Honestly the implications for the Byers family dynamics if Jonathan gets taken to the UD instead of Will are staggering.
#I’m assuming an AU where he’s saved from the UD#obviously the dynamics would change in a very very sad way if he died#but will getting taken to the UD and being sick/possessed afterwards#kind of prolongs and exaggerates a pre-existing dynamic in the family#where will is the primary object of concern and Jonathan is the provisional second parent#but if Jonathan’s the one to basically acquire a long-term if not permanent disability in a really traumatic way#(which is in broad strokes what happens to will)#just as will is becoming older and more independent#a lot more has to change#and I think they would all feel so weird about it!#also if Jonathan’s too sick to work#or people don’t want to hire him because of the weirdness around his disappearance#that has more material consequences#idk it makes me think of Joan of Arcadia#where the star athlete older brother is paralyzed in a car accident#and the younger kids#(a slightly dirtbag-ish average teen girl and a nerdy teen boy)#are like yeah remember when our mild teen brattiness and social ineptitude were this family’s biggest problems?#guess no one is too concerned about that now!#that said will is still not allowed to ride his bike at night
