bombalurina, electra, mungojerrie for the ask game :3
Bombalurina: List three things you like about yourself
i like how quickly learn and retain and recall massive amounts of information on my special interest, i lost count a long time ago how many times ive been told i’m more like an encyclopedia than a person most people dont mean it in a positive way but its still mkaes me happpy knowing a lot about the things that make me happy
i like that i tend to be kind of a perfectionist when it comes to my art and writing because even if it takes me forever to get anything done and im never really satisfied im always glad when i do improve and i always find it better than it would be if i didn’t care as much as i do
even if im not even remotely outgoing i do make an effort to be nice to people
Electra: What’s your favorite book(s)? Why do you love it? Favorite quote from it?
its Kiss of the Spider Woman by Manuel Puig! I honestly could go on for days about how much i love this book but i’ll try and keep it at least somewhat brief.
I love how molina and valentin are well rounded characters with nuance and depth and humanity with clear character motivations and arcs whilst still being allegorical sowing the deep complexity when it comes to talking about romanticism and revisionism to cope and survive vs critical thinking and facing harsh realities head on even if hurts and could kill you. Its something that resonates deeply with me and i find it to be profoundly relevant.
i also really love the format of the book like the way its just a pages upon pages of dialogue with no tags at times making it difficult incredibly difficult to sort whos saying as they grow closer if youre not paying attention really drives home that molina and valentin really are two sides of the same coin and they need to find balance in their lives
i love how unreliable a narrator molina is and trying to sort through her lies truths and half truths to see whats real and whats not just has she herself struggles to distinguish fiction from reality
i love how closely molina’s movies tie in with whats happeing in the reality within the reality of the story both because its just good writing in general to have everything tie together and nothing in the book feels wasted but also it really further hammers in theme of fiction/reality that the story is centered around
i love that it has a sympathetic trans main character and it was written in the 1970s
and my favourite quote even though theres a lot of really good quotes is
“I’m tired, Valentin. Tired of hurting. You don’t know, I hurt so much inside.”
its such a powerful moment because it’s the first time that molina allows herself to be willingly vulnerable and truly honest with valentin as well as herself and face reality. its the moment where she finally switches from a passive character to an active one. it really marks the shift from self centered molina at the beginning of the boopk who only lived in her own fantasy world and licked boots to get by to the molina at he end of the book who actively fought against a corrupt political system of her own volition out of love for another human being even if it ultimately costs her her own life
Mungojerrie: What makes you laugh?
most of the time my sense of humor rends to lean more on the witty yet sardonic side of things bust also at times i can be quite silly and imature and my heart can easily be warmed by a loving parody of something i care about so really depending on what mood im in my go to comedies are tv/movie wise blackadder, anything monty python related, queer duck (dont @ me i know it has a lot of problems), la cage aux folles (1978 or the musical) and then theatrewise howard crabtree’s when pigs fly, hms pinnafore, pirates of penzance, and the drowsy chapperone
