly the plot but I never fully watched it and there is just way too much of it for me to know where to even start. I assume the TV show from the 60′s but Im not sure if most people actually got into it then or through the reboot that happened few years back. Anyway I know that it has some really cool looking aliens in it so intead of writing a review I’ll just have a look at some alien species from within star trek.
Tumblr media
Cheron
First appearance Star Trek: The Original Series “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield” (1969)
“When we first met the Cheron, there was only two members of this species left: Bele (played by the Riddler, the great Frank Gorshin) and Lokai. Bele was hunting Lokai whom Bele deemed a traitor after the planet Cheron was wiped out due to centuries of racial wars.
Apparently, some Cheron were black on the left and white on the right while other members of this advanced species possessed the opposite skin alignment. Due to this difference, the entire population — save Lokai and Bele — were eradicated. Bele hijacked the Enterprise and used his vast array of mental capabilities to hunt for Lokai.
The whole opposite was a thinly veiled, but powerful allusion to the destructive potential and sheer idiocy of racism — a message as powerful today as it was in the ’60s. Of course, you know I’m going to say that Mego made a Cheron doll, a toy I treasured in my childhood and called Oreo Man.”
See I like this species because of how simple it looks, like lets be honest it’s literally two dudes with their faces painted black and white straight through the middle. I like how they also explain that there was a lot of stigma beteen the members of the same species based on which side of their face is white and which is black to the point where the entire race killed each other off because of it, bit over the top but makes the point I guess.
“The inhabitants of Cheron were an extremely long-lived race; one representative of them was reputed to have pursued another such representative, an accused criminal from among his people, across the Milky Way Galaxy for over 50,000 years. Unfortunately, the species destroyed itself in a civil war caused by racism. There were only two known survivors by 2268, who the crew of the USS Enterprise believed would ultimately kill each other due to their hate.”
Tumblr media
Species 8472
First Appearance: “Star Trek: Voyager” Part 1 (1997)
“Species 8472 existed in an extra-dimensional bit of hell known as fluidic space. When the Borg discovered the fluidic dimension, the ever deadly race of cybernetic killers busted through the dimensions and attempted to assimilate Species 8472. 8472 was having none of that and fought back, creating weapons that could slay the Borg with ease. In fact, 8472 was able to destroy the Borg Cubes in seconds. (Man, that’s like taking down the Death Star with a single bullet.) Sadly, Species 8472 also took out many innocent Delta Quadrant planets, which forced the crew of Voyager to get involved.
The Borg and Voyager had to form an unlikely alliance to drive Species 8472 back to fluidic space. 8472 was one of the closet things Trek fans ever got to Lovecraft-like cosmic horrors, as even the Borg could not stand up to these waling nightmares. This species appeared a few more times on Voyager until Captain Janeway was able to broker a peace with these terrors that exist behind the fabric of time and space.”
I like this species because although it does have an overall humanoid looking body unlike most Star Trek species it does actually look alien rather than space human. I like how they want to make them creepy and from what I’ve seen they are always kept in shadows, and I also like how much taller they are compared to people just to add to that creepy factor. I want to make the aliens in my story kind of similar to how these guys look. But instead of being kept in shade they will just be a really dark grey or pitch black colour. And I also wanted to make them really tall just like this species but  Species 8472 looks really buff and muscly to be honest meanwhile I want my aliens to be tall and slender.
Tumblr media
Tholians
First appearance: Star Trek: The Original Series “The Tholian Web” (1968)
“Get a load of these psychedelic xenophobes. Yeah, the Tholians might look like a funky black light album cover come to life, but, really, they are brutal, territorial, hateful, and will do anything to keep other species out of Tholian territory. But, hey, they are known for the punctuality, so take heart in the fact that, when they kill you, it’ll be done in a timely fashion.
The Tholians cruise around their sector of space in geometric rainbow ships, making the aesthetic of the race more Yes album cover and less cool space despots. The Tholians first encountered the crew of the Enterprise when the USS Defiant flew too close to Tholian space.
Always protective of their borders, the Tholians phased the Defiant out of real space and into an interspace dimension. Kirk himself was phased out of time and space (for Shatner, it wouldn’t be the first or last time this happened), but Spock and the Enterprise were able to get their captain back and pimp-slap the Tholians.
The Enterprise under Jonathan Archer also ran afoul of these crystalline killers. The Tholians are a great example that in space, threats can come in any shape and even rainbows can kill you.”
“In 2152, the Tholians made an unusual move; they traveled far beyond their territory and actively sought to possess a 31st century Earth vessel discovered by the United Earth starship Enterprise NX-01, under the command of Jonathan Archer. Four Tholian ships intercepted and disabled the combat cruiser Tal'Kir, while it waited to rendezvous with Enterprise. They, in turn, attacked and defeated a Suliban fleet that was in pursuit of the arriving Earth ship. They then successfully removed the pod from Enterprise's possession, only to have the pod return to its proper time moments later. “
I like how original this species looks. I never seen an alien species in any media before that only communicates through technology with other species because they are too scared to actually go out and talk to them while at the same time be ready to anihilate anyone that crosses into their territory. I think it’s a quite good contrast of fearing something but not hesitating to defend yourself from it, it’s like the entire species represents both sides of the fight or flight concept.
Tumblr media
Jem’Hadar
First appearance: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine “The Jem’Hadar” (1994)
“One of the greatest and most efficiently deadly militaries the galaxy have ever seen, the foot soldiers of the Dominion — the Jem’Hadar — are also one of the more tragic species that can be found in the Trekverse.
Jem’Hadar reach maturity in the span of about three days. They are genetically programmed to be the perfect galactic foot soldier by their masters, the Vorta. To insure control, the Vorta have withheld an essential enzyme from the Jem’Hadar genetic makeup. This enzyme is supplied to the Jem’Hadar in the form of The White, a liquid that the Jem’Hadar has filtered into their systems through a tube in their necks. Essentially, Jem’Hadar are drug-addicted soldiers unleashed upon the galaxy.
The Jem’Hadar were the main Dominion force that laid siege to Deep Space Nine during the Dominion War and were nearly unstoppable. The need for The White was a religion to the Jem’Hadar, who became one of the most feared species in any quadrant.
Jem’Hadar are incredibly resilient and possess keen minds that help them plan for battles. Despite all this, most Jem’Hadar die very young due to the fact that they are essentially cannon fodder for the Dominion. Yet, the Jem’Hadar value duty and loyalty above all else as they embrace their lot as pawns of the Dominion. All for The White.”
I really like how this species looks beause from what I read they are bred soldiers so just thinking about the amount of masks and make up that got put into I don’t know even a dozen of these guys is quite astonishing. I like how they made them look like lizards as well with horns and scales it immediately tells the viewer through visuals that the Jem’Hadar are probably a fighter type. Also I like the decision to make them blue in colour which I assume was intentional because it serves two roles, first they are lizards s they are coldbooded making sense why blue is the color they go for and second the fact they are coldblooded could be viewed as a metaphor for the fact that they are soldiers that are bred to kill which kind of rounds up this species. I also would like to compare them to the Clone Troopers from star wars because the backstory for the Jem’hadar is literally the same as for the clones, they are both genetically made and bred to be soldiers for a war where thousands of them die but they still remain loyal to the cause.  But there is a major difference that I feel star trek didn’t look too far into, as Jem’hadar are said to grow up in 3 days and ready to serve meanwhile the clones do age in double the speed of a normal human but they spend their youth training to be soldiers which makes them more believable in my opinion.
Tumblr media
Andorians
First appearance: Star Trek: The Original Series “Journey to Babel” (1968)
“The Andorians are an aggressive yet advanced race that was one of the first alien races that formed the original Federation of Planets with humanity.
The Andorians have distinctive blue skin, white hair, and two protruding antennae. The blue skinned humanoids have an advanced armada and a long history of conflict with the Vulcans. This conflict was put aside as Andorians entered into the Federation and, with it, decades of peace. But peace wasn’t easy, as seen in Star Trek: Enterprise, in which Federation Captain Archer and Andorian Captain Thy’lek Shran developed an adversarial relationship that, thankfully, culminated in a friendship based on mutual respect.
The Andorians are more than a bit xenophobic as they refer to humans and Vulcans as “pink skins” and have a long standing mistrust of everything not Andorian. In fact, the Andorians don’t even trust their offshoot race, the very rarely encountered, white-skinned, psychic Aenar.
Enterprise is a bit unfairly-maligned by some Trekkers, but it will always be the show that took the Andorians from background characters to a narratively-explored race with deep contradictions. Of course, I need to mention that the Andorian was also one of the final Trek dolls Mego produced. It is very sparkly.”
I thought this species was kind of funny in design. They are supposed to be taken really seriously from what I read and the look on that guys face in the picture and are a very agressive and violent species meanwhie their design supports none of that. They have a very cold yet welcoming colour palette and are rocking a white afro with antenas on top of it, like I’m sorry and I know their species is kind of about prejudice but how can they be taken seriously if they dress like knights in space and look like they came back from an 80′s halloween party?
Tumblr media
Jaylah
First appearance: Star Treck Beyond (2016)
“Years prior to her encounter with the USS Enterprise crew, Jaylah and her family, like many before them, were attacked by Krall and imprisoned on Altamid. Jaylah and her family quickly realized that people were routinely taken from Krall's holding cells and killed, so they decided to attempt escape. During the attempt, Jaylah and her father were confronted by Krall's subordinate Manas. Jaylah's father stayed behind to hold off Manas, buying Jaylah time to flee at the cost of his own life. Jaylah discovered the derelict hulk of the Freedom-class USS Franklin and made her home in it. She hid it using holographic technology and set up multiple defensive traps in the surrounding area. Inside the vessel, she discovered a music player, from which she particularly liked music featuring "beats and shouting". She also learned how to speak English from the ship's records. In time, Jaylah became a formidable warrior, skilled in martial arts and in wielding a quarterstaff that doubled as a rifle.”
I feel there isn’t much information about her species because the entire species is literally named after this character and it’s a relativly new character as well so I assume no actual canon explenation exists for her species as of yet. But I do really like how she looks. She has an identical colour scheme to the cheron species I looked at but its executed so much better here with very cool looking face tatoos / markings that make her look actually interesting unlike the cherons that are literally dudes with their faces painted different colour on each side. She kind of reminds me of Darth Maul from star wars with the face markings but there they look so interesting like theres just something about that cold white with deep navy blue tinted black on top of it that just catches the eye more. I also like her eye contacts, I don’t know why I just feel the yellow eyes just complete the look nicely.

Ritual Inspiration: Sharon Salzberg
Sharon Salzberg's existence is gentle and also commanding, her rearing earnest as well as amusing, her writing personal and erudite. As an instructor as well as author, Salzberg consistently shows understanding and also acceptance of what it means to be human. She mentions her personal encounters with straightforward sensitivity, sharp intelligence and also a raw funny bone, generously revealing her pupils all over the world that it's feasible to integrate the concepts reflection right into day-to-day life, not just in the official sitting practice. When fulfilling Salzberg, you would have no concept that she is both a New York Times best-selling author and one of the most prominent instructors of Buddhism in the West, her temperament is loosened up as well as modest, also as she has an extraordinary deepness of understanding concerning both Vipassana (mindfulness) and metta (loving-kindness) methods, as well as has led meditation hideaways all over the world for even more compared to 30 years.
Born in New york city City, Salzberg experienced a wonderful offer of emotional discomfort during childhood years, which she commonly cites as the genesis of her eventual passion in meditation. Salzberg sped with senior high school in New York City, and discovered herself registering in university at the State College of New york city in Buffalo at age 16. After reading several of the Buddha's central trainings in an Oriental ideology program throughout her student year of university, Salzberg discovered herself thinking, 'Wow, I'm not alone. I do not have to feel weird. Everybody at some factor or one more reads through tough times.' Immediately, Salzberg determined to get an independent research task to find out meditation in India throughout her junior year. Her application was approved, and in January of 1971, Salzberg started her first experience with strenuous reflection instruction at Bodh Gaya. In the succeeding three years, Salzberg continued researching meditation under different Buddhist instructors, a lot of whom she frequently mentions in the meeting below. 'It never struck me momentarily that I would certainly be an educator,' Salzberg recounts with giggling. Yet in 1974, Salzberg returned to the USA to teach her initial reflection resort in Rock, Colorado. Within months, Salzberg co-founded the Understanding Reflection Society (IMS), a Vipassana hideaway facility, with fellow reflection educators Jack Kornfield and also Joseph Goldstein in Barre, Massachusetts.
In addition to co-running IMS and also leading reflection resorts around the globe, Salzberg is also a committed writer, and also has published nine books to this day. Writing is, probably, amongst Salzberg's essential routines, as all of her books combine the organic wisdom of self-inquiry with the rigor of scholarly examination. Right here, Salzberg shares emotional tales from her journey toward becoming a meditation teacher, all the while exploring what it implies to be a 'teacher' of a method that highlights the relevance of 'newbie's mind.'
You typically refer back to your very first journey to India: you were 18, as well as deeply curious about meditation. Just how did you first discover yourself drew in to reflection? Existed something particularly you were wanting to 'get' from it?
I found out about the possibility of doing reflection method to be happier. That's when I decided to produce an independent research study job, and asked to visit India to examine reflection. I got accepted and off I went for my junior year.
I still consider meditation similarly, except currently I suppose I'm much more innovative. Looking back at myself at the age of 18, the word I would certainly use to explain myself after that is 'fragmented.' Now I have the expertise and also the language to recognize that reflection alleviates that feeling of fragmentation and also helps make us really feel whole again. That's the way that it works to make us happier.
How did the idea of a profession in meditation develop for you? Was there a particular event or turning point when it came to be clear?
It never ever occurred to me momentarily that I 'd be a teacher. In 1974, I remained in India getting ready ahead back to the United States wherefore I made certain was mosting likely to simply be a really brief time period. I had to come back quickly getting a Visa, however made sure that I was going to go back to India and live there for the rest of my life. Prior to leaving, I visited one of my educators, this woman called Dipa Ma, which is a label that suggests 'Dipa's mom.' I traveled to Calcutta where she lived to say goodbye and also get her blessing for my trip. My pal Joseph Goldstein, whom I 'd fulfilled in my first resort in January 1971, had simply returned to the States when I went to see Dipa Ma, she told me that I would certainly be teaching with Joseph when I went back to the United States I was surprised as well as stated, 'No I will not.' But after that she claimed two things that were truly amazing to me. She told me, 'You truly comprehend suffering, and also that's why you ought to show.' I had actually never truly thought of the discomfort in my earlier life as being sort of useful the larger sense. The second thing she stated was, 'You could do anything you wish to. Believing you can not is the only trait that's going stop you.' I left her house still questioning just what she had said.
But when I came back to the States, I ended up going to Stone where Joseph was educating at Naropa. Jack Kornfield existed too, and I wound up remaining on and also instructing the 2nd session there with Joseph and a number of other individuals. Then we obtained an invite to educate a monthlong resort with each other, and afterwards an additional one to teach a 10-day hideaway in Vancouver. We were circumnavigating, resting on individuals's living space couches and also waiting on our following invitation. After that one day, we were in The golden state when someone asked us, 'Why don't you begin a retreat center in this nation? I know just thoes who can do it. They're done in Massachusetts.' To make sure that's what we did. It was really old-fashioned: My teacher told me to show, and also I really did not assume I could.
The idea of beginning or being 'a beginner' is central to the technique of meditation. Exactly what does it imply to you to be a 'instructor,' as well as a cited 'professional' of reflection? How do you maintain novice's mind in your very own practice?
I definitely don't consider myself as a professional, however it holds true that I have 45 years encounter, which is extremely different compared to having 15 minutes of encounter. And also the world of training is a new globe. Now, great deals of individuals hand me their cards that state 'reflection instructor.' Yet 10 years earlier, even 5 years ago, my next concern would certainly be 'That's your teacher?' because that would tell me something. If you reacted, 'Thich Nhat Hanh,' I would certainly think, 'Oh you most likely are taken part in social advocacy somehow.' If you claimed, the name of some scholarly Burmese monk, that may tell me another thing about your orientation. As well as now I understand that it's possibly not even an appropriate concern any longer for most individuals. They could not even consider having a teacher.
I would never make use of the word 'competence,' yet there is absolutely body of understanding that I see in my teachers. As well as currently, also when I'm fretting over my encounter, I recognize as well as recognize the wide array of experiences I have actually had, which become part of my mentor. That's why I always tell people that also if they're having a tough time in reflection, it's never a waste. Having a difficult time educates you regarding compassion and helps you comprehend others as well.
We have a lot conditioning around attempting too tough and also being tough on ourselves as well as people think, as an example, that if they get a stranglehold on the breath their minds won't stray and they'll 'be successful' at reflection. Part of the body of knowledge I'm describing is actually learning how to begin once more. That itself is a very efficient way of making 'progress' and permitting your reflection method to bring you advantages. Because if you're not focusing on the method of beginning once more, you're most likely concentrating on another thing, and that something is likely self-judgment.
For many people, reflection is a common aspect of the journey of psychological healing and self-discovery. Without specific comparisons to other techniques, what would certainly you claim are the special therapeutic advantages of meditation?
Just to be able to rest and also be with difficult sensations is tremendously healing. Particularly because we are possibly doing that rather of doing the compulsive thing we usually do when we really feel distress or sorrow or temper. Rather than acting out, we're discovering the skills of being with ourselves, and also understanding that absolutely nothing lasts. In discovering how to be kinder to yourself while in that state, we create space around hard sensations, which's an enormous thing.
Who have your essential teachers been, meditation or otherwise?
Dipa Ma for certain because she was a fantastic model to me of someone who could go through so much bad things as well as be so loving. She was so regular, in an extremely maternal method, constantly asking if individuals were comfy or needed more tea. She was likewise very, really solid, as well as was an incredible design to me. Naturally, Dipa Ma was likewise the individual that obtained me to show, so she actually helped me forge the entire rest of my life.
What are one of the most salient kernels of advice you've ever before gotten?
I was functioning with a Tibetan teacher Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche who was likewise extremely, really crucial to me. I was extremely dismayed at the time about exactly what I assumed somebody else was assuming, as well as he stated to me, 'You understand the ideas emerging in his mind are as vacant as the ideas developing in yours,' suggesting that ideas come as well as go and typically aren't solid, as well as don't have an inherent reality.
Love Your Enemies, the book you just recently co-wrote with Robert Thurman, worries the prickly subject of temper. What recommendations could you give regarding just how reflection can instruct us to associate with anger and other challenging emotions?
The first trait is attempting to see just what we could be including on, such as ideas like 'I'm such a mad person and I always will be,' or 'I shouldn't really feel mad any longer,' or obtaining totally shed in it and snapping. The next thing is being able to into the heart of the temper, due to the fact that when you in fact look at rage, it's an intricate feeling. There are moments of sadness, minutes of anxiety, minutes of helplessness. You see it's kind of this permeable mosaic of various things. Sure, rage frequently feels solid and also relentless when it initially turns up, however when we actually consider it, it's an active system with a great deal of adjustment associated with it. That gives us a various point of view if when we decide to do something about it: We could act from a location of comprehending all those feelings.
What does your meditation technique presently look like?
My official sitting technique is a daily awareness method. I essentially begin by settling my interest on my breath, which is the technique I obtained started with 45 years back! And various other times, it's even more open awareness-just sitting and observing whatever comes up. I do enjoy loving-kingness method, which is its very own technique, calmly saying phrases like 'May you be satisfied, relaxed, cope with convenience.' I do a lot of it walking the streets of New York, or in a taxi or on an aircraft, taking a walk in Massachusetts, or just waiting - on line at Whole Foods or in a physician's waiting room. If there's a hold-up while I'm at the airport, for instance, instead of flipping out or obtaining upset and even reading, I'll simply aim to expand loving-kindness, so it's type of an enjoyable means to be at the airport.
Has your technique changed considerably over the years?
To some degree, I've discovered brand-new methods, new methods, as well as new refinements of those approaches. One of the points that intrigues me concerning the entire path is that it exposes a lot more regarding our conditioning. We're inclined to think, 'I did the 101-course currently, now all I need is the truly secret wonderful guideline or the graduate meditation course.' And also I assume it's the very same direction, simply you're so different. I was speaking to some individuals the other night concerning maybe educating a sophisticated meditation class. Which obtained me thinking, 'Well what does innovative instruction also mean? Just what would be the distinction?' Probably the concerns would be various since individuals may have a lot more confidence in some areas. They could be questioning traits like, 'Exactly how I do I manage sleepiness in longer sittings?' But maybe not, or even if they were, the guideline would not be different.
You travel the world to educate reflection. You write publications as well as routine posts. You run a meditation retreat center in Massachusetts. Just how do you stay 'focused'?
I constantly are reluctant with a word like 'stay,' it's even more like 'return.' I do definitely seem like I have to exercise on a daily basis. It can't end up being academic. I simply met somebody who was undergoing a difficult time. His feedback was to sit for 4 hrs a day in total. He 'd begin in the early morning by resting for HALF AN HOUR and afterwards would just add 15 mins here and there throughout totally free windows throughout the day till he collected four hours. He did it for six months, and didn't make it some sort of guarantee to himself forever. It's unbelievable as well as influenced me to attempt the same thing, but for just 2 hours. I don't count or arrange however just a few days ago, I discovered that I had 15 mins to spare, as well as located myself assuming 'OK, just what need to I obtain done?!' But then I assumed, just rest. Along with the formal sitting I do in the morning, I'll do this throughout the day when I have five minutes here and also there. And also I'm not obtaining much less done, interestingly enough.
There's a social misconception that reflection is a near-automatic way to 'remove your mind.' For lots of people initial showing up to meditation, this usual perception can cause wonderful dissatisfaction, as the practice is usually tough. What do you tell students who are shocked by just how 'tough' meditation is?
I believe it's crucial from the start to attempt and also dispel some of those misconceptions, because many people have concepts regarding what reflection need to be like: 'I must have the ability to quit my thinking,' 'I should block all my thoughts, 'I must be able to empty my mind,' 'I ought to have just stunning thoughts.' Every one of those thoughts are incorrect, as well as lead us to a great deal of trouble. We generally condemn ourselves or give up because of this. So I believe that's a vital understanding-realizing that we're not attempting to eliminate thoughts, we're simply altering our connection to those thoughts. Judgment is not mosting likely to aid you boost. Ironically just what aids you improve is a self- concern. You're sitting, and perhaps your mind wanders for the billionth time. But going into a 45 min tirade against yourself is exhausting and also is mosting likely to take up a great deal of time as well as power. We're always attempting to start again. Laying this context is truly crucial. Otherwise, at any time somebody's mind wandered, they would certainly think it was the end of their reflection career!
You educate loving-kindness reflection. How would you explain the relationship in between concern and also mindfulness in your method of meditation?
Let's claim you're sitting and after that your attempting to feel your breath, after that your mind wanders and after that you need to release and also return. We would certainly state that because letting go and also coming back there inevitably is some kind of self-compassion or else you can't do it. Even if you do not understand it because method, with those words, that's what it is. It's much less complicated for many people to start evaluating themselves and also seeming like a failure than it is to let go as well as start again, as well as bring focus back today. In a sneaky sort of method, that mindfulness method, which is one of the most foundational technique, is truly concerning planting greater self -compassion. Which results in greater empathy for others.
The key advantage of mindfulness classically is insight, it's understanding. Today, it's mostly discussed these days is one more fantastic benefit but it's more regarding populating your life, really tasting the tea when you consume it, instead compared to understanding. Take just what I stated concerning rage, for instance: if you can prevent obtaining lost in the 'include ons,' you could actually see the rage, as well as that it's constantly altering. That's incredible insight. After that insight will result in greater compassion because one of the things we see, along with impermanence, is inter-connectedness. We see that our lives have something to do with each other. When you see that, concern will certainly arise.
If somebody just has five minutes a day to commit to a method, exactly what would recommend?
Start with supporting focus on the breath, sitting easily in a means where you feel at convenience. You could close your eyes or otherwise. In this system, simply take a breath a regular, natural breath. You are not attempting to make it deep or different-just rest your focus on the breath. When your mind has wandered-because it will-see if you could delicately release and also bring your attention back to the breath. That's your five minutes, and afterwards the method ends up being nearly a type of muscular tissue memory of allowing go and also starting once more. You're developing sufficient stamina so that you could after that practice mindfulness in a much wider sense.

hello!! im a demigod (son of apollo) and i came by here a while ago, i believe, asking about a quest i did for my aunt artemis... can i ask what sort of things happened on that quest? what sort of people were with me, did i get along with them?
Storytime! I love these spreads!
You: nine of wands. Determination, accepting of risks. Your companion(s): reversed eight of cups. Dissatisfaction, instability, indecision. So basically, you were super ready to get going on this adventure while your companion was not. They went because you talked them into it, but not without complaining. But you were extremely gung ho.
The journey: nine of cups -> Death -> reversed six of cups -> High Priestess -> reversed four of wands -> four of cups.
Beginning: Started out ideal. This journey was looking super good at first.
Rising action: There was a moment where everything had to start over. The death card does not necessarily mean anyone actually died, this is a card about new beginnings. However, right in the middle of a quest that’s not a great thing. You had to start over from scratch.
Conflict: Solitude, doubts. Okay your companion might have bailed. (Fingers crossed that they didn’t die on that last card. They may have just changed their mind and headed home.) Either way, you had to finish this quest alone.
Climax: Knowledge. Since we believe from the previous reading that the quest was for some sort of information, I think this is the moment where you find it. It’s also interesting to see a major arcana card come in to represent this, since there are plenty of minor cards that also represent knowledge. But this particular bit of information came from a major source, maybe another deity? I’d say you found someone with the information you were seeking, and the information could only come from them. If not a deity, then perhaps an oracle or prophet type of figure.
Falling action: Okay so upright the four of wands means completion, but reversed it means mistaken evaluations. There was something wrong with the information, your quest isn’t quite done. You found your information, but it isn’t really in the correct form yet. My best guess is something like a mistranslation, and you need to go back and re-translate the information as your source gave it to you so that what you bring to Artemis is actually right.
Resolution: Harmony. Things turn out okay. Not to mention, the person depicted in this card is the same “character” as the one used on the eight of cups. I would like to think you reunite here with the companion that bailed on you. (Told you they weren’t dead.) The symbol of the moon is also hiding in the corner of the card. Things worked out in Artemis’s favor too.

Nine Doctors Couldn’t Help Me
It’s Monday, everyone! And that means another Primal Blueprint Real Life Story from a Mark’s Daily Apple reader. If you have your own success story and would like to share it with me and the Mark’s Daily Apple community please contact me here. I’ll continue to publish these each Monday as long as they keep coming in. Thank you for reading!
My primal journey started in 2010. I had just attended my last Weight Watchers meeting ever. I had been doing Weight Watchers since 2005, and was at my highest weight ever. I was massively obese, I was severely lethargic, and I lived with daily brain fog. I was having miscarriages, but was being told there was nothing wrong with me. I went to a new doctor who told me that when I got pregnant again, I should come in and immediately start running tests so that when I lost it, we might have some insight as to why.
That was at the end of April. I was depressed and desperate. My dad had stumbled onto Mark Sisson’s website and pushed me to try Primal eating. I was extremely skeptical. In 2001, when I had first started dealing with health issues, I had been diagnosed with peripheral insulin resistance and had tried the Atkins diet. I was living in a dorm room at the time and failed miserably. So I was skeptical about trying another low carb restrictive diet.
But what did I have to lose?
Within a month of going Primal, I had lost several pounds, my brain fog was slowly clearing, and my gut was healing (another problem I hadn’t realized existed!).
And in July, I got pregnant again. This time it stuck. My son was born 9 months later. After 3 miscarriages, I am firmly convinced that I stayed pregnant because of my diet changes, and I became a full Primal convert.
After my son was born, I immediately resumed my Primal lifestyle. His first real food was bacon, and he loved liver as soon as he was old enough for real food. I continued the Primal journey, and continued slowly losing the weight and regaining my health.
Then I got pregnant again. This pregnancy was a whole different situation. I had hyperemesis gravidarum for both pregnancies, but this time I couldn’t eat anything. I lived off of cinnamon rolls, as they were the only thing I seemed able to keep down, and I drank nothing but gatorade. I was miserable, I was unbelievably adverse to the smell of all meat so I couldn’t even try to be Primal. I developed eczema on my arm so badly that I had to wear sleeves to work so my clients wouldn’t think I’d contracted ringworm! Luckily, my daughter was born healthy. I ended that pregnancy 10 lbs above where I started. And then my health disappeared.
The rash on my arm never really went away. I soon had eczema on my legs as well. Furthermore, I was so constipated that I wouldn’t go to the bathroom for days at a time and had constant crippling, severe stomach cramps. I had horrible brain fog, and who knows how much of that was a daughter who wouldn’t sleep versus dietary issues.
But more importantly, when she was not quite a year old, I broke out with hives. At first we didn’t know what they were and thought they were bed bug bites! Finally we clued in and I went to the allergy doctor. I knew I was reactive to wheat. As soon as I had cut it out in 2010, I noticed I got sick every time I ate it. I was suspicious of eggs and dairy. But I tested positive to literally every single food, plant, and animal they tested me for with the exception of white fish!
He immediately confirmed that it was an allergy problem. But that night I ended up in the emergency room with full body, raised, angry red, large diameter hives (like inches in diameter). He put me on all sorts of steroids, antihistamines, and beta-blockers. I cut everything out of my diet, and literally ate nothing but unflavored ground beef and vegetables for months.
And the huge, angry, red, full-body hives never went away.
I went from the allergist through eight other doctors. I went to conventional doctors, homeopathic doctors, acupuncturists, herbalists, etc. The hives never went away. I finally took myself off of all meds because they were turning me into a zombie. Unfortunately, even off of meds, nothing improved. One doctor started me on progesterone, thinking it was a hormonal problem because my cycles were so irregular (they had been like clockwork up until my daughter), and that made me much sicker. Unfortunately, those side effects didn’t go away once I took myself back off the meds.
Finally, out of sheer desperation, I gave up. I stopped going to doctors. I cleaned my diet up to be 100% Primal. I started meditating daily. I changed my job to reduce the stress.
And between less stress and diet improvements, finally, the hives started to go away. It had been a year and a half. They weren’t gone completely until after the two year mark, and even as recently as a few months ago they’d still pop up if I became too stressed or ate the wrong things.
Since then, my health has been a slow improvement. The eczema slowly disappeared. My gut slowly healed. But my weight wouldn’t drop. All the signs that showed up when I was put on hormones (heavier periods, breasts that were so sore you couldn’t look at them for a full 2 weeks each cycle, twenty day cycles) were still present. And I was plateaued. I would drop to 188 lb (I’m 5’3), but could never get below that number.
I was stuck there for nearly 3 years. I was feeling better overall, but I was stuck. I would be extremely clean for about 2 months, then I would give up since my weight wasn’t shifting anyway. Then a week later I’d be back to Primal eating because the brain fog and low energy would have come back.
Finally, this last spring, I broke that plateau. I had been 100% Primal for a few months, finally, and everything suddenly balanced. My cycles regulated, I stopped being in pain, and my weight finally started to drop again.
It’s still a journey. I’m not quite to my ideal weight yet as I’ve hit several other plateaus since. But for someone who has been obese since they were 16, now that I finally know what works for me, I can be patient. And more importantly, being Primal allowed me to heal up such severe disease after nine doctors couldn’t help me that I became an even stronger advocate than I’d been before.
I was already a licensed veterinarian and was using Primal principles in my animal patients, but after finally healing my own body, I became a certified Primal Health Coach so I could help the humans as well!
So what have I done since I received my certification? Since I received my certification, my life has gone in all sort of directions!
I was already using Primal principles in my holistic veterinary practice. I have absolutely continued using those principles to help heal the pups who walk through my door, and I have created an educational website and Facebook group for owners interested in healing their pets through diet!
However, I still wanted to help people, too.
When I first graduated, I obtained two informal coaching clients. One was a friend of my mother’s who had suffered from IBD, allergies, inability to lose weight, and masses around her thyroid (although they said her thyroid values were normal).
When we first started talking, she was eating grains with most meals, avoiding fat, and filling her diet with things like vegetable oil!
The first thing we did was cut the grains and vegetable oil, reintroduce real foods, and increase the healthy fats.
Within a month, she had lost 20 pounds, her energy was returning, and her IBD was feeling more controlled than ever!
My other client was a friend of mine who had also suffered from IBD, but who also had her gallbladder removed a few years before. In addition, she couldn’t lose weight and had all sorts of fluctuations in her hormones.
Again, with nothing more than diet changes, she slowly started to recover. Her weight decreased more slowly, but it was the first time she had ever succeeded in getting it off! More importantly, the IBD that flared with every menstrual cycle started staying controlled, and her hormones started to balance.
However, that wasn’t the end of coaching for me.
Around this time, I started having other veterinarians approaching me, asking how I had changed my life around. I had gone from severely burned out and feeling trapped and desperate in my job to outsourcing myself from my own business, moving to another state, and learning to love life and travel again!
And they wanted to know how I had done it.
Well, the first answer to that question was that when I started to get my stress under control (which started with getting my diet and health under control), then changes just started to take place that allowed me to completely turn my lifestyle around.
So I also began coaching veterinarians and other health care professionals on how to change their lives around. That coaching isn’t just about health, but health is almost always a piece of what we have to cover since these are women under massive loads of stress, and we have to deal with the health effects of that stress.
Today, I do both health coaching and mindset coaching. I believe in helping people live their best lives, and I will use whatever means necessary to help them do that! So while much of my focus is on veterinarians and other health care professionals, I still do regular health coaching as well.
I teach people that it is definitely possible to live the life of your dreams, and in my case, it all started with learning about ancestral health!

So our experts must see to it that the title is actually certainly not difficukt to articulate as well as a title that is difficult to pronounce is consistently evident incorrect the outcome generally being actually an incorrect meaning. Meanwhile, as was suggested above, components from white collar job strategies are actually typically found within heaven dog collar work type but they are actually restricted to the managerial, written and administrative responsibilities which sell management, association, document always keeping and also direction specifically within office complex hence the wearing on of neck-ties. The water-adapted spider was actually uncovered virtually nine years ago-- in January 2009-- on Australia's coast, yet that failed to formally receive its name up until aquatic biologists posted their investigation on December 22. But if you see that the visa reveals a fully other name or even passport number, you definitely could not journey with such a visa.
