Week 3: Currently Watching
So I did not succeed in waiting 2 weeks for the final episodes of Our Beloved Summer (OBS). I did wait until Tuesday to watch both episode 13 and 14 back to back and these episodes weren’t mind-blowing in terms of development, but I think they were good for building up to the final 2 episodes. At least I hope so. OBS hasn’t disappointed me yet, so I think they will do a great job with the wrap up.
There hasn’t been a dull moment yet. Everything that has happened has held some significance to the story, and they’ve circled to back to the moments that were seemingly insignificant. I’m curious what, if anything, will be shown about that last day of the documentary filming when they were in high school. I’m pretty sure the producer left the camera on to capture if anything would happen between the two of them as he ran back for another battery - I think that was just an excuse. I’m hoping we’ll get to see something, because Ji Woong changed his mind on filming the documentary after watching the recordings, so there had to be something there.
I also decided to re-watch the final episode of The Red Sleeve (TRS) and boy, was that a bad idea. It was just heartbreaking to watch Deok Im slowly lose herself. She lost her son and then her friend. It was also heartbreaking to watch San lose her. It was just an entire episode of pain and the ending did not bring much comfort. It was only after they lost everything and died that they were able to be together.
I was trying to think of another tragic love story, and one that I would compare TRS to would be Youth of May (YoM).
***Spoilers for those who have not seen YoM yet***
Both female leads died young and the male leads had to continue living without them. What made YoM less tragic was that even if it was just for a short while, Hwang Hee Tae and Kim Myung Hee were able to love each other to the fullest. They were able to confess their feelings and share their love. Whereas with TRS, Deok Im hid her feelings to the very last moment. Even in death, in that last scene, she never said her feelings out loud.
TRS was so beautifully tragic. I plan to re-watch the entire series. There’s probably so much to pick out and analyze. I do hope Junho and Lee Se Young are able to do a modern drama at some point in the future - and please have it be a sappy rom com. 🙏

rant about 13 Reasons Why
i very very very much dislike 13 Reasons Why. the people who made the show are so inconsiderate of the people who are truly suicidal. im very upset.
when there is an onslaught of teen suicides in the future, i wouldn't be surprised if a lot of it has to do with the terrible influence of that show.
It shows the inaccurate idea that no one cares, that if they are sad that there's no hope. It romanticizes suicide and that's an awful thing. This doesn't shed light on suicide, it makes it seem like some glorified act of heroism. That once you're gone you'll be talked about and admired, that everyone who was mean will "get what they deserved" and regret the things they said. It practically encourages it.
The producers of the show consulted professionals in suicide prevention and talked to them about the portrayals of suicide in media, and the producers did almost everything they were warned NOT to do by the suicide prevention workers. You know, the people that actually deal with suicide on a regular basis? The ones that probably know a couple things about the psychology of the poor souls who are burdened with thoughts of suicide? Yeah, them. These experts have very openly expressed their disappointment with the way the producers handled making the show despite the advice that they were given.
They graphically portrayed rape and even went as far as actually showing the suicide on-screen. It's one thing to have suicidal characters in a show, that's not the problem that I am trying to bring to attention. Maybe, if they avoided actually showing the things in such detail, and maybe if they didn't make it seem like an okay thing to do.. you're right. It could be a good show.
The fact that there are people saying that people who may decide to kill themselves after watching are “weak” and should “know better” is very ignorant. You've probably known and cared about someone who is/was suicidal, almost everyone has. And since that's the case, I'm sure you're aware that their mental health is very unstable and it's difficult for them to fight off all of the terrible thoughts that they have. Right? Of course you do. And so, you're telling me, that if said person watched the show and saw all of these inaccurate and warped portrayals of suicide and terrible people, they wouldn't be bothered? Or if they did, that would be their fault, for "not knowing the difference between television and reality." ?
I understand that if they are easily set off, they should be careful before they decide to watch. But everyone gets curious now and then. Curiosity killed the cat, right? Who's to say that it would be all their fault if some poor person who simply wanted to see what it was like ended up being very distraught by the show and possibly had thoughts of suicide?
I'm not sure if you truly understand the depth and struggle of mental illness, but if you did, you would see that the show puts people in very real danger.I understand where you're coming from, and I know that I probably won't change your mind. But you won't change mine either, because I care a lot about people who are suicidal and I've heard from multiple friends that I care about very much that the show caused very unsafe thoughts for them, and they couldn't even continue to watch.
You can go ahead and enjoy it, that's all up to you. I don't look down on you or anything, I just have a very strong aversion to shows like this and I am not going to advocate a television series that is willing to have such dangerous actions portrayed on-screen. I want my friends to be safe. I want everyone to be safe.
