Getting a batch of cooked apples going, like I've been wanting to do for a while now!

Still slightly amazing, just how much easier prep work like this can be, if you actually have a workstation set up at an appropriate height! 😊 One of the reasons I put off doing this, tbqh, with as much of an awkward hassle as it was, trying to get much done in our cramped much less accessible old kitchen. You were either trying to do stuff sitting sideways to it, on a cluttered too-high counter surface, or working in your lap. Also, naturally I was still in the earlier stages of trying to adjust and figure out how to get much of anything done as a new wheelchair user.

I mean, picking up that more ergonomic peeler (for like £2 at Tesco!) has made a huge enough difference to trying to get some basic prep work done, without ending up with seriously cramped-up hands/arms and aggravating pain from these wonky bendy joints. You can maybe imagine how much good the full-body awkwardness trying to do pretty well any kitchen work kitchen was doing my carcass.

Of course, having at least one handy accessible working surface set up to fit my needs better was one of the major reasons I did make sure to set up thar table there in this new place. But, I can't help but still get impressed at how much easier that makes so many things on the daily. And, I am so glad to have (a) enough space available to set things up better, (b) a cleaner slate to work with, moving into this previously empty apartment, and (c) both the means and support to, like, totally reasonably just pick out a new IKEA table to suit my needs. (As just one example.)

Anyway, these Mystery Swedish Apples had been sitting around at cool room temperature for maybe a week and a half, two weeks waiting for me to get around to dealing with them--and a couple of them were starting to look the part. That chunk of an apple waiting to the side was the result of a couple of bruises I'd missed earlier, plus needing to sample one for quality control purposes. 😁 Yep, pretty tasty! Maybe especially as the first fresh apple I'd tasted in the better part of a year.

(No idea what variety these even are, just that there were several prominent "Svenska äpplen" signs around them. Still not sure after the taste test, though very possibly some Swedish variety--even better! Looked nice and fresh then, and pretty promising as cooking apples. Maybe a little more toward the sweeter side than I would normally look for, but still looking pretty damned good compared to much of what I could readily find around London.)

All done! And just about ready for the stove.

I was craving some pretty basic stewed apples, with basically just a hint of spices. Already added to the pan: the fruit tossed with a spoonful of lemon juice, about a tablespoon of honey for the hint of flavor more than sweetness, and maybe a couple teaspoons of butter. Yet to go in: a dash of pre-ground nutmeg, plus bigger sprinkles of ground allspice and cinnamon. No ginger here right now, or I would also add (preferably) a couple of fresh slices of that too.

Now on and simmering away under a lid!

Stirring about 5 minutes in. Did I add too much water to keep it from sticking? 🤔 Anybody's guess!

Also, waiting to the side, for flavor adjustment as needed at the end:

I was so glad to spot some granulated Splenda-alike at the nearest grocery store this evening! For whatever reason, any form of sucralose seems way less popular here than I would have expected? 🤔 This is actually the first I've found at all, just sold as a sweetener. It's a pretty common ingredient in prepared stuff, but not so much on its own. It's also the main artificial sweetener that doesn't taste actively gross to me.

(Stevia isn't nasty, but just doesn't taste like anything. My mom was exactly the same way with it. Guessing it's some genetic variation, like with soapy cilantro or bitter brassicas. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Could be much worse! Just not helpful with so many products using stevia extracts now. Juice drinks are just very tart at worst, but one essentially unsweetened chocolate-coater wafer protein bar was disconcerting as hell.)

I was actually considering buying some maltodextrin as a base and trying to figure out decent proportions for mixing up my own granulated version with that pure sucralose powder which I ordered basically as soon as I saw how hard it is to find in stores here--for easy baking substitution, especially. But, glad to see that I can indeed find some! And without, like, paying extra to order the stuff from Germany for the convenience value.

2 Months Later It was funny, Y/n thought; how fast things could change, how much faster they could go back to being the same. Maybe she’d taken them for granted, maybe she should have appreciated it more. But it didn’t matter, soon, it would all just be a memory anyway.

In a month and a half. Six weeks exactly

By the rate things were moving at, that would be gone before she could blink and by then, Y/n would be a married woman. Mrs. Warren-Wang. It wasn’t the name she’d have chosen for herself, but then again, she hadn’t really chosen much when it came to what being married to Daniel would constitute. Her mother and Alice though, they’d had a field day making the arrangements. They’d chosen everything; from the big things like the perfect venue and the cake to little things like party favors and color schemes. They were so excited, and sometimes, Y/n wished that she was excited too, but really, she dreaded it. She was dreading her own wedding day.

When a large hand stationed itself at her back, pecking the side of her head, Y/n tried to blink away the weighty thoughts that seemed to sink her. Returning to the moment, Y/n drank in her surroundings as if it were the first time, even though she'd been there all night. They’d done a wonderful job, the decorators that her parents had hired; turning the grand ballroom at Delice into an indoor fairy tail; an artificial tree sprouted from the center of the room, its plastic branches stretching all around against the high ceiling, with twinkling fairy lights woven into the perpetually green leaves to combat the intentionally dimmed setting. In mason jars, centerpieces with light colored flowers and lone candles sat at the middle of round tables, scattered strategically about the room, on top of pristine white table cloths. It might have been the perfect engagement party, if Y/n actually wanted to be engaged. “Have I told you how beautiful you look tonight?”

Chuckling quietly, Y/n couldn’t help but blush. At least he was a sweetheart, it could be worse. “You have, but I don’t mind hearing it again,” turning in his embrace, Y/n looked at Daniel through her thick lashes. He was her future, whether she loved him or not. She was learning to though, maybe. They’d only recently moved in together, in a place his parents had gifted them, just one street over from where Y/n grew up and she was beginning to find that he wasn’t terrible to share a home with; he respected her opinions and never made a decision without running it by her.

“Well,” he grinned, “You look absolutely stunning,” leaning down, Daniel caught her lips in a sweet kiss, and on instinct, Y/n reciprocated, flattening her palm of the lapel of his black suit coat, “I love you,” he murmured when they pulled apart.

Y/n wasn’t sure if she would ever get used to saying those words to him, but for the sake of making things easier, she hoped she could. “I love you too,” it felt foreign, saying it to Daniel, and every time she did, Y/n a painful pang in her chest followed by the unshakable feeling that she was betraying Keanu, the man she really loved.

He had taken her engagement in stride, though Y/n could see that even if he didn’t tell her, it bothered him. They’d stopped going out, to avoid being seen in public and really, the only place they ever met up was at his house, after days of planning in advance. Keanu had, unfortunately, become her dirty secret.

“Your parents want us to say a few words before everyone starts leaving,” no wonder they liked him so much, he was always willing to do whatever they asked. “Shall we?”

Y/n nodded slightly, letting Daniel lead her to the head table, up at the front of the room. Unlike the rest, their table was long and rectangular, similar floral pieces dominating the center of the furniture, occasionally punctuated by picturesque platters of sugary delights; macaroons that obeyed the theme and little round cakes with swirls of champagne flavored frosting on top. Behind their table on the raised portion of the large room, hung white and pink drapes, flowing effortlessly with floral garlands holding it in place at the top.

Taking their places, Y/n stood next to Daniel, looking at the perfect picture of a doting fiancee, graciously accepting a glass of champagne as someone else handed him a microphone. When he pulled out a chair for her, Y/n smoothed the back of her ankle length, rose gold dress, the thick glittering bands running vertically along the garment rough beneath her fingers. Like everything else, the dress was her mother’s choice; long, stylish, billowy sleeves and a generous ‘v’ neck with a slit that exposed most of her legs when she sat, and finally a gold belt at her waist. Y/n was sure that her mother would be choosing her wedding dress too.

Maybe she should be the one getting married.

When Daniel reached for her left hand, Y/n let him take it, trying to smile lightly as he cleared his throat to get everyone’s attention. “Ladies and gentleman,” he glanced around; all eyes were on him before long. He was like that, Y/n had found, able to command a room easily; charismatic, charming and strikingly handsome, women wanted him and men wanted to be like him. “It has been a great pleasure to be able to celebrate our engagement with you, and Y/n and I are both so grateful that we’ve gotten to share this time. But I’d like to keep you for just a minute more, so I can propose a toast to my lovely fiancee,” just after bending to kiss the back of her hand, he let to go to raise his glass, “Y/n,” he looked to her, “You are incredibly beautiful, inspiringly intelligent and everyday spent with you has been adventure, which is why I can not wait to make you my wife; so we we can spend the rest of our lives together, going new adventures, building new experiences and loving each other. To my love; Y/n.”

Just as he sat Daniel kissed her quickly and the guests cooed quietly and when they broke, Y/n could feel all eyes on her, expecting her adoration for her groom-to-be next. What was she supposed to say anyway? As she stood, Y/n inhaled sharply, her heart thumping erratically when nothing fruitful would come. That was when the idea came to her; just say to him what she would to Keanu; should be easy right?

Right.

“Daniel,” with no time to waste, Y/n dove right in, trying to make the whole thing more realistic, “I don’t think that I could have gotten luckier; you chose me, and for that I will always be honored. I never thought that it was possible for me to love a man the way I love you, but still everyday,” it was much harder than she initially thought it would be; singing praises of love and adoration to a man she barely felt for. As she continued, with Keanu in her head, wishing that it was him there instead, Y/n’s eyes stung and her throat burnt, the emotion too heavy to be quelled. Maybe they’d think it was happy tears. Maybe she’d break down right there and prove them wrong. “Everyday, my love for you grows. You are better, so much better, so much more, than anything I could ever have dreamed to have in a husband.” Y/n’s tongue longed to say Keanu’s name, but she held it, even as the tears now flowed freely and she sniffled noisily, “Daniel,” Y/n breathed deeply, “Thank you for being everything a girl could want, and if I love you the way I do now, I can’t wait to see how much I’ll love you tomorrow, and everyday after that.”

An attendant took the mic and as Y/n sat again, their guests cheered. “See,” Heather leaned in, close to Y/n’s ear, “That wasn’t so hard now wasn’t it?” Swallowing thickly as warm tears tangled in her lashes, blurring her sight, Y/n kept her head trained forward, barely able to nod at her mother’s venomous words.

The pictures had already started to make its rounds on the internet and Keanu needed a glass of whiskey just to look at them. Y/n, his Y/n, in the arms of another, who surely couldn’t love her the way he did. Maybe it was selfish, maybe it was wrong, but Keanu just wished that she could leave Daniel and be with him; forgo her responsibilities and they could be together, without having to hide. It should have been him after all; he should be the one at her side in those pictures, who she was going to marry. But Keanu couldn’t ask Y/n to do that, he could never hurt her by requesting that she leave everything she knew just for him.

If only love could be enough.

He hadn’t realized that his eyes had grown tear filled until a knocking at the door had him hastily swiping at them as he stood. Tossing his phone to the sofa, Keanu padded barefoot towards the door, gasping quietly at the sight on the other side of it.

“Hi,” she sobbed, one word enough to tell him how broken she felt, her lips quivering and tears falling freely. A cab was just pulling off the curb, signaling that more than likely, no one knew where she was, at least for now. “I hate this,” Y/n’s voice broke and she ran her hands anxiously through her freed hair. Still dressed for the engagement party, though with slightly smudged make-up, red eyes and stained cheeks. Still Keanu thought that, without fail, Y/n was still the most beautiful woman he’d ever been lucky enough to lay eyes on, “I hate this so much.”

“It's okay,” he gritted his teeth, trying to suppress his own tears as he pulled Y/n against his chest, kissing her hair as he rubbed her back soothingly, “It’s gonna be okay sweetheart.”

“No, it's not,” she blubbered, hugging him back and burying her face into his old t-shirt, finding comfort in his smell and the way his heartbeat felt against her cheek, “I….I just…” Nothing would come, what could she say that he didn’t already know?

Keanu thought if his soul could be shredded to pieces, then that was what it would feel like. His heart was in his throat and all he wanted, right then and there, was to make everything better for Y/n; to dry her tears and ensure that no ill fate ever befell her. He wanted to be her knight in shining armor and the person she could rest her head next to at night. But he couldn’t be that, he might never be that. Feeling completely helpless to her plight, Keanu led them inside, stopping short in the hallway, “I’m so sorry,” a lone tear escaped his whiskey orb, so much more still kept painfully at bay. Keanu felt like he’d failed her somehow; Y/n had meant more to him than most and he couldn’t protect her from what she’d been running from.

Y/n didn’t pull away, but her tears slowed, the security that he offered enough to make her feel better, even for a bit, “It’s not your fault,” her reassurance was meek, but he knew that it wasn’t how she meant it.

“What can I do?” Keanu pulled her away for a minute, surveying her disheveled form, brushing some hair from her face, only to gently cup her cheek.

Y/n’s fingers slid from his forearms, gliding over his broad shoulders as they made their way to cup his neck, “Make me forget,” her whispered words drew him in as Y/n stepped closer, “Just for a little bit, I want to forget. I just want it to be us, please.” Arching upwards, Y/n initiated their kiss, her lips soft and tasting of champagne and something tart, like lemon.

Keanu easily took the control she offered him, letting her bloom against him as she responded to his touch; nothing too much just yet, merely steadying hands on her hips. Tilting her head, Y/n slowly rounded her arms around his neck, standing on the toes of her strappy gold heels as she melted into his broad chest. Her tears went dry and no more came as they continued, his tongue gently passing over hers, one of his hands slowly descending to her lower back. “Are you sure?” He broke their kiss momentarily. Y/n had initiated it, but she was in a less than favorable metal state and Keanu didn’t want to take advantage of her.

“Yeah, please,” she whimpered, trying to close the space between them again.

“Okay,” Keanu breathed, catching Y/n’s swollen lips once again, that time in a slower, more sensual kiss. He poured his breath, his love and maybe even part of his soul into her, already establishing that the night would go by slowly. The world would humor them; stop its chaotic spin for a bit and they’d be privileged with a handful of sacred moments, so they could indulge each other in what was not meant to be.

That night, as Keanu hoisted Y/n up into his arms, the lengthy cut in her dress allowing for her legs to easily tangle around his waist, he thought that Y/n didn’t deserve anything less than being appreciated and attended to, slowly and completely. She deserved his all, and Keanu was going to give it to her.

Upstairs, in his bedroom, where pale yellowish light from the harvest washed the hardwood in a somber pool at their feet, his steady palms guided Y/n so her back would be to him and after a lingered moment, he swept her tresses away from the back of her neck, pressing a warm, chaste, whiskey flavored kiss there, breathing her intoxicating scent as his stocky fingers led the discreet zipper of her dress down her spine.

The shimmery fabric settled around her feet, and her strapless bra followed by her lacy panties were next. Naked with the exception of her heeled sandals, Keanu urged Y/n to sit on his made bed, immediately getting on his knees after he made short work of stripping himself, taking a gentle hold of one ankle. A calloused, yet calmingly familiar touch rose goosebumps on Y/n’s skin as Keanu slowly worked on her shoes, dumping it to the side afterwards.

It was a daunting task, but as his lips sought upwards, from the inner side of her leg, Y/n and Keanu maintained eye contact in the near darkness. Arguably, they were past the point of needing light to maintain their connection, it was always there, it would always be; Keanu was sure that he could find Y/n, even if the world had been plunged into pitch darkness. His open-mouthed, leisurely endearments sent shivers up her spine and electrified her nerves.

Keanu’s touch, the way his body knew Y/n’s was incomparable; he was permanently in tune with what she needed, always eager to put her needs first. In turn, her breaths were shallow and audible, each hitch easily made out in the near silence and her gasps giving him life.

With one hand supporting his weight, Keanu occupied the other by letting it roam appreciatively up her body. His longing erection brushed her silky heat when he finally ducked to reach her neck, the scent of her perfume still clung to her skin, drawing him in, the ends of his overgrown mane tickling her cheek.

"Keanu," Y/n mewled, her warm breath gently blowing her hair, her hands sliding up his bare back, his skin surprisingly cool beneath her tender touch.

"What do you want, baby?" He worked his way down again, his lips circling her breast, his tongue swirling around her hardened nipple, eliciting a needy moan from her ajar lips. With his free hand, Keanu favored her other boob, his gropes gently and slow.

The ball of Y/n's heels skimmed the back of his calves before tangling with his thighs, urging his hips towards hers, “You,” she breathed sharply, “All I want is you.”

All she ever wanted was Keanu.

If after the worst of the worst, he was all that was left, her world would still be complete.

Complying after a minute, Keanu eased into her inch by inch, raising himself slightly off Y/n so he could admire the way her jaw hung slack. Finally nestled deep inside the tightness of her drenched heat, Keanu let a throaty groan leave his lips, low and appreciative. Y/n always fit so well with him; like two puzzle pieces that only made sense if they were put together.

After a prolonged moment of just absorbing the feeling of Y/n enveloping him, Keanu, at an unhurried pace, started rolling his hips, his pace easy for her to keep up with. Clinging to him, with her arms reaching around for his shoulders, Y/n’s erratic breathing matched his and occasionally, her hips would buck to meet his. Their shadows danced on the dimmed walls, and they were so intertwined, it was hard to tell their bodies apart.

Progressively, the heat around them built, swirling with the heavy cloud of emotion, bringing with it, a light sheen to their skin. Time seemed to pass in slow motion, and something about those cherished moments felt vastly different from the ordinary; as if there was more depth to the act, like that much love had never been shared between them. Neither of Y/n nor Keanu wanted it to end, though, eventually, Y/n was gasping raggedly as she came around him, her clenching walls milking his member. Keanu wasn’t too far off, spilling his hot seed deep inside her, his rigid thrusts punctuated by low grunts and their tangled praises.

Untangling was slow and graciously incomplete; Keanu rolled over to his side, one of Y/n’s legs still hooked over his waist. The natural light wasn’t enough to define their features, but still, Y/n thought that she could see Keanu clearly as she cupped the side of his face, the warm center of her palm over his ear; some of his hair laced with her her fingers while the pad of her thumb skimmed the laugh lines near his eyes; the evidence of a live well lived. Their noses barely touched and any closer might constitute their lashes tangling.

“I don’t ever want to be without you,” her whispered admission accompanied glassy eyes and the knowledge that her desires may never be more than fiction.

Still, Keanu was clung to hope that they’d been in the best of graces and things could look up. Or maybe he just didn’t want to see her hurt again. “You will never be without me,” he reassured, bringing her face towards his, so he could seal his promise with a kiss. Keanu hated knowing that his assurances might one day be revealed to be empty, they couldn’t go on like that forever, but a voice in his head, so soft it was almost silent, seemed persistent in the belief that somehow, he would in fact, maintain a part of her life.

Maybe it was right and they just didn’t know it; maybe he’d always be with her.

Til the End of the Night / Ch10: In which the forest’s trials begin (*insert ominous music here*)

Summary: Patton makes some friends. Logan makes complicated arcane machines. Virgil makes a misstep.

Logan was on his fifth “room,” and beginning to wonder just how big this semi-artificial cave system was. The puzzles were getting more complex, but all had to do with drawing magical symbols on things. He was beginning to recognize some of them: this one allowed a machine to draw on a nearby source of magic, this one could teleport an object from one position to another, this one made something translucent so light could pass through it, this one created light like a more powerful version of his glow-bottle. All required magical energy to function. He moved from chamber to chamber, forming arcane circuits and manipulating physics. This was the most he’d enjoyed himself since entering the Imagination. There were only two things dampening his mood: the fact that everything was still magic, and his concern for how Virgil and Patton were getting on without him.

Hopefully, they were still in the clearing, and would have the sense to wait for him there. He didn’t have much faith in their common sense when left to their own devices, though, especially Patton. He would just have to get through the rest of this as quickly as possible so he could find them before they got into too much trouble.

Patton felt much better now that he was making progress. He’d been following his little path for a while now, and it had yet to lead him to a dead end. And this part of the forest was so much nicer than where they’d all been before! Sure, it was a little foggy beyond the edges of the sunlit trail, and a tad quieter than he would have expected, but otherwise it was a beautiful day. He wished his friends were with him to see it, too, but he wouldn’t dwell on that, they would find each other soon enough. Besides, although he knew it wasn’t the same, he seemed to be making more friends out of just about everything around here. At the moment, for example, there was a small hot-pink bird with tiny antlers perched on his shoulder, tugging on his hair as if trying to eat it, which kind of hurt, but it was just so cute he wasn’t going to complain, and some kind of fluffy, soft-looking pastel blue rodent at his feet which wouldn’t let Patton pick it up, but seemed happy to run along next to him and keep him company.

He came to a fork in the path and stopped, rubbing his chin and making a thoughtful pout. “Hmm… Well, either way will probably get me out of here eventually… but I still want to get out as soon as possible so I can find my friends! What do you think, Mr. Fluffles?”

The animal blinked at him, and seemed slightly affronted by the nickname. Still, it looked between the options and then darted over to one of the two branches, looking up at him expectantly.

“Aw, thank you!”

He headed in that direction, confident that his small, furry guide knew what it was talking about. It seemed almost impatient now, darting around his legs as if to urge him forward, and he laughed and tried not to trip over it. The further he walked, the more magical his surroundings became: giant dandelions nearly as tall as he was and mushrooms large enough to sit on, interspersed with bushes covered in brightly colored fruit. On impulse, Patton grabbed a bright yellow berry and popped it in his mouth. It tasted like lemonade, the flavor of the fruit without its sourness, but the next one he tried was closer to a mango. Maybe they were all different? He gathered a few handfuls and filled his cloak’s inner pockets with various colors to snack on as he walked. A voice in the back of his head told him he wouldn’t have been able to do that with Virgil with him, who would have swatted his hands away in case they were poisonous, but he squashed it down- he’d rather have his friends than some berries any day. He offered one to the bird and kept walking.

Roman smiled a little, then sighed with an unreadable mix of emotions, stepping back from his mirror and dispelling the image once again. He was really starting to wish he’d given it split-screen capabilities. It was bad enough that his friends were separated and he had no idea what had happened- that would teach him to listen when Logan told him to go to bed- but the fact that he couldn’t watch them all at once was even worse, because what if something important were to happen when he wasn’t looking? He would hate to miss one of them finally doing something really cool, or… well, he’d rather not follow the other possible train of thought there, for fear of turning into Virgil. That wouldn’t do at all. One of him was quite enough.

He paused for a long moment, listening carefully to make sure the witch wasn’t going to walk in on him, which also wouldn’t do. He hadn’t seen her so far today- she was probably busy enjoying her stupid new castle- but it couldn’t hurt to make sure. Speaking of Virgil, he was the one Roman was most concerned about. Patton didn’t appear to have found any trouble at all, thank goodness, and Logan looked like he was actually having a good time for once now that he’d somehow managed to turn perfectly good magic into a bunch of nerd stuff, but Virgil had been exceptionally tense last time Roman tuned in to him, and was probably having his worst time since coming here. Roman had a surprising amount of sympathy for him: the anxious side clearly thought himself responsible for the safety of the other two, just as Roman felt responsible for putting them in this situation at all, only he didn’t even have any way of knowing they weren’t currently in terrible danger without him. He reached for the mirror to check on him again, and hoped he hadn’t worried himself into shutting down.

Virgil was scanning the forest around him for danger so rapidly he wasn’t sure any of what he saw was actually registering in his brain. It had gotten a little easier to move forward once he resigned himself to the one path he was apparently meant to take, but he was also getting tired after pushing through thick brush for such a long time without finding anything of interest, and almost wished something would happen just to break the painful tension of waiting. New year, new you

Because my post on sustainable living tips was popular (by the standards of someone that has 200 followers and only posts once a year) I decided to do one of tips for healthy living. I suspect its a sad fact that a lot more people are concerned for losing weight this new years than the fact our environment is probably in more need of a life style change. Despite this there is still a positive here, a healthy you is more capable of dealing with the problems the world faces.

As someone that has been cooking nearly every night for years. i have been working on this idea of what i call good for bad, and bad for good. What this means, besides the fact I need to work on that title, is the following. There is good (healthy food) and then there is unhealthy food. The easiest way to cut out the bad, is to not make it not as bad. It sounds a little unoriginal but there is more to it. I will explain this using examples.

- I love fried food, who doesn’t. But its amazing that we fry the worst possible things. Fried broccoli is delicious, blanched then covered in tempura batter and friend. Rather than using nasty potatoes that have little nutritional value, try frying something healthy. Then cover it in parmesan because you only live once.

- I am lucky i enjoy fruit, but a lot of other people don’t. The best way to get it in your diet is to mix it with something healthy, like yogurt. You can make pineapple curry and stir fry. As much as i enjoy it on pizza, the hatred of it is because pizza is already bad for you, a bit of pineapple isn’t going to change that. Though my food philosophy does work in that direction also. But if you make something healthy like a stir fry, and make it easier to eat with fruit, then you are on the right track.

- Chinese food is based on the concepts of yin and yang. The idea is that anything bad has to be balanced out, to make a complete meal. You can see this in a lot of dishes. This is probably another example of good for bad, and bad for good. If you have to eat confectionery, buy the really good stuff (usually hidden in the health food section), the type of sweetner can make a big difference.

- Kitchen sink salads are the new norm. If you have a bunch of ingredients, just make them in to a salad. More often than not it works because greens are pretty neutral flavor wise. Left overs work will in this, which brings me to my next point:

- Make really big side dishes. Roasted vegetables, grilled eggplant, etc. These are great for a salad the next day. So you should always make more of them, so its easier than skipping a meal all together.

- Some people will say, intermittent fasting is also good. This can work well also provided that you are eating enough in general. Google about this if you are interested in the benefits of skipping meals every now and again. I won’t cover it here.

- Whatever works for some people, may not work for you. I have seen the Atkins diet fade away, only to come back as the keto or paleo diet. Which are the same thing. Infact keto means ketosis, which is the process your body goes through when you don’t eat enough carbohydrates, you smell terrible, that is the point. But what needs to be said here, is the inventor of this diet, Mr Atkins actually died of a heart attack. So while some people without a history of heart problems can cope well with eating large amounts of animal products, it doesn’t work for everyone. (This is the same with my diet tips!)

- Be scientific. Just because you read something in a book, as i just said it won’t work for everyone. So see what works best. These are all tips that worked for me, but not everyone will be the same.

- Drink fresh vegetable juice before you go to bed. This is the problem with western diets we eat too much and then sleep it off. What i found works best is actually drinking fresh vegetable juice. Your body performs all kinds of necessary functions while sleeping. It turns out that if given the proper energy, it can also burn fat pretty well. But if you fill up your body with fat before you sleep, it doesn’t do this so well.

- Mediterranean lifestyles. Based on that previous point, having live in Europe, i can not speak highly enough of big lunches and small sandwich based dinners. The countries that practice this are winning on the life expectancy scale. They are also going to have the oldest people alive very soon. Its just healthier even if our routines don’t allow it, to eat a lot during the day, that way you have time to work it off. Our western life styles don’t allow for this, as most people probably need a rest after eating a 3 course meal. But i really do miss the many restaurants that would offer a lunch menu, you could choose from a first and second plate, dessert and coffee for a fixed price. It was cheap, and convenient, and my sleeping routines were much better. Because then i would eat a sandwich at night which made me tired. Its also a lot easier to wake up on an empty stomach.

- The modern diet. While i could say many things about what is wrong with a modern diet, one of the things that has changed the most over the past 200 years is what people do with their time. Previously, everything we did involved physical activity. Now we are actually paid money, to sit at a desk and use our heads without moving. This requires energy, but it doesn’t burn it in the way that we have spent our entire evolutionary history doing. I believe this is actually contributing to the number of obese people. Its not just the diets, its what we do all day to. Sitting at a computer requires a lot of energy, more than moving. But its a very artificial life style. Our bodies are struggling to catch up with this trend.

- Avoid grains, this includes sugar. This is probably a very broad statement, but the more processed a grain is, the more you should avoid it. Don’t eat any flour for a week. Then eat the worst white bread you can find. See what it does to your energy? Its because most of the grains we eat these days aren’t anything like what we used to eat. Gluten free is a big thing now, because it gets people to eat healthier less manufactured grains, and this agrees with everyone, not just people who have an intolerance. Obviously if you are allergic to gluten its one thing, but for most people they feel like they have an allergy to gluten because our bodies are struggling to process this stuff, it becoming more like poison than food. I am sort of allergic to it. But i find eating healthy, organic, grains makes a big difference. Again its just as much to do with the strains we grow, the chemicals and pesticides we use, and finally the processes in which it is converted in to the products we eat that make it so bad rather than people being allergic to it.

- Preservatives. There is starting to be research now that suggests that preservatives in bread are what makes it so difficult for some people to digest. Not only does it not agree with our bodies, it turns out those preservatives get in to our fat stores. In there they preserve our fat also, making it much harder to burn. Some people are more predisposed to this than others. But i suspect this is the same with so many on the shelf products, such as condiments, confectionery, packaged foods. They all contain these same products which make it so hard to digest. I had suspected this theory since the days of trans fat, which is now banned in so many places. It was just caused by corporate greed, because it made products last longer. The catch was, that the fat, once in your system, would never leave or break down. It is part of the very growing body of evidence of what is so bad out our supermarket based diets.

- Eat seasonally. This was in my last posts, but its cheaper. The problem is supermarkets sell the same products all year round. You have to go to a farmers market or a good green grocer to have access to different seasonal goods. Honestly you save a lot of money, and you are exposed to many things you wouldn’t even see elsewhere. you will see that what is in season is usually cheaper at a supermarket, but trust me you are missing out on so much.

- Organic is better, in all cases, its not cheaper, but even just on taste alone it is worth it. The catch is, that i suspect if everyone on this planet was to eat organic, there wouldn’t be enough space on this planet to do so. So if you are lucky enough to be able to buy organic, enjoy it, its a privilege. And by organic when it matters. So if an ingredient is the center of a meal, then buy it organic. If its not, and its going to be mixed with other foods, its not worth it.

- Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but not the easiest for some.Regardless, eat something, even if its coco pops, eventually you will get used to it, and you can start moving on to healthier things. I was a big fan of smoothies, and i would find ways to make them fun, even if it meant a little bit of ice cream. I am also of the belief that protein is best enjoyed in the morning, as it wakes up your metabolism for the rest of the day. So if you really want to, bacon and eggs are actually better enjoyed in the morning.

- Go vegan, even if you lift bro. Surprisingly, up until recently the idea of a vegan body builder was unheard of, now its actually a thing. There is a benefit because, they actually have more energy, and suffer less from muscle pain the following day. This benefit actually outweighs any negatives provided that you do it the right way. Which is more the problem and why it has such a bad reputation, its possible, just so many people don’t do it the right way.

- Variety is healthy. We are always exposed to the same foods, but i really enjoy finding new varieties. Recently i bought a bunch of organic carrots from a farmers market. They were in so many colours and types. They were delicious. 100 years ago, there were almost 1000 types of potatoes farmed. Now there is about 1% of that. Its sad, because the health benefits are lost when you eat the same thing over and over again. But the different varieties, help to give you what you need while keeping it a new experience for your digestive system. This is the same for everything, breads, meats, it doesn’t matter what it is, even a good thing can be bad if you expose yourself to it for long enough.

- Its worth remembering, that we don’t eat vitamins, or anything else. If you paid attention in high school you will remember, the food we eat, actually is used as energy for bacteria in our digestive tract that creates the necessary nutrition for our bodies. So eating protein, doesn’t actually mean that protein will go in to our bodies. After all its protein from a cow for example. We still need to convert that in to a protein that our body uses. Which also requires energy. So while i’m pretty sure it can’t create vitamin c without fresh fruit or vegetables, and vitamin c tables are better than no vitamin c, its more complicated then just that.

- Building on my first point, it takes energy to eat and digest. Part of the reason fast food feels good, is because it triggers a chain reaction between our taste receptors and our brain. It actually gives us pleasure, its sort of like drinking a glass of wine. So in that sense, it is good for you, chocolate is the same, there is lots of things that fall under this category. But the food itself, gives you no energy, in fact in a lot of cases it requires more energy to process than it gives you. However, if you are to drink a green smoothie after a cheeseburger. The negative effects are almost gone, because you give your body the ability to digest this food properly. It also balances out the salt, and the sugar which is so common in fast food. If you don’t, it runs out of energy and just starts storing the fat because its to complicated. This is an over simplification, but the idea is justified.

- This same chain reaction of feel good chemicals, is part of the reason we become addicted to unhealthy foods. In terms of how your brain stores such information. Water is really healthy, but if you drink soft drink, the taste is designed to really go to work on your taste buds. So your mind will remember a bottle of coke better than it will remember water. This is how people become addicted to food, because pretty soon thirsty = coke. Because its been influenced by a product that you would have no craving for otherwise (as it will actually make you more thirsty due to the large amount of sugar). So much of the globalized food products we eat do this. The salt in chips. The sugar in sweets. The booze in beer (which when you think about it, taste wise alcohol is anything but a tasty experience) obviously there is more going on there than taste alone.

- Balance. Not just in every aspect of your life, but what we eat needs to be balanced. If you have indigestion, poor bowl movements, just about anything that causes you discomfort. We all seem to be aware that this is caused by bad eating habits. But there is probably something missing in your diet. If you get indigestion, eat a lot more greens. All of our bodily functions have these “compensators”. If you experience something, don’t just accept it as a passing thing. Actually google what can be done to compensate it. Because i am convinced these things happen for a reason. Its the start of what will eventually become a sickness, a cold or a short life expectancy, etc. If we ignore this, then eventually it will be a problem.

- Antioxidants. building on that previous point. When you are sick, i don’t believe chicken soup helps. Fresh vegetable juice, sauteed kale, this actually works. Since i started being a little more scientific about my diet, i just don’t get sick, even when sick people are around me. Your body needs energy, the right kind of energy. Plants is our biggest alley in the struggle to be healthy.

- Green is better. We can see more shades of green than any other colour. This is due to our evolutionary history, as we needed to differentiate between shades of greens to spot predators in every part of nature (trees, grass, etc). But it also an example of why greens are an importance part of our diet, because it where we spent most of evolutionary history, around plants. But colour is also important. Not in food coloring, but in the plants we eat. Different colours mean different things. So more colours the better. Eating apples is good. But eating apples in every colour is better because they all have their own benefits. While one may be better for your weight (low GI red ones), another may be better for aging slower (green granny smiths for example).

- Exercise isn’t always good for you. The stereo types of jocks being stupid are exaggerated, but there is evidence to suggest that it does deprive your mind of vital blood. Like wise a lazy life style can affect your blood flow and have the same consequence. I have been of the mind set that if you don’t enjoy exercise, you may actually fall in to this category, but there is a reason for it, so you should actually address that reason. It has a lot of health benefits, and the right exercise can release endorphins. I’m sure you've heard this all before. At the same time, it can make things like depression and social anxiety worse. In fact it can cause mental illness problems, it can destroy the effects of some medications, it can make you more aggressive, overly confident. It also has long term health problems such as bone and joint problems, permanent damage caused by injuries and other complications. So its not essential to go to the gym, but that doesn’t mean you get off that easy.

- See everything as exercise. Its that simple, especially if you fall in the category of the reward doesn’t make it worth while. Park your car further away so that you have to walk. Carry as many of the groceries as you can. Turn everything that you do in to a way to stay fit which is part of what i do. There are so many opportunities to do this. Walk faster. Don’t use a trolley. Run with your dog instead of throwing a ball. Stand while you are working on something. Do easy exercise when you have a free moment. Use the stairs. Just about anything. All sports have a so called honey moon moment. This si when you notice the most gains. However one you past this period, gains can be pretty slow. If you do it this way, you never leave the honey moon period as its always new, its always a challenge. The only catch is you won’t get the same results as going to the gym, but i would wager you are actually healthier.

- Bigger isn’t always better. You will find a lot of really big gym people would struggle with repetitive tasks. People who are big, can actually be more healthy than you are because they have to carry a lot of extra weight. There are people I know who weigh more than me, but swim a lot faster than me. There is no universal rule to what is healthy, so don’t buy in to what the media sells you.

- The best way to stay fit, for me any way, is water aerobics. Annoying that it involves getting yourself to a pool. But you can do so many types of exerciser that you can’t do any other way. You have 360 degrees of movement, so you can exercise muscles in ways you can’t out of the water. I just find its the best way to grow mass on all sides, rather than in the most common places which is what happens at the gym.

- Doctors that work in this field will tell you, your bowl movements give you all the information you need for your health. while this is a public social media post i will spare you all the details. But our society during the victorian years made anything associated with being human as “gross”. Its still not very different unless you are talking about toilet humor, which is childish but it makes an interesting point that its “ok” to ridicule something we all do. This need to see our selves as anything but animals, that human is godly when compared to animals. It has pushed us away from vital functions that actually serve the very important purpose of keeping us alive. That doesn’t mean you should shout about it from the roof tops. But remember our bodily functions keep us alive, don’t be ashamed of them. We all have them. Because this shame has actually probably done more to hurt us than to make us healthy. Don’t let society do that to you.

- This doesn’t just apply to your bodily functions, but your body as a whole. While diversity is good, it sort of makes our differences in to a commodity (the current diversity trend resembles that more than anything else).
