Part 4
Danny took to the Spanish Language like a fish to water, learning it's most basic form in three days, and every little nuance about it in another four.
Alejandro had been kind enough to let him stay with them and their family for the week. They were very accommodating and understanding as he learned their language and culture. He enjoyed trading knowledge with them, and he hoped they did, too.
He messaged Jazz every morning and every night. Long messages about what he did during the day. Just before lights out, he spent an hour or so going into more depth in his journal, going so far as to draw pictures from memory so that he wouldn't forget.
Alejandro's little sister, Maria, helped him with his art. She was amazing at it and he was honored to be taught by her.
Their father, Antonio, taught him about their food culture, teach him how to cook simple meals. He'd even been allowed to help with making lunch on days four and five!
Their grandmother, Abuela Maya, taught him their myths and stories, about how to stay safe and what to look out for. He didn't tell any of them, but he was pretty sure she clocked his ghostlyness the second she laid eyes on him.
Danny was getting anxious, staying in one place for so long, and he knew Alejandro and their family were picking up on it. He wanted to stay, but the feeling of being watched was starting to creep up on him.
Outside and down the street a little at the playground is where Alejandro found him.
"It's been fun having you here, Danny," they said.
"I've had fun staying here."
"But you're anxious to leave."
He paused. He didn't want to offend, but, "Yeah."
"Lo entiendo. A guy like you has a hard time staying still." They leaned back, laying on the grass with their hands behind their head like a pillow. A sigh. "I wish I could go with you."
Danny laid down, too. "Me, too."
"But I can't."
"I know." He had a feeling this was going to be a recurring theme.
Alejandro continued as though he hadn't spoken. Almost seeming to talk themself out of leaving with him, reasoning against leaving. "I have to stay to help take care of Abuela Maya and Maria. Papá es getting sick; he refuses to stay down, ¿sabes? Won't listen to his body, to his kids." A beat. Two. "Mamá died the same way, when Maria was four. She doesn't remember her, but I do. I miss her."
Danny didn't have words of comfort to share with his friend. What was there to say that hadn't already been said.
Alejandro chuckled humorlessly. "Sorry for dumping that on you."
"It's okay." And it was. Danny understood the need to say something. "My sister's been studying psychology since before I can remember. She says that talking is healthy."
"You have a ¿hermana?"
"Yeah. Su nombre es Jazz. She's the smartest person I know."
"Smarter than me?"
The humor was back. "Smarter than Abuela Maya."
Alejandro gasped in fake indignation. "You don't mean that!"
Danny shook his head. "I do."
They clicked their tongue. "Now I have to meet her. She gonna meet you somewhere so you can travel together?"
Danny shook his head with a small smile. "Can't. Circumstances won't let me go back, nor will they let her join me."
"Lo siento, man, that must be rough."
He shrugged. "Nothing either of us can do about it."
"Do you mind if I ask what's what?"
Danny paused. There couldn't be a lot of harm in telling Alejandro at least a little bit, right? But then, he hadn't even contacted Tucker or Sam yet, having muted their conversations for the time being until he worked up the courage to call them.
He sighed. "There's a secret I've been hiding from my parents for a bout a year now. And because of what's been happening state-side, it's not safe for me there anymore."
Alejandro was quiet for a long minute. "At least you have your sister."
"Yeah. At least I have her."
The two lapsed back into a comfortable quiet, watching the clouds until the sun hovered right over them and they had to look away.
"What's your plan now?"
Danny thought for a minute. What was his plan? He could probably meet with Dani somewhere for a bit before they ultimately parted ways again. She was still in Guatemala, according to her last message, and would be staying the week before moving on. They'd have to plan soon if they wanted to meet up.
"A cousin of mine," he said, "is in Guatemala right now, so I'll probably head her way."
"Maldita sea, your family must be rollin' in it to b able to travel so much!"
He looked away, bashful. "Not really. Jazz gave me what she had so I could leave the country, but that won't last, and my cousin won't accept any money she doesn't earn on her own. Not even the child support!"
"Your cousin has a child? And she's traveling with it?"
"No, I'm- she is the child."
"Then why is she getting child support if she's the child?"
"It's being sent to me, legally, but I put it all in an account for her to access when she wants or needs it."
The air turned heavy for a moment. Between one breath and the next, it was light again. "It's good that you guys have a good relationship. How old is she?"
"Yeah. She's a few years younger than me."
"Oh," was the stilted response.
Danny didn't like the heaviness the silence had taken again. "You ever seen a superhero?"
"Like the ones on T.V?"
"Yeah,"
"Not in person, no. But I've always wondered what it'd be like to meet one. Or, hell, even be one."
Danny had to scoff. "It's not all it's cracked up to be."
"You ever meet any?"
"No."
"Hm." A beat. Two. Three. "You should head down to Linares next. It's where Abuela Maya's from."
"Really?"
"Yeah. You might find some of the answers you're looking for there."
Danny thought about it for a moment. "Okay. Sounds like a plan."
"Good. No give me your phone number so that we can keep in touch."
"What?"
"I can't leave, but I'm not gonna miss out on the world because of that. I want pictures and messages and-" They cut off and pulled Danny into a hug. "You're the closest friend I've had in a while, 'nny. Don't forget about me, okay?"
The hug was awkward, laying down as they were, but he wrapped his arms around them all the same. "I wouldn't dream of it, 'dro."

Had her mother ever felt this way, watching a little Helaena play with her toys and insects? Had Queen Alicent experienced this daily wonder of seeing your children discover the world and themselves, the feeling of being reborn by reliving your childhood through them? This fascination of witnessing how they look at things with brand new eyes, unblemished by the world? The utter, golden joy of seeing them at play ruthlessly warming your heart like dragonfire? Perhaps all mothers wonder the same thing when they look at their daughters, she mused. Perhaps they all tremble in fear for their futures and all the things from which they could not protect them, too.
Helaena hoped, at least, to protect Jaehaera from the crown that would inevitably come to burden her twin one day. The courtesy that Alicent had denied her. The child leaned into her caresses – and for the span of that moment, the mother became a little girl again, free of nightmares and terrors. Her hair was soft to the touch, fragrant and sweet to the nose when she sniffed it. Jaehaera’s eyes widened and lit up in excitement – and all Helaena could do was mirror her expression and store that image safely within a cozy corner of her soul.
“Shhh… darling”, cooed Helaena, picking her up and combing her hair with her fingers. “We need to get you into your riding clothes. Remember?”, she added, her words occasionally cut by a gentle laughter of sheer delight and amusement at the girl’s hurry. Kissing her temple to soothe her down, the princess ordered the maid to fetch them the appropriate attire, then picked up a wooden toy from Jaehaera’s table as they waited. Its shape displayed a crowned man riding a dragon. How fitting! “Do you want to bring the conqueror with us?”, she teased with a childlike voice, bouncing her on her arms.
Tumblr media
She did not like being separated from Jaehaerys. Not only because she missed her twin brother whenever he was taken to see his father, but also because she was never asked to join them. Her brother was heir, not her, and thus she was worthless in the eyes of the men around her. The only value in life she would possess as a woman grown, was to be married politically preferable. No doubt her father would find a match to rid himself of her rather sooner than later, if he even remembered he had sired a daughter.
Watching closely as her brother hesitantly left, Haera's eyes lingered on his form until the door closed and she returned her attention back to her play. All the twins' wooden toys were neatly lined up in a row sorted by the kind of animal they were. Other children would not have considered this play, but this was what Jaehaera preferred. The imaginative part happened solely inside of her head - which was perhaps best, given the scenarios she dreamed up were quite often violent and cruel. Her favorite game was to play the conquest of Aegon, with all the war and bloodshed it entailed.
When her mother's voice rose, Haera looked up and saw her approach. Warmth flooded her chest at the gentle touch and the child leaned into it, before eagerly nodding immediately. She loved flying and was quite impatient for Morghul to grow, so she could ride her own mount. "Yes", she said and got to her feet, immediately ready to depart. It was not often that one of her family members took her flying and so the offer was easily accepted. Dreamfyre was a gentle giant, who seemed to be pleased whenever the children were around her. "Come, mama", Haera urged, tugging at her mother's sleeve to make her rise as well.

what do you think about michaels mothers? did you draw them? \i remember one of them in your comic about boyf's problems in their relationship, but what about other?\, or you see his family in different way?. i have sooooo many thoughts about them \even write some kind of their past and the story about their meeting, their habits and tastes etc\, want to know what do you think about it!
grips you by the shoulders and shakes you violently because yes yes oh please yes I have many so many thoughts about Michael's mothers (this is gonna be long lol)
here they are! (rough sketches but eh whatever)
Tumblr media
Rosanne is Michael's biological mother. She had him kind of young, just out of college. And the father, who was a long-term boyfriend, didn't exactly bother to stick around.
Eloise is legally Michael's step-mother but is more importantly the mother who stepped up; Eloise and Rosanne met in high school and were instant BFFs. And when Eloise heard the news about Rosanne's baby and a recently revealed-to-be deadbeat father, holy shit did she feel bad since she'd basically introduced the two.
But eventually Eloise said "yeah fuck that guy, your kid needs a dad? I'll be his dad." Which started as just a joke between friends who then moved in together figuring it'd be easier to juggle work and a baby and Eloise's recent acceptance into med school.
Obviously things weren't easy easy, but having your best friend to lean on and have your back is pretty cool. Until one day you start realizing that you might actually have feelings for her but that's horrendously inconvenient right now so you try to ignore it but soon you're making jokes like "what if we got married for tax reasons lol? Wouldn't it be funny if we were legally unionized so that if something happened to one of us the state and our families wouldn't be fighting over our assets and Michael lmao?"
Well the jokes stopped being jokes, and they got married at a courthouse witnessed by a handful of friends and photographed by a four year old Michael with a disposable camera.
Everything was obviously not perfect; both Eloise and Rosanne were now running with some very demanding jobs, leaving less attention for Michael, which sucked for everyone involved.
And remember that birthday of Michael's everyone but Jeremy forgot? Yeah his moms weren't exempt from that. It was an honest mistake and they both felt horrible, but it severed their relationship with him for quite a few years. Even after Rosanne was able to quit her job so she could be home more, Michael was in high school before things started improving at all.
By the time the events of Be More Chill roll around, their relationship is definitely better. (Minus the fights about this new marijuana habit and you are sixteen why the hell do you think you want a tattoo) He still doesn't tell them everything. (His fight with Jeremy was mostly his burden up until Jeremy was hospitalized.)
But at the end of the end of the day, Rosanne and Eloise love each other, they love their son Michael and his friend Jeremy that they think of as a second son. They're always going to be in Michael's life. And despite everyone's shortcomings and all the things that could have been different, Michael still thinks they're the best moms he could have asked for.
Tumblr media
Eloise is a neurobiologist. Rosanne prefers tea to coffee. She also likes medical dramas but doesn't watch them with Eloise because she won't shut up about inaccurate practices. Rosanne likes gardening. Both of their cars are 90% maintained by Michael (at his insistence.) Everyone in that house is trilingual to some degree. All the Mells are smarter than you. Just accept it.
idk Michael and his moms having a good relationship is so important to me. I have enough characters with crappy familial situations I didn't want to do that to him too

I hadn't actively seen a lick of any Sonic-related media in my life until a week ago, when my roommate made me watch the first Sonic movie, then forced me to watch 2 so I could watch 3 in theaters with her and a friend of ours. Never played a game, never watched anyone play it beyond the three (3) Game Grumps clips that I saw here on tumblr. I only knew the characters from memes and fandom art my mutuals sometimes reblogged.
Saw all three films in a week, and I'm obsessed.
Which game do I start with? Or should I just start at the beginning and go through 'em all?

Everything on Their Christmas Lists
I accidentally turned a single fic "Make The Yuletide Gay" into a trilogy (See also: "Two Losers at a Christmas Party") and I have finally brought that trilogy to a close. Almost 2/3s of the way into January, 2024. This story is set in 2022. I am so tired.
I'm not gonna stop, though! I already have my Sphere Valentine's Day fic planned, and I still might do a New Years Eve fic (based on this artwork by @rollingaroundin-bread ) before that. And those are just my holiday-themed fics, I have so many more ideas and no plans on stopping anytime soon.
Enjoy!
Hunter woke up on Christmas morning and was stunned to find Sara was not already awake and dressed but also wearing the most normal outfit Hunter had ever seen her wear. No leggings with wild patterns, no neon clothes, and no sports bra over her shirt. She wasn’t even wearing one of her many ugly Christmas sweaters.
She was just sporting black jeans and a dark red turtleneck sweater.
“You’re wearing that?” Hunter asked skeptically.
“Yeah, I want to make a good impression on your family.”
“It just doesn’t look like you,” Hunter pointed out.
“Hmm. I’ll jazz it up with some fun jewelry.” Sara hopped up and began to sort through her earring collection. A few moments later she triumphantly held up two large, dangly Christmas tree earrings.
“Very you,” Hunter said, nodding approvingly. “Would you like to borrow one of my necklaces?”
“What do you have in mind?”
Hunter slid out of bed slowly and crossed to her jewelry box, selecting a silver necklace with an emerald that would kind of match the earrings.
Sara’s eyes widened and she held the necklace reverently. “Did you get this off a corpse?”
“No, I only take dresses. I got this from my mother. So, uh, I guess I did get it off a corpse…” Hunter coughed and turned her focus to unclasping the necklace.
Sara hesitated and pulled away.
“You’d let me wear your mother’s necklace?”
“Yeah, I think my mother would want you to wear it. And look,” Hunter lifted a silver pocket watch off of her bedside table. “This was my father’s, and I was planning on wearing it today. If you wear the necklace, a part of both my parents will be celebrating with us.”
Sara blinked back tears- the way Hunter talked about her family was so full of love, it was beautiful. “I’d be honored to wear it.”
Hunter draped the necklace around Sara’s neck, holding back tears herself. “It looks good on you.”
Hunter swiped at her eyes and turned away. “I’m going to go shower real quick.”
“Alright, Hun. I’ll microwave breakfast.” Sara could see that Hunter was also trying not to cry and decided to put all of her energy into making the rest of this morning as easy and happy as it could be.
For Hunter’s festive Christmas outfit, she selected a black pinstripe pantsuit, accented with the pocket watch and a silly Christmas tie. She’d gotten the suit for funerals and the tie as a gag gift from Marian last year, so they were an unlikely pair, but it somehow worked. Just like Hunter and Sara.
When she stepped out of the bedroom in her suit, Sara whistled.
“Wow, I mean… Wow.”
Hunter grew flustered. “I’ve been told I should wear pants more.”
Sara answered immediately, “I don’t care how much or how little you wear- you’re always irresistible to me.”
Hunter would have ditched the suit then and there if they weren’t on a strict schedule.
“We should be going.”
“I called a car, and we can eat on the way,” Sara said, handing Hunter a microwaved breakfast sandwich.
“You thought of everything,” Hunter said, impressed.
“Well, this is the first Christmas I’ve spent with anyone in a while, so I wanted it to be perfect.”
Hunter grabbed Sara’s hand with the hand that wasn’t holding her breakfast sandwich. “It will be. My family is going to love you.”
Sara smiled but kept quiet, feeling jittery. She knew that whatever happened wouldn’t change Hunter’s opinion of her, but she really, really wanted this to go right.
In the car on the ride over, Hunter gave Sara the SparkNotes of her family.
“So, my Uncle Shaun is my dad’s brother, he’s married to my Aunt Deidre, everyone calls her Dee, and they have three kids, Marian, Morgan, and Maddox. My dad’s side of the family was really into the gender neutral names. ‘Cause gender is made up and stuff.”
Sara had never wanted to be part of a family more.
“Marian's a year younger than me, Morgan is 24 and Maddox is 19.”
“So you're the oldest?”
“On dad's side of the family, yeah. I'm squarely in the middle on my mom's side but I don't see them as much.”
“Oh, is everything okay with them?”
“Yeah, they just mostly live on the other side of the country. But maybe in the new year…”
“You should,” Sara encouraged.
“Maybe. It's hard to schedule a vacation around the fragility of human life.”
“Makes sense. But it's worth trying, right?”
“Right.”
The car pulled up to a well-lit house, decked out in green and red string lights and inflatable snowmen. It wasn't cold enough for real snowmen yet, it usually didn't snow around here until January.
“Ready?” Hunter asked, seeing the nerves on Sara's face.
“I'm ready. The way you talk about them, I'm sure I'll be just fine.”
Hunter nodded, squeezing Sara's hand real quick before ringing the doorbell.
A tall, muscular guy with a buzzcut and the same dark eyes as Hunter answered the door and lit up when he saw them. “You're wearing the tie I got you!”
“It seemed appropriate. I saw Petunia the other day, she says hello.”
“Petunia?”
“You met her when she delivered those sunflowers, to the Townsend funeral?”
“Oh, yeah. Tell her hi for me, I guess.”
“Do you work at the funeral home too?” Sara asked, eyes wide.
“Sort of? I do the landscaping for the cemetery. It's only part time though, I also do private gigs. Here,” Marian pulled his wallet out of his sweatpants’ pocket and handed Sara a business card.
Hunter didn't know what she'd done to make it so her friend group consisted entirely of people who had their own business cards.
“Impressive,” Sara said earnestly, “I have my own business too. I can get you a card later but if you look up SaraPenaPartyForHire online you'll get the gist. Hunter's on the payroll.”
“Oh she is?” Marian asked, raising an eyebrow. “Never thought I'd hear about Hunter willingly going to parties.”
“Willing is a stretch,” Hunter mumbled.
“I would kill to see that,” Marian said.
“I'll keep that in mind,” Sara said, tucking the business card into her jeans.
“Hunter, is that you?” A woman called from the living room.
“I'm here, Aunt Dee! And I brought someone very special!”
“Bring her in here,” Aunt Dee said, “we're all anxious to meet this mystery girl.”
It was so refreshing for Sara, to hear Hunter's family so casual and supportive of queerness.
Hunter grabbed Sara’s hand and pulled her into the living room. Then she gestured as if she was doing show and tell. “This is Sara.”
“Are you two official yet?” One of the cousins asked. She seemed slightly older than the other girl, so Sara guessed she was Morgan.
“Yes, Morgan. We live together,” Hunter said, already seeming a little impatient with the questions.
Morgan smirked. “And did you become official before or after you moved in together?”
Hunter reddened.
“...After.”
“I knew it. You're just like my fanfics.”
Hunter rolled her eyes, but Sara couldn't help laughing. “It's nice to meet you all.”
“Not everything is a trope, Morgan.”
“You're literally sunshine and moon coded,” Morgan said.
Sara beamed.
“You think I'm sunshine-coded? That's so nice. Although, I do prefer the moon.” She rubbed her thumb over Hunter's hand and Hunter grew even more flustered.
“Simp,” Maddox accused.
“Yeet,” Hunter shot back.
“That is not how you use the word yeet.” It was clear they'd had this argument before.
While Hunter and Maddox squabbled over slang, Sara was waved over by Hunter's aunt and uncle.
“It's nice to meet you, young lady,” Uncle Shaun said.
“The pleasure is all mine, really. Thank you for letting me crash your Christmas.”
“Nonsense, if Hunter loves you, you're part of the family,” Aunt Dee said.
Sara pinched herself in case she was still dreaming.
“That means a lot to me.”
“It means a lot to us to see Hunter this happy. It's been a long time,” Shaun said, a sad smile tugging at his lips.
He cleared his throat before he could dwell on the people who were missing from their Christmas.
“Well, we should get started, these presents aren't going to unwrap themselves. If you children are done catching hands, the rest of us are ready for gifts.”
The one thing Hunter and Maddox could agree on was that Shaun used slang more egregiously than either of them.
Hunter came to sit down next to Sara, looking a little nervous herself now. Sara couldn't for the life of her figure out why Hunter was nervous, but the anxious look was adorable on her.
Sara leaned back and watched the others unwrap gifts, just glad to be there. They were all so happy, and they clearly loved each other so much. Unconditionally.
She was watching Morgan unwrap a fancy new journal when Hunter tapped her on the shoulder.
“I got you something.”
“Oh! I left your present at home,” Sara said guiltily.
“It's okay. Here,” Hunter pressed a small satiny box into Sara's hand.
Sara's eyes widened as she opened it, they'd only been dating for about a month so she definitely hadn't expected jewelry for Christmas. The box held a beautiful rose gold locket that was better than anything Sara could have ever asked for.
“Look inside,” Hunter urged.
She struggled a moment before being able to open a locket. One side held a picture of her, from the night they had met. The other photo was a selfie of Sara and Hunter together on their second (third?) date, when Sara had tried to teach Hunter some dance moves.
“It's perfect,” Sara said. “My gift isn't as good as this.”
Hunter laughed. “That's okay, Sara. All I really wanted was to spend Christmas with you.”
Sara wrapped an arm around Hunter. “Well that I can manage.”
Aunt Dee cleared her throat. “It's time for stockings.”
She passed stockings to all of her kids and then headed over to Hunter and Sara.
“Sorry, yours is kind of generic, Sara. I didn't know what you liked.” Aunt Dee held out two stockings.
“Oh, you didn't have to get me anything.”
“Well, I did,” Dee said with a laugh.
Sara felt her face grow warm as she took the stocking, overwhelmed with gratitude.
It was just candy and a few hair scrunchies, but it was everything to Sara. She was part of this family now. They wanted her to be here. It was… Nice. It was really nice.
After trading her Snickers bar for Maddox's Tic Tacs, she leaned back and wrapped her arm around Hunter once more.
“I think I got everything I wanted,” Sara said in a whisper.
“Me too.”
