So I was thinking about the Odyssey and the Iliad, as usual, and something interesting occurred to me.
Other people have observed some possible references to the Iliad during the final arc, such as Katsuki dying like Patroclus, resulting in Izuku dealing with a very Achilles-esque rage. (Obviously, with a different outcome.)
And then there's the deliberate choice of the operation's name:

But it made me wonder... are there references to the Odyssey, too?
Well, yes. Consider the story of Calypso.
She's a woman imprisoned on an island...
Tumblr media
...who forces the hero apart from his loved ones...
Tumblr media
...wanting the hero to remain and be her lover...
Tumblr media
...but he leaves at last, journeying across the sea...
Tumblr media
...because ultimately, he belongs elsewhere.

I think it's interesting that Will, who lost his surrogate daughter, ended up marrying a woman who's son looks quite a bit like that daughter

house md has a noticeable problem with house's own philosophy and the network tv episodic story structure. the show has several patients with disabilities, neurodivergencies, differences that are socially isolating, etc., but there are also several episodes where these end up being symptoms of the patient's underlying problems, rather than being untreatable: in the socratic method, lucy is schizophrenic, except she isn't, it's a symptom of her wilson's disease. in heavy, jessica is "obese" (i use that term PURELY because the show does) except she isn't, it's a symptom of her cushing's. in merry little christmas, abigail has dwarfism, except she doesn't because it's actually a symptom of her langerhans. in remorse, valerie is a psychopath except she isn't because she has wilson's disease.
(there may be more, but these came to mind right away. and yes, even though lucy and valerie had the same underlying condition, i'm listing them both because their neurological presentations were different)
and then in line in the sand, house gives this speech about disability that seems quite progressive for its era:
HOUSE: See, skinny, socially-privileged white people get to draw this neat little circle and everyone inside the circle is normal—and everyone outside the circle should be beaten, broken and reset, so they can be brought into the circle. Failing that, they should be institutionalized, or worse, pitied.
i find it interesting to contrast this character beat with the way the show handles being different. this has (rightfully) been critiqued to hell and back, but in some episodes, the plot cannot be "resolved" until the character's differences are eradicated, to create the impression that they're "all better" and the team has successfully done their job. but in doing so, the show directly contradicts house's own philosophy. which i find fascinating.

Rick Riordan and I may have accidentally shared a similar thought process around the same time as each other. Let me explain:
Back when I was in Grade 2 (so around 2013 or so), I started writing a series of fantasy stories. I'll give them their own post if anyone wants to hear about them. My dad still wants to try and publish them one day (even though I don't think they were written very well). Anyways, I started writing a bunch of stories about dragons where I made nearly 10+ books. I had a bunch of characters, and one of the stranger choices I made was having Mother Nature and Father Time be a couple.
At around that same period of time, Rick Riordan was writing the Heroes of Olympus with Gaia (aka Mother Nature) as the main villain. And in his prior series, he had Kronos (God of Time) as the main villain. See where I'm going with this? Both our stories had a Father Time figure and a mother nature figure, and they were both written at around the same time. I don't think I had even read Percy Jackson at that time, either. So it's just a very strange and funny coincidence. But I felt like sharing it, since I remembered this only today while I was in school.

also i can't even pinpoint one thing i really like - like it's all different reasons lmao
prince of tennis - fucking unintentionally hilarious movie, it's a trip and it's a musical lmao.
the first slam dunk - visually stunning movie which engrosses you in the basketball game.
haikyuu the dumpster battle - banging soundtrack, action that keeps you watching the game for the results.
blue lock - a really interesting and darker twist on sports anime, not afraid too have a lot of asshole main characters.

please i love you i'm begging you bring back suspension of disbelief bring back trusting the audience like. i cannot handle any more dialogue that sounds like a legal document. "hello, i am here to talk to you about the incident from a few minutes ago, because i feel you might be unwell, and i am invested in your personal wellbeing." "thank you, i am unwell because the incident was hurtful to me due to my childhood, which was bad." I CANT!!!!
do you know how many people are mad that authors use "growled" as a word for "said"? it's just poetics! they do not literally mean "growled," it's just a common replacement for "said with force but in a low tone." it's normal! do you hear me!! help me i love you please let me out of here!!!

Sometimes I’m reminded that in universe Chilchuck is an actually influential figure who like. Made huge advancements for his people and community. Like as in gave them rights and protections. And who is widely known by half-foots because of that. Like. He’s not just some guy.
Idk For some reason that just makes his role in canon really funny to me. Like this older, extremely important and accomplished figure is just willingly putting himself thru it for the sake of this random autistic 26 year old.

I'm getting so sick of major female characters in historical media being incredibly feisty, outspoken and public defenders of women's rights with little to no realistic repercussions. Yes it feels like pandering, yes it's unrealistic and takes me out of the story, yes the dialogue almost always rings false - but beyond all that I think it does such a disservice to the women who lived during those periods. I'm not embarrassed of the women in history who didn't use every chance they had to Stick It To The Man. I'm not ashamed of women who were resigned to or enjoyed their lot in life. They weren't letting the side down by not having and representing modern gender ideals. It says a lot about how you view average ordinary women if the idea of one of your main characters behaving like one makes them seem lame and uninteresting to you.

this is a poster i made for my call to action assignment in humanities! it's a bunch of basic and easy stretches for people who sit and work at a desk all day (me)
the idea is that you'd put the poster up above ur desk and do the stretches every 30 minutes or so,, the whole routine won't take more than about 6 minutes to complete and when done regularly it can prevent wrist, shoulder, neck and back pain! :)
all these stretches can be done while sitting (although i HIGHLY recommend you stand up and move around while taking a break from working)
you can get a free digital copy of this poster here on my gumroad!
and you can order a print/poster here from my inprnt!
