I think there are definitely some valid perspectives here even if i don’t 100% agree with all of the points here, i do want to give my 2 cents because idk I’m an annoying Jew who talks a lot
i do very much agree that the left’s fetishization of revenge and vengeance killing is very very frightening, especially as a Jewish person who knows the history of justifying violence against minorities in the name of “justice”. (Look at the entire history of antisemitism, and if you don’t care about jews,,,, well first off fuck off but second off look at the history of every minority out there and you will see countless lawless murders justified by the fact that the victim was “bad” in some way)
At the same time I disagree with the idea that this attack was a senselessly expression of frustration and anger
I did already make a post loosely discussing why I and so many others find this assassination to be justified (and I do think it’s important to differentiate that this wasn’t a random shooting it was a targeted assassination)
But it’s also a complex topic and i think it’s really important to bring up concerns about everyone celebrating deaths of the “bad guys” with no internal reflection.
Personally i believe emotions are inherently morally neutral, even distasteful emotions like the desire for violence or revenge. Actions have morality not feelings. Expressing those kinds of feelings isn’t inherently immoral but if left unchecked can lead to a dangerous echo chamber where people start to internalize and validate dangerous ideas about who “deserves” to die
Im starting to talk in circles a bit here, one because I think there’s valid points on both sides of the at and two because the truth is we won’t know the results of this killing for a long time. It’s a butterfly effect, and we can’t really predict how it will affect and inspire people. It could lead to protests that finally manage to change laws or it could lead to something much more frightening. All we can really do is check our biases and encourage the people around us to do the same, and just keep moving forward
I don’t think laughing at the memes is wrong nor is feeling a sense of vindication, but I do think it’s important to make sure you’re not falling into dangerous thought patterns of “bad people deserve pain and suffering and it’s my right to exact that vengeance”
I feel like maybe i should actually say what i think about the shooting. Idk
First off. I can understand the shooter's motive. And im not going to pretend like I don't. But i dont think that empathy in this situation isn't an immoral thing. Empathy has no morals.
But he still murdered someone and murder in any way, shape, or form is bad. The action is unjust. It does not bring people back, it only satiates a primal urge to see a man suffer and die.
It's the left's obsession with death. Whether it be killing yourself or killing someone else. No one, nobody, no matter who you are deserves to die. And that includes evil evil people like the ceo of an unjust insurance organization.
You do not solve structural inequality with one act of violence.
And so, even though I have empathy for the shooter, I do not idolize him. I do not like him. I wish to see him tried fairly in a court of law. Because guess fucking what, your actions have consequences. I don't care if he pulled the trigger on big insurance. He's still a murderer and that supersedes any empathy I have.
Things he could have done instead of murdering someone:
1- taken his anger out on a fake target at a shooting range
2- taken some deep breaths
3- not murder someone
If you believe this is a justified act, i can't convince you otherwise. But I believe you are wrong
Violence for the sake of violence does nothing in terms of direct action
And, on top of that, the only reason why the shooter had means and motive are structural problems in the us, neither of which will be solved by one jackass with a gun
Insurance has no federal regulations, shooting one insurance ceo will not create federal regulations
The us cares more about guns than safety, shooting one insurance ceo with a fucking gun does not help in terms of gun regulation
And the only reason this is big news is because it was the shooting of a ceo. If the shooter decided to open fire on any other civilians in the area, just normal dudes, this would not be news in the slightest. It would be normal
I hope the shooter is apprehended. I hope he receives a fair trial. I hope he receives a punishment that is just for the crime he committed. And I don't want that punishment to be the death penalty because as I said before
Murder is always wrong
The murder of a ceo is wrong, and the murder of the shooter after the fact is wrong
