something that The Arcana supporters forget (or choose to ignore) is the fact that for a long, long time the game did not have the mini-game or the log-in rewards for coins. Players depended only on the gambling of the WoF or paying absurd amounts of money for the new chapters.

the devs went from playing the victims who were unable of controlling prices to (as spoken of in the link from mysticmicrotransactions) saying the making of the game (a pathetic little app game backed by a studio and a kickstarter) justifies the prices

they also gave people false hope about maybe changing the prices in the future, all while bleeding money from loyal players in “micro” transactions

the arcana literally added a $99.99 coins option on their latest update

in case it hasn’t sunk in yet: you can pay a hundred dollars upfront to the arcana, and you still will not have access to the whole game

So it's saying if you were running Google ads, you would have to pay this much for your traffic from those keywords (based on their estimates) Martinez You can't take those projections seriously. They're nice to know about but the advertisers decide what they are willing to spend. Maybe your site is being rejected by advertisers even though you're in the network. Maybe you're using the wrong kind of ad units. The discrepancy between projection and reality can be due to many things. We have sites in our portfolio that double, sometimes triple their earnings in December and January over the rest of the year. We have sites that earn most of their money in the spring months. It takes time to figure out what works for you.

You weren’t using a proven content framework

It’s not the best post ever published on the topic

Granted, it’s not your fault. Until today, chances are no one ever told you about any of those requirements. You thought you just had to write interesting stuff and publish it.

No, grasshopper. No.

The truth is, having good ideas and powerful words isn’t enough. You have to create the best content ever published on blog topics lots of people are interested in learning more about. And that brings us to the three levels of content creation:

You know what blog content is popular in your niche, and you write exclusively about those topics

You’ve mastered frameworks proven to make your content more popular (list post, how to post, etc.)

Your content delivers more value to the reader than any other post published on that topic

You’re probably thinking, “Geez. That sounds hard.” And you’re right, it is.

I personally spent about three years honing my skills by writing for other sites before I started my own blog. It doesn’t have to take that long — I’m just a perfectionist, so I wanted to learn from the best people in my space.

It worked, though. Nowadays, my posts get millions and millions of visitors, not because I know some special “secret,” but because I’m really good at what I do.

Blogging is really no different than anything else. The more of a bad ass you are, the easier it is for you to make money online.

So you want to know how to make money blogging?

Become a badass writer.

Then the next step is to…

3. Choose a Traffic Source (Google Search or Facebook)

When you’re a newbie, getting traffic is confusing.

Should you focus on optimizing your keywords? Growing your Facebook page? Leaving comments on blogs? Answering questions on Quora? Being active in Facebook groups? Creating videos for your YouTube channel? Starting a popular podcast?

And so on.

There are a gazillion traffic tactics out there. Everybody says theirs is the best.

But here’s the data:

Pretty much all the traffic for written content comes from either Google or Facebook. The rest of traffic sources combined don’t even come close to competing with those two Goliaths.

So, how do you get them to send you a bunch of traffic?

One option is you can pay for it. They like that.

But chances are, you’re reading about how to make money blogging because you don’t want to pay for traffic. You want it for free, right?

Well, imagine this:

There’s an arena where all the bloggers in your space go to compete for traffic. The number of other challengers you defeat determines the amount of traffic you receive.

In other words, getting traffic is a sport.

There are winners, and there are losers

To be good, you have to train

You need to study your opponents

There are actually two sports, and I’d bet you’ve heard of both of them: search engine optimization (SEO) and going viral on Facebook. Both take years (yes, I said years) of study to master, but you can start getting pretty decent traffic after just a few months of study and practice.

Which one should you focus on?

Well, here are two questions to guide you:

Is your topic something your friends and family regularly talk about on Facebook? Examples: pets, parenting, self-improvement, and health. If so, focus on playing the viral traffic sport.

Is your topic something people actively search for information about on Google? Examples: product reviews, specific questions they would ask an expert, how-to information. If so, focus on SEO.

For most topics, you can do both, but one or the other will be dominant. In that case, focus on whichever one is dominant.

In the blogging space, for example, stuff about writing and grammar occasionally goes viral on Facebook, because we love criticizing our relatives about their terrible English. On the other hand, you rarely talk with your family about blogging platforms, WordPress plugins, affiliate marketing, digital marketing, keyword research, or any other blogging topics.

You will, however, search for them on Google. Just as you would guess then, the blogging niche is heavily dominated by search. Here’s a breakdown of Smart Blogger’s traffic by source:

The truth is, we pretty much ignore Facebook. The volume of traffic available there comes nowhere close to the volume of traffic available from Google. So, we focus on Google.

I also spend WAY more time keeping up to date on SEO stuff than I do on social stuff. I’m a geek about it. Throw me in a room full of Google engineers, and I’d probably know more than half of them.

Not to imply I’m the best, though. I’m also competing against people like Darren Rowse, Amy Lynn Andrews, and Neil Patel. They’re pretty freaking good too.

In time, I think I can be better, but who knows? That’s why sports are fun. You never know who is going to win.

If you’re good though, you’ll always be in the “playoffs,” for your space, and you’ll get lots of traffic. Maybe not the most, but still plenty.

And then you can focus on how to…

4. Grow Your Email List with Pop Ups

Chances are, you see pop ups as an annoyance.

They get in the way when you’re trying to read. They ask you to hand over sensitive information like your name, email address, and phone number. Sometimes you have to deal with multiple pop ups on the same site, and it makes you feel hassled and uncared for.

And all that sucks. In my opinion, you have every right to be annoyed.

But here’s the thing…

That’s where the money comes from. The best predictor of the revenue for a blog is the size of their email list. Here’s a breakdown of our revenue at Smart Blogger comparing revenue device from email to other sources.

The rule of thumb is you can expect to make $1 per subscriber per month. So, if you have 10,000 email subscribers, you should be able to make about $10,000 per month.

So obviously, growing your email list is a top priority. You might, however, feel conflicted about using pop ups. What are you supposed to do?

Here’s a different way of looking at it:

If a visitor comes to your site and doesn’t give you their email address, the chances of them returning are nearly zero. You’ll never have another opportunity to help them.

If you believe your content is the best, and you believe you can help them over time, I believe you owe it to them to be as pushy as possible about staying in contact. In other words, not using a pop up is unethical. A little annoyance is a small price to pay for change.

And remember, that doesn’t mean you have to be extremely pushy or spammy. You can absolutely use pop ups in authentic ways.

But you absolutely must use them. Assuming you want to make money, anyway.

5. Begin Monetizing with Affiliate Programs

So, you’re operating in a profitable niche, and you have traffic and an email list. What next?

Lots of new bloggers jump into creating a course or book or community of some sort, but that’s a mistake, in my opinion. Before you start selling things, you need concrete evidence those things are what people want to buy. Otherwise, you’re risking wasting months or even years of your life trying to push a product no one wants.

The simplest way to obtain that evidence:

Affiliate programs.

By seeing what your audience buys from other people, you can get a much better sense of what they might want to buy from you. If you promote a product and it converts well, you should think about creating a similar product. If it doesn’t convert well, you should probably move on.

In other words, affiliate programs offer are a form of market research. As a bonus, you just so happen to get paid commissions on the products your customers buy in the process. So not only are you learning what your target audience wants to buy, but you’re making money from your blog at the same time. Pretty sweet deal.

When you buy a course on SEO, you want to transition from feeling bewildered and getting ignored by Google (Point A) to ranking for competitive terms and getting great blog traffic.

The success of a product ultimately depends on helping customers make those transitions. If the customer doesn’t get to Point B, they typically view the experience as a failure.

So, here’s the magic question:

What makes you better equipped to deliver that transition than your competitors?

7. Launch the Minimum Viable Funnel

Look around at successful entrepreneurs of any type, and you’ll find a surprising trend:

They tend to sell their products before the product is created.

To most people, this sounds like insanity at best or a disturbing lack of ethics at worst. How could you possibly ask people to buy something that doesn’t exist?

The answer:

It’s the same principle as Kickstarter.

You create a fancy minimal sales funnel of some sort (in this case, just a simple sales page), tell people the product is coming soon, and then wait to see if enough people sign up to justify making the product. If they don’t, you refund everyone’s money and start over.

In other words, it’s the final step in validating you have a viable product. The steps go like this:

Identify demand by promoting affiliate products

Find a unique mechanism that makes you clearly superior

Test the demand for that unique mechanism with a quick and dirty launch before you create the product

In my case, the minimum viable funnel was a 90-minute webinar. The first time I did it, there was no product, no follow-up sequence, nothing. It was just a bare-bones test.

And it resulted in $126,000 in sales live on the webinar.

Seeing that $30,000 sales was my minimum for success, we went ahead and created the first version of the product live with students. About a year later, it’s now approaching $1 million in sales.

That’s also just one product. We have others, and we have still more in the research pipeline.

And guess what I would do if I had to start over again?

The exact same thing. It’s not easy, it’s not fast, it’s not even that sexy, but it works.

Do bloggers make money?

I certainly do, but I don’t think that’s what you’re asking. I think you’re asking…

“Is it reasonable for me to learn how to make money blogging?”

The no BS answer:

It depends on how patient and persistent you are.

Starting a blog from scratch is just as difficult as starting a small business. For example, it requires the same time and effort as starting your own restaurant, software company, or accounting service. Yes, those businesses are wildly different, but the first few years are usually the same story: low income, lots of stress, big learning curve.

If you want a more concrete answer than that, we’ve found it takes even our smartest, most dedicated students 3-6 years to make enough money from blogging to quit their jobs. And that sounds like a long time, but so what? 3-6 years to be able to work from anywhere in the world, take a vacation whenever you want, and probably have passive income until the day you die?

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

How much money can you make from blogging?

The fact is, most bloggers make as much money as any other type of entrepreneur:

Nothing.

And it’s not because there’s no money in it. This blog makes more than $1 million per year, for God sakes, and it’s nowhere close to the most profitable blog out there. Blogs like The Penny Hoarder, Moz, and Lifehacker power businesses worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

So why aren’t more bloggers rich?

The truth is, most people quit. They start a blog, write a post or two, realize it’s hard work, and walk away.

But if you’re patient and persistent?

You can make millions. I have. So have lots of other smart, dedicated entrepreneurs.

You just have to do the work. Consistently. For years.

How do you start your own blog for free?

Lots of people say you can’t. They tell you to buy a domain name, a web hosting account (Bluehost is one you see pushed a lot by influencers), and a premium WordPress theme.

But I think that’s nonsense.

You can get started for free within five minutes on Medium. They also have over 60 million monthly readers, so you can get a lot of exposure there if you get featured.

This great article walks you through that strategy, step-by-step.

Alternatively, you can write on WordPress.com, Linkedin, or any of the other platforms out there. It doesn’t really matter. The point is, start writing and learning as soon as possible.

Once people start sharing your great, informative posts, and you begin to understand how everything works, then you can go through the trouble of setting up your own site, installing WordPress, and all that jazz. Until then though, it’s just a headache you don’t need.

What are the most popular blogging platforms?

WordPress is by far the most popular. No one else is even close.

But that doesn’t mean it’s the best for everyone. There are several blogging platforms you can try — and most of them are free.

As I mentioned earlier, I think Medium is a good place to start. You can also create your own blog with tools like Blogger, Squarespace, Wix, Joomla, and countless others.

What are the top blogs about how to make money blogging?

I’d like to think Smart Blogger is the best (and most comprehensive) site on the topic, but it’s by no means the only one. Not all of these talk about how to make money blogging, but together, they give you a solid foundation:

The Bottom Line about How to Make Money Blogging

Is it possible?

Absolutely, but only if you treat it like a blogging business.

Yes, you can start your blog as a side project. Yes, you can slowly grow it in the background. Yes, you can turn your blog into a source of passive, full-time income that eventually lets you quit your job, travel, spend a lot of time with your family, whatever you want to do.

But like anything worthwhile, it’s hard work getting there.

You have to study. Practice. Master your craft. Put in a lot of work. Hustle.

When I first started my niche blog website, two years ago, I had only $135 in my pocket. Believe it or not, it took me a little less than 1.5 years to hit the $1k earning in commissions.

This is Erfan Uddin, a mechanical engineer in the profession, an online enthusiast. I’m currently living in Bangladesh. Also, trying to create some online income stream so that I can quit my 9 to 5 job.

The only reason that pushed me into this industry is to live a comfortable life financially. I was completely broke when I started this website.

Back then I kept searching on Google typing “how to make money online with no money”! This might look hilarious now, but this was what I did. I was looking for a legit income source rather than jumping with a scam.

Somehow, I learned the term “passive income” and later stumbled upon this process of Amazon affiliate. Finally, I decided to take the course of Khalid Farhan as that was legit and affordable for me.

First, I went through the course and started implementing it. From the very beginning, I had a tough time working with the process as I was completely new with this area.

I had to learn keyword research, article writing, WordPress, SEO. Keyword research was the most crucial part and the hardest. In the end, the KW that I choose created this site. If that same KW is shown to me right now, I would leave it. It was hard back then and even harder now.

My suggestion here would be not to go after a keyword that is in the niche you love. Go after a keyword that is quite easy to rank for if only you have a tight budget.

After selecting a keyword I quickly generated some more keywords for supporting articles. On top of that, I found nichepursuits.com and followed their success stories and podcasts regularly. This helped me a lot in generating keyword ideas and article structure.

Right away, I bought a domain on 01 November 2017 from Namecheap and used their hosting as they had a great offer back then. Quickly, I set up WordPress and installed a free theme. Later on, I used a group buy process for the Genesis theme. Genesis themes are truly minimalist and fast.

WordPress setup was done and I ordered my first article to a writer. The quality of the article was not good but acceptable. That article never ranked as I said the keyword was too hard for me.

As the cost of article writing was not affordable for me I started reading about article writing. This cost me some time and the growth of the site came to a halt before it even started!

I quickly learned about the long-tail keyword and wrote a couple of articles based on it. This strategy worked for me. Following this strategy, I quickly published 08 posts within January 2018.

I added a couple of more content over the month of February and March 2018. Till then the traffic was not even mentionable. You can see that in the screenshot of my analytics:

  See that? This tiny amount of sessions demotivated me already. I was ranking on the first page only for a couple of very low volume of easy keywords. I was about to lose hope and then came the first sale on Amazon. It was 31 March 2018 when I got the first sale!

This was when I planned for some real strategies. I am going to share those strategies and show you how I scaled it to $1K in commission.

Keyword Strategy

After the first commission, I decided to laser focus on a specific topic. As my domain selection was for an authority website, I niched them down. This was my first approach to building AUTHORITY on a topic.

I could not go after my primary keyword anymore as it was extremely competitive. Having said that, I jumped into long-tail keywords.

I’ll take “rangefinder” as an example here. Suppose, I found a keyword “best rangefinder”. This is super competitive and there’s some big fish on the first page. So, I would go for a keyword like “best rangefinder for hunting” which is way less competitive.

Well, yes, the search volume will be low like 250 p/m. But, normally those big sites do not target these laser-focused long-tail keywords. If you can find 5/6 keywords like this and rank on the 1st or 2nd spot, you can easily manage a minimum of 2000-3000 traffic per month only with these keywords. Believe me, this worked for me like a charm.

And for the informative keywords, I had great affection for these kinds of keywords. I love writing informative contents and most of the cases they are easy to rank for. I used google’s “people also look for” and “search suggestion” for finding these kinds of keywords.

However, you have to go in-depth for finding these kinds of keywords. I sometimes scraped my competitors for finding these keyword ideas.

Content Strategy

I really could not afford to hire a writer back then, in 2018. All the content was written by me. It took some time to get in shape but I put so much effort into learning article writing.

My concept was to fulfill the “searcher intent” of a keyword. I typed a keyword on google and looked at the “people also ask” and the “search suggestion” closely. It is like Google itself is telling you what users are looking for. And I tried to write as detailed as I can on those topics.

I am not going to talk about the format of an article as I really do not agree that there is any specific kind of format for “buying” or “informative” articles. All it matters is to give the user what he/she is looking for.

Going after this method worked well for me. The traffic started picking up from June 2018 till December 2018. You can see that in the screenshot.

And the earnings were like these in the last three month of 2018:

I know I know. The income is poor regarding the traffic. I’ll talk about it later.

Till December 2018, I had only 22 articles. 60% of those were informative content.

I wasn’t happy at all with the site performance. Then I decided to look for keywords that are:

“easy to rank”,

“has a search volume above 1000”,

“missing super informative content on the first page”.

I found some and wrote a super informative and detailed article on those. I was writing more informative articles than money articles. This process brought great traffic and increased my site authority.

For example, A keyword like “best time of the day to hunt deer” is the potential candidate for super information-rich content.

You can see the traffic in the year 2019 until September. It kept rising and was stable.

I published about 2/3 articles each month of the year 2019. As the earning increased I started sourcing articles from freelance writers. The site had a total 40 posts!

The only thing that I focused, was publishing content for the user. I tried to serve a user what he was looking for.

Backlink Strategy

This is the one area I had trouble with progress. Managing good quality backlinks were tough. Moreover, I had to start and learn about SEO from scratch.

I started with blog commenting and social profiles. Made some forum comments too. That did not bring any results at all.

Over the full year of 2018, I only did guest posting. It was hard and I really hated this part. Still, I was super afraid of PBN.

However, I managed to avail of some moderate quality guest posts on some decent sites. Good sites were asking sky-high prices!

In the year 2019, I focused on only two types of backlinks. Forum commenting and niche edits. In my opinion, having a link from an old post is way more effective than a newly published guest post.

Oh, I tried some Web 2.0 also in the middle of 2019. I was inspired by this as my competitors were doing it. And that worked for me too!

On-Page SEO

This was my most favorite part. It was the only place for me where I could play around by my wish. Yes, Google has its own theory. But, I played with the keyword density, H tags, internal linking to find out what works best.

I followed the instructions of famous SEO guys on this. My site had Yoast SEO plugin installed and I never waited for the GREEN signal to light up for on-page SEO. This GREEN signal is the silliest mistake that most newbie makes. 

I created some extra notes within the content, like a featured area, targeting the featured snippet. For some it worked, for some, it didn’t.

Final Income Status

I worked hard and prayed. The results were satisfying. The income shot up in April and kept growing. Here’s what my income looked like:

March 2019: $215.81

April 2019: $505.21

May 2019: $1170.59

June: $911.59

July: $855.09

August: $836.66

September: $849.13

I setup Onelink in June 2019 for Canada and UK. UK did not bring anything at all. But, Amazon Canada brought about $100 per month since July 2019.

Final Thoughts

This income might not be even a dime for some people but this was huge for me!

Finally, I sold the site to Motioninvest.com on October 01, 2019. This was a great experience with them. No brokerage fee, super fast deal.

If you want to take something from this story I would say, focus on your content then backlink. Understand what the user is searching for and find the gaps in the top 10 results of the first page. Write content that fills the gap and sneak in that space!

One more thing I must mention, please use a table on your money pages for great conversion. My conversion rate was nearly doubled right after I used a comparison table plugin.

In a nutshell, the best way for achieving a goal is to start working hard right now. Learn and take action.

This is a very attractive option to monetize with as it means set everything up and walk away.  The sales process will operate without you, taking the money and granting access to the product is all automated. You may have to answer the odd email or give the occasional refund but overall it’s a pretty good deal if you can get it going.

Sell an Online Course

There are entrepreneurs and businesses out there selling premium online courses and making millions of dollars. Courses are quite popular and you can charge a decent amount for them, which is why they’re so effective.

You could charge $20, $50, $99, $299 or even $999 – depending on value delivered.

How much you deliver, the benefits if the information or how in demand it is. There are courses out there showing people how to make $100k a year with a certain business model or service and these courses can sell for $3000 or more!

This one is an oldie but still not a bad option, as it can be extremely passive. You can simply use space on your website to display ads. Industry profitability plays a factor in earnings which means your earnings may vary depending on the topic of your website.

Basically, more traffic usually means you earn more money.

There are several different ad types you can monetize with:

CPC – Cost per Click You display an ad on your website and when someone clicks on that advertisement you earn a small fee. A lot of people set up little niche sites that sit and passively earn money using this model.

This can be a good option to get a predetermined amount.  If you have time you can easily implement it yourself, although an ad network will offer more statistics for a fee – keeping your clients happy for the ads they pay for.

People are willing to pay you to post one of their articles on your site. Crazy, right? Well it’s a top way to monetize your blog.

Usually, this post includes a keyword/anchor text link people are trying to optimize for SEO or it could be to advertise products. You can put this under your advertising page or wait to be contacted via email.  Either way, I’ve made thousands from ‘out of the blue’ Sponsored Post deals in the past.

Affiliate marketing

Sell other peoples stuff and receive a commission!

Affiliate marketing is immensely popular as it can pay quite well, with some products out there offering hundreds of dollars in commission.  You simply add a link to your website, if someone clicks on that link and follows through to make a purchase, a tracking cookie puts your name next to the purchase as an affiliate and you get paid. That’s it.

There is no shortage of Affiliate Programs out there to monetize your traffic wtih.  Look in the footer of many websites to see if they offer an affiliate program, or see one of the networks below.  Just be aware, these are the top networks but even this list barely scratches the surface of what opportunities are out there, so get out and do some digging!

Heaps of business have their own affiliate program and use no network, as I mentioned earlier, check their website footer for ‘affiliate’ or ‘partner’ program – or even do a Google Search for  “(website name) affiliate program”.

Sell physical goods

One of the oldest methods in the history of the human race – “here’s my thing, you can have it for $5!”.

Selling physical goods on an E-Commerce platform or through a marketplace like Amazon and send people to it. It can be a good way to make some money and can be relatively passive or active depending on how you go about it.

There are some avenues to consider:

Shipping goods yourself – the most active method, when a customer buys you take responsibility for sending the goods on.

Fulfillment – You buy stock, send it to a fulfillment agency (Amazon offers this) and when the sale is made, someone else ships it, you just pay the fee and receive your money for the sale, no physical work is involved.

Drop-shipping – similar to above, except you only pay for goods when they’re sold.  Someone buys an item you’ve listed, the company you’re buying from is notified and sends it to the customer.  You get paid for the sale, you then pay the dropshipping company.  No physical work involved (nice and passive, no upfront costs on products).

If you run a WordPress website that you want to monetize, you can install WooCommerce and sell through there or try a dedicated platform like Shopify – where you can either sell on your Shopify site or install their plugin and sell from your WordPress website.

Sell your own ‘Print on Demand’ Merchandise

I’ve done a little bit of this in the past and continue to make a small amount of passive income from it today.

You can create a design or quote and upload it to a ‘Print on Demand’ store.  It works by listing the item on a website and printing it individually once it’s sold – you keep the profit.  There are many places you can do this, selling shirts, framed prints, stickers, mugs and a diverse range of goods.

Refer products you sell elsewhere

This kind of works with many of the above avenues.

If you make money anywhere else on the internet outside of your website, don’t be afraid to refer your own products. You could have a website that has no affiliate links, products or method of contact, and simply link out to your other site whether it be a Shopify Store, Merch store, Upwork profile, whatever.

Monetising a website doesn’t require everything to happen o on that exact website.

Rent-out your website (or areas of it)

This is similar to selling ad space but on a much larger scale. With this method you monetize the entire website!

You create a website, rank through SEO, email marketing, blogging or whatever you do to get relevant traffic – and then you charge rent to someone to use it for their business. You can brand the site with their logo and contact details or rent out areas of the website to send them business.

This is one of the lesser talked about but still very popular methods that people use to make money with their websites.

Use it to promote your brick and mortar business

Do you have a business or shop with a physical address?  Does your website discuss topics that are in line with that business?

Well, mention your business or shop and send people your way.  This works well if you can expand into online services or E-Commerce to truly take advantage of your online audience.

Connecting these two assets is an effective way to monetize traffic that can really bring in some extra money!

Accept donations & sponsorship

Sometimes you can bring in some money by simply bypassing the whole exchange approach of selling and instead just ask for donation or sponsorship. It’s not the most effective way to monetize a site but it’s very non-aggressive. Paypal makes this easy with the Donate button you can add to your site which you can use for both options, offering one-off transactions or recurring transactions.

The difference between donating and sponsorship would be that a donation is received for your work and you can simply accept and leave it at that, stating that it will help keep your website funded and active.  Sponsorship would usually require something in return, such as a mention of the business somewhere or even some additional goods if you can think beyond that.

Many websites just have a “sponsors” section at the bottom of their main pages with a series of logos linking off to their websites. But there is another option which is a bit of a step up from there…

Run a Patreon Campaign

If you have a YouTube Channel or website, you can easily start up a Patreon account.

Basically, users can choose their own fee amount to sponsor you with every month and you offer exclusive extras in return.  You can set levels of exclusive content by how much people are willing to pay and create a nice recurring income.

All you need to do is continually offer quality and keep people interested. You can monetize a website, a YouTube channel or whatever you prefer using Patreon.

Offer Premium Content

Level up the content you’re already offering and monetize your site by offering it in a premium package.

You can sell a monthly or 12 monthly membership, or simply allow people to purchase each piece of content one by one.  Either way, this can be a good way to generate some extra money for doing a little extra of what you’re already doing.

You can offer a ‘pay per page’ option with the use of WooCommerce and the ‘Pay Per Post‘ Plugin

Combine with YouTube or a Podcast.

You know if you reach 1000 YouTube Subscribers and 40,000+ views over a 12 month period, you can monetize your videos, right?

Well, if you have a highly trafficked website, embed those YouTube videos into your site to get them more views and therefore – more ad revenue. This combination can be advantageous as your YouTube Channel can promote your website, and your website promotes your YouTube channel. It’s like combining superpowers!

The same approach can be applied to podcasting. It’s another indirect ay to monetize your traffic.

You start a podcast, promote it on your website and then gain sponsorship or sell affiliate products through your podcast. You can even create blog posts and have the podcast available in MP3 format for people to listen to.

Combine some of the above

You don’t need to stick to only one avenue of monetization.

You can combine a heap of these all into one website. Some of my niche sites sell Ad-Space,  a Premium E-book,  affiliate products and combine with my YouTube Channel.  While many out there offer digital products, an online course, and sponsorship through their Podcast – which they promote on their website.

There’s nothing stopping you from combining as many of these avenues as are compatible – some simply won’t mix well though.  For example, you wouldn’t rent out an entire website to a business and plaster it with ads and your own affiliate links. That’s just poor value.

But you can start with one and expand as you go, or simply respond to the demand of your audience by introducing products that solve their problems.

Flip your website

If you’re not happy with your site, move on…

…but get paid to move on!

Websites can sell anywhere from $100 to $100 million.  It’s not a consistent form of monetization as you only earn from your website once with this method. But you can do it to multiple websites.

If you get decent traffic and earn a little bit of money, you can usually get a few thousand dollars. You’ll need to get a proper valuation though.

It is interesting to look at what’s available for reference – or you may even find a website you’re willing to buy.  You can consider buying a website and using it to earn an income or you can simply by, give it a little work and sell it at a higher price.

Most Clickfunnels users buy lots of extra products, such as training or extra services for their business, which are promoted to them by CF and you get paid your 40% for every single purchase they make.

For example, there’s another software called FunnelScripts, which generates automatic sales copy for your funnel pages. Most business owners don’t like to write copy, and honestly, it’s almost impossible to do it better than the experts behind Clickfunnels.

For these reasons, this extra service attracts a lot of people who choose to pay an additional $497 / year. That’s another $198.80 / year for you at no extra work or cost or work…

Similarly, if a referral of yours eventually upgrades from the Basic account to the Full Etison Suite, your commission will go up from $38.80 to $118.80.

What’s a sticky cookie and why should you care?

A cookie is simply information saved by your browser about your visit.

Once someone uses a referral link of yours to one of Clickfunnel’s products, they’ll be “cookied” to you for 6 months.

Once a “cookied” referral makes a purchase, all other purchases will be also attributed to you.

As you can imagine, Clickfunnels experts are the top sales funnel builders in the World.

Good for them… and for YOU!!!

Once you get a referral through the door, which you can do for as low as a Free book where they only pay shipping, they’ll be sent through CF’s master funnels (including email funnels).

If in any of these, your referral buys one of their products or starts using the software, that’s your commission too!

Tier 2 Commissions and Affiliate Incentives

I didn’t mention this before but Clickfunnels also pays a 2nd tier commission of 5%.

Another genius move of Russell Brunson’s inspired in Network Marketing.

With this in mind, you have an extra incentive to help your referrals succeed, and when they succeed they stick around, and you continue to get those monthly commissions. This leads to that extra reward of 5% for everything your referral promotes successfully!

Art, Artists, and Community Interaction

This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot recently. It’s something I think both artists and people interested in consuming art should take the time to read. It’s a discussion worth having. 

[Disclaimer I’m basically spit-balling this, and it is based on my own experiences and perspective. This discussion and advice may not be universal.]   

Having interaction with your audience/community is something that I feel is incredibly important as an artist. When you make art you need to be marketable, you need to sell. This isn’t universally true but if people aren’t seeing your art, somewhere along the line, something has gone wrong. There are multiple factors that go into your success as an artist of course. Things like work ethic, self improvement, and the core foundation skills you use to create art in the first place, are fairly obvious factors. However once you’ve made a drawing your work isn’t done. You still need to show it. You still need to sell it. Otherwise you’re not really a successful artist, right?

It gets lengthy under the cut, but please take the time to read through this and consider sharing it. I put time into this and would like for it to gain at least some visibility. 

From my experience there’s more than a few factors that play into your success. Your audience, your business sense, and your ability to interact with your community as an artist however, really stand out as important to me. And all three are linked very closely to each other. Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about this, and I want to touch on specifically the first and last elements on that list. Business sense is important, but it relies entirely on the artist to understand how business and entrepreneurship work. Community and visibility do not. 

As an artist you depend on your audience and the community surrounding your work, however large or small it may be. I know that personally I have several friends who I can rely on to support my work. They may be a small network of people, but they are in the notes on almost every post I make on this site. As an artist I want to see this network grow. If I spread my community it makes me more successful as an artist, and this benefits me a lot as someone who plans on using my art as a source of income. As someone who has yet to break into the professional setting, my options are limited to freelance work and private commissions being my major sources of accessible income. Freelance work and getting commissions can rely heavily on reputation and visibility. This is why I (and many other artists) need a community.

Growing a community is something that takes time and effort. And it’s something that I believe requires the artist and the audience to sort of meet in the middle. Realistically though, growing a community is primarily the artist’s job. In day to day life, as a consumer, it’s not my job to advertise a product to myself. A company wouldn’t just give me a product and tell me that if I like it, and want more of that product, I need to try to get my friends to buy it too. In the same way, forcing the audience to sell the artwork they consume is not practical, and just straight up won’t work. As an artist seeing people only hit the “like” button is frustrating because it limits my exposure, but also it’s not that person’s responsibility to hit “reblog”. Just like it’s not a consumer’s job to sell the products they want. However art isn’t quite like say, Pepsi, or a pair of new shoes. The audience shouldn’t be passive in their consumption of art. After all art at it’s core is interactive. 

This is where community and interaction really come into play. I both need and desire to have people care about my artwork. But getting “popular” is slow. Gaining an audience, is slow. Early on in your art career your visibility is very small, and no one knows who you are. You have no reputation, and no incentives for your audience. You need something to sell them on.

For someone to want to be involved more actively in consuming art they need to have a reason to care. This is why fanart is so popular, this is why web comics and artists with long running series do well. They have a product people can identify with or learn to identify with (this is why my Dark Souls sketches I may have drawn in an hour have several hundred notes and my personal work I spend days working on gets no traction comparatively). 

This just shows that on some level, for an audience to care, art has to have an immediate appeal to a person. This is either based on personal taste (what art really stands out to you?), or by appealing to a group of people as a whole (drawings video game or TV characters from popular franchises that people love). I feel that being able to do both is important. Bring in people based on topics or themes they know already, and hopefully they stay because you have a body of work outside that they like as well. And outside of your artwork, appeal to them even more by showing that you have an accessible community. That you care about the fact that they like your work. This is something you can do through community outreach, by doing things like:

Drawing things you know people will like, it doesn't have to be your entire body of work but it helps to make your content relatable to your audience(which I mentioned already).

Make and post art frequently. 

Streaming your artwork on places like YouTube and Picarto.

Show works in progress (WIPs), or show how you make your art from time to time.

Interact with other artists (draw together with them Google Hangouts are great for this, this post might be helpful for that). 

Create a system to reward people for involvement in your community, Patreon is a good way to do this.

Another way to reward interaction is to let the community have some influence in your content (polls and contests).

Set up a way for people to make small donations, it’s better than undercutting your prices. it’s more affordable for people who care but aren’t just full of money. Using a Ko-fi button is good for this.  

Post to as many sites as you can.

Respond to feedback now and then 

Posting with regularity, and making your content accessible with links to where you post attached is also a smart idea. Make it easy for people to find where you put your art.  

Just because it is the artist’s job to build and “curate” their community doesn’t mean that the community itself should be passive. If you are seeing art, you are interacting with it. And if you are interacting with it, even for 10 seconds, it took hours and hours of effort on top of years of practice and learning just for the artist to let you see it for those 10 seconds. Even mediocre artists often have spent a large amount of time trying very hard to get as far as they have. No one should have to try that hard not have some kind of payoff. This is why your support as a consumer matters so much.  

That being said a consumer’s job isn’t to sell the product. But being passive in your interaction with art really doesn’t benefit anyone. The largest form of this I see is people hitting the “like” button, and nothing else. Doing that is like walking up to a street vendor and telling them you like what they’re selling, and then walking away. Consumer interactions like that mean that while you get to see the art, the artist now has a smaller audience (I’m basically saying likes on posts essentially do not matter from a practical perspective). 

And yes, it’s not your job to make the artist’s community larger, but it’s worth considering that you can. But then again, why should you if it’s not your job, right? By being active in your consumption you can join a group of people who are a network that truly supports an artist and will benefit both the artist and you. If you interact with the art you appreciate, and especially with the artist, you increase your chances of seeing more art you like. it doesn’t even have to be monetary contributions. 

So how can you help out, how can you be active in an artist’s network? Here are some things you can do:

Hit “Reblog” instead of “Like” (it’s easiest thing you can do and involves almost no extra effort) 

If you see art you like, find out who made it. More often than not, they have more like it. 

Follow artist’s streams. 

Ask questions. 

Leave comments. As long as it’s not rude or negative just say something in response. 

Give money if you really, really, like the art. Support on Patreon, Commissions, or even just one or two dollar donations are all super important. 

if you can, just learn about art! broaden your appreciation for it. It can even be fun (seriously art history is crazy). 

[Keep in mind that not all artists will interact with you or their communities the same, use good judgement. This post is all coming from someone who is talking about smaller artists working independently or freelance, and trying to build a following on an online platform like Tumblr.]

But like I said, your job is at the end of the day, to just be an audience. You can do whatever you want. You can hit “like” and keep scrolling, I won’t stop you. I won’t be surprised or upset even. But if you really like a piece of art, if you care about art in any way, keep this discussion in mind. It’s really important. Art can’t exist without an audience that supports it.    

TL;DR - As an artist, reach out to people and actively make yourself visible. As an audience member, interact and support artists you like.

TIP #1 – MINDSET

Alright so the first tip that most people typically tell you to start with is to choose a niche, which is definitely a key tip that we will be discussing next…

But before any of that I truly believe the most important tip I can give, especially if you haven’t started YouTube yet… is having the proper mindset.

Because YouTube is a big commitment. You know this already if you’ve started your own channel..

But it’s going to take you much longer to create & edit a video than the ONE minute it takes to take a picture and upload it to Facebook or Instagram.

However, there’s a big reason why it takes this extra time…

And that’s because the videos you upload on YouTube don’t fade off into the abyss after 5 hours of posting (if that).

I literally have videos I created over a year ago on my channel that still get me views, subscribers, and money… to this day.

But when I post a picture on facebook it’ll last like a day and a picture on instagram lasts a few hours!

So yes, it’s definitely more work up front… but it continues to pay off for months and years to come.

And that’s a big problem with a lot of people.

All they see is how long it will take to do… not the insane amount of passive income that you can make from YouTube videos.

Because when starting out, things WILL be slow.

That’s honestly why so many people give up on their businesses because they’re so use to working a job and getting paid every hour worked.

And that’s not how it works with businesses or with YouTube…

But after a certain amount of hours and work you put in, you will make much more than you will ever make from an job that pays per hour.

So that’s why mindset is so important.

You have to try and remember why you started to begin with.

Whether that’s because you want freedom or you want to buy your parents a house or spend more time with your loved ones…

Because its not going to be easy… but it will be the most rewarding thing you ever do if you put in the work upfront.

So just make sure you don’t think that you will be getting rich overnight on YouTube like these gurus promise you…

This requires hard work and dedication… and there’s no shortcuts in business or in youtube.

Also, since we’re on the topic of shortcuts…

A lot of people think that buying views and subscribers or doing sub4sub is going to help.

And it will get your numbers higher, but not only is it against YouTubes terms and you can get your account banned for that…

But it actually ruins your channel.

People who buy views end up killing their average watch time on their videos because of it and people who do sub4sub end up having a higher subscriber amount but their videos have super low views so it makes their channel look even worse.

So make sure you’re going in with the right mindset and you don’t try and take shortcuts…

Because they really don’t exist.

I do have one tip I’ll be showing you that has allowed me to fast-track my subscriber count, but if you don’t watch all the way through you won’t get to see that, so make sure to keep reading!

TIP #2 – PICKING THE RIGHT NICHE

Now, picking the wrong niche could absolutely destroy your channel.

And a niche basically means picking an industry or a type or types of videos you’ll make around a specific industry.

Assuming you’ve already started YouTube, this would just mean making your videos more specific.

Which is something I see so many new YouTubers doing soooo wrong.

They just start uploading videos about the most random stuff.

Like they’ll be uploading videos about college one day, fitness the next day, and then football the next day.

And that’s just about the worst thing you can do for your YouTube channel.

Because any subscribers you to get, they may be interested in the video they watched that made them subscribe but if the other videos you make have nothing to do with that video… 

then your subscriber count is basically just a vanity metric at that point with a bunch of people who aren’t even interested in your videos.

So when you’re first starting out you really want to try and choose a niche that has appeal to a crowd that is passionate.

A lot of people say you have to be passionate about what you talk about, and it’s definitely helpful for sure… but sometimes you just gotta try and find something that you like and that has a group of PEOPLE who are passionate about that niche.

Like for me, I really didn’t feel passionate about what I started with, but the longer I do YouTube I figure out what I’m passionate about and what you guys like the most.

But just try not to get hung up on this too much.

Because at the end of the day you can always switch your niche at anytime or start a new channel with a different niche.

But I will say that the 3 evergreen niches are health, wealth and relationships.

And those are the best niches to go into.

So you’ll want to choose a sub-niche of one of those main evergreen niches.

Like for example, for wealth… you have personal finance, make money online, etc.

For relationships you have parenting, dating, etc.

And you can go even more niched down than that too. 

But it’s just about doing research on other YouTuber’s and finding out what you like the most and going with it.

TIP #3 – LEVEL UP YOUR B.A.V.L.

Now the next tip I would give again assuming you’ve already started on YouTube and you’ve already picked your niche…

I would tell you to level up your B.A.V.L.

And you’ve probably never heard that before.

But all it means is:

Video

Lighting

Most people only talk about their audio video and lighting but the background can be just as important.

I mean have you ever watched a video with someone who’s recording in a messy room? I Know I haven’t.

And this doesn’t necessarily mean spending a bunch of money.

Upgrading your background could literally just mean cleaning up your room.

And as far as audio video and lighting…

my entire setup cost me less than $300.

Literally.

So you don’t need some ridiculously expensive camera or lighting to make your setup look good.

And sometimes simple is better anyways.

And there’s so many videos out there that can help you figure out what works for your budget.

But honestly, this tip is pretty important.

Yes, you can use your cellphone and use a window for lighting – which is fine if that’s all you can afford…

But if you really want to take YouTube seriously, spending $200-$300 to upgrade your gear can make a huge difference and give your audience a better experience for sure.

TIP #4 – FOCUS & BE CONSISTENT

This is honestly one of the most important tips I can give you for anything in life, especially YouTube.

Going back to mindset, there are NO SHORTCUTS, period.

And if you want to be successful with anything… you have to be consistent and you have to focus.

Let me just tell you a quick story.

When I first started YouTube I wanted to upload 3 videos a week.

Before i ever uploaded my first video I recorded and edited 18 videos.

So that’s 6 weeks worth of videos, 6×3 is 18.

In 8 weeks, I ran out of videos.

So I only created 6 videos in 8 weeks.

The reason this happened is because I wasn’t focused.

Before I started on YouTube, all I was doing was focusing on creating those 18 videos and I crushed it.

But after I started posting, I started losing focus.

I started trying to do blogging, posting on linkedin, twitter, instagram, facebook. Fb groups, etc.

I even tried hiring a social media manager for $500 at one point.

Not to mention I was still working at this time.

So i couldn’t be consistent.

Then I decided I was going to upload 1 video a week, make that video high quality and stay consistent.

Then I started focusing on that and only that, along with my 1 support platform, which was my facebook.

And I actually started growing faster but uploading less.

So it’s absolutely crucial that you pick a upload schedule and you stay consistent and focus on that.

Don’t try to do all these other business models or platforms, pick your 1 main platform which should be youtube if you’re trying to grow on youtube, then pick your one support platform.

Some people use a second support platform, but it all depends on how much time you have to invest into your online business.

And while we’re talking about support platforms, this leads me into the next tip.

TIP #5 – GET ON TIKTOK!

And I’m not even kidding about this.

In the last few months I’ve grew to over 75,000 followers on TikTok and it absolutely blew up my YouTube channel.

Nowadays I still get some views from TikTok but what tiktok allowed me to do was to show YouTube that my videos were getting good engagment and then YouTubes alogorithm started pushing my content to more people on YouTube and it exploded my growth.

But basically everytime I upload a YouTube video, I make a shorter version of that video on TIkTok and at the end of the video I tell people to go watch the full video on my YouTube channel and link to my YouTube channel in my tiktok bio.

Then right when my YouTube video goes live, that tiktok goes live and the video gets so much more views and engagement and it shows YouTube that people like the video…

And that helps fast-track your growth like crazy!

So I definitely suggest hopping on TikTok and following all of these tips.

I truly believe this is the one thing that could be considered somewhat of a shortcut.

Because it definitely fast-tracked my subscirber count 100%.

It took me over 8 months to get to 500 subscribers and as I showed you at the begining I gained over 3700 subscribers in 28 days.

That’s the power of YouTube and TIkTok combined.

And I don’t know if TikTok will be like this forever, it probably wont.

Even today, more people are getting on tiktok.

But still, the organic growth it can give you is insane.

However, a lot of people are doing things wrong.

They are only focusing on TikTok.

But they aren’t syphoning those people onto other platforms that will be around way longer…

Like YouTUBE.

A Review of Frank Rolfe’s Billboard University Bootcamp

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been intrigued by the idea of making money from billboards.

Whether it’s from owning that land and earning lease revenue from a billboard company (the passive approach) or constructing the billboards myself and renting out ad space to advertisers (the active approach), it always struck me as an opportunity that’s probably very profitable, but also rather mysterious.

It’s hard to find good information about how the business works.

There aren’t many books, courses, blogs, videos, or podcasts out there that really, truly explain how to do it.

Aside from the random scraps of information I’ve been able to pick up when talking with professionals in the outdoor advertising industry, it’s been really hard to find an authoritative source of information that actually explains everything from start-to-finish.

Introducing Frank Rolfe

Not long ago, Jaren Barnes and I decided we needed to learn more. After a bit of digging, we discovered a guy named Frank Rolfe who has spent many years in the billboard business AND put together a course about it, called The Ultimate Outdoor Billboard Boot Camp.

We reached out to Frank’s people and asked if we could take a closer look at his course and put together a review for the REtipster audience.

As you can see, the course really is jam-packed with LOTS of information. By far, the most and best information I’ve found on the subject.

Here’s a quick overview of everything it comes with:

Video Modules (15 videos): I prefer to learn by video, so this was what I chose to focus on as I went through the course. Each video ranges in length from 30 – 90 minutes, and there are 15 modules in total. (Note: I found it very easy to get through all the videos playing at 2x speed, so the videos can fly by pretty quickly).

Billboard Boot Camp Manual (157 pages): This pdf contains a lot of the exhibits, pictures, templates, and other examples that Frank reviews in the video modules. You’ll want to follow along in this pdf as Frank goes through each video.

Outdoor Billboard Home Study Course (309 pages): This is like a written version of all the video modules with a lot of additional information, visual aids, and supplemental examples included. I thought it was pretty well put together.

Audio Files: These are basically a series of teleseminars where Frank covers a lot of the stuff he talks about in the videos. There are also a few “bonus” audio files that supplement Frank’s book You’ll probably pick up a few new insights from this, but I think you’ll get most of what you need from the video modules.

What I liked about it

In my opinion, it was a fascinating course. I was hungry for this information, and the material didn’t disappoint.

There’s nothing fancy about the production quality of the videos (he’s just standing in front of a whiteboard and drawing the occasional doodles to illustrate his points), but the content is all there.

Within the first 3 videos, Frank clarified, explained and demystified an insane amount of information about how this business actually works, what kinds of properties and locations do and don’t work well for billboards, what it takes to find locations, how to negotiate with property owners and put deals together, and a lot more.

The course also comes with a couple of GIANT pdf files… one of which has several of Frank’s contract templates and marketing material, the other of which is a written version of all the content he covers in the video modules.

I appreciated the emphasis he put on the documentation, including his actual leases and templates that he spent years refining perfecting. In Module 3 alone, he goes line-by-line through his standard lease and explains why every word is important. He crafted this document with his attorney and from what I can see, it really does seem like a masterpiece.

As I learned from this course, there are a lot of things about the billboard business that 99% of people don’t understand. Everything from state and federal government compliance to zoning laws to sign types, sizes, height limitations, sign placement, and a lot more – there is A TON to know about running this kind of business, and a course like this can save a person years of trial and error.

When I got to the end of this course, I legitimately felt empowered to pursue this kind of business.

What I didn’t like about it

As I mentioned in the video above, my initial hope was that this course would teach me how to do a passive version of this business (finding and buying properties that were ideal for billboards, and simply leasing them out to a billboard company like Lamar or Clear Channel to generate passive income).

However, I realized pretty quickly that’s not what the course is teaching. It’s explaining the ACTIVE part of the business (finding properties and leasing the ground from the owner, building and owning the sign, finding advertisers, etc). In other words, it’s pretty much the opposite of what I actually wanted to do.

That being said… it also taught me that what I wanted to do probably isn’t nearly as feasible as I thought. Mainly because the property owner typically earns either a flat monthly lease about, a small percentage of ad revenue or a mix of both – and in each scenario, the revenue is a nice icing on the cake, but it’s not that much money (i.e. – not enough to justify owning an entire property solely for the purpose of holding a billboard). There might be a unique situation where this can work, but it would be a pretty rare scenario.

So, it’s not so much a problem with the course as it is a problem with reality. If anything, the course did me a favor by helping me realize this “passive” approach probably isn’t something I should be spending my time on.

It also seemed a little rudimentary, how the content was delivered through a Google Drive folder. Maybe it’s because I’ve created courses myself and I’m a perfectionist… but I would’ve used some kind of content delivery platform for this, so it felt more official and easy to navigate.

Who Is This Course For?

I think this course is for someone who has the following characteristics:

Isn’t afraid of sales, shaking hands and talking to people on the phone.

Is okay with spending plenty of time in their car, scouting out locations within a 3 – 5 hour radius from where they live.

Has the mental capacity to research and organize information to determine state and city compliance.

Is good at communicating with contractors, advertisers, property owners, and zoning and planning officials.

Has the risk tolerance to deal with the minimal liability that comes with owning billboard structures.

I don’t think this course is for someone who has these characteristics:

Hates talking on the phone and working in a sales role.

Only has a few hours a week to put toward a billboard business.

Doesn’t enjoy negotiating deals with property owners and advertisers.

Prefers passive income and doesn’t want to create another job in their life.

Wants to run a “virtual” business that can be done remotely, and entirely from a computer.

Make no mistake, the business model discussed in this course does require salesmanship, a fair amount of time (potentially a lot of time, especially when getting started), and good ongoing communication between a lot of different parties. If you’re looking for some new streams of passive income to build with a few hours per week, I don’t think this is the business for you.

Remember, the idea here isn’t to simply own the land that the billboard is located on, the idea is to own the billboards themselves, find the property owners who are willing to lease their land to you, and keep advertisers lined up for each billboard (in Module 10, Frank even gets into the details of how to design billboards, which is WAY more in-depth than I thought this business would be). All in all, there’s a lot of money-making potential AND a lot of work to keep this kind of business running.

This could be the perfect opportunity for some folks, but it’s important to know what kind of work you enjoy, what you have time for, and what you excel at. Not everybody excels at the things required in this kind of billboard business, so it’s not the first thing I’d suggest to everyone.
