✍ (for august!)
✍: For what my muse has written about yours in their diary. @fckaugust
DISCLAIMER: cyrelle does not journal. i had debated on adapting this to something more realistic for her, like a scene from one of her therapy sessions in 2020 ( inspired by the ‘fuck everyone who isn’t a sea slob’ episode of ‘euphoria’ ). but then i realized that cyrelle probably never got in too deep with her therapist before she stopped going. so, that scene would’ve just been cyrelle saying something like “oh i guess august was one of my friends from darkwood” and not really expanding much on that singular fact because she MUST be Unknowable even to the people she pays to know her. it wouldn’t have been very interesting for anyone to read or for me to write. but let it be known that the idea came to me & i still ended up settling for what cyrelle probably would have written about august in her diary, if she was the type of person to document her uncensored thoughts. which she is not, but for the sake of this prompt she is and she has a green leuchtturm1917 notebook. also idk if i need to clarify this, but these are just excerpts from what i imagine are longer diary entries — i’m only writing out the parts where she directly references august ( since that’s the prompt ) b/c i cannot be bothered to write out every single thought cyrelle had outside of him. but i just wanted to point that out so that no one’s reading this & left thinking “is august ALL she would write about?” no, probably not, i’m just really lazy!
NOVEMBER 17, 2010
MX brought the new American boy over today. The one who “replaced” Eddie. It’s so fucked up, that the Michaels just went all the way to the States and got another kid to take his place in their home. I wanted to ask if he knew about the son they kicked out before him, but I didn’t. What if he didn’t know? Then I’d have to be the one to tell him about Eddie, and that’s not really my story to tell. Plus I didn’t want him to start getting worried about possibly getting tossed to the curb, too, on the off chance that he gets accused of a horrible crime that no one can actually prove he committed. Besides, he’ll get more than his fill of Darkwood gossip soon enough. He’s already at the center of some of it — Sharleen McKinnon said he had a “record” in the States. Don’t know what the fuck that means or how she knows all that. She didn’t have much else to say after I tossed her in the dumpster.
NOVEMBER 20, 2010
Apparently August is from West Virginia, yet he somehow hasn’t seen “October Sky.” Tragic.
NOVEMBER 22, 2010
Made August watch “October Sky” with me, & realized too late that I had talked all the way through it. I don’t know if he remembered a single character’s name by the end because I kept going on about the stupid Space Race. He didn’t seem too annoyed by me, though, & I loaned him my copy of the DVD to make up for it. So I think we’re fine.
DECEMBER 3, 2010
There aren’t many things as funny as the look on August’s face after he realized that ordering “bacon” at Roy’s means getting the kind that’s not streaky. Welcome to England, friend.
MARCH 11, 2012
God, I really just told Sierra that one of my professors is “plumb crazy.” Fucking August.
SEPTEMBER 9, 2014
Holy fuck, August was there, too. Fuck fuck fuck FUCK.
JULY 8, 2016
Fuck, I actually did text August last night. I’m such a fucking mess. How do I not remember that? Is it worse if I just don’t explain myself? I doubt he’d want to hear from me again.
OCTOBER 29, 2019
How the fuck do I forget my own birthday, yet August still remembers it? I know I didn’t wish him a happy birthday when his came around. I’m such a loser.
JANUARY 30, 2020
I can’t fucking stand that mural. I hate that I have to see their faces every time I come back into town. It’s marvelous and he’s so talented and I hate it. How is it that he goes through something that horrific and creates something so beautiful from it? I used to always think we were more alike than different, but I can’t create shit. I go through shitty situations and come out of them an even shittier person who contributes absolutely nothing to society. It’s better that we don’t really talk anymore because then I don’t think I can pretend to love this thing he created. He deserves all the praise in the world and I can’t even fucking give him the bare minimum compliment. Nina and George would be so proud of it, Rachel would love to be able to see it. And I can’t stand to even look at it. I fucking suck.
FEBRUARY 21, 2014 ( ROMAN RELOADED — THE RE-UP )
It’s funny, I missed him more than I realized I did. And he never actually left. That’s kind of a tragedy in and of itself — losing someone you could’ve had all along, if things had just been a little different.
#alrightnik#i am so sorry but i am. not sober#so this isn't very good#c: august#also remember that text meme from eons ago? i referenced some of those hehe

Fic: The Secret Journal of 'Stanford' Pines
Size: ~3000 words AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/20864183
Stan Pines keeps a journal of brief daily notes during the summer of 2012.
Note: We all know that the Gravity Falls timeline makes no sense whatsoever. Therefore this is based on a headcanon timeline I made a year or so ago, trying to incorporate as many of the canon dates (in show and published J3) as possible, but ignoring the ones that were contradictory or made no sense. This still means some episodes did not happen in a strictly chronological order.
June 1
Kids are here. I have no idea what to do. Why did I agree to this.
Boy is a grump and girl made macaroni art in the kitchen. Did I even have macaroni?
June 2 Sunday
I think boy got spooked in the forest. He seems fine, though. Good taste in gold chains.
Girl is now dating some punk kid.
June 3
Kids looked like they’d been run over by the golf cart when they got back tonight. Not good.
Gave them some free gifts from the shop to cheer em up. Yes I know
Boy got a new hat. Should get him to wear a Mystery Shack shirt next. Girl found a grappling hook that was not in my inventory. Bold choice.
What would they say if they knew about me?
June 4
Fishing Season Opening Day – took the kids fishing.
Of course, they got excited about monster hunting instead. They’re listening to reason about as well as I and Fo did as a kid.
But. They came back to me in the end. We had fun.
I love those kids.
June 5
Soos found those cursed old wax statues I sealed up some ten years ago. Don’t seem all that cursed now. One had melted.
Mabel’s gonna make a new one for the wax museum. Meaning I’ll have to figure out how to make suckers pay to look at wax statues again.
June 6
Mabel’s wax creation nearly gave me a heart attack. It looks just like my twin me.
She’s crazy talented.
June 7
I’d say the wax museum reopening went well. Assuming “well” means “profit”.
Did anyone actually think I’d hand out free pizza?
June 8
Hanging out with my wax twin Stan, and the moment I turned my back he was murdered.
June 9 Sunday
Tried to hold a funeral for Wax Stan. Failed to keep it tounge-in-cheek.
Face it, Ford is long gone
June 10
Guess the wax people were still as cursed as I remembered. Kids killed them with fire – I should have done that long ago.
Dipper crawled in the vents all day looking for a wax head that got away.
If I keep telling him he’s delusional, he’s got to stop looking for trouble eventually, right?
June 11
Mabel decided I should date Lazy Susan. Couldn’t stop her. Now Susan and her cats keep calling me.
This was a bad idea. (I will never tell Mabel that.)
June 12
Went on a date with Lazy Susan to shut her up. That ended just as well as expected.
Need to figure out some more specific excuses.
June 13
The worst thing is, the Portal should work now. It’s functional. I just can’t get it to start.
Maybe I’ve been doing it wrong all along
I did fix that old copier. Don’t know if it still makes copies of people, but at least it makes copies of paper again.
Caught Dipper making oogly eyes at Wendy. I smell drama.
June 14
Did not expect “The Duchess Approves” to be that good.
June 15
The traditional Mystery Shack party that has nothing to do with any birthdays.
Mabel is a great singer, and that Northwest brat cheated.
Happy birthday, Sixer.
June 16 Sunday
Gideon Gleeful’s running TV ads again.
Of course my family goes to his show just to spite me.
June 17
Mabel played with Gideon today. Did not see that one coming.
As long as she’s happy, I guess.
June 18
I hate Pioneer Day.
Stupid people acting even stupider than normal, nothing works, then someone (me) ends up in the stocks.
June 19
Gideon and Mabel are dating!?
Seemed like a horrible idea, but Bud Gleeful has a point on the moneymaking opportunities if we play it right.
June 20
So if Mabel marries Gideon, his business will be incorporated into mine. I sure like the sound of that.
Bud is already making t-shirts.
June 21
June 22
OK, no. No deals with the Gleefuls. Not now or ever.
Mabel broke up with the little pest. Good riddance.
Got me a nice painting from Bud’s house, though.
June 23 Sunday
The Mystery Fair! It may look cheap, but it brings in the money.
Though someone broke all safety protocols and brought a futuristic laser gun to Dunkle the Grunkle. That’s unfair.
Mabel has a pig now.
June 24
Got roped into the gaming arcade with the kids.
Maybe get one of those games for the Shack?
June 25
Mabel decided to fix my fear of heights.
I can say this – being on top of a water tower about to fall over was unpleasant. Compared to that, a high but stable ground isn’t so bad.
Dipper got into a fistfight with Wendy’s boyfriend over teenage drama, but good on him for standing up for himself.
June 26
For some reason Gideon has gotten it into himself that he wants the Mystery Shack now.
Good luck, kid. I’m a better conman than you’ll ever be.
June 27
Mabel is slightly taller than Dipper. This is funny.
Gideon Gleeful trying to be threatening while throwing a hysterical fit after breaking my new mirror maze – mostly confusing. Wish I knew what went on in that kid’s head.
June 28
Kids made me wear the golden teeth. Guess they think I’m a dishonest man.
Fortunately, I’m good at bullshitting even when telling the truth. Think I scandalized the poor things. Hilarious.
Could have been disaster, though. Could have easily made them hate me.
June 29
Spent half the day falling down the Bottomless Pit.
June 30 Sunday
Summerween, now that’s a respectable local holiday.
Scaring children for fun and profit. Celebrating true evil together with family.
July 1
Hottest day of the year. Wax Stan was permanently murdered by the weather.
Closed the Shack and went to the municipal pool with the kids.
Gideon stole my perfect pool chair. It’s on.
July 2
Broke into the pool area at night to get the chair to myself. Which was a good plan, until I wanted to get up later in the day. The pest had coated it with glue.
The kids broke into the pool at night, too. Didn’t ask.
July 3
Opened the Shack again.
Can’t be too lazy. Tourists to fleece and all that.
July 4
July 5
Mabel bet she could run the Shack better than I can. Well. I’m nothing if not a gambler.
So, three days of vacation, in which I will make more money than she will make running the Shack. Winner takes the Shack, loser sings a silly song.
Best case scenario, she learns something about business and stops complaining. Worst case, she actually makes money and then runs the Shack for me the rest of the summer. Not bad.
July 6
Made it past the line to be a contestant on Cash Wheel, using my Old Man powers and lack of common decency.
Why is it so hard to sleep
July 7 Sunday
Well. I lost at Cash Wheel.
Guess that means I lost the bet with Mabel, too. Unless I go rob a bank or something in the time I have left. Hm.
July 8
Turns out Mabel barely broke even when running the Shack. She did win the bet, but she didn’t want my job, no surprise there.
I’m proud of her for learning something.
She still made me sing that song. On video tape. It’s kinda catchy.
July 9
Mabel’s friends came for a sleepover. They make a lot of noice.
July 10
Soos managed to uncover the door to Ford’s that old study I sealed thirty years ago the very moment the kids demanded separate bedrooms.
I never wanted to see that room again. His glasses were still there
Guess they didn’t want the room in the end, but now it’s open. Can’t re-seal it.
I think they messed around with the freaky carpet. Took it away at the end of the day just in case.
July 11
I fucked up, but I fixed it.
I got Mabel’s pig back, even when I had to punch a pterodactyl in the face for it.
She doesn’t hate me.
I love that kid so much.
July 12
That weird egg I pocketed from the dino-cave hatched. Dipper says it’s a compo-whatnot.
I call him Compy. He’s now my Mystery Pet.
July 13
Soos’ birthday. The kids tried to throw a party, which is. Bad idea.
Think he appreciated laser tag, though. And the magic pizza they got him. Never seen him so happy on a birthday.
July 14 Sunday
Turns out Compy is a very tiny dragon. Hoards stuff, mostly cash. In places I can’t reach.
It’s no good. Gonna hand the chicken-lizard over to farmer Sprott first thing in the morning before he bankrupts me.
July 15
Mabel and her friends went to some boy band concert. Got back late with a large pack of spoils. Probably robbed someone.
Wendy’s boyfriend is charming her with homemade music. Dipper suspects magic. Can’t rule that out.
July 16
There was a hypnotic message in the music, but telling Wendy about it only made the teenage drama worse.
Went bowling with Dipper afterwards to cheer him up. Should have a chat with Wendy, too.
July 17
Gideon I’m How could
Didn’t know Gideon was that serious.
As if half-lucid dreams about that yellow triangle wasn’t bad enough. (The kids know something. Not asking. I want them to stay away from that stuff.)
We’re staying with Soos as I panic figure out how to fix this.
July 18
I can’t fix this.
Gideon’s got the whole town eating out of his hand and I’m just a grouchy old man.
Doing the responsible thing. Got bus tickets to send the kids home tomorrow.
Whatever I do next, don’t want them to watch.
July 19
GIDEON IS A LITTLE SHIT AND I AM AWESOME.
Figured out his trick, proved it in public and now he’s in jail.
Got the Shack back. Got the kids back.
And. Get this. Gideon had one of Ford’s missing journals. I have it now.
July 20
I can’t believe it. Dipper. Had the third journal all summer.
All three of the dumb books are right here in front of me.
I activated the Portal. Simple as anything.
It’s scanning for Ford right now.
I’m actually bringing him back.
July 21 Sunday
Grand reopening of the Mystery Shack turned into a zombie-fest.
Kids could’ve died because I was too busy with the Portal to pay attention. That won’t happen again.
Should have talked to them about weirdness sooner. Hope they believed me when I said I have no more secrets.
A little worried that government might have picked up signals from the Portal.
July 22
Repairing the Shack. Too much undead slime to attract tourists like this.
July 23
Re-reopened the Shack.
Dipper got himself an old laptop computer from somewhere. Probably stolen. He tried to hide it.
July 24
Went minigolfing with the kids.
Mabel challenged Pacifica Northwest to a duel at midnight. I’m so proud of her.
Letting kids into minigolf courts at night to take a rich snob down a few pegs – finally putting my skills to good use.
July 25
I still can’t believe the Portal works.
It keeps scanning.
July 26
Tried to bring old Goldie back to the gift shop but apparently he’s unhip and scary. Had to throw him away before the parents sued me.
What I do need is a singing animatronic robot badger. That’s what kids like these days.
July 27
Soos missed work for the first time ever. Seems to be girl trouble, but the kids are handling it.
Would’ve stolen myself a robot badger if it hadn’t tried to kill me. Saved by old Goldie. No way I’m not keeping him now.
July 28 Sunday
Went for a Vegas vacation because I deserve it.
Not because I’m nervous.
Brought Goldie, might have gotten slightly drunk. And slightly married.
July 29
Mabel found herself a new obsession with hand puppets.
She’ll throw a big show on Friday. Made me rent Gravity Falls theatre for her. (Can’t believe I did that.)
July 30
The Shack is full of sock puppets and kids and Mabel keeps singing.
Guess this is my life now.
July 31
August 1
Soos went to his cousin’s wedding with his new girlfriend. Good on him.
Mabel’s still obsessing about puppets.
Dipper looks like he hasn’t slept in days. Can’t blame him with all this ruckus.
August 2
Play was good! Think it paid for the costs, too. Mabel’s got showmanship.
Don’t get the ending, though.
I mean. Children fighting always makes for good footage, but was it necessary to beat Dipper up that bad? I swear Mabel don’t know how strong she is.
A little worried about Dipper. He seemed high as a kite all day. Probably sleep deprivation. At least he’s sleeping now.
August 3
August 4 Sunday
Gravity’s going more crazy around the Portal the longer it’s on, but I don’t care.
It hasn’t found Ford yet.
It won’t find him if he’s dead
August 5
The Portal ate my notebook.
Got a nasty cut on the back of my hand from some debris, too. Could have been worse.
August 6
Tried to advertise the Mystery Shack for the kids at the Woodstick Festival. Hilarious disaster.
Being feared is worth more than being loved anyway.
August 7
August 8
IT FOUND HIM.
He’s alive. There’s a lock on his position.
Fuck I don’t I have to
I know how it works. It needs to calibrate for a while. It needs to be fueled for the big moment.
I’ll go rob a government facility right now.
(So glad the kids are off at the Northwest party tonight.)
27 hours and then I’ll see him again.
August 9
Ford is back.
I had to run from the feds and the kids found out everything the wrong way but it worked and he’s back.
But he doesn’t He still hates me.
Why would I expect anything else.
Don’t know what I’d do with myself if the kids weren’t here.
It’s fine. I fucked up everything, but. Mabel trusts me. Dipper forgives me. I’m fine.
not crying
August 10 Sunday
The Shack needs repairs again.
Spent most of the day making Duck-tective finale preparations with Mabel. We had fun.
Told the kids to stay away from Ford.
August 11
Dipper has predictably decided to be nerd friends with my brother.
Can’t stop him. He looks happy. Both of them do.
Still can’t figure out why Ford would have reality altering dice lying around in his sci-fi pouch.
Anyway. I knew Duck-tective had an evil twin.
August 12
I hate everything.
Ford will take my his place here soon enough, does he have to undercut me while I’m still here?
I’m running for mayor now.
August 13
Kids are helping me with a political campaign. Apparently I know nothing about politics and have unpalatable opinions. Bah.
August 14
The Stump Speech went great! I relax, words happen, people cheer.
Dipper got a lucky tie for me. Think it really works.
August 15
Should’ve tried being a politician before. Almost feels like people like me.
August 16
Nope. Politics is not for me. Too much mind control.
Should’ve known it wasn’t me making those speeches.
(The kids shouldn’t get into politics either. Can’t always be there to save them from murder.)
Turns out I’m not mayor material, but I’m a HERO.
Take that, Ford.
August 17
Rented an RV and took Soos and the kids and Mabel’s friends on a road trip.
Pranking the tourist traps. Good old Mystery Shack tradition for the last time.
Dipper’s practising flirting like a pro.
August 18 Sunday
Almost got eaten by a spider-woman. That could have gone better.
Have to admit, the kids are heroes too.
Don’t think Ford noticed we were gone.
August 19
Opened the Mystery Shack for the final stretch.
Two more weeks, then I’m gone for good.
August 20
Made a good deal on illegal pugs. Still got it.
Ford and Dipper put some magic mojo on the Shack. Not gonna ask.
Might have something to do with how badly Ford is sleeping.
August 21
Ten days left until the kids’s birthday and the end of summer.
Guess I’m doing a countdown now.
August 22
Nine days left.
August 23
Eight days left.
I’m gonna order a ponytail kit.
August 24
HELL NO I DON’T NEED THIS.
It’s the literal end of the world and the kids are missing.
Suddenly orange skies, goats turning into monsters, the whole shebang. I thought I had enough troubles.
That magic on the Shack seems to be protecting it, but. THE KIDS ARE MISSING. So is Ford.
??? 1
Day and night are replaced by eternal glowing orange and every single clock is busted, so no more dates.
Went out looking for the kids, but all I find is other people. Also demons. No sign of Soos or Wendy, either.
Been taking people to the Shack. Safest place on Earth for all I know. I have enough brown meat and elected myself Chief.
The kids are fine. Probably with Ford. That’s the ticket.
??? 2
Went out looking again. Found the Northwest girl dressed in nothing but a potato sack. She was crying and I don’t want to know, but she didn’t deserve it.
Been told the head honcho is the yellow triangle. He calls this Weirdmageddon.
Old McGucket showed up more coherent than usual, herding a whole flock of forest creatures into the Shack. Starting to get crowded here.
The kids are fine. Of course they are.
??? 3
There’s still people alive out there. I heard cars over at Gleeful’s place.
Didn’t see anyone else.
I’ve lost I couldn’t even
Mabel and Dipper are definitely still alive. So is Soos and Wendy. And Ford better be.
??? 4
They’re alive!
All four of my kids, bursting through the door like cops doing a raid but they’re alive!
Now all I want is for them to stay here and be safe. Why can’t they see that?
I’m done saving my brother’s skin and getting nothing but scorn for it.
Ford made his own bed with that demon. Forget it.
??? 5
Did I mention, the plan concocted by five kids, Soos, and a known madman is utterly insane?
They’re rebuilding the Shack. I just had it repaired, too.
It’s my house, but no one’s listening to me.
??? 6
I keep having this bad feeling about Ford.
It’s dumb. My brother has made it perfectly clear how he feels about being saved.
??? 7
Well then.
Not letting the kids lead an apocalypse rebellion against a demonic triangle without me.
August 25 Sunday
August 26
August 27
August 28
Huh. I can’t remember writing this, but it does ring a few bells.
It’s like I
I need to talk to Ford.
August 29
So. The apocalypse is over, and we’re all fine.
We killed the demon by burning my mind out when he was inside, pretty much.
My mind’s still there, but it’s kinda. Well. In need of repair.
Spent a few days reliving good memories.
Turns out there’s more than a few bad ones, too. But.
Everyone is so good to me
I don’t deserve this
August 30
I remember how Ford looked at me after I brought him back.
Now he acts like he likes to he thinks I’m
Now it’s like he’s my brother again.
He said. “Thank you.”
August 31
The kids have left. I’ll miss them, but I’ll see them again.
Until then, my brother and I are going sailing.

Within a few weeks of the novel coronavirus spreading from China to the rest of the world, a pernicious narrative began to take root online: the suggestion that the virus SARS-CoV-2 was a biological weapon created in a lab.1
In mid-January 2020, Dr. Li-Meng Yan, a researcher at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), gave credence to this idea when she told her favorite YouTuber — Wang Dinggang, a vocal critic of the Chinese government, and close associate of exiled Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui2 — about rumors she had heard about the virus’ origins. Wang repeated the conversations on his channel without naming her “because officials could make the person disappear. ”3
On January 25, 2020, a hyperpartisan news outlet called G News published an article further pushing the bioweapon conspiracy theory. It was titled, “Breaking news: China will admit coronavirus coming from its P4 lab.”4 G News was not the only media outlet pushing the narrative, but its involvement was significant because G News is a media outlet associated with Guo and Steve Bannon, former Breitbart executive and ally of President Trump. The two have formed a partisan alliance to push their shared anti-CCP agenda through the Rule of Law Foundation and the Rule of Law Society, which they founded in October 2017.5 Funded by Guo and managed by Bannon, Rule of Law aims to “protect and assist individuals victimized in China, particularly those penalized for speaking out against injustice.”6 Guo and Bannon were drawn together because both “naturally despise the Chinese Communist Party (CCP),”7 according to Guo. They also both have media backgrounds. Bannon was previously Trump’s chief strategist, and, before that he ran the right-wing news site Breitbart. Guo founded and funds G Media,8 which often posts anti-CCP stories across social media platforms, and prominently on the social media platform, Parler.
Prior to the first Yan report being released, Bannon said Wang’s YouTube episode featuring Yan was shown to and translated for him.9 As doubts about the origins of COVID-19 continued to proliferate across right-wing media networks, Guo and Bannon connected with Yan. This is when the pieces fell into place for what would become the Yan Report media manipulation campaign.
In interviews, Yan had been arguing that both China and the World Health Organization knew about the novel coronavirus earlier than they admitted. This is not a unique claim. Similar narratives, for example, were also circulating using the hashtag #chinaliedpeopledied, which went viral in March and April 2020.10 Yan put forward that she had evidence that the notion that the virus transferred from animals to humans was a “smokescreen” to hide its true origin, which she claims is a lab in Wuhan with close connections to the Chinese Communist Party.11 These claims are unfounded and have been debunked.12
While similar claims had been made by others, Yan stands out due to her background in science. Her CV says she has a medical degree from Xiangya Medical College of Central South University and a PhD from Southern Medical University.13 Prior to joining Bannon and Guo, Yan held a postdoctoral fellowship at Hong Kong University (HKU), where she was the first author on a COVID research paper that was published by Nature — one of the most prestigious biology journals in the world.14
Guo flew Yan to the US on April 28, 2020.15 In her most recent articles, she lists the Rule of Law Foundation and the Rule of Law Society as her formal affiliations.
In late April and early May, President Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo fanned the flames of the January rumor that COVID-19 was made in a lab.16 Trump contradicted his own intelligence team by saying he had seen evidence and that he had a “high degree of confidence” that it was created and released in Wuhan.17
On July 10, 2020, Yan traded her story up the chain from online and hyperpartisan news outlets to an interview on Fox News.18 During the interview she said she was in hiding from the Chinese government and referred to herself as a whistleblower, claiming to have worked on human-to-human COVID transmission as early as December 2019.19 Fox, in turn, called her a whistleblower in its article about the interview.20 It is the earliest article labeling her as such.
The interview garnered a lot of attention online with over 2.7 million views on YouTube and 18K reactions on Facebook.21 The YouTube video has since been removed by Facebook according to data from CrowdTangle, a “public insights tool” owned by Facebook.22 The day after this interview, HKU put out a press release refuting what Yan told Fox News about her research.23
Yan continued to ramp up media appearances. On September 9, she repeated her claims to Raheem Kassam, co-host of Bannon’s popular podcast and YouTube show War Room: Pandemic, editor-in-chief of the conservative news site National Pulse and former editor-in-chief of Breitbart London.24 On September 11, Yan told Loose Women, a British talk show, that she would publish the evidence.25 The interview is available on YouTube, and has over 1.4M views.26 Then the New York Post quoted Yan’s interview with Loose Women,27 as did Tech Times (8.8K followers on Twitter),28 the Daily Mail (2.6M followers),29 and Mint (1.9M followers).30
With Yan, Guo and Bannon were able to effectively exploit the active crisis of the coronavirus by spreading her claims about its origins and the wedge issue of mistrust of the CCP. However, reporters were still skeptical of her claims and comments across social media repeatedly clamored for evidence.

I have an awareness of checking my account balance when I want to buy something now. Thus, when I went to the mall, I try to control my shopping desires. I calculated the money I must spend on rent, the internet, phone bills, electricity and food. Also, I convinced myself that “those items are useless”, or “You may just use them for one time, then, you will never touch them anymore”. It sounds like brainwashing, but it works. And I do not regret it when I back home.
However, I noticed that I have to drink something when I am not at home. This time is tea.
I bought a baking mould last year, but it is so large. I had to use more butter, flour, eggs and sugar when I baked cakes. I bought a smaller one to save ingredients for the next baking. That reminds me to plan well and reduce impulsive consumption.
October 30th Wednesday & October 31st Thursday
Limocar, Greyhound and Uber
Lunch: Burger King
Dinner: Chinese BBQ
Handbag for Mom
I bought a coach handbag for my mom when I went to Ottawa Outlets. I considered a lot before I made the decision to buy it. There was a 50% discount and my mom would be happy to receive it. I did not buy something for myself except food, and my brainwashing still worked. Hooray!
I have no driving license because I cannot see the road clearly in the evening. Although I might be a driver in a few years, I have to talk about transport and the environment issue. More and more people own their private cars, no matter new or second-hand cars. We all know the negative influence of exhaust emission from vehicle engines, but we cannot bike in snowy or rainy days, and public transportation cannot depart as your requirement. If we want to take public transportation, we have to follow the time schedule.
I took limocar (from Sherbrooke to Montreal) and greyhound (from Montreal to Ottawa) because I had to go to Ottawa to have an interview for my American visa. Plus, I did not find a carpool. If I could drive and I had a car, I could drive to Ottawa in three and a half hours. However, I spent almost six hours on taking public transportation (limocar and greyhound).

Air Pollution 101 | National Geographic
Air pollution pops out in my mind and I would like to discuss a little bit to strengthen my no driving decision. We suffer from a terrible influence on the consumption of fossil fuels. Air pollution is the by-product of economic and industrial development. Air pollution leads to some acute and chronic diseases (Kampa & Castanas, 2008). Some children in Beijing are prone to respiratory diseases because of air pollutants. Franklin, Brook & Arden Pope (2015) also illustrate that some matters of air pollution have negative effect on humans’ cardiovascular system, and those matters increase the incidence rate of cardiovascular diseases. It is urgent to deal with air pollution and maintain environmental sustainability.

Brunch in Coco Frutti
Starbucks
In order to find a bright and nice place to study, Shaowei and I went to Starbucks, and I found the words to label ingredients on the cup, sleeve and napkin. The cup, sleeve, and napkin are made with 10%, 85% and 60% of post-consumer recycled fibre, respectively. I found a picture I took for Tim Horton's sleeve. It shows that it includes 85% of post-consumer recycled fibre.
Starbucks cup, sleeve and napkin
Tim Horton’s sleeve
I observed in Starbucks, Tim Hortons and the bus stop café in Nicolls. Most students did not take their cups to buy coffee, and they use takeaway coffee cups. Do you think the paper coffee cup is recyclable? Actually, the answer is NO. The paper coffee cup, so-called poly-coated cup, includes plastic.
youtube
The truth about recycling coffee cups - Hugh's War on Waste: Episode 3 Preview - BBC One
Consumers think their disposal coffee cups will be recycled because they throw them into recycling bins. However, those cups end up in landfills.
On October 30th, the CBC marketplace did a test to track the used coffee cups in Toronto. They found that by the end of the day, those coffee cups were found in the garbage only bins, both Starbucks and Tim Horton’s did that. These two coffee giants in Canada claimed that they recycled the used coffee cups, but they lied to citizens and fooled the public. After this news was exposed, Starbucks said they regret and would make progress. Three months later, the CBC marketplace did the same test. Nothing changed in Tim Horton’s. Starbucks set a new category of bins----Mixed recycling. However, the results were the same as three months ago.

Coffee Cups UPDATE: Are Starbucks and Tim Horton's recycling? (CBC Marketplace)
Poortinga and Whitaker (2018) illustrate that because of technical, economic and social reasons, disposal coffee cups are hardly recycled. Moreover, people use disposal cups outside of the shops. In other words, those cups hardly back to the shops. The contamination of organic materials may make those cups unrecyclable (Poortinga & Whitaker, 2018).
From my perspective, reducing the utilization of disposal cups can restrict production. Besides the plant consumption in the cup-making process, “disposable coffee cups generate about one-and-a-half times their weight in carbon dioxide emission” (Poortinga & Whitaker, 2018, p. 873).
We cannot ignore individuals’ influence. Mulligan (2014) says that “sustainability needs to be a daily preoccupation for all of us because our capacity to live sustainably begins with our existing environmental impacts and our modes of interacting with other people and society at large” (p. 5). Therefore, to improve environmental sustainability, I will bring my reusable cup.

The Weekly Roundup: Your Go-To Guide For Everything You May Have Missed This Week & More! 12/29 – 1/04
Welcome to Ben Greenfield's Weekly Roundup and Cool New Discoveries!
Ben Greenfield's discoveries from the latest news from the fronts of fitness, nutrition, health, wellness, biohacking and anti-aging research. I also recap my upcoming events and special announcements so you can keep up with giveaways, discounts, and more!
New Discoveries Of The Week: Cool New Things I'm Trying, Books I'm Reading, And More!
– Woo-Woo Book I'm Reading:
Stress Less, Accomplish More: Meditation for Extraordinary Performance is a new book sent to me by my friend Emily Fletcher, who was a former podcast guest in Meditation For Mind-Blowing Sex, Meditation For Insomnia, Meditation For Energy & Much More. Emily specifically developed a novel meditation technique for working people with busy lives. Now, you can learn to recharge anywhere, anytime – at home or at your desk. All you need is a few minutes and a chair (no apps, incense, or finger cymbals required). But this is not just another meditation book. In it, Emily teaches a cool trifecta of Mindfulness, Meditation, and Manifesting to improve your personal and professional performance, clarity, health, and sleep. You learn how to cultivate Mindfulness through brief but powerful exercises that will help you stop wasting time stressing. Plus, you’ll get Manifesting tools to help you get crystal clear on your personal and professional goals for the future. I'm digging it (and I'm usually NOT a fan of woo-woo meditation books). Get it here.
– Healthy “Vape” Pen I've Been “Smoking”:
FUM pen: I realize that I told you about this a few months ago, but I'm currently really digging this vape pen as a replacement for my habit of vaping organic tobacco and chewing nicotine gum, which I want to put the brakes on just a bit. OK, OK, this is not a vape pen per se, but rather an essential oil “inhaler” pen that is so simple and safe to use that even my kids are “taking hits” on peppermint essential oil before school. It's called a “FUM pen”. I've been taking hits on cinnamon and nutmeg for focus, lavender for relaxation, and peppermint for a pre-workout, lung and head-clearing effect. I've been using black pepper to break tobacco and nicotine and it works like gangbusters! Studies have even shown that using a pen like this with black pepper essential oils can help get rid of smoking and nicotine cravings (for those of you who have been chomping on too much of that nicotine gum I've also recommended). Plus, handcrafted just west of Calgary, AB, Canada, the thing just looks sexy and super functional. Get your FUM pen here, and get your essential oils to go along with it here. When you enter code BEN at checkout, you'll get free shipping on your pen in the U.S. and Canada when you spend $40 or more bones.

I’m often asked about how I plan and systematize my #workouts … With my level of busy-ness and travel I’m a big fan of **reducing decision making fatigue and keeping things very simple.** In my new 8 Week “Beyond Fitness” Quest Program (http://BenGreenfieldFitness.com/BenQuest – link in bio), I outline the very simple program I follow each week to maintain maximum fitness with minimum effective dose. My plan currently looks like this (and this is a *very basic overview*): Mon: 30 min single set to failure #weighttraining that includes a 4 minute Tabata cardio set + 30 minutes infrared sauna + 30 minutes walk or sport of choice Tue: 30 minutes kettlebell training or functional fitness + 30 minutes VO2 cardio (4 minute medium-hard efforts with 4 minutes recovery) + 30 minutes walk Wed: 60 minutes free day to do new sports/workouts or same as M/F + 30 minute walk Thu: 30 minutes #kettlebell training or #functionalfitness + 30 minutes mitochondrial #cardio (short 30 second hard efforts with 4 minutes recovery) + 30 minutes walk Fri: 30 min single set to failure weight training that includes a 4 minute #Tabata cardio set + 30 minutes #infraredsauna + 30 minutes walk or sport of choice Sat: any new workout, “epic” workout, #obstaclecourse training or sport such as snowboarding, #paddleboarding, #tennis, etc. Sun: #Spiritual disciplines – e.g. #fasting, plant medicine, hike, holotropic #breathwork, longer #yoga session, etc. During all walks, I’m catching up on phone calls for the day. All my #mobility is done with 10-15 minutes brief stretching, etc. in the mornings. That’s it. That simple! What’s your "minimum effective dose" of #exercise? And be sure to check out the Quest by going to my bio link.

Bryan, who uses his middle initial, R., to honour his late grandfather, Ronald Harbour, who himself always dreamed of a career on stage, was born in Kankakee, Illinois. He moved with his mother, Peggy, sister, Kristin, and brother, Brent, to Florida when he was only two years old. His mother worked as a newspaper reporter, and when Bryan was eight, the family moved to Los Angeles. They remained there until Bryan’s 11th birthworking day, when the same company transferred his mother back to Florida. He later moved with his family to Beverly Hills, where he attended Beverly Hills High School.
When Bryan walked out on the playground of his Beverly Hills grade school for the very first time, all the kids needed to know who his agent was. To Bryan’s chagrin, his mom pointed out that only kids who were actors had agents. Within a few weeks, Bryan and his sister, Kristin, decided that if they were to fit in at school, they too, essential an agent.
Being the smallest kid in his class, with a face like an angel, framed by a blond bowl haircut, Bryan began acting classes and within a year had his very own Hollywood agent.
Shortly after signing with The Savage Agency, Bryan landed a recurring role on Not Necessarily The News. Commercials and other TV spots before long followed, and Bryan was well on his way to becoming an actor.
Bryan says that moving back to California was a good experience for him. Living in Beverly Hills and riding around town in the back of a limo provided a unique lifestyle. But he soon located out on his return to Florida that riding around in the back of his friend’s decide on-up truck with his buddies could be just as much fun.
The Dattilos remained in Florida for nearly three years, but returned once again to California when his mother decided to break loose from her career in journalism and start her own television and film company, Harbour Lights Entertainment. This provided an opportunity for Bryan to return to the acting world, and within a couple of weeks, he and his sister landed lead roles in the feature film The Adventures of Grizzly Adams.
It was during this time that Bryan first began watching Days of Our Lives, and dreaming of one day appearing as an actor on the show. Bryan spent eleven weeks in Utah filming a feature, and during his time off, he’d wander into his grandmother’s hotel room while she was watching Days. Before he knew it, he too had become a fan. So when Bryan landed the part of Lucas Roberts on Days, he couldn’t wait to phone his Gran and tell her the good news. It was a dream come true for Mary Harbour, who’s only worry now is trying to figure out where to store all the tapes on which she records her grandson’s daily performances.
Bryan first appeared on Days on April 4, 1993. He is known as a big practical joker on the Days set. He doesn’t like props like fake hands or slime. He prefers to just play mind games on people.
Some of Bryan’s other TV appearances include guest spots on such popular shows as Doogie Howser, M.D., In the Heat of the Night, Charles in Charge, Class of ’96, and California Dreams. He also has a starring role in the 1993 feature film, Arcade.
Bryan graduated from Beverly Hills High School and attended Santa Monica College right up until the day he began taping his first Days episode. He majored in Psychology, hoping to become a psychologist, if a career in acting didn’t pan out. Bryan feels that studying Psychology gives him an insight into people and what makes them tick. This, he says, helps him to understand what his character Lucas is all about.
Bryan says, “Lucas is a kid who thinks that the way to a person’s heart is to tell them what they want to hear. He learned to seem out for number one during his years away at military school, and now that he’s in Salem, that’s the only way he knows how to act. He’s had to fend for himself most of his life, and he’s angry at his mother for not being there for him while he was growing up. He’s a kid with a good heart, but he has to learn to relate to people in the outside world.”
Besides acting, Bryan’s other passion is baseball. He played throughout high school and college, and would love to have been a pro. Landing the role on Days of Our Lives has been a double blessing for Bryan. The first week of taping, the show’s executive producer Ken Corday, approached Bryan wanting to know if he played baseball. It turns out that Corday has a passion for the game, too, and Bryan signed up temporarily to play on the Days softball team. “I’m the luckiest guy in the world. I’m doing the two things I love most in my life, acting on my favourite soap, and playing baseball!”
Bryan is single and lives in Los Angeles. His â€roommates†live in a six-foot salt h2o fish tank he keeps in the living room of his apartment. He also has a black Labrador named Vinnie, whom he takes to a dog sitter when he goes to work. At the doggy day camp, Vinnie enjoys playing with other dogs and relaxing while watching TV. Bryan says he used to leave a note and his 8×10 black and white photo on the car windshields of girls he found attractive. It worked like a charm and got him a lot of dates.

Jill Dandos murder: 20 years on, fresh witness accounts
Presenter Jill Dando (pictured above outside her home in Fulham) was murdered in 1999
The time is a little before midday on Monday, April 26, 1999. Vida Saunders is enjoying tea at a neighbour’s home when another friend comes knocking at the door. The new visitor is in a state of some agitation.
‘I could tell at once from the expression on her face that something wasn’t right,’ Mrs Saunders recalled this week. ‘I didn’t know then just how wrong it would be.’
The friend asks Mrs Saunders to accompany her to a house in the next street, Gowan Avenue. She has just seen something –— something very disturbing — as she walked past the address on her way home from the shops. Now she wants someone else to see it, too.
Nothing ever happened in their suburban enclave in Fulham, West London. At least, nothing very bad.
But that morning would be different. What had just taken place on the front step of 29 Gowan Avenue would make headlines around the world for years to come. The shock reverberates to this day.
‘I don’t think I fully grasped what I was going to see and it seems odd now, with hindsight, but I took my mug of tea with me,’ Mrs Saunders said.
A step by step account of Jill Dando’s last moments as she embarked on a shopping trip in Hammersmith before driving home
Jill Dando (left) and her fiancé Alan Farthing (right). Mr Farthing said he had held Jill’s hand while she was still warm before confirming to doctors that it was the BBC presenter
In those days, much of the white-painted Victorian frontage of 29 Gowan Avenue was screened from the street by a privet hedge and a small tree. ‘But what I saw as soon as we stepped through the front gate hit me like a physical blow.’
What she saw was the dead body of BBC television presenter Jill Dando, 37, killed only minutes earlier outside her own front door by a single gunshot to the head.
‘Jill’s body was lying at such an odd angle,’ Mrs Saunders recalled. ‘She looked like she had collapsed on the spot. The back of her head was against the front door and her chest was facing towards the pavement.
‘She was in a pool of blood, and I noticed her lips were blue and there were some small drips of blood running from her nose. I think we knew immediately that she was critically injured.
Twenty years on from the death of Jill Dando (pictured above) witnesses have revealed new testimonies
Police forensic officers at Gowan Avenue, Fulham, where TV presenter Jill Dando was murdered. Ms Dando died from a single gunshot wound to the head
‘She was still clutching a set of keys in one hand, probably her door keys or possibly her car keys. The handles of her handbag were over the other arm and her mobile phone was inside, ringing constantly.
‘Normally, I think, if you saw someone collapsed like that, your instinct would be to reach out and touch them, to try to help them and see if they are all right. But it was clear Jill wasn’t [all right].’
Mrs Saunders paused. ‘That image of Jill lying there. . . I would have visions, snapshots of it in my dreams and even when I was doing my laps when I went swimming. I couldn’t get it out of my head.
‘It has given me many sleepless nights. Of course, time moves on and memories start to fade. But talking about it again now brings it all back so vividly. It was, it is, awful.’
A leaflet which was handed out on May 4 1999 which was given out to passers-by in an effort to jog their memories and uncover new information
Six distinctive marks were found on the cartridge case (pictured above) used by the gunman who killed Jill Dando
Mrs Saunders has not spoken before about her role in the tragedy, except to the police. One can sense in her account a disbelief that she should have been caught up in the case. Because even 20 years later, the murder of Jill Dando remains one of the most shocking crimes of our times.
That Britain’s ‘most celebrated and loved’ TV presenter, ‘the nation’s sweetheart’ and the face of BBC Crimewatch, could be the victim of an execution-style killing, in broad daylight in our capital city, was extraordinary enough.
That the murder was without any clear motive and remains unsolved, despite a huge reward for information and myriad theories, has only added to the fascination.
One man was charged with and convicted of the murder. Barry George, a local loner and fantasist who had already served a prison sentence for attempted rape, was found guilty of the killing at the Old Bailey in July 2001. But his life sentence was later quashed on appeal, and at the end of his 2008 retrial, George was found not guilty.
Police search Gowan Avenue, Fulham, south west London Monday April 26, 1999
By then the trail seemed to have run cold. Or has it?
Today the Daily Mail begins an exclusive three-part reassessment of the Crimewatch presenter’s cold-blooded murder and the hunt for her killer.
Our investigations have taken us to the Balkans and across the British Isles. We are able to draw on previously unavailable police and prosecution documents and other official reports, new witness testimonies — such as that of Mrs Saunders — and interviews with detectives and legal sources involved in the two Scotland Yard investigations into the murder — as well as suspects.
Jill (pictured on holiday in the Seychelles) first got her big break in broadcasting in 1988 when she started presenting the BBC’s hourly national bulletins
We will be able to reveal some key findings of a secret police cold-case review of the murder, carried out only five years ago. We will expose the mistakes investigators made, the red herrings that were pursued — and examine the possibility of a third Jill Dando murder trial taking place, albeit more than two decades after the event.
Our new assessment will also probe the evidence against Barry George, a serial stalker of women, and the High Court’s refusal to grant him ‘miscarriage of justice’ compensation after he was cleared of the killing.
But first let us return to the fateful day itself.
April 26, 1999, dawned cloudy with a forecast of showers. But the life of Jill Wendy Dando seemed to bask in perpetual sunshine.
Born in Weston-Super-Mare in November 1961, she had followed her father and brother into local newspaper journalism. Her on-screen potential was obvious. After stints in regional news broadcasting in the South-West, her big break came in 1988 when she began a job in London presenting the BBC’s hourly national bulletins.
Viewers loved her from the start. She was a friendly celebrity, the ‘girl next door’ who bore more than a passing resemblance to Princess Diana. But unlike the Princess, Jill had a down-to-earth private life that included amateur dramatics, voluntary work in hospitals and churchgoing.
The haunting last images of Jill which were captured on CCTV just 40 minutes before she was killed
This images shows Jill leaving a store in Hammersmith before getting in her car and driving home
A devout Baptist from childhood — she was head girl at her school — Jill would become a presenter on Songs Of Praise.
Until moving to Gowan Avenue, she had shared a house in a quiet South-West London neighbourhood with her cousin, Judith.
What you saw on screen was what you met in the flesh. There was no ‘front’ to Jill Dando. And for the British public, she would become a chronicler of their everyday life at its best and worst.
In 1993 she was chosen to host the prime-time travel programme Holiday. Two years later, she took on the same role at Crimewatch, which she would present 42 times before tragedy struck and she became the story rather than the storyteller. In 1997, viewers voted her BBC Personality of the Year.
A set of CCTV images from outside the Kings Mall show Jill walking down the street with her handbag
Another images shows her walking through the shopping centre with her raincoat and bag
She was also spotted outside on the main High Street where she had been out shopping for the day
Her private life was equally serene. In November 1997 she had been introduced by a mutual friend to a consultant gynaecologist called Alan Farthing.
Mr Farthing — who would later oversee the births of Prince William’s children — was separated from his first wife. He and Jill fell ‘very deeply’ in love almost at once.
Within a month they were holidaying together in Australia. That New Year they watched the fireworks over Sydney Harbour Bridge and vowed to be there again for the Millennium.
In January 1999, two months after Mr Farthing’s divorce was finalised, they announced their engagement. Their wedding was set for September 25, 1999.
Police pictured outside the home of Jill in 1999 after a search
The couple spent almost all their time at Mr Farthing’s home in Bedford Close, Chiswick. The Gowan Avenue house was used largely as Jill’s administrative headquarters. She had only stayed there overnight twice in the weeks before the killing.
On Saturday, April 24, she went there to collect post. She noticed her fax machine had run out of ink and decided to return on the Monday to change the cartridge.
That evening, she and Mr Farthing attended a British Legion Poppy Appeal event at the Natural History Museum, which Jill was co-presenting. On Sunday Mr Farthing played golf in Stoke Poges, west of London, with a friend and Jill later joined them for lunch.
That night the couple were at home together in Chiswick. They watched the first episode of Jill’s new show, Antiques Inspectors, for which she had spent several days of the previous week filming in Dublin. The show’s launch was promoted by Jill posing in a black leather jumpsuit next to a vintage Aston Martin on the cover of the Radio Times. It was a little more risqué than her usual image, but fun.
The couple also wrote several letters. One was to Claridge’s hotel in Mayfair, where their wedding reception was due to be held. They discussed the guest list which was written in Jill’s Filofax. The same list would be used by Mr Farthing to organise her funeral.

The next day was to be the start of a two-week period at home for Jill, after months away filming Holiday and Antiques Inspectors.
She had an appointment for the first fitting of her wedding dress and planned to visit a stationer about the invitations.
Mr Farthing had an 8am meeting. He told Jill to sleep in but, typically, his fiancée insisted on getting up and making him breakfast in bed. He then left the house at 7.25, and rain was already falling.
Before they parted, Jill told him: ‘Today I’m going to be a lady who lunches.’ She had a charity luncheon engagement at the Lanesborough Hotel on Hyde Park Corner, but she didn’t make it. He would not see her alive again.
Records on Jill’s mobile phone show she made a number of calls on the day of her death
The last four hours of Jill’s life can be pieced together through eyewitness accounts, CCTV footage, till receipts and phone records. Only the last moments remain a mystery.
Records for her mobile phone and the landline at her fiance’s home show she made and received a number of calls that morning. All the people she spoke to were traced by police. No one she was in contact with in her last few hours sensed that she was worried. At worst she sounded ‘preoccupied’, but then she had so much to do.
She left Mr Farthing’s home just after 10am in her dark blue BMW convertible. The top was up because of the weather. She stopped to get petrol and milk at a garage on the A4, before parking in Hammersmith, West London, to visit the Kings Mall shopping centre.
While in Hammersmith she visited Ryman the stationers and bought fax paper. She bought other fax material from Dixons and The Link stores. Finally, at 11.01am she walked through the shopping mall towards the exit.
At 11.04am she was driving her car west along King Street. The last sighting of the BMW on CCTV was at 11.10am, when she drove from Winslow Road into Manbre Road, a rat-run route to avoid congestion on the Fulham Palace Road. Extensive analysis of all the CCTV footage that morning shows no evidence that she was being followed.
Sarah Pusey, a Customs and Excise surveillance expert, was also out in her car. Now a 53-year-old mother of two, Ms Pusey told us how she became one of the last people to have a friendly interaction with the TV presenter.
‘I was in a queue of traffic going towards Hammersmith,’ she said. ‘She was in a soft-top car coming the other way. I’m quite nosy. But you know when you’re in traffic and stop next to someone, you look.
‘I remember thinking “that’s Jill Dando” and smiling across at her. She smiled back.’
Ms Pusey, who has not spoken before about the encounter except to the police, was so thrilled she phoned a friend. Mobile phone records show her call was made at 11.13am. By the time she got home, the television news was already reporting Jill’s death.
Jill had told her fiance she would cook dinner for them that evening. Between 11.20am and 11.25am she visited Copes fishmongers on Fulham Road, where she bought two fillets of Dover sole.
According to a member of staff, she seemed jolly but was in a hurry, remarking that her car was parked just around the corner (in Dancer Road).
Jill’s mobile phone records showed she made four calls during her shopping trip that morning. They were to a friend, her agent’s assistant, 192 directory inquiries and the Prince Edward Theatre in the West End. She also received two calls, including one from the theatre’s box office.
A booking clerk spoke to Jill, confirming her tickets to see the hit Abba musical, Mamma Mia!. Jill was said to have sounded ‘excited and bubbly’. She told the booking clerk the tickets were a present for her fiancé, whose birthday was approaching.
That last phone call she took was at 11.23am. From background noises heard by the caller, she was probably still inside the fishmongers. She had less than ten minutes to live.
The next phone call to her mobile was timed at 11.31am. This time she didn’t answer and the call went to voicemail. It is likely that this was the ringing Mrs Saunders heard when she saw Jill lying dead on her doorstep.
Having left Dancer Road, Jill had driven, via Munster Road, the 600 yards to her home in Gowan Avenue. After that, her final moments can only be guessed at from fragments of sound and glimpses of a mystery man, undoubtedly her killer.
Jill’s next-door neighbour, Richard Hughes, said he heard two characteristic bleeps from a BMW car alarm, then footsteps. He told police that after 30 seconds he heard a scream, as if Jill knew the person, as if she was surprised, ‘a startled scream’.
He did not hear a shot. But when he heard a gate clang, he went to the window and saw a man walking away briskly. Another neighbour saw a similar-looking man ‘running’ along the pavement.
Nigel Jenkins, a former session guitarist for Cliff Richard, was at home five doors from Jill’s house, practising chords. Mr Jenkins, who has not spoken before except to the police, told us he heard a ‘bizarre high-pitched noise’.
‘It was the sound of a woman crying out,’ he said. ‘It was like a bark or a yelp — an odd, disturbing noise and I immediately thought: “I don’t like the sound of that.” He heard no shot and did not investigate further until the air ambulance arrived.
Now we return to the testimony of Vida Saunders. It confirms the blunder which, we can reveal, seriously undermined the police investigation before it had even begun.
Mrs Saunders’s friend, who first saw Jill’s body, was a neighbour called Helen Doble.
‘There used to be a GPs’ surgery a few doors up (from Jill’s home) and I ran there while Helen called 999 on her mobile,’ Mrs Saunders recalled. ‘I ran back with the receptionist, who took one look and said she thought Jill was dead and we shouldn’t touch anything.
‘I just stood there staring at my cup of tea, which I had put down on top of the garden wall, and everything went into slow motion. There was suddenly so much activity around us as the first emergency services arrived.’ This was around 11.50am.
‘Shortly after, we were escorted into her neighbours’ house, where we were interviewed for what seemed like hours. I recall an air ambulance landing in the local primary school playground.
‘While we were in the house I would intermittently look out of the window to see what was going on next door. The paramedics seemed to be working hard to try to resuscitate Jill.
‘When I saw them carry her body away on a stretcher, her face seemed pink again and I remember feeling relieved because I thought that they had managed to save her.
‘Later, I realised the change in her face from blue to normal again was because they had pumped oxygen around her body in what turned out to be a futile attempt to save her.’
Jill Dando was probably dead before she hit the ground. Mrs Saunders’s recollection confirms that everyone who saw her before the emergency services arrived realised she was dead. Yet extensive efforts to revive her were made at the scene by paramedics and members of the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service.
As a result, Jill did not reach Charing Cross Hospital — only three minutes away by road — until 12.30pm. The attempted resuscitation continued there for another half an hour before she was declared dead at 1.05pm.
The Mail can reveal that an official police report blames the resuscitation efforts for creating a major, perhaps insurmountable, obstacle to future detective work.
Jill’s clothes were ripped off to perform cardiac massage and the ground about was ‘trampled’ by those trying to save her. The body was not left in situ. Vital clues were bound to have been lost.
The unusual lack of forensic evidence at the crime scene would become a hallmark of the Dando case. And it was not absent because of the cunning of the killer, as we shall see in Part 2.
If the victim had not been ‘the nation’s sweetheart’, would so much effort have been made to rescue someone who was obviously past help?
If so, it was no help to the men tasked with catching her killer.
In 1999, Detective Chief Inspector Hamish Campbell was a senior investigating officer in the Met’s murder squad, based in Kensington, West London.
He had never met Jill Dando, though she had made an appeal on Crimewatch for one of his old murder inquiries and they had attended the same lunch at Scotland Yard, where she had spoken of her fears of a ‘hit’ being carried out on a Crimewatch presenter.
Campbell gave a detailed interview about the investigation to the Mail in the spring of 2001. Today we can draw on previously unpublished extracts from his contemporaneous recollection.
He and his team had been on call for a week but, with no murders to investigate, he had become fidgety. When he was told by a colleague that reports were coming through that a woman had been ‘stabbed’ in Fulham, Campbell decided to take a sergeant and go to see for himself. He did not even wait to hear if the stabbing was fatal.
Bad news travelled fast. As he was leaving the station, he got a call from his boss, Detective Chief Superintendent Brian Edwards. Campbell recalled: ‘He said: “Have you heard anything about this stabbing incident?”
‘I said I had and was on my way. He said: “Well, let me tell you something . . . there’s a suggestion it’s Jill Dando.”
‘I remember thinking: “Jill Dando stabbed? Who on earth would have done that?”
Campbell arrived in Gowan Avenue just as the ambulance carrying Jill’s body departed.
Within five minutes, his officers would discover a fired cartridge case on the doorstep and a single yellow bullet which had passed through the victim’s head, hit her front door and fallen to the ground.
This was no stabbing, then. Nor was it a street robbery gone wrong — Jill’s watch and jewellery had not been taken. They were dealing with something more unusual. Scenes-of-crime officers collected several exhibits including a fob and BMW key, a yellow metal earring, a Russell & Bromley bag and contents, fish in a white plastic bag, and a black leather handbag.
Then the rain began to fall again, adding to the difficulties of the murder squad.
DCI Campbell took shelter from the drizzle in the porch of a neighbouring house, having ordered his men to cover the house front, path and road nearby with plastic to stop further evidence contamination or loss. ‘I remember thinking: “How far could he [the killer) have got now?” ’
Later that day he attended the post-mortem examination. The respected forensic pathologist Dr Iain West found an entry wound behind the top of Jill’s left ear and an exit wound above the right ear. The impression of the muzzle of the murder weapon could be seen around the entry wound.
Dr West concluded that the gun had been pressed firmly against Jill’s head, acting as an effective silencer.
Jill’s right forearm had a small bruise on it, which may have been caused by her killer. However, there did not appear to be any defence injuries, nor was there any sign of a struggle at the scene — prompting police to conclude that she was taken by surprise from behind as she was about to unlock her door.
The bullet had damaged the lower part of the door, suggesting that Jill was crouched or had been pushed down when she was shot.
Her fiancé, Alan Farthing, was also at the hospital. He recalled to the Mail a few weeks after the murder how he had been called by Jill’s agent, Jon Roseman, at around 1pm: ‘The first question he asked was if Jill was with me,’ he said. ‘He had been contacted by the Press asking for his comments on reports that Jill had been attacked in her street. I asked if he’d tried her mobile.’
The terrible truth began to clarify. Mr Farthing was taken to Charing Cross Hospital: ‘They took me down what seemed like the longest corridor in the world to the casualty department and to a side room, where Jill was lying.
‘She had a towel wrapped around her head as if she had just got out of the bath, though it wasn’t covering all her hair. I could see it was Jill’s hair. She was lying in a hospital gown, looking peaceful. I held her hand, which was still warm, and confirmed to the officer it was Jill.’
The consultant in charge of the casualty department came to talk to him. ‘He explained what had been done to try to resuscitate her, but made it plain it had been impossible. She had not been clinically alive on arrival or at any stage during the attempted resuscitation.
‘As I was being taken back down this everlasting corridor, I was thinking: ‘“Why did something like this happen? How could it happen?”’
The same questions were being asked by DCI Campbell. He addressed a meeting of the Dando murder team at 11pm that night in the incident room next to Kensington police station. It did not break up until 2am.
They knew by then they were dealing with a ‘phenomenon’ and that the investigation would be the biggest of their careers. But they already faced serious problems. The crime scene had been ‘chaotic’ and the witness evidence so far was of ‘little quality’.
‘We had to ask whether she had been killed because of who she was or because of where she was,’ DCI Campbell recalled.
Perhaps only one person knew why Jill Dando had died. And that was the man seen fleeing along Gowan Avenue.
To find him, the murder squad would have to weigh a number of motives and in the end examined 1,393 potential suspects.
What made her death especially complex was the Crimewatch connection. Had she been the victim of an underworld hit?
But one of the most popular and persistent theories Operation Oxborough had to investigate was that Jill Dando had been murdered on the orders of the Serbian warlord and underworld boss Željko Ražnatović, aka Arkan.
In April 1999, British warplanes were taking part in Nato bombing of Yugoslavia in order to halt the ethnic cleansing of Albanians by Serbian forces in the province of Kosovo.
Earlier that month, Jill Dando had fronted a BBC1 broadcast appealing for funds to help the refugees. Two days before her death, the headquarters of the Serbian equivalent of the BBC was hit by a Nato missile, killing 17 staff.
On Monday we will meet the Serb ‘hitman’ who was accused of being the killer in Gowan Avenue. Tracked down by the Mail, he has spoken for the first time about his part in the Dando affair.

In February of this year Raheem Sterling gave a candid and at times funny interview with Talksport.
On hearing it John Cross, the Daily Mirror’s chief football writer, responded enthusiastically on Twitter. He wrote – ‘This is a quality interview. Listen and if you’ve never heard him before you’ll change your perception of @sterling7. He’s a really good guy with a sense of humour and fun personality.’
One of the first replies to the tweet was from a Manchester City fan. He wrote – ‘It was journalists like you that gave people that negative perception of him in the first place.’
Rarely on the vast, sprawling platform full of echo chambers and extreme opinions does a succinct truth manage to cut through a very complicated business, yet here it did. And while the interaction above doesn’t reveal any all-encompassing answer from which to uncover a solution from which we can ensure that the City and England star can now be left alone to get on with his football and personal life – because as stated, this is a very complicated business – it does shine a light into a corner. That’s important.
Let’s back up though, just for a minute, because many reading this will attest that the treatment dished out in recent years to Raheem Sterling in the media and on the terraces is anything but complicated: it is grounded in racism, pure and simple.
It is racism that explains why for an inordinate amount of time it was widely believed that Raheem had fathered numerous offspring. It’s racism that led to a young player being labelled ‘greedy’ and furthermore the personification of all that is wrong with the modern game simply for having the temerity to transfer from one Premier League club to another.
It’s racism that underpinned the ensuing blood-sport as a shy, talented and clearly thoroughly decent individual was hauled from the back pages to the front and became a national hate figure. Once there he was ‘Obscene Raheem’ for buying his mum a house. He prompted mockery for buying batteries in Poundworld. He was flash and cocky for possessing an expensive car. He was rounded on for not washing it. The lad couldn’t win in a game he was being made to play very much against his will.
Earlier this year he was criticised for eating breakfast the morning after the PFA awards. Earlier this year a nation erupted in erroneous fury when he got a tattoo. When he proposed to his long-term partner the Sun’s headline was “Wed devil: Love rat Raheem Sterling proposes to long-suffering girlfriend.”
It escalated to an obsession; a bizarre and unique and unedifying witch-hunt that inevitably seeped into real life. At away grounds the winger was and is routinely booed; the atmosphere hostile and venomous. Last December a 29-year-old man was jailed for racially aggravated common assault after kicking Sterling four times outside City’s training ground. “I hope your mother and child wake up dead in the morning, you n*****,” he shouted on approaching the player.
“The media, of course [has a responsibility] – everyone and everywhere has,” Pep Guardiola said this week. “You can write something and offend, create a conflict. Today the real power is the media, not politicians, not the governments, it’s the media. That’s why you have the possibility.”
Of course I too believe that the abhorrent and persistent campaign orchestrated against Sterling that began when he was a Liverpool player in 2012 and snowballed since is grounded in racism just as I too believe like you (presumably) do that to state so is a simple, incontestable truth. Where the complication lies however is in the numerous whys that follow that conclusion.
Why Raheem? Why have the media done this and why has their unrelenting negativity – for want of a much, much better word – ‘worked’ in a supposedly progressive 21st century? Furthermore, why has it been allowed to go on unchecked within the industry? Why has it thrived when so many journalists – like John Cross – have always known the person, not the persona?
For the first couple of queries I am out of my depth. There is nothing wrong in admitting that and in fact it’s probably right that I do so. I am white and this past week there have been far too many people with the same skin colour as my own pontificating and speculating on a subject they only vicariously know about. When it comes to racism in sport and in life my responsibility is to be appalled, protest by whatever means possible, but mostly it’s to shut up, listen and learn.
When it comes to the silent long-standing complicity of football journalists however, as their colleagues on the news desks and – at times – colleagues in the press boxes hammered and hammered at a young man’s reputation until it reached the point where a whole new creation was carved well, here I can speak up.
And I have. Like an untold number of other bloggers I have ranted and railed and castigated about the media’s treatment and portrayal of Sterling for several years now, always attributing it to racism; always wondering out loud why the last but one episode wasn’t the last.
Playmaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals he often received racist abuse after North London Derbies – Check out the video below…
In July 2016 for Football Fancast I compared Raheem’s coverage to that of Wayne Rooney. It was headlined: ‘The same tale told in black and white’. Two years ago for Unibet I urged every right-minded person to unite and make it known to The Sun and Mail that enough was enough; that we found the victimisation despicable and beyond reason. There have been others too, loads of them, all written in utter contempt and exasperation.
I say this not to big myself up. If you read my content on here you’ll know that is anything but the case. I relay it to pass on too my personal experience each and every time that has seen a groundswell of affinity where initially there was mostly scepticism. Liverpool fans. Manchester United fans. Club allegiances ceased to matter and instead normal, decent people were responding in larger and larger numbers agreeing that this overt bullying with racism as its genesis must be curtailed.
Last weekend Sterling was subjected to public and undeniable racial abuse at the hands of a Chelsea supporter and 24 hours later the player put up a post on Instagram wondering why footballers were treated differently in the media depending on the colour of their skin.
And finally; finally, finally, finally the heavyweights of football journalism stood up and spoke out. The big guns fired shots across the bow; the guys whose opinions hold sway; whose influence and platform is huge; whose jobs have always been secure enough for them to do this without consequence.
They condemned. They drew a line. The same went for Monday Night Football on Sky and the panellist’s discussion on BT Sport on Wednesday evening and most encouragingly of all ambiguity was dispensed with as the question was posed – why does Raheem Sterling endure such racial victimisation in the press and public alike?
This is an extremely welcome development and already it feels like something has changed for the better. Maybe. Hopefully. My query though; my confusion; my complication is this: what the hell took them so long?

I admit that even though I am far from the golden sheep of my family that I am going to miss my adoptive father and it plays at my mind a little bit that I have to pass on attending my late adoptive father’s funeral due to reasons related to my employment situation. However, Samantha andor any of my other family members who might look at this story one day please know that I send my love and wish the best for all of you regardless of how far I am from all of you. I am following my intuition by posting this story away from facebook and I also appreciate anybody outside of my family and all of my friends and acquaintances who also visit my blogs and look at my stories. I just felt the need to also say something to my dear younger sister Samantha and the rest of my family members in grief of my late adoptive father’s death that I feel more comfortable saying here.

Free To Choose What I Prefer Freestyle Story by Stella CarrierStart time around 850 amTemporarily stopped; between around 9am to 924 amResume time 229 pmStopped somewhere after 3 pm and before 435 pmResume time again 435 pmCompletion time 524 pm Alana Davis is a 32 year old woman who works as a part time adjunct professor at the University of Southern California in the Annenberg department School for Communication and Journalism and is happily married to 33 year old realtor Dan Victor and together they have two children 2 year old Carter Ellis and 4 year old Carmen Williams. The children have different names as both have names that were selected for them and approved by both of their parents by modeling agents. Alana Davis and Dan Victor agreed to keep secret names as both work in theater and as extras in various popular movies from time to time. Alana Davis is also popular among both her family members and friends because both her and her husband kind of have the similar charisma and physical appearance of celebrities Jay-Z and Beyonce. Alana Davis just moved to California a little over a year ago as she at first worked at the University of Southern California as an admissions counselor. Alana Davis was eventually offered the position of adjunct professor after two other popular and influential professors affiliated with the University of Southern California noticed that both of her children were becoming popular in the Los Angeles Times and other featured mainstream media articles not so much for their model good looks but for their genius abilities. Both children were placed into gifted programs and have been flourishing in their new schools. Alana is on her way home to a nice three bedroom house in southern California that her and her husband are sharing with another married couple that they are friends with in order to allow them to live in a house at a reasonable price. The time is now 4 pm and Alana wants to take a quick nap before both her and her husband come home around 530 pm. They are going to a dinner show together that is close by Disneyland but Alana wants to take a one hour and 15 minute nap first to recharge her batteries. Alana is strongly connected to her higher self and other members of her heaven spirit ally team and she notices that her intuitive and psychic abilities are expanding the older she gets. Before laying down to sleep, she pops in a meditation cd gifted to her from her 40 year old sister Gracie Nova. Gracie Nova is married like Alana but is voluntarily child-free but showers gifts on both Alana and her husband as well as Alana’s two children from time to time with gifts. Gracie Nova is able to afford these things as she consistently has been making over 2500 dollars a month after taxes for a food contractor affiliated with the United States Navy in downtown Washington D.C. Gracie Nova and Alana last saw each other a month ago as Gracie accompanied Alana when she took her kids to Disneyland. Gracie gifted her younger sister with a 100 dollar gift certificate to one of her favorite shopping malls that is close by the University of Southern California campus and a meditation cd that is said to connect people with both their heaven higher selves and celestial spirit ally team. Alana enjoys all the love that is showered upon her from both her friends and family members. However, Alana is looking forward to using the meditation cd today in order to see if she can maybe petition one of her main spirit guides or guardian angels to speak to her now 80 year old father Collin Graves who passed over 2 years ago. She had a close connection to him and was curious to connect with him after her older sister Gracie told her that she had a dream where both Alana and her dad Collin Graves were looking around an amusement park store together and told Gracie to tell Alana that he sends his love to Alana. Gracie intuitively knew that she was getting this message for Alana and then got the idea to get her the meditation cd in addition to the gift card. Anyhow, Alana has been using this meditation cd for over a month now. The first week she did not seem to get anything and was tempted to quietly donate the meditation cd without telling Gracie in order to be considerate of her feelings. Then on the 8
th
day, Alana unintentionally slipped into sleeping in the meditation and dreamed that she was inside a college building where a professor female with pink and purple hair scribbled the year 6891. Alana was in a classroom of what looked to be 5000 other students and woke up seconds after the College Professor exclaimed remember class think yourself as a genius. The dream was a little different than what Alana expected in order to contact her departed father but it gave her hope. Today is the 9
th
day, as Alana takes her nap before her husband and two kids come in, and she quietly slips off into a restful sleep less than one minute after she plays the 15 minute meditation cd. Alana is in front of an amusement park merrygo round but she is trying to make sense of the words Busch Gardens Williamsburg on the sign because she is aware she is lucidly dreaming. Something compels Alana to go towards the ride and she ends up going towards a gold door that has over 100 people having a picnic outside.
Alana looks around to see if her late adoptive father Collin Graves is around one of the picnic blankets as his company often had family picnics when he use to work. Alana senses that wherever she is looks unlike anywhere she has seen on earth as there are three bright suns in the turquoise blue sky, red orange purple and red mountains and grass that is a combination of purple, green, and blue even though the ground feels soft as a carpet. She hears a benevolent and loving sounding female voice that is identifies herself by the name of Hope with long waist length reddish and chestnut brown pin straight hair and dark brown eyes. Alana intuitively assesses Hope to be around 21 years in earth time and she asks Hope why she is present instead of Collin Graves.
Hope explains that Alana is going to be able to see Collin Graves within a week more in earth time but that he is busy catching up with four different departed family members and friends at the moment but he has arranged a time within 48 hours to visit with Alana and relay some encouraging details. Hope picks up on Alana’s inquiry about her and she admits that she is the soul of the spirit that her older sister Gracie miscarried over 17 years ago but that even Gracie is unaware that she conceived Hope during an illicit and casual sexual encounter as Hope changed her mind about incarnating on earth just a month after she was conceived due to the way her scandalous/illicit conception happened under circumstances that would have been too controversial for even Gracie to bear long-term andor obtain necessary support to adequately look after Hope. Hope got permission from one of Alana’s male spirit guides to help Alana on the condition that her memory is erased of their visit but not the knowledge that she gifts to her upon awakening. Hope was also granted permission to help Alana because she was a male professor in the mid 1900s somewhere in Western Europe before her death in the 1970s. Alana believed Hope’s story but made a bet with Hope that she will remember her upon awakening. Hope believed her but explained that Alana will remember more the karmic past life memory of Hope being the mother to both Alana and Gracie around the years 950 to 990 in what is now modern day Switzerland and not as the miscarried child after one month to Alana’s older sister Gracie now over 18 years ago. As Alana playfully laughed Hope touched Alana’s forehead and gave her a scroll of paper and a book. Hope then tells Alana that the book symbolizes the knowledge that Alana has already passed on to her two kids and the future knowledge that she is going to pass on to her future students once she becomes a tenured professor. The scroll symbolizes the message to script her ideal life on a public blog basis at least 6 times a week even if it means adjusting the time and frequency allotted for some of her other writing arenas. Hope mentors Alana to also ignore any ridicule andor harsh judgments that would come as a result of listening to this public scripting blogging advice as both support and harsh criticism actually generate powerful spiritual energy, creativity, and celestial fuel for imagination power that she can only go into further detail about within at least 30 years or more into the future. Alana wants to ask Hope more questions as both she and Gracie want to become published authors. However, Hope telepathically reads her thoughts and explains that another newly departed Professor will share more information with her within the next 24 hours of her visit. For karmic reasons, Hope explains that she promised both the main male spirit guides of Alana and Gracie that she is going to postpone further visits with both Alana and Gracie until after at least one of them passes over after their current lifetimes on earth. 8 seconds later, Alana is awoken by the cell phone call of her older sister Gracie. Gracie wants to call to get honest feedback on if the meditation cd works and she wanted to congratulate Alana on getting her adjunct professor job as she noticed the good news on facebook. Sure enough as Hope predicted, Alana remembered the dream and relayed it to Gracie who was excited for her but she did forget how Hope was related to both her and her older sister in their current lifetime. Alana’s good memory remembered Hope’s physical appearance and scripting advice but for karmic protection reasons she mainly remembered Hope more as the mother to both Gracie and Hope in a past lifetime in modern day Switzerland over 1,000 years ago (between the years 950-990 as Hope predicted in Alana’s mystical dream where she traveled to a celestial world/realm of heaven).

I confess that I am coping fine with the news that my adoptive father died yesterday and I am going to miss him, and one of my older adoptive brothers expressed understanding at me not attending the funeral due to my current employment situation. However, I sense that one of my younger sisters is understandably taking his death much harder and it is important for me to collect articles such as this in order to help her and my other family members much more impacted by his death to help me understand better how to give support.Lessons in love & loss: a grief psychotherapist on living with and learning from losing a loved one
