Have you seen the secret ending yet? 👀
I didn’t know what that was til you sent this, but NOW I HAVE
First of all, GORGEOUS ANIMATION. Second, Sora wakes up laying in a puddle in Scramble Crossing. The shallow water and mirror effect of the puddle(s) are similar to the salt flat-inspired Final World, the KH equivalent of purgatory… With the KH4 trailer having shown us that Sora wakes up 7 days after arriving in Quadratum, some part of him must still be asleep here.
7 days is the duration of a Reaper’s Game in TWEWY and since Neku also appears in Scramble Crossing after he dies, as well as this ending’s emphasis on the 104 building… maybe Sora has to deal with something like the Reaper’s Game to get a second chance at life. I doubt it’d be a direct crossover, but maybe. DDD does suggest Sora and Riku will meet up with their TWEWY pals eventually.
Sora’s side of this universe is golds, oranges, and reds, while Riku’s is silvers, purples, blues. Matching their character color schemes as well as their joint reality shift Keyblade. The first shot we see is the puddle reflecting a representation of these two sides. They stand across from each other, but they make up the whole puddle. They mirror each other as Riku and Sora’s characters do in this ending, but the puddle itself is also a mirror.
And Sora’s side is the only one with puddles/reflections/mirrors. While they seem to be in the same universe, I don’t think Sora and Riku are in the same world or on the same dimensional plane. Maybe a parallel dream world situation like DDD, a mirror world like Toybox, but then, I’m getting a lot of CoM vibes, too… I also like how Sora wakes up in water, which has always represented darkness, with the camera angled at the ground, while Riku rises surrounded by bright light, with the camera angled at the sky. I just think the constant yinyang-ism of these two is neat.
Anyway, something else that stood out to me is that one of the transitions from Sora’s side to Riku’s side is through this billboard that looks to be a PlayStation ad or some kind of gaming system. We go through the screen, similar to when Young Xehanort yeeted Sora into Verum Rex.
And Riku has Yozora on his side, who we know is a video game character in the KH universe. Clearly, probably, Yozora is gonna be the link between Riku and Sora, since he’s like a fusion of their designs, color schemes, motifs. Man even has one red eye and one blue eye.
But does that mean Riku’s in the Verum Rex video game that exists in the world Sora’s in, Quadratum, or is Verum Rex Quadratum? Is it a world you can go to in Quadratum like how you can go to Disney worlds in KH? Hmm.
Then we see a hooded figure in a black coat that I’m assuming is the Master of Masters making a heart in front of the moon — gee I wonder what that means! And I’m too lazy to find another pic, but MoM is in the same gold light part of the world that Sora is. Though like I said, in this ending, I’m pretty sure Sora’s not on the normal material plane yet. Not until he wakes up in KH4.
Ah, and then the theme is “Reconnect” and that could mean a couple things. The most obvious takeaway is Sora and Riku having to reconnect since they’re separated in this ending. But it could also mean reconnecting with the reality they come from… What I want to know is, MoM is originally interested in Quadratum because it’s a place neither light nor darkness is supposed to reach, right? But in this ending, we see his hands form the symbol for Kingdom Hearts. Why would he want to summon KH there?
My working theory right now — and I could be completely wrong — but my working theory is he wants to destroy Kingdom Hearts, rid the universe of darkness and light. Just based off of what we know about the MoM, he’s lived through multiple Keyblade wars so he’s seen the destructive influence light and darkness have had with their constant clashing, seems to understand light and dark cannot exist without each other, and was obsessed with reaching a world free of light and dark — a world he couldn’t even conceive… Maybe he gets to Quadratum and realizes he brought dark and light with him from the KH reality, thinks there’s nowhere he can go that light and dark can’t reach, and decides he’s going to destroy Kingdom Hearts, God, to liberate the universe, which would literally tear apart reality… And what he doesn’t realize is that so long as people continue to care and feel and have hearts, light and darkness, and thus Kingdom Hearts, will always exist. Cue shonen hero speech delivered by Sora and/or Riku about accepting the light and darkness inside of you instead of rejecting one or the other — because accepting the darkness is how Riku became immune to the corrupting influence of it (this is also where Xehanort went wrong wanting to create a new world of only light and Eraqus went wrong in his teachings believing darkness must be destroyed. One cannot exist without the other and both are necessary, reality depends on this duality). Cue epic boss fight.
But that’s just a theory! With some of Eraqus and Xehanort’s last words being about how it’s too late for their generation but not this one, before Xehanort hands Sora the X-blade, I think it would make sense to continue the theme of this generation understanding light and dark and how to create a brighter future better than the past generations did/do, which includes the MoM.
