how do red and EB talk to each other?

They normally talk through an interpreter. Someone [frequently Martyn] will repeat what EB says out loud for Red to hear, and sign [or do the eye-contact replies] for Red.

If they don't have an interpreter, Red can take the crown off to try and communicate, but that means everything said goes through Red's demon, and the demon is paranoid and unkind, and often twists words and meanings -- among other side effects. He does everything he can to keep the crown on.
